Decorations at Viera East mark the start of the holidays BY GEORGE WHITE It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season, and the two Murrell entrances of Viera East are leading the way. There are more than 700 homes in 12 communities in the area, so the Viera East Garden Club has made it a tradition to design and help decorate the entrances, said Myrl Anderson, a community volunteer working on the display with his wife, Margo Anderson. “We store all of this stuff

every year and pull it out at the beginning of the holiday season. We tested every light and have all of it drawn out so we sort of know what it’s supposed to look like,’’ Myrl Anderson said. He was quick to point out that a key person in making the display a reality was Aileen Childers, president of the garden club, who took over for the initial designer and former club president Shirley Lloyd. “We try to reuse everything we can, but we also put some Continued on page 2

Letter from the

EDITOR

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Now that November has passed, we must switch gears to prepare for the holiday season. For some, this means buying gifts and scheduling vacations around the family. Whatever this season brings you, I encourage you to take a break to spend quality time with your loved ones. Throughout this issue of VIERA VOICE, there are various holiday events and activities the community will hold. If you’re looking for something to do at home, one of our writers, Angela Smith, wrote a great list of holiday movies that you can share with friends and family. Another VIERA VOICE writer, Ken Previti, followed the journey of a Christmas tree from a seedling to the decorated tree in your house. Maybe you haven’t stopped to think about where a Christmas tree comes

from before, but we have it covered so you don’t have to! I had the pleasure of meeting Dij Pacarro, a iber artist, this month. She attended the same high school as President Obama and creates pieces inspired by her childhood spent in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pacarro’s positive outlook on life and interesting stories were almost too plentiful to it on one page. I was also fortunate enough to interview Ruth Bentley, a wonderful woman who has devoted more than 50 years volunteering for the American Red Cross. Bentley now resides in Brevard and has helped residents through various disasters. Interviewing this inspiring woman was a privilege for me, and I know you’ll enjoy her story. What better way to kick off the holidays than reading about such a giving spirit? We live in such an outstanding community where ordinary people have extraordinary stories to tell. I hope that you enjoy reading about them in VIERA VOICE. Have a great December and a happy new year!

Continued from front page money into refurbishing some of the decorations each year,’’ Childers said. The display this year includes 11 ive-sided stars that were hung Nov. 16 by workers with M&M Professional Grounds Maintenance. The worker also installed wreaths

and strings of small white Christmas lights around the entrance signs, in the ground cover and up the nearby palm trees. Margo Anderson said that the display is indicative of the type of residents that live in Viera East and help fund the decorations.

“You can tell it’s a very friendly community,’’ she said. VV

Kappa Delta Pi rolls reading into Viera BY ANGELA SMITH To members of the Kappa Delta Pi international honor society at the University of Central Florida in Cocoa, supporting education goes beyond the classroom. Members of the newly formed liaison chapter will join together on Dec. 14 at Books-A-Million in Viera for story time, bringing attention to literacy among children. “I think it will be doing something fun outside of school to put our new skills to work,” said Shloe Kerness, UCF elementary education instructor and chapter sponsor. “It’s the importance of supporting literacy programs in Brevard County and sharing their passion for reading and working with children.” The liaison chapter will read aloud for an hour, starting with picture books for the younger children to selected sections within chapter books for older children and intermediate readers. Each member will take turns reading every ten minutes. “I hope this will let people who live in the Viera area know that we’re there,” Kerness said. “They might appreciate having pre-service teachers on hand to help their children make book selections and to read aloud.” With the holiday season being in full swing, members have teamed up with Rolling Readers Space Coast hoping people who attend the event will donate new books to the 14-year-old literacy program. “From events like this, we hope that children and families discover the joy of reading, both independently and together,” said Susan Thomas, executive director of Rolling Readers Space Coast. “Perhaps they will ind a new favorite family book.” This event will be one of many community projects Kappa Delta Pi plans to host and will continue the project in the future across Brevard County. “The group will collectively decide on what our next project will be,” Kerness said. “It will be an educational theme and one of the core adjectives is to support literacy.”

