Tigers out to prove they shouldn’t be overlooked

BY CARL KOTALA When it comes to discussing their outlook on this year’s soccer season, the Holy Trinity boys and girls teams have a similar view. The boys feel overlooked. The girls feel like they’re the underdog. And oh, they can’t wait to prove people wrong. “Honestly, with these guys here, I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people,” new Holy Trinity boys coach Adrian Moreno said. “They’re a young group, and there are a lot of new faces on the team that were JV players (last year), but I think they’re going to surprise a lot of teams in the county, and a lot of teams outside of the county. “People only think we have a couple players, like Ed (Marr) and Ryan

(Mozer).” The Tigers graduated nine seniors from last year’s team, including top scorer Danny Lynch. But any idea that the Tigers will have trouble scoring this season was surely erased after the team defeated Melbourne Central Catholic 5-0 in the season opener. “People thought we wouldn’t have any goal threats and I feel like putting five past MCC — after losing 4-1 to them last year — was a great testament to how hard we’ve worked and how overall this season,” Marr said. “I feel like we can go really far.” In addition to Marr and Mozer, the Tigers have been getting strong performances from Walker Johnson, Brock Shoultz and a new backline of Jackson Mariani, Lucas Dutra and Ty Schrumpf in

front of goalkeeper James Linnabary. Holy Trinity will be in a new, much tougher district this season that features, among others, West Shore, Edgewood and MCC. “I think we’re underdogs a little bit,” girls senior goalkeeper Payton Yates

said following a scoreless tie against MCC. “We’re a small team. We’re not physically big. … When the other teams look at us, I’m sure they’re like, ‘Oh, it’s HT.’ But we have a lot of heart, more heart than the other teams, which is why we do so well in games

like this.” With a talented roster that includes Yates, Kailey Dunne, Amelia Anello, Kendall Harrison, Julia McCarthy, Julia McNatt, Aislin Scully, Erin Sherden, Emerson Euziere, Averie Schweitzer, Allie Chamberland, Lani Watt, Bianca Fontanin, Braelyn Wahy and Sky Godfrey the Tigers will certainly be a tough matchup for anyone they face. Because if the early season is any indication, this is a team that communicates well together and is willing to work hard. “I think we definitely have a strong mentality this year to win,” Yates said. “There’s a lot of desire on this team. I’m happy about that because it’s hard to be on a team when no one cares. But everyone’s really happy to be here.” VV

Viera soccer teams motivated for deep postseason runs BY CARL KOTALA The Hawks are hungry. That’s the phrase that best describes the Viera High School girls and boys soccer teams as they head into the season, each with aspirations of making a deep playoff run. “We have a lot of young players and that fire is new, and it’s fresh,” senior goalkeeper Jordan Spira said.

“They’re all very excited about it.” Viera’s girls, who have won two state championships, not only boast a talented starting group, but they have the kind of depth it takes to add another trophy to their collection. The Hawks (3-0) got their season off to a strong start, including a 1-0 victory against arch-rival Melbourne.

Junior Talorie Crafton, who missed last season with a fractured hip, scored the only goal in that one, but the Hawks got solid play up and down the line — particularly in the back from Caroline Boston, Lauren Mieczkowski and goalkeepers Spira (a tricaptain) and Megan Cook. Other top players include seniors Taylor Collins, Johanna Webb and tricaptains Catherine Koegel and Madelyn Rosario; juniors Savannah Oxley, Piper McHenry, Reese Pulliam, Serena Zarzana, Allie Worley, Amanda Vitaliano and Ariana Valentin; sophomores Mai Jensen, Morgan Brubaker; Alexandra Rowe and Victoria Wehner; and freshmen Taylor George and Kaley Vitaliano. “I’m really positive about it. It’s a really good squad, and not just the starting 11 or the girls that played today. I think we have good squad depth. I just spoke to them about the girls that didn’t get much time, or didn’t get in. I told them we’re going to need them throughout the season if we’re going to win the Cape Coast Conference, if we’re going to have the ambition of getting to the state final and winning the state final.” Viera’s boys, meanwhile,

