The simple tasks were a burden. The pain was continuous. My husband studied about the stem cell procedure and we decided that this was what I was meant to try. Much prayers and consideration went into this decision. The results have been amazing. My mobility came as soon as the procedure was finished. I am walking without pain. Tigers hoping to improve on last year’s historic season BY CARL KOTALA How do you follow up the best season in school history? By topping it, of course. And that’s exactly what the Holy Trinity football team is hoping to do after winning the first playoff game in program history last year. “I think last year’s success made us even better for this year because it made us (want to) do better than what we did last year,” senior running back Larry Hill said. “The buzz is kind of the same as we all (want to) do our job just like last year, but at the same time, we know what we’re capable of if we all do our job.” The Tigers, who open the season with at least four consecutive road games while waiting for construction of the Tiger Athletic Complex to be completed, believe they have the speed to give opponents fits. “We’re loaded at the skill positions,” Holy Trinity coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “I think that’s no secret. back Kevin Chandler; wide receiver Demetrius “Meech” Robinson; wide receiver Trey Palmer and wide receiver James BlackStrain. Ranked No. 179 on ESPN’s Junior 300 list, BlackStrain is still recovering from a knee injury sustained during
basketball season. There is no timetable for his return, but if the Tigers can get him back, it will add to an already explosive offense that also features Carlos Estronza in the slot. The offensive line will be led by four-year starter Rico
Frazier, along with transfer Nick Greene; Joe BlackStrain; Thomas Wadsworth; Benji Nicks; Rod Thomas and Timmy Nunno. Defensively, the Tigers

Tigers set their eyes on district title, return to regional final BY CARL KOTALA When you return nine players — including the program’s all-time leading assist leader — from a team that went to its third consecutive regional final last season, the idea of getting back there for a fourth consecutive year doesn’t seem so far-fetched. “We’re young, but we have
a lot of dedication,” senior setter Emily Noe said. “Most of us know the way it goes on varsity, and we all know each other pretty well. Our one new person (Sophia Panarese), we’ve played with her before so we have a really good connection. “I think it’s going to work out well for us.” Noe, who became Holy Trinity’s all-time assist leader

last season, will be looking to add to her career total of 2,137, but the Tigers’ offense figures to look different in several different ways. With all-time kills leader Laura Boos having graduated, Holy Trinity not only lost its main offensive weapon, but also a good deal of height. Junior Mackenzie Sands and senior Shelby Seage are the tallest players on this year’s team at 5-foot-11, which means the Tigers are not only going to have to distribute the ball more, but it also makes ball control and offensive tempo that much more important. “I think you’re going to see a lot more distributed offense,” Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski said. “Last year, we had a player we depended on quite a bit. This year, I think you’re going to see the numbers spread out, so the kills will be more evenly distributed. “We’ve got people that are capable at all the positions. One of the wrinkles we’re looking at is having Emily Noe attack when she’s in the front row and run a second setter. We haven’t done that in the three years she’s been here.” In addition to Noe, Sands and Seage, the other returners
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
for Holy Trinity this year are Carmen Zipf; Olivia Yochim; Kayla Burge; Taylor Mullen; Cassie Martin and Layla Matthews. The players' familiarity with each other should be an advantage. “I think that’s one of the most important strengths,” Noe said. “We all communicate well together since we’ve all played together. We have really good chemistry.” While getting back to the regional final — and beyond
— is one of the goals for the Tigers this season, so is winning a seventh consecutive district championship. If Holy Trinity can control the ball on first contact and get into its offense quickly, the Tigers could once again be looking at a deep postseason run. “I think the girls are excited,” Klonowski said. “I’m excited to get back into it. I’m looking forward to it. I think we’re going to be able to accomplish some really good things this year.” VV

Viera volleyball feeding off new energy around program with postseason seeding now being determined by MaxPrep rankings, the Hawks’ schedule has a different look this season. The Cape Coast Conference, which had been split into a North and South division, is now just one division. In addition, Wayne has scheduled the Hawks to play some of the state’s perennial title contenders
BY CARL KOTALA Every season is different, of course, but if you ask the coaches and players on the Viera High volleyball team, this season … feels different. “I’m super excited for this season,” senior Delaney Lott said. “I think it’s going to be not like any other I’ve had in my four years. “We have a different energy and we have new girls to the team that I think are going to bring us up to the next level.” Viera had 70 girls at tryouts for this season, giving the team depth not just on the varsity level, but on the JV and freshman levels as well. During the summer, coach Sarah Wayne took some players to a tournament in Tampa where they competed against some of the best teams in the state and held their own. “I’m really excited,” Wayne said. “The program as a whole is one of the strongest we’ve ever had. … It just feels different this year.” Lott, a four-year varsity player, is one of six seniors on this year’s team. She’s joined by Madi Hintz, Makena Wagner, Marisa Hulmes, Chloe Arellano and Taylor

