It’s the little festival that could. After its first few years as a one-day event, the Nature Festival at Viera Wetlands has leapt a span of three days, Friday, April 12 through Saturday, April 14. Brevard County officials are awakening to the fact that there’s big business in birds, and the Space Coast has them in spades, according to organizers. “We hope to make this a destination festival,” said Terry Mott, event coordinator for the festival weekend. Bringing home Sam By Linda Wiggins

Michelle Bordin of Viera returned from Haiti last month empty handed, but not empty hearted. She met her new son for the first time, but must now set about overcoming the obstacles in hopes of 15-month-old Sam joining her on the airplane for his new home by next Valentine’s Day. This will mean numerous trips to Haiti in the meantime as she and her husband, Stephen, young children, Isabel, Cole and Jack, and other biological family members battle the illogical new twists in the Haitian adoption process to bond with their new member. Knowing the road ahead will now be filled with more obstacles, Bordin’s first meeting with the child she named Sam grew more poignant. “I had been mentally preparing myself for the first time I got to hold my new son, but nothing can quite prepare your heart and soul for the avalanche of emotions

you feel when you see, hold, and kiss your child for the first time, whether it means physically giving birth to them or not.” Bordin is writing a blog and hosting a Facebook page to chronicle her experience, disseminate information and collect donations to help with travel expenses. Her church, fellow home-school families and members of Isabelle’s American Heritage Girls Christian scouting group are pitching in. Most children in Haiti are born into extreme poverty, but it is worse for children like Sam for whom foreign adoption may mean life or death. Christian missions collect money and other resources and recruit volunteers to fly into the country to help, and many faithful members have stepped up to make the children their own. “When I first laid eyes on Sam, he was eating a roll that was as hard as a rock, which he was enjoying thoroughly. I was trembling and crying happy tears. I stood for

Diabetes gets personal for Suntree teacher By Linda Wiggins

Maxine Lauer started teaching at Suntree Elementary School in 1992, the first year it opened. It was a happy time, as she grew to love the school over the years.

But it was also a devastating time, because she learned her 7-year-old son had Type 1 diabetes, or T1D as it is now known two decades later. “We have lived this disease for the past 20 years, hoping for a cure within his lifetime,”

Lauer said of her now 27-year-old son, Bret. “This cause is nearest and dearest to my heart because of him.” Bret Lauer was also among the first students at Suntree, attending the first year when he was in second grade and

Growth keys plans for new church building By George White

The future is so bright for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community Church that the parish is overflowing in the original building and needs to start a fundraising campaign for a new one. “We’re having a lot more families with children joining now and the more Viera grows, the more that will be happening. It‘s exciting to be here in this parish during this time of growth and development. The church is alive with activity,’’ said Rev. Brad Beaupre. Long-range plans have always been to turn the current 30,000 square-foot building into a Parish Life Center. It opened for its first mass on March 31, 2007 with 1,600 families. Even with a new church, the growth has made church leaders consider the possible addition of classrooms or dividing the 750 seat sanctuary space for different purposes. The church was founded with 200 families in 2001 and now has 2,200 families. There are about 450 children in religious education, he said. “We’re running out of classroom space. Every time we have a social event we have to rent space. I think about that expense,’’ he said. The new 40,000-squarefoot church, to be built on land nearby for an estimated $10 million, will be designed to hold 1,400 to 2,000 depending on projected future needs.

VIERA VOICE George White

Rev. Brad Beaupre is excited about the growth of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community Church.

The problem is accurately projecting that growth and the needs of the Orlando Diocese. “If Viera grows more than anticipated, we may have to go with a bigger church but we’re going to have to make the decisions in the next year,’’ he said. The need for planning affected the church earlier as a result of the overall economic downturn. “Viera did not develop as fast as we originally thought it would because of the financial downturn. I thought we would need to start raising money for a new church in three years,’’ he said. The details of the “very vibrant and active’’ fundraising campaign will be coming out in the near future, he said. For more information, call 321-637-9650 or visit the website stjohnviera.org VV

Journey makes angel’s time on earth priceless By Linda Wiggins

When Aran Hissam of Suntree discovered she was pregnant, she hoped it would be the girl she and her husband, Patrick, dreamed of to complete their family of two boys. To her joy, an ultrasound revealed that it was. Further tests divulged something more: nonimmune fetal hydrops, a rare condition that revealed the baby would not survive beyond the womb due to excess fluid surrounding her internal organs. “I can’t tell you how devastating that felt. If it had not been for my husband, other family members and my friends, I don’t know how getting through those days were even possible,” Hissam said. However hard, she tries to put it in words for other mothers and families whose children will see heaven before them, and perhaps not even the light of day. Her book, “My Journey with an Angel: A Story of Hope and Faith in Unimaginable Times,” is chaptered by the weeks of pregnancy, and some weeks after the miraculous live birth of Brianna Marie. “We sometimes have to alter our dreams to fit reality. I never gave up on Brianna and I prayed that she would not pass away in my womb, but at least be born to take her first breath of life and let us get to meet her,” Hissam said. Brianna Marie lived for 15 hours, each moment precious to the Hissam family. A parent who loses a child typically scours the soul to find some meaning and purpose in the life of the lost child. For Aran Hissam, it is to find new ways for fetal therapies to give challenged babies a fighting chance

