Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip. Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.

Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.

Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. <M Maari rily lyyn befo beefo foree, aagge 6 fore 68 8 See Se ee my sto t ryy at Exxce E xce cep pttio i na nalD Den e tiist stry ryy.ccom om

Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place. According to history.com, the ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year—though for them the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted. During a massive 12-day religious festival known as Akitu, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. These promises could be considered the forerunners of our New Year’s resolutions. If the Babylonians kept to their word, their (pagan) gods would bestow favor on them for the coming year. If not, they would fall out of the gods’ favor—a place no one wanted to be. January 2019

HAND CRAFTED

Ceramics for Seniors Start Out the New Year with a New Hobby Story and Photography by Julia Mitchem

F

ound deep inside the cozy Westside Recreation Center, the Senior Ceramics class teaches seniors how to fire and paint various types of ceramics. Seniors can immerse themselves in a therapeutic and relaxing outlet, while creating something new. The class offers an adult setting for seniors to socialize and work at their own pace. The class is instructed by Mavis Ratliff and is open to the public. The class and firing your pottery in the kiln are completely free, the only costs are that each person should provide their own paint, brushes and greenware. The class meets Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Arts & Crafts room. The class meets year-round, besides its threemonth break in June, July and August. Ratliff has been working as the ceramics teacher for approximately 25 years. Before working at Westside, she had her own ceramics shop in Ohio for about five years. She started her shop after visiting her aunt in Cincinnati. Ratliff always asked her aunt to make her ceramics, and her aunt eventually suggested that she start her own shop. So, she did. Ratliff decided to move down to Florida in 1989 and began working at Westside a few years later. She was reluctant to start working in ceramics again, but eventually with the urging of her family, she decided to give it a try. According to Ratliff, Senior ceramics is a great social setting. “I was feeling really down this week, but I am already feeling better now,” Ratliff said. “Pottery is relaxing. I lost my husband, my little dog and don’t hear much from my children, so it’s helped me heal.”

8

January 2019

Everyone is welcome to the class, Ratliff just emphasizes that it’s not okay to make pottery at the center and then try to sell it. The pottery is supposed to be for personal use, or to give to others as gifts. She recommends that anyone wishing to join the class pick up brushes from Michael’s Craft Store and their greenware and paint from Juanita Frazier at Frazier Ceramic Shop. “My friend Mae Chisholm brings me something every day she comes to class, all of us have become really good friends,” Ratliff said. Luella Johnson is a regular attendee of Senior Ceramics. Johnson is currently working on painting a ceramic fish. She greets every newcomer with a big hug. Johnson explained how therapeutic creating pottery and the class is. “This class makes me feel better and keeps me motivated,” she said. “I feel better than when I have physical therapy.” Shirley Butler started coming to Senior Ceramics when she retired in 2008. Butler used to pick up her mother Johanna Jackson, who is now 104 years old, from the class. Jackson was also taught by Ratliff and loved the class. Butler has been coming to the class for at least ten years. “I think socializing with these ladies and seeing the finished products have been the most rewarding parts,” Butler said. Senior Ceramics can provide a fun outlet for those looking to pick up a new hobby, and the group is always welcome to new members of any skill level. In addition, it offers a great social support system and place to develop one’s creativity. The class is excited for any new arrivals who wish to grow and become part of their community. s seniortimesmagazine.com

Health Benefits of Ceramics There are always physical and mental benefits from creating something. According to Samir Becic, author of ReSYNC Your Life, there are over ten health benefits of pottery. Becic claims that creating pottery can increase your optimistic outlook, reduce stress, exercise the hands, wrists and arms, encourage sociability and act as a natural pain killer. On a whole, pottery can greatly improve one’s quality of life. Art allows for self-expression and connects the body and mind. Learning new skills and channeling focus and creativity results in a multitude of lifelong benefits