— and winners — with a game at Bishop Moore and a tournament in Venice. “Our goals are really high this year,” said Wayne, who listed winning the CCC title and the district tournament among them. “Every year, we always say that. But there’s just something about this squad and the overall feeling (around the program).” VV

Callaway. “I can’t remember, off the top of my head, the last time I had that many seniors,” Wayne said. “That just shows the maturity level of this team. “All the years of playing, not only for me, but in the offseason and club … the expectations that they’ve had and the growth that they’ve seen this team do kind of anchor those expectations of winning and that culture.” In addition to the seniors, the Hawks also have two sophomore returners in Kelly
Merz and Hannah Bradford. Junior Savannah Reiser is also back along with junior Lauren Lewis, who was brought up from the JV team late last year. The Hawks also will benefit from the play of transfer Hailey Leitem and freshman Sydney Williams, who had seven blocks and five kills in her debut last month. awks believe state title game is in the future BY CARL KOTALA It’s been four years since the Viera High School football team played for the Class 7A state championship. And the Hawks have been trying to get back there ever since. “Everybody always asks that question … what’s your measuring stick?” Viera coach Derek Smith said. “And everybody wants to say, ‘I want to get better than the last game.’ No. My measuring stick is, did we get to the state championship (game) or not? If we didn’t, then I need to keep working to do it.” The Hawks are feeling pretty good about their chances to get back to this year’s title game, and they have some big reasons why. Cooper Davis, Jamari Lyons, Jackson Hatfield and JuJu Barfield — along with Tyler Cooley — form a defensive line that could be among the best in the state. On the other side of the ball, Andrew Hart, Cooper Liston, Tyler Matas, Colben Maher, Justin Humpries and Brady Touzet will combine to give Viera a talented offensive line that should open up some running lanes for running backs T.J. Johnson and Jalen Housey. Quarterback Bryce Norton is coming off a sophomore season in which he passed for more than 3,000 yards and ran for more than 1,000, becoming the first
quarterback to accomplish that feat since Tim Tebow in 2005. The biggest question mark going into this season will be at receiver after the graduation of recordbreakers Sean Atkins and Shamaar Mohr. The Hawks will look to newcomer Davis Mallinger along with Caleb Osburn, Jeremiah Housey, Donovan Giles and Jarvelle Francis to fill the void. Defensively, Danny Steen will lead a linebacking group that includes Zach Taylor, D’Andre Lewis, Connor Kennedy and Jalen Housey. Sedaros, who had a chance to learn from some upper classmen last year, will anchor a secondary that includes Kato Holmes and Bryce Reynolds. “I’ve learned a lot, especially from (former teammate) Garrett Kaminski, as far as communicating, knowing the calls, knowing what we need to be in to be successful and not give up big plays,” Sedaros said. “You’ve got to make sure everybody’s on the same page. You’ve got to communicate. I enjoy doing that a lot.” If the defensive line plays the way it’s capable of, it should help make Viera’s linebackers and secondary more effective. And with opposing offenses expected to pay a lot of attention to Davis, a Missouri commit who had 21 sacks last season, it could free up
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Barfield to have a monster season on the other side. “I’ve improved a lot,” Barfield said. “I would say my hands and my speed off the ball have gotten way faster than they were last year.” With a strong defense and an offense that should get better as the year goes on, the Hawks believe this could be the year they get another crack at a state title, though they play in one of the state’s toughest classifications. Defending state champion Lakeland and traditional
powerhouse Armwood — new to Class 7A this season — are both in Viera’s region. “I think we can go there because the way we are on the field, we’re really aggressive,” Barfield said.
TIGERS
plan to line up with Frazier, Joe BlackStrain, Greene and Nicks on the line, Estronza, Nunno and Palmer at linebacker and Jonathan Bailey, Hudgins, Jadon Gowins and Chandler in the secondary. In addition to going deeper into the playoffs, the Tigers will have a chance to show they’re one of the better programs in the county when they face Space Coast, Eau Gallie and Cocoa
“We watch our film. We pay attention to the game. We’re really focused. We all have the determination and the will to go there. “… I think we can.” VV in the regular season. “We have always felt that we should be higher ranked in the county and now (we’re going to) play some of those higher ranked teams and get a chance to really see and show how we stack up against them,” Hill said. While Hooks said he wants his team to remember how good last season felt, he has reminded his players this is a new year. “We’ll find out what kind of program we have coming off of the playoff season,” he said. avis calls Viera A position her ‘end-all, be-all’ job BY CARL KOTALA When you really look at it, Maggie Davis’ life at Viera High School has come full circle. Once a basketball standout at the school, the 25 year old came back last season to teach physical sciences and coach the girls basketball team. Now, she’s the school’s new athletic director. “I have seen the perspective of a studentathlete, not in (any) high school, but at this very school,” Davis said. “I have seen the perspective of a head coach. I have seen the perspective of a teacher. “All those steps were building blocks that led me to success in this position. This is my home. I know it’s cheesy, but I really do bleed green and gold and I plan to be here until the day I retire.” Davis, who took over after Chris Gallagher left to take a job in Michigan, said she enjoyed getting a chance to see athletics from a different side while serving as a graduate assistant to the AD at Valdosta State University while she worked on her master’s degree. She was planning on working in the college athletic department when then-Viera principal Mike Alba called and said the school was looking
for a teacher and a girls basketball coach. The 2012 Viera High graduate thoroughly enjoyed her year in the classroom, and as a coach, but decided to go for the AD job when it became available. “This is truly my end-all, be-all,” she said. “This was my dream job that I was fortunate enough to get many years before I thought I would. I went into the (job) interview with a I-have-nothing-tolose attitude because I truly love this school. I loved my teaching position. “It was a win-win either way. I couldn’t not go for it, and if I didn’t get it, I was still going to be just as happy in that classroom.” Davis credited Viera High principal Sarah Robinson, assistant AD Cheryl Draves and the rest of Viera’s staff for helping her feel comfortable in her new role. “The first few days have been overwhelming to say the least, but in the most positive manner,” Davis said. “I have truly enjoyed every minute of this position. It’s an adjustment from not being in the classroom and being in a different role, but I’m touching their lives in a different aspect. “I think watching the development of our studentathletes, watching them grow, will be so rewarding.” VV

