Six conservation heroes reel in prestigious ‘Charlies’ BY CHRIS BONANNO

The sixth annual Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards, sponsored by the Viera Voice and Preserve Brevard, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. April 14 at the Brevard Zoo. The awards are held each year to recognize the accomplishments of

local conservation leaders. Charlie Corbeil was well-known in the conservation community prior to his unexpected death in 2013. He was known as one of the original "Wetlands Rangers" at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands. In addition, Corbeil's nature photography is displayed throughout

the world and he helped many youths hone their wildlife photography skills as well. Corbeil also held a certification as a Florida Master Naturalist. Corbeil along with his wife Charlotte contributed a popular wildlife column each month in the Viera Voice. Here's a look at this year's deserving

Most of the time, Raleigh Berry is happy to see it rain at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands in Viera. It’s nature’s way of preserving and enhancing life. But, on April 13 and 14, Berry hopes the rain will skip a weekend for the 10th annual Viera Wetlands Nature Festival. When all of the zoos within the agreement have had a chance to display the sculptures, the sculptures will be split four ways between the group. “I think the most popular one is the elephant family; elephants are really popular animals,” Zirulnik said. “There are two adults and two

or three calves. People (also) like the giraffe. It’s the easiest one to find, but they’re all very (interesting).” There is no map for finding the sculptures, so guests will have to be on the lookout for each of the 16 metal animals. Area residents make their voices heard regarding interchange BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL Since the beginning of construction on the diverging diamond in Viera, local residents have been making their voices heard about the new changes. When the new interchange

was announced two years ago, people expressed their thoughts on Facebook. “From someone that moved down to the area from Naperville, Illinois, that has a diverging diamond, they seem strange at first, but they work well,” wrote Alicia Carson,

who is currently owner and director of Graceful Gifts Dance Academy in Cocoa. “It truly helps with traffic flow.” Although many others came to comment on how they had experienced similar successes in other states, not everyone was so enthusiastic

about the coming interchange. “Useless engineering,” local resident Steve Beck commented. “(It may create) more confusion among the roadways which raises the chance for accidents, and more taxpayer (money) wasted. How are we benefiting from this?” Some others were more concerned with the local drivers than the interchange itself, considering instead the population of senior drivers that live in the Viera area. “This is going to be a steep learning curve for our seniors,” noted Ian Fine, a realtor for Melbourne-based Curri Properties, LLC. One of the largest issues facing the new interchange at Viera Boulevard and I-95 is the problem of how to traverse from East to West Viera in a golf cart since using the new diverging diamond is off limits. Today, many local residents are concerned about the golf cart issue, and some raised their concerns to the office of District 4 County Commissioner Curt Smith, whose office resides on Judge

Fran Jamieson Way in the heart of Viera. “There’s a variety of feedback (that we’ve heard),” said Pat Woodard, Smith's chief legislative aide. “A lot of people are apprehensive about how (the diverging diamond) is going to operate, why it’s designed the way it is and various things like that. Other people have seen the (diverging) diamond interchange before, and say they’ve driven on it, it works great and they’re glad they’re doing it. “There’s mostly mixed comments on it,” Woodard continued. “Ones who have never tried it are apprehensive of it, (which are) 60, 65 percent of those type, the other ones are those that have done it before and understand how it works, and they’re supportive, (which make up) around 40 percent of those. Local girl named International Ambassador for Nothing Down BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL When the parents of Gianna Scauzillo found out that she was to be born with Down syndrome (DS), they experienced the same anxieties that affect any other parents of children with DS. But, they found out that, as a family, they would come to experience things much greater than themselves or the diagnosis of DS. Five-year-old Gianna Scauzillo of Brevard County recently has been recognized as International Ambassador for an organization called Nothing Down, which seeks to destigmatize Down syndrome and to spread awareness about families with DS. “We received a prenatal diagnosis of a heart defect which then led us to finding out Gianna would be born with Down syndrome,” said Gianna’s mother, Amanda Scauzillo. “There were moments of fear, grief and uncertainty because we were about to start a journey less traveled than

most. “Not knowing much, we took to social media and Google and started to educate ourselves on what life with Down syndrome may look like for us,” Scauzillo continued. “So much of the information

