We will describe the impetus for, process behind, and results of an environmental scan to identify tools of excellence across health and long-term care settings; discuss select tools and their potential for use in quality improvement efforts in such settings; and prepare participants to make informed decisions about selecting and using the tools in their particular setting. Over the course of the session, participants will develop an understanding of the process and results of the environmental scan and the importance of using such tools for quality improvement in long-term care settings. They will learn to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of many of the tools currently being used and how to appropriately select and use tools of excellence in long-term care settings.

To Film or Not to Film? A Case Study on the Use of Cameras in Senior Living Communities Room: 708 This session will draw participants into the drama of an actual case brought before an administrative law judge by the presenter. The scenario: an assisted living community had filmed one of its memory-care residents because the resident had become violent with others on numerous occasions but settled down every time law enforcement arrived. The problem: feeling like they had run out of options, the community filmed the resident without consent during one of the violent outbursts to show to law enforcement. Argentum Professional Quality Standards A model for accountability in senior living Argentum has made a key first step in defining a model for quality and accountability in senior living by introducing a first generation of quality standards. The standards address consumer and resident rights, safety, quality improvement, workforce and regulatory compliance. These are designed to complement state laws and regulations governing the operations of senior living communities. Over time, the standards will include a collection of key quality indicators to benchmark and track a community’s quality improvement. “The creation of these standards have encouraged a robust discussion among our members about how to measure and promote quality in senior living,” said Argentum Standards Committee Chairman Pat Mulloy, who also serves as chairman
