Sisterhood is Saying What the

Chris & Lauren Tomlin My husband and I are opposites. He’s a “rug sweeper” like Chris Tomlin, and I’m more of a “hammer” like Chris’ wife, Lauren. I laughed when I read their interview because those terms perfectly describe us. Sometimes I ask myself, “Why would God put two people together who are so different?” I prefer to talk about everything, but my husband would prefer to sweep everything under the rug — which, of course, drives me nuts! There have been times when I wanted to walk away from my marriage because of my frustrations. Chris and Lauren’s interview reminded me that differences don’t have to be a bad thing. Their interview made me realize that I haven’t done a good job respecting my husband. When I get frustrated, I don’t show him respect. But it’s hard to keep calm when my husband ignores everything and acts like he doesn’t care. Nothing seems to be a big deal to him. I love the marriage articles in CALLED because I’m always reminded that a good marriage isn’t a problemfree marriage. All marriages come with challenges. Leslie W., Prescott, Arizona Add Sizzle to Your Marriage I won’t claim to be a “good girl,” but I struggle with being sexually free in my marriage. whatever. It’s gotten to the point where it’s affecting my relationship with my husband. I can tell that he feels rejected. Erin McPherson’s story of her husband rubbing her back (sort of instigating sex) and her not responding to him is my day-to-day story. The section titled “You Are Beautifully Made” spoke to me. Two kids, two C-sections, and a thousand stretch marks later, I question if I’m attractive. After I read the article, I read it to my husband. I told him that I don’t feel beautiful anymore. That conversation led to one of the most beautiful moments in our relationship. He kissed every curve, every scar, and every stretch mark. Melissa F., Elmira, New York

When Your Storm Strikes It’s been 13 years since my son, Joey, died, and I’m still hurting. There are days when the pain feels unbearable, especially around Joey’s birthday and holidays. It makes me angry when people compare my pain to something unrelated — pretending to know how I feel. It makes me angry. I know I shouldn’t feel that way, but I’m being honest. I really liked reading “When Your Storm Strikes” because the author lost her only son, like me. She understood the unbearable pain that I feel, and she earned the right to offer advice. Thank you for publishing that article. I really needed direction from someone who personally understands my pain. Connie T., Charlotte, North Carolina

Weapons for Spiritual Warfare How to succeed on the frontlines BY STORMIE OMARTIAN It was most terrifying when an earthquake happened at night. Even if the power didn’t go out, there was no way you could get to a light while the room was shaking violently — unless you kept a flashlight under your pillow. Even then, trying to grab it could be nearly impossible. When a strong earthquake comes, your life feels totally out of control. You [Please Turn the Page]

I lived in Southern California for over four decades, and I experienced the worst earthquakes of that period. I never got used to them. They happened suddenly, without any warning whatsoever. You had no idea how long they would last, how strong they would be, or how much damage they would do. Some earthquakes were so violent, I couldn’t even get to a doorway for safety.

don’t know if you will be killed, buried alive, or badly injured. Spiritual Warfare Much like earthquakes, spiritual warfare can catch you off guard — many people prefer to pretend it isn’t happening. But if Christ is your Savior, you’re in a war with His enemy (the devil). You may think you’re not at war with anyone, but the enemy is at war with you. Most believers pray for God’s will to prevail. But God calls us to do more than that: He calls us to go to battle as prayer warriors for His kingdom. He doesn’t mean a select few. Not just the most spiritual. Not just the ones who “like that kind of thing” or have nothing else to do. He calls all believers to be active in this war. Like soldiers, we must train with our spiritual weapons to prepare for battle. Using our spiritual weapons must become second nature to us. We can’t afford anything less. The Sword of the Spirit Our main weapon is the Word of God. It is highly accurate, and if you aim correctly, it hits the target dead-on every time. The enemy cannot stand against it. When Jesus faced the enemy’s temptation in the wilderness, He resisted with Scripture. And He was victorious. It’s crucial to have verses etched in your memory that you can draw on at all times. You can start with just one verse. Write it down on a notecard, and carry it with you. Tape it to your mirror or refrigerator — wherever you will see it most often. Say it. Proclaim it. Make it a part of you. You will need these Scriptures for the rest of your life, especially when you face the enemy. Worship The enemy despises our worship so much that he can’t be in the presence of anyone actively praising God. When we worship, God’s presence consumes us. So, whenever you want the enemy to flee, start worshipping. Paul told the Ephesians to walk wisely because the days were evil (Ephesians

20

visit CALLEDMagazine.com

“Whenever you feel attacked, start worshipping.” 5:15-16). Doesn’t that sound like today? Aren’t the days evil? Don’t we desperately need to know God’s will? Paul told them, “Do not be drunk with wine … but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord ” (Ephesians 5:18-19). Faith We can’t do anything without faith. “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Strengthen your faith by constantly reminding yourself that God will keep His promises. Your faith will defeat the enemy by empowering all your other weapons. Your prayers will become powerful when you believe that God hears and will answer you. Jesus said, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you will receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:22-24). Prayer Imitate Jesus when you pray. He viewed praying as communion with His heavenly Father. It wasn’t a duty. It was a need. Jesus prayed every morning. “In the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed” (Mark 1:35). Jesus prayed at night. “He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). Jesus prayed alone. “When He had sent

the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there” (Matthew 14:23). Jesus prayed without ceasing. “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36). Jesus could do nothing without praying. “The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner” (John 5:19). When we follow Jesus’ example, we can defeat the enemy.

Become a Prayer Warrior

As believers, we’re at war, whether we want to be or not. God calls us to defeat the devil. In Prayer Warrior, Stormie Omartian reveals the many ways God has equipped us for this calling — and how He leads us to victory.

Despite Your Pain An Inspiring Lesson from Rosalina Matos BY MARSHA DUCILLE

Rosalina was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis at the age of 15.

deteriorates faster than it’s supposed to. […] I have been classified as disabled. Although I have the desire and mental capacity to work, I don’t have the body to work. One week I might be able to work 10 hours, and the next week I can’t work at all because of the magnitude of pain. My illness doesn’t only affect my nervous system; it affects my bones and my organs. I’m tired. I’m easily run down. My body is killing itself, so I’ve had to learn to live with it,” she continued. Was Rosalina hurting? Yes. Was she afraid to die? Yes. Was her faith challenged? Yes. Was she giving up on God? No.

