According to legend, during the Samundra Manthan (churning of the ocean) many valuable things were found. One of them was Goddess Lakshmi, who is still considered the daughter of the Ocean. She was married to Lord Vishnu on the very day that she was found. On this auspicious occasion, the entire heaven and the Earth were lit with lamps. People distributed sweets to celebrate this joyous occasion. Till this date, people celebrate this occasion with a Lakshmi Pooja at their homes during Diwali. This is a time when special sweets are prepared for the Pooja and distributed amongst near and dear ones.