Ceramics in History According to the American Ceramic Society, ceramics date back thousands of years and is considered as one of the oldest industries. The first known ceramic artifact is dated all the way back to 28,000 BCE. This ceramic is a statuette of a woman, the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, and came from a small prehistoric settlement near Brno, in the Czech Republic. The use of ceramics increased significantly during the Neolithic period when communities focused on agriculture and farming. In about 9,000 BCE clay-based ceramics started to become popular containers to hold food or water and even became objects of art. The popularity of ceramics spread from Asia to the Middle East and Europe. Unlike today’s pottery, ancient pottery was fired and dried either from kilns dug in the ground or purely by sunlight. One of the biggest breakthroughs in the creation of ceramics was the invention of the wheel in 3,500 BCE. This invention allowed ceramic artifacts to be created with radial symmetry. Ceramics became genuine works of art because they were increasingly used for elaborate paintings. Following World War II, ceramics and glass have been incredibly influential in many advanced technological realms such as the electronic, medical, energy, aerospace and automotive fields. Presently, ceramics are contributing to a new field called nanotechnology. These new developments can be expected to drive the international ceramic and glass industry to become a nearly $1.1 trillion market in 2023, which is significantly higher than the estimated $800 billion in 2018. Ceramics have greatly evolved over the years from something purely functional to beautiful pieces of art and irreplaceable advancements in modern technology. STAYIN’ ALIVE

What’s Age Got to Do with It? Kenneth Burke Stays on a Path of Adventure and Good Health in Later Years

by Stephanie Richards

Y

ou could say Kenneth Burke’s passion for adventure started at age nine with an umbrella and a tree. He was living in California at the time and wanted to jump and fly — so he climbed a tree, opened the umbrella and gave it a whirl. His experiment ended with a bruised ankle, but it didn’t stop him from trying again. He climbed a barn for his next attempt. He took an oblong square piece of plastic, folded it in half, and grabbed the corners, floating to the ground 30 feet below. He was successful, although the wind pushed him into the barn and he ended up with splinters. That second try gave him confidence to pursue an even greater height, this time a 100-foot cliff. “As I looked up and down, I decided to walk away,” said 63-year-old Burke, a retired Green Beret. “I just really wanted to fly.” Born in Oregon, Burke and his family traveled through 38 states before he left home at the age of 16. “I come from a very large family with nine sisters and five brothers. We were poor and traveled around a lot. For a time, we lived in Kentucky in a log house with an outhouse. I have no regrets about my upbringing because it made me who I am today,” said Burke, who has taken to the open road in his 29-foot fifth wheel trailer.

12

January 2019

At 23-years-old, he enlisted in the Army National Guard, starting out in infantry and later became a Green Beret. He eventually went active duty and worked at the Pentagon. It fed his sense of adventure, taking him to places like Tunisia. It also gave him opportunities to really fly as he completed airborne school in Fort Benning, after which he jumped out of a plane more than 75 times. He went on to complete the Jumpmaster Course and earned the title of Jumpmaster, an achievement only 56 out of 200 in his class would qualify for. “It was stressful. You had to make sure everyone was rigged right, constantly checking the altitude and wind direction, and other factors to make sure they would land in the drop zone. The first jump I oversaw had top brass jumping out of a helicopter,” said Burke, who is registered at the Gainesville Veteran’s Administration and comes to visit his son’s family in Newberry. The rigid physical training required to become a Green Beret was not the only challenging thing he had to face. “I had a fourth-grade education and had to go to school to get my GED,” he said. “I knew others (soldiers) had an advantage over me in terms of academics, but I wanted it so bad I worked twice as hard at everything and wouldn’t give up.” seniortimesmagazine.com

14

Burke’s passion for adventure has no fear, including free fall skydiving. He said life should be lived to the fullest.

