Inspiring & Empowering OUR MISSION: Promoting independence, social interaction, and employment opportunities for adults who live with intellectual disabilities JOB TRAINING: Members receive on the job training with a staff vocational instructor at local businesses. These small groups are known as ‘enclaves.’ Members learn valuable skills and gain work experience at these enclaves, while also earning wages. PEP GIVES PURPOSE THROUGH DAY SERVICES: PEP provides career prep and vocational training, a literacy program, music, exercise, science, arts and crafts and so much more. PEP exists to provide a pathway to a healthier and fuller life for all members. PEP MICRO-BUSINESSES: Ceramics and Crafts Store Members spend their days creating beautiful ceramic and art pieces to sell in the store, at the Bluffton Farmers Market, and at local venues. Lawn and Home Care Our hard-working, experienced lawn crew members are trained to take on any lawn and home owner maintenance task for a very reasonable price.

South Carolina Equipment Distribution Program
The South Carolina Equipment Distribution Program (SCEDP) provides NO-COST phone equipment and alerting devices to South Carolinians living with a hearing or speech challenge.
How to Apply Fill out an application.
To qualify, an individual must have a hearing or speech challenge, have active phone service, and live in South Carolina.
Have a professional certifier complete the certification form on the back of the application.
Individuals who qualify for the program are provided equipment to use as long as they remain in the state, have active phone service, and have a need for the device. Different options are available depending on the individual’s needs.
Send in the completed application with a copy of the individual’s South Carolina ID and a current phone bill. Once all the information is processed, equipment will be shipped to the individual. (Equipment may take up to 30 business days to ship.)

As the Chair of the Disabilities Coalition (DC) of Beaufort County, I am pleased to present the first edition of the Beaufort County disAbilities Resource Guide for all community members. We are excited to share the resources and informative articles contained in this book and additionally located in an on-line digital version at www.disabilitiescoalition.org. The DC is composed of members from various non profits, governmental agencies, volunteers and business people who strive to make our community inclusive and equitable for all. Our mission is to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities in Beaufort County by working together to provide, improve, and expand needed services and opportunities for our community with disabled members. The DC is one of many groups working to make Beaufort County a great place to live, work and relax for every member of our community. The Lowcountry is teaming with great people, beautiful spaces and endless opportunities for every person to live a full and satisfying life. Our goal with this Resource Guide is to create one location where a longtime local or someone arriving for the first time, could find the support or services needed to access all the amazing opportunities that are provided for people of any age with any type of disability. Please take time to read about the many great agencies, services, nonprofits and businesses. Many generous and creative people have contributed to the ideas, events, services and products that create a more inclusive and accessible environment for people of all ages and abilities in the Lowcountry. Advocacy Pictured is teacher, Mrs. Annette Lee and Sidney Wilson, student and author of “It’s Cool to be Different”, which can be purchased on the Lulu.com website by searching for the bookstore using her name or title of the book. The year 2020 was dominated by many with fear and disappointments but my daughter, Sidney Wilson would say that it was her “best year ever!” Last year my husband and I were encouraged by Hilton Head High School Resource Teacher, Mrs. Annette Lee, to keep her on the high school diploma track. As many parents of children with disabilities, we questioned whether Sidney could keep up with her typical peers and feared that she would feel so stressed and anxious that it would cause her more harm than good. Mrs. Lee knew what Sidney was capable of and became her biggest advocate. To our surprise we also learned that Sidney had told her that she wanted to one day write a children’s book. Mrs. Lee encouraged Sidney to write a book as her ‘personal project’ requirement to graduate and with a little help from Google and Mom, Sidney wrote and self-published “It’s Cool to be Different”. It has received a lot of attention, including being interviewed by the local paper. Sidney’s adventures in 2020 didn’t stop there. Another amazing advocate and friend, Kathy Cramer, was asked by her neighbor if she knew of a teen with a disability who would be interested in a small part in a public safety infomercial. Sidney came to mind and as a result Sidney made her acting debut, blowing everyone away, including the ‘professional actors.’ They were impressed with her patience in waiting around for her turn to perform, her sense of humor, and her ability to follow directions on set. Our biggest takeaway from 2020, as Sidney’s parents, is the enormous impact these two advocates have had on Sidney and in our lives. They saw ‘ability’ where even we, her parents, still saw ‘disability.’ They inspired us to allow Sidney to grow and to not set limits on what she can do and be. Thank you to all the advocates out there! You truly make a difference!

