care Management: Here to Help
There is much to know about the needs of seniors and the complexities of “Aging in Place” options. Navigating our complex health care system along with all the legal, social, medical and financial aspects can be overwhelming for anyone. Care managers can provide the guidance and support you need to assist you or your loved one with this process.
A Care Manager is a skilled professional, often times a social worker or nurse who completes an initial assessment and develops a care plan as a guide, with recommended support and services.

in-Home assessment: The Care Manager determines the level of care needed by the client to fit their specific needs. An assessment is conducted that includes their current health status as well as a review of their health insurance, previous doctor’s visits and current health care plan. Short & long-Term management:
Primary beneficiaries of Care Management services include families with aging parent or anyone with a recent medical event that resulted in an acute decline in health. For Shortterm instances, the care manager will determine home safety and help you locate health care agencies and medical equipment. For long-term cases, they provide ongoing care for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease or those who have suffered a stroke, heart attack, and orthopedic conditions such as a broken hip.

Caring for Someone Caring for Someone with Alzheimer’s with Alzheimer’s
Provide Social Interaction and Activities
Alzheimer's can lead to social isolation and loneliness. Therefore, it is important to provide social interaction and activities for the patient. You can involve them in activities that they enjoy, such as listening to music, reading, or doing puzzles. You can also involve them in social activities such as visiting family and friends, going for walks, or attending events.
Take Care of Yourself
Caring for someone with Alzheimer's can be emotionally and physically draining. Therefore, it is essential to take care of yourself. You can do this by taking breaks when needed, practicing self-care, and seeking support from family, friends, or support groups. You can also seek the help of a professional caregiver to give you a break and take care of the patient.
Caring for someone with Alzheimer's can be a challenging journey that requires patience, empathy, and understanding. Creating a safe and comfortable environment, establishing a routine, using simple language and communication techniques, providing social interaction and activities, and taking care of yourself are some of the ways in which you can live with someone with Alzheimer's. Remember that caring for someone with Alzheimer's is a team effort, and it is essential to seek support from family, friends, or healthcare professionals when needed.

Bridging the Gap
There comes a point in many older adults’ lives when they begin needing a little assistance with everyday tasks, yet are far from needing the oversight of home care aids or assisted living. What are some of the solutions to help them stay actively engaged in the life they know and love? For the most part, that answer lies right in the community.
Family is the First Line
Traditionally, families provide that first line of support. Helping to care for those who cared for us is one of the greatest gifts in life. But sometimes the physical and emotional load can be overwhelming. Many adult children are also juggling the demands of their own children and careers. And of course, there are some seniors who do not have family close by – or any family at all – to help

Community-based Organizations
Looking into the community to augment help from family is very common. It could be simply a helping hand from a neighbor, from one’s church or synagogue or from a senior center. There are also volunteer organizations such as the Village-to-Village network and others that seek to support independence for seniors.
Other Options are Coming
Given that number of Americans over 80 is set to triple in the next 3 decades, there is a keen focus on finding additional solutions. From elder tech options to platforms that match seniors with vetted helpers, the future is looking bright for older adults.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STROKES ABOUT STROKES
Did you know that Strokes are the #5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States? They occur for 2 reasons: a clot or obstruction of blood flow to the brain (called “Ischemic") and when a blood vessel ruptures ("hemorrhagic"). Both cause death in regions of the brain from lack of oxygen and blood flow.
Regardless of type, the likelihood is you either know someone or will know someone who will suffer a stroke. The risk for having a stroke increases after the age of 65, however, a stroke can occur at any age. My husband, age 62, had a stroke on Christmas Day 2022 – it came as a surprise to my entire family, but thankfully I knew the signs of a stroke and was able to get him medical attention quickly.
To remember the signs of a stroke use the acronym F.A.S.T.:
F: Face drooping
A: Arm weakness
S: Speech slurring / difficulty
T: Time to call 9-1-1
80% of strokes are preventable. The risk factors that are within your control include: maintaining a healthy Blood Pressure (120/80 is the healthy range), not smoking, managing diabetes, physical inactivity, obesity, high cholesterol, carotid artery disease, and atrial fibrillation (aFib – a heart rhythm disorder). Be sure to get regular checkups and know your numbers!
KNOW MORE
There are risk factors we have no control over, including age (risk goes up the older we get), family history, gender (women have more strokes then men and stroke kills more women than men), race (African-Americans have a higher risk of death from stroke), prior stroke (once you’ve had a stroke you are at a higher risk of having another).

E-WASTE
A RELATIVELY NEW PROBLEM BUT A BIG PROBLEM
The EPA defines e-waste as electronics that are nearing the end of their useful life and discarded. For example: mobile phones, computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines.
According to a UN report, more than 48 million tons of ewaste were produced globally in 2018 — equivalent in mass to all the commercial aircraft ever built. And it’s a problem that’s only growing in scale. Think about how often you and the people in your household upgrade your mobile phones or computers.
Collection and repurposing/recycling of some of the components that go into electronics can help stem the flow of e-waste into landfills. For example, at the recent Tokyo Olympics, the 5,000 medals presented to athletes were made from recycled small electronics — including more than 6 million mobile phones.
While many communities have their own e-waste collection days, they are usually few and far between. The Junkluggers sponsors free e-waste collection events to give you another opportunity to responsibly dispose of your unwanted electronics.

Medicare 2023 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans)
Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”
Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance
Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)
$1,600 deductible (per benefit period)
It is possible to pay the $1600 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.
Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.
Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.
No coverage outside USA. No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Medicare Part B Medical Insurance
Most people pay monthly $164.90 (Premium could be higher based on income)
$226 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)
80/20 after deductible.
Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits
Most doctors accept Medicare.
No coverage outside the USA. No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap
Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.
Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment
(Other special enrollment periods may be avalable)
These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits
When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered
Can provide benefits outside USA
Plans are available through insurance companies.
Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.
There is NO additional cost to use the services of a full time insurance professional. Please call us or a broker in your local area for additional assistance.

