Viera Hospital Volunteers -
THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY By Ken Previti
Brevard County Fire Rescue begins operations from Station 48 Special to VIERA VOICE
As the month of March opened on everyone’s calendars, the Brevard County Fire Rescue began operations from Station 48 in Viera. Fire Station 48 is an 8,700-square-foot facility located at 5550 Porada Drive, just off Stadium Parkway. The building will house the county fire department’s Special Operations team and is home to the department’s newest ladder truck. The county operates a second station on Murrell Road, approximately five miles away from east of I- 95. A grand opening event is being planned for later in the month. For more information, contact Assistant Chief Brad Hall at 321-633-2056.

Health First Director of Patient Relations and Volunteer Services, Marcia Phillips, (left) and Viera Hospital Manager of Patient Relations and Volunteer Services, Debbie Helton discuss the need for more volunteers on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, prior to the hospital’s grand opening.
The Viera Hospital opens April 2, 2011. A planned adjacent medical professional center will bring additional convenience to Viera and Suntree residents.

Health First’s Viera Hospital opens April 2 and is looking for more volunteers. “Viera Hospital has had a wonderful initial response,” said Debbie Helton, Viera Hospital manager of patient relations and volunteer services. “We presently have about 300 volunteers, but we are actively looking for more as the need for volunteers grows as the hospital establishes itself. We welcome the opportunity to partner with local residents to become volunteers throughout the Health First services . . . especially Viera Hospital. “We are interested in people who are committed to service, and there is a full range of opportunities for them,” said Marcia Phillips, Health First director of patient relations and volunteer services. “Health First puts patients ahead of profits,” said Elliot Cohen, Health First director of media relations. “We are now the only notfor-profit health care system serving central and southern Brevard County. We are now also the only locally-headquartered multihospital system in the entire area. That means we focus 100% of our efforts, our passion, and our commitment on residents here. All our volunteers share the same vision and values, and we are proud of their dedication,” Viera Hospital wants volunteers to work at the information desk, admissions, the gift shop, provide clinical transport and the courtesy transportation cart, comfort providers in the emergency department, deliver flowers, as greeters at the information desk and waiting rooms, the mail-room and a host of other areas. Volunteers are often retired, and large numbers are students 18 and older from BCC, especially from the nursing programs that require service hours, as part of a course requirement. Even though it doesn’t look like it could do damage or help in a crisis situation, the robot has proven its toughness. It can drag its long, heavy cord behind it without trouble or even drag an officer across the ground with inhuman ease.
While the robot was specifically designed for the police department, any department can make use of it. Support for cutting taxes, especially corporate taxes, versus continuing public services, particularly education, continued during a rally in Viera on March 8. The Awake the State rally brought 300 supporters while 50 Tea Party and Governor Scott supporters counter-rallied. “Thugs,” “Bums!” and “Get back to work!” were terms shouted and signs held by Tea Partiers as they peacefully counter-rallied. “Back to work? How? I’m losing my job,” “We are the middle class” and “Stop the attack on Florida teachers” were on signs held by teachers, ireighters and supporters of funding for public services. With Governor Rick Scott’s stated goal of eventually elim-
inating corporate taxes in Florida, the employees who will lose their jobs and representatives of organizations that support public services rallied their objection. The issue will be key to Viera, home of the Brevard County Government Center, school district headquarters, Moore Justice Center, Veterans Administration, Health Department and scores of other county-centered services from all levels of government, as well as home of a growing number of nonproit social service agencies that serve county-wide. The $106 million in tax breaks given to corporations and political supporters by Gov. Scott, who sees these moves as nurturing business, was compared during speeches at the rally to
the $107 million in cuts to education and other public services. In Governor Scott’s State of the State Address that evening he said, “Government always takes more than it gives back. Some thought that businesses could tolerate a strangling web of regulations.” Tea Party member Consuelo Schanderbeck of Satellite Beach said that her reason for counter-rallying is, “We should not give free food, money and schooling to illegals.” Jane Sheahan of Melbourne said, “I met Rick Scott two or three times. He is not taking any wages. I’m from a military family and 40 years ago they took beneits from us. I don’t want to hear teachers boo-hoo. I have no sympathy. Obama is going to take all the money out of Social Security.” David Ginsburg, who has represented the ireighters of Palm Bay for 20 years said, “Do not balance the budget on the backs of public employees. Do not attack our collective bargaining rights.” Terry Sanders of Indialantic and a member of Brevard NOW said, “Legislatures and Rick Scott must stay out of women’s issues and spend their time creating jobs including public service jobs.” Deb Peterson of Melbourne and membership chair for Retiree Council 43 of the national New York State United Teachers union said, “We support a worker’s right to due process. We understand that a child’s education is a joint venture and responsibility of the student, parent, community, teacher and administration. You cannot judge a child’s progress solely on a standardized test score.”