At 40 years old, he was in great physical shape and an instructor for Officer Candidate School. However, he suffered a heart attack (cause undetermined). It led him to retire 10 years later. He decided to pursue a career driving semitrucks, something he did for two and a half years until coming to the conclusion that it wasn’t for him. During his time on the road he looked for opportunities to stay fit. “I was always looking for what I could workout with. For example, I would do asymmetrical exercises for the upper body with the steering wheel,” he said. “Most truck drivers are not in good shape. I knew I couldn’t be 20, 30 or 40 years old anymore, but my idea back then, as it is still today, is to be in better shape than most people my age.” Still young and able to work, he decided to pursue his passion for public service and became a deputy sheriff for three years in Kentucky and then a federal police officer for the Veteran’s Administration there. Then, he decided to officially retire altogether.

14

January 2019

Trying New Things and Facing Fears His sense of adventure has carried over into his personal life too. Burke’s son, Matthew, calls him an adventure junkie as he has done paragliding, hang gliding, biking, hiking, fishing, spearfishing, jet skiing and free fall skydiving. He also holds a private pilot’s license and had a Harley-Davidson for a period of time. “I had a scooter as a kid, so I’ve been riding motorbikes all my life,” he said. “I loved the freedom of riding a motorcycle… the freedom of an open road.” A cowboy hat has also been part of his wardrobe as Burke has a love for riding and training horses. Growing up, he had Shetland ponies but doesn’t recommend them because of their mean demeanor. He trained horses for a while after retiring from the military when he was living in Kentucky. “I began with a thoroughbred and then trained quarter horses too. You use common sense in your love for horses. I had one that was mean and initially tried to hurt me too; I eventually had him riding.” Burke said living life boldly means facing fears and having a willingness to try. “My mentality has always been if I’ve never seniortimesmagazine.com

tried it, I want too. I think it keeps my spirit young,” he said. “I think you have to take your fears head on. For me, I was four years old and almost drowned so I had a fear of deep, dark water. I decided to get certified to scuba dive and hit that fear head on; I even dove at night into murky water. Now, I really enjoy underwater scuba diving, especially at area springs.” His sense of adventure has not gone without injuries. He has arthritis and his knees are damaged from jumping. He also had surgery to address shoulder tendon problems. In addition, he had his right ear damaged while in special forces training due to an explosion from an artillery simulator. “Sitting here talking, I can do lots of things. However, when I stand up it is another story,” Burke said with a laugh. “I’ve gone from jumping off roofs and then out of airplanes to not being able to jump off a step because of my knees. It really sucks. But you learn to understand your limitations and work around them. I ride a bicycle now instead of running because I have bad knees. I use machines over lifting heavy free weights. I still get in shape quick but lose it if I don’t keep it up.”

Fact & Fiction: Dispelling Home Healthcare Misconceptions There are often many questions that arise from healthcare professionals and patients alike about who qualifies for home health services. During this holiday season, let home healthcare help you to stay Home for the Holidays!

Ken Burke, second from right in cowboy hat, recently led teams of volunteers for 10 CAN to help with Hurricane Michael damage in and around Panama City.

Fiction:

Eating Healthy and Staying Active He recently led a three-day Suwannee River Retreat for military kids as part of 10 CAN’s outdoor adventure program. Most recently, he managed a three-week humanitarian aid mission for 10 CAN to help Hurricane Michael victims near Panama City. “There were different volunteers each week and we ended up helping people in mobile homes that were forgotten. The team cleared one road so people could get back in their houses and get power restored,” he said. “People really appreciated it and it was the first time in awhile I was able to help people again.” In addition to some physical ailments, Burke has also struggled with depression. “I bought a cabin in Kentucky and secluded myself for a while. It was a sanctuary for me,” he said. “I worked on the land, took walks through the woods and talked to God. I didn’t want to take medication and handled it this way. It worked.” Five years ago, he also made eating healthy a priority. “I stopped drinking sodas and went to eating organic. I figured it out and $100 in groceries only cost an extra $20 to eat organically. I start my morning off with a protein shake and oatmeal… everything in the

