01 diploma design thesis, 2013-2014 Redesigning the silo at the historic Allatini Mills The thesis concerns the redesign of the old silo (Building 24) at the historic Allatini Mills in Thessaloniki to a residential building. It is a machine-building and this characterization is shown in the way it is organized internally. The redesign is done in such a way so as to require the fewest possible interventions and to highlight the internal structure. In its first two parts throughout the height, the building is converted into a museum of itself. In the other parts it is converted into loft - like residences mostly for one person or for couples. Each apartment occupies two parts, with the wooden panels to be the centerpiece of each apartment and to divide the space in two. The only additions within the apartments are the volumes that contain the toilets, which have a lower height to be clearly differentiated. published in www.greekarchitects.gr and www.archstudies.gr

Also, the creation of an addition is recommended, as over the years there was always another building next to Building 24. The aim of the proposal is the addition to have an ephemeral character, which will be easily distinguishable and will contrast with Building’s 24 robustness. In order to achieve this other ephemeral constructions, which are related to the industrial site, such as storage sheds, scaffolding and containers are being studied. In an attempt to combine all this together we go back to Building 24, which we deconstruct to its basic parts. These will be the main parts of the addition as well, after being transformed: the roof is being transformed to a canopy like the ones found at the warehouses, the steel structure is being transformed to scaffolding and the wooden panels to containers. As to its function, the addition will “complete” the Building’s 24 new function, by creating residences and workspaces.

02 diploma research thesis, 2012-2013 Loft living My diploma research thesis was an outcome of my general interest in the historic industrial buildings. More specifically, I investigate the way they have been reused as residential buildings. The purpose of my work was the study of loft living as a form of habitation. I have studied the history and architecture of the lofts from their first appearance in the 60’s until today. Also I studied the impact loft living had on the psyche of the inhabitants, the lifestyle, architecture, art, society, economy, environment and development of the cities.

04 9th semester studio, 2011-2012 Office building and shopping center This project is about a complex of an office building, a shopping center and a school at the center of Thessaloniki near the sea. The main purpose was to find a solution so these three different uses could co exist without disturbing each other. The shopping center is located on the ground floor and on the -1 level and the shops are organised around the main atrium, which provides them with natural light. On top of it there is the office building, which has 6 floors. The shape of the building has been developed according to many factors,

such as the light, the views and the entrances. Its structure played a very important role and it’s obvious from the outside. There are closed and open offices organised in two main zones and also an amphitheatre at the inclined part of the building. Finally, the school is located underground in order to be more isolated and protected from the noise of the city, offering a big public space on its roof.

05 9th semester studio, 2011-2012 Landscape architecture: the stream This project is about a stream in Thessaloniki, which is now totally abandoned. It is a linear green deep space between the dense urban fabric, which offers total isolation from the sounds of the city. The main idea is the space to work both as a passage and as a space to rest. As a passage it offers through some designed routes a quick access from the one edge to the other. At the same time where the ground is not too inclined we create rest areas, where you can seat by the water or under the trees. The design is done in such a way so as to require the fewest possible interventions. The existing trees are being kept and the

terrain keeps its natural shape at most of its extent. There are two routes. One by the water with a more natural character and one, which follows the terrain on a higher level and at some points works like a bridge, made by deck. The streets that face the stream are being transformed to pedestrian streets and some of them work like secondary entrances. The main goal is the stream to keep its natural character but in a way that will make it more accessible and friendly to the residents of the area.

06 internship at MAM - Adnan Kazmaoglu, 2011 Europe Tower During my 6 weeks internship at MAM - Adnan Kazmaoglu office in Istanbul, I was asked to design two twin towers for a big residential project. Each tower has 24 floors, on each floor there are four different types of apartments and on the ground floor there are shops. The idea was the tower to have a simple square shape in order for the floor plans to be flexible

in order to use differnet types of apartments according to the clients needs. Each apartment has a different kind of balcony. The apartments are being placed at different places on each floor in order for the balconies to form the facades in an interesting way.