Captain Eric Ciocher fishing forecast for April 2011 VIERA VOICE introduces Capt. Eric Ciocher as a regular feature. Each month, he will tell you what ish are biting and what bait to use. Learn what works inshore, offshore, in fresh water and in the surf. Capt. Eric owns and operates Space Coast Fishing, a ishing charter service in Brevard County. He is the host of “Ultimate Catch”, which airs on Sportsman channel 118 on Brighthouse, channel 605 on DirectTV and channel 395 on DishTV. If you would like to book a guided ishing trip with Capt. Eric, contact him at 321-253-6463 or spacecoastishing.com. Inshore. The Banana and Indian River lagoons will continue to be active for redish, sea trout and snook should start showing up any time now. The best place to target these ish are in the lats or near the spoil islands using cut mullet or live shrimp. Offshore In the Atlantic ocean along the Brevard coast as the water temperatures begin to rise into April, look for 70 degrees to target cobia and triple tail as they start to migrate from the offshore reefs and wrecks into about 40 to 50 foot of water. One technique to catching these ish is to sight ish them on the surface with jigs tipped with squid or a shrimp.
VIERA VOICE Photo
Captain Eric Ciocher loves fishing as much as he loves sharing his knowledge of fishing.
Fresh Water. The waters levels are still extremely low in the St. Johns River. The black crappie (a.k.a. speck) bite is good. If you can get to the ish given the shallow conditions, use small grub jigs to hook these tasty little catches. Also look for blue and channel catish in the deeper areas on the St. Johns River. Surf. In April anglers should still see good catches of whiting, pompano, and Spanish mackerel along Brevard County beaches. The top baits to use in the surf are sand leas, shrimp and cut clams.
Florida Regulations. For Florida State ishing license information visit the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website www.myfwc.com or call 850-488-3641 Be safe out on the water. Capt. Eric

Couple makes AVET Project their mission to help veterans By Linda WIGGINS
Kim and Garren Cone looked at each other one day several years ago, overwhelmed by news from fellow veterans about the seemingly insurmountable needs and challenges facing returning combat veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. They decided to do something about it. “I wanted to shout to the world that these men and women are risking life and limb for us and in many cases losing them, and we need to reach out and help
them for their sacrifice,” said Garren. The Cones founded AVET Project, a non-profit organization incorporated here in Florida with charity registrations in Oregon and California as well. Its mission is to “lessen the load and brighten the futures of these brave men and women who serve and sacrifice for our country.” Garren is president and Kim is executive director. Garren hosts the American Warrior Radio Show at 9 a.m. Saturdays on WMEL 1300AM radio as one of many outreach endeavors operated