shake is organic. I love to cook too, whether it is spaghetti and stew or organic brownies. I don’t eat out often because I know it isn’t healthy.” Burke said retirement was one of the hardest things he has ever done, and society has the wrong mindset about it. “I’m not old, I’m just older. There are things that I did in the past, but I don’t say ‘I used to.’ I am a Green Beret. I still run now, it is just on a bike,” he said. “It is hard to figure out what life looks like after retirement; too many people can’t figure it out. Sometimes you are hurting and can’t move, and you can become a couch potato. I think you have to set small goals every day and build to larger ones moving forward. That’s what keeps you motivated. My advice is that if trying to do something is going to cause pain and hurt you, then don’t do it. Otherwise keep going.” The ultimate goal is a life without regrets that is experienced to the fullest potential, Burke said. “I have this vision of being 90 years old in a rocking chair, sitting next to a guy the same age. He talks about all the things he wishes he would have done. Then, I tell him everything I have done. I don’t want regrets.” s

Home Health is only for seniors who are very ill or recovering from serious operations.

Fact:

Home Health is for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions that may require skilled teaching and assessments, wound care, pain management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, postoperative care and rehabilitation.

Fiction:

Patients cannot receive Home Health services unless they have been in the hospital.

Fact: A hospital stay is NOT required prior to ordering home health. A patient is eligible for Home Health services when a new diagnosis or change in condition occurs, or if the patient or caregiver is having difficulty managing the patient’s disease process.

MOTHER HEN IS PROUD TO BE A “BABY BOOMER” RAISED ON A FARM POPULATED BY DOGS, CATS, CHICKENS, DUCKS, GEESE, HORSES AND COWS. THE WISDOM SHE GAINED WHILE GROWING UP IN THE COUNTRY CAN’T BE FOUND IN BOOKS. YOU CAN CONTACT MOTHER HEN AT motherhenfarmtales@gmail.com.

A Bold Move – Leaving the Farm

M

y life growing up in the country was almost Utopia. I loved everything about it. My parents, my pets, my childhood playmates and the sheltered life I enjoyed provided a comfortable garden for my roots to grow. But somehow, I always felt there was “more” out there to experience. Throughout high school I was encouraged by my teachers and a guidance counselor to pursue a college education. My class ranking was very high and I was told I could have been accepted at one of our state universities. However, I didn’t know what I would choose for a career, because in those days girls generally went to college to become nurses, teachers, or to get their “MRS” degree. Although I respected those careers, I couldn’t see myself happy pursuing that path. The only career I could see myself in was art. Drawing and painting always called to me, but at that time there was not really a demand for graduates with an art degree. I knew how hard my father worked out in the fields every year to earn our family’s annual income. I couldn’t see using a big portion of that income towards my education unless I was sure of putting it to good use. Therefore, I focused on secretarial positions. During high school I took typing, office practice and shorthand. After graduation I found a position for a lawyer in our nearby town and I became his personal secretary. The salary wasn’t very much, but I lived at home with my

20

parents so it wasn’t bad for my first job. My mother said that it at least paid for my pantyhose, and she wasn’t really exaggerating. I didn’t realize how alone and lonely I would feel staying behind while my classmates all left for school or employment y in other cities. After a year I decided to strike out and do something about it. I decided that I could be a secretary anywhere, so why not go to a university and apply for a job there? I made plans with my closest friend who had just left a job she took in Washington D.C. after graduation. We decided to apply for positions at a university about 50 miles away. I took the secretarial exams which included a typing test for word-per-minute count and waited to hear back. When I received word that I had passed, everything seemed set! Except—at the last minute my friend changed her mind and said she wanted to stay in our little hometown. (I think there may have been a boy involved.) What was I to do? Keep in mind this was 1969. Young ladies from small towns in the country didn’t move off on their own to a college town, unless they were enrolled in school and living in a dorm. But I came so close to stretching my wings that I could almost see myself flying. So I did it. I made my bold move. I started with “baby steps” and rented a room in an elderly lady’s home. Soon after that I made friends and moved to a rooming house with three other girls. During the first year I seniortimesmagazine.com