• Accessible Living Found in Bluffton • When Louisa Coughlan decided she wanted to live in a place where accessing basic things like shopping, dining and hanging out with friends would be easier than she had it in urban Seattle, she never dreamed she’d find such a welcoming, accessible and vibrant community as she now has in Bluffton, South Carolina. Louisa, who has used a wheelchair since her late teens as a result of an auto accident, was accustomed to being creative when entering buildings in her hometown of Seattle, Washington. But she grew tired of being frustrated, disappointed and embarrassed when she wanted to enter a business or office space, or even the home of a friend. “There were times when I’d have to go to the loading dock where they had a freight lift and be lifted instead of entering the front door like everyone else. Or if I wanted to go to a friend’s house I pretty much knew it was out of the question since most homes had 20 or more steps to the front door,” she said as she recalled her life in the Northwest. So in 2016 she and her partner, Ed Kelly, started to search for living alternatives and at first focused on areas outside of the city. “But then we thought, well if we are going to move, why not look beyond Washington?” Both Louisa and Ed had careers which allowed them to work from anywhere, so location was not a limiting factor in their search. Internet searches for ‘accessible housing’ brought her to national builder sites like Pulte and K Hovnanian, which piqued initial interest for homes located in the Southeast. She was immediately drawn to their functional, yet beautiful designs, which featured open concept living, a first floor owner’s suite, wide halls and bathrooms - all offered as standard design. “I realized I didn’t have to live in a home with a handicap ramp just because I use a wheelchair,” she said. “I loved that I could have a beautiful home that worked for me and could also visit friends in their homes.” During a househunting trip to the Southeast, hotel accommodations in Charleston fell through and they found themselves arriving instead on Hilton Head Island at 1 a.m.
“When we entered Beaufort County, you could just sense the peace and calm as you drove in,” she said. LIttle did they know that this scheduling snafu would lead them to their new community. As it has turned out, the couple chose the Hampton Lake Community and relocated in mid-2017. In addition to being able to fully access all the amenities that Hampton Lake offers, Louisa is able to enjoy much of what Beaufort County offers. She noted that much of Hilton Head Island has been constructed after 1990 and most new construction in Bluffton has occurred in the last ten years, making the majority of the commercial spaces built in compliance with ADA accessibility codes and for obvious reasons very accessible and attractive to people who use wheelchairs. “Things like curb cuts, wide and smoothly paved sidewalks, wider parking lot spaces next to handicap accessible parking spaces to load and unload wheelchairs are paramount to someone who uses a wheelchair,” said Louisa, who drives her own vehicle using hand controls. “Most people don’t have to think about these things, but I do,” she said, adding that restaurants like the SERG group, to even the small boutiques in the area are accessible and welcoming to people who use wheelchairs. She noted that sIngle-use bathrooms are a big improvement for people who use wheelchairs. “It levels the playing field for each of us by making it one room and each person takes their turn when it’s their turn. Not when one stall designed for handicap only is available.” Louisa is also grateful to also have access to beaches, nature trails, festivals and many of the recreational activities which are so popular in the Lowcountry, like boating and fishing. “We love the new Wright Family Park and new boat docks in Old Town Bluffton,” she said. In addition to having access to the natural, cultural and social amenities in our community, Louisa is also so thankful and happily surprised at how inclusive, welcoming and friendly people in her Hampton Lake and the Bluffton community are in general. “It’s been a great choice for us and we’re very happy to be a part of this community.”

