Scarecrow Stroll brings true heroes for needy children BY MARIA SONNENBERG Little things can make a big difference. For a child

of normalcy back into life is welcome. Friends of Children of Brevard, the recipient of this year’s Scarecrow Stroll fundraiser, is all about providing normal activities for children who have been removed from the home environment because of abuse or neglect. The 100-percent, volunteer nonprofit has appropriately chosen a superhero theme for the crow they will create for the Stroll, a Viera Voice signature event. “We’re using the theme of being a hero for a child,” said Brittany Levy, the vice president. Seventeen board members, together with a handful of associate board members, spend the year fundraising to provide anything from sneakers to birthday cakes for the approximately 1,000 vulnerable youngsters in the Guardian Ad Litem program. When the state deems it is in the child’s best interest to be removed from home, they turn to the children’s relatives, friends or licensed foster care homes. While the state covers the basics
for the child, the interim caregivers might not have the financial resources to provide the little extras in life. The children often arrive with only the shirt on their backs. “The state provides the necessities, but it can’t fund everything,” Levy said. Friends of Children steps in to provide un-met needs, be it clothing, holiday gifts and even beds. “Friends of Children are a critical part of helping kids remain kids,” said Carol Jewell, the director for Circuit Court District 18 of the Guardian Ad Litem program, which works closely with Friends of Children. More than half of the Friends of Children members also are associated with Guardian Ad Litem, the volunteer child advocates who help Florida’s abused, abandoned and neglected children. “It started many years ago with a few Harris Corporation employees asking how they could help,” Jewell said. Brittany Levy joined the organization at the
encouragement of her grandmother, 92-year-old Viera resident Esther Glaser, long active in Friends of Children. “We raise funds to help these kids with everything from a summer camp to a prom dress or a cap and gown,” Levy said. To make it all possible, the group hosts several fundraisers, including the Superhero 5K around The Avenue Viera. This year, the Scarecrow Stroll will infuse more funds into the program after the crows are auctioned off at the Oct. 19 Harvest Festival, when 100 percent of proceeds from the auction go to Friends of Children of Brevard. The community is invited to “stroll” from Oct. 2 to 16 to see and vote for their favorite among the many unique crows created by local businesses and organizations, including Autumn House, Fairfield Inn and Suites, the Girl Scouts and the Art Gallery of Viera. The simple tasks were a burden. The pain was continuous. My husband studied about the stem cell procedure and we decided that this was what I was meant to try. Much prayers and consideration went into this decision. The results have been amazing. My mobility came as soon as the procedure was finished. I am walking without pain. Our dogs live in our homes, sleep beside us and get to spend plenty of time in healthy play in parks, on the beach or even just at home. For dogs in shelters, however, this vital aspect of playtime and socialization can sometimes be lacking. To help promote good socialization of shelter dogs, the SPCA of Brevard announced on Aug. 26, National Dog Day, its new Borrowed Buddies program for shelter dogs. Borrowed Buddies allows for participants to check out a dog for a day, providing the dog with important, social free-time outside of the kennel. “Borrowed Buddies gives the public the opportunity to check out a shelter dog VIERA VOICE Courtesy of SPCA of Brevard for the day and go on One of the dogs available to borrow through the SPCA's Borrowed Buddies program is Dawn. adventures,â€? Free flights promote Young Eagles program SPECIAL TO THE VIERA VOICE Children ranging in age from 8 to 17 will go for the ride of their lives from 8:30 a.m. until noon on Oct. 26 when the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will conduct its Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Merritt Island Airport. The airport is located at 900 Airport Road on Merritt Island. “The airplane rides are free,” said Don White, the chapter coordinator for the event. “We hope to build a one-on-one relationship between the pilots and the young people. Thus, giving the new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation while enjoying the thrill of flying.’’ Preregistration is required. A parent must register their child at YEDAY.org and fill out the registration form and then click on the submit button for this event. Forms will be printed out at the airport for parents to sign. For those without computer access, limited registration will be conducted at the airport. A parent or guardian must accompany the child to sign the registration form. Flights will average abut 20 minutes, depending on the type of airplane. Following the flight, each young person (Young Eagle) will receive a certificate making him or her an official Young Eagle flight member and a personal flight log book from Sporty’s Pilot Shop. Their names also will be entered into the World’s Largest Log Book. This book is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. All pilots and airplanes are certified by the FAA and are insured. For more information, call 321-266-7410. V V