According to researchers at the National Institutes of Health, over 25 million American adults live with chronic pain (extreme discomfort that persists for months or years). Also alarming, pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. Yet, somehow, there are people who (while hardly making it out of bed) find a way to maximize their lives. Rosalina Matos is one of those people. When I heard her speak at Apostolic Camp International in Statesboro, Georgia, my life was forever changed. Heavy tears streamed down my face, and a renewed sense of purpose burned within my spirit. There stood a woman who lived with the chronic pain of Transverse Myelitis (an excruciating neurological disorder); nevertheless, she preached with the strength of a warrior. It appeared that nothing, not even agonizing pain, could keep her from preaching the Gospel. “It’s a very painful life,” Rosalina shared. “Some people never regain mobility. Some people live that way for the rest of their lives. They never walk again. The nervous system breaks down. Even though your body is healthy, it tells itself that it’s not. So, your body

22

With hardly enough strength to hold herself up, Rosalina declared: “Even if God doesn't give us what we ask for, He is still God. We must worship Him for who He is, not for what we want. And even if God doesn’t heal me, He is still God … and I will worship Him anyway!” As I listened to Rosalina, I quickly encountered a myriad of emotions. First, I felt admiration: “Lord, this woman is using everything — even her pain — to serve You.” Next, I felt shame: “Lord, forgive me for not doing more with my life.” Then, I felt determined: “Lord, I will no longer limit my purpose with excuses.” God Uses Her, and He Wants to Use You Rosalina’s life and ministry should make us all ask, “Am I using everything (the good and painful) to serve God?” Whether you feel physically feeble or spiritually weak, God has planted a purpose inside of you. Your pain can’t stop that purpose; your circumstances can’t block that purpose; and your mistakes can’t abort that purpose. Psalm 150:6 instructs, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (New International Version). So, if you’re still breathing, God wants to use you. CALLED Magazine | Volume 8, Issue 52, 2015 No case is typical. You should not expect to experience these results.

“If you’re still breathing, God wants to use you.”

Each year, doctors diagnose 1,400 new cases of Transverse Myelitis.

Stop making excuses. Even Moses, one of God’s greatest servants, tried to “excuse” his way out of his calling. Moses said to the Lord, “But, Lord, I am telling you, I am not a good speaker. I have never been able to speak well. And that hasn’t changed since You started talking to me. I am still not a good speaker. You know that I speak slowly and don’t use the best words.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Who made a person’s mouth? And who can make someone deaf or not able to speak? Who can make a person blind? Who can make a person able to see? I am the One. I am the Lord. So go. I will be with you when you speak. I will give you the words to say” (Easy-to-Read Version). Stop living in shame. People often think that they need great connections and pristine reputations to serve God. But, while those things are helpful, God requires a different set of credentials. He has an interesting habit of using people who are weak, rejected, and downright questionable. In fact, there were

24

visit CALLEDMagazine.com

four unlikely women in Christ’s genealogy: one acted like a harlot (Tamar); one was a Gentile (Ruth); one was an adulteress (Bathsheba); and one was a prostitute (Rahab). What does that tell you? It tells you that God will use anyone — even those who society rejects and condemns. Always remember, “The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by [the] outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7, New Living Translation). Do it, despite it all. In John 16:33 Jesus warned, “While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world” (Contemporary English Version). As Christians, some of us will suffer because of our faith. And, as humans, many of us will suffer because of “life” and our mortality. Nevertheless, we must remember that earth isn’t our permanent home. We are temporarily here to serve God, worship God, and proclaim His Goodness … despite whatever we face … despite our desire to give up … and despite the pain we feel.

A few simple ways to find peace BY JILLIAN HALL Stress has a bad reputation. Numerous studies have revealed its negative effects on our health and emotional well-being. But did you know that God gave us stress for a reason? He did! Stress saved our ancestors from threats and predators by triggering life-saving responses. It allowed their bodies to turn off non-essential functions during fight-or-flight situations. But we no longer run from predators on a regular basis. Instead, we live in a world that brings us stress in new ways.

26

visit CALLEDMagazine.com

It still causes the same bodily reactions, but its relentlessness is damaging, rather than protective. Luckily, God also gave us ways to combat these negative effects. Try these unexpected stress-relieving activities. Smile more. You probably thought that smiling was a reflection of happiness. But studies show that the simple act of smiling (no matter how you feel) can boost your mood in stressful situations. Pet your animals. Just 15 minutes spent petting your dog releases feel-good hormones (like serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin). It also reduces the stress hormone cortisol, according to a University of Missouri-Columbia study. It can even lower blood pressure, aid in heart disease recovery, and improve self-esteem. Praise the Lord. “For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I will sing for joy” (Psalm 63:7). Taking time for gratitude has numerous health benefits, but singing praises to God may amplify that effect. According to some studies, an organ in the inner ear may be connected to the brain region that registers pleasure. So, sing your stress away. Make memories. Research has proven that experiences make us happier than possessions. Therefore, invest in meaningful life experiences. You’ll not only have happy memories, you’ll also feel less pressure to acquire “stuff.” Connect with others. God created us for relationships and gave us communities to manage life’s challenges. He knew it wasn’t good for us to be alone (Genesis 2:18). Studies have even shown that those with strong social ties live longer, healthier lives. Keep a journal. Writing can help you process stressful events and reduce your anxiety. Try jotting down a few thoughts each day. No editing. Don’t over-think it. It’s the action (not the content) that matters. Take deep breaths. Has anyone ever told you to “take a deep breath” when you were upset? According to the American Institute of Stress, taking deep breaths for 20 to 30 minutes each day can calm your body’s stress reactions. Focusing on breathing deeply may also have a calming effect during stressful situations.