was outdated and honestly began to make things scarier for a new parent/ family. Once Gianna was born, I realized that she is more than any diagnosis. Most importantly, that she was a baby first and needed to be loved and cared for just like we did for her big brother.” After Gianna was born, the Scauzillo family connected with the Down syndrome Association of Brevard and began a Facebook group called Peace Love Gianna and “... naturally became a family of advocates.” Since then, Gianna and

her family have participated in multiple organizations and fundraisers, including the well-known Buddy Walk, where Team Peace Love Gianna raised more than $10,000 in support of the Down syndrome Association of Brevard. Nothing Down started in 2016 and the International Ambassador Program began in 2018, and has since gathered representatives in eight different countries and 22 states in the U.S. As an International Ambassador, Gianna participates in photo shoots, viral videos and the promotion of up-to-date

education and resources for parents that receive the news of a DS diagnosis. “Gianna loves the camera, she loves having an audience,” Scauzillo said. “She’s only 5, so I don’t think she really understands it all. David Schillhammer, the BSO’s new executive director. “The announcement was met with an immediate standing ovation,” said Schillhammer, “which was well deserved.” A native Floridian, Confessore has led the Brevard Symphony Orchestra since May 1995. “He is a jewel, he is a gift, he is a blessing to this orchestra and this community each and every day,” Schillhammer said. “It’s almost unparalleled that one person would be so devoted and committed to an orchestra for three decades.” Under Confessore’s tutelage, the BSO has grown from a few concerts each year to 12 subscription series concerts and many community educational and outreach programs. The 66th concert season will begin with “The Planets” in celebration of the Apollo 11 moon landing. An ever-popular composition, “The Planets,” a century-old symphony, evokes images of the solar system and outer space. Each movement of Gustav Holst’s suite is named after a different planet. “It’s an amazing work, a powerful work,” Schillhammer said. Other season highlights include Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony” and a new visual concert to include imagery and photo choreography. For the Valentine’s Day concert, vocalist Michael Andrew will sing Sinatra love songs. All regular-season concerts will be performed at the King Center. Viera’s Woodard steps down after 13 years as swim coach BY CARL KOTALA

Morgan Woodard and her mother, Debbie Tweedie, have built the Viera High School swimming program from the ground up, creating a family atmosphere along the way. But after 13 years, Woodard has decided to step down as Viera’s coach to concentrate on her own family. “My boys are 1 and 4 now and very active, tons of energy,” Woodard said. “It’s just time to focus on family. “My mom always said when I was done, she was done. We just decided this was the time to focus on the kids. They’re only 1 and 4 once.” Woodard, 34, has built quite a program at Viera.

The girls team has won nine district titles, including the last six in a row. The Hawks also won their first Cape Coast Conference championship this past season and have a regional title and two runnerup finishes on their resume. Viera’s boys team has won three district titles and, like the girls team, sent a number of swimmers to the state meet through the years. Woodard also has been named CCC Coach of the Year twice. “She developed a great program with high standards,” Viera athletic director Chris Gallagher said of Woodard. “They were quality academic

raising the bar this season. “We keep building. We keep growing,” Viera girls coach Nick Bigerton said. “The girls are playing outside of the season. They’re playing travel ball. They’re playing fall ball with me. “They just love the game. They’re continuing to work at it and they realize if they put the work and effort in, we are a good team.” The Hawks, who have won the past two district titles, are the clear favorite to make it three in a row thanks to the play of top scorers Micki Pippett, Grace Blythe and Brianna Staerk, plus the defense of Sammie Pippett and goalkeeper Tabby Caldwell. Viera also has benefited greatly from the addition of two experienced freshmen — Lexi Fischer and Lia Arbeeny — who already have had a big impact. “I think everything is pretty (much) the same (as last season), but I think we work better together,” Blythe said.

team in the nation,” Viera boys coach Charlie Crawford said. “If you want to get better, you’ve got to play better.” Viera has been getting solid contributions from players such as Dallas Thomas, Nate DePlancke, Jared Weiss and goalkeeper Austin Jensen. DePlancke, who thinks the Hawks’ schedule will help “open our minds a little more and show us where we need to be,” said Viera must learn to play together and focus on the future, not the past. “We can’t really go off of what the past has brought us,” he said. “We’ve got a whole new bunch of younger guys that are going to help us a lot. We’ve got to build them up and just take it from there.” Crawford believes the Hawks have a chance to go far if they can continue to tighten up their game. “I think we’re capable of winning the district and going pretty deep in the playoffs, if they can just maintain their discipline,” he said.VV

