Suntree-Viera Pet Rescue finds homes for furry friends BY GEORGE WHITE

VOLUME 3 ISSUE 12

Jennifer Crumley of Suntree wanted a puppy for her children, 10-year-old Trey and 11-year-old Grace. So she turned to SuntreeViera Pet Rescue and got four-month-old Ted, an excitable yet loveable member of the household. Grace Crumley volunteers every weekend for the organization by helping at Petco, where a selection of adoptable dogs and cats are brought for the public to view. “We don’t really have a facility so we can’t take them all in. The beneit of people bringing their unwanted animal to us is that we are a nokill shelter. If we get it, we keep it in a foster home until it’s adopted,’’ said pet rescue president Melinda Buschor. Since the rescue’s opening in 2004, more than 8,000 pets have been saved, including all breeds of dogs and cats and even the occasional pet rabbit, she said. Potential adoptees must complete an adoption application and be approved. Minimum adoption fees are $85 and up for cats and $150 to $300 for dogs. All animals are vet checked, Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Orlando, FL Permit No. 1979

spayed/neutered, current on age-appropriate vaccines and free of internal and external parasites. Cats are tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS and dogs eight months and older are tested for heartworm. Pet rescue volunteers have animals on display from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at Petco in Viera and from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the Adoption Center (next to the grooming area) of PetSmart in Melbourne on Evans VIERA VOICE George White Road and U.S. 192. Letter from the

EDITOR

On behalf of the entire staff of VIERA VOICE, I wish you a joyous and prosperous new year! To say goodbye to 2010, I’d like to relect on some of my most cherished memories from the year. In August, after an inspiring interview with Bill Klein from TLC’s The Little Couple, I grabbed a blanket, headed to the beach and

waited for the night sky. The Perseid meteor shower was at its peak that night, and I watched as beautiful debris streamed above me. If you’ve never witnessed a meteor shower before, you should put it on your to-do list for 2011. That night is one I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I will also carry with me the sense of pride I felt while rooting for the United States during the FIFA World Cup. At irst, my friends

had to heavily persuade me to take part in watching the festivities. Once I was standing side by side with other Americans, though, I was overwhelmed with an indescribable feeling of togetherness. At the end of 2010, I was able to watch the GFWC Sunshine Juniorettes give Christmas gifts to girls at a Devereux group home. One of the girls told her counselor that it was “the best Christmas she ever had.”

Nominate a children’s hero SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Videographer Jack Samson

Sales JLynn Dave Francis Dana King Jan Quiles

Witnessing compassionate moments such as this makes my job so worthwhile. Throughout 2010, VIERA VOICE covered several stories about food, toy and coat drives and other fundraisers. The theme I’ve noticed is that our community is a generous one that steps up to helps others in need. While it’s hard to say goodbye to a memorable year that seemed to pass so quickly, I welcome 2011 and a new decade, which I know will bring many more wonderful events. I hope you won’t let this year pass without making some cherished memories of your own.

COMMUNITY

Youths in the community learn the importance of serving others BY ANGELA SMITH

Collecting shoes was their irst project — and they did so, collecting over 1,000 pairs. Their second project was to assist a local program’s toy drive in which they succeeded overwhelmingly. Who’s behind these acts of community kindness? A group of about 40 teens and children, who gather each month looking for ways to serve people within the community and others around the world, hoping to touch as many people as possible. Nerve2Serve, a two-monthold community service organization in Viera, began as a program speciically designed to strive and nurture a Christ-like humanity and sense of civic-mindedness in today’s teens and preadoles-

cent children. “My husband and I had this idea about two years ago and we have been sitting on it,” said Paula McCabe, Nerve2Serve coordinator. “We were noticing in our area of Viera and Suntree that we’re extremely privileged and very blessed to have what we have…and we said we really don’t want our kids to be under the impression that life is so easy and that everything comes so easy. We wanted them to know that there are people out there that are having a harder time and there are a lot of things we can do about it.” At the group’s irst meeting in October, the members of Nerve2Serve decided their irst project would be collect-

ing shoes for Soles4Souls, a national charity that collects shoes and distributes them to people in need. “That evening I was on Facebook, and I saw several of the kids sending out a notice saying, ‘Hey if anyone has any shoes we have a good place to send them where people really need them’,” McCabe said. “I was so blown away. I was like, ‘look at these guys.’ It was unbelievable.” The organization collected 1,043 pairs of new and gently used shoes in one month. As November rolled around, McCabe and the group set out to prepare for their second community service project, partnering with Christ on Campus, a local after-school program, to put on a Toys for