at life. Her Brianna Marie Foundation was formed to raise and manage monies to support health and medical research for the care and treatment of children, focusing on fetal surgeries. The Hissams will host the foundation’s first fundraiser, an inaugural 5K run at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 16 — which would have been Brianna Marie’s first birthday — at Wickham Park in Melbourne. All proceeds from the book and the race will go directly to the foundation. Hissam hopes surgeons like hers — Dr. Rubén Quintero — will use fetal therapies on conditions as never before. Before Hissam’s procedure, a device — known as an intraluminal tracheal occlusion for congenital diaphragmatic hernia inserted via direct fetal laryngoscopy — had never been used on a baby with fetal hydrops. In traditional fetal surgery, the fetus is

removed partially or totally from the womb and then placed back inside. Quintero developed a noninvasive surgery where tiny surgical instruments are inserted into the womb via a narrow tube, eliminating the risk to mother and baby of such invasive surgery. Quintero was able to insert fetal lung shunts to aid in the removal of fluid around Brianna Marie’s lungs. This allowed her to remain alive in the womb and fulfill the Hissams’ new prayer for a live birth, despite how short the life. Further development of the technique is necessary to allow more babies to live far beyond a number of hours. “Now we’re on a mission to ensure that our tragedy can help others,” Hissam said. To purchase Hissam’s book on Amazon.com, register for the 5K race , or for more information, go to briannamariefoundation.com. VV

Easter sunrise is time of togetherness By Linda Wiggins

The entire community is invited to share an Easter sunrise overlooking the Indian River Lagoon on Sunday, March 31, organized by an area association of churches that help those less fortunate. The event starts with quiet reflection as the sun peaks over the waterfront horizon at Rotary Park in Suntree, followed by a brief nondenominational service, live music and complimentary breakfast. The gathering time will be 6:30 a.m., taking into consideration that Daylight Savings Time moves clocks forward an hour mid-March. “We want everyone in the community to feel comfortable with whatever beliefs they bring to the day. It’s important that we all be able to come together, said Paul Reese, president of the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches and the lay representative of Faith Fellowship, the

“We believe we can accomplish more as a group than we could if we were to act individually and then tally up the results, said Rev. Ron Meyr, pastor of Faith “Viera Lutheran Church, the northernmost SVAAC church. Member churches pitch in an annual amount based on their ability to contribute. The money is pooled to provide assistance to families and individuals who have fallen on hard times. Bags of food and assistance in the form of gift cards to purchase meats are distributed at 6 p.m. Thursdays at the centrally-located SVAAC member Advent Lutheran Church at 7550 N. Strawberry Festival proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity by MARY BROTHERTON

Through the Strawberry Festival, Habitat for Humanity of Brevard has been raising funds to celebrate home ownership for 25 years. Last year’s festival broke attendance records when approximately 40,000 visitors came to enjoy the signature events at Wickham Park pavilion. These events include an open car and bike show, a large arts and crafts show and the annual Berry Patch 5K Run, in addition to a pancake breakfast, food court, kid’s corner and other activities. As with most nonprofit organizations, Habitat for Humanity, especially the Strawberry Festival, relies on volunteers to accomplish its goals. Community-minded individuals and groups work hard, with many returning year after year to help. About 1,000 volunteers start the setup on Thursday and end the cleanup late Monday afternoon. Attendance is free, but through the sale of vendor space and other products, the Strawberry Festival typically raises $100,000 each year. All festival proceeds support Habitat for Humanity’s programs, which are 100 percent in Brevard County. This year, the Strawberry Festival will be a convenient drop-off site for Brevard Sharing Center. Receptacles for non-perishable food items will be in the Brevard Community College parking lot, on the way to the festival.

VIERA FOOTBALL The appeals are in and the final district pairings for the 201314 and 2014-15 seasons have been officially set. The only change of note is that Eau Gallie High will join Viera in Class 7A, District 12. Along with Viera and Eau Gallie, the district will feature Melbourne, Sebastian River and Martin County. Holy Trinity’s district pairings remained unchanged.

HOLY TRINITY CROSS COUNTRY The season may long be over, but the awards keep rolling in for the Tigers. Alex Brown and Julie Wollrath have each been named the Class 1A Runner of the Year by the Florida High School Athletic Association. Also, Holy Trinity head coach Doug Butler was named the 2012 Coach of the Year for Florida by the National Federation of High Schools. It’s the 15th COY honor for Butler, the second time by the National Federation.

HOLY TRINITY BOYS BASKETBALL A rematch with Florida Air Academy awaited the Tigers in the Class 3A regional semifinals. Holy Trinity went on the road to upset District 5 champion Trinity Prep 51-37 in the quarterfinals. Jace Hogan had 21 points, while Will Gibson added 18 ‌ The Tigers reportedly tried to slow the tempo dramatically in their District 5 loss to Florida Air, but still lost 27-19. This time, they were playing for a spot in the regional final.

VIERA BOYS BASKETBALL The Hawks’ season came to an end in the Class 7A quarterfinals with a 66-39 loss to Evans High of Orlando. It was the final game for senior tri-captains Erick DeJesus, Cody Lyn and Zack Schwarz as well as Tristen Cadena and Robert Anthony. DeJesus finished fifth in the county in regular-season scoring with a 17-point average. Viera lost to New Smyrna Beach in the district championship game. HOLY TRINITY GIRLS BASKETBALL It was a building season for the Tigers, who finished 8-12 and lost to Melbourne Central Catholic 48-23 in the Class 3A, District 6 playoffs.