“We’re more of a team than individuals.” Should Viera, off to an 8-1 start, claim another district title and get back to the postseason, the next challenge will be to make a deep playoff run. That’s the goal of Viera’s boys team, too, which appears ready to get back to the postseason after losing to Merritt Island in the district

been playing for six years, is the leader on defense, which also has been getting good play from newcomers Marcel Poitier and Trenton Gowins. “I’ve been trying to teach the defense up a little bit since I’ve definitely been here the longest,” Rahmes said. “… I think this year is a rebuilding year. Next year, I know they’re going to be really good.” That doesn’t mean, of course, the Tigers are giving up on being competitive this season. “We’re building slowly up right now,” Eric Marr said. “It’s going to take some time. But I think by the end of the year, we’ll be gelling as a team.” The same could be said for Holy Trinity’s girls team, which already owns a couple of big wins against Merritt Island and Melbourne. “We have a lot of younger girls who are filling in what we lost year, which is exciting,” senior co-captain Olivia McHenry said. “We still have a lot of room to improve, so I think that makes the rest of the year more exciting.”

New coach Sarah O’Connor said she believes the Tigers are capable of getting back to the district championship game. McHenry, meanwhile, described the Tigers as a strong second-half team that is relaxed away from the field. “The more games we’ve been playing, the more they’ve been coming together as a team, which is great to see,” O’Connor said. “I’ve been seeing a lot of leaders step up. I’m really excited for a lot of the new players and just the future of the program.” Despite the loss of last year’s top scorer, Ann Kelly, the Tigers have been getting scoring from a variety of players along with strong play from McHenry, co-captain Hannah Gunderson and leading defender Alex Davenport. “It’s really exciting to see the ball get thrown around a little bit more and for Olivia, especially, to step up in kind of a point guard position,” O’Connor said. “Hannah runs the midfield really well. She’s really exploded this year.” VV

At the same time, the Tigers have reached a point in their program where they enter each season thinking about much more than becoming district champs. “We’re always trying to be a little better each year,” Tigers coach Mark Harrison said. “Last year, the boys made it to the regional semifinals and lost in a close tiebreaker and the girls made it to the state tournament. That’s huge. “This year … we’re always trying to push ourselves to improve.” The boys and girls teams both have a new No. 1 at the top of the ladder this season. Holy Trinity’s boys, who have won five consecutive district titles, are led by junior Nick Olumu. “Nick’s dedicated to his tennis game,” Harrison said. “He’s ranked No. 11 in the state in junior tennis in Florida. Nick has his eyes set on playing at a D-I college and he has the game for that. “Nick’s an all-court player. And besides his game, he has drive and determination.” Playing behind Olomu are junior Bodie Cohen, senior Briggsie Kilborne and junior Kevin Platt. Eighth-grader Chris Moore and senior Kevin Jacobus rotate between the No. 5 and 6 spots and eighthgrader Conner Bierbrunner plays No. 2 doubles and is in the top eight in singles. The Holy Trinity girls team, which has won four consecutive district titles, features a nice mix of talented young players with a few veterans in the top five. Allie Dzheneva, a seventh grader, leads the way for the Tigers. She’s followed in the lineup by senior Karina Popowycz, junior Anjani Epasinghe and senior Caroline Dixon. Harrison described his undefeated No. 5 singles player — sixth-grader Natalie Morris — as a “future superstar” for the Tigers. Given how much success Holy Trinity has had through

Hawks can’t wait to hit field for spring football practice BY CARL KOTALA Spring football practice is coming soon, and the Viera High Hawks can’t wait to get started. The players will hit the field for their first practice April 22, with the spring game set for 7:30 p.m. May 17 at West Orange High School. “What I like about spring football is that every player has a clean slate and is trying to earn their position,” Viera coach Derek Smith said. “I like to tell every kid there are no given positions, no given spots. I was asked the other day, ‘Where is my kid going to fit on the depth chart?’ “My statement was, ‘There is no depth chart until the week

we play West Orange.’ ” There is plenty of reason for the Hawks to be excited about the upcoming season, including the return of quarterback Bryce Norton. After leading the state in total yards (4,706) by throwing for 3,353 yards, running for 1,338 yards and accounting for 36 touchdowns, Norton was named the Class 7A Offensive Most Valuable Player by Florida High School Football. The best part about that for the Hawks is that he did all that as a sophomore. As dangerous as Norton already is, Smith said he would like to see the quarterback work on his drop-back passing game this spring.