leased a studio apartment with a girl who worked in the same office as me. We later upgraded to a full size apartment. What an exciting time of growth. I made so many memories and lasting friendships. It was the turbulent 60’s, but I thankfully managed to steer clear of unwise decision-making. After over two years of stretching my wings, I got the wanderlust again. I didn’t know what I was looking for, but something was missing. By this time I knew that whatever I needed, I wasn’t going to find it in that college town. I returned home to the comfort of my family, rather disappointed but hopeful that I would find my destiny somehow. By this time I was nearly 21 and, ridiculous as it seems now, I felt as though I had let life pass me by. Most of my friends were married. Some had already started their families. I was back at the starting gate, not sure where life would lead me. Not long after coming back to my hometown, I happened to run into a young man who had gone to the same high school as me and was home on college break. He was two years older, and although we never dated back in school, we were good friends. It turns out that this was the person I was meant to be with, and after dating for two years we made the decision to get married. My mother was so happy because after those years I spent away from the farm, I ended up back home and marrying the “boy-next-door.” She was sure

her only “chick” would live nearby and she could watch her future grandchildren grow. Life had a different plan for us, however. After just a few months of marriage, my new husband got a job offer in the South. It was too good an opportunity to pass up, and once again I found myself making a bold move to leave the farmland community I grew up in. Before I knew it, my husband and I were headed out on the highway with all our worldly possessions packed tightly in his Chevy Vega, even my favorite potted plant nestled between us. After tearfully saying our goodbyes to the parents we were leaving behind, we bravely drove away but couldn’t look at each other for several hours. Driving in silence we kept looking straight ahead, focusing on the future waiting for us out the Vega’s front windshield. We knew that if we saw the ache in each other’s eyes we would want to turn the car around. That day was one of the hardest I’ve ever experienced. It was probably also the most significant bold step I have ever taken towards the life I am living today. There is much more to my story, of course, but I will leave that for another Farm Tale. The takeaway from this today is that sometimes you have to follow your heart. Listen to your inner voice and take that bold step. It may not be easy, but the rewards can be great. Be brave. Stretch your wings—fly! s January 2019

TOASTMASTER

Ceremonial Speeches A Local Speechwriter Helps Coach Confidence Story and Photography by Summer Jarro

T

he idea of public speaking can be a nightmare for some. Standing in front of a group of people with multiple eyes staring back at you and the entire room dead silent you could hear a pin drop. Soon you begin sweating profusely as you try to force out the first word of your speech before those butterflies in your stomach completely consume you. But does it always have to feel this way? According to a 2014 Chapman University Survey of American Fears, public speaking was the greatest for Americans — beating out other fears such as heights, drowning and flying. While public speaking is an issue for many Americans, that isn’t the case for Michael Robinson, 70, who considers giving speeches his passion. “I have lost count as to how many speeches I have delivered,” Robinson said. Robinson, who started publicly speaking about 12 years ago, has given several speeches at different events, has multiple trophies for his public speaking work and is even a part of Toastmasters International, a communication and public speaking organization.

22

January 2019

Most people have anxiety or fear when they have to speak in public but feel comfortable when having a casual conversation. For Robinson, it is the opposite. When he speaks casually he stutters, which is something he’s dealt with for a long time. However, when he is publicly speaking it all goes away, he said.

“You will have butterflies in your stomach but what we are going to do is make those butterflies fly in perfect formation” Today he is the proprietor of Ceremonial Speeches, a speech writing and presentation consulting company in Gainesville where he helps individuals construct their presentations, Robinson said. He started the company in January 2014 after people began approaching him for suggestions on presentations or written products. “I realized that the more I spoke the more I enjoyed it, and along the way, I deseniortimesmagazine.com

veloped the skill to increase my enjoyment of public speaking,” Robinson said. “I came to a realization that there may be others in the same boat I am [in], or almost in the same boat, who could use some tips and some confidence and some additional skills to increase their public speaking.” At Ceremonial Speeches, Robinson helps clients by reviewing a speech already formed or writing a speech from scratch. He gathers information about the speaker, the type of speech, the audience and the venue. He includes practice time and rewrites with the client to overall prepare them to feel comfortable when they finally deliver their speech, he said. Robinson has helped with ceremonial speeches for weddings, graduations and receptions, along with assisting clients in oth-