“They can take something like just collecting shoes for example, where there’s not really a lot of zest and appeal, but when you put a group of kids together they make it so much fun.” For more information on Nerve2Serve, visit www. nerve2serve.com, or contact Paula McCabe at 321-6262627 or at pmccabe@nerve2serve.com. Watersong member Pat Hemphill took home top honors in the Brevard County Art Museum’s Go Green Campaign with her winning piece, created by assembling torn fragments of pictures from magazines. because it was a smaller piece, about 18 inches by 24 inches, and I usually do watercolors. This is the irst time I’ve tried this,’’ said Hemphill, who lives in the Watersong independent living community in Viera. The winning entry depicted a little boy snorkeling under the title The Diver’s Dream. “I was excited because it’s a traveling show that will go to different places all around the county and I think next it goes to Florida Tech in Melbourne,’’ she said. Also sponsored by the Strawbridge Art League, the Go Green competition had three categories including Florida Wildlife: from ish to feathers; Our Green Earth: from lagoon to estuary; and the category Hemphill won, Use It Up: recycle it. For her winning entry, Hemphill was awarded a certiicate, a ribbon and a check

for $500, she said. Several Watersong members traveled to the Art Museum to support Hemphill as she accepted her prize, said Katie Huffstetler, director of public relations for senior living communities including Watersong. The Strawbridge Art League, Inc. was founded more than 10 years ago by a small, dedicated group of artists intent on bringing to the Space Coast a limited version of a similar program in Alexandria, Va. Artists practice their chosen ield by exhibiting inished works for sale, creating their art or both. The organization has now grown to more than 200 members with regular exhibits held within the walls of Henegar Center for the Arts in historic downtown Melbourne. VV

Viera couple documents three-year sail around the world BY KEN PREVITI

Jeanne and Jim Kenaston will never wonder what it would be like to stop everything and sail around the world. The Viera couple did it for three years. Jeanne recently wrote the two-volume book, On Sabbatical, describing the glories, adventures and misadventures of the jour-

ney that included stays in California, Mexico, Tahiti (French Polynesia), New Zealand, Australia, Bali (Indonesia), South Africa, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. The book’s title is derived from the name of the Kenastons’ 32-foot boat, Sabbatical. Setting sail in 1979 from Seattle was the

beginning of the resplendent adventure. Yet, merely 18 months ago the petty task of digitalizing the hundreds of photos they had taken sparked the urge to record the adventure for their family members and friends to share. The publishing of 300 pages in two volumes accompanied by 500 color

The harrowing storms, buoyant adventures, picturesque landscapes in exotic lands and ebullient encounters with colorful people are drawn from the vivid memories etched in their minds and hearts. The exhausting work of two people who shared the daily tasks of sailing and living on a small boat were real enough, but the sheer radiance of adventure dominates both volumes. Jeanne’s writing is clear and clever and makes for a wonderful read. She reveals the facts of sailing in 1980 with the use of a sextant for celestial navigation and a ham radio for communication; these details are rather stark re-

Elementary students gather to give toys BY AngElA SmIth

On a cold December morning, children waited in a winding line at Viera Regional Park – not to play a soccer or football game, but for the chance to individually donate an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots program. Pastor Mark Moreno of Hope Lutheran Church in

Melbourne organized the toy drive, which was held during the first weekend of December. Children from three Suntree and Viera elementary schools gathered as part of Moreno’s Christ on Campus program, an after-school group that meets monthly to play games and FREE Glass of House Wine with any of our Nightly Chef Specials!

