“I wanted to let you know that this first week for my mom has been amazing. You worked with us for the past 6 months, very patiently, to make this happen. Her adjustment has been easy and she is happy. We had her over to our house today after Mass and by 3:00pm she said ‘I want to go home to my new apartment.’ What better recommendation of your community could there possibly be?" Sincerely, - Joanne G.

Managing with the Brain in Mind Location: 225B

How do you truly help your associates to think independently, to solve problems on their own, in a way that you have complete confidence in? Much has been written about how to be a great leader and a great manager – getting work done through other people. But do you still have

challenges? The field of NeuroLeadership has been developing in the last decade or so, and presents new ways of helping people to be successful based on how the brain really works. NeuroLeadership is a field of study connecting neuroscientific knowledge with the fields of leadership development, management training, change management, consulting and coaching. A major premise of this field is that we operate in a very noisy world and that noise prevents us from coming up with the best ideas and solutions. As leaders, we need to figure out how to create times that allow for our associates to tap into the deeper levels of their brains to access connections that can impact success on a day-to-day basis. We also need to be able to understand the basic human responses of minimizing threat and maximizing reward. This deeply rooted human system impacts our social experience at work and is something that we need to pay attention to in order to create an environment that brings out the best in our associates. Join this session and learn about NeuroLeadership, some basics on how the brain works, how to encourage more effective problem solving and decision making skills, and how to create a positive social environment that produces the results you’re looking for.

How to Make Affordable Assisted Living Work For You Location: 221C

The expanding senior population dictates that companies developing or operating senior housing are wise to prepare strategies that position them to take advantage of the growing market. Seniors are living longer and many do not have the resources to carry them through decades of retirement. They likely will need to rely on affordable housing and service options to help meet their needs. Senior housing executives should consider whether and how to incorporate affordable assisted living into their portfolios. Affordable assisted living generally has a tie-in to state affordable housing development and Medicaid reimbursement policies. Since 1999, Illinois has operated a successful affordable assisted living model called the SupportiveLiving Program. Using Illinois as a template, this session explores what it takes to be successful in the affordable assisted living business.

community and the surrounding neighborhood. The session will offer the perspective the owner/operator/developer (Shelter) and the architect and planner (HCM). The relevance to the Assisted Living audience is the desire to create dynamic communities that draw residents who will want to stay in their new homes as long as possible. The ability to remain in one’s home through the transition from independent living to assisted living is a key concern among consumers and their families. Both Shelter and HCM will convey their thoughts on the idea of “community integrated” senior living and its advantages as well as their opinions on why the idea has long term benefits for the broader retirement industry.

Ego vs. EQ: How Top Business Leaders Beat 8 Ego Traps with Emotional Intelligence Location: 227AB

Somewhere along the line, while climbing the corporate ladder or growing their own company, ego takes over and business owners and senior executives lose the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) that keeps them connected to their workforce and grounded in the day-to-day realities of their business. So, how can otherwise brilliant leaders keep from succumbing to self-sabotaging, ego-driven behaviors? This presentation defines and provides strategies for increasing Emotional Intelligence (EQ), particularly for executive “C-suite” leaders and company founders with high technical competence. The session explores the critical role Emotional Intelligence plays in business performance and provides the audience with practical tools for raising their own EQ—possibly the most important exercise an executive leader can do to ensure a prolonged career and catapult the business to the next level.

7:00 AM - 8:15 AM Identifying the DNA of Top Sales Performers Location: 226A

The investment senior care leaders make in their human capital directly impacts all business facets. Market competition is fierce, and finding top sales performers to distinguish and differentiate critical services is essential to bottom line profitability. The recruiting process has many layers, but preconceived ideas of what top sales talent looks like often skews an organization’s ability to make the right hire. Leaders attending this session will learn to position opportunities through the proper search engines to maximize exposure and increase the talent pool, construct job advertisements which attract top sales performers and speak to their motivators, solidify an effective screening and interviewing process which identifies sales talents and abilities through the use of specific interview questions, situational scenarios and behavior assessments, and retain top talent through proper onboarding and accountability best practices.

Across the Advocacy Spectrum Location: 226BC

Associations and other coalitions exist, in large part, to advance certain principles. This is chiefly accomplished by advocates who share a common purpose. But, what are the strategies, intricacies, and current practices today’s advocates undertake to inspire positive legislative and regulatory outcomes? As the senior living business continues to grow it is vital that lawmakers, policymakers, regulators, and other federal and state officials understand what the senior living business is all about, what it is not about, what we do, and what we don’t do which makes senior living such a popular option among seniors and families. Join us in an important, interactive, conversation about grassroots, grasstops, and political action committees as we uncover how advocates effectively take action across the “Advocacy Spectrum”.

Getting Prospects Ready with a Prospect-Centered Selling Model Location: 227C (Also on Wednesday at 3:15 PM)

Resident Assistant Legend Senior Living Windsor of Lakewood Ranch Lakewood Ranch, Florida Rosario grew up in Peru and moved to Florida where she worked at a manufacturing plant until it closed. She then obtained her certified nursing assistant license. “I like helping – for me, it’s a privilege,” she says. “My dad had dementia and…it gave me the opportunity to understand more at work by offering more compassion and patience.” In 2009 just a year after she started working at Windsor, doctors discovered she had a brain tumor, which was successfully removed. “It’s funny, I never in my life thought in my 40s I’d use a walker and have physical therapy,” she laughs. It makes me appreciate all those around me every day.”

Corry is classified as head housekeeper, but she also drives the bus, helps out with marketing calls, assists with filing and other administrative tasks. She also will fill in and serve meals and assist the kitchen staff if needed. Corry cared for both of her parents and since Corry joined the Holiday staff her in-laws have become residents. “Corry just her job with a sense of importance,” says her manager. “Caring for others is her nature above her position,” he says.

Vienna was raised by her grandparents, “which automatically gave me an amazing love for seniors,” she says. When Vienna graduated high school she received her certified nursing assistant license. “I wanted to give something back to my grandparents.” Her grandfather suffered from dementia for many years. She recalls working with an Alzheimer’s patient whose speech was very distorted and some of the residents were talking about how they acted when they were kids. “Suddenly, he said clear as a bell ‘I wasn’t a very good young man, but I found God and turned my life around.” Vienna started to cry. “He hadn’t spoken a clean full sentence since he moved here. It was beautiful.”

DJ, a retired military veteran, spends his off time with memory care residents doing what ever he can “to put a smile on their faces.” When DJ takes food upstairs to memory care residents, he doesn’t drop off and go, says his supervisor. “He makes the rounds, greeting every resident and giving them hugs.” DJ also has created his own charity to help feed the homeless. Once a month, he goes to an area with a high population of homeless and feeds them a meal he has cooked himself. When he started, he worked out of the trunk of his car but has since partnered with a local church and feeds more than 500 homeless people a month.

BETH DREAS Cook BMA Management Heritage Woods of Centralia Centralia, Illinois Beth started out working as a dietician in hospitals and nursing homes. She discovered senior living when her husband’s uncle found a home there. She took a job as diet4ician in a senior living community and soon found herself doing one of her passions – cooking. She learned to cook when living in a boarding school run by nuns. The other kids would go home on the weekends, but she had no home to return to so she’d go to the kitchen and learn to cook. “Cooking brings people together,” she says. “There are so many heroes. I just want to be a little voice of happiness in the world.”