I love the cable show What Not to Wear. I haven’t achieved wardrobe perfection yet, but I have become more aware of what constitutes a fashion risk. In a similar way, I want you to learn “What Not to Do” in your financial life. We live in a fast-paced, peer-pressured, consumer-driven world. The way to counter those things is to learn what not to do with your money. Don’t Live on Credit Debt, particularly unsecured, consumer debt (think credit card debt, personal or student loans, and any other debt not secured by valuable assets) is like cancer. It starts small and may even be manageable. But then, it will grow and sabotage your financial future. When you can no longer pay your balance in full (opting for the minimum payment due), you’ve reached a dangerous place in your life. Don’t Live an Overstated Lifestyle According to columnist Ellen Goodman, “Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work … and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for … in order to get to the job [that pays] for the clothes, the car, and the

house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.” Think about how crazy that is. You may not depend on credit to get through every month, but you may spend every last nickel on a pretentious lifestyle. When an inevitable disaster hits, it won’t be pretty. A frugal lifestyle (in which you give, save, and live below your means) will make you much happier. If your leased cars, mortgaged furniture, private school tuition, cable TV, shopping sprees, and $300 monthly mobile data plans keep you from regularly giving, saving, and preparing for retirement, you’re living way beyond your means. And for what? To impress the neighbors? To make sure your family looks good? Don’t Strip Home Equity Lenders will encourage you to access your home’s equity to resolve credit card debt, pay for major life events (like a wedding), or buy a much-deserved swimming pool. That’s a lousy idea with dangerous consequences. If you move debt to your home and can’t make those big payments, you’ll lose your home through foreclosure. Stop looking at your home’s equity as a pool of money to dip into. Buckle down, and get [Please Turn the Page]

serious about paying off your credit cards now. Stop looking for shortcuts and phony fixes. Start paying and stop charging. Don’t Raid Retirement Accounts When it comes to your employersponsored retirement plan, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can’t take advantage of investing your untaxed income and also have unrestricted access to the funds. The money you are investing is for retirement. The government allows you to invest pretax dollars. But here’s the deal: you must relinquish access to that money until you reach retirement age. Most retirement plans allow you to borrow from your account for immediate needs — which is, in my opinion, unfortunate. Although taking a loan may seem like an easy way to cover a big expense, it has serious drawbacks. Once you take money from the account, you stop growth momentum. Never forget that it’s not the amount of money you put into the account that makes the difference. It’s the compounding growth over a long time

that is going to turn your meager deposits into something glorious. Don’t think of your retirement account as a liquid asset. It’s a frozen asset that is out of reach for now. Direct your energy instead toward reducing your expenses. Living beneath your means will eliminate the temptation to borrow from your retirement account. Don’t Procrastinate Many people incorrectly assume it will be easier to save for retirement later in their careers, so they put it off. In reality, procrastination is just wealth suicide on an installment plan. The old way of thinking was to pay off the mortgage, pay for the kids’ college, and then save for retirement. That worked fine when life expectancies were much shorter. But nowadays, you may spend almost as many years in retirement as you did in your career. As a result, you need a bigger nest egg than previous generations. A bigger nest egg requires a more aggressive approach to retirement savings while you’re still working.

Design a Home You Love Tips that make home decorating easy BY MELISSA MICHAELS Most women want beautiful homes; however, creating them is easier said than done. When I started decorating my home, I wasn’t sure how to create my “look.” I was that crazy-eyed, indecisive woman who flipped through magazines, perused Pinterest, headed out to shop, and became overwhelmed by possibilities! But that doesn’t have to be you. With a few tips, creating effortless designs can be a breeze.

The Design Rule of Two-Thirds Scale brings visual order and harmony to a space. If your furniture is too large, a room can feel cramped. If your furniture is too small, a room can feel empty. However, the two-thirds rule gives you a reliable guide for décor proportions. It ensures that every piece enhances your design, without disrupting the balance of the space. Here’s how it works: • Furniture should fill about two-thirds of your room. • A coffee table or ottoman should be two-thirds of the width of your sofa. • Artwork and mirrors (above a sofa or bed) should be approximately two-thirds of the width of what is below. Spark Conversation Design your home around your needs, instead of a “look.” By carefully choosing and arranging furniture, you can create different activity-zones. For example, in a large space, you can have a zone for watching television, a zone for reading, a zone for chatting, and/or a zone for board games. • Start with the largest piece of furniture, usually your sofa, and add pieces from there. • Place furniture close enough together to allow for effortless conversation that won’t turn into an unintentional shouting match. • Use seating pieces that are similar heights and scales, so no one feels taller than others.

• Make the most of large rooms by establishing more than one conversation area. Two chairs in a corner create a cozy place for a more private conversation. • Add flexibility by incorporating lone chairs, footstools, and benches.

Be fearless and mix your patterns.

How to Mix Patterns Pattern combinations add visual interest to any design, but many women are afraid of mixing and matching. To make mingling patterns seem more manageable, consider starting with a limited [Please Turn the Page]

• Place a tray or table within reach of every seat for easy access. You can also use small stools or ottomans.

size from the ceiling down to the baseboard. Then use a level (a laser level is ideal) to precisely mark pencil lines across the wall’s width. Ceilings aren’t always straight, so use the level as your guide. 4. Carefully apply painter’s tape just above the top pencil line and just below the second pencil line. Then continue this pattern down the wall for the rest of the stripes. Make sure you tape inside the base-colored stripes, exposing the full area of wall intended for alternate stripes. 5. Seal the tape so the stripe color won’t bleed. For example, if you’re using a semi-gloss white for your alternate stripe, paint your base color right over the edges of your tape in the area where you’re going to paint white stripes. As it dries, it seals the tape! 6. Paint your stripes; allow them to dry; and remove the tape to reveal perfectly crisp lines!

color palette. Then use these tips to mix, match, and experiment: •Two patterns will look best together when connected by a common color (even if they are different shades). • Combine three or more patterns in a room. • Choose a large-scale pattern and a small-scale pattern in the same color family. Then add solid colors for balance. • Use more than one stripe style (as long as one is wide and the other is narrow). • Use neutral tones on walls and flooring to unite the patterns in the room. • If most of the room is neutral, use art or objects to add interesting patterns. • Wood grains and stone can add organic patterns to a room. • It’s safer to mix patterns in similar styles (traditional with traditional or contemporary with contemporary).

DIY: Painted Horizontal Stripes You’ll need:

Find Your Inner-Decorator

• Paint brush • 2 colors of paint • Tape measure • Level • Pencil • Painter’s tape Here’s how: 1. Paint your wall a base color (which will become one of the two stripe colors). Make sure that the base color is different from your ceiling, baseboard, or trim color. 2. Measure the height of the wall, and divide by an odd number to set the size and number of stripes. Eight-inch to twelve-inch stripes are visually pleasing. 3. Use a measuring tape and a pencil to measure and mark the stripe

With cheerful candor, Melissa Michaels explains how to create a design that reflects your authentic self – without feeling overwhelmed or breaking the bank. You’ll want to try every how-to in this book.

