How to Stay Safe from Senior Scams

Senior citizens are often preyed upon by scammers who use a variety of methods to coerce or steal money.

Here are a few of the most common scams:

n Elderly residents receive phone calls from people pretending to be their grandchildren and requesting money be wired immediately in order to save them from some kind of emergency.

n A romance scam where a victim is befriended on social media or dating site by someone who develops an online relationship with the victim in order to earn their trust. Then the boyfriend or girlfriend has some type of “emergency” where they need money immediately to remedy the emergency.

n A promised payment that requires the victim to pay processing expenses such as winning a sweepstakes. Victims are told that they need to pay expenses in order to release the money. Payment is often requested in the form of gift cards.

Scammers can be very persuasive and use tactics that prey on people’s fears and vulnerabilities. They spoof caller ID numbers, email addresses and names to appear legitimate and

make threats that sound credible. The perpetrator may impersonate the IRS, a police department, the Social Security Administration, a bank or a utility company. If you receive a call or email that seems like a scam, the best thing to do is hang up immediately or delete the email – do not engage and do not send money or gift cards.

Remember, scammers often evoke emotions that make you feel like you need to take action now! These can be red flags that you MUST pay attention to. If you feel the caller is trying to create anxiety around a loved one, or a financial decision, this should set off alarm bells. You need to hang up the phone and contact your local police department. Do not share any information and do not stay on the phone.

If you, or someone you know, receives a phone call or email believed to be a scam, please contact your police department and report the loss to the Federal Trade Commission. You can also make an online report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. ~

It’s Time to Create, or Update, Estate Plans

If you haven’t created an estate plan or have one but the documents may be outdated, you might be putting yourself and your family at risk if the unthinkable, such as becoming incapacitated or passing away, should happen to you.

To assist you with getting started on creating or updating your plan, it helps to understand these five important documents that are part of many estate plans:

1. WILL

A will provides instructions for when you die. You appoint a personal representative (or “executor”) to pay final expenses and taxes and distribute your assets. Remember that beneficiary designations on 401(k) plans, IRAs, insurance policies, etc., supersede what you have in your will. If you have minor children, a will is the only way to designate a guardian for them.

2. DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY

A power of attorney lets you name an agent, or attorney-in-fact, to act on your behalf. You can give this individual broad or limited management powers. Choose them carefully

because they will generally be able to sell, invest, and spend your assets. A traditional power of attorney terminates upon your disability or death. However, a durable power of attorney will continue during incapacity to provide a financial management safety net. A durable power of attorney terminates upon your death.

3. HEALTH CARE POWER OF ATTORNEY

A durable power of attorney for health care, also called a health care proxy, authorizes someone to make medical decisions for you in the event you are unable to do so yourself. This document and a living will can be invaluable for avoiding family conflicts and possible court intervention if you’re unable to make your own health care decisions. Remember to review this document regularly to ensure the right person is designated to make any necessary medical decisions.

If you are a parent, be aware that once a child turns 18, you need a health care power of attorney for them so you can engage with their medical professionals.

4. LIVING WILL

A living will expresses your intentions regarding the use of life-sustaining measures in the event of a terminal illness. It expresses what you want but does not give anyone the authority to speak for you.

5. REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST

By transferring assets into a revocable trust, you can provide for their continued management during your lifetime (when you’re incapacitated, for example), at your death, and even for generations to come. Your revocable living trust lets trust assets avoid probate and reduces the chance that personal information will become part of public records.

Along with working with an attorney to create or update these, and possibly other estate planning documents, remember to:

n Make sure your loved ones are able to access your documents or know whom to contact (such as your attorney) when they need them.

n Go over account titling, powers of attorney, and successor trustee provisions to be certain the right individuals have access to funds.

n Determine who should have information on electronic passwords and online banking access so they can access information, update automatic payments, etc.

If you have a spouse or partner or adult children, you should talk to them about their estate plans along with creating or updating your own.~

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”

Is A Reverse Mortgage Right for You?