Holy Trinity’s new athletic complex moves forward BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL For young athletes, the availability of quality resources for sporting events can mean the difference of casually playing a league game to competing in national championships. In the spring, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy (HTEA) approved a capital campaign for a $5.5 million Tiger Athletic Complex at its Upper School. “This project includes the construction of a 12,207-square-foot field house featuring home and visitor locker rooms, concessions, restrooms, strength and conditioning facilities, athletic trainer facilities, office space and a dining pavilion,” officials wrote in a news release. “It also includes the latest generation artificial turf field and Plexitrac athletic track surface, as well as road, parking, lighting and sidewalk enhancements, gym upgrades and other vital improvements that will transform the Upper School for all Holy Trinity students, families and visitors.” The project was immediately undertaken,
and construction began on the synthetic turf field this summer. By the fall, just in time for the first game of the season on, Sept. 13, the field was completed and the next step of the capital campaign was underway. Construction of a new, 12,207-square-foot field house will begin in November. It should be completed in late 2020 or early 2021. The new turf, having been laid down in the summer, is top-of-the-line quality and provides the student athletes the best resources in synthetic turf. Alongside the field, a running track with a “Plexitrac Accelerator polyresin all-weather surface,” is a new addition. The track and field stadium, labeled the Kelly Automotive Stadium, is only the first step in the capital campaign. It seeks to build an entire complex for HTEA called the Tiger Athletic Complex. “The addition of the Tiger Athletic Complex and related enhancements to our athletic facilities are vital to helping us fulfill our goal of educating the whole child — mind, body and spirit,”
VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Michelle Salyer

A digital rendering of the Kelly Automotive Stadium shows what the finished product will look like.
said Dr. Katherine Cobb, president of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. “Eightysix percent of our students participate in athletics, and every student participates
in physical education from preschool through junior high, so athletics represent an integral part of student life at Holy Trinity. These facilities will
make a significant impact on the holistic educational experience for generations of students to come.” For more information, go to htacademy.org. VV

Viera golf teams focused on reaching state tournament BY CARL KOTALA The Viera High School boys and girls golf teams might have undergone some changes this season, but the goal still is the same: Playing at the Mission Inn Resort with a shot at winning the state championship. “I think this team has a chance to make it to state,” Viera girls coach Greg Ford said. “Our goal is always to get there. We’re just going to have to do what we can do to get there. “They’ll work hard. They’ll be fine.” Viera’s girls have won 11 district tournaments in a row and have been regular visitors to Howey-in-the-Hills for the state competition. However, this year’s team is a much younger group with only two seniors — Briana Gabe and Morgan Bentley. The boys team, meanwhile, has its third coach in three years. But Brian Hoffman, who was an assistant coach last year, believes his group has a shot at making it to state and is trying to get his players to concentrate on each postseason tournament as it comes. “We have the firepower this year to do it, so that’s what we’re hoping for,” Hoffman said. “Our top four guys are all in the 30s, anywhere from a 36 par to 39. Our fifth and sixth guys are in the low 40s. It makes for a well-rounded, complete (group of) six guys on the team, which I think is going to benefit us going into the postseason.” Although the Viera boys team did not qualify for the state tournament last year, Sam Karman advanced to Howey-in-the-Hills as an individual.

Briana Gabe, left, and Morgan Bentley are the only two seniors on this year's Viera High girls golf team, which is hoping to make it back to the state tournament despite playing in a tougher district and region.
This year’s postseason tournaments will be much tougher after the FHSAA enlarged the districts and reshuffled the regions. Viera is now in the same district with Melbourne, Lake Nona and Vero Beach with three of those teams advancing to the regionals. Karman has been sharing the No. 1 spot this season with senior Douglas Gearhart. Senior Dylan Melby has been playing No. 3, followed by sophomore Chris Hoffman, senior Jacob Melby and junior Nitai Zipp. “We didn’t lose anybody from last year that played in districts or regionals, so that will be good,” Karman said. “We’ve just got to execute when it comes time.” For Viera’s girls, Gabe is the No. 1 player and team leader. Freshman Rebecca Luchs is at No. 2 and another freshman, Brittany Odic, plays either No. 3 or 4. The team also has two young players who were on last year’s team that went to state — Heart Gerosano and Ana Maria Tea.
“We’re definitely a younger team this year,” Gabe said. “It’s not going to be as easy as it was in the past, but we definitely have a shot. We just all need to play our best.” V V

