Local boomers and seniors vie to be top model

Senior life George White

At age 89, Artie Ulmer of Melbourne is now the world record holder for the oldest bowler to bowl a 300 in a sanctioned league.

Oldest perfectgame bowler has exciting war story

Last year, SENIOR LIFE put out a call for local models. More than 120 boomers and seniors applied. Some were professional models and others had never considered modeling until now. After narrowing the search to about 75 men, women and some children, the models were invited to the Viera office for an initial “Go See.” There, they shared a little more about their interests and preferences, which aided further in the search for the perfect cover for the 2011 Boomer/Senior Guide. t Models and photographers met in different locations for t various shots and each time, the decision became increasingly more difficult. Who would be on the cover? The answer will be revealed on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at the 2011 Boomer/Senior Guide Launch Party! Come to the Melbourne Auditorium at 625 E. Hibiscus Ave. to meet the models and many other people who will help bring our directory to life. For more details, call 321-757-9205.

At age 89, Artie Ulmer of Melbourne is now officially the oldest bowler ever to score a perfect game of 300, which he achieved on Dec. 7 in the sanctioned Leisure Seniors League at Shore Lanes in Palm Bay. But that’s not the only exciting thing that has ever happened to him. Originally from Hicksville, N.Y., Ulmer served in World War II in the Air Force aboard a B-24 bomber and also manned the upper machine gun turret during bombing raids. After experiencing engine trouble over what was thenYugoslavia, the bomber was Or Receive a hit by aerial anti-aircraft bombs, forcing Abe Hardoon, M.D. $25 Off Gift Card the 10-member crew to bail out at 15,000 Board Certified - Internal Medicine Are you tired of long waits in ordinary Doctor’s Offices? feet.

I share in the loss of fitness guru Jack LaLanne, who passed away due to respiratory failure on Jan. 23, 2011 at the age of 96. while bodybuilder Vic tanny has been credited with opening the first professional gym in the early 1930s in rochester, n.y., LaLanne popularized the concept. he also launched an early-morning television exercise show geared for housewives in the 1950s. he was passionate about staying healthy and he shared that passion with everyone he met. we recently met two others who are passionate about their healthy bodies. Iris davis and Bill tinkler both live in Brevard County and they inspire me. you can read their stories on page 3. we have asked them to join us on Feb. 23 at the melbourne Auditorium for the Boomer|Senior Guide expo, so they can talk with you. maybe they will inspire you, too. Valentine’s day is this month. It’s such a romantic time. In the past, we’ve held vow renewal ceremonies and everyone loved them. we look forward to putting this on our schedule for next year. If you would like to renew your vows with us, please let us know. If you have already renewed your vows or if you have a special story to share, we’d like to know. maybe we’ll feature your story. we are working hard to bring you two very special expos in the coming months. First, is the Boomer|Senior expo on Feb. 23, where we’ll launch our 2011 Boomer Guide, a very popular directory to clubs, organizations and support groups in the county. next month, we’re bringing you the tech Know expo with just about everything you want to know about today’s technology advances in home, health, cars and communication. we are trying to bring the best we can find to both expos, because you deserve nothing less. we hope you’ll join us and tell us how we did. life.com hope to see you soon, Jill Blue-Gaines jill@myseniorlife.com Flower of the Month Yellow Milkwort (Polygala rugelii) is a Florida endemic, found only in the Florida peninsula and nowhere else. This lemon-yellow wildflower is common in moist pine flatwoods and can be seen in Wickham Park, Melbourne, and the Cruickshank Sanctuary, Rockledge. The plant is an annual, blooming year round, but primarily spring through fall. Twenty-three species of milkwort can be found in Florida. Milkwort was so named because it was thought to stimulate breastmilk; however, this attribute is unfounded. www.spacecoastwildflowers SuBmItted By wAyne mAtChett

Brevard libraries make beautiful music By maria Sonnenberg

Brevard County libraries are giving performing arts venues a run for their money with many excellent, free concerts to satisfy music lovers of all types. From early music to bluegrass, from classical to jazz, the options abound. Cocoa Beach Public Library Adult Program Coordinator

Austin Church

Senior life Photo

Margot Gould schedules as many as 60 programs a month, many of them with a musical slant. “We concentrate on it at Cocoa Beach, Gould said. “There’s an incredible amount of musical talent in Brevard. During snowbird season, the library hosts four to five monthly programs that include performances from artists such as jazz lady Sybil Gage and Florida troubadour Chris Kahl. The only problem is the concerts are so well received. The “concert hall can hold 150 people, typically much less than the number of folks interested in attending. “I usually have to turn people away at the door, Gould said. Although Cocoa Beach Library reigns in music programming, other libraries also offer free musical entertainment. For example, the South