Do You Know the seven Deadly Sins of Parenting? In a world where parenting advice shifts faster than fashion trends, Patrick Quinn’s “how not-to parent” resource takes a fresh look at how the Seven Deadly Sins are the root of most modern parenting problems. Through humorous stories and practical biblical wisdom, he shows how well-meaning parents can ruin their children’s lives in seven easy steps (wrath, greed, envy, lust, sloth, gluttony, and pride). Quinn then offers a fresh counter-approach – laying a seven-fold foundation for lasting significance where parents can help rescue their children’s heart...and future.

Healthy Food Swaps Switch things up for more nutritious meals BY MONIQUE HART Let’s face it ladies: diets don’t work. Crazy food trends are mostly unsustainable (or are at least budget busters). And emerging information about processed foods is alarming. The good news is that you don’t have to follow the crowd or give in to hysteria. Trying a few easy food swaps can give you the nutrients you need … without turning things upside down.

38

Don’t Use: Sugar Use: Cinnamon Why: Cinnamon makes things seem sweeter, without the calories. Unlike sugar, it also helps reduce blood sugar levels. Try: Add a touch of cinnamon to your morning coffee, and reduce the amount of sugar you add.

Don’t Use: Salt Use: Lemon Juice Why: While adding flavor to meals, lemon juice is a source of vitamin C and an alkaline food that can help balance your body’s pH. Try: Roast broccoli, and season it with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Don’t Use: Artificial Syrup Use: Pure Maple Syrup Why: Pure maple syrup boosts your immune system and is full of antioxidants, which fight signs of aging and reduce the risk of cancer. Try: Add apples, almonds, and maple syrup to a bowl of oatmeal for a fun twist on a bland breakfast.

Don’t Use: Milk Chocolate Use: Dark Chocolate Why: Dark chocolate is a hearthealthy treat that is full of antioxidants and can even help lower your blood pressure. It provides indulgence with benefits. Try: Melt dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, and add almonds for a decadent treat that is packed with nutrients.

Don’t Use: Iceberg Lettuce Use: Raw Spinach Why: Iceberg lettuce is mostly water, whereas spinach is full of vitamins and nutrients that are important for growth, vision, and immunity. Try: Use olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dress a raw spinach, strawberries, and walnut salad. [Please Turn the Page]

Don’t Use: Russet Potatoes Use: Sweet Potatoes Why: Sweet potatoes are one of nature’s best sources of beta-carotene and have essential anti-inflammatory properties. Try: Bake sweet potatoes at 375 degrees until tender (45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on size), and allow them to cool enough for handling. Scoop out the tender insides, and add seasonings and olive oil.

Don’t Use: Bagels Use: English Muffins Why: English muffins can deliver your carb fix, while also doubling as a good source of fiber. Try: For a boost of protein, add a smear of peanut butter.

Don’t Use: Creamy Salad Dressing Use: Olive Oil and Vinegar Why: Olive oil’s monounsaturated fat can protect you from heart disease, and vinegar can help lower your glucose levels. Try: Use balsamic vinegar for a sweeter flavor.

Don’t Use: Potato Chips Use: Air-Popped Popcorn Why: As a natural whole grain, popcorn provides filling fiber with a fraction of the calories. Try: Grate Parmesan cheese over freshly popped popcorn to make it a special treat.

Don’t Use: Pasta Use: Spaghetti Squash Why: Spaghetti squash will nourish you with a wide range of vitamins, like vitamin C, folate, and vitamin K, without the carb overload. Try: Bake your spaghetti squash whole at 400 degrees (for 40 to 45 minutes to make it easier to cut and clean). Remove the seeds, and spread a hearty meat sauce over the top for a healthy dinner.

Don’t Use: Rice Use: Quinoa Why: Protein-rich quinoa contains significant amounts of fiber and iron. Try: Make your favorite version of fried rice, but use quinoa instead. Don’t Use: Soda Use: Seltzer Why: Seltzer, or carbonated water, is a great sugar-free soda alternative that will keep you hydrated. Try: Add a spritz of your favorite citrus juice to give your seltzer a twist.

Is Bulk Buying Right for You? Choose products that make sense BY SAMANTHA WRIGHT Thanks to warehouse stores (like Costco, Sam’s, and BJ’s), buying in bulk has become trendy. But, while bulk purchases can save you money, sometimes they don’t make sense. It’s possible you won’t save much, won’t have enough storage space, or won’t use the entire purchase before it expires. So, before you buy your next 100-count of toilet paper, consider whether it’s worth it. Ask yourself: • How much storage do you have? Is the savings on the item worth the space it will take up in your home?

• Have you tried the product before? Do you know for sure that you like it? Don’t waste your money buying in bulk, unless you’re certain about the item. • Is it something you actually need? Buying in bulk only works if you actually need the product. Just because it’s cheaper to buy a five-pack of shirts, doesn’t mean it’s better — particularly if you’re spending money on something you don’t need. • Will you use this product before its shelf life is over? Some items, like bleach (which lasts for 6 months), have a shorter shelf life than you may expect. • Could you split the product with someone you know? Consider starting a bulk-buying co-op with family and friends. This allows you to take advantage of the lower price per unit, without cluttering your home with stuff you might not use. For example, if you buy a megapack of toilet paper, you can split the price and quantity with other people.

• What is the unit price for each item? For example, does each roll of toilet paper cost less in a 100-count versus a 24-count? If a 24-count of toilet paper is $12.00, each roll costs $0.50. If a 100-count of toilet paper is $50.00, each roll also costs $0.50. If the unit price isn’t lower, you shouldn’t bulk-buy that item.