The journey of a Christmas tree

VIERA VOICE Darrell Woehler

Have you ever wondered where a Christmas tree comes from? BY KEN PREVITI The journey of a Christmas tree, from a seedling to the fully-grown one in your home, is an adventure. The thought of taking a horsedrawn sleigh through the snow to Grandma’s house to ind a Christmas tree in the woods was never a reality for most people. The actual journey of a Christmas tree is complex, interesting and fun to follow. There are about half a billion Christmas trees growing on America’s Christmas tree farms. Rarely do Christmas trees grow wild in the open forests. Trees grown in the wild usually lack the beautiful tree shape and health that

people demand. Christmas trees are the crop of choice for about 21,000 American farmers and their families on 500,000 acres that produce a crop of 30 million Christmas trees annually. Agricultural college educated farmers carefully plant three seedlings per tree yield, anticipating a salable crop in four to seven years. Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, and Wisconsin are top producers. Oregon produces 7,000,000 per year; Florida produces 13,000. The climate, soil preparation, pest and weed control, fertilization and suficient water are monitored year round.

In September, farmers take orders from third-party sales and distribution centers. Since the top selling Christmas trees are Balsam ir, Douglas ir, Fraser ir, Scotch pine, Virginia pine and white pine, distribution centers often combine trees from multiple states on giant semi-trucks for delivery to stores, churches and local fund-raising groups. Some small farms keep track of their own crops, but they cannot always provide each desired tree and size. Freshly cut, recyclable trees are environmentally friendlier than petroleum based artiicial ones — in spite of claims to the contrary. However its journey occurred, Christmas trees are part of our collective memories and our Merry Christmases. VV

Drop off your Toys for Tots at Suntree and Space Station Self Storage SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Space Station Self Storage and Suntree Self Storage are dropoff points for the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots Program this year. You can drop off new, unwrapped toys until Thursday, Dec. 9 at Space Station Self Storage, 3100 Murrell Rd. in Rockledge or Suntree Self Storage, 7165 N. Wickham Rd. in Melbourne. Space Station Storage is participating in the Reindeer Dash and Jingle Bell Walk on Dec. 4, 2010. The event will be held at Viera Regional Park. For more information, call

day tradition, which includes a 12-foot tree dotted with sparkling little lights — a Christmas fairytale coming to life right in the heart of Suntree. The association expects about 150 people to attend the growing holiday event, which began more than 10 years ago. Before the tree lighting casts its magical explosion of lights on Interlachen Park, many theme related activities, such as face painting by Santa’s elves and holiday craft making, will be on hand to keep children entertained and to pass time until light festivities begin. Refreshments will also be

available for attendees. The event wouldn’t be complete without the guest of honor, Santa himself, who will arrive on a Florida-style sleigh ready to take photos with children while listening to their lists of wants, needs and the must-haves of the upcoming holiday season. Children will also be able to take photos with Santa. Although the full event kicks off at 3:30 p.m., the live Christmas tree will illuminate around dusk and stay throughout December for people who won’t be able to attend the actual lighting. It will be taken down the irst week of January — until next year, of course. VV

BY GEORGE WHITE The Space Coast Symphony will bring its holiday tradition to Viera with a free performance of Messiah to be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3 at St. John the Evangelist Church. Though the performance is typically in Merritt Island, the new location will give Viera residents a chance to participate in the holiday sing-along, an oratorio composed in just 24 days by George Friedrich Handel during the summer of 1741. “It’s just a very popular

piece and when (Handel) wrote it, it took on a life of its own. It’s really a beautiful piece of music that is timeless,’’ said Aaron Collins, artistic director and conductor of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. It has become common practice since Handel’s death to perform all or part of Messiah during Advent, the preparatory period of the Christmas season. Messiah choruses, which include Glory of the Lord, Thou that tellest Good Tidings, For Unto Us a Child is Born, Glory to God in the Highest, His Yoke is Easy, Behold the Lamb of God and Lift up your heads. Messiah is written in the classical style and is more challenging for the voices than the instrumentalists, Collins said.