Holy Trinity cross country teams building for strong finish BY CARL KOTALA This year’s Holy Trinity boys and girls cross teams figure to be following the exact path any coach would want:
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Holy Trinity eighth-grader Ivy Knight has emerged as one of the top runners on this year's girls cross country team.
They’re only going to get better as the season goes on. That’s particularly the case for the Holy Trinity boys team, which started off the season with a number of new runners who had never raced in a varsity meet before. “We could have a very phenomenal finish to the season, because once everybody gets into shape, then I’ll truly be able to see what we have,” said Holy Trinity coach Anthony Sullivan following an earlyseason race. Speaking after that same race, senior Brandon Assam also was high on his team’s chances. “I think we can be really good,” Assam said. “We looked really strong this first meet, which was a lot better than last year. I think we have a good chance of pushing for states this year. Our top seven runners are

really fast.” Top runner Matt Allen had been battling some injury problems early on in the season, but returned to lead the team at last month’s Katie Caples Invitational with a time of 20 minutes. He was followed by sophomores Will Bell and Jack Riggs, freshman Cassidy
Werder, senior Ryan Mozer and a string of seventh graders — Zack Gunderson, Keaton White, Finley Werder and Thomas McHenry. Holy Trinity’s girls, meanwhile, came into this season facing the prospect of having to replace last year’s Class 1A state champion — Carly McNatt (who transferred to IMG Academy) — as well as another top runner in Sasha Wiechecki Vergara, who graduated. “Trying to replace those two is never going to be an easy task when they’re two of the top 20 runners in 1A,” Sullivan said. “We’re working to try to replace them and trying to push forward as a team, trying to work together as a team.” The results early on have been encouraging. Eighth-grader Braelyn Wahy has moved into the No. 1 spot for the Tigers,
although at the Katie Caples Invitational, she finished third on her team behind Ivy Knight and Ava Knight. Senior Charlotte Varnes was fourth for Holy Trinity in that race with eighthgrader Sophia Weiner, seventh-graders Natalie Morris and Valentina Velarde, junior Jaiden Martin, seventh-grader Janely Tavares and sophomore Julia McNatt all coming in next. Despite the departure of two top runners, the Tigers figure to be in the hunt once again for a finish somewhere in the top seven of this year’s Class 1A state meet, which is set to take place Nov. 9 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. “The team is actually going to be very good,” Wahy said. “We have a lot of strong, new seventh graders.” V V
Holy Trinity golf teams improving, but face tough postseason challenge BY CARL KOTALA With a number of young players on both the Holy Trinity boys and girls golf team rosters, this season is all about potential. Holy Trinity’s girls, with no seniors on the roster, won five of their first six matches under new head coach Ben Rotgers. “Against Cocoa Beach
and MCC we had all six girls (shoot) in the 40s,” he said. “They’ve been working hard and having fun doing it.” Junior Ellen Choi is playing No. 1 for the Tigers, followed by freshman Emma Baumgartner, junior Avery Kenney, sophomore Emily Rotgers, junior Nikki Katz and freshman Sydney Smith. “This year, our team has been really strong,”

Toll road agency’s responsiveness bodes well for Brevard BY CURT SMITH Two years ago, while I was chair of the Brevard Board of County Commissioners, I strongly advocated for our county to join the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX). part of the county and two massive developments planned for ranch land extending eastward from Osceola and Orange counties, it’s only a matter of time until building a new eastwest route south of SR 528 makes perfect sense. At this point, CFX doesn’t have any plans to do so, but Brevard County now has a seat at the table when the agency begins to plan for a westward evacuation route and a more convenient thoroughfare to Orlando International Airport. A connector joining south Brevard with its neighbors to the west also would create greater economic
mobility for residents and elevate the area’s standard of living and quality of life. Of course, such a roadbuilding project would take years of preparation before construction could begin. And that’s why I see a group such as CFX being the right partner for our county. The agency has a proven track record for perseverance and problemsolving, having designed and constructed sections of the environmentally sensitive Wekiva Parkway, for example. It’s the agency’s responsiveness to its member jurisdictions that I believe will bode well for Brevard as more people and jobs move here and our beaches grow in popularity. I look forward to working with my CFX partners to address transportation solutions for our community. Transporters, reference checkers, people who do home visits, all donate their own time to saving lives. Jean Katsaros, a CPR volunteer, said if one had to choose the most important link in this “chain of love” it would have to be the people who foster. “Without kennels, each and every dog must have a home to go to until they are ready for the ‘Take Me Home’ page,” (from the group’s website — coastalpoodlerescue.org), she said. “Fostering a dog in a family home, often with other pets, is a great way to provide them reassurance, to assess their temperament and to see that any medical needs are attended to. In the meantime, our area coordinators manage to match the dogs in our care with folks who have applied to adopt one of our precious poodles. We showcase our adoptable dogs at regular and special events all over Brevard, using these occasions to provide education and outreach.