er forms of communication such as writing important emails. For Robinson, a great ceremonial speech includes three things: an opening, a body and a conclusion. He explained that the opening should include recognition of the dignitaries present and be short. The body should contain relevant content to the occasion but also give a bit of extra information. “The audience expects you to say certain things in general, but if you give them more than what is expected — something extra — then that will endear the speaker to the audience,” he said. The conclusion should be short like the opening. It should restate what was previously mentioned and include a call to action, such as asking for everyone to congratulate the bride and groom in a wedding toast, Robinson explained. January 2019

24

ROBINSON’S TIPS FOR GIVING A MEMORABLE SPEECH: • Practice but don’t over practice. Read the speech once and then verbally go through it to yourself and aloud to someone else. • Dress appropriately. • Have confidence the audience wants you there. • Do research on the topic. “I have a saying, ‘know your topic as well as you know yourself,’” he said. • Drink plenty of liquids at room temperature. Don’t drink cold drinks because the coldness constricts the vocal cords. • Ask a few questions to keep the audience focused.

Giving a speech may not come as easy for Robinson’s clients as it does for him, so he helps them get the confidence they need to do well. “I give them positive thoughts and one of the things I might say is... ‘Well you were asked to deliver the speech. You can do it,’” Robinson said. He also tells the client that the audience could be anywhere else in that time, but they have chosen to come and hear what you have to say. “Other things that I tell my clients is that you will have butterflies in your stomach but what we are going to do is make those butterflies fly in perfect formation,” Robinson said. Since Ceremonial Speeches began, Robinson has helped over 100 clients like Wendy Palmer, who has always been nervous about the idea of public speaking. “I’ve tried to avoid it

my whole life,” Palmer said. Over the summer, Palmer, who is now an administrative assistant at Ceremonial Speeches, came to Robinson to help her learn to pray and bless meals in front of others at gatherings. “He is very professional and helpful,” she said. With his help, this past Thanksgiving Palmer gave her first blessing before dinner. It was a surprise to her family members, and it went well, she said. Robinson hopes that once clients get the help they need from him at Ceremonial Speeches, that they “will have a tremendous amount of confidence and he or she will know that I will be there for them,” he said. “However, I try to instill in them that they can do it with or without me.” s

A 2014 aerial photo of the King and Prince on the Atlantic. It still looks like this despite the hurricanes.

St. Simons Island, GA. Story and photography by Jeffrey R. Orenstein and Virginia Orenstein Despite being hammered by 2016 and 2017 hurricanes, St. Simons is doing just fine. Named for a Spanish monk, this gorgeous and historic island is located just off the coast of Georgia. It is the largest of a chain of Georgia barrier islands known as the Golden Isles. Other islands in the chain are Jekyll, Little St. Simons and Sea Island. Accessible by highway from the mainland, the St. Simons of today is a peaceful resort town with its streets sheltered by a mature canopy of moss-draped coastal live oaks and full of quaint shops and restaurants. Its earlier history, however, was far from peaceful. For at least two millennia, it was a native American fishing ground. In the 18th century it was the venue for the rival imperialisms of the new British colony of Georgia and the Spanish in Florida, based in St. Augustine. The area was known as the debatable land so Georgia’s founder, James Oglethorpe, established Fort Frederica in 1736 on St. Simons to control the shipping lanes. During the war of Jenkins Ear in 1742, Spanish and British forces clashed on the island. Fort Frederica’s troops defeated

