Camaraderie on the water conquers cancer “

Heart & Soul Dragon Boat Club welcomes everyone for paddling fun, true teamwork

It’s a sight to behold as the beautiful and colorful purple and green fiberglass dragon boats glide through the water powered by 20 paddlers working in perfect synchronization on the Banana River at the south end of Merritt Island.

Catching a glimpse of them passing under the low-level and swing Mathers Bridge or going through the Grand Canal is a relishing sight. Dolphins often are seen swimming alongside the boats.

The paddlers are members of the Heart & Soul Dragon Boat Club of Brevard County. The club was founded in 2014 by Beth Gitlin, a breast cancer survivor and Satellite Beach resident. The club has 93 members composed of both cancer survivors and supporters, men and women, ranging in age from 18 to 80. The oldest paddler is 80, boasting five years as a club member.

Dragon boating for breast cancer survivors is an international movement inspired by the research of Canadian sports medicine specialist Don McKenzie in 1996. His research results showed that the women in his study reported better physical and mental health through this team-building exercise and a shared camaraderie with each other. The club welcomes water-sports enthusiasts, who seek to maintain health and fitness as part of a team. Dragon boating, one of the fastestgrowing sports in the world, is an ancient Chinese activity.

ANCIENT HISTORY

Dragon boating has ancient Chinese origins dating back 2,000 years. Scholars think it began as a way to worship the dragon god. Chinese dragons are strongly associated with moving water, the most powerful force in nature.

The Heart & Soul Dragon Boat Team practices in two 40-foot dragon boats on the waters from February to the middle of December. The club takes a break during the scorching months of July and August.

Club members practice three times a week. Practices accommodate members who still work. Workouts of 75 minutes begin at 6:30 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday. Saturday’s high-intensity workout of 60 minutes begins at 8 a.m.

Members meet at the pavilion at Oars and Paddles Park at 1329 Banana River Drive in Indian Harbour Beach. A land warmup is conducted at the beginning of each practice before entering the water. The boats are cleaned after each workout.

Heart & Soul Dragon Boat Club members compete against other Florida clubs, as well as out-of-state

teams. The races vary in length from 500 to 2,000 meters. Boats are provided at the venues. An upcoming April event will be held in Inverness.

The Heart & Soul Dragon Boat Club in Indian Harbour Beach owns three dragon boats. Two 40-foot boats carry 20 paddlers, sitting two side by side. A person at the rear of the boat stands up and steers, while another (drummer) at the front tries to keep the pace for the crew. The drum is used to keep rhythm and timing.

The two large boats weigh 600 pounds. The long and narrow shape with a flat bottom and rolling prow and stern is designed for speed. The club’s third boat is 30-feet long and it seats 10 paddlers.

Paddlers use a rotating motion, with their torsos and hips gaining traction by pushing off with their feet.

Club member Arnie Cantor, who is in his 70s and has a bad knee, likes the low-impact nature of the sport.

“Eventually, I will need to have a knee replacement,’’ Cantor said “But, in the meantime, I am very comfortable participating in the dragon boat sport,” he said.

In her 60s, Cantor’s girlfriend Carman Lang has arthritis. It doesn’t bother her in the boat.

“You learn so much about yourself mentally, physically and socially,” said Lang, who lives with Cantor in Viera East. “We both have a love of the water and find it so enjoyable.”

Carman found out about the Dragon Boat Club from literature at her workplace at Health First. Health First Cancer Institute has been the major sponsor of the club for the past six years.

The Heart & Soul Dragon Boat Club is a nonprofit with the mission of

promoting breast cancer awareness and to engage all members in living each moment fully through the fun and camaraderie of dragon boating. The mission encourages the development and support for dragon boat racing in Brevard County and the state of Florida.

“Racing and competing are so much fun,” said Roxanne Leavitt, a club member for the past nine years, who enjoys the rapport she shares with club members.

Jenny Lyons of Cocoa Beach joined the club in 2018 after becoming an empty nester. In 2021, at 57, she earned a spot on Team USA for the International Dragon Boat World Championships in Hong Kong. COVID-19 canceled the event.

“Of course I was disappointed,’’ Lyons said. “Having worked so hard to achieve the honor to compete on that level. But, I am now, at age 59, working hard to make the USA Team once more.

And, if I do, I will be able to compete in Thailand this August.”

Lyons works at the Kennedy Space Center on the Artemis program in deep space logistics. Ironically, her work involves using a derivative of the Dragon Capsule.

“This has been the most consummate team sport out of all sports I have done in my boomer years,” Lyons said.