First Tee – The Lowcountry is a Youth Development Organization that aims to teach children ages 7-17 about our Nine Core Values, Healthy Habits, and Life Skills. Our Nine Core Values will include Respect, Courtesy, Honesty, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, Judgment, Integrity, Confidence, and Perseverance. Our classes are held seasonally at numerous locations throughout Beaufort and Jasper Counties where we partner with golf courses to host weekly classes up to 20 kids. These classes typically are an hour long and are held on the same day per week for either an 8 or 6 week session pending the season. In these classes children will participate in two activates per week based on the 4 golf fundamentals (putting, chipping, pitching, and full swing) where a game is played and focused on a golf skill and a Core Value the can relate to the activity. We also do warm-ups which include flexibility, object control, strength, agility, and balance. As kids progress through the classes, they should have a clear understanding of the exhibited behaviors associated with each of the Core Values and how to use them not only during class time but also on the golf course, with friends, with family, in school, and other areas of their lives. They will also have a clear understanding of the basics of golf including the four golf fundamentals, basic rules of the game, and basic terminology of the golf course. Collaboration, the Key for Families of Children with Autism The prevalence of autism has increased significantly over the past decades due to a variety of factors, including a better understanding of the wide spectrum of autism and more precise diagnostic practices. The Centers for Disease Control now reports that 1 in 59 children in the United States are on the autism spectrum (United States Centers for Disease Control, 2018). Receiving an autism diagnosis for your child can raise a myriad of concerns and worries, while also providing a clearer path forward to understanding your child and creating an action plan to improve their overall quality of life. This can lead to some mixed and overwhelming emotions for families. Your loved one with autism may experience communication delays, difficulty navigating social situations, problems adjusting to change or transitions throughout the day, learning differences, motor issues and sensory problems. This can be challenging to many children and families - and that is ok. There is help and support available. Understanding the best interventions and the wide range of support available can help families begin to build a much-needed support network and a bright future for their child. It is important to know that collaboration is key when crafting the best team to support your child and your family. Your child may begin ABA therapy. ABA therapy refers to using Applied Behavior Analysis to identify behavioral needs related to academics, daily living and social-emotional skills, and creating data-based programming individualized for your child to teach skills in a systematic way. ABA represents the autism intervention with the largest body of research supporting its positive effect on child outcomes. Your child may receive special education services through the school district, to possibly include Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT) and ABA therapy. You may also be referred to private Speech, OT or PT through your doctor. Your child’s service providers, teachers and school-based staff represent your greatest allies in helping your child. It is a huge asset to involve all team members in planning for your child’s education and intervention regiment. You can ask to sign a release with your child’s school and his or her outside providers giving permission for them to exchange information and collaborate. Consistency and predictability are very important for your loved one with autism. The educational and private sector teams can work with you to ensure that all team members are working to mirror each other providing a consistent intervention experience for your child at school, home, and outside therapies. A Parent’s Words of Wisdom Raising Children with Disabilities The way my life has changed, as mother of two children on opposite ends of the autism spectrum, is immeasurable. When my boys were first diagnosed, I had no idea what to expect. Years later, on most days I still don’t, but my boys have become my greatest teachers.
Here is what I’ve come to learn:

ISSUES AND THEIR IMPACT ON OUR YOUTH Mental health is the global wellness of how you think and feel, control your emotions, and act. As stated by the Mayo Clinic, “Mental health disorders in children are generally defined as delays or disruptions in developing age-appropriate thinking, behaviors, social skills or regulation of emotions” (https://www.mayoclinic. org/healthy-lifestyle/childrens-health/in-depth/mental-illness-in-children/art-20046577). These problems are troubling to youth and interrupt their capacity to perform well at home, in school, or in social settings. Thus, it is important for parents, teachers, and other caregivers to be aware of the signs of mental health disorders and understand options to seek help.
If you become concerned about your child, talk to your child’s teachers and other caregivers and share this information with your child’s doctor. Your child’s doctor will want to know the signs and symptoms as well as the impact on your child’s day-to-day functioning, and he/she may refer you to a mental health professional for further evaluation. Depending on the rendered diagnosis, treatment options include therapy/counseling and/or medication (for most conditions, both work best together). Additionally, family therapy, parent training, and positive time spent together may also be beneficial. Early intervention and treatment have shown the best results to improve functioning and reduce the impact of the condition(s) long-term.
Some common mental health conditions in children include (but are not limited to): Anxiety disorders, Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Eating disoders, Depression and other mood disorders, and PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some warning signs to look for include: persistent sadness for two or more weeks, withdrawing from or avoiding social interactions, hurting oneself or talking about hurting oneself, death or suicide, outbursts or extreme irritability, out-of-control behavior, extreme changes in mood, behavior or personality, changes in eating habits and/or loss of weight, difficulty sleeping, frequent headaches or stomachaches, difficulty concentrating, changes in academic performance, and avoiding school.

Does your child struggle in school? Are you new to Beaufort County and need information about services for children with disabilities? Don’t know where to begin? Start here. The Beaufort County School District (BCSD) Department of Special Education is available to provide you with the information you need about our continuum of services and programs for students with disabilities. We value parent participation, integrate parent-provided physician and/or agency reports in our process and collaborate with numerous agencies such as the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs and Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. We are proud partners with Special Olympics. We pride ourselves on our collaborative team approach on behalf of all our students with disabilities. A summary of our services is provided below. You will find more information on our website. BabyNet - If you are currently receiving services from BabyNet, and your child meets criteria for special education, BCSD will facilitate the transition to school services by their third birthday. Evaluations - No matter what your child’s grade level, if they are struggling in school, BCSD can intervene using our strategic Multi-Tiered System of Supports. After implementing these supports, and based on the student’s rate of progress, a referral for a comprehensive evaluation may be made if a disability is suspected. If the parent gives consent, evaluations will be completed within 60 days. The team, including the parent, will then meet to discuss the results and determine if the student is eligible under one of the categories of disabilities under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (autism; deaf-blindness; deafness; emotional disturbance; hearing impairment; intellec-

tual disability; multiple disabilities; orthopedic impairment; other health impairment; specific learning disability; speech or language impairment; traumatic brain injury; or visual impairment/blindness). Individualized Education Program (IEP) An IEP, is developed by a team, inclusive of the parent, and identifies special education services specific to the student’s needs. These services are provided in the least restrictive environment, which means students with a disability should spend as much time as possible with peers who do not receive special education. Homeschool/Private School - We welcome parents to meet with us and express their concerns. Our team can identify strategies that can be implemented or if an evaluation is warranted. If the student qualifies for special education services following an evaluation by the District, an Individual Service Plan will be developed. Section 504 vs IEP - Determination of what is appropriate for each child is based on the nature of the disability and what that child needs in order to have an equal opportunity to compete when compared to non-disabled peers. Transition Services - BCSD provides transition services for high school students with disabilities to support and promote positive post-secondary outcomes. Students may gain experience working under staff supervision in one of our high school-based enterprises such as a coffee shop or school stores or via on-the-job training opportunities with one of our community-based business partners in the hotel, restaurant or retail industries or by attending vocational rehabilitation.

DSN provides a continuum of care that meets the individual’s assessed needs in a safe, caring and healthy home environment, to help them live as independently as possible in the community. This includes: supported independent living; living with a care giver or family member; or in one of DSN’s eleven supervised houses located in various residential communities through-

out Beaufort County. Residents are supported by staff in a wide range of personal activities of daily living such as cooking, cleaning, doing their own laundry, as well as educational, social and community activities. Some consumers may participate in supported employment throughout the county at various work sites.
THE ADULT DAY PROGRAM/SUPPORT CENTER Many of our consumers participate in the Day Program, which is designed to help them to be as independent as possible, gain skills for possible employment and to expand their life experiences. Participants work on their individual goals as well as participate in arts and crafts, work in groups and independently, and are involved in community experiences. DSN maintains a fleet of vehicles to transport consumers to the adult Day Program, medical appointments and other activities. In addition, we transport consumers to work locations north and south of the Broad River. Many of our vehicles are ADA compliant and some have wheelchair ramps and accessibility. Our staff are well-trained in safely operating vehicles and the equipment onboard as well as trained to properly assist consumers as required.