A reverse mortgage is often used to allow a homeowner to remain in their home both from an affordability standpoint and the desire to remain in the home they cherish versus a senior living community. Although senior communities have amenities that are attractive, they can come with a cost out of reach for many retired seniors. Rehoming Your Senior Pet

There may come a time in the course of your pet ownership where you may become unable to care for your pet. Whether it is due to a move, health or other reason, some owners find themselves in the precarious position of needing to surrender their pet.

Unfortunately, if circumstances change, even the most devoted animal lovers may find themselves in a situation where they are no longer able to care for their pet.

Many senior pets who are surrendered to shelters are never adopted and may be euthanized, even though they still have lots of love to give. More than 6.5 million pets are surrendered to shelters each year. Surrendering a pet to a shelter can be very stressful on a pet, especially an older pet who may not be accustomed to a lot of noise and activity. Although shelter staff do everything they can to create a good environment for the animals in the shelter, it is not the same as being a home with a loving family to provide one-on-one attention to the pet.

ReHoming is a wonderful option if you are willing to take the time to find a good home for your senior pet. Some people often rehome their

pet on their own, finding a friend or relative who is able to care for the pet. However, animal advocates recommend using a rehoming service to ensure that the process is safe and reliable. Working with a service can provide you with a wider pool of potential adoptees who would be suitable for your pet. These services are also skilled at screening unqualified or dangerous candidates, so

you can rest assured that your pet is going to a good home.

Finding a new home for your pet is a better solution than surrendering your pet because it allows you to be sure that your pet goes to a good home and his fate is completely within your control. Oftentimes, the stress of being in a shelter can change a pet’s personality, making it more difficult for them to be adopted.

How Rehoming Works – The rehoming programs are fairly simple and straightforward. You simply need a photo of your pet, and to post some basic health and behavior information about your pet, as well as a short bio describing your pet. From there, you

will be contacted about potential adoptees who are interest in adopting your pet. You can review the applications and reach out directly to potential adopters to learn more about them. Once you have decided on the perfect home for your pet, both parties will sign a document making the adoption legally binding.

Rehoming does not cost you anything. The adoptee will pay the rehoming service a nominal fee to adopt your pet and is a good way to gauge whether the person is seri-

Non Medical Home Care Definitions

24 HOUR ON CALL – Refers to “round the clock care” in a home environment. The care may be shared by multiple caregivers or by a single caregiver.

24 HOUR CONTACT – Refers to someone being available 24 hours a day to speak with you.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) – Provides personal care such as bathing, dressing, changing linens, transporting, and other essential activities. CNAs are trained, tested, certified and work under the supervision of an RN or LPN.

HOMEMAKER / COMPANION

– Non-medical assistance with meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, errands, activities, outings, companionship, and other household duties.

MED-ALERT SYSTEMS – Personal medical alert products activated by pushing a button.

MEDICATION REMINDER –

Assistance with reminding an individual about medications but not dispensing medications.

MINIMUM HOURS – This refers to the minimum number of hours that an agency provides service on a per visit basis.

PERSONAL CARE – Non-medical assistance with bathing, dressing, hygiene, eating, and other personal care issues.

TRANSPORTATION – Rides to shopping appointments and other outings.

Home Care - Not Just for Private Homes

When you hear about home care, you usually think about care for those who live in their own homes. Home care assistance is so much more.

Assisted living facilities and nursing homes are bursting at the seams. Many facilities across the Twin Cities are faced with staffing shortages, lack of resources and limited space for new residents. Facility staff often care for multiple individuals, meaning the one-on-one care they are able to provide is minimal. Hiring a private caregiver to fill in the gaps can make a world of difference. One family had this to say about supplementing a private caregiver with facility care: “Mom adores the facility and staff in her building, but to no fault of their own, they are very busy and understaffed. Having Sandy provide additional care brings joy to mom’s routine. We don’t feel the stress and worry about her wellbeing and are confident that she is in good hands and getting the care and social interaction she needs.”

