Dorcas schedules annual charitable event March 1 SPECIAL TO IE A OICE The Dorcas Circle Methodist Women’s group will hold its annual spring Attic Treasures and Bake Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 14 at Suntree United Methodist Church at 7400 North Wickham Road. The Dorcas Circle is a group of approximately 50 women, who meet monthly for the purpose of doing community service. The group tries to emulate Dorcas, a biblical saint who spent her life helping the poor. During the past three years, Breeden has worked hard to establish a culture at Viera where contending for a state championship is the expectation for everyone in the program. “The coaches communicate it very well — every day,” Mordas said. “Everyone knows the mentality is to work hard every day at practice.” With Mitchell on the mound, and all the young talent behind her, the Hawks would appear to be on their way to another long postseason run. Asked what she expects from her senior pitcher this season, Breeden started her answer with one word: “Domination.” VV

Under the FHSAA’s new classification system, the Tigers will drop from Class 5A to Class 2A for the next two years and compete in District 7 along with the Brevard HEAT, Merritt Island Christian, Covenant Christian and the City of Life Christian Academy of Kissimmee. “I really think we’re going to go far this year,” junior Isabella Tomasura said. “Even though we have a young team, it’s going to be good. “These seventh graders are so athletic and some of these girls already play travel ball, so that’s a plus.” Tomasura highlights a list of returners that also includes juniors Shea Dimmer and Claire Jackering; seniors Adiya McDougle, Morgan Bierbrunner, Anaya Lopez and Jordan Blair and eighthgrade pitcher Cali Perillo. Among the seventh graders are pitchers Brooke Samuels and Bebe Stockton who, along with Dimmer, should give the Tigers plenty of arms to get through the season as the younger players continue to develop. “They’re athletic people in general, so I don’t think they’re going to have a hard time picking up how to play the sport well,” McDougle said of the seventh graders.

Tigers coach John Clarson feels his team can be very competitive in its new district as well as its new classification. ith the number of young players, Holy Trinity probably is not going to be known as a power-hitting team. “I think we’re going to end up having to play more small ball, so we’re able to put the ball in play and create opportunities,” he said. Tomasura, who has battled injuries the past two seasons, is not only healthy, but believes that her fielding, and particularly her hitting, have improved since last season. McDougle also believes she will be better at the plate. “I’m making (more) contact and it’s going a lot farther,” she said. “I feel like this year will be good for me.” It could be a good year for all the Tigers if things go as planned and the team comes together as the season goes along. “We’re not going to start off the best,” Tomasura said. “ e’re definitely going to grow together. With the huge age gap, we’re not super close yet. But it will get there, and then that will make us stronger as a team, as a winning team.” V V

But while the pain of losing in last season’s regional final still lingers for the Viera High School baseball team, the Hawks aren’t wallowing in it. They’re using it as motivation. “I think the guys know how it felt. I know how it felt,” senior catcher Alan Espinal said. “We do not want to go through that again. It was pretty bad. It wasn’t sad because it’s baseball. Things like that happen. “But it hurts. We were so close, up by two, and then it got out of our hands. I think we’ve matured from that standpoint and we’re going to be better.” With 11 seniors on the roster, the Hawks should not be lacking for leadership this season. Bammer Brait and Connor Leary, who manned the middle infield for the Hawks for four years, have graduated and will be tough to replace. But Viera could have another solid combo up the middle with sophomore Edian Espinal at shortstop and freshman Alex Sosa at second. Junior Ben Schleeper likely will see time at shortstop early in the season while Edian Espinal recovers from an injury. Junior Liam Samuels will man first base with help from senior David Rusnak and senior Zach Taylor.