the Spanish, ensuring Georgia’s future as a British colony. Today, the archeological remnants of Fort Frederica are protected by the National Park Service. Rangers conduct a fascinating tour there. The island was also home to nine slavery-era rice and cotton plantations and, in the 20th century, developed into a shrimping and tourist mecca. Over the years, it has attracted preachers John and Charles Wesley, U.S. Presidents, the G-8 international conference, the super-rich and a cohort of smart travelers seeking a relaxing getaway. The 21st century attractions of St. Simons include friendly people, a great waterfront hotel, scores of restaurants, a public pier, a historic lighthouse and museum, parks, golf courses and a shopping village. It also boasts extensive marshes, eight to ten-foot tides, an impressive tree canopy and fine beaches with almost universal public access. A zoning ordinance that permits no building taller than its surrounding tree canopy has kept the island free of high-rise hotels and condos, giving visitors the feel of returning to an earlier era of American leisure. The St. Simons lighthouse and museum are good places to seek the island’s rich history. The pier and the imposing bridge (top right) to the island can be seen from the top of the St. Simons lighthouse.

This 18th century cannon is at Fort Frederica. The bridge in the background was not part of the scene when the battle between the British and Spanish took place here in 1742.

There is no island public transportation system but there are taxis and trolley services conducting island tours. Renting a bike is great because rental places and bike paths are almost everywhere.

GETTING THERE

St. Simons is just offshore from Brunswick, Ga. Accessible by car off I-95 and U.S. 17, it is an hour’s drive north of Jacksonville, Florida. There is a large private jetport on the island and nearby Brunswick (BQK) Airport, a former Naval Air Station, and is served by Delta Airlines. Jacksonville (JAX) and Savannah (SAV) airports are both less than an hour and a half away and have extensive connections. The closest Amtrak stations are in Jacksonville (78 miles away) and Jessup, (48 miles away), offering Florida to New York service. The King And Prince hotel can arrange for airport and train station pick ups with advance notice.

SUNSTATE FEDERAL CREDIT UNION’S

Community Connection SunState Federal Credit Union has been serving our community for over 60 years. Since the beginning, we’ve always found ways to support some of the area’s most amazing charitable organizations. Check out our Facebook page for more information and get involved.

Charity of the Month & 10 for Teachers WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: SUNSTATE AND THE COMMUNITY SunState Federal Credit Union is part of your community and we want to invest in the local community with you. That’s why two of SunState’s programs that provide resources to local charities and teachers were designed to include your participation. Through our Charity of the Month program, you can nominate and vote for a local nonprofit that is making a difference in your community. Administered through our Facebook page, the program allows you to nominate a charity and then invites the general public to vote. Each month, the charity receiving the most votes receives a $1,000 donation and is profiled in Our Town Magazine. Another charity of a randomly selected voter receives a $500 donation. In addition, the person nominating the charity receives $300 and one random voter receives $100! The program has benefitted charities located in Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, or Levy Counties. “There are so many worthwhile organizations in the local area. The best way to find out about them is to ask our members and the local community. We provide the funding, but it is the community that nominates and decides which one will be the monthly award recipient,” said Robert Hart, SunState’s Vice

President of Marketing. “The Charity of the Month program is also a way to spread the word about the number of amazing nonprofits directly impacting our entire community for the better.” SunState’s 10forTeacher$ program provides another way to recognize educators who are making a difference in the lives of children in yourcommunity. Every time a member takes out a loan, SunState gives them a $10 certificate that can be given to a teacher or school. Vouchers can be redeemed for cash at the credit union. Together, the program is one way we can directly benefit teachers and schools making a difference in educating students. “We know teachers use some of their own resources to enhance learning experiences in their classrooms. The 10forTeacher$ program is a way to help out, even if just a little each time,” Hart said. “In addition to getting monetary contributions, teachers are also recognized directly by a student or thankful parent. It is a way to provide added recognition for their efforts while encouraging them at the same time.” Through the Charity of the Month and 10forTeacher$ programs, SunState has awarded over $130,000 to charities and educators impacting our communities now for the future. As a locally-based community credit union, SunState Federal Credit Union and its charitable foundation have always been dedicated to making donations to worthwhile causes in North Central Florida. The Charity of the Month and 10forTeacher$ programs are just a small example of SunState’s commitment to investing in the local community. We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