also were off to a strong, 3-0 start despite missing key players such as Mads Jensen, Kia Mohajeri, Nyles Lockridge and Tibor Susanj to injury. In their absence, the Hawks were getting strong play from Stephen McHale, Zach Nielsen, Patrick Murtha, Evan Kirrane, Kyle Hupfer, Alex McCormick, Conner Floyd, John Anasa and keeper Andrew Sanger — just to name a few. Hawks coach Nick Robinson said that says a lot about his team and how it’s approaching this season. “In previous years, I want

to say we’ve maybe been a bit too content,” Robinson said. “This year, it’s a team that’s hungry. We want to win. And they’re prepared to do anything to win. They’re working for each other. “That’s the most important thing this year — we’ve got a team-first mentality. Hopefully, we can continue that throughout the year.” McHale reiterated the Hawks have big plans. “We just want to go far, win games and show everybody what Viera can do,” he said. VV

Former Viera soccer stars enjoy playing at Eastern Florida State College BY CARL KOTALA They made a name for themselves on the soccer field at Viera High School. Now, they’re doing it again at Eastern Florida State College. Former Hawks JJ Bryant and Emily Bodi might have come into one of the country’s best junior college soccer programs in different ways, but they’re both very happy they did. “I’ve loved it,” Bodi said. “Coming out of high school, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but this has been the best decision I could have made in my circumstances. “Playing with girls I know, meeting girls from all over the world, it’s been an awesome experience.” Whereas Bodi has been at EFSC for two years, Bryant’s college career started at the University of North Florida. She came home after her freshman year because of a family matter and contacted Titans coach Jeff Carr to see if any roster spots were

available. “I’m very thankful,” Bryant said. “I think God has a plan and this is part of it. Being here, I’ve met a lot of great people from our team and other teams and the support staff and coaches. I’m very thankful for everything they’ve taught me on and off the field.”

Bodi and Bryant were part of Viera’s 2016 team that won its second consecutive Class 4A state championship and were ranked No. 1 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. Now, they are playing on the EFSC back line and part of a starting lineup that features a number of local standouts. That list includes sophomore Alexis Peri (Satellite High), sophomore Megan Miller (Melbourne), freshman and Viera resident Fran Espinoza (Edgewood) and freshman Amiah Sirino (Melbourne). The Titans went through the regular-season with a 140-0 record and were the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship tournament, which was held at Orlando Health Stadium on the EFSC campus last month. “I think it’s just such a unique experience, to be hosting it right here in our backyard,” Bodi said of the national tournament. “A lot

of our friends and family that watched us play in high school, here they are (again), and here we are representing Brevard (County). It’s just awesome.” That’s especially true for Bryant, who said her parents never got a chance to see her play college soccer at UNF. This season, both the Bryant and Bodi families have gotten a chance to not only see the girls play, but play well. “We are thrilled that we have JJ and Emily on our team from one of the best high school girls soccer programs in the state,” Carr said. “They are winners and are great leaders on our team. They are one of the reasons we have done so well this year.” Both women said they were keeping their options open for where they will go next.

The NJCAA tournament was still going on at press time. The Titans had advanced out of pool play and were about to face Tyler, Texas in the national semifinals. If the Titans win a national championship, it would give Bryant and Bodi one more huge accomplishment in their careers. “State championships and national rings, too,” Bryant said. “Hopefully, we can get another one this year here.” Should the Titans go on to win the national title, it wouldn’t be the first championship Bodi has celebrated on that field. “My freshman year, I got pulled up to varsity and we played on this field to win the state championship,” she said. “It would be pretty cool, almost full circle to come back (and win a national title).” VV