Store cereal in airtight containers to keep it fresh. Even when bought in bulk, these items store easily. Paper products offer a good price per unit, but can take up lots of storage space. This daily essential will last for 2 years! Store batteries in a cool, dry place so they’ll last longer. You can store dry dog food for up to 1 year. Purchase only items your family will consume before they spoil. These items will only last 5 to 7 days in your pantry, and they'll lose their original taste if you freeze them. Take advantage of grocery store sales, rather than wholesale options. Whole grains only have a shelf life of 3 to 6 months. Single ladies might not generate enough trash to make this purchase worth storing. These products require lots of storage space. Reuse a soap dispenser, and buy refills in bulk. Larger bottles offer lower prices per unit. Proceed with caution. Don’t bulk-buy a diaper size your child has nearly outgrown. Gift card packages offer discounts of up to 20%. Vitamins can last for up to 1 year before losing potency. You can freeze meat for 4 to 12 months. Snacks have a long shelf life, but be mindful of their nutritional value. Bulk butter is cheaper, but it spoils after approximately 1 month. Freeze nuts to keep them from going rancid.

Make sure he knows how you feel BY HELEN CHANNING

It was a Friday night, much like any other night during our third year of marriage. The light from the kitchen spilled into our family room as we watched yet another action movie (in which a good guy fought valiantly against a bad guy and won … surprise!). My husband and I had hardly talked before we sat down on separate couches. We watched the movie in silence. But my mind was racing. I wondered, “Are things supposed to be this dull already? Isn’t there more to look forward to on a Friday night than gore and guns? What happened to the romance?!” It seemed like yesterday that we met at a friend’s wedding; back then, the spark was natural and effortless. I hardly even remember the wedding or the weeks that followed it — it never mattered where we went or what we did. Just having his attention thrilled me.

46

I didn’t feel like I had his attention that night, as we munched handful after handful of popcorn. I could’ve left the house in a flurry and headed out for a weekend getaway — and he still wouldn’t have noticed. We had the occasional spat, but who doesn’t? We still enjoyed each other’s company. We were still in love. What was missing? Without any luck, I spent a week trying to figure it out. Then, after a particularly rough day at work, I found myself craving his embrace more than ever. So, I waited on our front porch for him to come home. By the time his headlights rounded the corner, it had begun to sprinkle lightly, but I still waited to walk in with him. As he opened his car door, I suddenly saw the man who had once nervously asked me to dance the Chicken Dance with him. He was glowing. [Please Turn the Page]

Easy Ways to Make a Difference

obert G. LeTourneau rose from humble beginnings and became a giant in the 20th century manufacturing industry. He accumulated over 300 patents in his lifetime, built a successful company, and established an inspiring legacy for Christians. But, he almost missed his opportunity to do any of those things. LeTourneau nearly became a missionary after facing professional hardships, but his minister encouraged him to take God into the business world. From that moment forward, LeTourneau viewed himself as God’s business partner. That identity influenced everything about his work — from management strategies to employee benefits. Each of his manufacturing plants had a site chaplain who led daily services. His company quickly grew to include three plants and gross over $1 million annually (about $14 million today). Throughout this success, LeTourneau continued to consider his “business partner’s” stake in his profits. He and his wife, Evylin, decided to give 90 percent of their income to God’s work, while living on the other 10 percent. He always said, “It’s not how much of my money I give to God; it’s how much of God’s money I keep for myself.” Together, they established the LeTourneau Foundation, which effectively managed their increasing donations. They also passionately supported education by opening a technical institute that would later become LeTourneau University. You may have also heard of the LeTourneau Christian Center in New York. The generous couple shared Dr. Harold Strathearn’s vision of an

evangelical haven for recreation, instruction, and rest. Their financial contributions ensured that the vision was realized. All of these endeavors live on today. An astonishing 84 percent of Christians already prioritize giving, and 66 percent volunteer. And yet, LeTourneau’s example encourages us to do more. We know that giving more is a huge challenge. That’s why our editors set out to find easy ways to make a difference … with just a few small changes in our daily lives. Start At Your Church Do you ever linger to chat with friends after church? What if you could meet a crucial need in your church by staying just a few minutes longer? In most churches, just 20 percent of people do 80 percent of the work. The 20 percent would gladly welcome your help! Churches have plenty of needs. All you need to do is ask. Online Shopping Today’s technology creates far more giving opportunities than there were in LeTourneau’s time. By shopping through GoodSearch.com, your favorite cause will receive a portion of your purchase cost, at no additional charge to you. Since approximately two-thirds of adults already shop online, this change in your routine is a no-brainer! Choose Products Wisely Americans spend approximately $38.05 per second on unnecessary consumer products. At that rate, consumers have a lot of giving power — if they

choose products carefully. Philanthropic companies help your purchases mean something. For example, TOMS donates one pair of shoes to an impoverished child every time you purchase a pair. Go for a Walk With the app from CharityMiles.org, you can track your walks, runs, or bike rides to earn $0.10 to $0.25 per mile. Most Americans only walk an average of 5,117 steps each day, even though experts recommend 10,000. If you aren’t already taking daily walks, it might be time to start. You can give to others while doing something good for yourself! Play a Game A Pew Research Center survey revealed that about 64 percent of Americans own smartphones, and a large percentage of people play games on them. Sites like FreeRice.com allow you to play games for good! Every time you answer a trivia question correctly, the the site helps end hunger by donating 10 grains of rice to The World Food Programme. Double Down If you’re already giving, you may be able to double the amount without spending more. Many large companies have giftmatching programs that allow them to earn tax deductions. By asking your employer to match your charitable contributions, you can easily increase donations for your favorite charity. Give Yourself Literally. Every two seconds, someone needs blood. Every minute, 24 people find out they have cancer. You could change someone’s life by donating your blood or hair to charity. You can partner with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive at your church, school, or workplace.

Eat vegetables or fruits with each meal Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, fruits and vegetables contain fiber, which is more filling than processed foods. You’ll walk away from every meal feeling more satisfied and energized.

8.

Sit down, and slow down Sitting down and eating slowly gives your brain time to process that you’re full. This will help you eat less and consume fewer calories.

1.

Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep tonight A recent study showed that women who slept less than 5 hours per night were twice as likely to have hypertension as women who slept for 7 hours. Getting some extra ZZZs can provide benefits beyond feeling well rested.

5.

Go for a 30-minute walk Working out for 30 minutes each day can lower bad cholesterol (LDL), increase good cholesterol (HDL), and reduce your risk for heart disease and diabetes. You're just steps away from better health.