Mainland/Micco Library will host two California musicians in February. Remember, these concerts are very popular, so consider arriving early for these firstcome, first-served shows. In addition to music, many other programs can scratch your itch for learning. Cape Canaveral Library offers memoir writing workshops. Melbourne Beach Library celebrates Chinese New Year with a bang. West Melbourne hosts programs on native plants and beginning beekeeping. The Central Brevard Library invites patrons to popcorn and a movie. Zumba, tai chi, knitting, stamping, art lessons and meditation are also popular offerings. To keep current on upcoming concerts and other library programs, pick up the library system’s monthly schedule of events, available at all libraries, or visit brev.org. SL

February 2011

happy heart month! Not only is Valentine’s Day this month, but the American heart Association celebrates healthy hearts in February, which is also Low Vision Awareness month. throughout the month of February, other organizations and support groups have designated weeks and days set aside as recognition dates devoted to promoting their particular concerns. We, at SeNIor LIFe, have set aside Wednesday, Feb. 23 as our day this year to recognize and promote you, our readers. that’s the date of our Boomer|Senior expo and the 2011 Boomer Senior Guide Launch Party. We have been preparing for this special day most of the year and every day that draws us closer to it, makes us more excited. For months, we have received calls from readers who want to be sure they are on the list to receive a new directory as soon as possible. our advertisers, who make it possible for you to receive the publication at no cost, are just as eager to be included as are the non-profit support groups who provide many wonderful services in our county. mark your calendars for Wednesday, Feb. 23 and make plans to join us at the melbourne Auditorium from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. But don’t expect this to be like any other expo you have ever attended. We plan to bring the Guide to life! many of our advertisers will be at the expo, so you can put faces to the names and logos connected to their services. We have invited local restaurants and other vendors to provide tasty samples of their specialties for a nominal donation to worthy charities, and we will have many volunteer opportunities available for those who are trying to find some way to give back to the community. In addition, we will have music, entertainment and demonstrations from some of the clubs listed in myGuide as well as the opportunity for you to become involved right there. the parking is free and admission is free. however, we ask everyone who attends to bring at least one can of food for the Sharing Center to help restock the pantry.

Antiques or Junque By anne MccollaM

Q: Since I was 8 years old, I have had a Tom Thumb toy cash register. Still in working condition, it is around 7 inches tall with a green metal color. It was made by Western Stamping Co. in Michigan. Does it have any value? A: Tom Thumb toy cash registers are collectible. They were made in the 1940s and 1950s in several colors.

Those in good condition are seen selling in the range of $20 to $30. Q: Could you please explain the definition of “pressed glass”? A: Pressed glass is also called pattern glass. It is clear or colored glassware that has been formed by a pressing machine, which has a plunger that pushes molten glass into a mold. Deming Jarves, owner of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Co., was one of the first to employ a glass pressing machine in the early 1800s. A myriad of factories produced pressed-glass table services that included pitchers, butter dishes, tumblers, spoon holders, creamers, sugar bowls, cruets and compotes. Brevard County now offers electronics recycling curbside Residents in unincorporated Brevard County now have the ability to recycle household electronics at curbside through Brevard County’s Solid Waste Management program and vendor Waste Management. Through the county’s newest recycling contract, residents may now contact Waste Management’s customer service department to schedule curbside pickups for computer equipment, laptops, scanners, printers, fax machines, stereos, VCRs, or televisions. Printer cartridges can be placed in a clear bag and placed on top of the items in the regular recycling bin. “Because household electronics contain toxic materials, they should not be going to landfills,” said Pam Shoemaker, Brevard recycling coordinator. “They are classified as hazardous by the federal government because cathode ray tubes have a significant amount of lead.” Household electronics can also be recycled at the county’s Central Disposal Facility Household Electronics Recycling Center in west Cocoa. To request a curbside pickup, customers north of Viera Boulevard and Patrick Air Force Base should call 321-636-6894. Customers south of Viera Boulevard and Patrick Air Force Base should call 321-723-4455.

Final shuttle flight sparks memories for former local astronaut By martha maSiello

The close of the Space Program this year evokes special memories for Bruce Melnick, former astronaut and Merritt Island resident. Born in 1949, Melnick grew up on the West coast of Florida and had lofty dreams throughout his childhood. He knew his life would involve flying in some manner. Upon graduating with honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Melnick went on to obtain a master’s in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida. He later was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of West Florida. During his 20-year career with the U.S. Coast Guard, Melnick received many awards including two Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Secretary of Transportation Heroism Award. He logged more than 5,000 hours of flying time in various aircraft. Melnick, who has logged more than 300 hours in space, was selected by NASA in June 1987 and became an astronaut in August 1988. He qualified for flight assignment as a mission specialist and flew on Discovery STS-41 in October 1990. He was a flight engineer on STS-49, the maiden voyage of Endeavour in May 1991. During that mission, astronauts rescued and repaired the Intelsat VI satellite. The flight was historic in many aspects, but most noteworthy was the only three-person spacewalk, which Melnick conceptualized during the flight. Commander Melnick retired from the U.S. Coast Guard, left NASA in July 1992 and worked as an executive with Lockheed Martin, United Space Alliance and Boeing at Kennedy Space Center. Since retirement, Melnick has returned to his roots on the West coast of Florida. He said, “I think it is a shame that the Space Shuttle is being retired before a viable replacement is operational. The shuttle fleet, although aged, still has many launch cycles left before they