Carol Berry, the club’s outgoing president and a board member for the past six years, praised the City of Indian Harbour Beach, which operates Oars and Paddles Park.

“We try to give back by supporting Keep Brevard Beautiful with trash cleanups, supporting (Indian River Lagoon) projects and participating as a club in the Spring into Fitness challenge to name a few,” Berry said. “Giving back to the club and to the community is part of our mission.”

The club sponsors a free introduction to paddling session twice a year in the spring and fall. People who are “bitten by the dragon” are able to sign up for the Connect Program, which provides the opportunity to try it out for five weeks on Sunday afternoons for $50. After that, they are invited to join the club.

“At the end of March, we are sponsoring a week-long camp/clinic for paddlers who want more condensed instruction from an internationally ranked coach,” Barry said.

Newcomers could find themselves a part of the dragon boat team in 2024, which according to the Chinese Zodiac is the Year of the Dragon.

Beat the heat with cool places

Brevard County has plenty of fun, inexpensive or free things to do while beating the Florida heat. There are many fun and leisurely things to do on the Space Coast without having to shell out hard-earned cash. In fact, there are places, museums and venues to go where air conditioning makes it a lot more comfortable.

BARRIER ISLAND CENTER

Experience and learn about the Barrier Island Sanctuary ecosystem at the center. Among the many other things to experience at the BIC are guided tours for sea turtle nesting sites organized by the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC), which has partnered with Brevard County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands Program. The center is the biggest summer nesting habitat of several species of marine turtles in the U.S.

“We have school groups, eco-egg hunts, dune lagoon mile hikes and it’s a great place for kids and families to enjoy the day,” said Joy Winet, the Education Center Coordinator.

Located in the Archie Carr National Refuge, the 34-acre

sanctuary is the perfect setting to explore the island’s natural habitat through interactive exhibits, nature trails and yearly festivals.

BREVARD VETERANS MEMORIAL CENTER AND MUSEUM

With an impressive array of war memorabilia, artifacts and a military library with more than 5,000 books, the VMC is dedicated to serving veterans. The museum and park are open to the public.

There’s a massive Wall of Honor that greets everyone upon arrival, naming those lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

“We’ve added a Korean War tank, an A-7 aircraft and there’s a nuclear sub periscope built into the ceiling for kids to look through,” said Dean Schaaf, the president of the VMC.

FLORIDA SURF MUSEUM

If you’re into surfing, you won’t want to miss this gem exhibiting the best in surfing history since 1999.

It chronicles Florida’s unique surfing heritage and its surfing community culture on the East Coast.

“When we started, our space was so small we couldn’t even turn a longboard around. Then, we started receiving memorabilia and we had to expand. It’s a great place for adults who are into surfing and kids that are just starting the sport,” said John Hughes, the executive director of FSM.

The FSM actively engages with the community through events, exhibits and outreach programs. There’s a auggested donation of $2 a person. The museum is located at 4275 N. Atlantic Ave. in Cocoa Beach next to Ron Jon Surf Shop. For information, go to floridasurfmuseum.org

SANDS SPACE HISTORY CENTER

It’s the perfect outing for anyone, young and old, who love anything space related.

Since 1966, the museum at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station has focused on the timeline of Cape Canaveral’s launch capabilities and the spirit of space exploration. A lot of the volunteers that provide guided tours are pioneers of the space program, rocketry, missiles and space flight.

The museum displays missiles, rockets and space flight memorabilia to provide a solid history of U.S. space travel. The museum is located just outside the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 100 Spaceport Way, Building 90328 and is open to the public free of charge. The Center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. It is closed on Monday. For information, go to ccspacemuseum.org

A resident of Cocoa Beach and a Florida native, Mutter has been collecting shark teeth for five years. Her hobby came about unexpectedly.

“Being a Florida native, the beach is naturally in your blood. I collected shells for years and any type of oddity that was washed ashore. I visited my sister and brother-in-law on the West Coast, and we went to Manasota Key. That’s where I found many shark teeth and that’s how I started collecting them,” Mutter said.

Searching for shark teeth may sound like an unusual hobby, but for Mutter it’s fascinating. Sharks constantly grow their chompers throughout their life and growing new ones means shedding the old ones. A single shark can have as many as 35,000 teeth in a lifetime — which makes for a lot of teeth with hundreds washing ashore on beaches all over the world.