Among its many functions, AVET Project sends care packages to forward-deployed soldiers; grants wishes to terminally ill veterans; sponsors monthly dinners on military bases for families of deployed military members; performs elder care outreach and host seminars counseling veterans on benefits due them, to name just a few. This all-volunteer organization continually seeks ways to identify the needs of this population and meet them. “The reality is our past and present warriors often contend with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI),
deep depression, heightened risks of divorce and suicide, and limited employment opportunities in a challenging economy,” Garren said. Brevard County is home to nearly 75,000 veterans and active duty military. Many of them live in the Viera/ Suntree area, making this a focal point for veterans due to numerous private and public services available here. AVET’s secret weapon is actually winning the war on veteran divorce and suicide: Project Recuperation and Reintegration Retreats. “Coming back from deployment, the veteran feels totally alone. VIERA SOFTBALL DUO MAKES SCHOOL HISTORY BY CARL KOTALA
Becoming the irst two players from the Viera High softball program to accept a college scholarship has brought much more than a sense of accomplishment for seniors Alex Breeden and Kaci Vassallo. There’s also a sense of liberation. Breeden, a senior catcher, has committed to South Alabama while Vassallo, a center ielder, will be going to Lynn University. “It’s such a relief to know where you’re going,” Vassallo said. “When I got VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala offered from Lynn, it was March 16, 2011, Viera Regional probably the best day of Park -- Viera High center fielder my life, just knowing I don’t Kaci Vassallo and catcher Alex have to worry about where Breeden (seated) have become I want to go anymore. his players has always been a big goal for Hawks coach Dale Pierce, who has turned the Viera program into one of the best in the county. Now he’s hoping the fact that two players have punched their college tickets will only inspire future players to work toward that goal. “That’s the best that can happen.“ Pierce said. “The other people see that happening and they’ll know that anyone can get it as long as they work hard. It’s huge for the school and everyone else.” Both players said they were looking at several schools, but it there was a special feeling surrounding the South Alabama and Lynn University programs that helped sell them. “For me, South Alabama had just such a family atmosphere,” Breeden said. “… I wanted someplace where I knew the coaches weren’t just in it to see, ‘Oh as long as she does good on the ield, that’s all we care about.’ “I wanted somebody who actually cared about me as a person, and how I end up as a person. I trust those people completely and I know my parents do.” Asked about what makes
the two players stand out, Pierce pointed to one thing. “Work ethic is the main thing for both of them,” the Hawks’ coach said. “Kaci was out here working with us when she was in eighth grade. And Alex, her work ethic … we knew when we were watching her play Little League that she was going to be a real good catcher for us. I think she’s been the best catcher in the league for the last two years.” Vassallo was hitting .485 with eight RBIs, two doubles and one home run through the irst 16 games for Viera. Breeden was hitting .345 with 19 RBIs, 14 runs scored and ive doubles. The Hawks, who were off to an 11-5 start, have had to deal with the loss of last year’s Florida Today Player of the Year, pitcher Kinsey Simmons, to an elbow injury. That has taken an adjustment, obviously, but both players believe the Hawks can still make a run. “I think we’re playing good,” Vassallo said. “We’re not exactly where we need to be. There’s room for improvement and as long as we improve as we keep playing, I think we’ll be ine.”