VIERA GIRLS BASKETBALL The Hawks season came to a disappointing end when they lost the Class 7A regional final to Buchholz 84-79 in overtime. Junior Dee Anderson not only led the county in scoring with an average of 19.5 points a game, she was also No. 1 in steals (106) and blocked shots (75). Junior Rolanda Hayes was fourth in scoring (16.8), third in assists (3.7) and fourth in 3-pointers with 33. HOLY TRINITY GIRLS SOCCER The Tigers won the district championship, beating MCC 2-1 in the Class 1A, District 11 title game, then posted a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lake Worth Christian in the regional quarterfinals as eighth grader Sarah Braddock scored the game-winning goal in the second half. That set up a rematch with MCC in the semifinals. Injuries to two goalkeepers left them short-handed and they lost 2-0.

VIERA GIRLS SOCCER Viera lost to rival Melbourne in the Class 4A, District 13 title game 5-3 despite a hat trick from senior Jackie Stengel. That put the Hawks on the road for the regional quarterfinals, where they had hoped to earn another shot at Melbourne. However, Viera lost to South Fork 3-2.

HOLY TRINITY BOYS SOCCER The Tigers outshot St. Edward’s 35-3 in their district playoff matchup, but still lost in double overtime, 1-0. It was the first time in eight seasons Holy Trinity did not advance to the regional playoffs. Junior Evan Enders had 20 goals and nine assists to share the county’s top scoring mark.

VIERA SOFTBALL The Hawks were off to a 6-0 start, including a win at the 2013 prestigious Lake Mary Tournament. Ana Breeden was named the Residential & Commercial 6300 N. Wickham Rd., #124B “Hot List" tournament’s MVP after batting .745. Track teams eye state title run

Have a lot to protect? Concerned about rising costs and reduced coverage? Receiving just average service?

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

With a list of strong athletes up and down the roster, it could be a great season for both Holy Trinity track and field teams. The boys will look to repeat as Class 1A state champions, while the girls have enough talent to challenge for the state title as well. By Carl Kotala

There’s nothing like the aura of two potential state championships to create a fun atmosphere. “It’s exciting,” Holy Trinity senior track and field standout Marques Burgman said. “It makes you want to work harder.” Holy Trinity’s boys team is the defending Class 1A state champion and the girls team, which finished second last season, is in position to challenge for the title this season. “I think we’ve got a good chance to win both of them,” Tigers track coach Doug Butler said. “We’ll be competitive. We’ll be in the top couple anyway. It’s a long way until April 26 (when the state meet takes place). Anything can happen.” With 105 students out for track this season, the Tigers will be loaded in more ways than one. Leading the way for the boys will be experienced long distance runners such as Alex Brown, Tristan Kattenberg and Andrew Cacciatore. They’ll be joined by Burgman and a trio of sprinters who transferred to Holy Trinity — Demetrius Shaw, Alex Bouie and Stephen Ralph. Pole vaulter Corey Smith, who was third in the state last year, is also back. The boys should also do well in the sprints, particularly the 3,200-meter relay which took first at last year’s state meet. This year’s relay will likely feature

Brown, Cole Oliver, Michael Cacciatore and Daniel Welch. On the girls side, Holy Trinity will again be led by twins Daryth and Gaby Gayles. Daryth won the 100 dash last year, while also placing in the 200 and long jump and being part of the winning relay. Gaby was second in the 400, placed in the 200 and was also on the 400 relay. Julie Wollrath will likely double in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Another returner, Alisha Pound, will team with the Gayles twins to form three-quarters of a dangerous

Britten, a transfer from Cocoa Beach High, hopes to qualify for the state meet in the triple and high jumps while also helping the Tigers grab that state title. “My goal is to go to state in triple jump,” Britten said. “That’s my main focus right now, my jumping more than my running. I feel like I could go and win at triple jump. I’ve been practicing and I’ve gotten my jump almost 2 feet farther than what I had last year.” VV

National signing day was a happy time for students at Holy Trinity. Pictured (from left) are golfer Ryan Allison (Colgate); cross country/track runner Mackenzie Dummer (Louisville); soccer player Kaleigh Leeney (Palm Beach Atlantic) and volleyball players Izzy Carmona (Florida State) and Savannah Hicks (FAU). Dummer and Leeney signed on Feb. 6. The other three signed in the fall.