Viera is graduating two of the state’s top performing receivers in Sean Atkins and Shamaar Mohr, but there are a number of intriguing prospects looking to step into a bigger role. “I’m really excited to see what Jeremiah Housey does this year,” Smith said. “He’s establishing himself as one of the fastest kids in the county.” Housey, who has run 10.89 in the 100 meters during track season, will be joined by transfer Davis Mallinger and returners Caleb Osburn, Karsten Poole and Jarvelle Francis. Donovan Giles, a 6-foot-4 freshman who dominated at the JV level, will also get a chance to become a playmaker on varsity.

Holy Trinity football hopes to build on historic season BY CARL KOTALA When the Holy Trinity Tigers hit the field for the first day of spring practice this month, they will try to build on the best season in program history. “The mission is to capitalize off of last season,” Holy Trinity coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “Each team is different. One year has nothing to do with the next. However, you still want to try to use the success of one season to catapult you to bigger and better things. “You don’t want to go backwards.” Spring practice begins April 22 and will conclude with a spring game next month. At press time, Hooks said he still was trying to finalize the date and spring game opponent for the Tigers. Holy Trinity won the first playoff game in school history last season, beating Cardinal Newman 34-30 in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals. Three big-name players will graduate. Defensive end Seth Coleman was a top-300 recruit who signed with Illinois. Linebacker Sully Altman was named allstate and announced on his

Holy Trinity is also expecting to get a big contribution at running back from transfer Kevin Chandler. Of course, the big excitement around the Holy Trinity program came when Hooks announced on Twitter that the school will build a new $5.5 million facility and turf field.

Manatee Elementary students donate shoe collection BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL For some, collecting shoes is a fun and rewarding hobby — but others, especially young people, might not have the same opportunity to even have a single pair of shoes. Soles4Souls is a project dedicated to donating shoes to children in povertystricken countries and accepts donations from all over. One Brevard County student decided that getting involved with a donation program was a perfect fit for cutting down on his growing shoe collection. Ryan Dierking will donate his gently-used shoes as part of the Future Leaders of Manatee club at Manatee Elementary School in Viera. “The kids are collecting gently-used shoes from March 24 to 29,” said Ryan’s mother Lorraine Dierking. “What they’re going to do is have a day at Manatee Elementary where all of the kids (will

collect funds), and the money that they make will hopefully help them to mail the shoes to Soles4Souls. “It was kind of a perfect fit for (Ryan),” Dierking said. “(At first) we weren’t sure what the club was about. However, shoes are his thing; he owns more than I do! My husband

2019 Innovation Games challenges talented students BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL One of the greatest sources of creative invention isn’t actually some stuffy boardroom in a think-tank — it’s inside the young and vigorous minds of today’s STEAM-driven school children. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. It is the core focus of many of Brevard’s schools. Brevard Public Schools recently partnered with technology leaders, including Boeing and NASA, to host the inaugural Innovation Games. The Innovation Games are a series of competitions held for schools around Brevard in which they compete in STEAM-focused challenges. The teams were made up of sixth-grade students from both standard and magnet schools, public and private.

The first day of the Innovation Games was held Feb. 28 at the Brevard County School District (BCSD) center in Viera. One of the largest competitions during the first day was the Destination Mars build. Students gathered in the center of the BCSD building complex to showcase

There were many other competitions held throughout the BCSD complex, including rooms for testing robotic builds, building wearable technology, and even coding within a Minecraft server. “The most interesting (project) would have to be one student from West Melbourne School of Science,” said Gifted teacher Amanda Howell. “Just his detail to everything; the coding factor that he put into (his project, especially,) because he could use all the basic (coding), but he added more.” Within the Minecraft coding challenge, students were asked to design and build a living structure for research on Mars, within the world of the game of Minecraft. “(The student) was adding