Moreno, who’s also a Navy chaplain and a Marine Reservist, knows the needs some families have during the holiday season. He set out to help the Toys for Tots program while also teaching the importance of giving back. “For kids and parents this is an opportunity to help the less fortunate and to teach their children about caring for other people, which is an important part of their life and faith and an important part of a community,” Moreno said. “Getting exposed to events like this will help shape a compassionate adult.” The two-hour event included flag football, potatosack and egg and spoon races and a table for children to make cards for deployed service men. More than 100 students and parents from Ralph Williams Elementary, Suntree Elementary and Quest Elementary attended, giving each child the opportunity to meet other Christ

After a successful presentation in 2009, DRUMLine Live marches back onto the King Center’s 6,000-square-foot stage on Friday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. “The last time we presented DRUMLine it was extremely well-received, and we have brought the show back by popular demand,” said Nance Burroughs, marketing director for the King Center. “In the past, the audience was wildly enthusiastic and we expect the same for this year’s show.” Musicians, singers and steppers will alternate between full-band numbers, stunts and antics through drum lines, while also using their skills to create the sounds of Motown, hip hop, R&B, gospel, and swing – igniting spectators to join in and get loud. “We get the audience involved because we bring the band out into the audience so they become a part of the show,” said Reggie Brayon, producer of DRUMLine. “We actually end the show with a New Orleans-style parade into the lobby.” Before the show comes to a close, cast members will also perform a tribute to the late Michael Jackson and other notable stars overall making the entire show a college halftime stadium experience while in the show-style marching band tradition. “This show appeals to all ages. It is especially popular with students involved in school marching bands,” Burroughs said. “Anyone who enjoys marching bands will delight in this show. It is perfect for families.” Tickets are available at the King Center ticket office by phone at 321-242-2219 or online at kingcenter.com.

ship,” according to USFirst. org. “The goal is to inspire children to want to go into science and technology,” said Marion Passmore, a math teacher at Rockledge High School. Activities include mentoring the Lego League, a younger version of FIRST for students ages 7 to 14, and holding tournaments throughout Brevard County. “We do all of our fundraising in the fall and the kids do a community service project too. This year, the kids did a beach bash, cleaning up the beach at SR 520 for a couple of weekends,” Passmore said. On January 8, teams from around the world will know this year’s theme. The Pink Team plans on having its kickoff at NASA, the team’s sponsor. About one-third of the team builds the robot under the watchful eye of NASA engineers and machinists.

The students have six weeks to inish the robot. The remainder of the students work on other aspects of the competition, such as creating a web page, public relations, making a documentary, or designing t-shirts for the team. The irst competition— with about 60 other teams— is March 10 to 12 at the University of Central Florida. “The competition is crazy,” Passmore said. “When we go to the competition on Thursday, it’s like NASCAR. You get your robot inspected and get some practice time on the ield. Friday and Saturday are the actual days of competition.” This year, the world championship will take place in St. Louis, MO. “It’s an all-around competition,” added Passmore. “The kids learn teamwork, science, and public speaking skills.” VV

One night at Suntree Elementary sparks an interest in science

Viera Regional Community Center

BY DARRELL WOEHLER

Though the word “science” may mean the study of nature and the universe, science meant fun for Suntree Elementary students who attended the Science Night on Thursday, Dec. 2. Stations were set up throughout the school to pack what seemed like a month’s worth of learning into one unforgettable evening. Two members of the Orlando Science Center pro-

vided the grand inale — a high-tech “Kaboom” with rocket fuel igniting, balloons shrinking and exploding and various other noisy experiments. This was Suntree Elementary’s irst Science Night, instituted by school principal Mecheall Giombetti, who brought the idea with her from Endeavour Elementary School in Cocoa. She developed Science Night to increase student involvement in the sciences and to give parents and other family members a chance to participate in their students’ learning processes. Wilson out to make the most of her senior year BY CARL KOTALA

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

K.K. Wilson is determined to make the most of her senior basketball season at Viera High. “I’m so determined,” the 5-foot-7 guard said. “I’m excited every game. It doesn’t matter who we play, I come focused.” First-year Hawks coach Jamie Risberg is inding out just how valuable Wilson can be, both as a player and as a leader. “She’s a really good athlete, (she has) explosive offensive moves,”

Viera High senior guard K.K. Wilson can hit from a long distance, but her favorite move is a crossover dribble and drive to the basket.