By Carl Kotala

Getting up in front of the entire school at a morning assembly and signing her name on the dotted line was “nerve-wracking” for Holy Trinity senior soccer player Kaleigh Leeney. Meanwhile, Viera High football player Jalen Jackson had to wait all day to officially declare where he plans to spend the next four years of his life. “I haven’t been able to eat lunch,” Jackson said. “It’s been in the back of my head all day. I’ve been thinking about it.” National signing day, which took place Feb. 6, was a big day for five Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and Viera High School students. Leeney signed to play soccer at Palm Beach Atlantic, while classmate Mackenzie Dummer inked her name to a National Letter of Intent to run cross country and track at the University of Louisville. At Viera High, Jackson accepted a scholarship offer from Jacksonville University while soccer players Joy Wilkinson and Eva Banton both signed with the Florida Institute of Technology. Wilkinson and Banton both credited their previous experience playing club ball for Panthers coach Fidgi Haig for helping sway them to join the FIT women’s soccer program. “I just know he’s going to make my experience there so much better,” Banton said. “He’s going to make me a better player,

and a better athlete.” Wilkinson said there were several other things that stood out about Florida Tech, including the fact that a number of her friends will be going there. Getting a chance to play for Haig, of course, is a special bonus. “He’s a really good coach, and a really good person to encourage you,” Wilikinson said. “He’s a great person in general. He has this positive energy. I really like that.” Dummer was seriously considering Louisville and South Carolina. What set Louisville apart were its outstanding facilities, and the fact that coach Ron Mann reminded her of Holy Trinity coach Doug Butler. “They seemed more interested in the athlete as a person and that really appealed to me,” Dummer said. Leeney liked the fact that Palm Beach Atlantic has a good pharmacology program, is Christian-based and is a smaller school. It’s been quite a career for the center-midfielder, who was part of this year’s district championship team. “I’ve been at Holy Trinity since seventh grade, played varsity soccer since eighth grade … and loved every minute of it,” she said. Jackson, who will play running back at JU, was pleased with his decision. “It’s close to home, about two hours away, and my sister goes to UNF, which is about five miles away from JU, so it won’t be a hard transition for me,” he said. “I’ll feel close to home. No stress. It’s just a good place.” VV

For the second year in a row, the Viera High track and field teams will be dominated by youth. “We’re young, boys coach Dave Costello said. “We’re getting great practices. These kids are working hard. We’ll be competitive this year. Viera’s boys team will be led by junior hurdler Will Sattler and junior Greg Nelson, who will compete in sprints and jumps. The Hawks have a couple of young contenders in the 400 meters in junior Paul Cepeda and sophomore Taylor Streeter. Freshman Sam Shaffer will lead the distance runners, while Chris Hernandez will be a multiple threat to rack up points in the pole vault, discus and sprints. Junior Devan Lormand should stand out in the hurdles and high jump, while the Hawks are expecting big things from freshman sprinter Tre Nixon. Streeter, who will also run the 200 this season, is hoping to improve on his starts. If he can do that, he will likely be able to reach his goal of setting new personal bests in both of his running events. He is not concentrating on the district, regional or state meets. “I just want to improve my times, because if I improve my times, that will come, he said.

While the Hawks have 100 athletes out for track, the most ever according to Costello, girls coach Arlene Ferguson reports at least 60 percent of her roster will be underclassmen. “We’ve got a young squad and we’re learning, Ferguson said. Junior Fendi Johnson, who ran the 200 and 400 last season, is learning a whole new set of events. The junior is going to run the hurdles this season. Johnson admitted she was surprised at first when the coaches told her they wanted to make her a hurdler, but “I’m down to do whatever to improve. Other Viera girls to watch this season include senior Kelsey Dolan, who will run the 800 this season; sophomore Gabby Vassallo in the 400 relay and both hurdles and freshman Victoria Wayne, who will compete as a high jumper, hurdler and member of the 400 relay. Just like Johnson’s progression in the hurdles — she’s still getting used to the technique and form adjustments she has to make — the Hawks should get better in time. “We’re all young, so I’m pretty sure we’ll improve within the first three track meets, Johnson said. “Everybody’s time will probably drop 2 seconds. We’ll improve eventually. VV

Completion of the Viera Charter School is on schedule for August and, based on overwhelming demand, it can’t come a minute too soon. The school has chosen a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focus and according to its website, “will offer a comprehensive and rigorous academic program in a safe and nurturing atmosphere.” The 41,000-square-foot structure under construction at 6206 Breslay Dr. has an initial capacity of 650 students from Kindergarten to seventh grade with plans for a second 20,000-squarefoot building within two years that will expand the enrollment capacity to approximately 850 students, Kindergarten to eighth grade. The school has already drawn more than 1,200 applications, prompting a public lottery for the

available spaces. Viera Charter School is a public charter school sponsored by the School Board of Brevard County but governed independent of the Brevard County Public Schools by a board of directors. The board of directors is comprised of Robert Jordan, Jeff Piersall, Kimberly Africano, Rob Naberhouse and Scott Steele. The Board has contracted with Charter School Associates, Inc. to work with the school principal and to provide day-to-day management of the school. “Their progress has been significant being that they just broke ground in December,’’ said Mike Strader, president of Charter School Associates. “It certainly complements the district’s choice plan because it give parents from all over Brevard County a chance to consider the school,’’ he said.

Fathers’ role crucial By Linda Wiggins

The event is billed as a simple Father/Daughter Dance, but the annual extravaganza at Suntree Elementary School is so much more, according to the girls and their fathers who attend, as well as experts. For blossoming young lady Kayla Massa, grade 6, taking part in the unusual event — especially if it is not his cup of tea — sends a strong message from a father. “You get to slow dance with your dad, and it’s embarrassing to him, he does it anyway and it shows he cares,” Kayla said at the Feb. 7 event. Lt. Col. Paul Konyha said that unlike doing things with his son — coaching his team, watching sports, all things male—– spending time with his young daughter, Claire, does not come second-nature to him. “I try really hard to find things she likes doing, and then we do those things together,” said Konyha, who stood holding Claire’s tiny high heels as she twirled across the floor sans shoes. “I make sure to take her out, just her and me, at least once a month.” It’s really important to give a daughter “that ego boost, that love and affection,” according to Konyha. “If they don’t get it from their dad, they’re going to get it from someplace else,” he said. One father took that ego boost so seriously that

he hired a limo driver to bring him the dance. “There’s a first time for everythin driver Ric Blanchard, shaking his he Suntree.”