Bruce Melnick, second from left, with the Crew of STS-49 Endeavour. should be taken out of service. We will have just completed the assembly of the International Space Station with the last shuttle flight. We will have no “down-mass” capability to bring home the science, hardware and experiments that the shuttles have provided.” STS-134 Endeavour, previously scheduled for launch in February, has been re-scheduled for its final launch in April 2011. It will deliver the Express Logistics Carrier-3 and the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station. For more than 40 years, NASA has facilitated the transfer of its technology to the private sector, benefiting global competition, the economy and citizens throughout the world. SL

This form of folk dance appeals to all ages. Dancing partners are optional, as Contra of dance provides a new partner throughout the night. Catie Geist, who has been enjoying folk dancing for 30 years, said, “Contra dancing is so much fun, and I always have a big smile on my face the whole time I’m dancing!” Contra dances are held the first Saturday of each month at the Cocoa Beach Recreation Center, 321 Ramp Road., Cocoa Beach with classes starting at 7:30 p.m. For more information call 321-4273587 or visit cocoabeachcontra.org. Liberty Bell Memorial Museum An overlooked gem of a military museum is in downtown Melbourne. The Liberty Bell Memorial Museum and Melbourne Military Memorial Park is a project of Honor America, Inc., located in Wells Park, just west of Hickory Street and south of Hibiscus Boulevard. The replica of the Liberty Bell in Heritage Hall is the focal point of the museum and is positioned directly in the center of the hall under a skylight. In 1976, during the year of our nation’s Bicentennial Celebration, Brevard County elementary and secondary schoolchildren collected the funds necessary to purchase an uncracked replica of the Liberty Bell. The bell weighs one ton and was cast by the White Chapel Bell Foundry in London, England, where the original Liberty Bell was cast in 1751. The museum’s Freedom Hall houses military displays and our defense of freedom. Uniforms, decorations, weapons and military items are on exhibit. Aircraft and ship models are included. Special paintings and photographs of military activities and accomplishments line the walls. At the west end of Freedom Hall is an 800-square-foot multi–purpose room with a library, a recognition and award area, a multi-media presentation area, and meeting and classroom facilities. The museum houses many documents and memorabilia of America’s early history covering the

Outdoors, the Melbourne Military Memorial Park features a garden and meditation bench for each of the 10 major wars in which the United States has been involved. Designed in honor of our service personnel, the park holds monuments for the five major military branches and a special monument to honor those who lost their lives while training at the Melbourne Naval Air Station in WWII. There is no charge to visit the Liberty Bell Memorial Museum, but the museum welcomes donations. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum is closed Sundays and Mondays. The Melbourne Military Memorial Park, located adjacent to the Liberty Bell Memorial Museum, is open daily from dawn to dusk. There is no charge to tour the park. FEBRUARY 2011 • SENIOR LIFE

We seniors certainly know how things have changed in our lifetime, some for the better and some questionable, but recently I had reason to recall another oldie. I commented to my son that I wasn’t sleeping too well lately and wondered if I needed a new mattress. His immediate reaction was, “Will you go and buy a new one? Yours is 50 years old.” Well, that wasn’t quite accurate, as I had moved mattresses around on different beds over the years. The one I’m using is only 30 years old, but the one he sleeps on when he comes to visit is 50 years old. How did it last so long? As a child growing up, I remember my mother turning over the mattresses every so often. When I married and we bought furniture, I always turned our mattress on a regular basis. My schedule was during spring and fall cleaning time. The custom was that one time you flipped the mattress over from side to side, the next time, from head to foot. That way, over the many years, every mattress was equally used on all parts. No wonder they lasted so long.

There is no remedy for love but to love more. Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862), Journal July 25, 1839

I can’t do that with the 30 year old mattress or any I’ve seen over the latest years because mattresses Lucy no longer have hand Kline grips or “handles,” two on each side. This enabled you to grasp the handles, slide the mattress in the direction that would place it in a position to be flipped, and then flip it over. Today it is impossible for me to turn a mattress unless someone is here to help me, as there are no handles. There is no way I could lift and turn a mattress by myself as we housewives did for so many years and perhaps many generations. Remember those days when things were made to last a long time? I’ve looked around at mattresses a few times in the past few years, debating replacing mine. But never do I see one with handles and the one I sleep on from 30 years ago does not have them either. The mattress my son and other houseguests have used over the years does have these handles. It is 50 years old and the comfort is still there. Ah, for the good old days when things were meant to last and much less was sent to the garbage dumps. For the record, my sleep improved. It wasn’t the mattress but another cause of restlessness. Collecting and appraising go hand in hand By GeorGe White