Make a doctor’s appointment Having regular check-ups and screenings can prevent serious illnesses and even allow early detection of diseases. Staying healthy will help you stay on top of the demands of your hectic life.

2.

Drink more water Replace all juices and soda with water. Substituting water for sugary, high-caloric drinks will help with weight loss and prevent constipation.

3.

Sit up straight Improving your posture helps your core muscles work better. Simply engaging your core can lead to a flatter, more toned midsection and alleviates some back issues.

4.

Take a deep breath In stressful situations, taking deep breaths can slow your heartbeat and lower your blood pressure. Since stress can wreak havoc on both your mind and your body, managing it is a major key to well-being.

eligion may not publicly impact how officials govern our nation, but maybe it should influence how Christians vote. We found that the Bible speaks clearly on some unexpected topics — topics that are up for debate during the 2016 presidential election. To help you compare the Republican front runners, we researched each candidate’s views on these issues and created a scorecard that assesses how they measure up to the Bible. The scores are based on each candidate’s political ideology, the thoroughness of their plans, and how well their strategies align with biblical principles. [Please Turn the Page]

Budget Deficit

Proverbs 22:7 teaches that “The borrower is the slave of the lender.” Numerous verses warn us that borrowing is risky business. Imagine how much more dangerous deepening debt is for a nation! We are also warned not to leave debt unpaid: “The wicked borrow but do not pay back, but the righteous are generous and give” (Psalm 37:21). As the budget deficit grows, we’re not only becoming further enslaved to other nations, we’re failing to fulfill our biblical responsibility to repay our debt. Related Scriptures: Exodus 22:2527; Deuteronomy 15:1-2, 23:20, 28:12; Nehemiah 5:3-4; Proverbs 5:15, 11:15, 13:22, 22:26, 21:20; Matthew 6:24, 6:33; Luke 12:59, 14:28, 16:10-13; Romans 12:1-2, 13:7-8 Bush: In Florida, Bush balanced the state budget as governor; however, as president, he would focus on stimulating economic growth through a new tax system. His proposed tax cuts could increase the federal deficit by $1 trillion to $3 trillion over the next 10 years. Bush is one of the few candidates not focused on decreasing the national debt. Grade: F Carson: Carson has become disillusioned with political figures who, in his words, “cannot grasp the concept of spending only what you have.” He strongly supports the ratification of a balanced budget amendment (which would prevent the government from overspending its income). Carson warns that budget cuts might be painful, but that they’ll be far less difficult than bankruptcy. He also proposes that all government agencies and departments cut 10 percent of their budgets, with no exceptions. Grade: A Cruz: During a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2014, Cruz passionately stated, “We need to stop bankrupting our country.” He supports passing a balanced budget amendment that would halt the nation’s increasing deficit. He has focused largely on the impact that this debt will have on future generations, who will inherit the consequences of present decisions. Grade: B+

Carson strongly supports the ratification of a balanced budget amendment (which would prevent the government from overspending its income).

Fiorina: Fiorina’s advocacy for zerobased budgeting has set her apart from the GOP field. This approach would reset the budget every year, so that funding discussions would start at a base of zero and build from there. The existing budgeting process starts with the funding figures each department received the previous year. This practice encourages departments to spend their budgets in full, regardless of actual need, in an effort to preserve funding. Grade: B+ Rubio: Rubio’s goal would be to balance the budget within 10 years. In an effort to curb spending, he has also recommended freezing spending in all areas (other than defense) at 2008 levels. His vote for the Senate Republican plan in March 2015 (which balances the budget and cuts $4.3 trillion in spending) exhibits his commitment to this initiative. He believes that the nation’s debt creates national uncertainty. While balancing the

budget, Rubio also advocates for prioritizing defense spending. Grade: A Trump: Trump has speculated that if government spending continues unchecked, the United States will find itself in a position similar to Greece. He proposes a one-time, 14.25 percent tax on wealthy Americans to raise $5.7 trillion to reduce the nation’s debt. He also supports further budget cuts to reign in future spending. Grade: A+

The Bible tells us how to treat our enemies: “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord’” (Romans 12:19). BUT it also supports the government’s authority in executing the law and delivering God’s wrath. “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment […] But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer” (Romans 13:1-4). However, after the 2015 tragedy in Paris, he said, “We should declare war and harness all of the power that the United States can bring to bear […] to take out ISIS.” His ultimate goal would be to develop a comprehensive plan that also outlines future measures. He would strengthen the military because he views it as an essential element in international leadership. Like many other candidates, he remains suspicious of Iran and would cancel the nuclear deal entirely. Along those lines, he would also recover relations with Israel and its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Although many candidates agree that Russia’s antics are problematic, Bush has considered sending troops to the affected regions. Grade: A+ Carson: Carson emphasizes the United States’ obligation to provide ethical world leadership and to recover its ties with Israel. He expressed dismay that

our leaders have concerned themselves with “politically correct wars,” noting that political correctness has no place in war. Carson is also against reductions in military preparedness and spending. He would give the military resources to effectively destroy the Islamic militant group in Syria. Grade: A Cruz: Cruz believes that the United States has faltered in its role as a world leader. He says that this weakness has invited enemies to challenge America’s power. He expects to take a much stronger approach to foreign policy, and he unapologetically supports freedom. He was one of the most vocal opponents of the Iran nuclear deal. He views arming Kurdish forces in Syria as the most viable option for defeating Islamic militants. However, he has noted that he would deploy armed forces if initial strategies were ineffective. He also introduced a congressional measure to block American Islamic militants from returning to the United States. Grade: A Fiorina: Fiorina believes that complications in the Middle East have resulted from President Obama’s confusion between ending war and securing peace. She views these as separate goals that require unique strategies. She is also concerned that ally relations have been weakened by inconsistencies between the United States’ actions and intentions. In an effort to repair these relations, she supported ending nuclear talks with Iran. Fiorina would consider future nuclear talks with the implementation of more inspections, verifications, and compliance measures. She would also focus on improving intelligence efforts to prevent future terrorist attacks (with an emphasis on improved communication between agencies). Like many other candidates, she would continue to combat Islamic militants in Syria by supplying more weapons to Kurdish forces. Grade: B Rubio: One of Rubio’s top priorities would be modernizing our armed forces. He would take a much stronger approach toward the threat in Syria. The recent terror attacks in Paris led him to call for the invocation of Article 5 of the NATO

agreement. He supported ending nuclear talks with Iran and increasing sanctions on the country. His experience on the congressional Committee on Foreign Relations may allow him to offer a comprehensive view of foreign policy. He emphasized the need to focus on relations with other countries at The Summit of the Americas, and he strongly opposed President Obama’s recent ties with the dictatorial Cuban regime. Grade: A+ Trump: In stark opposition to current policies, Trump would have halted nuclear talks with Iran and bolstered the United States’ relationship with Israel. Trump said, “I love America. And when you love something, you protect it passionately — fiercely, even.” With that in mind, Trump believes that foreign policy should put American interests first, maximize military preparedness, strengthen ally ties (while distancing enemies), seek preemptive action, and pursue technological innovation. Trump would send a limited number of combat troops to strengthen efforts on the ground in Syria. Grade: A

