Camera! Action! You’re in Bali Province Aims for Bali to Become International Cinematic Center The Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace), received a visit from Indonesian film director Livi Zheng on Saturday, February 23, 2019, who has been nominated for an Academy Award for her film “Bali: Beats of Paradise.” As reported by Beritabali.com, Livi Zheng told Cok Ace how she used Balinese gamelan music in the sound track of her film in order to make the Island’s rich musical heritage known to a wide audience. Livi revealed that “Bali: Beats of Paradise” tells the story of a Balinese gamelan musician, Nyoman Wenten, who works as a ethnomusicologist at the prestigious University of
California in Los Angeles (UCLA), The Herb Alpert School of Music, and CalArts School of Music. The film also shares Wenten’s life-long involvement with gamelan music dating from his childhood in the Balinese village of Sading to his artistic collaboration with megastars of modern music and cinema. Deputy Governor Cok Ace said he hoped that producers and film directors will consider Bali as film location and even consider adopting Balinese themes therby leading the way to Bali becoming a world film laboratory. NEW IN THE GU: LOLA’S CANTINA

Ok so we don’t actually know who Lola is, but we do know that we’re already huge fans of her brand new cantina right on the Canggu shortcut next to Odyssey. Ok in all seriousness though, Lolas Cantina Mexicana is a welcome addition to the food scene in the Gu, serving up tacos morning till night. The menu Desayuno (breakfast for you uncultured ones) is rumoured to house the best brekkie burrito on the island, with a group of our American friends Gojeking it daily to their villa (no joke). While we have yet to experience their Peyote Bowl (a green smoothie bowl) and Huevos Rancheros, we have been for a lunch-turned-dinner-turned-onetoo-many-margaritas, and we can highly recommend this to anyone with an insatiable hunger for fajitas and a high tolerance for jalapeĂąo palomas. Not sure about the rest of you, but we definitely fall under that category! While jalapeĂąo poppers are universally epic - I mean, deep fried cheese with a chilli bite: YUM! - the list of entradas have a few twists we’re huge fans of. Firstly, the aforementioned poppers are available as a vegan option too and secondly, the buffalo cauliflower wings (also vegan, hooray!) are actually INSANE! Crispy and sticky on the outside, and tasty on the inside. No more ayam (đ&#x;?“ ) wings for these girls, the cauliflower ones are that much better. Aaaaand since we seem to be on a roll with the vegan starters, those dirty Mexican fries with extra pulled jackfruit carnitas... Holy guacamole we needed a double serving of this ASAP! Ok while our choice of Lola’s entradas may have been a little more plant-based than is our style, let us assure you that we did get our fair share of meat on our plates - everything from pulled chicken tacos (Ayu’s favourite) to baja fish with chipotle mayo burritos (Lani’s top choice) and grilled steak fajitas that had the rest of the girls fighting for a slice. With fresh guac, Spanish rice and extra sour cream everywhere we remembered to ask for it, you can’t blame us for overstaying our lunch hour and staying well into the dinner time rush. Well, the corn chips with extra guacamole helped, as did the the house-made condiments: the spicy pineapple salsa is actually straight-from-the-bottle good, and if Lola doesn’t start selling the spicy sauces by the litre soon, we won’t be blamed for dropping by to steal a few bottles here and there. Lola - you’ve been warned. But let’s be honest: guacamole will trick us into staying for only so long - it takes a much sturdier tactic to get us to dance the Macarena on the side of the shortcut wearing an electric blue sombrero and advertising 50k margaritas. What is that tactic, you ask? It’s 50k margaritas, of course! Whether you’re a frozen or classic kind of guy or gal, Lola’s happy hour (daily 4-7pm except Taco Tuesdays, when you get a free taco with each cocktail) will keep you entertained for hours as you double fist your margies on your front row seats to the shortcut action. We’ve been to Lola’s Cantina so many times already that it’s definitely shaping up to be a Gu gal regular. With something for everyone (including plenty for our veggo friends), we are stoked to welcome Lola and her Cantina in a pretty epic location in the Gu!