“There are no teeth to be found here in Cocoa Beach and, to make it worthwhile, you have to go to West Coast beaches to dig for them when there’s no red tide,’’ Mutter said. “After a whole day of bending over and searching miles of beach doing the shark-tooth stoop, you’re pretty tired and your back is shot. But, I love it!”

“Folks think of many ways to display their shark teeth collection, from creating resin boards as wall art to making photo frames and key fobs. All types of crafty stuff. I just keep mine in vintage jars for display.”

Mutter earned a master’s degree in library science and worked at both Kennedy Space Center and Patrick Space Force Base technical libraries for many years. After retiring, she wanted to give back to the community and looked for worthwhile causes to volunteer her time.

“I’ve been going to the Highland Fellowship in Eau Gallie for three years, and it’s been so rewarding. I also sell T-shirts for the Kidney Foundation.”

Full of energy with a bright, sunny personality, Mutter always has a smile for others. She loves thrift shopping and collecting anything unusual and quirky. Her décor at home is mid-century modern with some rattan furniture.

Mutter adores her cats — one is blind and all have different personalities.

“Of course, having been a librarian, reading is another love of mine,’’ Mutter said. “I walk a lot going thrifting; that’s where I find most of my treasures. I also spend many hours in my garden, but my bromeliads this year are being stubborn as they’re not blooming yet. Plants, no matter how much love you give them, have a mind of their own.”

Lighthouse stands tall as important link to historical past

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, the only lighthouse owned and operated by the U.S. Space Force, has stood as a guide for mariners along the Space Coast for more than 150 years.

Its light shines 22 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean as it protects passing ships from dangerous shoals.

“This is the second lighthouse at the Cape,” said Ron Ecker, the president of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation and member of both the Florida Lighthouse Association.

“The first lighthouse, built

in 1848, was 60-feet high and the light showed for 10 miles into the ocean. Then they discovered there were dangerous shoals farther out. So, in 1858, a cast iron lighthouse was built in New York State. But production stopped when the Civil War started because the company had to build cannons. Construction began again on the lighthouse after the war. Assembly was completed in 1868 and it stood a few yards from the original. For a while, two lighthouses were on the Cape.”

The government decided to move the lighthouse to the point of the older beacon, and it proceeded

to demolish the original lighthouse. Then, it used the original concrete and foundation to relocate the new lighthouse about a mile farther inland, where it is now, according to Ecker. “It took months to reassemble and get the light lighted,” he said. “To put the lighthouse back together, every piece inside was numbered in Roman numerals and outside pieces marked in Arabic numbers. Still standing where it was placed in July 1884, the light was automated in 1933 with two modern optic lenses now used.”

In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard took over all lighthouses. After World War

II, (1947 or 1948) the Cape Canaveral site received 900 acres of land from the lighthouse to the ocean since the U.S. government was looking for a place to launch rockets.

Hangar C, right next to the lighthouse, was where the German rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun prepared to launch rockets after the war, viewing the rocket launches from the lighthouse. Built in 1953, it is the oldest structure of its kind on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. It has exhibits of the United States’ early rocket and space programs to include restored launch systems — early missiles, ballistic

missiles and capsules. Two communities — one called DeSoto — existed on the Cape in the 1950s, Ecker said. Every time there was a rocket launch, the government moved the residents to the hotel on the coast. The communities, including a school, originally were built in and around lighthouse keepers’ cottages. In 1967, the cottages were destroyed.

In 2000, the Coast Guard turned the lighthouse over to the U.S. Air Force (later the Space Force), making it the only operational lighthouse owned by the U.S. Space Force.

The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation, formed to help preserve the light, built the lighthouse the first keepers’ cottages museum at the lighthouse. The group has an ongoing fundraising effort through

which anyone can purchase a brick for the walkway surrounding the lighthouse. The brick, at a cost of $150 each with five characters per line of inscription, can be used to memorialize or honor someone.

Individual and small group 4-hour tours of the lighthouse area and historic spaceflight sites are offered by Canaveral Tours. Also available are shorter lighthouse and Hangar C tours offered occasionally. For tour prices and reservations, call 321-4533994 at least 48 hours prior to the tour date.

Black Point Wildlife Drive

Black Point Wildlife Drive, Titusville

From Interstate 95 take exit 220, follow to State Road 406 east for eight miles across the Max Brewer Bridge. Stay left where the road splits and watch for the signs to the entrance.

It is a great family outing to spot birds and other wildlife in their natural coastal habitat while slowly cruising the sevenmile drive by car. It is perfect for children, animal and nature lovers.