The Viera performance won’t be a performance of the full orchestra due to space limitations. Rather, it will be a chamber-size orchestra of about 25 members instead of 85 members. “All the choir parts will be

Judy and Jerry Allender share the award for Outstanding Philanthropists at the Space Coast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ luncheon.

BY KEN PREVITI The Space Coast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals honored those who contributed unselishly to Brevard in 2010 by presenting National Philanthropy Day Awards in November. During the luncheon celebration held in Watersong’s banquet facility, awards were granted to the Space Coast Chapter’s Outstanding

Philanthropic Corporation, Outstanding Philanthropist and Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser. This year’s event was a noteworthy occasion because it marked the 50th anniversary of the AFP and the 25th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day worldwide. The Women’s Center in Brevard, the Brevard Zoo, the Florida Institute of Technology, the Brevard Achievement Center, Devereux of Florida, the Health First Foundation, Brevard Community College, and several other organizations had tables, representatives and guests in attendance at the awards ceremony. Tom Vice, corporate vice president and technical services president of Northrop Grumman Corporation, was the keynote speaker to his fellow community philanthropists and organizations. “As community leaders we must note the impact we have on people’s lives. Today’s corporations want to know where the money goes. What is it used for? We all know that our contributions, especially in education, help determine our country’s future,” he said. With audience members as highly vaunted as this, the determination of award winners was not an easy one, but the high caliber was assured. “This day provides an opportunity to relect on the meaning of giving and all that has been made possible through philanthropy,” said Jane McCallum, president of the AFP’s Space Coast Chapter. Quest Elementary honors the U.S. veterans BY DARRELL WOEHLER Perhaps there is a good reason that the ifth grade class at Quest Elementary School in Viera are the students tasked with the assignment to make posters of U.S. military veterans. It takes a few years in school, exposure to the modern-day news cycle and knowing someone who has served in the military to be able to begin to comprehend the meaning of war, ighting and dying. For some people, it takes more than a few years— it takes a lifetime, and then one still is likely not to understand the

full meaning. But for all the youngsters in the ifth grade at Quest Elementary, making a Veterans Day poster of someone they knew of that served in the U. S. military was perhaps the beginning of this attempt to understand. Ranging from a friend, grandfather, uncle or aunt, father or mother, these ifth grade students made over 110 posters which lined the front of the school to show their appreciation for those that have served. A prior ifth grade teacher, Marie Leaman, started this project about 7 years

Also making these special posters were Holly Yoho, for her grandfather, Frank Cauield, of the army, and Keith Happel for his father, Edward Happel Jr., who served in the U. S. Viera football headed in the ‘right direction’ BY CARL KOTALA A five-game losing streak to close out the season certainly stings, but the Viera Hawks had plenty to be proud of for the 2010 football season. Not only did Viera (3-7) set a school record for most wins in a season, the Hawks showed signs that they are starting to turn the corner. “I think it’s definitely headed in the right direction,” Hawks coach Paul Frazier said. “We’re trying to instill that pride in the school and in the community. The rest is going to come. But you’ve

got to have that foundation. I think it’s definitely headed in the right direction.” Junior running back Jon Kenney led the Hawks in rushing this season with 549 yards on 138 carriers with three touchdowns. He was followed by senior Jacques Williams, who had 172 yards on 49 carries and also ran for three scores. Senior quarterback Tyler Corns actually led the Hawks with four rushing touchdowns while also completing 137 of 281 passes for 1,683 yards with 14 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Junior Joseph Sanchez led Viera

with 37 receptions for 422 yards and a touchdown. He also had 69 yards rushing on 23 carries. Another junior, Kyle Smith, led Viera in receiving yards with 494 on 35 receptions. He also caught six touchdown passes, including an 80-yarder to beat Satellite in the game‘s closing moments. Senior Shaun Applewhite caught four touchdown passes. Among the things the Hawks must do in order to take the next step, be more consistent, take better care of the ball and do a better job on third down both offensively and defensively.