so much more code that our Carlos, who works for Microsoft, was saying that Microsoft would hire him in a heartbeat,” Howell added. The second day of the Innovation Games was held March 8 at the Florida Solar Energy Center. Once again, students gathered together to compete in science and technology challenges. “The key is to create a culture where kids are doing things where they can then use in the future for job opportunities,” said Brevard County School Board Member (District 4) Matt Susin. “So when you go and see the drone races, it’s not about the drone racing. It’s about them building the drone, using the 3-D printer, using all of the components that are there.” While this was the first year for students to compete in the Innovation Games, planning for next year is already underway. Holy Trinity student advances to national spelling bee BY CHRIS BONANNO Dhyana Mishra, an eighth-grade student at Holy Trinity, has earned a berth in the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. “I’m really excited,” said Mishra, who spelled “dudgeon,” which according to MerriamWebster means a fit or state of indignation. “I’m hoping to represent … Central Florida really well. It’s going to be a great experience.” Mishra said she will take part in a written test prior to the oral portion of the bee, which will be held in late May. If she passes that portion, she’ll move on to the oral spelling competition. Spelling Bee. This year’s victory accounted for her fourth county spelling bee title in five years. Mishra said she won as fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth grader. As a fifth grader, she finished second in the county bee but gained a berth into the sectional bee where she won and advanced to the national bee. Dhyana Mishra said she was and is inspired to spell by her sister, Stuti, who finished as the runner-up in the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2012 held in Washington, D.C. Nguyen, who said she had only participated in the district bee once before, also was ecstatic about her performance. “I feel super proud of myself actually,” said Nguyen, who said she

Local Eagle Scout establishes flag collection

BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL Boy Scouts have long been associated with patriotism, and one local Eagle Scout took that message to trial. Eagle Scout Ryan Jarvis of Viera, 18, decided to create a permanent establishment to collect old and retired flags at the Government Center of Viera. “I got inspiration (for the project) from my family,” Jarvis said. “My father, grandfather, my mother’s brother and my father’s brother — they’re all veterans; I’m inspired by their service and I wanted to give back not only to them but to all people who have served and paid tribute to the flag.” According to Jarvis, many are unaware of how a flag should be properly disposed of once it has reached the

point of retirement. The Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts of America) offers a number of options for retiring a flag, including cutting and burning, conducting a burning ceremony, recycling the material, or even cutting the flag in a specific manner and disposing of the flag normally. Specifically, the Scouts BSA guidelines state that, “We simply need to ask ourselves if the manner in which we are retiring (destroying) the flag is dignified. If the answer is yes, then that method is perfectly acceptable.” “(A flag should be considered for retirement) when the colors are faded, when there are rips and tears, when there are stains,” Jarvis explained. “Any sort of visible damage.” For his project, Jarvis built

a receptacle for the flags as a permanent installation in the Government Center of Viera, where it now resides in Lobby C. The flags are collected at interspersed intervals, and Jarvis intends to find a local veterans program to take over the collection once he is no longer living in the area. VV

Technology helps Holy Trinity’s SRO protect his school BY ERNEST ARICO If you’re thinking about sneaking inside Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Upper School undetected, you’re going to have to get past Cpl. Mark Spencer and the latest technology installed at the school. “The school has installed a lot of new technology to make the school safer,” said the 6-foot, 5-inch Spencer. “We have a new gunshot detection system, new cameras and sensors, new badging system, new announcement system and new phone lines.” For example, the gunshot detection system allows Spencer and school officials to quickly detect gunshot activity; determine what type of weapon was used to fire the gunshot; greatly reduce false alarms with dual authentication, and display a floor plan of the school with shot location information. “Anything that I have suggested to make the school and its students, staff and teachers safer, the school has implemented or is implementing,” Spencer said. “It’s a great place to

work.” Born in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Spencer graduated in 1993 from Osceola High School in Kissimmee where he excelled in basketball and track. In 1997, Spencer received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Weber University. He began his career in law enforcement after he graduated from the Technical Education Center of Osceola (TECO) in 2011. Shortly after completing his police academy work at TECO, Spencer was hired by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. He was assigned to road patrol duty with the department’s East Precinct, which covers Merritt Island and Cape Canaveral. Last August, Spencer left the road patrol to become Holy Trinity’s SRO. However, he was only assigned to stay at the school for six weeks. School officials quickly recognized how valuable Spencer was and wanted him to stay on permanently. “He (Spencer) was very personable and good in working with people,” said

“We were the first private school in Brevard County to sign a formal agreement to retain a fulltime school resource officer to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff,” Salyer said. Spencer said his duties include patrolling the school, making sure gates

are locked, monitoring the school’s visitors badging system and numerous cameras, advising school officials about safety upgrades and holding safety classes for juniors and seniors.