Melbourne child psychologist Dr. Valerie Allen amplified Konyha’s statement. “A positive relationship with a father is very important to both girls and boys. Most men don’t realize how valuable they are and what a difference their presence and attention makes in the lives of their loved ones,” Allen said. “For girls, if they don’t have this positive connection with their father, or if there is no father in the home, they can go their whole lives searching for this love in the wrong places, repeatedly causing heartache to themselves and ultimately setting up their children for the same future,” she said. “The girl who grows up with positive attention from her father tends to choose a healthy man for a life partner, and have more confidence in life overall.” For Melody Walker, the event is not only for the girls, but also for the dads. “While you are spending quality time with your dad and having fun with your friends, your dad gets to hang out with your friends’ dads,” Melody said, adding that it gives them some added rare guy time as well as time with their girl, “and that makes everybody bond more while everybody has a chance to have fun.” VV

Kaitlyn Sollberger received a perfect attendance award and earned a place on the Honor Roll. By Linda Wiggins

The Viera Voice Student of the Month for March loves music and creativity, but is also so organized that teachers and staff at her Quest Elementary School hope to take a page out of her book. Fourth grader Kaitlyn Sollberger is said to be living proof that an organized right brain can live happily with its more creative left side. “Kaitlyn is every classroom teacher’s dream student,” said her teacher, Laird Parsons, who nominated Kaitlyn for the award with the approval of principal Elia Lea. “Organized, hard-working, personable, friendly and good natured are some of the adjectives that come to mind when I think of her,” Parsons said. Her peers and even adults sit at the feet of the master when it comes to getting centered in order to accomplish the greatest gains in her schoolwork and extracurricular activities. “Don’t wait until the last minute to get things done for school. Get them done early and you’ll have time to spare,” Kaitlyn advised. “When you are organized, you can find things quicker and easier.” Being organized is just the tip of the iceberg that earned

Kaitlyn the nomination, according to Parsons. “Rarely do teachers encounter students who truly love learning as much as she does. She sees the joy in education and jumps at any challenge put forth,” Parsons said. Perhaps one influencing factor is that Kaitlyn’s mother is a teacher, also at Quest. “I’d give you my opinion of Kaitlyn but I promise you I am biased,” Shauna Sollberger said. Fellow students say Kaitlyn is the first to volunteer and the first to invite others to join her. Other comments include, “Kaitlyn is a good friend to all,” “She is respected by her classmates,” and “She is frequently sought after as a group member or partner.” But bookwork is not her only forte. Just as she keeps her nose to the grindstone, Kaitlyn does not forget to let her creative spirit fly. She plays string instruments at school and is in the photography club. “I guess I just find so many things that are interesting,” she said. Manatee Elementary School sixth graders Alec Christian, Spencer Moulds, Mac McHale, Ryan Van Siclen, John Stromenger, Blake Georges, Kate Spencer, Haley Barrera, Chloe Shirley, Tucker Lynn, Caleb Smallwood, Cody Taylor, Steven Klein, Simiran Aulakh, Marie Groppel, Hannah Wu, Skylar Bates, and Nicole Romero rallied their underclassmen to donate to the third-annual Souper Bowl to feed the community’s hungry families. By Linda Wiggins

Manatee Elementary School students are three for three in picking the winners of the Super Bowl. Voting with cans to help Daily Bread feed hot meals to hungry families, the score was 594 cans of soup to 424 cans, hence the campaign name Souper Bowl, with a net of 1,018 cans or packages of soup. As no Florida Teams made it to the Super Bowl, students set aside their team rivalry and focused instead on picks based on prowess. “It is awesome that we have picked the Super Bowl winner

every year,” said sixth grader Cody Taylor, “even though I picked the 49ers and not the Ravens to win.” Factors included defense, quarterbacking and personality. “I chose the Ravens because it is Ray Lewis’ last year,” said fourth grader Hayden Knight. Fourth grader Makai Green said she chose the Ravens because they had the best defense. Tyler Carpenter, of the same grade, chose the 49ers because of their quarterback. Students who contributed to the tally got to celebrate by wearing a crazy hat and their favorite team jersey on the

closing day of the campaign, the Friday before the Feb. 3 Super Bowl. Bookies and bettors may be wearing a path to Manatee students’ door if their roll continues. “We doubt we’d get in on that since this is all for fun,” PTO president Susan Tayor said with a smile. “But one thing is for sure, everyone is a winner because Daily Bread is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the dignity and quality of life for the hungry in our community by providing hot meals seven days a week, and we helped them in their mission.” VV