SCHOOL
Viera seniors show artistic side in painting parking spots BY RN ST ARICO
For the first time in the 14-year history of Viera High School, one of the school’s newest “traditions” sold out – seniors painting their designated parking spaces. Jeff Draves, a Viera High social studies teacher and senior class sponsor, said it was the first time in the school’s history that every available parking spot — 150 — was sold. “We even sold an additional 10 more spots in the overflow parking lot,” he said. Draves, who is beginning his 14th year at VHS, said the students paid $20 to reserve a parking spot, and then paid an additional $20 to paint the concrete parking pylon. Draves said he enjoys doing senior class events and added the money raised will be used to pay for the senior prom, graduation and the Grad Bash at Universal Studios.
“I think we sold out this year because they want to be seniors and are very proud to be Senior Hawks,” he said. The tradition was held Aug. 9 when seniors were allowed to express their own creativity and paint their designated parking spaces. Makena Wagner, 17, of Viera, said she wanted to be part of the tradition. She painted her concreate pylon with shamrocks because “I’m super Irish,” she said. Isabella Tirado, 17, of Suntree, wanted to express how she feels. “I’m a huge artist,” she said. “I want to show people how I can draw. It’s entertaining.” Owen King, 17, of Melbourne, said he wanted his space to include special memories of his times at VHS, especially his varsity baseball career. “It’s fun. It’s a good thing for all the seniors,” he said. Victoria Pugliese, 17, of Suntree, said she was inspired to paint her space by

the stain glass window seen in the Disney movie, “Beauty and the Beast.” Julie Walker, 17, of Suntree, wanted to add a “personal touch” to her space. “I want to personalize it because it’s my senior year,” she said. Marcus Westley, 17, who recently moved to Viera from Colorado, thought it was
“pretty cool and different” that seniors get to paint their own parking spot. Faith Wallace, 18, of Merritt Island, who wants to be a structural engineer, was helped by her parents, Staci and Chris Wallace, in painting a mosaic design to her pylon. “It’s a rite of passage — to drive to school and get your own parking
spot,” she said. Dravers said the program will raise more than $3,200 for future senior class events. The tradition also included another first — a concession stand that sold drinks, hot dogs and hamburgers. “We really wanted to make it an event, a real party atmosphere,” Dravers said.V V