Collecting is so prevalent that many names exist for various types of collectors, such as: numismatist — coin collector; phillumenist — matchbook collector; or arctophile — teddy-bear collector. “Everybody has a different idea of what they want to collect,” said Don Guilbert, of West Melbourne. Guilbert’s baseball card collection is primarily from the 1960s onward. Gary W. Norman of Titusville received an elephant statue, which became the founding item of his collection, 32 years ago. The habit of collecting is often generational. Donna Chandler keeps a lamp from her grandmother’s owl collection while she collects wind chimes and coffee mugs with butterflies on them. Edwin S. Reynolds of Vero Beach has a collection of 20,000 toy soldiers at his home and gave lectures on them at the Cornell Museum of Art and History in Delray Beach, Fla. Having collections or valuable jewelry and antiques is nice, but it takes a trained eye to determine just how valuable your collection is, whether for resale or for insurance purposes. Carrie Williams, a certified gemologist appraiser at Wesche Jewelers has a trained eye. She completed two schools and has several years of experience as the top Wesche appraiser. “It took quite a long time to become an appraiser,’’ Williams said. “I love looking at very vintage and art deco jewelry and, as a jewelry designer, I like seeing different designs. That’s the fun part, seeing things that are different and unusual.’’ Jewelry appraisals can range from replacement value for insurance to the much lower value assigned to inherited pieces from an estate sale that are to be sold in the current market, she said. Antique appraisers, like William Doty of Cocoa, are not certified or licensed but depend on reputation and membership in a trade organization. Doty is a member of the New England Appraisers Association. “I don’t know everything, but I know a great deal after doing this for 40 years. I think it‘s a great thing for the people but you have to be very honest and fair,’’ he said. And, like jewelry, the value for selling prices can be up to 40 percent lower and can vary by region. “Like anything, it’s worth what you can get out of it,’’ he said. For more information about Wesche Jewelers, call 321-254-5441. For more information about antique appraisals by William Doty, call 321-638-2001. “It was the only time I ever used a parachute. I figured we were going to get captured by the Germans and eight out of 10 of us were, as soon as we hit the ground. I was among 13 Americans hidden and it took me about three months to get out,’’ he said. Unfortunately, during the time he was being held, one of his other brothers who was on the crew of a different bomber, was shot and killed. “It was very tough on my mother,’’ he said. A Brevard resident since 1957, Ulmer has bowled weekly for about 60 years, first scoring a perfect game in 2000, a 299 in 2001 and a 298 in 2005.

He uses a ball he bought for $5 at a yard sale in 1998. He never had a reason to buy anything else. “It still rolls,” he said. The recent 300 came as a complete surprise, he said. “I couldn’t believe it, I swear. All of the sudden the pins started falling. It’s right when you get close (to a perfect game) that it gets you nervous. You can‘t help but make a mistake,’’ he said. In the senior leagues, players often exclaim when they bowl a strike or a spare, he said. This time, it was the real McCoy. “All the little old ladies gave me a hug. They let out a big yell heard all the way to the desk. It was my lucky day,’’ he said. SL

When Adele Trieste realized her memory was failing, the first person she told was her husband. Together, she and John made the decisions that would alter both their lives for many years. John was the first person to walk in the door when Leeza’s Place opened and he never stopped learning ways to care for his beloved wife. The couple became a living icon in Brevard County and a testimony to the needs of not only the person requiring care, but the caregiver, as well. John Trieste remained a tireless caregiver and advocate for dementia and Alzheimer’s care as long as Adele lived. It is only fitting that he was selected as the first to receive the Leeza’s Place Caregiver of the Year Award. Congratulations from Senior Life, Leeza’s Place and Dr. Rosemary Laird!

Sally’s Gardening Tip Now is the time to prune grape vines. Pruning can be done any time before the vines begin to sprout new buds, but you must fight the urge to prune back other plants that have been damaged by the cold. Removing damaged foliage to help the plant look somewhat better is the most you will want to do. Do not start cutting back any woody stems or branches until spring comes and new growth is produced. If you have frangipanis that have been hit by the cold, watch the growing tip for signs of rotting. If you see the tip begin to rot then cut the tip off low enough to cut through a sound part of the stem.

Boomers vs Seniors Is the Generation Gap between a senior and a boomer great or small? Does it really exist at all? Does being born a boomer between 1946 and 1964 create vast differences, or are there other aspects of our lives that affect us even more? Well, let’s see. Cindy Michaud of Melbourne is a pastel and oil painter who is a member of the Pieces of 8 artists group. She is involved with many community organizations.

Melody Bencz is a Viera homemaker who loves to cook and eat. She also loves to gab with her neighbors.

My mother’s meat loaf — and only my mother’s. She always served it with a baked potato. I still can't have meat loaf without a baked potato.

What was your favorite food as a child?

Spaghetti. My aunt made it and other pasta with every kind of topping you can imagine. My mom was a good cook, but she was more a meat and potatoes kind.

My own meatloaf! Really, what I like most, is whatever anyone else cooks just because I’m not the one who has to cook it.

What is your favorite food now?

Chicken and dumplings. My grandmother was German and made big fat dumplings from scratch, and I do that now.

