This year has been a remarkable year for me, personally, because I not only met local celebrities and heroes, but I had the chance to get to know our readers on a deeper level. My first opportunity was when we started our first real model search for our cover and the pages of our 2011 Boomer|Senior Guide, although that wasn’t the first time we have worked with models on our directory. Two years ago, one of our photographers brought his own local models. This year was the first time we held an all-out search for people who had the look we wanted. The really fun part was working with professional models as well as those who had never done this before, like nonagenarian Carmelo Tino and octogenarians Margarette Kirsch, Bill Keeney and ramon Forst. The challenging part was selecting from the many wonderful models and awesome photographs. You won’t see Margarette’s photo in the 2011 Guide, but you will see her in SENIor LIFE. We were one of the sponsors who helped make her Twilight Wish come true. In addition to Bill and ramon, you will see photos of the women in their lives and you’ll also see many other photogenic Brevard residents, of all ages. I am very excited to announce that we are beginning our second annual model search and you can find all the details in next month’s issue. This month, you can read what some of the models had to say about their experience as Boomer|Senior Models. Another opportunity for me to meet our readers and speak with them on a more personal level was when we brought a Sleuths Mystery Dinner Show from orlando to Viera for a sold-out crowd. We had so many who wanted to attend that we had to set up a waiting list. The wait is over! We have not one, but two shows scheduled for october 21 and you can choose from a matinee or an evening production. Please, look for all the details in our ad in this issue. We’ve even tried to make ordering your tickets easier by providing an online form for your convenience. In our consumer society, computers and cell phones seem to become outdated before we’ve taken them out of their boxes. Every day, we throw out 130,000 computers. Every year, we buy more than 100 million cell phones and discard older models with plenty of life remaining. E-waste is still valuable, if not whole, at least in its parts. A circuit board contains lead, copper, gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Recycle it and you’ve got a valuable source of raw materials. “They have an incredible amount of materials that are still usable,” said Erin LeClair, recycling educator with Brevard County Solid Waste Management. “If they can have a second life, that makes it better for everybody.” For Viera, Suntree, Barefoot Bay and other parts of unincorporated Brevard County, as well as for most of the municipalities, Waste Management is in charge of recycling computer electronics. It’s effective, but it takes hours. According to Chris Jones, a technician with Data Doctors in Viera, you can accomplish the same thing with a screwdriver and a hammer. “Physically destroying the drive is the preferred method,” Jones said. Finesse works as well as brute force, although you might enjoy giving your old computer a final comeuppance for uncooperative past behavior. “All you need to do is break the seal and shatter the metal cylinders,” suggested Jones. “It doesn’t take much expertise to take a screwdriver and hammer

to it, but be sure you remember to back up everything before you get started.” Your unwanted cell phone can be a lifesaver. Public libraries accept the cell phones, which are sent to a contractor for clean-up before being delivered to the Sheriff’s Department, which distributes them as emergency phones for victims of domestic abuse. Many schools and groups also collect them as fundraisers. By donating or recycling e-waste, you can do your part to save resources and lessen pollution, so you can feel great when you next succumb to the siren call of the newest piece of electronic goodies. When John Anderson’s fulltime job disappeared in 2005, his alter-ego magician pulled a rabbit out of his hat. What manifested is a business that brings music, magic and a message to children and adults in the community, and a mission that brings God to unchurched children in Romania. After the Laughter: “You’re Left with a Lesson” is the business that gives Anderson the chance to perform in front of a group or stroll through a crowd as a magician, musician or comedian and tap his teacher roots to transfer knowledge to children or adults, sugar-coated in fun. Anderson is as much in demand at senior centers and nursing homes as he is at children’s parties. “Science looks like magic until you understand how it works,” Anderson said. “You can get kids excited about learning by weaving in facts with entertainment, and you can show them the trick and then teach the scientific or mathematical reason it happens.” This magician has no trouble telling his secrets after wowing the crowd. “It’s important that children know that all magic is illusion. Like science, it’s magic until you

know how it works.” This distinction is important because as a missionary and man of God, Anderson makes it plain that he merely works with trickery of the eye. Illusion is not considered evil in the Bible, as would be witchcraft or calling on evil spirits, according to Anderson. Anderson used the tricks to attract the attention of orphans and other needy children in impoverished areas of Romania’s Transylvania during a missionary trip in June. He went with There is Hope missionary founders Tom and Arlene Beal of First Baptist Church of Melbourne. The Melbourne Beach couple has made the trip to the region 28 times since 1991. “Once we attract their attention we can teach them about God and Jesus Christ, grace, forgiveness, salvation,” Anderson said. The group led Vacation Bible Schools in 10 villages, reaching 1,000 children. Their goal is to establish music ministries in several churches to enhance worship independent of the group’s missions. What should I tell my healthcare provider before starting treatment with XIAFLEX? XIAFLEX may not be right for you. Before receiving XIAFLEX, tell your healthcare provider if you: • have had an allergic reaction to a previous XIAFLEX injection.