Risberg said. “She sees the loor really well. She can really be the heart and soul of this team when she’s up and she’s smiling … it’s infectious, her spirit and her enthusiasm.” Though she can pop outside and hit a 3-pointer, Wilson’s signature move is the crossover drive to the basket and with a little luck, a chance at a three-point play, the old-fashioned way. “I’m pretty balanced,” she grinned. “I like to drive in and get the foul call.” However, while Wilson can be an offensive threat, it’s been her defense that’s gotten the most work over the offseason. The senior said she worked to do a better job of moving her feet, covering help side and running through screens. “She does a good job. I’d like to see her do a great job,” Risberg said. “I know she’s capable of doing a great job because of her quickness and athleticism.” Because the Hawks don’t have a lot of height -- their tallest player is 5-8 -- their best bet is to play up-tempo and hope they can get their Continued on page 25

Hawks basketball player sets out to make history BY CARL KOTALA

If all goes according to plan, Corbin Jackson will accomplish something no other Viera High boys basketball player has ever done. The senior forward is poised to become the school’s irst 1,000point scorer sometime this month. “I’m deinitely excited for it,” the 6-foot7, 192-pound senior forward said. Jackson was averaging 19 points and 9.7 VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala points midway through Viera High senior Corbin Jackson is December. That comes expected to become the first 1,000on the heels of a junior point scorer in school history this season in which he led month. Though he wants to decide by the end of the season, he’s not in a rush right now. “As a team captain, I don’t feel like it would be fair to the rest of my guys to just focus on my individual accolades and achievements,” Jackson said. “I want to get the team rolling before I really start to think about colleges.” Becoming the irst player in school history to score 1,000 points is important to Jackson, who was considering a transfer prior to this season. He’s still a Hawk. And soon he’ll make history. “It means a lot,” he said. “I was actually faced with the decision this year to go to a different school and Coach Cook was a lot of the reason I came back. (That) and because I felt like I wanted to be here. This is my legacy. This is where I want to graduate from. It means a lot to me to be able to make a irst like that at the school.” VV

After years of paperwork and many trips to the VA clinic in Viera, Dugan received the approval for his much-awaited back surgery – thanks to the Veteran’s Association- clearing him of the challenges he used to face. “I was dealing with the pain on a day-to-day basis, which was very depressing and it hindered a lot of things I did, like driving out to gyms and going to events,” Dugan said. “I’ll be able to increase by 110 percent because I can be out there longer, standing longer and driving longer.” His recovery from his November back surgery is going well, and he’s even taken on a new project collecting blankets and monetary donations to give to the VA clinic in Viera for homeless veterans during this winter season. He hopes to collect at least 1,000 blankets by the beginning of January. “I have a real soft spot for veterans, as I’m a veteran myself,” Dugan said. “I know there are about 1,000 homeless veterans just in the Brevard County area, and I know they don’t always get the help they need and what they need. The least we can do is try to help.” For more information, contact Jeremy Dugan at jd@rukusightgear.com. VV

Wesche Jewelers served as host for An Affair to Remember, the fundraising event held Dec. 11 for the beneit of the nonproit Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. The event was a combination of live art auction, silent art auction and jewelry rafle as cocktails and hors d’oevres were served. Beautiful jewels, beautiful art and beautiful people coalesced for enjoyment with a purpose. Holly Wesche, owner of Wesche Jewelers, said, “We have never before hosted an event for the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, and we are proud to do it.”

A portion of the night’s jewelry sales was also contributed to the organization. More than 25 talented artists graciously contributed their creations for the two auctions. Gentiva, Visiting Angels, Glenbrooke at Palm Bay, Home Instead Senior Care, Carnegie Gardens, Brookdale Senior Living and Omni Home Care united in generosity to act as sponsors and donors for the event. Make injury prevention part of your game plan. Playing sports is a great way to stay in shape. But with all physical activity, injuries can occur. Being aware and prepared is the best way to prevent sports-related injuries, which is why Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Kohl’s teamed up to create Play It Forward, a sports medicine education and injury prevention program. From teaching kids, coaches and parents about sports safety, to providing information, tips and other free resources, the Play It Forward program helps Central Florida’s young athletes stay healthy and in the game. Teresa “T” Kline