Senior Ethan Huffman might have the best velocity on the team and seniors Rusnak and Hunter Longtin, along with Samuels, also should see action. “We’ve got a lot of experience back,” Viera coach Bob Doty said. “A lot of innings pitched back. The last couple of years, we’ve always gotten guys to throw strikes, keep the ball down, get us some ground balls and let us pick it up in the field. With a challenging schedule, the Hawks will certainly be tested. But Doty believes this is a team that can compete at a high level. “We’re really motivated,” McDermott said. “We’re all just ready to get this thing started and see how far we can go.” VV

They’re eager to see how far they can go after losing in the first round of last year’s district tournament. “We’re looking forward to making it into districts and trying to win it,” Gonzalez said. “We’ve got some young guys that are going to step up. It’s up to us as seniors to lead them.” While the Tigers are members of Class 3A, District 9 along with Cocoa Beach, Frostproof, John Carroll, Lake Placid, Lincoln Park and Melbourne Central Catholic, this year’s FHSAA playoff format will be similar to football, where teams will build up points based on their schedule to determine which teams will move on to the

With a top half of the lineup that features sophomore Cole Hewatt, junior Cal Rethwisch, junior Cole Teply, Gonzalez and Nunno, the Tigers’ offense should be dangerous. “The first (five guys are going to be able to hit very well,” said Nunno, who later added, “I think we’re better than last year.” If the top of the Tigers’ lineup can produce, it should make it harder for opposing teams to pitch around Teply as often as they did last season. “He saw a lot of curveballs, a lot of outside fastballs,” Kelce said of Teply. “We’ve made the adjustments this year. Cole has worked really hard this summer. He’s put the time in and I think he’s ready for the challenge this year of being a real top hitter in Brevard County this year.” Teply and Gonzalez also will

combine with freshman Cas Werder and sophomore closer Joe Coston to give the Tigers a solid pitching staff. Depending on who is pitching, the Tigers will have either Teply or Gonzalez at first base. The rest of the infield will feature freshman Sal Carlson at second base, freshman Zach Jordan at shortstop and Rethwisch at third. Sophomore Hunter Leech will be in left field, and Nunno will be in center field. Right field will be a platoon among sophomore Ryan Mel, Coston, Werder or Gonzalez. Freshman Luke Iten, who starred on the Viera-Suntree Little League team that went to the World Series last summer, is set to be the catcher. “I’m excited,” Kelce said. “I think we’re going to win some games this year.” V V

shaved to raise money to fund research and find cures for childhood cancers. In Brevard County alone, about 3,000 heads have been

To the casual observer, bottles and red pails on a desk at the Rossetter House Museum in Eau Gallie might appear ordinary. But photographer Jim Kalupa saw an opportunity to take that to another level. “I take my photographic images and apply fine art effects through digital processing,” Kalupa said in an interview at his Indialantic home. Some artists aim to make their art look like photographic images. Some photographers, however, try to make their work appear as an oil or watercolor. Kalupa said much of his work falls into the latter category. “When I put it on the

place they can relate to, have been to or it’s on their bucket list,” he said. His travels began when he escaped the frigid winters of his Wisconsin home and moved to the Caribbean in 1961. Then, in the 1980s, while living in Southern California, he studied photography formally. But his job as vice president of claims at an insurance company remained his main focus. Since moving to Florida in 2005, he has devoted his energies to a constantly evolving art. Kalupa believes digital processing has opened up photography to an almost

unlimited horizon. Composition, lighting effects and the image, for many people, tell a story. “Some photos might not have the sharpest image, the best exposure. Yet, it might have strong appeal.” “Photographers need to have a feeling or sixth sense about what might make a good photograph. Some come by it naturally. Others develop it through experience,” Kalupa said. Some subjects require patience to get a few excellent shots. But, Kalupa said, in his travels, he doesn’t have the luxury of time. “I have to take the shot when it’s there.” VV

Experts seek cure or ailing citrus industry BY MARIA SONNENBERG Korinn Braden, the director of Field Manor, once enjoyed looking at the acres of experimental citrus trees the University of Florida had planted on the Merritt Island homestead of a Brevard County citrus grower. Unfortunately, Braden witnessed the once-promising grove’s decline as another hope to find a cure for an ailing industry wilts. “They were trying to use a rootstock that would be resilient, but the trees are just not thriving,” Braden said.