Way back, I was a dishwasher at a yMCA retreat resort. I was assistant to Brevard County Commissioner Carol Senne. Being the mother of two sons was a big job. Of all my many jobs, these are the ones I learned most from.

What are three jobs you have held?

I had my own day care in my home for 23 years and took care of 13 kids at a time between the ages of two weeks to kindergarten. I taught Sunday school for 25 years. For a while I used to help in my cousin's bakery.

The slowness of time. Summer was a huge adventure. There was no sense of time, no rush. Saturday mornings went on and on.

What do you miss most about your childhood?

Living in wide open spaces. We lived in a small town with homes on several acres. We were in Oscoda, Michigan next to Lake Huron with miles of forests on the other sides.

Can you name three public figures who have influenced you in some way?

no. I am my own person. nobody influences me. I am very outspoken and have strong opinions. So-called important people don’t impress me, and I wouldn’t walk across the street to meet even the president.

What is your pet peeve?

People who think they are better than others. Uppity people bother me. nobody is better than anyone else. God made all of us with our own abilities.

I can be myself with my Pieces of 8 painting group. They get the uncensored me, or I can quietly paint by myself and be content.

Where do you like to go to be by yourself?

Out in my back yard by our little lake. I look for birds and turtles and fish. Lots of other animals come around. It’s nice and quiet.

Leave It to Beaver came on around 4:30-ish. All the characters seemed like people I knew. I identified with them all.

What program did you watch on TV after school?

Oprah with her sense of positiveness, Bill Gates with his sense of generosity Miss Derflinger, my high school drama coach, for her sense of self-discipline. She really influenced me. Whiners and blamers — without a doubt. They bring themselves and everyone else around them down. I avoid people like that.

We were sent outside to play and later I worked. you either worked around or did work in the house.

A big green Plymouth station wagon and I failed my first driver’s test in it. I hit the orange cone backing up! There were no cell phones to blame then. I didn’t see it; I just hit it.

What kind of a car did you learn to drive in?

When I was four years old I began to drive my uncle’s logging truck. He’d start it up, get out and move the wheel blocks and let me go. I operated the steering and the brakes. When I came back he would put the blocks in front of the wheels, get in and turn off the motor.

For me as a talker, it’s got to be the telephone. The radio is way up there too, maybe because they’re both methods of communication.

What do you consider the greatest invention of all time?

The electric mixer. I used to have to help my mother and my grandmother with that little cranky egg beater mixer for everything. Whipped cream took forever and wore your hands out.

All-America Selections announces 2011 award winners By Jeff rugg

One way to pick the best plants for my garden is to look at the All-America winners for the new year. If it has been tested and approved in the All-America Selections (AAS) testing program, I can trust the plant will grow in my yard. They have almost 50 test gardens from Alaska and Canada to California and Florida. It is very useful to develop a test garden in a similar climate to your own landscape. They also have more than 175 display gardens across the continent. They aren't used for judging, but they do show gardeners how well the plants grow locally. AAS trial gardens have tested around 50 plant varieties every year since 1932, and they only accept previously unsold varieties. The AAS award recognizes a flower or vegetable for significant achievements, proven superior to all others on the market. The judges evaluate the plants all season long, not just during an end of season harvest. Only the entries with the highest nationwide average score are considered to be worthy of an AAS award. The judge evaluates entries by looking for desirable qualities, such as novel flower forms, flower colors, flowers held above the leaves, fragrance, length of flowering season and disease or pest tolerances or resistance. Vegetables are judged by observing traits, such as earliness to harvest, total yield, fruit taste, fruit quality, ease of harvest, plant habit, and disease and pest resistance. When you see the red, white and blue logo of All-America Selections on seed packets, bedding plant tags or in catalogs, it's a promise of gardening success. AAS has taken the guesswork out of finding reliable new flower and vegetable varieties, which will show improvements over other varieties. For the past couple of years, there were four winners, but there are seven winners this year. Gaillardias are sun-loving flowers that look like daisies. They often grow too tall and messy, but not “Arizona Apricot,” which grows to a compact 12 inches tall. It has 3-inch yellow flowers that deepen to apricot in the center. Hardy from zones 2 to 10, this perennial should be planted in masses in the front of full sunflower beds or in containers. Violas or pansies are great winter bloomers for the warm or cool winter states. Planted in the fall, they will

After

bloom all winter when not covered in snow as well as in the spring until the summer heat gets them. Viola “ShangriLa Marina” is a deep-blue flowering plant that only grows to 6 inches tall. For the first time in 78 years of AAS trial gardens, an ornamental kale has been chosen. It shows off a 1-foot diameter head of shiny green leaves with a bright pink center, which will last from November to March in warmer climates. It's a good fall plant to contrast with mums in colder climates. The plant that I am salivating for is the “Summer Jewel Red” Salvia. It has brilliant red flowers on a 20-inch stalk that is sure to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The seeds also attract goldfinches. There are three vegetable winners in this year’s AAS awards. The “Hijinks” pumpkin produces uniform 6-pound orange fruits. It’s notable for its resistance to powdery mildew. This year’s tomato winners are both excellent for hanging baskets and patio containers as they both only grow to about 2 feet tall. “Lizzano” is the first late blight-tolerant, cherry-fruited, semideterminate variety on the market. This feature will help many people get tomatoes later into the season. “Terenzo” is a cherry tomato with a very high sugar content, which makes it wonderful for salads. GREEN Eliminate junk in the landfill By Martha Masiello