The homesite of early Civil Rights pioneers Harry T. and Harriette V. One of the most popular recreational sites in Brevard, it offers 3.5 miles of public beach with year-round lifeguards and a 1,200-foot fishing pier also offering fish and tackle rentals.

Described as Sebastian’s best-kept secret, this immaculate farm set in five lush acres is a petting zoo for farm animals.It is perfect for children and adults. Hamburgers and hotdogs can be purchased on weekends.

With more than 350 artifacts of pirate memorabilia and artifacts, the museum will transport you back in time to the swashbuckling buccaneer era and its pirate ships. It includes a store for purchasing gifts and historical clothing.

Treasure Coast Wildlife Center and Animal Rehab — Palm Bay

From horned owls to pythons, this wildlife center has many permanent residents where the public can get up close and personal with when they are showcased by the Educational Ambassadors. Many animals are rehabilitated after being injured and then returned to the wild.

Turkey Creek Wildlife Sanctuary 1518 Port Malabar

Founded in 1981, Turkey Creek offers almost 2 miles of boardwalk of native habitat and forests making it great for birdwatching, finding gators, manatees, walking and cycling. The Margaret Hames Nature Center offers educational programs and many nature exhibits.

Sam’s House at Pine Island Refuge —

Built in 1875, it is the oldest structure in Brevard County. It showcases exhibits of Ice Age animals, Native Americans and early pioneers. It includes six miles of trails for birdwatching, bicycling, fishing and canoeing. Tours are available.

Historic Beach Park

Juan Ponce de León Landing

The park commemorates the epic 1513 voyage of Juan Ponce de León and his landing near Melbourne Beach on April 2. Juan Ponce de León’s 7,980 nautical mile exploration into unknown waters set the stage for the subsequent European colonization of the United States. This 25.57-acre regional beach park features two beach crossovers, a small pavilion, restrooms and parking.

Brevard County strongly urges that a public shelter be used only as a last resort. You will be more comfortable sheltering with friends, family or in commercial lodging.

If you require public sheltering, please be familiar with your designated primary evacuation shelter location and your planned route to that shelter. Your shelter location may be different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BRING THE FOLLOWING TO THE SHELTER:

1. Enough food and supplies to last several days, including special diet foods, since food might not be readily available at the shelter.

2. Bottled water (two quarts/person/day) and other beverages.

3. A manual can opener, eating utensils, paper plates, cups and napkins/paper towels.

4. Infant formula/food/diapers and wipes.

5. Two-week supply of medications and First-aid kit.

6. Cash or traveler’s checks.

7. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and folding chairs. Bedding is not provided in public shelters.

8. Personal hygiene items and changes of clothing.

9. Flashlight, battery-powered radio/TV and spare batteries, cards, games, books and toys.

10. Include items that can help protect you and others from COVID-19, such as hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, bar or liquid soap, disinfectant wipes (if available) and two masks for each person.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION SHELTERS

Shelter openings are incident-specific

Never go to a shelter unless local officials have announced it is open. Shelter openings will be announced through local television, radio stations, social media and the Brevard County Emergency Management website.

Shelters are designed to house residents of the barrier islands (including Merritt Island), those in low-lying or flood-prone areas, those in mobile/manufactured homes, or those with no other sheltering options.

If you choose to go to a shelter, follow these instructions:

• Stay as calm as possible and take your disaster supply kit.

• Bring your own cots or sleeping materials.

• Bring changes of clothing and wear sturdy shoes.

• If you have dietary restrictions, bring food that you will be able to eat.

• Practice social distancing. Stay at least 6 feet from other people outside of your household.

• Follow CDC COVID-19 preventive actions — wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and follow shelter policies for wearing masks.

• Bring what you need to stay comfortable and entertained.

• Not all shelters will have electricity throughout the emergency.

• Shelter Rules — If staying in a shelter, be aware of the shelter rules:

• We are guests. Please treat the facility, equipment and staff respectfully.

• No disorderly or disruptive behavior will be allowed.

• No smoking, alcohol or drugs allowed.

• No guns or weapons of any kind permitted.

• You must sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave. Other shelters are available and are opened once the primary shelter has reached 85 percent occupancy rate.

SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTER:

The Special Needs Registry is a confidential listing of those people who meet program criteria and is updated on an annual basis. Patients with colostomy assistance needs, nebulizers, oxygen, feeding tubes or Alzheimer’s disease are examples of medical criteria that are eligible for the registry.