Adam has brought along his new girlfriend, an outrageous hairdresser, and they are both eager to impress. Gradually, family skeletons intrude on the happy domestic scene: Glyn’s unfaithfulness knows no bounds, the family transport business has been hit by the recession, and Laura has been unfaithful. From the authors of Dixie Swim Club comes a laugh-a-minute comedy about four Southern women, needing to escape their day-today routines, drawn together by fate—and an impromptu happy hour. Randa, perfectionist and workaholic; Dot, still reeling from her husband’s recent demise; earthy and boisterous Marlafaye, a good ol’ Texas gal; and new to town, Jinx, a spunky fireball, offers her services as a life coach for these women. Embracing Life Can An Old Brain Learn New Tricks?

C

an your cellular phone predict your destination? Mine does. It knows my routine. When I start my automobile, a message will appear on the screen indicating the estimated arrival time, based on my regular route. When I first noticed its eerie capability, I felt as though I was being stalked. After learning the phone’s software is programmed to record its owner’s driving habits and report current travel predictions, I relaxed. However, it still seems a bit creepy! Regular readers know it is impossible for me to take that (or any) information at face value. My mental makeup includes an overwhelming eccentric curiosity. I tend to over-analyze everything. This time, I had to understand if our minds function in a similar fashion as our cell phones. If so, how does our unappreciated (yet most vital organ) work? Habits, memories and thoughts are usually formed, stored and retrieved with almost as little effort as the function on our telephones. Even more fascinating, however, is each brain is unique. How we are “wired” is as different as our physical characteristics. Do we have the personal power to make positive cognitive modifications; similar to a phone upgrade? Scientists once believed that fully formed adult brains could not be changed. Their collective answer to my question would have been that a mental makeover is only possible in

science fiction movies or novels. Fortunately, new research has proven our brains are malleable, respond to our changing environments and continuously reorganize. For seniors, the best news is that malleability maintains throughout our lives. Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., Stanford University Psychologist recently authored, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.” Dweck defined a growth

formed, habits become encoded in brain structures and can never truly be eradicated – only replaced with stronger habits. That’s why they are so difficult to change. It’s not just a matter of willpower… it’s a matter of rewiring the brain.” Teaching any brain (especially an old one) new tricks, is hard. To succeed (at any age) requires preparation and mental readiness. The first vital step is to take a serious self-awareness inventory. Ask yourself pertinent questions. What time of day are you most productive? Are you a planner or prefer spontaneity? Do you enjoy abundance or simplicity? Next, select strategies to help strengthen your self-control. Abstinence, establishing accountability and/or written goals might be key tactics. 5K Every Day, #noexcuses, #neverquit! When a friend made that commitment on a Public Facebook post, I knew he was serious. The number of his

That is okay. mindset as, “… the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through effort.” She further explained, “Yes people differ greatly – in aptitude, talents, interests, or temperaments – but everyone can change and grow through application and experience.” Where do we begin? Our brains conserve energy, making good habits extremely powerful tools. Those recurrent behaviors (roughly 40% of our daily functions) influence our health, quality of life and are vital to success. Replacing negative habits should be the first hurdle to jump. Pulitzer-prize winning author, Charles Duhigg, wrote about this subject in his book, “The Power of Habit.” Duhigg said, “It can be regarded as a formula (or “habit loop”) that the brain automatically follows.” He further explained, “Studies indicate that once

supporters quickly grew. They followed his daily pictures, posts and progress. Every day was not equally successful. He evaluated and explained the stumbling blocks. Being accountable to his Facebook fans was a necessary safeguard. Restraining those old habits from resurfacing and rationalizing reasons to quit required a little help from his friends. It can take 65+ days to form new habits. Oftentimes failures require starting over. That is okay. It took time for me to appreciate the value of my modern mobile phone. Admittedly, today when I forget to bring it, I feel disconnected. More importantly, I now know my senior brain can continue to evolve and embrace what the future has in store. § Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. She hoped that national health-care would become a reality. She called for calm in times of trouble. She firmly favored birth control, and believed that the future would turn out alright.