VHS food pantry will make Christmas brighter for needy families

BY CARL KOTALA Nearly a dozen Viera High School families will have a good Christmas thanks to the generosity of their own classmates and the local

community. “We have about 11 families who have come to me and said they’re in need,” Viera High social worker Sarina Coello said. “We have sponsors

through people in the Viera community, Beta Club, cheerleading and SGA. They will provide Christmas dinners and gifts for those families.” And it doesn’t end there, either. After realizing after last Christmas that there were Viera High families in need, the school opened up a food pantry and also began collecting donated clothes and household items. “This year, we wanted to make sure families knew early on that we’re here for them,” Coello said. “Hopefully, we will not miss anybody. And if we have extra this year, as far as being able to provide more dinners than we have families for, we will be able to help some of the elementary schools that have told us that they’re in need.” Coello recalled a time last year, when a family from a local elementary school had a house fire and was in need of sheets and blankets. It wasn’t long after the word got out that those items were donated. “I love the way the Viera community comes together,” Coello said. “They’re so helpful. Endeavor (Elementary School) will tell me that, ‘We need these size clothes,’ or ‘We need these size sneakers’ and families will bring them in brand new

for me. “If they tell me there’s a need and I put it out there, the Viera community is pretty awesome with that.” Viera teacher and co-Beta Club adviser Dave Formanek said donated items are sorted through each day by as many as three to five students who donate their time to stock the pantry’s growing number of shelves. Sophomore Dennis Roscoe said he enjoys taking part in something that matters. He has been known to volunteer his time between three and four days a week. “Mostly, my time out of

school consists of doing homework or nothing at all,” Roscoe said. “Doing something that’s helping people … makes me feel a lot better about myself.” The generosity doesn’t end when the school year does. Formanek said the school still gets donations during the summer and Coello said that if a family emails her to tell her they are in need, she will make herself available to help. As for supplies for the holidays, the pantry could always use more canned goods, frozen vegetables and fresh fruit. Students helping students and a community showing it cares … it doesn’t get any better than that. “I just think the fact that Viera High School and the community at large has really rallied around this … like the Facebook mom’s page has gone crazy over this,” Formanek said. “Our newly formed PTO is starting to get involved. “We’ve got kids that come in regularly, almost every day, with bags of stuff to donate. It’s awesome that we can do this for the kids that attend our school. As a teacher, there’s nothing worse than learning that one of your students is hungry, or doesn’t have a home, or a bed to sleep in. “You don’t think of Viera as being a school with those kinds of needs, but we do have students that are in that situation. I’m just glad we can help those kids that need it here at our school, and I’m even more excited that because we have so much extra, we can also help some of the other schools around town.” VV

New Viera elementary school will open in August 2020 BY WENDY SCHEURING There was no road. No water. Just land. Empty land in Viera. South of Wickham Road. West of I-95. Quest Elementary School in Viera had reached 117 percent capacity, so the school board and Brevard Public Schools decided to do something about it. Thus, the idea and conception of a new elementary school in Viera came to life. “For the first time, a school was built a year early,” said Matt Susin, the School Board member for District 4. “It’s insane. But, we answered the call to the community.” “Sue Hann (Deputy Superintendent of facilities and construction) and Dr. Mark Mullins (Superintendent of Brevard

putting on the roofing panels.” Drone footage of the construction process is updated weekly on the website at brevardschools.org/ Page/15422. “Architectural models of the interior of the school and a virtual tour of the inside of the school” also will soon be included, wrote Hann in an email. The construction of the new Viera elementary school, according to Susin via text message, was roughly less than $22 million and was paid debt-free with impact fees. “Which is how it’s supposed to be.” The new school building will accommodate up to 970 students, with an anticipated 600 students attending upon the opening of its doors at the onset of the 2020-2021 school year. Adrienne Schwab,

“The new security design is an upgrade from our existing schools and is arguably the best in the state. We’re also the first school to have a lactation room. The school will be getting an award by the Florida Association of Lactation Consultants when the school opens,” Susin added. The school also will

feature a separate 10-foot wide golf cart path, accessible from Stadium Parkway. At the present time, the school will only have a hard boundary for the surrounding non-built-out areas of Viera. “Manatee is at nearly 100 percent and Suntree is at 95 percent. We don’t want to take away from families

who want to stay at their home school. We don’t want to rezone. The first step is that we’re taking care of our people,” said Susin, who is looking for input from the community. “This will be up for community discussion for the next two-and-a-half months,” he said. VV

Is it true that Varicose Veins are a sign of a medical issue? Yes. Please do not ignore signs of leg varicose veins. If you notice bulging veins, you have a significant medical condition. Bulging indicates a chronic medical condition. Constant dilation causes blood to stop blood flow back through the legs, leading to further damage. This includes swelling with tissue damage, legs swelling, aching legs, permanent skin pigmentation changes, along with ulcers.