HOW YOU MOVE MATTERS
There’s a reason they say moving is the third most stressful event in life. Not only does it throw your typical routine out the window and add to an already growing to-do list, but living out of boxes for days or weeks, and not knowing where things are, can weigh heavily on you emotionally and physically.
One important thing to understand is that there is a real difference between a move management service and everyday movers. While movers might handle packing, driving from one location to another, and unpacking, a move management organization goes far beyond to assist you from creating a complete inventory of your possessions for a space plan to setting up your new home (some will even make your bed).
Whether you’re moving to a senior living community or relocating to another home, your move management company should be able to fulfill all the needs that come with your transition. This could include assisting with donating items to a local charity, short and long-term storage options, clearing out and preparing your home for sale, and most importantly understanding the emotional impact that comes with moving from your home of 50+ years.
WayForth has helped over 15,000 people since our start in 2016. We have learned that it is possible to reduce the stress associated with relocation by being prepared. Our move management experts help with downsizing, floor planning, packing and unpacking, and more. WayForth can help you or a family member with our personalized moving solutions to fit everyone’s unique needs.

VOLUNTEERING VOLUNTEERING WITH A PURPOSE WITH A PURPOSE
How often have you walked out to your car to go somewhere, without giving it a thought? Just for a moment, consider the freedom that having transportation gives you. Whether it is to a doctor’s appointment, shopping, or just a quick errand. If you are fortunate enough to experience these freedoms, you might consider being a volunteer that can give those freedoms to an older adult in need.
Consider for a moment that you are discharged from an inpatient stay with instructions of no driving. You would find yourself deliberating means of navigating transportation for follow-up care and simply getting around. Many older adults live on a very fixed low income and cannot afford paid transportation such as Uber or Lyft. This is where the Wellness Center for Older Adults and Project Independence (PI) can assist. The PI program involves short-term transportation assistance for older adults who are transitioning from a recent hospitalization. They often have followup medical appointments and are unable to drive themselves but are able (and required) to get themselves in and out of a vehicle.
As a PI volunteer, you set your own schedule. Ride requests are emailed to volunteers who can "sign up" for whatever rides work for your schedule. Volunteers use their personal vehicles and fuel. Some of our PI clients might inquire about help “sweeping floors” or “helping with laundry” while they are recovering from their surgery. Those assignments are again up to the volunteer. There are no hourly volunteer quotas or requirements. You “work” when you want. No pressure. The clients are always so appreciative of any help provided!
KNOW MORE
For a very fulfilling volunteer role, consider becoming a Project Independence volunteer. What a wonderful way to “give back” to those who need assistance. What a wonderful opportunity to share our freedom and good fortune.

Choosing a home care agency can be a challenging task, as it's important to find one that can provide exceptional care and meet individual needs. One option to consider is a franchise-owned agency that is run by the owner on a daily basis. There are several benefits to working with this type of agency.
Firstly, the personalized attention provided by the owner-run agency ensures that clients receive customized service based on their specific needs and preferences. The owner has a direct investment in the success of the company and will work hard to provide the best possible care.
Secondly, an owner-run agency will have local knowledge and strong ties in the community, which can be critical in ensuring that clients receive treatment that is suited to their individual needs.
Thirdly, quality control is emphasized in owner-run agencies, as the owner has a direct stake in the company's success. This focus on maintaining high quality standards can provide clients with peace of mind that their loved one is receiving the best possible care.
Fourthly, franchise-owned agencies have access to resources and assistance from the franchisor, which can ensure consistent service even as the client's needs change over time.
Fifthly, the established reputation of franchise businesses can offer clients reassurance that they are working with a reputable company.
Lastly, access to resources, training, and assistance from the franchisor can help owner-run agencies provide a higher quality of care.
Choosing a home care agency that is part of a franchise but operated by the owner can provide clients with the best of both worlds – the personal touch of a locally-owned business and the resources and support of a well-established brand. The owner emphasizes the importance of a personal home care experience to best meet the needs of clients.

Paying For Senior Housing Paying For Senior Housing
Senior housing is becoming increasingly expensive, making it challenging to know how to pay for the best possible care for our loved ones. However, there are several options available that can help you afford the care your loved one needs.
One option is private pay, which means paying for care without assistance from other programs. Private pay may be a good option for those who have longterm care insurance, savings, retirement accounts, or other assets that can be used to pay for care. However, keep in mind that private pay can be costly, and future planning should be considered.
Assisted living communities provide seniors with varying levels of care to meet their individual needs.
All-inclusive pricing means a single monthly fee covers room and board, meals, housekeeping, laundry services, WIFI, electricity, transportation, and daily activities. Fee-for-service pricing means a resident pays only for those services they use. Three main categories of care provided in assisted living communities are supervisory care, personal care, and directed care.
Another option is VA Aid & Attendance, which is a pension benefit available to veterans or surviving

spouses who need additional money to help care for ailing parents or loved ones. This benefit provides tax-free payments to Veterans who served during wartime, who need help with daily activities, or are housebound. To qualify for this pension, the Veteran or their surviving family need to meet the means-tested income and asset thresholds.
It's essential for residents to understand all of the costs associated with moving to an assisted living community, such as the community fee, apartment fee, and the fee for their preferred level of care, to make informed decisions regarding their care and financial obligations.
The median annual cost for assisted living in Dallas-Fort Worth is $50,340 per year, and costs have been rising at an annual increase of 313%. To afford the best possible care for your loved one, consider all of the available options and plan ahead for the longterm costs associated with their care.