The historical property by the banks of the Indian River on Merritt Island would have been the perfect showcase for the rebirth of the Brevard citrus industry, which has been languishing since two major diseases, greening and canker, infected the majority of trees. Canker is bad because it blemishes the fruit, but does not affect the flavor, which still can be used in processing. Greening is worse since, as the name implies, the fruit remains green and never reaches maturity. “We tried everything within reason to make those

trees grow,” said Frank Sullivan, a board member with Field Manor. Before canker and before greening, Sullivan Victory Groves was once famous for its luscious Indian River citrus. These days, Sullivan owns only 20 acres, where cattle graze and no oranges grow. Although the future is not rosy for citrus, it is not bleak since growers in the state fight back. A conglomerate of old citrus families in Indian River County have joined forces with Coca-Cola and Japanese investors to develop 1,500 acres of grapefruit, according to Sullivan. “Untold millions are beings spent on research on new varieties that are resistant to greening,” he added. In Polk County, growers are experimenting by growing citrus under screen enclosures.

Frank Sullivan has not given up on the potential of a citrus rebirth in Brevard County. “They’ve planted 110 acres, with 110 more being prepared and another 110 in the works,” Sullivan said. Dundee Citrus Growers, a cooperative, aims for a million trees on the ground by loaning member growers $10 per tree planted. If the tree

thrives to the point of bearing productive fruit, the loan will be forgiven. “We’re inching back,” Sullivan said. Perhaps even Field Manor might one day be again adorned with the golden pearls of oranges. VV

Small business o ners lament closing o Earth Fare BY ERNEST ARICO The closing of Earth Fare, a natural and organic grocery store, has upset business owners and customers in the Viera shopping center where it opened with much fanfare only 13 months ago. “If you wanted good, gourmet food there’s no other place to go,” said Aly Hirji of

Viera while sitting inside the Florida Wine and Spirit store next door in the Viera East Village Shopping Center on Murrell Road. Earth Fare was the anchor store for the shopping center with several new small businesses. Anchor stores are intended to draw the public to the shopping center, which often benefits the smaller

businesses. The stability and confidence anchor stores give to the adjacent small business owners is important. “It was nice to have all of the foot traffic in the shopping center,” said Laura Hermann, a receptionist for the H&R Block office in Suite 215. The Benchmark Group of Amherst, N.Y. is the managing agent for the 72,600-square-

foot shopping center on 14.6 acres. Earth Fare store, along with 49 other stores in 10 states with 3,000 employees, closed February 29. In a statement last month, Earth Fare noted that current retail market conditions and its debt load hampered its ability to operate, despite “numerous strategic initiatives

aimed at growth and expansion and enhancing the customer experience.” “I’m sad and disappointed to see the store closed,” said Lesley Marks of Suntree, who was shopping in the store during its liquidation sales. “They (Earth Fare) had a unique line of wellness products that I really liked.” VV

The floss was lightweight, more buoyant than cork, water repellent and it had insulating properties. School children eagerly gathered milkweed pods for the war effort. Another plant in demand was hemp. Its strong and durable fiber was beneficial during the American colonial era, the Revolutionary War and World War II. This plant was vital to Britain’s quest for global power through its navy. Ships needed hemp for sails and rigging. In 1619, Britain imposed a law for hemp to be cultivated in the Jamestown colony. The following year, the Mayflower (a merchant ship also equipped with hemp sailcloth and rope rigging) carried hemp seeds aboard on its renown voyage. Eventually, more colonies were required to cultivate hemp. As colonists engaged in cottage industries, they needed more of the hemp they grew for their own endeavors, including shipbuilding and clothing. They bartered with

hemp — hemp was legal tender even for taxes. The crown imposed more taxes, hoping to restrain colonial industries. This ultimately led to the revolution. During the Revolutionary War, hemp kept the colonial navy afloat. Thomas Jefferson declared, ”Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country.” He grew hemp, as did Washington. Historians claim that hemp paper was used for drafts of the Declaration of Independence. The first American flags were made of hemp. Furthermore, Abraham Lincoln’s lamps were lit by hemp seed oil. Supposedly, in World War II, hemp seed oil lubricated parts of President George Bush’s airplane engine. His life-saving parachute displayed hemp webbing. The ship that saved him was equipped with hemp rope and hemp fire hoses. His military shoes were stitched with hemp. Clearly, plants were beneficial in the past. And they continue to contribute. VV