Author knows her ABZs By Linda Wiggins

Children’s author Marna Novak presented her book, “Do You Know your ABZs,” to kindergarten students at Quest Elementary School Feb. 22. The stars of the page turner are the animals of Brevard Zoo. “In this story, I combined the alphabet, phonetic sounds, rhyme and rhythm along with a familiar local attraction to make it fun for the kids,” Novak said. The mission of the book is to encourage parents to sit and read with their children. “I feel that reading is one of the fundamentals of life and we as parents and teachers need to help children develop

reading skills at a young age to help make the process natural.” The book includes a matching game in the back that with interaction with an adult underscores

comprehension and recall. The author presentation was as much about encouraging writing as it is reading. “I wanted the students to see that they are authors too,” said Quest media center director Lori Kessel, who organized the presentation. “I felt it was important to bring in a local author to show students the process in writing and publishing their work.” Novak is available to speak on her book to schools and other groups. Clear sky provides Night Views By Linda Wiggins

Moon pies, Tang, Starburst candies and mementos donated from Boeing. Sounds like a fun-filled reunion of Apollo-era fans and flyers, but rather it is for potential future space seekers and dwellers. About 100 fourth graders at Ralph Williams Elementary School peered through telescopes, sampled and sipped space-related treats and learned about the solar system and beyond at the seventh annual Night Views event Feb. 20. “It’s corny but the kids love it,” said Wendy Shelden, fourth-grade teacher at Williams and organizer of the event, along with volunteers, Bill and Stevie Voight, retired space worker and teacher, respectively, and Shelden’s husband, Bill, who works at Kennedy Space Center. “All those fun things give us touchstones to talk about

space and also history of the space program. They love it all and have a blast. We all do,” Wendy Shelden said. The purpose of the event is two-fold. “First — and most important, in my view — is to expose students to the amazing wonders in the night sky. I want to get them wondering and asking questions about what’s out there,” Shelden said. The night was clear, so the students were able to see Jupiter’s big red spot, some of its moons, and the Orion Nebula. Even the moon gave up views of craters and ridges the human eye can’t see alone. “The second purpose is related to our curriculum. In fourth grade, we have a science standard that states that students will investigate how technology and tools help to extend the ability of humans to observe very small

things, through microscopes, and very large things, through telescopes. Microscopes are easy in the classroom environment, but the only way to see objects in the sky is outdoors and at night.” Shelden still remembers the first time she saw the rings of Saturn through a telescope 37 years ago. It was fun, so indelibly printed in her memory that it led to a lifelong love of astronomy. “The importance of ‘fun’ in education is hugely underrated. Most people think of fun as horsing around and wasting time, but that’s not what I mean,” Shelden said. “To learn something well, you have to experience it multiple times in a myriad of ways. If it’s not fun, what is going to drive you to continue to search for answers?” VV

Microsoft skills could give Viera students an advantage By Carl Kotala

Before enrolling in the Viera High Academy of Business and Finance, most students had a basic understanding of Microsoft software in that they knew how to print out a paper and maybe how to change the font. This month, they’re about to become certified experts. Again. Sophomores such as Jacque Reed, Stephanie Spratte, Clayton Gindling, Nick Spencer and Hunter Goldberg will take a test this month to become Microsoft certified. For many of them, it will be their third certification in two years. “I think it’s really important,” Spratte said. “It will help us in the future. It’s taught us how to set up resumes … the little details.”

Those little extras can not only help a student put together a research paper that stands out now, but it can also give students a leg up when it comes to getting into colleges, or getting jobs. “I actually have alumni that have come back and said they got a job because they’re certified,” Viera teacher Sandy Spence said. Students begin learning Word, followed by PowerPoint and then Excel. The programs are set up with step-by-step instructions to help ease them through each section of the course. While there is a little friendly competition among students, there is also a sense of camaraderie with those who have already passed a section helping others get caught up to speed. As with anything, the more

you do something, the better you get at it — including taking the tests. “The test itself is challenging, but once you get it, it’s almost like second nature,” Gindling said. Reed, who also takes classes at Brevard Community College, has already seen the impact of learning the software in how she is able to create papers that stand out. Students in Spence’s class are learning more than just computer and business skills. “That’s the thing about the academy,” Spencer said. “You’re really learning life skills. It’s a great way not only to meet people with the same interests within your school, but to help prepare you for the world ahead, no matter what career field that you go into.” VV

Posey names Holy Trinity teacher to advisory panel By George White

Holy Trinity Lower School alum-turned Upper School history teacher Melissa Euziere has been appointed by U.S. congressman Bill Posey to serve on an Education Advisory Council. The council will be comprised of representatives from public, private, charter schools, home schools, students, teachers and principals. Euziere will represent Holy Trinity as a private school along with student representative, senior Christian Teather. “I don’t really know much specifically about what we’ll be discussing because we don’t have our first meeting until April, but he’s wanting to look into education legislation up at the capitol and wanted to make

sure he has a representative’s ideas on the issues facing people in his district,’’ she said. The appointment could have been through one of her former students, who worked on Posey’s campaign or parents who are longtime Posey supporters, she said. Posey spoke to several of Euziere’s classes last fall. “He talked about hard work and what he felt his role as a legislator in Washington, D.C. was and how he viewed the role of the legislature and the role of government. It was fascinating,’’ he said. Euziere believes the variety of representatives on the council will make the resulting advice worthy of consideration in making new laws. “I’m very honored and I’m glad that he is wanting to get a variety of perspectives. I’m one of those people who