“Our dogs each have a unique history, with some coming to us from individuals, some from shelters, and even some from vets and groomers,” according to a news release from the organization. CPR ensures that each dog is spayed/neutered, has their vaccinations updated, are microchipped, are tested for heartworms and other parasites, have a thorough vet exam, and are treated, if possible, for any known conditions found before adoption. All medical information is fully disclosed to new owners. The dogs are placed in foster homes that provide love and patience to help the animals adjust before being adopted. Their stays in foster care vary from several days to several months, depending upon the dog's condition and needs. “The dogs often need a grooming, and we have generous local professionals who will happily clean them up and have them looking beautiful again,” the organization reported. Peggy Cronic, the organization’s vice president, said CPR is having a very tough time in placing poodles and poodle-mixed dogs in good homes. “One main reason is

Quest Elementary School will host its first Art Night on Oct. 22. There will be a number of stations that students and their parents will be able to take part in for spin art.
BY CARL KOTALA It’s a night that promises to be fun for Quest Elementary School students and their families. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is putting on the first Quest Art Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22. “We’re planning on it to be very hands on, an event that all of the family can be included,” Quest PTO President Dana Wilkins said. “Moms and dads can participate.” There will be no charge to take part in the event, which will feature several different stations for students and their families to rotate to and from. However, there will be a request for donations to help fund a project that will
make the school unique. “We are hoping to create a rock garden in front of Quest,” Wilkins said. “It’s inspired by the book, ‘Only One You’ (by Linda Kranz) so the kids can create a unique rock, just like them.” In addition to a rock painting table, there also will be spin art, a sensory bubble painting station, sand art and a station to make tissue paper fall crafts. The plan also is for there to be a local student on hand to have a station with step-by-step instruction on how to draw. “We’re kind of excited for that,” Wilkins said. “It will be different pictures, so the kids can stay (there) if they wanted and families can draw together.” With so many different stations, the hope is that

Holy Trinity helps Bahamas with special gift SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy held a Bahamas hurricane relief fundraiser in September at both campuses, raising $32,000 to aid the people of the Bahamas. Students and their families donated a little more than $20,000 throughout the week, and a generous school family
offered to match every dollar raised up to $10,000. This helped the school make an even bigger impact on the lives of those devastated by Hurricane Dorian. All funds collected were given to the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida to be wired directly to the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and Turks & Caicos. These funds will
be used first and foremost for emergency relief in the communities served by the diocese and for the rebuilding of churches, clergy homes and parish halls in those communities. Of the $100,000 raised by the Episcopal Diocese, nearly one-third came from the families of Holy Trinity. V V

Nature, animals inspire Rockledge artist BY ERNEST ARICO Susan Kennicott knew from a very young age that she loved to paint. In fact, the 63-year-old Rockledge artist said her inspiration started when she was a small child growing up on a farm in the Midwest.
“The beauty of the flowers in my mother’s garden, the corn in the fields, the cows in pasture, all the richness of that farm life and growing up in a creative family greatly influenced me and my art,” she said. “I am who I am and how I see things today from my roots
of nature.” Born in Macomb, Illinois, Kennicott graduated from Colchester High School in 1973 and attended Western Illinois University. She ran several jewelry stores in the Houston, Texas area and a small art gallery in Iowa before turning to

painting full-time. Kennicott moved to Brevard County in December 2014 with her husband, Tony, and son, Brent. Tony, an avid golfer and hunter, ran several major homebuilding companies before retiring, while her son, Brent, graduated from the University of Florida. He now works for a construction company in the Fort Myers area. “I love Brevard County,” Kennicott said. “The people, the county. It felt good to move here. Like a shoe, it fit.” Kennicott has won numerous awards throughout the years. One of her favorites is when she won first place in acrylic paints at the Iowa State Fair. “It seems like I’ve painted forever,” she added. “I love doing acrylic painting and I like doing three-dimensional portraits. I put a lot of depth into my paintings.” Acrylic paint is a great medium because it is relatively inexpensive, water-soluble, quick-drying, versatile and forgiving. Because acrylic is a plastic polymer, it can be painted on any surface as long as it doesn't contain wax or oil. Besides painting, Kennicott loves to teach art. She started teaching art 12 years ago, most recently at Ralph’s Art Supply in Melbourne. She will conduct classes this month at the Art Gallery of Viera on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
“I love to teach art,” she said. “I tailor my teaching to the student. I never tell a person they can’t paint. I don’t stand up there and lecture. ” Kennicott said she encourages students to paint what they want. “There is no wrong art,” she added. “It is an expression. You learn as you paint. It’s a relaxed atmosphere. We have fun.” Two artists that have inspired Kennicott are Robert Bateman, a Canadian naturalist and painter, and Rose Frantzen. Frantzen, a native of Maquoketa, Iowa, has gained national and international acclaim for her oil paintings from life that bring contemporary perspectives to a traditional alla prima approach. Alla prima refers to a direct painting approach where paint is applied wet on wet without letting earlier layers dry. In Italian, the term alla prima means "at first attempt.” Kennicott said her future goals are to continue to inspire and teach people how to paint and continue to paint for fun for many more years. “I would like to do more animal portraits,” she said. “I think my favorite paintings are of nature, fish and animals.” For more information about Kennicott and her work, go to susankennicott. com V V