Torlak Link oin Viera igh School’s administration BY CARL KOTALA There are some new faces among the administrators at Viera High School this year. Naim Torlak and Stephen Link have joined the staff as the school’s new assistant principals/deans. While the first few weeks of school can be a little chaotic, both men said they have been enjoying their time at Viera. “Everybody’s very welcoming, very warm and very helpful,” said the 42-year-old Torlak. “They seem very happy to be here and very proud of being part of Viera, as we are, too.” Both men have engineering and coaching backgrounds. Link, 38, was at Heritage High School for the previous 10 years, where he taught math, served as the school’s testing coordinator and also coached boys basketball. Prior to that, he was at Bayside for five years and also worked for the Harris Corporation.
He said the idea of coming to Viera was enticing because of, “the chance to be at a school with a community like this and the chance to work with Mrs. (Sarah) Robinson, who is a great, young principal. “I just really wanted to get involved with a community like Viera.” Torlak, meanwhile, spent the previous 14 years at Bayside, where he taught math and science, coached soccer, and also sponsored the school’s rocket club. The two men join a Viera High School administration led by Robinson that also includes Tim Rooney, Heather Smith and Paloma Ferreira. “Both of them bring with them experiences that I think are going to support our students, support our teachers,” Robinson said. “They’re each going to be overseeing the departments that are their backgrounds, so Mr. Torlak is going to oversee science and Mr. Link is going to oversee math.

Only five students in the state were chosen for the squad. Montalvo was the first Holy Trinity student to qualify for the Florida team. He was required to attend multiple practices and a training camp during the summer with other students from Florida. The Florida

eputy outlines rules about golf cart use in Suntree Viera BY RN ST ARICO Golf carts operating within Suntree and Viera must comply with Florida statutes and Brevard County ordinances or face fines and other penalties. That was the message from Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy John Martinez during a presentation Aug. 9 at the GolfCarts Unlimited store at

Martinez explained that golf carts can be used on neighboring streets within Suntree and Viera, but are not allowed on roads having a posted speed limit above 30 miles per hour. Family donates $14 million toward aquarium project BY RN ST ARICO A Central Florida family has agreed to donate $14 million to help the Brevard Zoo’s dream of developing and building an aquarium. The $70 to $100 million aquarium project could open as early as fall 2022 on a 14acre site at Port Canaveral, according to Keith Winsten, the Brevard Zoo’s executive director. Winsten declined to identify the family making the donation, but plans to release it soon. Previously, the zoo received a financial commitment totaling $10 million from Brevard County for the aquarium project, through revenue generated by the county's 5 percent Tourist Development Tax on hotel rooms and other shortterm rentals. The aquarium would focus on conservation of the Indian River Lagoon’s natural
features, as well as tell the stories of the region's history, including space launches, sport fishing, shrimping, beaches, the port and other factors related to the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Johns River. “We think this will help us reach critical mass in terms of tourism opportunities in Brevard County, said Winsten in a video interview with the Viera Voice. The aquarium would be located on undeveloped land south of State Road 528 on the south side of the port. The port signed a letter of intent for the development agreement with the zoo, under which the port would provide up to $3.5 million in infrastructure improvements benefiting the Banana River-area parcel on which the aquarium would be located. This would include improvements to George King Boulevard, an extension of water and sewer lines, and
stormwater connections. “We imagine the aquarium to be a part of the Brevard Zoo family and managed by the same group . . . but offer a completely different experience,” Winsten continued. “It will up our ability to connect with people and bring tourists here.” Under the agreement, the rent the zoo would pay the port to lease the property would be on a sliding scale, based on annual paid attendance figures for the
aquarium. Winsten said the zoo is preparing to kick off its private fundraising efforts for the aquarium project. The plan calls for having three categories of funding for the aquarium: • $20 million in private individual and corporate contributions, including the $14 million gift. Winsten said this donation was not solicited by the zoo. He said the family decided to make the donation after reading
news stories about the project. • $20 million in public funding, including the $10 million from Tourist Development Tax revenue. • $30 million through financing, based on future anticipated revenue from aquarium admission fees. Winsten said he expects the aquarium to attract 525,000 to 690,000 visitors

rake s wildlife paintings highlight reopening of Art Gallery of Viera BY JUDY BERMAN Vibrant, bright colors capture artist Jeanette Drake’s watercolor paintings of nature, flowers and wildlife. Drake will be the first featured exhibitor when the Art Gallery of Viera reopens in September at The Avenue. It’s the details that make those paintings memorable. Drake’s website (artbyjdrake. com) provides many samples of her attention to detail: There’s the engaging charm of Thor as he spreads the bright blue feathers of his wings. Thor II, a Hyacinth Macaw, is always ready to chat up visitors at the Brevard Zoo. Or, try the bold gaze of Phil, a jaguar at the Brevard Zoo. That painting by Drake won first place in watercolor in an annual Titusville Spring Show. These paintings on Drake’s website are just a sample of the life she adds to the subjects she paints. Drake, 73, was one of the previous owners of the Art Gallery of Viera, which closed in 2018. She and Helen Wheatley, the last two owners, sold it to Jill Blue, the publisher of Senior Life and Viera Voice. “I’m excited the Art Gallery is continuing. I didn’t want it to end,” Drake said.