Viera boys golf finishes 10th at state BY CARL KOTALA

The Viera High boys golf team came in 10th at the Class 2A state tournament held at Julliette Falls in Dunnellon last month. Trey Valentine tied for eighth individually after shooting 75 and 70 for a total of 145 over the twoday event. Anthony Skirk, who was 1-under through 26 holes, tied for 30th with a 7279-151. Tyler Hashimoto shot a 3-over 75 on the second day despite injuring a finger only

hours before he teed off. Of course, the Hawks couldn’t have reached state play without a strong performance in the regionals. Viera won its first-ever regional title on its home course, Duran Golf Club. Valentine, a senior, shot a school-record 67 that day, a round that featured six birdies and one eagle. It was the second consecutive trip to the state tournament for the Hawks, who will be looking to stretch that number to three next season. VV

SOMEONE

Ruth Bentley

Words to live by “You get so much more from people you help than you can possibly give.”

For Ruth Bentley, volunteering has always been a way of life. She grew up surrounded by helping hands, as her mother was a nurse aid for the Red Cross and her father served as associate national director of the Boys and Girls Club of America. Ruth began working with the Red Cross as a young woman volunteering in bloodmobiles. Ruth and her husband, Jim, have provided Brevard County residents safety and comfort through hurricanes as shelter managers, a job that requires immense organization skills and training. In August 2008, during Tropical Storm Fay, which looded more than 80 local neighborhoods, people came to Ruth’s shelter in shorts and T-shirts. To provide comfort, Ruth sent staff to the local Walmart to gather blankets. In addition to her generosity with volunteerism, “Ruth is also very generous with her hugs,” according to her friend and fellow Red Cross volunteer, Jane Bowden. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done? Camping above the Arctic Circle with my family.

Dij Pacarro

Words to live by God has given everyone a special gift- it’s up to us to discover and share that gift.

Dij Pacarro’s passion is painting, but not with the conventional supplies. With fabric and thread she creates her pictures, gravitating toward bright colors and allowing her love of nature and travel to serve as inspirations. Pacarro calls herself a iber artist because along with the quilter title comes the thought of grandmothers and bed quilts, and her work is far from that. Pacarro’s pieces can be found in the Art Gallery of Viera and the Art and Antique Studio. Her art is inluenced by her childhood spent in Honolulu, Hawaii. “I practically lived at the beach,” she says. “I was a surfer girl.” Pacarro graduated from the same high school as President Obama, where she also met her husband. “We’ve been married for 39 years, and he truly is my best friend,” she says. What can always be found in your refrigerator? Wine.

What is your favorite indulgence? Watching the sunset over Owasco Lake in Auburn, New York.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done? I worked on a Native American reservation in Arizona as a youth group leader. We ixed up homes on the reservation, and it was a really neat experience.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Raising two wonderful boys with my husband.

What is your favorite indulgence? Sitting on the patio with a good novel and enjoying the outdoors.

If you could meet any historical igure, who would it be? Clara Barton.

What is your greatest accomplishment? A good marriage.

If you were a superhero, which power would you have? I would be able to fulill other people’s wishes.

If you could go back into any period in history, where would you go? I’d like to be in the pioneer days. We have so much done for us electronically; it would be neat to just live off the land.

If you could teach the world one lesson, what would it be? To honor and love each other.

If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it? I would provide training for volunteers throughout the country.

What one word would friends say describes you? Fun.

What little-known fact about you would surprise casual acquaintances? I was my high school women’s ping-pong champ.

What little-known fact about you would surprise casual acquaintances? I was a wild teenager.