Florida law limits use of ha ard lights BY ERNEST ARICO If you’ve ever driven on Interstate 95 during a really bad storm, you’ve probably seen other drivers put on their hazard lights — and maybe you’ve done it yourself. But according to the VIERA VOICE photo Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida Department Florida law says use your hazard of Highway Safety and lights only whenever your vehicle is stopped or disabled on the road. Motor Vehicles and AAA,
it’s actually illegal to use your flashers during those conditions in Florida. Turning your hazard lights on makes all four turn signals flash at the same time, giving a headsup to emergency crews that there’s a traffic hazard problem ahead. Many drivers use their flashers during bad weather because they say it’s about increasing visibility.
However, the Florida Highway Patrol says using the hazard lights can make other drivers think you’ve stopped or stalled your vehicle. In addition, FHP says by turning on your flashers, you lose the ability to use your turn signals as you normally would. Florida law enforcement agencies say if the weather is so bad that you can’t
safely see while driving, you should pull over to a safe place until the storm passes. Use your hazard lights only when your vehicle is stopped or disabled on the road. The only acceptable time you can use your hazard lights while driving in Florida is during a funeral procession. According to AAA, the use of hazard lights varies from state to state. V V

p o o c BUSINESSS Viera Pi a hit the ground running
BY MARIA SONNENBERG Running and pizza are not words usually seen in close proximity, but at Viera Pizza, running is very much part of the picture. The busy pizzeria Mike Acosta started 15 years ago this month has a strong connection with the local running scene, particularly as it relates to charitable events. Through Viera Pizza’s
Power of Pizza Charities, Viera Pizza orchestrates powerhouse races such as the Eye of the Dragon 10K, the Space Coast Classic 15K and the Run Run Santa, which provides a full-fledged Santa suit for every runner in this very popular holiday event. All the running around started in 2012, when Acosta met runner and avid pizza fan Brittany Streufert. “We both liked pizza, but I wasn’t a runner,” Acosta said.

The two began discussing orchestrating a race that would benefit their community. Acosta already was experienced at supporting local nonprofits. From that pizza-laden meeting came the idea for the Eat My Crust 5K. It has raised more than $100,000 for the Viera High School Athletic Department, the Special Olympics and the Early Steps program. It also made Acosta into a runner.
years ago
The next step was to launch Power of Pizza Charities, or POP, a nonprofit with a full annual schedule of fundraisers. Pizza is Acosta’s love, but he also loves giving back. Viera Pizza is not your average pizzeria, beginning with the location. With the support of Mobil gas station owner Naweed Akram and Z. Baber, Acosta was able to expand from the original tiny take-out

location in the former storage room of a gas station at the corner of Viera Boulevard and Murrell Road to its current site at 5450 Stadium Parkway. It still is attached to a Mobil, but in name only. Half of the physical facility is the pizzeria, which seats 40 and has plenty of room for the pizzeria’s fabled giant 24inch pizzas. Pizzeria patrons should be ecstatic this month since Acosta plans to feature several specials. “We have some unbelievable deals,” he said. Viera Pizza isn’t all about pizza, either. Wings are popular, given that guests can choose from 15 different sauce flavors and three dry rubs. Gyros are popular, too, including the loaded french fry gyro. The menu also features entrees such as chicken cordon bleu pasta. A new line of dessert pizzas with flaky pastry crust and flavors such as s’mores adds another tasty dimension to the dining experience. Acosta lives and breathes Viera. His most current labor of love is helping to fund the Back the Track Project, which will refurbish the Viera High School track. “As Viera grows, we want to grow along,” Acosta said. “We’re super blessed to be here.” For more information, call 321-636-7696 or go to vierapizza.com. The American Advertising Federation of the Space Coast is building Buzz Crow out of recycled materials to honor the 5 th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon mission.
Eco friendly Bu Crow will make appearance at Harvest Festival BY ERNEST ARICO Patrons visiting The Avenue Viera for the eighth annual Harvest Festival will get to see some very creative scarecrows — including one that will be completely ecofriendly. Buzz Crow, an astronaut made from all recycled plastic materials, will be one of the displayed scarecrows from the American Advertising Federation of the Space Coast. “The scarecrow is being made out of all recycled plastic — plastic bottles, plastic caps, plastic bags and pvc pipe,” said Stephanie Byrd, the marketing manager for The Viera Company and president-elect of the AAFSC board for 2019-2020. Besides the scarecrow displays, other attractions at the Oct. 19 Harvest Festival include a pumpkin patch, zucchini racing, hay bale horses, face painting, a fun fall photo area and live music. Since this is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon mission, Byrd said it was relevant and timely to use a space theme for their scarecrow. Byrd said the astronaut/ scarecrow design was inspired by the work of artist Sayaka Ganz, whose artwork is currently being showcased in the lobby of the Exploration