Public Schools) made it happen. We board members come up with ideas. But it takes the staff to do it,” Susin said. “And, not many companies like WhartonSmith can knock it out. They have been working seven days a week.” “We’re trying to get ahead of the schedule as much as possible,” said Johnathan Wilkes, the project executive operations, management support for Wharton-Smith, Inc. “The building has been topped out and we’re filling in the structure to get it dried in. With the holidays approaching, Quest Elementary School students are doing their best to spread some cheer to foster children in need. Quest’s National Elementary Honor Society, sponsored by teacher Tracy Lally, is working with the Friends of Children of Brevard on a holiday gift drive to help supply gifts to underprivileged children throughout the local community. The foster children have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect. A Christmas tree was placed in the lobby of the school with cards that provide information about the child along with one Christmas wish item. There were 200 tags on the tree the day it was put up. It wasn’t long before all of those tags had been taken. More tags have since been added to the tree.

Seven Viera High band students selected to All-State BY CARL KOTALA It was the news he and the rest of his Viera High School bandmates had been waiting for. But when it came time to announce who had been selected All-State, senior Ryan Frier was home sick. “Someone texted me that I made it and I was freaking out,” Frier said. “I didn’t know it was that day. I was sick. “That was a good day. I wasn’t sick for too long after that. I’m pretty sure that helped.” Frier was one of seven Hawks selected to this year’s Florida All-State Ensembles, which consists of select band, orchestra and choir members from around the state. All-State is both lengthy and strenuous. “We have to play all 12 major scales, and there are two different excerpts — a fast, technical one and a slow, lyrical one,” Reed said. “We get the excerpts in May, so we have the summer to work on them. There’s also a sight reading.” A recorded audition session was held at Edgewood High School in September and sent off to judges. “When they’re judging your audio tape, there are four rounds,” Reed said. “They focus on different things like right notes, your musicality and then your tone. “They keep narrowing down the 700 clarinets that tried out until they get down to about 20.” Frier and Reed said they are looking forward to the concert. “After I made it, I looked it up and now my excitement is going through the roof,” Reed said. “It’s going to be really fun. We’re playing this one piece called, ‘Come Sunday.’ “It’s more of a jazz piece, but it’s very exhilarating. It’s very exciting.” V V

Shipley, a church organist, took up a soloist’s invitation to join her in a watercolor class. She loved the medium’s unpredictability. In 1992, as a full-time artist, Shipley opened a gallery in Johnson City. Shipley moved to Florida in 2003 after her husband died. A few years later, she met Bud, her partner, who encouraged her to show her art. “I’ve gotten into figurative abstract. It gives me a sense of freedom. It lets my inner vision come through.” The influence of her musical background is evident in many of her paintings — now, mostly

She hadn’t known anyone until she joined singles groups. “My first music jazz piece, ‘Midnight Jazz Gang,’ is a tribute to all of the friends I’ve made,” Shipley said. Viewers can almost hear the piano keys, musical notes and instruments found in her art. That mood also is captured in a painting she’s currently doing of Sybil Gage, a singer at Heidi’s in Cocoa Beach. There are subtle messages in her paintings. In, “Let’s Talk About It,” a majestic snowy egret peers down, at what might be its next meal, and a frog seems to implore the bird to reconsider. “I like to put interesting visions in my paintings for people to think about. Maybe, they can relate,” Shipley said. VV