SUMMER EXPERIENCE PAYING OFF FOR VIERA CATCHER BY CARL KOTALA
Cody Adams has been a different kind of baseball player for Viera High School this spring, and it all stems from what he did last summer. Taking advantage of his coaching staff’s connection with the Washington Nationals − assistant coach Kenny Berger is the assistant grounds crew director at Space Coast Stadium − the Hawks’ senior catcher had the chance to work out with some of the Nationals players. Adams caught bullpen sessions for pitchers who were rehabilitating from injuries − guys like Jason Marquis, Chien-Ming Wang and Scott Olsen. He had his own locker, right next to Marquis, and got to spend time talking with the 15-
year veteran, as well as pitcher Garrett Mock and catcher Jesus Flores. When he wasn’t doing that, he got to practice with the club’s Gulf Coast League rookie team. “That was huge,” Adams said. “I got to hit in the cages with all those guys. I think that was something that really shaped how I think about baseball now.” Viera coach Jason Burchield igured the workouts would help Adams, who converted from inielder to catcher his junior year. Adams become a better receiver behind the plate. However, there have been other noticeable beneits this season as well. “The thing I’m impressed with is his overall approach to the game,” Burchield said. “It’s so much more mature. He’s got a purpose. He was
kind of loating around out there (before). But I think he got out there and he (realized), ‘Whoa, this is what it’s about.’ It tuned on some lights for him. It opened his eyes.” That’s for sure. Not only did Adams get to talk to a number of professional players, he also got to watch them go about their daily business and see how the game is meant to be played. “It just let me see the different styles of baseball,” Adams said. “I got to really think about how I’ve been playing here at the high school, and how other people play … how I can adjust to make myself better. “I got to learn from a lot of those guys. I just listened. They were great. Those were the best of the best out there.” With a slightly altered
CARTMELL BRINGS HOME STATE WRESTLING TITLE BY CARL KOTALA
Ty Cartmell’s high school wrestling career may not have gotten off to a great start, but oh, what a finish. The Viera High senior became the first wrestler in school history to win a state championship when he defeated Ridgeview’s Josh Fox by a 13-4 majority decision in the Class 2A, 189-pound finals at the Lakeland Civic Center on Feb. 19. “It’s really an indescribable feeling,” Cartmell said. “It feels like all the hard work I put in the last four years finally paid off.” With a career record of 134-15, Cartmell has set the standard for future Viera High wrestlers to follow. That’s why he can laugh about how it all got started. Disqualified for an illegal move in his first match as
a freshman, Cartmell went on to have a 7-9 record. In his own words, he got his “butt whooped.” At the same time, he fell in love with the sport. He started training year round, working out at the Circle of Champions Wrestling Club in Palm Bay when he wasn’t training with Viera High coach Jim Gentile. As a sophomore, Cartmell went 34-3, qualifying for the 1A state tournament as a 171-pounder. He moved up to 189 as a junior and went 47-2, winning the Cape Coast Conference, District and Regional titles before finishing fourth in 2A at state that year. After tweaking his technique and improving his cardio for his senior year, he repeated as CCC, District and Regional champ and went to the state tournament prepared more than
ever to win it all. “When you get to state, it’s just a mental game,” Cartmell said. “You can’t do anything more physically to get in shape by the time you get to that point. Some people crack under the pressure. It depends on who shows up. They’re all good there.” By finishing his senior year 46-1 − with a state championship medal to boot − Cartmell accomplished another goal he had set for himself. “I knew we were a new school … my goal was to make a legacy,” he said. “I think I’ve done the best I could with doing that.” Gentile described Cartmell as a kid who thrived on competition and was determined to get better. “He made my job really easy,” Gentile said. “He was
swing/batting stance, inspired by working out with Flores, Adams was hitting .563 (18 for 32) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and ive RBIs for the Hawks through 11 games. He’s also much more comfortable working behind the plate, understanding what each pitcher likes to throw as well as the best way to try to motivate them. Adams has drawn interest from several schools, including Polk Community College. However, if he can continue to play well, it’s very possible he could be hearing from more by the end of the season. “A lot of the kids on the team have really stepped up,” Adams said. “We’re all doing great. We‘ve just got to keep rolling.” The Hawks were off to a 74 start and playing well.

goals … Austin Wear had a career game with 11 ground balls, a goal and an assist … Matt Bank’s defense shut down Jensen Beach’s top offensive player … Kevin Peer was outstanding in goal with 14 saves … Chris Jones and Zack Zippi also scored.
SOFTBALL
Losing last year’s Florida Today Player of the Year − star senior pitcher Kinsey Simmons − to an elbow injury was certainly a big blow, but Hawks coach Dale Pierce said sophomore Ana Breeden and freshman Kate Callinan have really stepped up for Viera … Breeden was 4-1 with a 3.40 ERA and 32 strikeouts … Shay Richardson was hitting .448 with two doubles, two triples and seven RBIs … Lindsey Bishop was hitting .413 with 11 RBIs and five doubles.