After an injection of XIAFLEX, your affected hand will be wrapped with a bandage. You should limit moving and using the treated finger after the injection. Do not bend or straighten the fingers of the injected hand until your healthcare provider says it is okay. This will help prevent the medicine from leaking out of the cord. Do not try to straighten the treated finger yourself. Keep the injected hand elevated until bedtime. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have: • signs of infection after your injection, such as fever, chills, increased redness, or swelling • numbness or tingling in the treated finger • trouble bending the injected finger after the swelling goes down Return to your healthcare provider’s office as directed on the day after your injection. During this first follow-up visit, if you still have the cord, your healthcare provider may try to extend the treated finger to “break” the cord and try to straighten your finger. Lighthouse visits For your enjoyment, here are three lighthouse visits that are a short drive from home. The recently opened Cape Canaveral Lighthouse is offering tours through the Patrick Air Force Base Office of Public Affairs. The 45th Space Wing is offering free tours of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station the second Wednesday of each month, from 8:45 a.m. to noon. To get on the list for the free tour, you must call the 45th Space Wing Public Affairs office at 321-4945945. Make your reservations and receive confirmation and directions to the CCAFS, which is just north of SR 401, a few weeks in advance. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is open seven days a week, 363 days a year, closing only on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Open at 10 a.m., admission is $5 for adults, $1.50 for children 11 and under. Call 386 761–1821. From I-95: Take the Port Orange exit off of I-95 (exit 256, old exit 85; which is State Route 421), and travel east on S.R. 421 about four miles to the Dunlawton Bridge. From I-95 take exit 87, to Route 706 east. Take Indiantown Road east about five miles. Turn left/north at U. S. Highway 1 and go about 1 ½ miles north. Turn right/east at Beach Road. Government Park benches and barber shops are popular places to discuss what government is doing to us. “Who’s in charge of the zoo?” or “who elected those (censored comments)” may stimulate discussion. Older folks seem to have more time to evaluate, to discuss and to share their wisdom. Recent changes in government legislation related to Medicare, support for Seniors, Social Security and national health care plans are causing a stir. The complexity of changes over the years has placed government in most every area of our lives. People who live a long life recognize the values of our republic, its democratic form, the freedoms won, and the ability to speak freely. They see government at the federal, state, county and city levels as a tool that needs constant maintenance and repair. They are involved in the governance in their homeowners association, condominium and retirement communities. Whom do you see at town hall meetings, public hearings and other gatherings? Yes, seniors have been identified as the voice of the community. They are participants in watch groups. They write letters. They call their legislators. They are part of the solution and not part of the problem. They speak up! Further, our republic form of government, in order to be successful, requires an informed citizenry – the electorate. Knowing before you vote continues to be more frustrating. Even with the reduced

As advocates, CEO Addison Barry Rand writes, “AARP is working with legislators in Washington toward bipartisan solutions to the country’s economic threats.” Local AARP Chapters provide educational programs about government and community programs. We are the people mentioned in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and in communities throughout our free and independent nation. We are a government of the people and for the people. Growing up in the Bronx, New York, in the ’30s and early ’40s, if you met someone who didn’t sound like they were from New York, it was commonplace to ask, “Where are you from?” That was because a large percentage of people in those times invariably were immigrants from someplace in Europe or first-generation offspring who had their parents’ accents. My brother and I were unusual, being third generation American-born. That changed when I moved to southern California in 1949 where almost everyone was from someplace else. Natives were a rarity and most came from some other states in the USA. Accents were varied and obvious and often sounded so different from ours. It was quite commonplace to assume and ask, “Where did you move from?” meaning what state. Over the years I moved around a lot, resulting in having lived in seven different states starting with New York and including California (southern and more northern), New Jersey, Michigan, Arizona, Massachusetts and finally Florida. Again, I’m in a state where almost everyone comes from someplace else in the country and natives are a rarity. During my years here I often spotted articles referring to various state clubs, groups formed by those having come from other states, to share memories of earlier years with those who have common geographical backgrounds. I never really had an interest in looking into joining