Smith brings lifetime of e perience to new Viera practice
BY MARIA SONNENBERG You could say that Dr. Yale Smith is a Renaissance physician, for, unlike many specialists, he has experience in a broad range of aspects of the medical field. His 33 years in medicine include a career in plastic surgery, which led Smith to do research in it before he transferred his focus to clinical medicine. He later switched to anesthesiology because this aspect of medicine allowed him to do both technical and critical decisions for the patient. Smith also is well acquainted with medicine from the patient’s perspective after a bout with swine flu left him in intensive care for six weeks and almost killed him not once, but twice.
“I coded twice and spent six weeks in a coma and five weeks in a rehabilitation hospital learning how to walk again,” said the Rockledge physician. The illness required two years of extensive outpatient rehabilitation and affected his lungs to such a degree that he was forced to retire from practicing anesthesiology. Smith’s latest chapter in his long medical career is the unique practice he will open Sept. 9 at 7000 Spyglass Ct., Suite 300, in Viera. The Center for Antiaging Aesthetic and Rejuvenation Medicine will be a boutique one-stop practice that will help patients regain their health and their looks. “We are specializing in an integrated approach to health solutions,” Smith said.
The practice will offer integrative and functional medicine, along with agemanagement modalities. The Center will treat issues such as cardiovascular and lipid abnormality disease processes, metabolic syndrome, nutrition, diabetes, male erectile dysfunction, bioidentical hormone replacement, gastrointestinal disease, sleep disorders, autoimmune problems and other issues. Within the Center is the Aura MedSpa, which will offer state-of-the-art rejuvenative procedures, as well as top-of-the-line anti-aging products favored by Hollywood elite such as Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry. Smith started his journey in medicine with an interest

in plastic surgery. After medical school, he received a research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, one of the top plastic surgery programs in the nation. At age 28, Temple University in Philadelphia hired him as director of research, but the lure of hands-on medicine lured him back and he accepted a surgical residency at Memorial Health System in Georgia. Anesthesiology also interested him, so he switched gears and attended Vanderbilt University, the “Harvard of the South.” He eventually transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami to be closer to his
father, who had contracted a rare form of cancer. “My father was and remains my best friend, father and brother, but he passed away in 1999 from cancer,” Smith said. For 26 years, he served as an anesthesiologist around the country. A bout with swine flu, which he contracted while working at a hospital, put him in a coma. After extensive recuperation and rehabilitation, Smith began questioning why he had been spared. He decided to devote the rest of his career to functional and integrative medicine. This “joined discipline” helps re-establish an individual’s physiology by analyzing outside factors that impact health. Treatment modalities are more natural and less intrusive than in mainstream medicine. “It’s the fastest growing medical specialty in the world,” Smith said. The Center for Antiaging Aesthetic and Rejuvenation Medicine will hold a Health Fair from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. For more information, call 321-421-7111 or go to AntiAging IM.com. VV

Chamber of Commerce moves to new digs in Viera BY MARIA SONNENBERG Pencil in Sept. 9 between 4 and 6 p.m. to spend some time at the new Viera offices of the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We’re having the official ribbon cutting then and
invite the public to come see us,” said Jennifer Sugarman, the Chamber president and CEO. What, you might ask, is the Cocoa Beach Chamber doing in Viera? The answer is quite a lot. Note that the chamber includes “Regional”
in its official title, and as such represents a wide swath of Central Brevard County businesses and counts approximately 1,500 businesses located anywhere from Mims to Palm Bay in its membership. While named the Cocoa Beach Chamber
Is it true that Varicose Veins are a sign of a medical issue? Yes. Please do not ignore signs of leg varicose veins. If you notice bulging veins, you have a significant medical condition. Bulging indicates a chronic medical condition. Constant dilation causes blood to stop blood flow back through the legs, leading to further damage. primarily as a nod to its history, the chamber’s main office is on Merritt Island. An additional satellite office is at Port Canaveral. There has been a Viera connection for many years, long before the chamber had a physical presence in the area. “We have a long history with Viera and the Duda family,” Sugarman said. “Fifteen percent of our partners are from the area.” The chamber moved to Viera five years ago, but the lease expired in the original offices and the time was right to move. “We’re really excited to maintain our presence in Viera,” Sugarman said. The new offices will offer plenty of educational seminars for local businesses, with programming that ranges
from developing social media savviness to the “Four Rs of Networking.” For the general public, the chamber hosts special events such as the Homegrown Health and Wellness Expo, held annually on the first Saturday in October at the Avenue Viera. The free day-long event includes vendors, healthy meals, demonstrations, yoga, prize drawings, health education and a healthy happy hour. The Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Viera office is at 6729 Colonnade Ave., Suite 111. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Clubhouse renovations top pro ect for Viera ast Golf Club BY RN ST ARICO Officials hope a major overhaul to the 25-year-old clubhouse at the Viera East Golf Club will enhance the golfing experience for Viera East Community Development District residents and guests. The clubhouse renovation, estimated at $2.9 million, is part of several projects proposed under the $11 million bond unanimously approved July 25 by the five members of the VECDD’s Board of Supervisors. Timothy A. Melloh, general manager and chief operating officer for the Viera East Golf Club and VECDD, said the clubhouse
renovations also will include a community restaurant with a private dining room and covered patio seating. “The vision of the restaurant is to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner in a setting with beautiful views of the sunset overlooking the golf course,” Melloh wrote in an email. “The current grille is basically a snack bar with a 72-square foot kitchen that is hard to produce food service for large parties and golf