YOUR
Question of the month
What do you think about Gov. Scott’s plan to stop the database that tracks the fraudulent distribution of addictive prescription drugs, without consulting lawmakers, because he considers the monitoring system an invasion of privacy? Would you like to participate in our “Your Voice” column? Each month we pose a new question and print a photo with your answer. We’d love to include YOU. Call us at 321-242-1235. Not sure about the current law, but he should, at a minimum, consult the legislature for advice on this matter.
Arthur Foster
Spring Stiles
He should consult his advisors in the legislature that are a part of his political team. He and the politicians should either amend the current law or make a new one.
I think that Governor Scott is following his own agenda. He does not appear to be a team player. He needs to consult legislature on more items such as this.

Chuck Jacobs
Dina Mercaldo I would disagree with the Governor’s halt of the database-once it becomes fraud, it would lose its right to privacy. As citizens, we, or our legislature representatives, should have that right, not one individual.
Ken Segal
I feel that Governor Scott could be interfering with the health and well-being of uninformed citizens. It appears that he may have his own agenda other than looking out for our best interests.
Governor Scott needs to remember that he is not the entrepreneur of a private company anymore, even though he has a medical background. He should consult the legislature instead of acting alone.

Manatee teacher visits Washington’s tomb
News
By Mary Brotherton
VIERA VOICE Photo
Connie McLellan places a wreath at the tomb of our nation’s first president February 2011.
President’s Day will always hold special meaning to kindergarten teacher Connie McLellan. In February, she served as an official wreath bearer during a ceremony at George Washington’s tomb in Mount Vernon, Vir. “This was an awesome experience and it allows me to appreciate President’s Day as well as George Washington’s birthday in a new light,” she said. “With this experience, I feel that I can bring to my kindergarten classroom a little bit more knowledge of this special occasion.” Ms. McLellan teaches at Manatee Elementary School.

Quest Elementary’s As Good as Gold… berg team, consisting of L-R: Julie A, Molly W., Deegan T., Chase T., Casey W., designed and built a Rube Goldberg machine that performs a simple task in a complex manner using a chain reaction as their project for the local Odyssey of the Mind competition. The team’s machine roasts marshmallows over a campfire, and appears to use pollution as its alternative energy source, incorporating all six simple machines (screw, lever, wedge, pulley, wheel & axle, and inclined plane) to make the series of chain reactions more complex. This team of 3rd and 4th graders came in 2nd overall for their division, and will be going to compete at the State level at UCF next month. Winners at the State Finals move on to the World Finals at the University of Maryland in May.
VIERA VOICE Photo
Mrs. Leaman’s 6th grade class raised 1,013 “Pennies for Pasta” helping Quest Elementary come in first place for donations in Brevard County, Fla. and 4th place out of all 331 participating schools in the state. Quest raised $5,335.63 of the $414,000+ raised this year. Pasta for Pennies is a program sponsored by Olive Garden to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Each year, schools choose a three-week period to fill collection jars with spare change. The class collecting the most money at each school is awarded a pasta party delivered to the classroom by its local Olive Garden restaurant.

The team put on a skit where Peter Pan is a tour guide who takes adventurers on a whirlwind trip from the Statue of Liberty where a puppet comes alive during the performance, to Niagara Falls and finally to The Great Wall of Popcorn. This team of 2nd and 3rd graders placed 11th out of 17 competing against 3rd-5th graders in their division debut. However, the young team placed 5th in the spontaneous portion of its score.

Our family motto: Work hard to earn your position. Work harder to keep your position.
Volunteer of the Year – but she was probably the only one who was surprised. As soon as she threw the ceremonial irst ball to her son, she returned to the concession stand where some remarked how proud they were to have the volunteer of the year serving their hot dogs and drinks. V.V. What is your fondest memory from your childhood? R.Y. Sitting in the backyard in Alexandria, Virginia with my mother, looking out at the stars.
Since 1998, Rose Yanick has volunteered in some capacity with the Viera/Suntree Little League – no surprise since her three sons all play or umpire for Little League. She is an unoficial umpire helper. They all work concessions and her sons mentor other players through the challenger program. The registered nurse says she and her husband are teaching their sons to give back. As Concession Coordinator, she works with the team mom to set up schedules and she makes every purchase for the concessions. She was recently surprised when she was named the 2011 Viera/Suntree Little League