because most that I saw mentioned were states I hadn’t lived in very long. I visited the Lucy NewYork State Kline Club once, but everyone I spoke with wasn’t from “the city.” So, not much in common, it seemed. I only lived in New Jersey for one year, Massachusetts for four years and not Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which has a club. My longest periods of time were for 16 years in New York City, 21 years in California and now I’ve been in Florida for 26 years. Finally, during the past year I saw an article in the newspaper that someone was starting a California State Club. I attended that first meeting and have been returning ever since. The California State Club is now listed in the latest annual issue of Senior Life’s Boomer/Senior Resource Guide. Hopefully many of you will get the new copy and look it over, not just for State Clubs, but for the many different categories of groups that are in our County, some that might appeal to your interests. Since today’s Floridians seem to come from so many different states, with natives a rarity, and they have their own club, wouldn’t it be great if this gives you an idea to join one that exists representing a state where you’ve lived or if none exists, think about getting one started. SpaceCoast boomers A boomer’s passion for life in slivers By angela Smith

Whether he's talking about his love for cruise ships or his intriguing days as a paramedic, the reverence Craig Cusanelli has for life is evident. Before he settled in Rockledge in the early 1990s, he grew up in South Florida, where the sun was always shining, and growth didn’t seem to end. He is old enough to remember the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy in the 1960s, and spent his 20s living the chaotic world of the 1970s. But it wasn’t until Cusanelli was discharged from the Army in 1973, after three years of duty in Okinawa, Japan, that he found the first sliver of his life’s passion—saving lives as a paramedic. “It was dangerous. There were adrenaline rushes every single shift I worked,� Cusanelli said. “Then there was the feeling of joy when you actually helped somebody or saved somebody’s life. There are so many emotions. It’s like a roller coaster when you do a job like that.� After 17 years of saving strangers’ lives, Cusanelli’s instinctive curiosity

about the world and appreciation for the diversity of people became the second sliver of his life’s passion. It led him to follow his lifelong dream of working on a cruise ship, traveling to places he had always imagined. “It was just one of these things I didn’t expect it to be—and to become a cruise director—I just wanted to work on ships as a cruise staff for six months,� Cusanelli said. “I got totally hooked and I started climbing the ship’s ladder, basically...and I stayed for seven years.� Cusanelli now spends a few days as a pier attendant in Port Canaveral, and his other days pursuing his life’s current passion: creating self-historian books for boomers and others — something he realized was key after his father passed away. “When I got married, I tried to explain to my wife about my father and it was just one of those things where I gave her the basics about him,� Cusanelli said. “I didn’t really know the guy. It was sad.� With that, he developed, It’s About Me and It’s About Us, self-historian books that could preserve lifelong memories, like the ones he missed with his father. Sharing a favorite

movie, friends, enemies or most embarrassing moment, according to Cusanelli, are ways to pass on memories that photos cannot. “Pictures don’t tell the whole story,� he said. “I want people to realize that they can fill out this book and have it as a knowl-

Somebody is making millions after developing an App for the iPhone where you slingshot angry birds at evil pigs. The game costs 99 cents and everyone from doctors to elementary school kids are getting hooked on it. The creators of Facebook and Twitter are kids, now millionaires, who didn’t need to get dressed or leave the house. So I’m thinking, what was I doing getting an MBA and donning a busi-