Look in the mirror to nd blame or lagoon s problems What’s causing the problems in the Indian River Lagoon? Unfortunately, it’s us. The problem is mostly excess nutrients in the water. Nitrogen and phosphorous compounds in the water stimulate massive growth of algae, producing the scum and cloudiness in the lagoon. Even worse, when the algae dies, it decays and uses up the oxygen in the water. This kills the fish and other animals. But, where do the excess nutrients come from? Mostly from people and their activities. Using toilets, washing cars and fertilizing lawns is problematic. There has been a population explosion in Brevard County, growing from 23,000 in 1950 to more than 584,000 today. Day by day, the nutrients build up through time. Indeed, these contaminants, together with silt and other solid matter washes into the lagoon and settles to the bottom. This has created a coating of muck, a black, gooey mayonnaise-like material, that covers a lot of the lagoon’s floor. Currently, muck is the biggest nitrogen source since it contributes approximately a million pounds a year through chemical reactions and flux out of this goop. It is followed closely by septic systems flows

and stormwater runoff. Wastewater utilities also are an important source of pollutants. Waste facilities used to dump an estimated 40 to 50 million gallons of partially treated wastewater into the lagoon every day. This was halted in 1996 thanks to the Clean Water Act. Another source that needs attention and control is agriculture, including the dumping of biosolids (partially treated human waste) in Brevard County. A Circuit Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit by four Viera East homeowners and commercial property owners seeking to stop the Board of Supervisors of the Viera East Community Development District from purchasing an $11.2 million bond for golf course and park improvements. The four homeowners — Robert Dale, Paul F. Daley, Steve Colasinski and Trisha Smith — appeared before 18th Judicial Circuit Court Judge George T. Paulk in the Titusville Historic Courthouse on Feb. 7. The judge granted the summary judgement to the VECDD, citing that there “wasn’t enough evidence” and “no issues of material fact in contention” by the four homeowners to grant the lawsuit. Attorney Blake Edwards,

who represented the four homeowners at the hearing, said they might appeal the judge’s ruling. “We’re looking at all of our options,” he said. Despite a majority of residents that voiced their opposition during a public hearing July 25, 2019 in the multi-purpose room of the Faith Lutheran Church at 5550 Faith Drive in Viera, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the 20-year bond that will see more than $11 million put toward improvements at the Viera East Golf Club and golf course. These enhancements include: Clubhouse renovations, including a banquet facility at a cost of $2.9 million. • A new irrigation system for $2 million. • Bunker renovations for $1.1 million. • In addition to the $9 million in expenses,

homeowners also will pay nearly $5 million more in interest. In order to pay off the $11 million bond, Viera East homeowners will have to foot the bill. The assessment will take effect after the VECDD’s water management assessment bond is paid off in 2023. Homeowners in Six Mile Creek, Crane Creek, Cross Creek and some homeowners in the south section of the Indian River Colony Club are not affected by the bond. There are more than 4,200 households in the VECDD. Of that total, 791 houses are on the golf course. Viera East Golf Club includes the communities of Aberdeen, Addington, Ashton, Blackheath, Brightwood, Canterbury, Collingtree, Durban Park, Oaklefe, Parkstone, Stratford Place, and Woodhall. VV

Tenor saxophonist Jeff Rupert, a Yamaha artist and record producer under the Flying Horse label, will be the featured artist at the Space Coast Jazz Society’s March concert. The concert will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8 at the Rockledge Country Club. The doors will open at 1 p.m. Rupert will be joined by his quartet, which includes similarly recognized drummer Marty Merrill, pianist Richard Drexler and bassist Benjamin Kramer. Rupert’s performing and recording credits include associations with Diane Schuur, Mel Tormé, Kevin Mahogany, Ernestine Anderson and Benny Carter’s Grammy award-winning VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Space Coast Jazz Society Harlem Renaissance.