tournaments.” Melloh said other improvements to the clubhouse include: • Golf operations: A larger golf shop with updated decor for enhanced merchandise sales and golfer registration to accommodate the 52,000 rounds of golf annually. • Improved men’s and women’s restrooms: Enlarged restrooms and locker area with updated decor to accommodate the 52,000 rounds of golf annually. • CDD offices: A new conference room and reception area to better conduct VECDD business, also with updated decor. The conference room will be available to all residents of the VECDD. • Food and beverage operation: A brand new kitchen and service area, a brand new private dining area, a brand new covered patio seating and enhancements to the current dining room. Melloh added there are some “behind the scenes” upgrades to the clubhouse structure that are needed to meet today’s building codes. During last month’s public
hearing, Melloh defended the bond and the proposed renovations to the clubhouse and golf course because it was time to upgrade the facility. “It’s been 25 years since we started and many areas are well past their life expectancy,” he said. “We need to make the improvements to stay competitive with other area golf courses.” The Viera East Golf Club was constructed by the Viera Company in 1994 as a focal point and amenity to the development. It was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Joe Lee, who also has designed many top courses throughout the country, including Disney Palms, Disney Magnolia, Disney Lake Buena Vista, Doral Blue Monster and the NCR Country Club. Each year, the golf course hosts more than 50,000 rounds of golf and is considered one of the best facilities in Brevard County and Central Florida. The golf course operates off the funds generated through greens fees, cart fees, membership fees, trail fees, merchandise sales, driving range sales, restaurant lease and golf instruction leases. VECDD residents receive a 25 percent discount on the daily rates for golf and a 20 percent discount on merchandise for sale in the golf pro shop. V V

BY WENDY SCHEURING Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary will be hosting a Family Causeway Cleanup on Sept. 5. “We see a lot of patients due to debris, said Chelsea Goff, the assistant director and volunteer coordinator. “We are trying to avoid seeing some of these patients come through our doors.
“Our goal is to make this such a large event that we have enough volunteers to clean up all the causeways in Brevard. — Chelsea Goff
“Our goal is to make this such a large event that we have enough volunteers to clean up all the causeways in Brevard, Goff said. Seabirds, like pelicans; birds of prey, such as ospreys; seagulls, such as laughing gulls; and small mammals, like raccoons, are affected. “The birds use the causeways to land and eat the fish they’ve caught in the lagoon, Goff added. Fishing line, netting and cigarette butts commonly litter the causeways. “The fishing line especially concerns us, Goff said. “A lot of animals are wound up in the fishing line; hooks are embedded in animals. We will see them come in unable to digest, she added.

Is medical mari uana the right prescription for you BY A STIN R S N LL
Marijuana, more accurately known as cannabis, has recently been reevaluated by the medical field as to its possible health benefits. According to Tengwen Long in an archaeobotanical article titled, “Cannabis in Eurasia(...),” a site near Japan contains cannabis seeds, which would accurately date the usage of cannabis roughly 10,000 years in the past. Throughout this time, cannabis has been used in a variety of ways, including for its healing properties. On Aug. 19, One Senior Place in Viera offered the local community a seminar
led by Dr. Frank Filiberto of Marijuana of Brevard. The event was titled “Medical Marijuana to Treat Chronic Everyday Pains.” Filiberto spoke about the possible benefits of cannabis, as well as information to dispel popular myths. "Medical marijuana use for seniors is a very hot topic," said Barbara Fradkin, director of One Senior Place, in a recent press release. "A growing body of scientific research now points to significant benefits of medical marijuana for a number of different health conditions. “(Cannabis) is also one of the safest medicines Dr. Filiberto has ever (recommended),” Fradkin
added during the event. One local doctor who provides medical cannabis guidance is Dr. John Madlener, whose practice is located at 903 Jordan Blass Drive in Suntree. He gave Senior Life insight on how a patient might determine whether they would be a medical marijuana candidate. “If somebody is trying to determine whether they’d be a candidate for medical marijuana, there’s a number of ways,” Madlener explained. “If you’re somewhat internet savvy, you can go to the Florida Department of Health website. On their website, they have a little section that says the ‘Office of Medical