(founder of the Not Here Justice in Action Network), you can divide the Greek word that is translated as “hospitality” into two parts. The first part, “Philao,” means “to love like a brother.” The second part, “Xenos,” means “stranger” or “immigrant.” This closer look at “hospitality” reveals that Christians have been called to love

strangers and immigrants as their brothers. Furthermore, Christians are themselves sojourners in this world; “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). As a result, the Bible repeatedly sends us the message that we should treat sojourners as our own. “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself …” (Leviticus 19:33-34). Bush once offered empathy to illegal immigrants, saying, “They broke the law, but it's not a felony. It's an act of love. It's an act of commitment to your family.” He also supports the DREAM Act (which helps people who were brought to the country illegally as children). Republican Front-Runners deported and returned again, illegally. He also firmly opposes a path to legal status for all illegal immigrants. He has even opposed legal immigration measures, such as doubling the number of green cards issued each year. Grade: F Fiorina: Fiorina supported the DREAM Act for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children; however, she also holds that a direct path to citizenship for other illegal immigrants would be unjust. Her first priority in addressing the immigration issue would be securing the border. She stated in an interview with Fox News, “A nation that cannot secure its border cannot protect its sovereignty.” She believes that existing legal immigration practices are problematic because they don’t adequately track visas, employment records, or people who cross the border regularly. She also supports eliminating sanctuary cities. Grade: B Rubio: Rubio’s position on immigration has fluctuated over the years. Though he initially opposed a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, he supported a 2013

proposal that would have established one. After that legislation was unsuccessful, he shifted his focus toward a step-bystep approach. He would now start by implementing measures to stop illegal immigrants from crossing our borders. He would then develop a plan to address those already living in our country illegally (likely offering them a long and arduous path to citizenship through registration). Grade: B Trump: Trump’s brash statements about illegal immigrants have made headlines. In addition to building a wall across the Mexican border and increasing fees for all methods of entering the country there, he opposes any path to legalization for undocumented immigrants. He has even proposed deporting them all. He has also criticized people who take advantage of birthright citizenship — stating that they grossly misinterpret the 14th Amendment. Trump would, however, encourage increased immigration from Europe. Grade: F

Education

Knowledge and wisdom are essential to life. “Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life” (Proverbs 4:13). If something is that highly regarded in the Bible, we should also value it. The education system in the United States is challenged with inequity and poor performance. “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me” (Hosea 4:6). As Christians who see our nation’s need and understand its consequences, we should weigh this issue heavily. Related Scriptures: Deuteronomy 11:19; Psalm 32:8-9; Proverbs 1:1-33, 4:1, 4:13, 9:9-10, 10:14, 16:3, 18:15, 23:12; Ecclesiastes 7:12, 12:9-12; Daniel 1:17; Hosea 4:6; Romans 12:2; James 1:5; 2 Peter 1:5; 1 John 3:17 Bush: Bush opposes federal interference in educational standards. its borders. He also wants to address the issue of people overstaying time limits on legal visas. He has called for the elimination of sanctuary cities. Grade: A Carson: In his book, America the Beautiful, Carson wrote: “Is it moral for us, for example, to take advantage of cheap labor from illegal immigrants while denying them citizenship? I'm sure you can tell from the way I phrased the question that I believe we have taken the moral low road on this issue.” However, Carson holds that granting amnesty to illegal immigrants would be a major disservice to others attempting to enter the country legally. He has also encouraged improved border security. Carson advocates for a guestworker program (similar to Canada’s) that would force illegal immigrants to leave the country and then apply for benefits to return. He also believes that there should be harsher penalties for companies who employ illegal immigrants. Grade: A Cruz: Cruz supported a law that would impose a five-year prison sentence on undocumented immigrants who were

He has additionally noted that our nation’s government was established for a wellinformed and educated population; the education system is essential to effective citizenship. Grade: A+ Cruz: Cruz vehemently opposes federal involvement (via Common Core) in education and supports competition as a way to improve school performance. He believes that these measures would allow every child — regardless of race, wealth, or location — to have a quality education. Cruz supports the Local Control of Education Act, which offers states a way out of Common Core standards without losing federal grant money. Grade: B Fiorina: In the past, Fiorina has advocated for metric-based accountability in schools. She also supported No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top because she believed they established competitive achievement goals. She believes that improving education through local control would help close the achievement gap. She also supports competition between schools as a viable means for improving the education system. Grade: B Rubio: Rubio strongly supports curriculum reform and believes our education system is in dire need of

between schools, and the discontinuation of “social promotions” between grades (which promote students to a higher grade, despite poor performance). He also strongly opposes teachers’ unions and believes they must be dismantled. While he views Common Core as a way to improve education, he believes that there should be no federal incentive to use it and that local governments should manage its implementation. In Florida, during his time as governor, low-income children made the largest gains in the nation. Grade: A Carson: While Carson supports higher standards for academic performance, he opposes federal involvement through Common Core. Instead, he believes that parents, teachers, and local school leaders (who have children’s best interests at heart) should build rigorous curriculums. He also supports using voucher systems, charter schools, and private schools to improve education through competition. At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February 2015 he said, “I'm ready for school choice. We need to recognize [that] education is the great liberator in our country. No one has to be a victim.” This idea has spurred his strong support for educational improvements.