Tech Know Expo finds a way to help Japan BY MARY BROTHERTON
After more than a year of planning, Tech Know Expo came to Viera High School on March 29, in the shadow of Japan’s tragic earthquake and tsunami. With a desire to reach out, the expo organizers decided to ask for donations for high-tech water puriiers to send to Japan in the wake of the recent deadly earthquake and tsunami. Air Mobile Ministries, a 501 (c) 3 non-proit organization, provides disaster relief throughout the world. Since its inception in 1978, Joe Hurston and his team of volunteers have brought medical supplies, food, clothing and the Air Mobile Rescuer water puriier to those most in need. Hurston was the irst to arrive in Haiti after its devastation and he was among the irst from the U.S. to ly into Japan last month. Hurston wrote on his daily updated blog, “Tsunamis do not discriminate between 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th World countries. They simply destroy them all with the same ierce, relentless, exacting ferocity that is almost unimaginable!” Admission to the event was free and all workshops were provided at no cost to expo guests. Within the last days before the expo, the decision was made to have donation receptacles available to expo attendees. A 50/50 drawing also generated funds for the charity. The 2011 Tech Know Expo was the irst-annual event in Brevard County to provide free demonstrations, classes and workshops on social media such as Twitter, Skype and Facebook as well

as glimpses into phishing, Snopes, blogs and online banking. With presenters from NASA, robots and other high-tech displays, registration illed quickly, but walkins were welcomed throughout the day. Geared toward boomers and seniors, the event was open to people of all ages and skill levels. A fun and interactive MAC vs. PC panel entertained as well as informed. Outdoors, the Brevard Sheriff’s ofice gave a live demonstration of Project Lifesaver and Brevard Workforce brought its mobile job search van. Kelly Ford provided a look into some of today’s most technologically advanced cars and the newest ire-rescue vehicles were in the parking lot for viewing. Uno Chicago Grill used the event at a Dough Raiser to contribute a percentage of the days’ food purchases to Air Mobile Ministries while providing tasty meals for attendees. Students on spring break and community leaders earned service hours as volunteers at the event. Vendors who were too late to participate in this year’s expo have already requested to take part in the 2012 event. Wildside Tours let visitors get a close look at the Thousand Islands
VIERA VOICE George White
Capt. Ben Evans, owner of Wildside Tours, disembarks from Ramp Road Park in Cocoa Beach on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, to give a two-and-a-half hour tour of the canals of the Thousand Islands Nature Preserve. By George White
The Thousand Islands Nature Preserve area of the Banana River in Cocoa Beach offers a wide variety of wildlife in a series of canals around small delta islands formed thousands of years ago when a hurricane cut through the barrier islands.
Sandals and Beaches Caribbean Night
Wildside Tours provides one of the best ways to explore the mangrove ecosystem while learning about the wildlife from owner and Capt. Ben Evans and fellow Capt. Jeanette Vasbinder. “I bought the business about four years ago and I’ve tried to make it more unique and more nature-oriented than other tours. It‘s all a matter of knowing what (the wildlife) are and when to see them,’’ Evans said. One distinct advantage of Wildside is the smaller size of the vessel − about 27 feet − that allows up to 20 visitors a chance to go into smaller canals that larger tour boats can’t navigate, he said. “It’s a catamaran so it’s one of the most stable boats there is. The boat is really safe and the average depth of the water in the area is
only about three feet, so there’s really no need of being afraid of the water,’’ he said. The business is going well and attracts a variety of patrons, many of whom are repeat customers, he said. “Our clients range from experienced birders to people who have never been on a boat, and we couldn’t be in business without returning customers and we like that. We don’t have a set route for the 2 ½-hour tour. Now we’re doing more and more specialty trips for birding, shuttle launches and we do something I call a mobile marine science tour,’’ Evans said. Added Vasbinder, “It’s like being on a field trip every day. It’s really not like work.” Wildside Tours go out twice a day, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. departing from Ramp