Tower in Port Canaveral. “Sayaka Ganz is an artist that I admire along with others who commit to making an honest statement about the beauty we can always find within any artistic medium used to showcase life,” Byrd said. “We will be using only plastic to create this piece. Just keep in mind that plastic is used to make many, many things and we hope to use the Ganz style to underline the ability to build a scarecrow out of reusable everyday objects, Byrd added. “We will have a final build event on Oct. 10 at 28 North and we are inviting all our members to participate by bringing a clean, white plastic element to attach to our astronaut from their reuse containers. I will be doing my best to create a list of everything that was used to create the astronaut. Many hours went into its creation, but it has been a real learning experience,” she concluded. The AAFSC is a local club and part of a nationwide network of 40,000 members, promoting positive awareness of the advertising industry while fostering professional growth for its members. The club continually provides unique opportunities for members to share ideas, engage with experts and give

Buzz Aldrin's astronaut suit was the inspiration for Buzz Crow. It will not be part of the Scarecrow Stroll, but it will be on display at the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber in Viera from Oct. 2 to 1 . back to the community while protecting the advertising industry on all levels. Byrd said the club’s focus on community connections for the 2019-20 year will include volunteering at beautification events, hosting a spring Innovations in advertising panel for nonprofits, and hosting several
unique networking events with leading advertising and marketing professionals in the area. Our district-wide community service initiative this year is plastic. The AAFSC club also will encourage their members and others to participate in a statewide-led event Nov. 9 that includes beach, lagoon
and lake clean-ups where it is safe to do so. “We are excited to be participating in this project and the ongoing events throughout the year. One cleanup event will not move the needle but hundreds will make a profound difference,” said Scott Eller, the AAFSC chapter president. VV

Space Coast Ophthalmology opens new Viera practice BY MARIA SONNENBERG A name familiar to Titusville patients seeking state-of-the-art eye care — Space Coast Ophthalmology — added a new practice in Viera which opened in early September. The new facility at 2328 Medico Lane offers a comprehensive range of services, including treatment for cataracts, dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye diseases, pediatric eye exams, ocular nutrition, eye infections and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). LASIK/PRK surgery also will be offered in the near future. Of course, the practice also performs routine eye exams, as well as exams for contact lenses. Dry eye, which causes irritation, redness, burning and stinging, is one of the most common complaints the specialists treat. “Depending on the severity, we start with artificial lubricating drops, prescription drops (Xiidra, Restasis), punctal occlusion and dry eye amniotic membranes,” said Valerie Clark, director of business development for Space Coast Ophthalmology. AmbioDisk, a new treatment for dry eye, is
about the size of a small contact lens that contains an amniotic membrane with regenerative properties to heal the eyes, soothe pain and improve vision. The disk, which is inserted and removed during an office visit, is placed on the cornea and kept in place with a soft contact lens for a five- to seven-day period, during which the nutrients in the disk dissolve into the cornea. The nutrients bring the eye back to normal state, so eye drops and other treatments can be more effective. In addition to treating dry eye, AmbioDisk also can be used to treat non-healing epithelial corneal defects, corneal erosions caused by dry eyes, acute chemical/ thermal burns and eye infections. Another issue commonly treated at Space Coast Ophthalmology are cataracts. r. icholas Pefkaros, who heads the practice, was recently trained in the ORA System, a sophisticated device that provides real time measurements of the patient’s eye during cataract surgery in order to provide more precise surgery. “At any point during the procedure, r. Pefkaros can take a measurement, which is then analyzed by the ORA System,” Clark said.
The technology has been clinically proven to improve outcomes for LASIK and astigmatism patients. Pefkaros graduated magna cum laude from Jefferson Medical College
and Ithaca College and is a diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Space Coast Ophthalmology’s new Viera practice is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays,
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays. For more information, call 321-267-0008 or go to SpaceCoastOphthalmology. com. V V