How Caregivers Assist:

n Interim care while on a waitlist. Moving from Independent Living to Assisted Living, or just getting into a facility, can mean waiting weeks or even months. An individual needing care doesn’t have the luxury of waiting. A caregiver provides supplemental assistance

so you can feel confident that your loved one is cared for in their current residence.

n Residents receive additional support. Facilities are faced with staff shortages, meaning less individualized care. Facilities can’t staff for transportation or have the manpower to bring every resident outside consistently. A caregiver gives 1:1 companionship and care by getting residents out for dinner, or a short walk outside.

For others, a caregiver’s presence adds peace of mind. They assist with care needs overnight and are an added safeguard against accidents.

There are many care options to ensure a senior’s needs are being met. Whether in a private home, living facility, or even a family member’s home, there are options to remain as independent as possible in every stage of life. ~

Home Health Care Definitions

24 HOUR CARE – Refers to someone being available 24 hours a day to speak with you.

CARDIAC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment, specific diet information, and management of the disease process, medication management and education. Cardiac care is a program designed to help a person with heart disease return to health. Cardiac care may consist of exercise, modifying risk factors to prevent further heart damage, or psychological rehabilitation.

DIABETIC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment specific diet information, management of the disease process, medication management and education on all the above. Services are provided by Registered Nurse under the supervision of a M.D. Some agencies may have certified diabetic nurse instructors or cardiac care specialty RN’s in their employ.

ENTERAL FEEDING – Enteral feeding, or tube feeding, is a way to deliver nutrients through a tube if you cannot take food or drink through your mouth.

Health Agencies are not on a specified time frame.

HOSPICE – Refers to a comprehensive program of care to patients and families facing a life threatening illness. Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment. The dying are comforted. Professional medical care is given, and sophisticated symptom relief provided.

INTRAVENOUS THERAPY (IV) – Refers to any medical treatments/medications that need to be introduced into the body via a patient’s veins. Numerous IV Therapies can be provided in a patient’s home under supervision of a MD. Some of these include: inter-infective/antibiotic therapies, hydration therapy, pain management, chemotherapy and central line care and maintenance.

NON-MEDICAL HOME CARE –Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s), homemaking, companionship and other non-medical in home care. These services are available for hire after, or in conjunction with, Medicare certified services. Private payment, Medicaid and Veterans Benefits are a few of the ways personal care can be paid for.

HOUR MINIMUM – The least number of hours a Non-Medical Home Care Agency will be available for hire. Medicare certified Home

PSYCHIATRIC CARE – Refers to the agencies’ ability to offer services related to psychiatric support with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment

of mental illness. Services may include counseling or administering of medications.

SOCIAL WORKER – A clinical social worker whose purpose in health care is to enhance, promote, maintain, and restore the best possible social abilities of the patient or family. Services provided may be preventive, developmental, or remedial in nature.

THERAPY SERVICES (ST, PT, OT, RT)

Speech Therapy – Refers to services to assess and treat speech and swallowing disorders. Speech therapy can treat speech, language, cognitive skills or swallowing.

Physical Therapy – Refers to services for the treatment and the rehabilitation process where a physical therapist will often stretch, strengthen, facilitate muscles, challenge balance, test coordination abilities, teach home exercise programs and enhance basic mobility skills.

Occupational Therapy – Refers to services to assess and treat patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments. Patients may have mental, physical, developmental, or emotional disabilities. Therapists also help them to develop, recover, or maintain daily living and work skills. Occupational therapists help clients not only to

improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for permanent loss of function.

Respiratory Therapy – Refers to services for care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system. It may include the therapeutic use of medical gases and their equipment, environmental control systems, humidification, aerosols, ventilator support, bronchi pulmonary drainage and exercise, respiratory rehabilitation, assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maintenance of natural, artificial, and mechanical airways.

TRACH CARE – Refers to care

administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.

WOUND CARE – Refers to services for providing diagnosis and treatment for ulcers, pressure sores and other wounds. Treatments may include but is not limited to irrigations, dressing, and wound vacs. Some agencies may employ specialty nurses to provide and instruct in care specifically for patients with more complicated wounds. ~

Essential Foods To Help Ensure Good Health

It has become increasingly evident that nutritious food has disease fighting potential.