VEMA/VELGA Golf Tournament winners

believes that education is beyond the classroom. I think it’s a holistic experience. To understand education, you’ve got to understand all types of education. To make good decisions you’ve to look at all varieties,’’ he said. Euziere brings a long history at Holy Trinity as well as a substantial current class load. “Before they had a high school, I went here from sixth to ninth grade and graduated from Eau Gallie High School in 1996. I teach a lot. I teach AP U.S. history, AP Government, Government honors and

America military history, which is an elective,’’ she said. In the request to join the council, Posey’s staff wrote: “It is important for Congressman Posey to learn about the educational needs and issues you feel are important for our students. The goal of the council is to foster a continued relationship with you and your council on legislation that may assist for education.” The first meeting will be at 3 p.m. on April 4 at the Brevard County Government Complex, Building C, 3rd Floor. She will discuss lottery, grandparent and telemarketer scams and how victims are targeted. “In an era in which webpages can be designed to look absolutely authentic and economic criminals are becoming tech savvy and incredibly good at storytelling in order to steal hardearned money, it is incredibly important to be aware of the signs of fraud and to have the tools to avoid becoming a victim,” Moody said. New doctor in town excited about unique practice opportunities

by Rosemary H. Lynn

Dr. Judson Krosney has joined the Suntree Internal Medicine team located on Jordan Blass Drive in Suntree, headed up by Dr. Abe Hardoon. He is relocating from Fort Lauderdale with his wife, who is expecting their first baby. The first thing you notice about Krosney is his enthusiasm. He is excited about being able to offer new and innovative medical procedures, including the new Zerona laser procedure, which is a painless fat removal system. He also offers weight reduction programs with ongoing support and allergy testing with ongoing allergy shots. The practice intends to be one of the first “one stop shops,” as Krosney calls it. Patients can see their internal medical doctor, have their blood work, sonograms, stress tests, EKG tests all in one facility. In this regard, patients will not have to go to two or three facilities to have these tests done. Another new procedure Krosney talks about is something called P.R.P., or platelet rich plasma, which is an organic healing process utilizing one’s own blood platelets to heal the body. Krosney is passionate about utilizing natural medical procedures as opposed to synthetic medicine to cure the patient. And, if patients are diagnosed with a bacterial infection, they are given antibiotics at the office free of charge.

Dr. Judson Krosney of Suntree Internal Medicine explains how the new Zerona Laser Systerm for fat reduction works

With a team of 44 doctors, nurses, assistants and office personnel, the support at Suntree Internal Medicine  is phenomenal. Patients are promised a wait time of 30 minutes or less when they arrive. Also, hours of operation are dedicated to accommodate most patients’ schedules. They are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. Krosney also offers Botox for men and women, not only for cosmetic use but for medical conditions such as headaches and overactive sweating. Testosterone and steroid treatments are available for men, and steroid and hormone treatments are available for women. Eric Hardoon, operations manager of the practice, explains that the business

is 100 percent private, not involved with any other major health group in the area. He also explained that there is financing available for most aesthetic procedures to make them affordable for everyone. With further expansion on the horizon, there certainly is a doctor in the house for everyone and for every need. The staff enjoys working as a team and will do everything it can to make new patients comfortable and happy with their service. With this in mind, Krosney is pleased to be a part of such a unique, professional group of medical specialists. OPENING SCHEDULED FOR SPRING 2013

Viera Manor invites you to experience the difference! Every aspect of this exceptional community has been specifically designed to meet the needs of seniors and enhance the opportunity to meet people, form new relationships and enjoy a myriad of planned activities.

Viera Manor caters to residents seeking to maintain their independence by providing needed assistance blended with loving encouragement. Residents can select from 10 spacious apartment styles each including an exciting array of “most requested amenities.”

First 30 residents signed are waived from the community fee!

Michelle Brown says her daughter, Jamie, hates the fact that people have diseases. “She has always had a big heart,” Michelle Brown said. “I think it is awesome she has taken the initiative to take care of others first.” Jamie Brown, a 15-year-old student at Merritt Island’s Disciple Christian Academy, intends to raise between $1,000 and $2,000 at the March 16 Walk MS at the Church at Viera. Her schoolmates are supporting her endeavor with candy sales, car washes and walk pledges. Jamie helped raise money for cystic fibrosis when she was in sixth grade and is again raising funds for another student, named Delaney, this year. Her reason for participating in the multiple sclerosis walk; however, is much more personal. Jamie formed Team Adrian to honor her grandfather who suffers with the chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system. Team Adrian is one of almost 100 teams that will be walking to raise awareness and money to help provide services for Brevard residents affected by MS. Michelle Brown said, “My dad started to cry when he knew Jamie was going to walk in his honor.” Multiple Sclerosis disrupts connections and signals between the mind and body, and can cause disability.