Marijuana Use’, and if you click on that it’ll bring your to a page that has information for patients. “If you’re not internet savvy, I would say to either talk to your primary physician,” Madlener continued. “Or, if you have certain medical conditions like cancer, you would talk to your oncologist; if you have GI problems like Crohn’s disease, talk to your gastroenterologist, (etc.).” “I think the taboo has significantly worn off,” Madlener added. “The majority of my patients that I see at my medical cannabis clinic are of the average age
of 50, 55.” During the seminar, Filiberto outlined a variety of medical uses for cannabis, including for easing the symptoms of chronic pain, for helping patients to tolerate the harmful effects of chemotherapy, and for nausea, pain and vomiting that come with daily, chronic sufferers of various illnesses. “Most frequently dispensed in smokeless form and available for home delivery, medical marijuana is finding favor with Brevard seniors for relief from a number of maladies, including chronic pain,” One Senior Place officials stated. “Ill Floridians have the right to obtain and use medical marijuana (cannabis) with a recommendation by a physician who has determined that the person's health would benefit from marijuana use in the treatment of cancer, epilepsy, AIDS, HIV, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, chronic pain or any other illness for which marijuana provides relief as outlined by

Community Involvement class changes life of Brevard resident Have you ever enrolled in a class that changed the course of your life? Community Involvement did that to me. A few years after receiving my bachelor’s degree, I decided to go back to school. In 2011, I was working toward my Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and Associate of Arts degree at Eastern Florida State College, formerly Brevard Community College. I needed a Social Science class and Community Involvement, described as a course that “provides the student with a unique opportunity

to examine community service and citizenship in many different facets of our diverse community through both practice and critical reflection,” sounded appealing. The course requires a minimum of 32 hours of service to the community and includes 24 hours
of seminars throughout the semester with a faculty instructor. Since I was volunteering at my daughter’s pre-school, reaching the number of hours required to complete the course would not be a problem. Besides giving students the experience of servicing the community in some capacity, the core message of the course was to be the change where we identified change was needed. My instructor was Erin Baird-Jack, a living example of compassion and passion for community service. Baird-Jack is an inspiration
and the message of making a difference wherever we go got engraved in my heart. While taking the class, I took my then 6-year-old daughter Melissa on a landfill tour to answer her questions about what happened to garbage collected by garbage trucks. During that tour, I learned that Brevard’s recycling rate was only 30 percent. My community engagement gene immediately kicked in and I decided to do something about that. “Perhaps if people had access to more information and resources, they would know what to

do and how important it is to recycle,” I thought. My life was about to change and a new journey about to start. I created a blog and a Facebook page and named them Recycle, Brevard! to represent the call to action that it meant to be. And just like that Recycle Brevard was born. Recycle Brevard started as online resources and evolved to be an independent nonprofit organization 100 percent run by volunteers, 100 percent funded by donations and missionrelated services we offer such as recycling for events. After a few years operating from home, in 2017 we opened our facility in Rockledge. From volunteering around the community and sharing useful information online, I became the president of an organization that I wholeheartedly believe in. Once a recognized student for the number of hours put toward community projects, in May 2019 I was back at the Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) recognition ceremony to celebrate other students’ achievements in the area of service-learning. This time, I was representing Recycle Brevard, an EFSC community partner honored for being listed this fall on EFSC’s Link Directory, a directory of volunteer and servicelearning opportunities for