improvements. However, he agrees with other candidates that those changes must happen at the local level, where parents have the most influence. He has also warned against Common Core, noting that what is currently a “suggestion” is likely to become a federal mandate. He supports increased school competition through parental choice. Unlike other candidates, Rubio has also focused on higher education. He wants to improve public school vocational training programs, which offer cost-effective access to millions of jobs. He has also criticized the higher education system as being “outdated” and “expensive.” He further proposes educating students about the costs and benefits of taking out student loans. Grade: A+ Trump: Trump holds that reviving the inadequate education system is crucial to making the United States competitive with other nations. He believes that unmotivated teachers, insufficient standards, and poor implementation have done a disservice to children. However, he strongly believes that the federal role in education has grossly overstepped its bounds and that Common Core should be repealed entirely. He also wants to facilitate heightened competition between schools through expanded parent choice and voucher systems. He has criticized teachers’ unions for hampering progress in this area. uppose you’re in an operating room awaiting surgery. The nurse has just given you a sedative. Suddenly you catch a glimpse of the surgeon. He’s in the corner of the room, wringing his hands. His face expresses his agony. His body language exudes distress. You hear him quietly saying, “Oh, I don’t know why I took on this responsibility. I’m just not up to it. I hope I can get through it.” At this point, you would probably try to shake off the sedative and bolt out of

the room! No one wants to be cut open by a surgeon who lacks confidence. That surgeon has the necessary training — but he needs to believe in his ability to perform his duty. He needs confidence to be successful. You do, too. Even when you face obstacles, confidence in God is what makes you effective. Apostle Paul gave a great example of this confidence when he wrote in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse is literally

translated as: “I am almighty in the One who continually keeps pouring His power in me.” When You Can’t, You Can Paul didn’t write these words in the airconditioned comfort of an apartment atop one of Rome’s seven hills. Paul was in prison. By today’s standards, Mamertine Prison (Paul’s prison) would be considered inhumane. Unlike modern prisons, it didn’t have peppermint-striped sheets, color television, or fitness centers.

God’s in Your Corner

The Romans had banished Paul to a dreaded dark cell. They thought these conditions were a greater punishment than death. Paul could have whined, “How can I accomplish anything here? Surely, the Lord knows that I am immobilized by my imprisonment.” Instead, despite his surroundings, Paul said, “I am almighty.” We know that the apostle could not study his beloved books and parchments. We know that Timothy could not visit him. Nevertheless, Paul spoke with joyous confidence: “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). He said, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). Compared to this, no one can justify their complaints — ever — regardless of how intolerable their circumstances are. Knockout Confidence As a child, I was small and sickly. Every bully on the playground picked on me. One day, I accompanied my cousin, Alex, down to Seymour Square to pick up groceries for his mother. As we walked home, three big guys in a pickup truck came by and shouted, “Haddad, get yourself and that @&#% Hebrew cousin of yours out of here before we mop the gutter with you.” I cringed. I thought to myself, “Uh-oh, here comes another beating.” Then I looked over at Alex, and my fears subsided. In fact, I started to smile. Alex was the AAU wrestling champion in the 175-pound division that year. At 15, he was a man. His biceps were like cannonballs, and his pectoral muscles looked like bronze marble slabs. What had converted me from terror to optimism? Simply this: Alex was near. Apostle Paul knew the source of his power, too. Sitting in prison, he knew the Lord was near. Living in that awareness changes us and extends our capabilities. It’s often the only major difference between a defeated Christian and a victorious Christian. You Can If You Continue The word “continue” comes up in the New Testament repeatedly. Continue in

“You need a fresh supply of biblical confidence every day.” God’s kindness. Continue in faith. Continue in prayer. Continue in love. Paul sensed that God was continually pouring His power into him. Many of us feel confident in the middle of a success seminar or a stirring church service. We feel safe and invincible. And who wouldn’t? But, it’s the tough times that really count. Our continuity is most important when we face obstacles. To continue, you need a fresh supply of biblical confidence every day. Hyperventilating for 30 minutes doesn’t mean you can go the next 30 minutes without breathing. Gorging yourself for a month doesn’t mean you can go the next month without eating. Continuity means pressing forward at all times. Are you aware of God’s inexhaustible supply of power? If so, are you utilizing it for success? Do you really believe that God “is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20)? Convert Your Impossibilities God does not think in terms of limitations. Our God is the God of the impossible. Jesus said, “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). So, don’t play it safe. David was the youngest and smallest of Jesse’s eight sons. Goliath stood 9 feet 6 inches tall. He mocked the Israelites and challenged them to send one of their men to fight him. King Saul stood head and shoulders above all the other Israelites, but like the rest of them, he quaked in his boots. David, however, thought Goliath could be defeated. He said, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26). His oldest brother, Eliab, angrily accused David of pride and insolence. No

one else was willing to take up Goliath’s challenge. But David trusted that God would sustain him, despite his seemingly inadequate strength. In fact, David’s recognition of his weakness was his first qualification for success. A willingness to attempt the impossible is a key ingredient in success — not because impossibilities are really possibilities in disguise, but because the God who gives us confidence has no limitations. The world says, “Know your limitations because that way you’ll be safe.” The Bible says, “Ditch the word ‘impossible’ because it chains you down.”

When it comes to products and services, our Publisher/Editorial Director (Marsha DuCille) knows how to pick them!

There’s a “tiny house” movement spreading across the United States. Swarms of people are trading highprice living for low-cost lifestyles. In some cases, individuals

have moved into homes as small as 150 square feet but (by definition) tiny homes are no larger than 1,000 square feet. To these daring souls, less stuff and less upkeep equates to more peace and more financial freedom. Home & Garden Television’s Tiny House Hunters exhibits that downsizing can lead to a simpler, yet fuller life. The show takes you coast to coast as home seekers downsize — way down. The goal is to shed the weight of unnecessary (and stressful) expenses. In fact, living large can mean living poor. An analysis conducted by the U.S. Government Accountability Office revealed that, among people aged 55 or older, nearly 29 percent had zero money saved for retirement. And among those who had a nest egg, their savings were small. Even if you prefer a more spacious abode, HGTV’s Tiny House Hunters will inspire you to make wiser financial decisions. You’ll begin to rethink how much you save, how much you waste, and how much you hoard. You’ll also awaken a new way of dreaming. Your “American Dream” will shift from big living to big savings.