Make way for more temptations in Viera BY MARIA SONNENBERG Guess what? There is more building going on in Viera, and along with the new structures will be more opportunities to enjoy the good life. Folks in the market for luxury cars might want to wait to buy until April 2020, when Brevard’s first Acura dealer opens its doors adjacent to Lexus of Melbourne on Bromley Drive in Viera. “The demographics are right,” said Jim Crockett, general manager of the new 20,000-plus square-foot showroom, sales and service center. “It will be a stand-alone, state-of-the-art showroom that will offer everything from financing to full service,” added Crockett. Crockett and owner T.R. Page, who also is owner of

Lexus of Melbourne, expect to sell approximately 100 cars a month at the new dealership that will employ a staff of 35 to 40. The project broke ground in late October; a mid-April 2020 opening is planned. Acura, the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Honda, did not have a presence in Brevard. The success of its flagship vehicle, the Legend, spurred fellow Japanese automobile manufacturers Toyota and Nissan to launch their own luxury brands, Lexus and Infiniti. Crockett believes there is no better time for Brevard to add Acura to its stable of auto showrooms. “The company is introducing some very exciting models,” he said. With Lexus of Melbourne as a neighbor, the new Acura dealership will

2020. On Aug. 30, Judge Paulk denied the homeowners’ motion for a temporary or emergency injunction against the VECDD. The Jan. 7 hearing is on the permanent injunction lawsuit. In the lawsuit, the homeowners list 23 allegations against the VECDD and its adoption of the resolution to purchase the bond. Among the allegations are: “There is no logical relationship between the proposed projects and the benefit to the real property, as there are two other golf courses within a five-mile radius of the Viera East Golf Course. Further illustrating the speculative nature of the probability of increased value to the property and lessens the unique benefit to the subject properties.” “There is no indication within the (2019 Project) Plan that the proposed renovations to the Viera East Clubhouse are necessary to the extent that the expenditure is justified related to the assessments levied against the properties within the district.” “The proposed tax lacks the necessary elements to qualify as a special assessment without further evidence or indication of the correlation and proportion of the tax to the perceived benefit to the property.” The lawsuit also claims that the proposed 2019 VECDD project violates Florida Statute 190, by improperly classifying the tax as a special assessment without adequate qualification. In addition, the suit alleges that the proposed project “fails to illustrate the immediacy and depth

required for the repairs and renovations to be funded by the proposed bond issuance.” In court papers filed Sept. 6 by VECDD attorney Jack C. McElroy, VECDD claims the lawsuit should be dismissed because the complaints: Failed to adequately allege the standing of the plaintiffs to bring the lawsuit. Failed to attach the relevant documents referenced in the complaint likely because with documents proves the inability of the plaintiffs to bring these causes of action. Fails to state a cause of action for the relief sought. Despite a majority of residents that voiced their opposition during a public hearing July 25 in the multi-purpose room of the Faith Lutheran Church at 5550 Faith Drive in Viera, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the 20-year bond that will see more than $11 million put toward improvements at the Viera East Golf Club and golf course. These enhancements include: • Clubhouse renovations, including a banquet facility at a cost of $2.9 million. • A new irrigation system for $2 million. • Bunker renovations for $1.1 million. In addition to the $9 million in expenses, homeowners also will pay nearly $5 million more in interest. In order to pay off the $11 million bond, Viera East homeowners will have to foot the bill. The assessment will take effect after the VECDD’s water management assessment bond is paid off in 2023. Homeowners in Six Mile Creek, Crane Creek, Cross Creek and some homeowners in the south section of the Indian River Colony Club are not affected by the bond. There are more than 4,200 households in the VECDD. Of that total, 791 houses are on the golf course. Viera East Golf Club includes the communities of Aberdeen, Addington, Ashton, Blackheath, Brightwood, Canterbury, Collingtree, Durban Park, Oaklefe, Parkstone, Stratford Place, and Woodhall. Viera East Golf Club is an 18-hole course that opened in 1994, and the club projects 54,000 rounds will be played there for the fiscal year ending in September. Created in 1991, the VECDD is accountable for the development,

operation, and upkeep of infrastructure corresponding to the golfing direction, an 85-lake stormwater gadget, conservation spaces, paved trails and sidewalks, and Woodside Park. The VECDD is a local government entity authorized by Chapter 190 of the Florida Statutes as amended, and created by ordinance of Brevard County as an alternative method of planning, acquiring, operating and maintaining communitywide improvements in planned communities. A CDD provides the “solution” to Florida’s need to provide valuable community infrastructure generated by growth, ultimately without overburdening other governments and their taxpaying residents. The VECDD is organized similar to other local governments in Florida in that the legislative body is composed of a five-member board known as the Board of Supervisors. The board establishes the policy of the district in accordance with Florida law. The district encompasses 2,825 acres east of Interstate 95 from Wickham Highway northward into Rockledge. VV