Carolyn “Lee” Thompson Words to live by “If you can dream it, you can do it.” –Walt Disney

Carolyn “Lee” Thompson is a person who pursues her dreams. After serving as the chief of the Small Business Ofice at Patrick Air Force Base for 30 years, she wished to volunteer. She has since been the president of GFWC Viera Woman’s Club, advisor to the GFWC Sunshine Juniorettes and president of United Methodist Women. She has also been involved in the Red Hat Angels and Rolling Readers. Thompson holds a love for Disney World, and since she always dreamed of working there, she recently did just that and obtained a part-time job working at the Grand Floridian and various other positions. She is happy to be behind-the-scenes and witnessing the magic of one of her favorite places, and watching other dreams come true, too. What are your three all-time favorite TV shows? I Love Lucy, The Price is Right and The Amazing Race.

Teresa “T” Kline retired from the Air Force as a captain after serving for 22 years. Now, she passionately gives her time and talent as chairwoman for Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build, a group comprised of women who build houses from the ground up. Though she enjoys rooing when it comes to the building aspect of Women Build, Kline loves witnessing the sense of empowerment women feel once they have accomplished building a home. Through Habitat for Humanity and Women Build, Kline has helped to build 22 houses for less-fortunate Brevard County residents. Aliona Groh, a member of Women Build, said, “T is indeed an extraordinary person who makes a huge difference in many people’s lives, including mine.” What can always be found in your freezer? Ice cream.

What is your favorite indulgence? Spending time at Disney parks.

What are your three all-time favorite TV shows? The Closure, Glee and Cagney & Lacy.

Sharpes family thanks Habitat for Humanity volunteers and local businesses for new home BY GEORGE WHITE

VIERA VOICE George White

Entering their Sharpes home for the first time are, from left, Tatum Hagans, Michele Hagans and Jocelyn Hagans on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010. The contrast between old and new at Michelle Hagan’s home in Sharpes is like the difference between night and day, thanks to volunteers working with Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County. Hagans, who had been with the program since 2002,

and her children Tatum and Jocelyn, inally got the keys to their brand new home Dec. 4 during a ceremony attended by many of the volunteers. Sponsors included Church at Viera, St. John The Evangelist Catholic

Community, Prince of Peace Anglican Church and SunTrust Bank. “We’re celebrating our 25th anniversary of Habitat in Brevard County. It’s a big deal for us,’’ said Habitat board member Paul Kenyon, who led off the program. “It’s had a great effect on the county beyond the families that have been blessed with a new home. It’s not just what it does for the family, it’s what it does for the community. It’s a very contagious thing that has far-reaching effects.” Habitat President and CEO Joe Gassman said he was surprised at the Hagans’ living conditions. “I didn’t quite know what we were getting into with VIERA VOICE Photo

structed a one-man rope bridge. They also do endurance events, such as running through an obstacle course and carrying a stretcher with 120 pounds on it. The purpose of the raider team, according to Thomas, is “to

build self-conidence and to expand their [the students’] leadership skills.” Effective communication is emphasized, including speaking in front of large groups of people. “We also teach them that

part of the communication process is being able to listen to their teammates, how to listen to folks under them and the effect of handling those issues,” Thomas said. VV

Head to the marketplace for fresh, local food BY KEN PREVITI

Terry LaPlante, owner and chef of Jasper’s All Natural Foods, prepares to serve a freshly made portion of pumpkin butter to Mary Burla of Viera during a Saturday Suntree Marketplace sampling as others look on.

Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, local vendors offer delicious, delectable delights for sale to the public at 3280 Suntree Blvd. The Suntree Outdoor Marketplace is the site of choice for cakes, pies, salsa, gluten-free baked goods, organic and vegan edibles, jams, cookies, ice cream, box lunches, condiments and more – all made fresh. They can host a Love at First Bite food demonstration where they and their friends and neighbors can sample a delicious assortment of freshly made food specialties.” Daugherty has made a name for herself through her award-winning Mary’s Downtown Salsa. Herbal aromatics, lowers and hand-made soaps are among the items offered by local entrepreneurs who help the local economy grow while offering fresh culinary wares each Saturday. Local teen influences passing of food safety bill By Wendy Scheuring

Thirteen-year-old Dana Dziadul meets Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, during her visit to Washington D.C. in March 2010.