Native Americans also used controlled burns Spinning tales about prescribed burns. Efforts are ongoing to utilize prescribed (controlled) burns to inhibit catastrophic wildfires. Recently, Florida, Georgia and Alabama burned more acreage with prescribed burns than did the fire-prone West. Experts suggest that lightning fires, when not problematic, also should be allowed to burn. Actually, Native Americans modified landscape with periodic burns to create diverse ecosystems, such as prairies, wetlands or woodlands. Wisely, they built firewalls around their settlements. These burns also cleared land for travel and improved hunting by the emergence of certain plants attracting wildlife. Fire allowed berry bushes to flourish. Acornbearing oaks produced
better after burning the forest understory which established openings in the canopy. Furthermore, fire killed disease and insects, activated seeds, attracted native pollinators, allowed the regrowth of trees, shrubs and medicinal plants, and controlled invasive species. Colonists arrived and eventually Native Americans were relocated. Therefore, burns were gradually suppressed. Today, hazards remain, and some wildfires are overwhelming. Accumulated ground fuel, such as
flammable undergowth and fallen debris, are alarming ingredients when combined with heat, drought and wind. Some claim global warming also is causal. Controlled fires apparently revitalize instead of devastate ecosystems. For example, the longleaf pine forest needs yearly fire for biodiversity. Soil maintenance also benefits from fire since soil is sterilized and nutrients are restored. Ash (fertilizer) promotes vegetation possibly within a day. In two weeks, new grass is available for animals. Florida panthers have been observed birthing in recently burned areas. Most wild animals survive prescribed burns. Many outrun the fire. Around 40 species take refuge in gopher tortoise burrows. Amphibians and reptiles
are less mobile. Yet, more creatures would perish in uncontrolled fires. Still, prescribed burns can cause chaos and destroy homes as well as accidental burns. Regrettably, communities are being developed near wilderness, a high-risk area. Hence, homes should consist of ignitionresistant material. Possible threats are yard overgrowth and roof-overhang vents, which draw embers. Although our state is claimed as the lightning capital of the world, the two main causes of wildfires are arson and debris burning. Cigarettes, campfires or dangling trailer chains can add to risks. Sophisticated satellites
help detect 25 percent of active or unreported fires, wild or controlled. In Florida, cloud cover and quick regrowth are intimidating for satellites. However, state managers also document fires. Supposedly, through management, wildfires can be reduced. Florida has never encountered perilous wildfires as in California. After massive destruction to homes and environments, California is finally considering better maintenance. Opposition is ever present, but seemingly, the sensible controlled-burn traditions of Native Americans are worth the experimentation. VV

Straight talk on how the dollars are spent
In 2016, Brevard County voters approved a 10-year, half-cent sales tax to help bring back the health of the Indian River Lagoon. Brevard County’s Save Our Lagoon Project Plan, developed by scientists and the Brevard Natural Resources Management Department, allocates the roughly $40 million annually to projects that remove existing pollutants, prevent new pollutants from entering the waterway or to restore water quality. Most projects are matched by funds from the cities managing them, such as septic system removals, stormwater upgrades and muck removal. To ensure the voters have a voice, a Citizen Oversight Committee (COC) reviews all funding proposals to ensure the money will produce substantive results. The COC makes recommendations to the County Commission, which has final approval. Committee members represent the fields of science, technology, education, finance, real estate and lagoon advocacy.

Lagoon Straight Talk From the Brevard Indian River
The meetings are held at 8:30 a.m. on the third Friday of each month. They are open to the public and televised on Space Coast TV. To learn more about Brevard County’s role, go to brevardfl.gov/ SaveOurLagoon/Home. The Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition (HelpTheLagoon.org) is a leading, independent unifying voice working with community partners to restore the Indian River Lagoon. The coalition focuses on public education and awareness to engage citizens and officials in helping the Lagoon. Public forums, robust online news and information, and reports on Citizen Oversight Committee and County Commission meetings help to educate the public. The Coalition is nonpartisan and not-for-profit.
It is not a part of the government. The average Brevard family contributes only $40 a year to the County’s Save Our Lagoon trust fund, with visitors contributing approximately 40 percent of the dollars raised. Many non-profit groups participate in Lagoon restoration activities, including the Brevard Zoo, Keep Brevard Beautiful and the Marine Resources Council. SUNTREE Neighbors of Suntree will host annual membership coffee drive BY
N Y SC
RING
The Neighbors of Suntree will be back in full swing in September with its annual coffee and membership drive on Sept. 19. Old members and new members alike are welcome to attend the event held at the Suntree Country Club at One Country Club Drive in Melbourne. The event will cost $10 to attend and reservations should be made in advance and received by mail by Sept. 11. “It’s like an introduction for new members,” said June Mikell, the president. “We introduce ourselves. We let everyone know about our four big events, and the charities that we’ll be fundraising for.” The four charities this year are Meals on Wheels, the Brevard Veteran’s Memorial Center, the Animal Sanctuary, and Family Promise of Brevard.
According to Mikell, the Neighbors of Suntree is a way to make new friends, especially if someone is new to the area. “We have 327 members right now,” Mikell said. “That’s how I made friends when I moved to Suntree. We always welcome new members. Last year, we had 93 new members join.” The primarily women’s club conducts fundraisers for its four big events — the welcome coffee and membership drive in September, a holiday luncheon, a February fashion show and a spring event, where charities are given their checks. The group also hosts smaller get togethers as well, such as Bunco, book clubs, bridge, luncheons, and coffee and conversation, usually held at a member’s house. For information, go to Neighbors of Suntree.org or on Facebook/ NeighborsofSuntree. VV

Dispensaries offer CBD and THC products only to those with medical licenses. The widely available CBD does not contain THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Thus, it does not provide the natural synergy of CBD and THC together. For more information about the medical use of cannabis, go to Filiberto’s website at marijuanaofbrevard.com. VV our community.
