Cleveland Clinic is a leading provider of specialised medical care, internationally recognised for its doctor-led, patient-centred model of high-quality medical care. Voted amongst the top hospitals in the world by Newsweek, the Clinic is opening a new hospital at 33 Grosvenor Place, Belgravia, in 2021, preceded by the fi rst Outpatient Centre at 24 Portland Place, in the Harley Street Medical Area.
The London hospital will be Cleveland Clinic’s fi rst facility in Europe, adding another international location to a health system that includes a 165-acre main campus near downtown Cleveland, Ohio; 11 regional hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio; fi ve hospitals in Florida; a hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and facilities in Las Vegas and Toronto.
Exceptional facilities and quality of care
Cleveland Clinic has been rated the top provider of heart care in the US for 25 years in a row (US News & World Report), and also ranks in the top fi ve for gastroenterology and GI surgery, urology, rheumatology and gynaecology. Cleveland Clinic London will build on this foundation to deliver exceptional care in hi-tech facilities, where every detail is tailored to enhance the patient experience.
Cleveland Clinic London hospital will have 185 beds; eight operating rooms; imaging suite; endoscopy and catheterization labs; day-case rooms for surgery, and a neurological suite with rehabilitation. Dr Brian Donley,
CEO Cleveland Clinic London
Dr Brian Donley, CEO Cleveland Clinic London comments: “We are investing in London as it is one of the leading international healthcare centres, and represents a great opportunity to extend and improve our model of healthcare for patients. London is home to outstanding talent and world-leading research that we can learn from as we look to innovate and provide the very best care.
“We are always striving to learn and innovate, and have a strong focus on research and education, technology and leadership. Cleveland Clinic London hospital and our Outpatient Centres will be equipped with the best facilities and latest technology to enhance quality, safety and experience of care.
“We will integrate the best of Cleveland Clinic from our experience (not only in the US, but also internationally), with the best of what we learn from the UK healthcare system. This will be one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the UK. Cleveland Clinic is a global leader in specialised medical care, and our London hospital will enable patients from across the UK and beyond to access exceptional treatment that is based on nearly 100 years of research and innovation.”
Cleveland Clinic London will be at the cutting-edge of hospital design, creating an environment that reflects the needs of patients and the future of healthcare in the UK, while ensuring that the building’s environmental impact is limited. Sustainability is a priority, and the hospital will produce some of its own heat and power which, combined with ecient design, will enable a reduction in carbon emissions.
Use of cutting-edge technology will be a key dierentiator in UK private healthcare. The London hospital will be the first private provider in the UK to use electronic patient records, and the first hospital in the UK to use pharmacy barcoding and closed-loop medication administration to ensure that the patient quality, safety and care experience is exceptional.
Dr Donley continues: “We want to develop the most digitally enabled hospital in the UK. Our technology strategy aims to improve our understanding of patient information to improve care, the patient experience, and the abilities of the Caregiver.
“Technological advancements allow the patient increased access to their data and to become a partner in their own care, as well as giving our Caregivers the information they need to make the right decision for the patient. Technology plays a vital role in clinical transparency and facilitates the sharing of research and learning to bring together the best of Cleveland Clinic in both the US and the UK.”
Doctor-led and research focused – a new model for UK private healthcare
Another key dierentiator for Cleveland Clinic London is that it is led by doctors, with care delivered by groups of doctors and clinicians working as a ‘team of teams’. Combined with digital medical records and other market-leading technology, this creates a ‘Patients First’ philosophy that puts the patient perspective at the heart of decision-making. Patient safety is prioritised every step of the way to provide the best possible care journey and minimise the risk of complications in the delivery of healthcare.
Research and education are also critical to Cleveland Clinic, and the London hospital will leverage the world-leading Lerner Research Institute in Cleveland, delivering cutting-edge treatment and oering educational opportunities for Caregivers. Cleveland Clinic London will also form close ties with the UK’s clinical research institutes, to share knowledge and know-how.
Cleveland Clinic has great success in transferring ground-breaking discoveries from the laboratory to the bedside, from early breakthroughs in heart surgery to recent world firsts for face and uterus transplants. With nearly 1,400 researchers and support personnel in 180 laboratories across 12 departments, the Lerner Research Institute is one of the largest research institutes in the United States, consistently ranking in the top 10 in National Institutes of Health funding – a global benchmark of research success.
Dr Donley concludes: “Cleveland Clinic London is fully owned by Cleveland Clinic, which is a not-for-profit organisation.
We do not have shareholders, and any surplus is reinvested back into the organisation, in either healthcare services or into research and education.
“We are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved in the US and our international locations, and building this fantastic new hospital and Outpatient Centres in London is an incredibly exciting step for all 66,000 of our Caregivers around the world.
“We are building something truly dierent here – a new model of care for London, where doctors will mainly be employed by the Clinic, working to our very high clinical standards, rather than working as independent consultants. The patient’s safety and exceptional standards of care will be the key priorities of everyone along the care pathway.”
Cleveland Clinic London will welcome its first patients at the 24 Portland Place Outpatient Centre, five minutes’ walk from Oxford Circus. The hospital opens in Belgravia in 2021, and a second Outpatient Centre will follow thereafter.
