PC-PAL: Using Metrics to Measure Person-Centered Practices

ROOM 19 Assisted living communities seek to provide person-centered care, but can lack the tools to assess person-centeredness. Person-Centered Practices in Assisted Living (PC-PAL) is a new, free tool to measure and monitor person-centeredness across domains ranging from well-being and belonging to individualized care and services, workplace services, and caregiver-resident relationships. This interactive session will present the PC-PAL, which was developed by assisted living providers, staff, residents and their family members, organizational representatives, and researchers. Creative Strategies for Financing Senior Care

ROOM 5 More than 70% of Americans older than 40 aren’t confident that they will be able to finance or make the right decision for long term care and senior living, but there are creative strategies to help older adults finance their new home immediately with your community. For example, more than 17 million veterans are eligible for a pension that helps them pay for care, but fewer than 5% receive it. Many older adults have a life insurance policy that can be converted to a long term care policy. There are also realtor networks specializing in senior housing and the potential of house deferments – a resource basically untapped in the United States but widely used overseas.

Alzheimer’s: A Woman’s Disease

ROOM 24 Alzheimer’s disease affects more women than men from a diagnosis standpoint. The Alzheimer’s Association’s 2011 Facts and Figures report shows that 3.4 million of the 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s are female. Women are also impacted by Alzheimer’s as the primary caregivers. Sixty percent of Alzheimer’s caregivers are women and of those women, 68 percent say they have emotional stress from caregiving. Learn about the many ways Alzheimer’s impacts women today and ways to cope with this increasing challenge.

ROOM 19 Structured recreational and leisure activities (RLAs) are critical for a sense of wellbeing, particularly for older adults living with dementia. There have been documented long term effects of RLAs such as delayed progression of cognitive impairment and the reduction in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, which can result in decreased use of psychotropic medications. The presentation will explore the link between fun as a motivator and technology as a way to provide individuals with opportunities for person-directed self-expression, which can improve mental, physical and societal health. Presenters will discuss the role of gerontechnology and offer strategies to integrate engaging technology-based, person-centered brain health and recreational programs into relationship-centered community initiatives.

Six Lessons Learned (Good and Terrible) While Touring Senior Living Communities

ROOM 13 Senior living writer Steve Moran shares lessons learned on his tour of senior living communities around the country. By the end of 2014, Moran had visited close to 40 communities and says a few visits have been “amazingly wonderful” while some have been “alarmingly terrible.” This session will look at six solid lessons Moran learned from his tours that he will share to help communities engage with each visitor, translating into higher occupancies, waiting lists, happier residents, and team members. She also has grown the Seniors Serving Seniors program enabling residents to become actively engaged and participate with volunteer programs within Hidden Lakes and the City of Salem. She has instituted active reading programs with elementary schools and has created a relationship with Habitat for Humanity. Joyce is a great listener, always upbeat and ready with a warm hug. She’s a skilled pool player who plays with residents, teaching them trick shots and other game tips.

Edward embraces diversity, connection, and compassion and has created innovative and ingenious ideas for activities. He has picked up other residents at nearby senior housing communities in the Autumn Leaves bus and brought them over for activities, connecting with other life engagement managers in the area and offering residents the opportunity to socialize with other older adults outside of the community. He works to raise Autumn Leaves’ profile in the community. The community adopted a family for the holidays and to raise money for the project he organized an Ugly Sweater Bingo Night, and the money collected was used to buy gifts for the family. He also uses his musical talents to bring joy to residents.

Asner also stars in the Disney feature The Games Maker and recently completed a guest star role in the CBS sitcom Mom. Asner has more than 100 TV credits and has lent his voice to popular cartoon shows such as The Simpsons, Spiderman and Boondocks.
