The
White Deer of Seneca County
The Seneca White Deer are a rare herd of deer living within the confines of the former Seneca Army Depot. When the 10,600-acre depot was created in 1941, a 24-mile fence was erected around its perimeter, isolating a small herd of white-tailed deer, some of whom had white coats. With the artificial protection of the fence, the wildlife inside the depot flourished. These fascinating four-legged friends can be seen grazing along the perimeter of the fence, or on scheduled, guided tours! Seneca White Deer 315.568.4112 or www.senecawhitedeer.org

Military History and the Birthplace of Memorial Day
The Sampson Museum
D
uring the fall of 1865, Henry C. Welles, a Waterloo, NY, druggist, proposed that a commemoration be held to honor the deceased soldiers of the Civil War. The following May one of the first Memorial Day celebrations in America was hosted in Waterloo. Then, 100 years later, on May 26, 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a Presidential Proclamation recognizing the town as the official Birthplace of Memorial Day.
The Memorial Day Museum in Waterloo
Seneca County thrives on a rich military history. In the 1940s and 1950s, Sampson Naval Training Station and Sampson Air Force Base were temporary homes to over 400,000 US soldiers. The adjacent former Seneca Army Depot occupied 10,587 acres between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. The property was used as a munitions storage and disposal facility by the United States Army from 1941 until the 1990s. Today, visitors can learn more about these historic facilities at Sampson State Park and the Sampson Military Museum, both located on the former grounds of these properties. 17