Individuals who elect to use a Special Needs or other public shelter should bring with them items such as cots, bedding, medicine, medical supplies and food supplies, preparing to be self-sufficient for 72 hours. Special Needs registrants should also be accompanied by at least one caregiver. Occupants’ comfort will be determined by their preparedness.

Caregiver Resource Center:

The Sunflower House offers education, exercise and support programs for caregivers. Donated medical equipment and supplies are available.

Home safety:

The Senior Assistance Program provides environmental modifications to improve accessibility, safety and security for the home. Backgroundchecked handymen will install grab bars, build access ramps and perform other safety-related services. The cost varies.

In-home care:

Licensed healthcare workers provide personal care, homemaking, respite care and case management. For an assessment, call 321-806-3802.

Meals on Wheels:

Trained volunteers deliver meals and offer a safety check. Call for an appointment.

RSVP:

Retired & Senior Volunteer Program: There are volunteer opportunities for people 55 and older

throughout Brevard County. Training, orientation and supplemental insurance is offered.

Seniors at Lunch:

Bus transportation is provided to many locations throughout the county for adults, 60 and older, who gather for dining. Hot meals and activities are offered. Call to RSVP.

Transportation:

Seniors At Lunch is held at nutrition centers within the North, Central, and South areas of Brevard County every weekday and provides hot meals and activities for seniors, who are 60 years and older. How to register to vote

To register, the Florida Voter Registration Application Form must be completed. This form, which is also used to notify the Elections Office of a change in your name, address, party affiliation or to update a signature, can be found online and at locations listed below, or you may request that an application be mailed. VOTING MAIL/ABSENTEE BALLOT

Any registered voter may vote by mail. Mail/Absentee ballot requests may be in person, by regular mail, e-mail or by phone to the Supervisor of Elections. All requests must be received no later than 5 p.m. the sixth day before the election, and ballots must be received at the Election Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day to be eligible to be counted.

EARLY VOTING

Prior to election day early voting for federal or state races is available at all Supervisor of Elections offices and, at the Supervisor’s discretion, at certain other locations, beginning 10 days before Election Day and running through the third day before the election. Identification requirements for early voting are the same as for voting on Election Day. Florida law requires each voter to present an unexpired form of identification containing the voter’s name and photograph. If the identification does not also contain the voter’s signature, additional identification containing that signature is required.

REFERENDUMS

A referendum may be called at any time on any issue that requires a vote of the people. All voters may vote regardless of party affiliation.

POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION

Florida is a closed primary state. If you want to vote in a partisan Primary Election, then you must be a registered voter with the political party for which the primary election is held. All registered voters may vote on issues, amendments and for non-partisan candidates such as: judges, school board and city council members, regardless of party affiliation. Political party changes can be requested no later than 29 days before the election through the election offices.

There’s a lot of talk in the media about the debt limit, inflation, Social Security and Medicare. I’d like to take a minute to clear that air about these important issues.

There are NO current proposals or plans being considered in the Congress that would harm current or future Social Security or Medicare beneficiaries. My position always has been, and remains the same: to Medicare or Social Security for those in or near retirement. These are earned benefits and the federal government is obligated to pay them

Truthfully, what is really hurting seniors and those on fixed incomes is the record high inflation caused by decades of failed Washington economic policies.

Prices have gone up for everything - food, gas, electricity, and services. These increases have cost the average American family, as well as retirees, thousands of dollars more per year just for the basics of life. Consider that a monthly Social Security benefit of $1,666 today has the same purchasing power of a $1,224 monthly benefit from 2010, a loss of $441 or a 26% decrease in value.

I am working to end this high inflation and protect the integrity of Social Security and Medicare for seniors by addressing the root of the problem: reckless spending and an out-of-control national debt.

It took the United States 235 years to accumulate the first $15 trillion of our $31 trillion national debt. Yet it took only 11 years to accumulate the second $15 trillion. It is fiscally irresponsible to continue to add to the debt as though the bill will never come due. The lack of budget restraint threatens the solvency of every part of our budget, and, according to the actuaries for Medicare and Social Security, may threaten those programs’ ability to pay full benefits.

Washington’s insatiable appetite to overspend is its biggest problem. Our government is collecting record tax revenue even during an economic downturn. According to the Department of the Treasury over the past three years, tax revenue has increased nearly 26%. Spending however, has increased by more than 40%. If we are to get our debt and deficit under control, we cannot do it without restraining government spending.

As we debate this matter in the coming weeks and months, please know that I stand firm in my commitment to protect Social Security and Medicare while working to curb spending in other areas of the federal budget so we can better protect our nation from bankruptcy.