BY ERNEST ARICO For the second time in less than five months, the Board of Supervisors of the Viera East Community Development District unanimously passed a resolution to purchase an $11.2 million bond for golf course and park improvements. About 125 people attended the public hearing that was held prior to the board’s vote on the bond resolution. The hearing was held Nov. 21 at the Faith Lutheran Church at 5550 Faith Drive in Viera. The second public hearing was held because of a pending lawsuit against the VECDD. Four Viera East homeowners and commercial property owners — Robert Dale, Paul F. Daley, Steven Colasinski and Trisha Smith — filed a lawsuit seeking a permanent injunction restraining the VECDD from purchasing the bond. That lawsuit hearing is scheduled for Jan. 7 before 18th Judicial Circuit Court Judge George Paulk in Titusville. Prior to the public’s comments about the bond proposal, three presentations were made by the board. One of the key

presentations was made by Henry Fishkind, director of PFM Asset Management/ Public Financial Management. Fishkind reported on his company’s assessment methodology report and study on the impact of VECDD’s proposed projects. He told the audience homeowners and commercial property owners will see an increase in their property values once the project is completed. “Based on my study, residents will see about a $7 per square foot increase,” he said. “That’s about a 5 percent increase in their property value.”

VECDD’s water management assessment bond is paid off in 2023. “The total projected gross annual assessment that the district will levy and collect against the Viera East property owner is anticipated to be $241.15,” Showe said. Mossing’s report concerned the potential interest rate the VECDD will receive once the bond is approved. She said the interest rate on July 25, when the board first passed the resolution was 3.01 percent. Today, she said, the rate is 3½ percent. “It will cost the board an additional $95,000,” she said. $ It’s the thought that counts but the taste matters, too.

The board and residents also heard presentations from Jason M. Showe, VECDD’s district manager, and Rhonda Mossing, a partner with MBS Capital Markets, LLC. Showe outlined new assessment proceedings that afford the board an opportunity to consider additional and supplemental information on the record with respect to the proposed benefit special assessments and bond issuance. In order to pay off the $11 million bond, Viera East homeowners will have to foot the bill. The assessment will take effect after the

Senior, Boomer Expo entertains visitors from all over Brevard County

BY R. NORMAN MOODY

Senior Life’s Boomer Bash Senior Expo drew more than 600 visitors to its Fly Me to the Boom event last month at the Hilton Rialto Place in Melbourne. Seniors and boomers from throughout the Space Coast were drawn to the exciting, informative and entertaining expo Nov. 8.

Visitors came for the information, expositions and experience and stayed for the entertaining music of the Rat Pack era that included a singalong. Some even danced to the music of Frank Sinatra. Some seniors said the expo offered them a few hours out of their homes for the wealth of information that they could collect in one place in a short time. For many, it also was

a time to catch up with old friends. “We make the themes of our expos entertaining and informative,” said Jill Blue, the CEO of Bluewater Creative Group, the parent company of Senior Life, which sponsored the expo. “It’s nostalgic. It was fun.” The expo offered booths with information on day trips, travel, retirement options,

Some years are better than others. The year of 2019 has been a challenging one, but I believe that challenges build us stronger — no matter the criticism that may accompany difficult times. My dad has a good story about that. One evening, my dad was driving home from work and suddenly, on that one-lane road, his car broke down. It was raining. He didn’t know what to do. There was no cell phone at the time; no way to call AAA or a towing company. A line of headlights flashing formed behind my dad’s car. With a dead engine and not knowing what to do, my dad kept trying to make the engine start again. Cars behind him were growing impatient and started to honk their horn. Once, twice, multiple times. My dad was not giving up — he was pumping the gas and turning the key. Nothing. The honking increased behind him while he was frantically trying to get the engine going again. Until … He got out of the car and decided to try to push it. The honking horns were getting louder; more drivers joining in the noise putting pressure on the one guy trying to fix

BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

the problem — my dad. He was doing the best he could with the resources he had, but it was not enough. Standing by his car, soaking wet as he tried to push his car, my dad looked back and shouted, “Why don’t you try to make the engine start while I sit down and honk the horn for you?” The driver from the car immediately behind him smiled, got out of his car and helped my dad. The engine started; they jumped in their cars and went their way. It sounds like a simple car-trouble story, but to me it carries an important message. A message that I try to remember every time I hear something negative about a project or initiative. Empty criticism does not advance any cause. Do you see something that can be improved somewhere? At work? In the organization you volunteer? Roll up your sleeves and do something about it. Speak up and be prepared to help with the

job, too, because it is always easy to criticize and have an opinion when somebody else is doing the work. It is easier to honk the horn than to try to make the engine start. In the new year, I hope you, too, remember this story and choose to be part of the solution — help improve whatever it is you see that can be improved. Volunteer with nonprofit organizations working for the community focused on the cause that is dear to your heart; sit on their board and take on a project; submit suggestions to your HOA and help them implement those suggestions; sit on the board of your professional council to help define the scope of future projects; submit a proposal for implementing Corporate Social Responsibility in the company you work for and be part of the task force to develop it; visit your elected official to share your thoughts and hear their thoughts as well; also, be sure to vote. VV “I always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about that. Then, I realized I was somebody.” — Actress Lily Tomlin Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org

Pythons, other invasive species threaten Florida's wildlife Spinning tales about protecting Florida wildlife and environments. In Florida, there is concern for all wildlife whether is it a flourishing, threatened or an endangered animal or plant. Active commitment protects affected species such as the manatee (injured by boats), hawksbill sea turtle (pursued for shells, meat and eggs), Florida panther (loss of habitat, inbreeding, past senseless shootings) or the ghost orchid (over collected). Of serious concern is the release of invasive species, which are detrimental to wildlife and ecosystems. For example, the green iguana might be set free by pet owners when it becomes too large, aggressive or sick. Then, it might feed on bird eggs and tree snails, erode foundations or damage vegetation. In addition, It might reach more than 5 feet and lay more than 70 eggs. The Brazilian pepper tree, adorned with bright red berries, was imported as an ornamental. It dominates its surroundings, thus eliminating native plants from which animals obtain

vieravoice.com

food and shelter. Most problematic is the invasive Burmese python, which has sabotaged the ecosystem of the Everglades and nearby areas. It was first sighted in the 1980s, possibly escaped or released by pet owners. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew exacerbated the situation by enabling this species to flee from exotic wildlife venues, breeding facilities or pet stores. Reproduction for this python is alarming. The average nest displays more than 35 eggs. It possibly can lay 100 eggs. Therefore, the population is escalating. Regrettably, it has largely reduced the population of animals such as raccoons, opossum, rabbits and the fox. It also feeds on the eggs of birds such as the limpkin and guineafowl. It competes with the alligator as apex predator and is capable

of swallowing a deer or alligator. The Florida climate is obviously accommodating. With global warming predictions, it is feared that this python will venture north. Officials have introduced legislation and sponsored hunts (derbies) and trapping efforts to decrease the population of the Burmese Python. Biocontrol is being researched with the reintroduction of predators such as the Jaguar. Fortunately, this reptile is allowed to be humanely killed on private land. Unfortunately, it is a master at concealment. Without accountability, invasive creatures will continue to encroach and compete for food and territory. An upcoming threat is the African rock python. In Florida probably since 2001, it might reach 20 feet like the Burmese Python. It has been observed near a residential area 15 miles from downtown Miami. Undeniably, responsible pet ownership is essential. Moreover, sanctioned