There are solutions to curtail the daily ambush of unsolicited materials that congest your mailbox. However, it may be difficult to stop all your unwanted mail if you’ve subscribed to catalogs unless you contact each company individually and ask to be removed from their mailing lists. According to donotmail.org, more than 100 million pieces of junk mail are delivered to American mailboxes each year. A large percentage of it goes to the landfill unopened, and we still spend eight months out of 12 per year coping with the junk. Although it may take two to four months to notice a difference, there are some options you can use now. Call each company and ask to be removed from their lists. Avoid enrolling

in sweepstakes, customer surveys, completing warranty cards and product registrations. For an annual fee, topthejunkmail.com prevents 90 percent of your junk mail and plants a tree for every person who joins. For $1 per year dmachoice.org will keep you off catalog, magazine, credit and other mail offers you don’t want for five years. You can visit catalogchoice.org to eliminate catalogs coming to your home. If you do receive junk mail, there are some organizations that charge a monthly or annual fee to shred your unwanted mail safely and securely. You can help reduce the number of trees felled, energy consumed, carbon emissions and eco-costs associated with the printing, mailing and disposal of junk mail. Always recycle the junk mail that comes to you. SL

The 23rd annual Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County, Inc. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL will be held on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 at the Wickham Park Main Pavilion next to BCC on Wickham Rd., in Melbourne, Fla.

Caregiver class schedule Special to Senior life

Caring for another person is often one of the most demanding experiences a person may face in his or her lifetime. The Caregiving Education and Resource Program at Hospice of St. Francis provides the education necessary to care for the caregiver — both current and future. At some point in our lives, we will most likely be the caregivers for others. The program consists of six 90minute classes. All classes were developed nationally in response to the issues caregivers themselves identified. Hospice of St. Francis’ classes are offered at no cost to Brevard County residents. Each class focuses on a different caregiver issue: Class 1: The Experience of Caregiving – What is our commonality? What is a Caregiver? Class 2: Important Decisions and Communication - How do we make and whom do we tell about our Advance Directives? Class 3: Community and Personal Relationships – Are we as alone as we think? Class 4: Care of Self with Care of Others – How can we do both without feeling Guilty? Class 5: Meaning, Purpose and Finality of Life – What needs to be done at life’s end and what does death look like? Class 6: Grief and Bereavement — What’s normal, and how do we know? The next series of Caregiver Education classes will be held at the Cocoa Beach Public Library located at 550 N. Brevard Ave., Cocoa Beach, FL 32931. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 3 weeks beginning Feb. 1, from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. in the Jane Von Thron Room. To register or for more information, please contact Barbara Borman, RN. For information, call 321-269-4240 x330 or e-mail Barbara Borman at caregiving@hospiceofstfrancis.com. SL

Every time I encounter the next generation of technological breakthroughs, everything seems to become more difficult to learn and use. I used to have a heating pad with two buttons: on and off. Now, thanks to technology, I have a massaging heating pad for my chair that has more buttons than the cockpit of the space shuttle. It gives you two different types of massages, one called a rolling massage and the other one with a name that sounds like the relief you get from Mighty-Lax. Nowadays the user’s manuals for these new devices are written in two or three different languages. I find the Spanish and French versions just as easy for me to understand as the English version, and I don’t speak Spanish or French. Do you remember when copying machines first came

out and all you had to do was hit one button which was clearly marked “Copy?” Now, you have to go through a multi-step process, just to get the format set up. They also come with a separate slot for shredding and jamming paper called the “automatic feeder.” I would advise against using that slot though, because it doesn’t work right. It does shred and jam the paper, but inside the machine and it’s usually followed by a red blinking light, sparks and the smoke detector going off. I think I’ll stick to using scissors for tearing up my papers. What about these new cell phones? You really need to be careful with those things. If you keep them in your pocket, all it takes is one little shift of position and your neighbors could be listening to the conversation you’re having about them. They all have cameras on them now and I learned the hard way that without even trying you could end up with an extended video of the inside of your pocket on Facebook. grandparents ROCK ! Boomer grandparents are growing! By mary brotherton

Boomers, those innovative geniuses who introduced us to peace signs, tie-dye and ET are becoming grandparents. Theresa Noto Dunham is an enthusiastic grandmother who is involved in her grandchildren’s lives while making sure she maintains a firm grasp on her own identity. Noto Dunham said, “I think boomer grandparents are more hands-on than traditional grandparents. My generation is often involved on a daily basis with our grandchildren.” She said she feels her children appreciate the special relationship their mother is developing with their children. Today’s boomer grandparents know they could live longer than their own grandparents did, so they try to nurture relationships with the next generation and the one that follows it. SL