The Viera East Men's Golf Association tees off at 8 a.m. each Thursday. On Sept. 12, VEMA had four-man teams in a twobest balls format. The team of Robbie Rosenberger, David Hill, Craig Smith and Bill Oakley finished first. Bob Urban, John Moriarty, Ernie Parra and a blind draw placed second. The Viera area is home to plenty of seniors, but how many can say that they’re a centenarian? On Sept. 12, The Brennity at Melbourne Senior Living hosted a 1940s- and 1950s-themed party. Janice Byrne’s 100th birthday party was the highlight of the festivities. Byrne is a resident at The Brennity. While Byrne’s birthday wasn’t until Sept. 19, The Brennity decided to combine the previously scheduled 1940s and 1950s party with Byrne’s birthday. She already had a planned vacation for the following week. “I’m very excited. I can’t believe the people here,” Byrne said. “(It’s) unbelievable. They have

The party was held in a large dining room with themed decorations throughout. A musician played background music. A cake was brought out for Byrne which read, “Happy 100th Birthday, Janice.” After taking a pause to make a wish, Byrne blew VIERA VOICE Austin Rushnell out the candles. s there a future for glass recycling in Brevard County Glass can be recycled forever without compromising the quality of the material. Recycling glass saves 30 percent of energy and eliminates the need to use new sand — something we need in our beaches — to produce new glass. So why is there even a question about
the future of glass recycling? Currently, commercial recycling contracts exclude glass from recycling collection and glass is deemed to be a contaminant in single stream recycling. “Broken glass can stick to paper and cardboard, contaminating those materials,” said Brittany