Viera students win another ocean science academic competition BY CARL KOTALA Viera High School’s ocean science academic team is turning into quite the competitive powerhouse in the state of Florida. Yep, we’re talking threepeat. Viera’s Dani Dowgiallo, JoJo Campbell, Aleena Argull, Katelyn Palmer and J. Ungos — who make up Viera’s B team — won the Manatee Bowl, which was held in late February at FAU Harbor Branch in Fort Pierce. There were 16 teams from 10 different high schools from Key West to Jacksonville at the regional competition, which tested students on their ocean science knowledge through

buzzer-style, multiplechoice questions and open-ended, team challenge questions. Viera’s third consecutive win means five students will head to the 22nd annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), which takes place April 11 to 14 in Washington D.C. Morgan Woodard, who teaches marine sciences at Viera and served as the team’s coach along with her mother, Debbie Tweedie, and Viera High alumnus Oscar Sang, said she was impressed with the way the team came together. “The interesting thing about the B Team is that all five of the girls … they’re kind of the same person,” Woodard said. “They are

really smart, obviously. They are quiet, really studious, but not the type of person you would think would be really confident in an academic competition. “They worked so hard. They trusted each other. They’re all friends. And they just crushed the competition.” Viera’s A Team, which consisted of Morgan Bentley, Mason Watts, Zack Chace, Maggie Zendehrouh and Zach Hafele, took seventh place in the competition. The championship matchup was an all-Brevard County showdown between Viera and Eau Gallie.

Home2 Suites will offer family-friendly, extended-stay rooms BY CHRIS BONANNO

Sycamore Investment Group will soon begin construction on a Home2 Suites by Hilton in Viera. The four-story extendedstay hotel will have 118 suites, Sycamore said, and it will be located across the street from The Avenue Viera. The Home2 Suites will be adjacent to a Fairfield Inn and Suites, also developed by the investment group, and will sit at the intersection of Lake Andrew Drive and Town Center Avenue. Sycamore Executive Vice President Ronak Jasani said the Home2 Suites is slated to open in the second quarter of 2020. A release from Sycamore also noted that the company owns and operates the Hampton Inn, located at 130

Sheriff Drive in Viera. Home2 Suites by Hilton will be an allsuite, extended-stay hotel, according to Sycamore. All rooms will include a kitchenette to create a home-like environment perfect for corporate travelers and families visiting for several days or weeks. According to Sycamore, it will feature a patio and pool area along with outdoor seating and grills. Additionally, the hotel will offer a free breakfast, internet access and a fitness center. “Home2 Suites is the only extended stay hotel in the market that offers suites with cooking facilities so guests can grill outside or prepare something in their room if they don’t want to go out,” said Jasani in

new look on the inside, big TVs, and a new and improved menu with some healthier options that weren’t necessarily there before — there’s just a lot of good things going on at Beef’s.” Beef ‘O’Brady’s across Florida (and Brevard) will be renovating both the style of the restaurant and the menu for an improved experience. The venue on Murrell Road and Viera Boulevard is the first of many Beef ‘O’Brady’s to experience a total renovation. It is expected to open between May and June. “We closed the store in Viera not long ago, and we now have a franchisee that’s going to reopen that store,” Cecil said. “It’s kind of a success story already. What they’re doing there is going to turn out to be beautiful. So, we’re excited to see it be a better complement to that center now.” The franchisee reopening the venue in Viera is Joe Baker, who also runs the Beef ‘O’Brady’s in Melbourne. “We will doing a complete remodel inside and out,” Baker said. “Our initial plans