ness suit for 34 years when I could have stayed in my PJs and made more in a year than in my entire career? How hard can programming this stuff be if kids who obviously don’t know how to use zit cream can make millions sitting on their laptops in their own bedrooms? Some of them aren’t old enough to drive, but they can buy the Ferrari with cash. Imagine this, parents are asking their kids if they can borrow the car! So if you really want fame and fortune, forget about shopping for Armani. Head on out to your local department store and get a good set of PJs. Ron Fox told members of his congregation at the Center for Spiritual Living-Space Coast, in Rockledge. “Someone has estimated that we have about 60,000 thoughts a day,� he continued, “and if our thoughts write the story of our life, shouldn’t we monitor them?� Fox and his wife, Becky, are followers of Religious Science, also known as Science of Mind, a spiritual, philosophical and metaphysical religious movement within the New Thought movement, founded in 1927 by Ernest Holmes. Last year, the couple moved to Brevard and started their ministry in January at 835 Executive Lane, Suite 136, in a Rockledge office complex. “This particular church was founded at another location in Brevard by Virgil Gfeller who retired three years ago,� Fox explained. Before becoming a minister, Fox earned his MBA from N.Y.U. and was employed by several large companies. In 1987 he moved from Maine to California to work for a consulting firm. “An employee there mentioned a church in Huntington Beach with a membership of 5,000,� he recalled. “It was a religious science church. I began attending, and in 1990, I started dating Becky and we were talking about what was missing in our lives. We were married and a year later began taking religious classes. In 2001, I was ordained a minister in United Centers for Spiritual Living after actively ministering for two years. Our belief systems are similar to Unity.� Fox’s original writings are featured in the June issue of Science of Mind magazine. “Did complaining about what we don’t have ever get us what we wanted?� said Fox. “Albert Einstein said, ‘Imagination is more powerful than knowledge.’ � Meetings are held at 10 a.m. each Sunday. This column recently addressed the physical preparation of common areas for a hurricane. This month we address internal or administrative preparation. The board or manager should hold a planning meeting with key personnel, volunteers, and vendors such as landscaping, lake maintenance, irrigation, etc. Establish their respective responsibilities before, during and after the emergency. Depending on the size of your association, you may want to consider hiring a disaster recovery company and include them in the planning meeting. Contact your insurance agent to ensure all policies are up to date and appropriate. Once a hurricane warning is issued, insurance policies may not be added or changed. Ask your agent to bring in a loss prevention specialist. The specialist will point out areas of the association that may be at risk, allowing time to perform preventative maintenance. Prepare a computer backup of all important files and contracts that can be kept off site and protected from catastrophe. The backup should also include a roster of all board members, committee chairs, key personnel, vendors, attorney and insurance contact. Include an asset inventory list of all items over $1,000. The inventory will be used for insurance purposes after the emergency. A video tour of the entire association will document the conditions before the storm and will also be used for insurance purposes. The association should also consider a contract with an independent insurance claims adjuster. Insurance company adjusters are working to protect their company, not the association. An independent adjuster will be very helpful after the storm in assessing the damage, cost of repairs, and filing claims. Depending on your type of association, decide what assistance, if any, you may want to provide for elderly or infirm owners. It is not unusual for condominium associations to reserve a block of hotel rooms that are out of harm’s way. Be sure your residents are aware of your planning. Their minds will be at ease, knowing that your proper planning will facilitate getting through the storm and assist in protecting their investment in the association. It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. Ralph and Connie Yorio of Suntree are rare birds. They have nearly all of their six children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grand children nesting within a stone’s throw of them in Brevard. “There are a lot of grandparents out there who don’t have their grandchildren living in Florida, and a lot of grandchildren who never get to have a relationship with their grandparents,� said Connie Yorio. “We know we are blessed.� The pair actually resigned from post-retirement volunteer jobs to focus on attending their grandchildren’s soccer, football, baseball, basketball, karate, cheerleading, competitive dancing and other sports practices and games, many at varsity level. Often they are the only grandparents putting in regular attendance. “I love them, naturally. I am very

happy to be with them all. It’s very enjoyable, Ralph Yorio said. “I hope I give them advice that helps them in the future. We have always tried to set an example that you work hard and do your best. Nothing of value is free.� Life on the Space Coast was not always rosy, according to Connie Yorio. The pair started out as childhood sweethearts, and Ralph joined the navy and later worked as an engineer in New Jersey. Snow “up to our eyeballs� spurred migration south, with the couple coming to the Melbourne area in 1963 for Ralph’s job at a company that later became part of Harris, before moving on to NASA. “We drove with our two babies along 192, a bumpy, empty washboard with snakes and alligators along the sides of the road. I said, ‘Ralph, you have taken me to the ends of the earth.’