Eating well and good health are seemingly intertwined. While eating right cannot prevent or cure every illness, eating nutritious foods will help to give us long-term good health. For a number of chronic conditions, including or excluding certain foods in your diet, will help ease symptoms or even reverse the progression of certain diseases. Listed below are some general guidelines for eating for good health:

n Eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and grains

n Eat a variety of colorful vegetables, and for leafy greens– the darker, the more nutrients

n Eat red meat sparingly

n Eat fish two to three times per week, and fatty fish such as salmon or tuna are beneficial

n Eating super foods such as yogurt, berries, salmon, dark leafy greens and beans and legumes are packed with nutrients and offer a variety of health benefits.

We will explore a few essential foods for good health, and list their benefits, as well.

Apricots – Are full of beta-carotene and other carotenoids and antioxidants. Some of apricots’ carotenoids offer more antioxidants than be-

ta-carotene, making them even more powerful as cancer fighters. Apricots contain some vitamin C, which keeps skin and tissues healthy. They are also rich in heart healthy fiber, which lowers blood cholesterol levels and helps individuals with diabetes maintain stable blood sugar levels.

Carrots – Offer a natural defense against heart disease, strokes, cancer, cataracts and constipation. Studies have shown carrots can reduce the risk of heart attacks in women by 22% and can also reduce women’s stroke risk by 68%. Women who did have a stroke or CVA were less likely to become disabled or die.

Garlic – Can reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. Garlic is a powerful antioxidant, which includes vitamin C which helps to reduce the damage that LDL (Lousy) cholesterol can cause. Garlic has also been shown to make small improvements in blood pressure, by increasing the blood flow to the capillaries.

There are many more healthy foods to explore that are not listed in this brief article.

We all want to enjoy good health for as long as possible and by making small incremental changes in one’s diet, it’s taking the right step forward!~

Hospice Care Definitions

HOSPICE Hospices provide individuals facing terminal illness with care at home or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to assist patients to live the last stage of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than treatment.

Services Provided:

N-NURSE – Assesses patient’s physical needs, develops and coordinates the plan of care, ensures symptom control and management, provides patient/family teaching as needed

SW-SOCIAL WORKER – Assesses patient and family emotional and social needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, referrals and support to meet identified needs

CHAPLAIN – Assesses patient and family spiritual needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, assists with memorial preparations.

HOME HEALTH AIDE – Provides direct personal care to patient, emotional support to patient and family, reports identified needs to RN.

VOLUNTEER – Provides respite and needed non-medical services for patients and their families, offers support at time of death and during bereavement.

Levels of Care:

RO-ROUTINE CARE – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in maintaining the individual’s symptom management. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence, a retirement community,

an assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility.

RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a long-term care facility depending on the condition of the individual. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the Long-term care facility.

GIP – General In-Patient Care –Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This level of care is usually due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required. If an individual is at a care facility, room and board are covered by hospice during this period.

CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided at the individual’s residence no matter where that may be. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent death and family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for end of life or other crises that requires

a constant presence by a nurse or care team.

24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice,24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays.

AROMATHERAPY – Uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering one’s mood, cognitive, psychological or physical well-being. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief

is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting.

INDIGENT PATIENTS – Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients.

IN-PATIENT CARE – These hospices offer full hospice services in their on-campus unit or building. The patient moves into the inpatient care facility to receive their hospice services rather than in the patients’ home setting.

LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPY –

Used as a method for relaxation to alleviate stress, anxiety and pain with a light hands-on approach, as well as providing an alternative to those who can’t take medication or prefer not to. Massage therapy has become essential in hospice care. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

MUSIC THERAPY – Music Therapy

is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE –

Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.

PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness –whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a

PCP-OVERSIGHT – Can the hospice patient retain their own primary care physician in addition to the hospice medical director? All hospice organizations require a medical director, a physician to oversee their care. Many times the hospice medical director will work in conjunction with the patient’s own physician. The patient, family and hospice team can determine which physicians will oversee the care and certify the hospice eligibility criteria.

PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to

brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare.

VA CONTRACT – If the patient is not a Medicare Recipient and is covered by the VA, the VA will make payments directly to their contracted agencies. If a patient is a Veteran, but is a Medicare Recipient, they may choose any Medicare approved hospice agency for their care. ~

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY – Assisted Living Communities provide Homecare Services and amenities in apartment environments. Homecare Service offerings can range from Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) such as bathing and grooming, toileting or ambulation to medication management and more. Pricing may vary from base rent plus A la Carte services to base plus Tiers/Levels of Care to All-inclusive. Amenities also vary by community

and may include meal plans, laundry and housekeeping options.

COOPERATIVE HOUSING – Cooperative housing is an alternate form of ownership of homes and property in which the property is owned by an organization and then sold as shares to the residents of the community. Cooperative Housing splits costs on shared housing amenities.

DAY CARE – Any provider can elect to provide day/night services on a short or long term basis. Rates typically include a place to rest, one or two meals and snacks and activities for the day. Licensed communities are prohibited by law to promote these services without a specific license.

DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING & URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD)

– helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants.

HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM –

(Sec 236) Property owners in this program make mortgage payments that are based on a 1% mortgage interest rate. HUD then provides a subsidy to their lender to cover the difference between 1% and the market interest rate on the property’s loan. Participating households are required to pay rent equal to the greater of 30% of their adjusted income (not to exceed the market rent) or the basic rent amount set by HUD for that particular property. Any amount paid by the household that is more than basic rent is considered excess rent, which the owner pays back to HUD in repayment of the subsidy.

MEDICAID WAIVER – An assisted living waiver may be used to transition individuals out of nursing facilities or to provide persons at risk of institutionalization with options for remaining in their communities. Assisted living waivers are designed to provide an alternative to more costly nursing home care.

RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME –

Assisted living homes are private residential homes that typically have a small number of residents who live together and receive care from live-in caretakers. Adult family homes offer room and board for seniors who want a more private, home-like community. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing are provided. Amenities and nursing services vary greatly between homes. Ask about their services when you tour. They are also referred to as Residential Care Homes Most accept private pay; Medicaid in some instances.

RESPITE CARE / SHORT-TERM

STAY – Otherwise known as a shortterm stay. Any provider of IL, AL, ALZ or SNF care can elect to provide fully furnished accommodations to a person for a short period of time. Rates usually quoted on a daily basis and are typically inclusive of all services and amenities.

RETIREMENT COMMUNITY –

Housing designed specifically for mature adults. Typically Studio, 1 BR or 2 BR rental apartments with full kitchens, and private baths are available. Services include meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; formal libraries, computer stations, swimming pools, gardens, and other social gathering spaces. Rates are monthly, and are typically based on size/location of apartment.

SECURED UNIT – A secured unit dedicated to Alzheimer’s/Dementia residents to prevent wandering outside the community without supervision.

SKILLED CARE – 24 hour

licensed nursing services, eight hours of which are RN covered. Patient may receive rehab services either inpatient or outpatient and may be fully dependent for ADL’s. Patients receive medications by an RN according to a licensed physicians orders.

SKILLED NURSING FACILITY –

Facilities provide 24/7 care for residents and offer full assistance with ADL’s. Daily rates typically include a furnished bedroom and a private or shared bath, meals, activities, transportation, phone service, cable television and all personal/nursing

care. Payor sources usually accepted are Medicare, Medicaid, VA, some insurance plans and private sources.

TRACH CARE - Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.

VENTILATOR - Moves breatheable air into and out of the lungs, to provide the mechanism of breathing for a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or is breathing insufficiently.

WANDERGUARD - Offered at some facilities. A resident with memory loss or confusion wears a small discrete pendant. Each external door in the care home is fitted with a radio detector which detects when a pendant moves near an exit. The WanderGuard will sound an audible alarm, alerting the staff of a patient wandering. ~