tons of glass per year and is actively looking for glass suppliers, assure that is one of the myths around glass recycling. Other myths listed by Laura Hennemann, a Strategic Materials vice president of marketing and communication, in recyclingtoday.com include: “Broken glass and mixed glass can’t be recycled. Glass must be washed and cleaned. Glass contaminates other recyclables. Glass can’t be recycled due to China’s National Sword policy. Glass has no end market.” She adds that “MRFs are cutting glass from curbside recycling programs to cut processing costs or because they don’t have the proper equipment to clean the glass. … Demand for recycled glass exceeds supply.” Strategic Materials executive vice president Curt Bucey said in an interview with Public Opinion (publicopiniononline.com) that the problem is not with the markets for recycled glass, but rather the quality of the glass coming in to be recycled, which is mixed with metals, ceramics, gravel and stones. “The glass container industry for alcoholic beverages is stable at 1 percent annual growth, and the fiberglass industry is growing at 5 percent,” Bucey said, but the more “garbage” in the glass, the lower the price the company pays for the glass. The city of Houston partnered with Strategic Materials to offer glass recycling through drop-off bins at public spaces, such as city parks, while suspending glass collection from their curbside program to “cut costs of processing lower value glass.” The city is looking to
BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth
President & Founder, Recycle Brevard
reintroduce glass recycling to their curbside program once a new MRF with the equipment to clean and process glass, being built by FCC Environmental Services, Northampton, United Kingdom, is operational. Others are opting for a mix of glass recycling methods from source separation at the facility to dual stream collection. With the recycling services contract for unincorporated Brevard County coming to an end in October 2020, glass recycling has become kind of the talk of the town and a concern to many. In the current contract that Waste Management has with Brevard, glass must be collected for recycling. It has been collected but, for business decisions, most glass is being landfilled. In a new contract, there is a possibility that glass will no longer be accepted in our curbside program. It will be up to the county to negotiate the contract and find alternative solutions for glass waste, if not part of the new contract. According to recyclinginternational. com, in a global market that is expected to reach $3.7 billion by 2025 with a robust compound annual growth rate of 6.6 percent in the period of 2019-2025, the future of glass recycling in Brevard is in the hands of our local government. Problematic pests still integral part of food chain Spinning tales about insect pests. Beautiful birds and butterflies invade Florida. Unfortunately, so do insect pests. Mole crickets are gray to brownish subterranean insects, typically more than 1 inch long. They damage turf grass and crops. Equipped with modified front legs, they tunnel through soil leaving bulges like moles. Brown patches appear after roots have been severed. More damage occurs in the spring or fall. Regrettably, predators such as armadillos feed on them and further destroy lawns. Chinch bugs display black bodies with mostly white wings and might reach 1/5-inch long. They also damage lawns, especially St.
Augustine grass when it is water stressed or in full sun. Again, brown patches cannot be restored. Biting midges (no-seeums) are 1 to 3 millimeters long, small enough to enter homes through screens. They resemble small black specks of dirt. Only females feed on blood, which is needed for their eggs. Attracting them are heat and carbon dioxide from humans or increased levels of lactic acid odors from people
exercising. Bites (actually released acidic fluids) are usually on exposed legs and forearms. Activity occurs especially during warm months around dusk. Painful welts might appear hours or days after contact and last weeks. Silverfish are wingless and agile horizontal runners. Comparable to fish, they are silver with a tapered abdomen and wiggling movements. They frequent dark, damp areas such as bathrooms or storage boxes in garages. Among their favorite items are bookbinding glue, along with paper pages left in lacy remains — bookworms. Wallpaper also is destroyed for the glue. With water availability, silverfish can
survive more than a year without food. Love bugs are black with a red area behind the head. In fact, they are flies. They migrated from Central America and identified in Texas in 1940. They are harmless to humans, but not to their cars. Florida is invaded by love bugs around May and September, experiencing four-week mating peaks. Activity ensues around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in temperatures above 84 degrees. Generally mating and locked in a pair, they collide with a vehicle’s front surfaces while seeking heat from highways or confusing exhaust fumes with appealing decomposing plants. Acidic remains
might damage vehicle paint. Other possible targets are surfaces, which are lightcolored and freshly painted such as garage doors. Instead of poisons, natural biological control is beneficial. For example, utilizing special nematodes, wasps or flies kills mole crickets. As for chinch bugs, homeowners can thatch lawns and reduce fertilizer as a safe alternative to pesticides which these bugs resist. Nevertheless, problematic pests are indispensable as part of the food chain. They nourish many essential creatures such as birds, which disperse seeds. V V
Butterflies, snook thrive in the ndian River agoon
Marine biologists say the Indian River Lagoon is one of the most diverse water bodies in the country. What do they mean? Two creatures that live there can provide an explanation. Great southern white butterflies are found in coastal areas of Florida, along the Gulf and Atlantic to Texas and south through tropical America to Argentina. They are oyster white, at times translucent or green and shimmery. In Florida, these butterflies might migrate several times a year, flying 20 to 0 miles in two days or less. They usually migrate when temperatures are in the 70s or hotter — often in May. Huge shoreline migrations often can be seen along the Indian River Lagoon or near A1A. It is a luminous and memorable site. The Great Southern
Lagoon Straight Talk From the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition
White male butterflies have a lifespan of about five days and females live eight to 10 days. They can be seen on lantana and verbena. Be careful where you step when observing them to preserve their important sources of nectar. Snook are among the most prized game fish. They are known for the powerful fighting instincts that thrill sports fishermen. Snook are delicious and sought after by anglers at the Indian River Lagoon. Winter months are the best time to catch snook in the Indian River Lagoon, Sebastian River and Mosquito Lagoon.

Snook are among the most prized game fish in the Indian River Lagoon.
There are five species of snook in the Indian River Lagoon — the only place where all five can be found. They are easily identifiable by the dark black line that runs the length of their body on each side and the high divided dorsal fin. Their pike-like body is
light in color, with silver sides and belly and yellowish-green tail and fins. Ocean snook tend to be more silver, while those found in the Indian River Lagoon are darker. Snook can live to be 20 years old and reach a length of up to 50 inches. A littleknown fact is that they can
change their gender from male to female as the need arises. When they mature, snook migrate to inlets and nearshore waters to spawn during the summer months. VV For more information, go to HelpTheLagoon.org or Facebook.com/BIRLC.

reat Tastes at Suntree returns for another delicious outing
BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL
It’s time once again for the annual Great Tastes at Suntree event from the Rotary Club of Suntree, and the club is gearing up for a year that’s going to be “bigger than ever.” On Oct. 19, the Rotary Club of Suntree will host its 16th annual Great Tastes at Suntree event to be held at the Rotary clubhouse. This year, the Great Tastes at Suntree will feature food from a variety
of different local eateries — approximately 30 so far. There will be a live band to entertain guests, and each of the vendors will compete to win a contest for bestdecorated booth and best food, so be sure to try each of the tables. The 16th annual Great Tastes at Suntree event is not only a great time out, it’s also for a good cause. “The event supports several worthwhile local charities,” officials said in a news release,

Tickets can be purchased online at a link featured on the club’s website — suntreerotary. org/2019/05/30/16th-