“It’s like history in the making,” said Colette Dziadul, regarding the passing of S510 on Nov. 30. “It’s the first food safety bill passed in 70 years.” Her daughter, 13-year-old Dana Dziadul, developed salmonella poona food poisoning at age three. “We’re actually blessed because she survived. We went through a period of two weeks when we weren’t sure if she was going to die,” Colette said. The incident left Dana with chronic joint pain and early onset arthritis. A normal day for her is coming home from

school and taking aspirin for joint pain. “The bill is really going to give the FDA more control over food recalls and food inspections,” Colette said. “We became interested in this bill because Dana almost died from eating cantaloupe, which was imported from Mexico. S510 gives the FDA more regulation regarding imported foods.” Dana travelled to Washington D.C. twice to fight for tougher laws governing our food supply. In March 2010, she testified before Congress regarding her experience, meeting with Senator Tom

Harkin of D-Iowa and Tino Cuellar, special assistant to the president for Justice and Regulatory Policy. “It was nice to share the message with Congress so that they can also spread the message as well. I told them my story and how they could help change the laws to help others not get sick,” Dana said. The bill is expected to arrive on the president’s desk by the end of the year, and Dana is expected to be invited to witness the signing. “We also met with representatives from Senator Bill Nelson’s and Senator George Le Mieux’s offices. It’s a nonpartisan bill; it’s about creating safer food laws for our country,” Colette said. VV

Brevard Zoo builds new animal hospital Parting Shot by Charlie Corbeil VIERA VOICE George White

Brevard Zoo’s Neil Abramson (left), chief development officer, and Trevor Zachariah, veterinarian, speak in front of the new animal hospital, which is currently under construction.

BY GEORGE WHITE

Brevard Zoo’s new veterinarian, Trevor Zachariah, took the job knowing that there would soon be an end to cramped working conditions at the zoo’s current hospital facility, a small building shared with the maintenance department. And he won’t have long to wait with the construction of the new 9,000-squarefoot Animal Care Center being built on zoo property in advance of completing fundraising for the $2 million facility. “It’s something that has been needed a long time. We’re in about 1,300 square feet now. At any given time, we‘ve got several animals that suffer from trauma, toxicity, infectious diseases and

other ailments. And, because we take such good care of the animals, they live to an old age where they get conditions related to that,’’ he said. The zoo has had several full-time veterinarians since 2003. Prior to that, Brevard Zoo contracted vet services, he said. “In effect, we’ll be able to deal with any ailment for any of the animals except giraffes and rhinos, and we’ll have a lot more room in holding pens inside, which will be a lot better,’’ Zachariah said. Neil Abramson, the zoo’s chief development oficer, faces the task of raising money for the hospital, less a half-million dollar grant that already has been obtained for the project. “We’ve raised about

$900,000 so far, but because of this economy the money has been more dificult to raise,’’ he said. Abramson said the project has already started because the grant required the money to be spent by a certain day, and zoo oficials want to take advantage of cheaper construction costs. “Now is the right time to build,” Abramson said. The public is invited to see the progress on the hospital at two open houses to be held Jan. 28 and Feb. 5. In addition, the zoo is offering commemorative tiles starting at $350, he said. The Brevard Zoo is located at 8225 N. Wickham Rd. For more information about Brevard Zoo or the hospital project, or to make a donation, call 321-254-4453, ext. 234, or visit the website www.BrevardZoo.org. VV

Green Anole The green anole is a common lizard native to the southeastern states. It is sometimes called a chameleon due to its color-changing ability. Temperature, humidity, health, and mood affect its coloration. For example, when it is severely stressed, the skin turns dark brown. This active and agile creature is slender in build, with a narrow head. It has specially adapted pads on its feet which permit it to run, climb, and cling to virtually any surface. As a defense against predation, the long, fragile, slender tail drops off its body

when grabbed; in time, a shorter tail regrows. Its diet includes small insects, such as crickets, cockroaches, spiders, moths, and grubs. VV