Ten holiday movies

to watch during this vacation BY ANGELA SMITH The holiday season is quickly approaching, bringing with it cold weather, busy preparations, packed parking lots and school vacations. Instead of racing to the mall, take time this year to rediscover the love for holiday movies with family and friends. The most beloved holiday movies are about showing compassion, appreciating loved ones and helping others while inding the true meaning to the season. They’re the movies that have lasted the test of time to keep coming back year after year. Here’s a list of some of our favorite holiday movies: The Christmas Story (1983) This classic movie revolves around Ralphie, who wants nothing more than a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas. He is facing resistance from his parents, teachers and even Santa himself. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) A children’s movie that tells the story of Rudolph, a reindeer whose nose lights up. He’s looking for a place where he belongs after continuously getting bullied for his big red nose. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) A television classic special, Charlie Brown becomes the director of the school holiday pageant. He inds himself disappointed by the commercialization of the holidays and searches for the true meaning of it all. Miracle on 34th Street (1947) A heart-warming

holiday movie for the family about believing in someone even when everyone else denies his existence. A story where one little girl proves the existence of Santa Claus is indeed real despite any hurdles she must overcome to do so. A White Christmas (1954) This story is ďż˝illed with some great songs — including the classic “White Christmas.â€? The movie is about a successful song-and-dance team that becomes romantically involved with a sister act and teams up to save the failing Vermont inn of the former commanding general. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966 & 2000) Based on the book by the famous Dr. Seuss, this animated ďż˝ilm tells the story of a bitter and grumpy Grinch who hatches a plan to steal Christmas from the Whos of Whoville. A Christmas Carol (1938) A classic story about Ebenezer Scrooge, a business man who learns a life-changing lesson about compassion, giving and love. Home Alone (1990) The comedy allows viewers to imagine what life would be like for a few days over the Christmas holiday for a nine year old, named Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, who outwits, outsmarts and outlasts two thieves. The Santa Claus (1994) A fun, family tale about a guy

who accidentally kills Kris Kringle, then has to take his job as Santa, unwillingly at irst — allowing him to rediscover the possibilities of State-of-the-Art Equipment & Facility

Christmas and why the holiday is so important to people around the world, including his own son. National Lampoon’s

Christmas Vacation (1989) A comical story that follows the Griswold family as plans for a big Christmas predictably turns into a big disaster. VV

Consign and Design fits downsizing needs BY MEAGAN MCGONE

To our current patients as well as our future patients:

As the holiday seasons are just around the corner, we wanted to wish you and your family a very happy and safe holiday season. We also wanted to take a few moments to remind you that with the end of the year coming, this does not just bring the wonderful holidays that we all enjoy, but a reminder that for those with insurance, your benefits for this calendar year may be running out if you have not maximized this by now. As you are aware, if you do not utilize your yearly maximum, you will lose what you may have left at the end of this year. As for those patients who have the Tax Deferred-Flexible Spending Accounts at work, you need to maximize these as well. As you can see, we can help you with both of these by utilizing our practice in all facets of your dental health care needs. We warmly welcome all new patients as well! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office and inquire how we may help you. We want to encourage you to call soon, so that we may be able to accommodate you and your needs before this year ends.

It will be sponsored by the Women of Temple Israel. Each family is asked to bring a Chanukiah, a special Menorah for Chanukah, which will be placed on a long table. They are all lit together, and then Latkes will be served! Before the Menorathon, Temple Israel will host the Israeli Delegation for the Sister City Program between Beit Shemesh and Cocoa. The Israeli dance troupe from Beit Shemesh will be entertaining at the Shabbat Services at 6 p.m. For more information about the festivities, please visit www.tiofbrevard.com. VV

Local Space Coast golf courses and hotels have again partnered with the United States Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots program for the 2010 Christmas Holidays. The USMC Toys for Tots goal is to help less fortunate children throughout our community experience the joy of Christmas, which will play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources — our children. The FSCGA has organized a program that will offer a chance to win a valuable prize for each donated toy. The prizes range from free golf rounds for four and free hotel nights at the FSCGA’s Member properties. The members, Crowne Plaza Melbourne Beach; Cocoa Beach Country Club; Hampton Inn – Titusville; Duran Golf Club; Hilton Hotel Cocoa Beach; Viera East Golf Club; Holiday Inn – Viera; Walkabout Golf Club; and Wedgeield Golf Club will have Toys for Tots drop boxes at their facilities and the entry cards for a chance to win the wonderful prizes while making a great experience for a child in need.