It was so desolate,� Connie said. Such is the life of pioneers. The Yorios built one of the first homes in their Indian Harbour Beach neighborhood and proceeded to have four more children, for a total of six, in a nineyear span. “I didn’t have to go to work. Work came to me,� Connie said. She followed the oldest out of the nest to college, and worked 15 years at Florida Institute of Technology, where five of the six went to school. The investment in their family reaps rewards. The flock of 25 comes home to roost at Easter, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. The best part? Downsizing to their Suntree home seven years ago means the get-togethers are at a daughter’s home nearby, leaving the cooking and cleaning to the next generations. SL

Desire to give inspires a senior’s new role

After teaching 41 years, Joan Taddie thought her traveling around the world would begin, but last May, Christy Boyd, a former student of Taddie’s, hooked the 65-year-old thespian in helping her start a non-profit community theatre company. “I said at first, ‘I’m just going to help her with this, open some doors for her,’ and I was pulled in,” Taddie said. They realized the need for community theatre. The curtains rose on what became Places, Please! Theatre Company in December; offering the possibility for youth and professional theatre. “This gives the kids an opportunity to work with professionals, as they are aspiring to be actors,” Boyd said. “Then,

also be a venue for professional actors.” According to Boyd, they are able to offer paid opportunities for people desperately searching for art and theatre jobs. “We go out into the community to find the best designers, the best artists,” Taddie said. “That’s what theatre is, it’s a combination of all arts and it always goes back to the kids. They see potential to their creative talents, they see where it can become a job, and that’s very important.” Although Places, Please! doesn’t have an official home, the motto is “Theatre, by any means necessary.” “Our doors are theoretical,” Boyd said. “We work out of a lot of venues. We’re hoping to be glue in the community.” With that mindset, they were able to get the Henegar Center and Brevard Art Museum to donate their spaces by volunteering in return. “I totally applaud their efforts,” said Robin Kennedy, whose son Ian participated in the first show and an audition workshop. “It will be more about the arts in the community and it’s going to be a really good opportunity for a lot of people.” Places, Please! is producing The Last Five Years at the Henegar Center starting July 22. Titusville-area artist Tabitha Petrasek won the poster-design contest June 26 for the second annual Jazzoo event at the Brevard Zoo, set for Sept. 24. In our consumer society, computers and cell phones seem to become outdated before we’ve taken them out of their boxes. Every day, we throw out 130,000 computers. Every year, we buy more than 100 million cell phones and discard older models with plenty of life remaining. E-waste is still valuable, if not whole, at least in its parts. A circuit board contains lead, copper, gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Recycle it and you’ve got a valuable source of raw materials. “They have an incredible amount of materials that are still usable,” said Erin LeClair, recycling educator with Brevard County Solid Waste Management. “If they can have a second life, that makes it better for everybody.” For Viera, Suntree, Barefoot Bay and other parts of unincorporated Brevard County, as well as for most of the municipalities, Waste Management is in charge of recycling computer electronics. Residents of Melbourne Beach, Melbourne Village, Palm Shores and Cape Canaveral depend on Waste Pro, while the cities of Titusville and Rockledge have their own solid waste management. Waste Management, for example, will

pick up computers, laptops, monitors, keyboards, fax machines, video players, televisions and all the other e-waste at your curb. If you can’t wait to rid yourself of the old electronics, take them to the Household and Hazardous Waste Collection Center at the County Landfill, 2250 Adamson Rd. in Cocoa. Waste Management also offers a Think Green from Home electronics recycling kit that provides postage paid boxes so you can ship out your unwanted electronics, from a computer mouse to a television set. Visit wm.com for details. Don’t forget to wipe your computer drive before saying farewell. The Department of Defense prefers a seven-pass wipe to get rid of sensitive data. It’s effective, but it takes hours. According to Chris Jones, a technician with Data Doctors in Viera, you can accomplish the same thing with a screwdriver and a hammer. “Physically destroying the drive is the preferred method,” Jones said. Finesse works as well as brute force, although you might enjoy giving your old computer a final comeuppance for uncooperative past behavior. “All you need to do is break the seal and shatter the metal cylinders,” suggested Jones. “It doesn’t take much expertise to take a screwdriver and hammer

to it, but be sure you remember to back up everything before you get started.” Your unwanted cell phone can be a lifesaver. Public libraries accept the cell phones, which are sent to a contractor for clean-up before being delivered to the Sheriff’s Department, which distributes them as emergency phones for victims of domestic abuse. Many schools and groups also collect them as fundraisers. By donating or recycling e-waste, you can do your part to save resources and lessen pollution, so you can feel great when you next succumb to the siren call of the newest piece of electronic goodies. The cosmetic techniques suggest ways to help diminish the flaws by concealing, coloring and highlighting. The author’s goal is to help women apply makeup beautifully and express themselves creatively. She suggests more than 40 colorful, creative looks for women 40 and over.