(include) a 150-seat floor plan with a large indoor/ outdoor bar, (and) we expect to be open in the May-June time frame. “I have been in the area for almost 40 years living in Melbourne and Suntree,” Baker added. “I started my first Beef ‘O'Brady's in Melbourne 15 years ago and have been the owner-operator there since the opening; I am also a part owner of the Satellite Beach store.” Beef ‘O’Brady’s will add new and healthier items to its menu, such as more salad options and new meal specials. The renovation of Beef ‘O’Brady’s venues themselves, however, is the main focus of the brand overhaul. “It’s the refresh (that really counts),” Cecil added. “(The effort is) to make it more modern, more hip, just a little more comfortable to walk into. You can hang out or return at sunset and that’s usually spectacular. It’s so beautiful and quiet on the water.’’ From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dave MacDonald will conduct tours of the Wetlands. “Dave is one of our Wetlands Rangers, who is quite a character and lots of fun,’’ Berry said. “He is such a wealth of knowledge and knows all about wildlife. Being in golf carts will provide visibility that will be magnificent.’’ Dr. Stephen Blythe will conduct an introduction to photography class for people who want to learn how to take photos at the Wetlands. “Dr. Blythe has 40 years of experience in photography,’’ Berry said. “It’s geared to beginners. People can even use their smartphones, and he’ll give tips on how to take the best photos.’’ Walking tours conducted by Wetland Rangers will be conducted throughout

the morning and afternoon. The tours will last from 45 minutes to as long as an hour. The Flight of the Raptors, falconers and educators will return with their birds of prey. Shows will be conducted throughout the day. Attendees will have an opportunity to take photos. “I love seeing both the involvement of adults as well as the children,’’ said Laurie Widzgowski, the marketing and event coordinator for The Viera Company and Viera Community Institute. “You really see the excitement on everyone’s faces as they line up for the tours. Dowgiallo said the trust among the five members of Team B helped carry the day. “We felt like we were really locked in,” she said. “We worked together as a team. We had these topics that each one of us was more specialized in, so if the question was more focused on that specialization, the person who knew more about that would probably answer that one.” Admittedly a little more “reserved” during her first competition last year, Dowgiallo said she felt much more comfortable this time, noting she and her teammates

— Dani Dowgiallo felt a close bond that included a lot of studying at each other’s houses and many heart-to-heart talks. Viera finished ninth at the nationals two years ago and was in the top 20 last year. In addition to the competition, students will get to meet mentors and top experts in marine sciences and take an interactive field trip as they’ve done on previous trips to Oregon and Colorado. While the team members

might have changed through the years, the Hawks just seem to keep on succeeding and winning championships, proving each title was no fluke. “We lost a lot of key players from last year, so we wanted to make sure we came back and proved ourselves, just to show it doesn’t matter,” Dowgiallo said of Viera winning for a third consecutive year. “People graduate and you can still achieve anything if you put your mind to it.” VV

Faith Viera offers adult daycare twice a week BY JULIE STURGEON Faith Viera Lutheran Church's adult daycare center offers a warm welcome and a flurry of activities for care receivers from 1 to 4 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. “This is basically a time of socializing for the care receivers,” said Fran Kashchy, a volunteer coordinator. “Our program is also for caregivers to have a much-needed break.” Music, card playing, crafts, chair yoga and senior suitable exercises are among the choices for participants. There’s no need to worry about the price since the fun-filled afternoon sessions are free. Monthly activities at the church include entertainment, movies and presentations. While the program is small, the dedicated group of volunteers are eager to help more visitors. “We have a good group of volunteers, so guests will have plenty of attention,” Kashchy said. Caregiving for a loved one can be emotionally exhausting. Caregiving often is an aroundthe-clock job, and it helps to know there is some time during each week for a respite. For families and caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients, the job

can be especially demanding. “We are primarily targeted to stage one Alzheimer’s guests, but we are here for anyone who seeks companionship,” Kashchy said. A few hours of social interaction for loved ones while caregivers shop or run errands can be emotionally rewarding. Also, on the first Thursday of each month, Faith Viera offers a free caregivers workshop that is run by Hospice of St. Francis. Anyone interested in attending the workshop is welcome to drop off their loved one at the church care receiver area. Caregivers should note that no medical services or assistance is provided at the church. With this in mind, there are a few house rules for afternoon guests. Guests must be able to ambulate independently. Use of a walker or cane is acceptable. Guests must be able to use the bathroom. They must have the ability to eat and swallow food to enjoy the snacks provided. Sullivan edges Bergeron in sudden-death playoff BY DAVID D. HORST Guy Sullivan defeated Tom Bergeron on the third sudden-death playoff hole to win the Viera East Men’s Golf Association’s 2019 Club Championship on Feb. 21. Sullivan won the 2017 Club Championship. Bergeron was the defending champion. Tim Brown and Mike Piccininni also were part of the final four, which was established during an earlier qualifier. More than 100 golfers signed up to play in the March 14 VEMA Member Guest tournament, which was a fourman scramble event. Due to the high number of four-man teams, the only scores recorded