hunting, fishing and boating must prevail. And when picking a wildflower or

planting a wild tree or bush, the status of the species should be considered. VV

The Shuck and Share program of the Brevard Zoo has an interesting slogan to describe its oyster recycling program. “Putting your dinner to work!” The oyster recycling program with local restaurants and seafood festivals is an innovative part of water restoration. This is how it works. After dining at your favorite seafood restaurant, your oyster shells are put into a special bin and picked up weekly by volunteers for the local oyster recycling program. Next, the recycled shells are turned into oyster modules for habitat restoration programs. These modules are placed to form an oyster reef, and habitat begins to form as oyster larvae settle on the shells to grow. In three to five years, you have the next generation of harvestable oysters. Did you know that a mature oyster can filter

between 20 and 50 gallons of water a day? For years, marine biologists, scientists and environmentalists have discussed projects to restore the declining oyster populations in the Indian River Lagoon. The anticipated results include improved water quality, and oyster beds providing habitat, food and protection for other species near them. Oyster reefs act as a wave break to decrease shoreline erosion. Several organizations have initiated programs using funds from the state of Florida, local county funds and donations from the public. Some include the Restore Our Shores — Oyster Mats & Gardening, the Oyster

Reef Restoration Project for the Mosquito and Indian River Lagoons, the Living Shoreline Project to restore oyster beds, and the Shuck and Share Oyster Restoration. According to Brevard Zoo’s RestoreOurShores.org website, Brevard County has 11 restaurants that have joined this recycling program. They include Bonefish Willy’s Riverfront Grille, Bunky’s Raw Bar and Grille, Dixie Crossroads, Fish Lips, Island Fish Grille, Molly’s Seafood Shack, Norman’s Raw Bar and Grille, River Rocks, Seafood Atlantic Inc., Sunset Waterfront Grille and Bar, and Victorio’s Oyster Bar. Volunteers are needed to pick up shells from the restaurants listed. Create oyster restoration materials and deploy the final product into an oyster reef, break water or living shoreline. For information on how to help, email restoreourshores@ BrevardZoo.org or go to HelpTheLagoon.org. VV

Will the beautiful swans ever come back to Viera? BY WENDY SCHEURING Not long ago, people parked their cars in droves along the west side of Murrell Road in a line long enough to be reminiscent of a Space Shuttle launch. The people came. The people parked. The people flocked. All to see a spectacular sight — long-necked white swans swimming with their cygnets on the lakes that hugged the Murrell Road shore. These lakes flowed into the conjoining waters of Six Mile Creek, a homeowner’s community directly across from the Indian River Colony Club. Those swans are long since gone, but residents still remember how they graced the lakes with their elegance and beauty. They wonder if they are ever going to come back. Tom Neal, the president of the Six Mile Creek Homeowners Association, shared memories of how the swans that once lived, nested and thrived on these lakes eventually perished or simply flew away. “One group stayed here for a while. Some of them got

killed. One went on Murrell Road and got run over. One was nesting and had eggs and one morning the female was gone and we found her a few days later in some bushes. Something got to her and killed her.” Although Neal didn’t live in Six Mile Creek when the swans first made their appearance, he recalls hearing that the swans were gifted by the builder when Phase 4 of the development was completed. A swan committee of concerned and interested residents ensued. “The committee took care of the swans and kept their wings clipped so they wouldn’t fly away. Their health was monitored. If one was sick, we’d take it to the vet to have them taken care of. We made sure they had feed but, when the committee fell apart, we stopped clipping their wings.” “They stayed for quite a while. I know some of them (the swans) were killed by animals in the neighborhood. Most of all, however, was that they were flying away,” Neal said. Neal recently has heard from a few residents who would be willing to share

the expenses of purchasing new swans. But, he’s still looking for people who are committed to taking care of them. For now, the Six Mile Creek community enjoys the various wildlife that frequents their lakes. “In February, the pelicans fly in and stay a couple of weeks and then they are gone. They are solid white, not like the ones you see at the beach,” Neal said. “The swans were beautiful,” Neal remembered. “If we could get enough people to participate, we could get enough to start it again.” VV