PROMINENT
Kyle Smith When Kyle Smith was in Little League he had his eye on more than the ball. An above-and-beyond attitude bode him well in the sport and eventually landed him the job as general manager of the Brevard County Manatees. He rubs elbows each day with future and current greats at Space Coast Stadium, spring training home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team.
What made you choose your profession? I always had an interest in how the sports business worked. When I was in Little League I kept thinking of ways to make the games more enjoyable for the people watching. At the time, I didn’t really think about them as parents and other relatives; I thought of them as fans. So we’d hand a younger kid the game ball after the game, or have the whole team sing songs in between innings to try to provide some type of entertainment for those watching. For the record, we sounded terrible any time we sang. What do you like about your profession the most? As corny as it sounds, the best part is getting a compliment from fans as they leave the stadium. It goes a long way when someone says “Thank you” for the hard work everyone has done to put on our show. What would be your dream job? I would like to eventually create an ownership group to acquire two to three teams that are not maximizing their potential and make them not only proitable, but a community leader, where ever that may be. What would you recommend to young people considering your path? So many young adults coming out of college think the path to success in the sports business is easy. Those are the ones who aren’t currently working in the sports business. You have to pay your dues. You may have to pick up garbage, stuff programs and clean bathrooms, but people notice. The ones who stand out are those who feel nothing is beneath them. What do you really sell? We are an entertainment business. We appeal to people who like to have fun. Simple as that. Baseball games are social events. People come to forget about life for a while and enjoy the

outdoors, the sights, the smells and quality time with their friends and family. What is your recipe for success? I can be a very determined person. It’s not always a quality. I work hard for what I think should be attained and once that level is reached, I want to surpass it. Needless to say, I was a heavily penalized hockey player as a kid. How important is education in your business? Education is important in the sports business only if what a person’s learned they apply to their job. Continued on pg 6B

Parting Shot by Charlie Corbeil
American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrohynchos)
The American white pelican occasionally winters in the Click Ponds located in close proximity to the Viera Wetlands. It is a large white aquatic bird with distinctive black wingtips and a nine-foot wingspan. Unlike the brown pelican, it does not drop from great heights to catch its prey. Instead, it floats within a cooperative pod of feeders strategically swimming in line. Thus, the fish are herded towards the shore. Then, the pelican scoops the fish with his huge, long, flattened bill. The bright yelloworange pouch below the bill holds three gallons of food and water. The bill is pointed down to drain the water before swallowing. Breeding occurs in the mid-western states and central Canada. The pelican winters in states on the southern coastlines of the United States. Fresh water, as in the Click Ponds, is preferred.

Association Living By FRANK KNEISER
Neighbor complaints probably generate the greatest number of phone calls from association residents to a property manager. “My neighbor won’t pick up the dog doo.” “My neighbor parks his pick, up truck outside.” “The neighbor kids blast the stereo at two in the morning.” “The neighbor’s grass is two feet tall.” “They leave garbage cans out all day.” “Who allowed my neighbor’s 65-pound Rottweiler?” In most associations, these complaints fall
do the entire process in writing. Once the violation is confirmed, a friendly letter is sent to the offend-
under the category of deed restriction enforcement. Association documents usually spell out in detail how these types of situations are handled. Definite, clear and concise consequences should be mentioned, such as “the Board may be forced to take legal action” or “the Association documents allow a fine be imposed.” If these efforts fail, your association fining procedure should be implemented according to Florida law. If your association has no fining procedure, the matter should be referred to the association attorney. Deed restrictions are often the primary reason an owner chooses the association style of living.
Enforcement of your deed restrictions is critical to your property values. It must be done in a fair and consistent manner. Association deed restrictions have been overturned in the courts because of inconsistent administration over the years. Of course, Florida Condominium or Homeowner law also must be considered along with your documents. If your board has any questions concerning your association’s deed restrictions, a qualified association attorney should be consulted. Contact Frank with your HOA questions at Frank@ SuntreeFlorida.com.