Grandparents who must become parents

Dear Gramma Dear Gramma: It has happened! I am in love again, which I never thought would occur after my beloved husband passed away. My new love has children and grandchildren, as do I. We are planning on marrying, but our families have not met each other, since they all live out of state. Most of them cannot afford to come here to meet us, then return again in the future for the wedding. Suggestions? In Love Dear In Love: Congratulations on finding love again. Before the wedding, introducing yourselves to each other’s family, through modern technology, using photos and

live video, will assist in getting known and accepted. This can happen without everyone visiting your home. Provide brief biographies, photo captions and, during the video conference gathering, discuss your wedding and life plans. Above all, reinforce your love for them and for each other, letting them know you are happy. Gramma Holly Fox Vellekoop, MSN, is the author of “How to Help When Parents Grieve” and “STONE HAVEN: Murder Along the River.” A retired Penn State University clinical instructor with six grandchildren, Vellekoop has a Master of Science degree in nursing. Send your letters to Gramma to hollyfoxvellekoop@yahoo.com. SL

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard County is a community-based nonprofit group that provides support, resources and legal advocacy for grandparents who have assumed the care of their grandchildren. “Because we put the child first, we provide everything from diapers and formula to counseling for troubled teens,” says Executive Director Mary Ann Sterling. “Statistics indicate children cope better in relative placement when removed from their home setting. Our goal is to assist relative caregivers in providing a safe and secure environment. There are 8,000 grandparents raising grandchildren in Brevard County, and 400 members in our all volunteer support group, the largest in the state of Florida.” The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren’s Cocoa office assists with legal assistance for grandparents awaiting adoption of their grandchildren and provides afterschool child care support. Support meetings are held in Titusville, Cocoa, Indian Harbour Beach, Palm Bay and Melbourne. For more information or emergency assistance, contact Sterling at 321-727-3947 or e-mail masterling321@aol.com. Be sure to attend the Boomer Senior MyGuide Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 23 to learn about more support groups in the county. SL

Moderation, not excess, is lesson of Twinkie diet By Dr. DaviD Lipschitz

Often in health, nothing is what it seems. Recommendations for healthy living seem to change continuously, as Americans look for easier and quicker solutions to bypass the tried-and-true methods of disease prevention. Recently, when a Kansas State researcher lost more than 30 pounds on a diet filled with junk food and daily Twinkies, every news station reported on the Twinkie diet as if it somehow vindicated our guilty love of sweets and snacks. Does it? can you eat junk food and lose weight? The answer is not quite as simple as you may think. On the surface, the Twinkie diet offers a very valuable lesson — eating in moderation, no matter the nutritional content, is still the key to weight loss. The Kansas State nutritionist tightly controlled his daily calories. in addition, he also supplemented his diet with protein shakes, vegetables and moderate exercise. By eating less, he lost weight. But look beyond the pounds lost, and the quality of his diet is clearly flawed. He may lose weight eating Twinkies and Ho Hos, but the poor nutritional content will certainly increase the risk of illness later in life. The Twinkie diet certainly received a lot of attention and hype, but i fear that the main message was lost. This researcher did not aim to encourage all Americans to eat more junk food; rather, he showed that the best diet must be the prudent diet. We do not have to deprive ourselves of those “guilty pleasures to lose weight and be healthy. Simply be sensible. Watch the carbohydrates and eat the right fats. Try to get some omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts or almonds and choose proteins such as lean meat and fatty fish. When you want to splurge on a highcalorie meal, simply pare down the next day to offset the excess. if, like Mr. Twinkie in

Sassy Club: “We Care Teddy Bears By Ken Previti

The SASSY CLUB, Sisters And Survivors Sewing Yarns – Creating Lovely Unique Bears, was founded in 2005 by Marie Ramsey and her sister, Michelle Belanger. After Marie’s surgery for breast cancer, she and her sister, also a survivor of breast cancer, embraced a new program, We Care Bears, for patients at the Moffitt Cancer and Research Center in Tampa. The SASSY CLUB decided that Brevard County patients could benefit from a few bear hugs as well. They began decorating and distributing huggable bears for cancer patients and organizations such as the Cancer Care Foundation of Brevard and Indian County and several others. “When you are diagnosed with cancer, any and every act of kindness directed at you, no matter how big or small, means a lot to you, Ramsey said. Each individually named bear has its own character. One bear named Henry was recently given to a soldier who firmly embraced him as he told them that his best friend’s name is Henry. Since its inception the club has created more than 2,000 bears, which are not for sale, but people can sponsor bears for patients to help share costs. People are also welcome to become members by calling 321-752-0066. SL

the Tonkinese

Candi is approximately 3-4 years old and was left on her foster mom's doorstep in a carrier very early one morning with no note as to who or where she came from. At first, her foster mom thought it was just a carrier from a garage sale compliments of her mother-in-law. Turned out to have a gorgeous Tonkinese (with beautiful big, round very blue eyes) kitty in it that was pregnant and had a smashed back foot. She went to the vet that same morning and ended up having 4 out of 5 toes on one foot amputated; but it doesn’t slow her down ... she can still run, climb, jump, etc. but with a slight limp. This sweet cat loves to talk to you once she knows you and comes up for pets and kisses. If you would like to give her a home, contact Sandy at 321-759-5242. Please be sure to leave a message.