Anyone who would like to donate to Team Adrian may email michelle@countywidetitle.com. The MS Walk takes place at the Church at Viera, on Wickham Road, at 8 a.m.. Saturday, March 16. Kevin Kelley, the chairperson for the Brevard Walk said, “We hope to surpass this year’s fundraising goal of $70,000, which is the amount raised at last year’s walk.” Kelley thought he was having heart problems in 1999, but when his speech slurred, doctors suggested he had suffered a stroke. A year later, a neurologist diagnosed Kelley with MS. As his condition progressed, he retired with extreme reluctance. He said, “A bad day for most people is having a hard time

“Not the way we did it up North” describes association living for most people, whether it is a singlefamily homeowner association or a condominium community. Association living may seem quite different to some from our traditional concept of home ownership. Most new owners find the association lifestyle quite advantageous, particularly if they have carefully researched their new community before buying. Residents who find themselves dissatisfied with living in an association typically were not completely informed of the lifestyle before purchasing. Conscientious scrutiny of your prospective association is a key to peaceful living and the absence of surprises. Associations can often be compared to municipalities. Residents own the common areas and amenities of an association in much the same way taxpayers own the parks, streets, etc., in a city. Associations come in a wide variety of sizes and types with many different conveniences and amenities. The governing board of directors is usually elected by the members of the association, just as citizens elect their local, state and federal government. The board of the association has the responsibility to oversee the operation of the community

Association Living

in the same fashion as elected government officials. Just as in municipalities, associations will often hire a manager to oversee the day-to-day operations. The smooth operation of your association will provide you with enhanced property values and the quiet enjoyment of your new home as was anticipated. Excited new association owners often overlook one of the most important aspects of the purchasing decision…, reading the association documents. The documents provide the details of all the benefits of your association and spell out your responsibilities as an owner and neighbor. Be sure that you have read them before you decide to buy and you will have greater contentment after you move into your new home. Your new association may not allow your beloved 65-pound dog. The homeowner association may not allow the 12-foot privacy fence you’ve always dreamed about or you may be surprised to find out that you cannot plant those prized Honeybell orange trees. Learning the answers to questions like these beforehand may preserve the tranquility you are seeking. If you have questions or concerns after reading the documents, it is always a good idea to consult your attorney. Once you’ve chosen that new association, become involved. Whether serving as a board member or on a committee, the success of any association depends on the commitment and cooperation of the residents. VV

Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) Charlie Corbeil

Florida Master Naturalist pbase.com/charlie_corbeil By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

The bufflehead, a sea duck, is one of the smallest diving ducks. The name, a combination of buffalo and head, refers to its bulbous head. Male and female are similar in shades of black, brown and gray except during the breeding season. At this time, the exquisite male flaunts a black and white body, a large white patch across the back of its head and an especially prominent head when it puffs its iridescent green and purple head feathers. Wooded lakes and ponds in Alaska and Canada offer numerous breeding territories—almost exclusively contained in the boreal (coniferous) forest. For nesting, this diminutive creature has evolved to fit the small cavity of the northern flicker (a woodpecker).

Though winter migration is variable, common destinations are protected coastal waters and open inland waters on the east and west coasts of North America. Customarily, the bufflehead flocks with 50 or fewer birds. Arrival at its destination is predictable since it is one of the most punctual migrants in the world. This skilled and dynamic diver feeds primarily underwater. Freshwater habitats provide nourishment, such as insects and insect larvae. In saltwater, crustaceans and mollusks are preferred. To prepare for diving, the bufflehead compresses its

plumage to squeeze out air. Then, it leaps forward and plunges vigorously. When submerged, the wings are held tightly against the body while the feet navigate. It resurfaces bobbing like a cork. A sentry remains above water when foraging is in progress. Though it is habitually monogamous, a solitary male bufflehead is wintering at the Viera Wetlands this year in its spectacular nuptial display. Seemingly, it is courting a female hooded merganser (see photo). It dives, floats, preens or sleeps on the water only inches away from this potential mate and her flock. These two species occasionally hybridize. VV CHRISTIAN OWNED COMPANY

Garrett Lamp is just about to get his annual haircut, and when he does it’s a doozy — total baldness. But then, the badge of solidarity is worth the teasing he gets from his workmates who still have hair. He’s helping children with cancer who go bald without choice, and hoping the rest of the haired universe will join him on Saturday, March 16 in Central Park at The Avenue Viera, at 2261 Town Center Blvd. The goal for the Brevard event of the national St. Baldrick’s Foundation is to raise $200,000. “It’s one of the best charity events, and something so many people want to get behind, that it grows faster than my hair every year, said Lamp, Brevard event organizer. Nationally, the event has grown quickly as well. Three businessmen held a shave day at a St. Patrick’s Day party in Manhattan on March 17, 2000. The goal of shaving 17 heads and raising $17,000 turned into 19 bald heads and $104,000 donated to fund the research of the Children’s Oncology Group. Many of the first two shave event’s participants died in the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, steeling organizers’ resolve to go national. Last year, St. Baldrick’s events hit the $100 million mark. Beyond raising money for research and uninsured treatment costs, the event raises hopes. “This event really lifts the spirits of kids diagnosed with cancer, as well as their siblings, parents and other family members who just don’t know what to do or say to address their loved one’s fears, let alone their own pain, said Dr. Ellen Altenburg, a pediatrician on Spyglass Hill Road in the Osler building. The Suntree resident and her two sons are among the more than 200 participants already signed up to bare their heads. Altenburg is the doctor who diagnosed Ryan Campanaro, one of the children to be honored at the event. For more information, to sponsor an individual shavee or team, or to register for a shave, go to stbaldricks.org, and link to the Viera event. VV
