Fun Activities for the Weekends

Back in school. This is a favorite time of year for many children. If you are like most parents, you are probably looking for ways to keep your children happy, active, and safe as they go back to school. The freedom to go back to school comes with a set of challenges for many parents though, especially while also dealing with the COVID. Continue to remind your children to wash their hands and use sanitizer as needed.

We thought we could provide some ideas for fall activities for your kids on weekends and some basic health tips to ensure that you enjoy the most out of this time.

ACTIVITIES

While your kids are go back to school and getting used to their new “school routine”, keeping them entertained on the weekends can be a daunting task. Here are some ideas for keeping your kids busy and entertained on weekends: o Enjoy a picnic at a nearby park. o Pick flowers for friends and family. o Get creative with arts and crafts projects. o Decorate your sidewalk or driveway with chalk art. o Do sensory activities using things such as sand, shaving cream, silly putty, and colored water. o Play with bubbles. o Make art with finger painting. o Pitch a tent or build a pillow fort in your living room for some indoor camping. Do not forget the s’mores! o Hold a nature scavenger hunt in your backyard or at a nearby park. o Go on a nature hike. o While the temperatures are still very hot, turn your backyard into a water park. You can do this by making your own slip and slide or just playing with sprinklers, water balloons, squirt guns, and the garden hose. o Cool off at a local pool, beach, or lake. o Have a family game night. o Read books together. o Listen to music and have a dance party. o Cook together. o Fly a kite. o Visit a petting zoo. o Be a tourist in your own hometown.

HEALTH TIPS

Our area of Texas it is still very hot and kids will be spending time outdoors. It is important to keep them safe while they are having fun. Here are some great basic tips to keep in mind that can prevent injuries and accidents from ruining your family’s fun. • Drink enough water. • Protect skin from the sun. o Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside, and at least every 3 hours. o Use sun-protective clothing. o Try to stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm, when the sun is at the most intense. • Look for signs of heat exhaustion. Signs may include: o Elevated body temperature o Goose bumps o Fainting, dizziness, or weakness o Headache o Irritability o Confusion, disorientation o Muscle cramps o Nausea and/or vomiting • Avoid bug bites. Weekends are a great time to unwind as a family. However, with a little planning, it can still be safe and fun!

Pumpkin Snack Mix

TOTAL TIME: Prep: 25 min. Bake: 1 hour + cooling YIELD: about 5-1/2 quarts.

INGREDIENTS

3 quarts popped popcorn 4 cups Cheerios 4 cups Corn or Rice Chex 2 cups salted peanuts 1 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup butter, cubed 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 package (16 ounces) candy pumpkins

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large greased roasting pan, combine the popcorn, cereal and peanuts. In a large

saucepan, combine the brown sugar, corn syrup and butter; bring to a rolling boil. Boil for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat; quickly stir in vanilla and baking soda until mixture is light and foamy. 2. Immediately pour over popcorn mixture; toss to coat. Bake, uncovered, at 250° for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool completely. Stir in candy pumpkins. TasteofHome.com