Historical Georgiana United Methodist Church

Sunstitchers and Moonlighters want to give back By mary Brotherton

By linda S. humphrey

If you find yourself on Merritt Island, S.R. 520, on a slow day, head south on Tropical Trail about 5.5 miles and take in the beauty of a little white church that looks like a scene from an 1880s movie. “Quaint” is the word often used to describe Georgianna United Methodist Church, a structure that has graced the island for more than a century. The first worship service was held on Thanksgiving Day, 1886, conducted by Reverend Michael Black in the partially completed structure. Georgianna UMC is believed to be the first Protestant church in the area from Jacksonville to the Florida Keys. In 1885, Franklin Allen donated the land where the church now stands, and construction began in 1886. Lumber was shipped from St. Augustine by sailboat and carried over land from the Indian River to the building site by men of the community. Artie Pinkard Stone of Cocoa was married in the church in 1967. Her daughters Teri and Stephanie held their weddings there in 1973 and 1987, respectively. They each have a special place in their heart for the church. “I took my girls to Sunday school there when they were young. The

people were wonderful,” said Stone, a former island resident. “We were all married by Rev. Julian Nave. I remember the church as being quaint.” Laura Ingalls Wilder fans may be interested in knowing that Laura’s sister-in-law, Alice Wilder Baldwin, is buried in the cemetery near the Georgianna church. She and her husband had lived in Georgianna, Fla. from 1887-1892 when she passed away. Senior Pastor Corky Calhoun said it’s not about the building as much as it is about the people. “It’s a place where we can connect our story with the bigger story of God,” he said. The church is located at 3925 S. Tropical Trail. Services are held at 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on Sundays. Call 321-452-7523 for more information. Send comments or ideas to Ahnie2@aol.com. Senior Life DOG TALK

Jump! For My Love

Drs. Germaine Blaine and Craig Badolato join Medical Oncology Team

By Matthew “uncle Matty Margolis

Special to Senior life

I recently heard from a woman who has three dogs and one enduring problem: They jump. On everyone and everything. This problem has been going on for years. Her solution? Yell the word “no whenever the dogs jump on someone who would rather they didn’t. In the meantime, when it’s just family and when the dogs are at home, they’re allowed to jump on people, and they’re allowed to jump on the furniture. In fact, they're encouraged to do it. It’s an all too common story: Mom comes home. The dogs go nuts. They do their little happy dance, which includes a lot of spinning and barking and wagging and jumping. It’s adorable. It's heartwarming. It’s a wonderful ritual. And it’s conditioning. Whether it’s the right behavior or the wrong behavior, and whether or not we realize we’re doing it, we condition our dogs to behave in certain ways. If every time you walk through the front door your dogs jump all over you, and if you, in turn, squeal in delight and kiss them all over, you are essentially telling them you love it when they jump! Do it again! One of the benefits of dog training is that you, the owner, gain a deeper understanding of how your behavior affects your dog. Your posture, your body language, your voice, the tone of your voice, your energy and even your words all play a role in conditioning your dog. When I asked the owner of the trio of jumpers why she hadn't trained her dogs, she said she was afraid training would “rob the dogs of their spirit. Something to keep in mind when searching for a dog trainer: Good training utilizes love, praise and affection to inform the dog of desirable behaviors. It should in no way rob the dog of its personality. Dog Talk continued to page 38

Dog Talk continued from page 36 Bad training involves yelling and a host of punishments, and it usually creates bigger problems down the line. Ironically, this is exactly what she was doing. Unwanted behavior should be corrected — not punished. There are humane and effective methods of correcting a dog, but the method must be infused with meaning. You must consistently correct the unwanted behavior every time it is presented. Then follow up the correction with a demonstration of what you want it to do instead. Then, when good behavior is demonstrated some hearty praise and affection. a couple of tips on corrections: —You can use the word “no,” but never say it in conjunction with the dog’s name. You’ll never get him to come when called! —Kneeing a dog in the chest and stepping on his paws are inhumane tactics and should be avoided. There are much better ways to get your dog to stop jumping. For example, a dog with some basic obedience training should know the “sit” command. And a dog who has been given the job of “sitting” cannot jump. For more information on getting rid of problem behaviors like jumping, visit unclematty.com or read When Good Dogs Do Bad Things. Woof! Dog trainer Matthew “Uncle Matty” Margolis is co-author of 18 books about dogs, a behaviorist, a popular radio and television guest, and host of the PBS series WOOF! It’s a Dog’s Life!