to determine the winner were birdies and eagles. This allowed everyone to finish much sooner and enjoy a luncheon at the Divots Restaurant. Abe Leonard, Jim Kopp and Neil Murphy finished first with a score of 13-under par. The second-place team of Robbie Rosenberger, Adam Rosenberger, Bob Rosenberger and Chris Gozevich also shot 13-under par. Ross Shiffrin, Jason Burford, Dick May and Frank Westwell placed third at 12-under par. Ted Adamski on No. 4, Tom Howell on No. 7, Mark Hughes on No. 13 and Leonard on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin. Record crowd enjoys Senior Expo in Cocoa BY ERNEST ARICO More than 1,000 people packed the Space Coast Convention Center in Cocoa for the eighth annual Boomer Guide Senior Expo on March 1. The expo included live music, educational exhibits, demonstrations, limited free medical screenings and the unveiling of the 2019 Boomer Guide, published by the award-winning Bluewater Creative Group. The group, which organized the expo, also publishes the Viera Voice and Senior Life of Florida. The 2019 Boomer Guide is a comprehensive fact book of everything boomers and seniors need to know about

what’s going on, things to do and places to visit in Brevard County. “We had a full house and we got a lot of wonderful compliments,” said Bluewater Creative Group CEO Jill Blue. “The exhibitors and attendees had a wonderful day. The band and dancers were awesome. Many of the vendors said it was the best expo we’ve ever put on.” One of the highlights of this year’s expo was the live entertainment provided by Lanakila’s troupe of Polynesian dancers. “We take people on a musical journey to Polynesia,” said Nathan Pokipala, who started Lanakila’s 29 years ago.

A native of Maui, Hawaii, Pokipala said Lanakila’s has its beginnings as the first traveling Polynesian entertainment company on the Eastern Seaboard. The live performances included musicians, hula dancers and a male knife dancer. “I came to watch the hula girls,” said a smiling 75-yearold Jim Phillips of Michigan, who makes his “snowbird” home in Viera. “This is the third time I’ve been here and it gets better every year. They put on a good program.” About 60 exhibitors filled the convention center and adjacent hallways, including some of the expo’s major

“My number one duty is to keep the kids safe,” he said. “I want to be a positive influence in the school. I want to catch things before they get out of hand. I want to take a proactive approach.” Spencer said the hardest part of his job is keeping up with the social media outlets and vaping. “I want to stop the foolishness that’s happening on social media,” he explained. “The bullying, posting a threat, that’s what I want to prevent. Everything is constantly changing. Kids are always one step ahead of you. I want to keep up with the technology and have a better grasp of what kids are doing with their phones.” Spencer also said he’s held seminars on the dangers of vaping. Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. The term is used because e-cigarettes do not produce smoke, but rather an aerosol, often mistaken for water vapor that actually consists of fine particles. Many of these particles contain varying amounts of toxic chemicals, which have been linked to cancer as well as respiratory and heart disease. “It’s a real problem,” he said. “Not just in Brevard County, but all

across the U.S.” When asked the difference between working at a private school compared to a public school, Spencer’s answer was quick and simple: “A private school is a smaller school but there is less red tape,” he said. “I can talk to the school president and dean and make a suggestion and it will get done. You can’t do that in a public school. Also, the kids here at Holy Trinity are more focused, and the school does a great job in preparing them for college.” Spencer also said he approaches his job every day with thoughts about the events that happened on Feb. 14, 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. On that day, a gunman killed 17 students and staff members and injured 17 others. “I try to do my part,” he said. “I make sure the cameras are working, the gates are locked, but more importantly I want to have that relationship with kids where they can trust me and touch base with those that know what’s happening in school.” In addition to his SRO duties, Spencer coaches Holy Trinity’s junior high school basketball team. “Basketball gave me the avenue to work with kids,” he said. “I like being a coach, counselor and mentor.” Spencer and his wife, Sandra, have three children, ages 20, 16 and 10. They reside in Melbourne. VV