07 workshop, 2011 No ID workshop The no ID workshop was about some neighborhoods at Ioannina wich are abandoned and have lost their identity. At this project our team chose a street, which consists of many architectural important buildings for the city’s history, that are now completely abandoned. This street used to be a commercial center with residences on the top floors. Our goal was to bring life there again by creating small open spaces for the citizens. The back yards was a characteristic of those buildings and so we redesign them in order to be attractive and visible from the street. Finally, we propose the top floors to be used as students dwellings,as Ioannina is a city with many students.

08 8th semester studio, 2011 Renovation and reuse of the Old Post The Old Post is a very important building at Thessaloniki’s city center. For the first phase our job was to understand and design the structure of the building and at the second phase to suggest a new use. As part of the revitalization and reuse of the building we suggest the installation of the Visual and Applied Arts department of School of Fine Arts , motivated both by the housing problems that the department is facing , and the typology of the building which offers a variety of spaces of great morphological interest. This connection of the building with a

group of ordinary activities, will create a new “movement” by introducing the re-position of the building in the city, by placing in the heart of the city center a core of culture. All spaces are organized around a central communal area of the atrium, which expands with the opening of some closed spaces in the basement, ground floor and first floor. The interventions that we make are discrete, without creating confusion, and abstraction by applying the essence of “non-permanent” published in www.archstudies.gr

09 workshop, 2011 From iconic to pragmatic This workshop was about redesigning some streets near the new metro stations in Thessaloniki by making small changes. The area around “Patrikios” station is characterized by intense activity throughout the day. Especially the square represents the center of life and attracts people from all ages, offering opportunities for various activities. The region hosts a large number of school facilities indicating the presence of many children. All this led us to the idea of a region that pulsates with life, not only within the narrow boundaries of the square, but beyond that. This led to the creation of a network of sidewalks and “low-traffic”

streets to ensure convenient and safe movement of pedestrians. An important factor is the removal of a large number of parked vehicles from the area, transporting them to available empty spaces. The roads chosen for reshape are Solonos (woonerf ), Lambros Purpura, Philhellenes and Pittakou (pedestrian), and their location makes it possible to link the region with Patrikios highlights of the region and Thessaloniki in general (New Beach, Allatini Hall, etc). published in www.archstudies.gr and Parallaxi Magazine (Issue 170, May 2011, p.22)

10 5th & 6th semester studio, 2009-2010 Small hotel and spa This project is about a small hotel of 50 rooms and a spa at by the sea. The main characteristic of the area is the stream that tears the site in two parts. On the south part there is the spa and on the north the hotel’s lobby and the restaurant. The rooms core extends over the stream connecting the two parts, offering the visitor direct access from his room to all the facilities. The main idea was the whole project to extend horizontally, parallel to the seafront, in order to take maximum advantage of the view.

23

At the second phase of the project we had to study the interior of the room and the structure of the building in high detail.

24

11 5th semester, 2011 Urban planning The case study was a site of 14,8Ha, known with the name Dialogi, near the old train railways at Thessaloniki. The project was about designing a residential area for about 2000 people. Two important elements of the area were a small river Northwest and some old silos Southwest, which were completely abandonded. During the designing process, the goal was to create a place friendly to the residents. There were designed blocks with maximum 4 floors and open spaces in the middle, a central plaza, a pedestrian walk by the river, bicycle roads all over the area and finally the silos were turned into a cultural center.

26

12 4th semester studio, 2010 Small museum of art The project is about a small museum of art by the sea. The central idea is a “flying building, in order for the view towards the sea not to be blocked. The building constists of two volumes: at the bigger one there are the museum, a cafe and a small bookstore and at the other one there is the auditorium. A main element is the ramp, which leads the vistor at a central plaza between the two volumes. There are corridors that surround the building, offering the visitor the chance to have views of the whole site.

27

13 3rd semester studio, 2009-2010 Residence This project is about a residence for a four member family. The common areas are on the ground floor and the bedrooms on the top. The ground floor is organised on three levels, while it follows the ground’s natural inclination.