Bluffton Native Authors a Book About Her Disability Danielle Tennison is a mom, daughter, sister, disability advocate and friend to many (and former student of mine) but she is now also an author. Danielle fulfilled a long-time goal of writing a book about living with her disability, Spina Bifida. Her book “Know You Are Special” is written in simple language geared for children, sharing the challenges but also how she was in a positive inclusionary setting with lots of friends growing up. Danielle’s determination and independent nature were stronger than the challenges that her disability presented. When I asked what prompted her to write it now at the age of 37 (doesn’t she look wonderful), she replied that she needed to work through the process of acceptance of her disability first. We are all living in a ‘process’; may yours be as enlightening as Danielle’s. Awareness, Acceptance, Healing and Growth Found Through The Arts
Our Heart Speaks (https://ourheartspeaks. org/) is an amazing and inspiring online resource for individuals living with newly acquired disabilities and chronic medical conditions. It provides an opportunity for people globally who have been successful in finding meaning and purpose to share their voices in their journey of rehabilitation and healing through the power of the story. Welcoming the full range of art forms which includes the visual arts, photography, music, video, poetry and dance, this work challenges the current paradigm. We need not be defined by a disability or medical diagnosis. The human spirit is so much more. Recently, I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Keith Rafal, the President and Founder of Our Heart Speaks. As a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation who embraces a more holistic approach, he shared that over the years he observed in certain settings, patients with a newly acquired disability in a rehabilitation center would hang pictures of themselves prior to their accident or medical condition such as a stroke. The pictures would depict their former ‘active’ selves. What he has recognized with his patients was the need to not only regain lost functions or learn compensatory strategies when function is permanently lost or slow to return which is critical in a rehab program, but also to focus on nurturing new abilities and awareness that may arise. This third way is less concerned with what has been lost but what potentially can be gained. Dr. Rafal’s work and beliefs led him to create a space where individuals can “… use arts to tell their story … an international on-line platform where one can find meaning” (https://ourheartspeaks.org/category/new-abilities-initiative/). Everyone’s goal should be to live a full and meaningful life. Our Heart Speaks provides the opportunity for contributors with acquired disabilities and chronic medical conditions to heal and return to that goal. It also offers all of us the opportunity to bear witness and embrace the power of the human spirit. Rita Jaklitsch, Ed. S. Rita Jaklitsch learned of Dr. Rafal’s work through their mutual high school’s alumni newsletter. She knew immediately that this was a ‘must share’ as a valuable resource. 44

Public Tennis Inc. (PTI) ~ A Prime Community Organization

Beaufort County has many wonderful supportive agencies on behalf of individuals with disabilities, but one that has the potential to address one’s physical, social and emotional status is Public Tennis Inc. (PTI). Their website describes them best: “We are committed to making tennis accessible, to growing tennis as a sport, to supporting those who use tennis as an opportunity for collegiate and professional pursuits, and to bringing the therapeutic, athletic, and social benefits of tennis to those with special needs.” PTI provides tennis programs across Beaufort County to include youth clinics, USTA Junior Team Tennis, Adult Team Tennis, Special Olympics Clinics, Volunteer Coach Training Programs and USTA Tennis Apprentice for beginner adults. This school year, in light of the pandemic and suspension of Special Olympics, PTI reached out to the community and was able to gather over 200 tennis racquets to donate to Beaufort County School District middle and high school Special Olympic athletes for their own personal use. The premise was to encourage students to continue remaining active and enjoy the sport. The students were very appreciative! The wonderful thing about tennis is that it is all inclusive.
