Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip. Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.
Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.
Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.
Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. <M Maari rily lyyn befo beefo foree, aagge 6 fore 68 8 See Se ee my sto t ryy at Exxce E xce cep pttio i na nalD Den e tiist stry ryy.ccom om
Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place. “Dr. J” was born just outside of NYC in 1950 and started playing basketball at a young age. After playing as one of the all-stars of his high school team, which is where he got his well-known nickname, he was recruited by the University of Massachusetts. In 1971, after playing two years with the university, he left to join the American Basketball Association (ABA). In 1974 he won his first ABA championship, then did it again in 1976. Erving then took his basketball career even further by joining the NBA and became a legendary player in the league. By 1983 he helped lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a world championship. He then retired from the game in 1987, with more than 800 games played and an average of 22 points per game. Today, Erving still remains invested in the sport and is a father of eight children. National Chocolate Lover’s Month They say that February is the month for love to be swirling in the air — love of chocolate — that is. “Chocoholics” can enjoy this month by treating themselves to sweets from local chocolatiers, bakeries and grocery stores. However, chocolate wasn’t always a sweet treat. It wasn’t until the Americas were discovered, and sugar and honey were added to the cocoa, that chocolate started gaining popularity. In fact, it took until 1847 to create the modern equivalent of a chocolate bar. Chocolate Lover’s Month is a newer creation that has been generating traction over the last few years. If you were looking for a reason to satisfy your sweet tooth, February has got you covered.

LASTING VOWS
In Sickness and Health Hudsons Say Love is a Beautiful Choice After 60 Years by Stephanie Richards
L
ove never fails. Ervin and Judy Hudson say living out those three words has sustained their marriage for more than 60 years. You could say the couple was predestined to meet at some point growing up in their native Tampa in the 1950s. Before they officially met, their paths may have crossed. The same doctor delivered them. In addition, Ervin had a paper route for the Tampa Tribune and Judy’s house was part of his delivery area. But it wasn’t until both were attending Brandon High School that the two had their first face-to-face encounter. Judy was getting a ride home after school from a friend. He asked if she minded if Ervin rode along too. “I thought Ervin was cute and very nice,” said Judy, who is now 79 years old. “I asked him for our first date. It was to a Future Homemakers of America Banquet where the girls invited their dates. We had to double with another couple as I was not allowed to date until I was 16 years old.” Four years later, the two tied the knot on October 17, 1958. Their wedding day was extra special with Ervin’s dad, who was a pastor, officiating the ceremony. They literally drove off into the sunset, spending a week-long honeymoon along the coastline from St. Augustine to Miami. Ervin said they returned to their first home in Tampa and jobs at General Telephone of Florida (now Verizon). The two were experiencing a beautiful beginning of their lives together as newlyweds with hopes and dreams for the future. About 12 days after returning from their honeymoon, Judy became sick. “I woke up with a fever and was sick with what

I thought was the flu. I ended up going to the hospital – I remember the day as it was the last time I walked. I became completely paralyzed,” she said. The diagnosis was polio and the doctors believe Judy contracted it somewhere on their honeymoon. “Judy was in the hospital for nine months right after we were married, coming home on the weekends after the first four months,” said Ervin, who is 81 years old. “I used to go see her every day after work. The toughest time for me was going home at night. I’d think about her being in the hospital all alone. I would think of our

I was afraid I was going to lose her and our home.” Back then, Ervin earned $1.21 an hour and the doctor bill alone was more than he made in a week. “God was so gracious to us through it. Before Judy got out of the hospital, the March of Dimes (before their shift to focus on birth defects) interviewed me to see if they could help. I met new friends who became very supportive. At that time, I also really put my trust in the Lord. Even though my dad was a pastor, I still needed to settle it for myself.” Judy is a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. She eventually gained some use of her arms and hands. “Ervin had it the hardest, I think. He would go to work, then come see me. Visiting hours were only until 8 p.m. but the nurses let him stay until 10. After all, we were newlyweds and wanted to be together,” she said.

The Gainesville residents have two children, Holli and Scott, and two grandsons. The first 15 years of their marriage Judy didn’t drive. She eventually did get her license and was able to drive a van with hand controls and a lift. Later, a power chair would increase her mobility to do things. “When I was finally able to get my license, I took the kids to Disney World. I didn’t tell anyone I was going,” she said. “We had a wonderful time together and the kids pushed me all over the park. Everyone was looking for me, but it was something I wanted to do on my own.” The couple have continued to enjoy life together, improvising on anything that might be a barrier. enjoying Gator games, their experiences have been plentiful. In fact, they were season ticket holders for over 50 years. “When we lived in Tampa, we would come up for games until we moved to Gainesville. This was our first year without tickets,” Judy said. “We didn’t go to school there, but we have always loved the Gators.” Ervin is also an avid hunter and said he appreciated Judy allowing him to go on trips without her and not feel guilty. “I have been able to go hunt and get away. She has always been gracious and never made me feel uncomfortable leaving,” he said. There was a time when Judy struggled with depression, but Ervin, as always, was right by her side. “It was when my children were a bit older. I started focusing on the things I couldn’t do for or with them. I was seeing only the negative in my life,” she said. “However, I got through it and learned to be moldable by God.” Through it all, Ervin said he learned the definition of true love. “Over the years, so many men have said to me, ‘I could have never stayed.’ While I can understand where that comes from, I wonder why they would think that way. Love is a choice. I don’t know how anyone could walk away from love,” Ervin said. “The inscription on
my wedding band from Judy is ‘Love is of God.’ Judy chose to love me, and God chose to love us. I understood that God chose me to take care of Judy. Some would say it is a labor of love. I don’t like the word ‘labor’ as it implies work. You do what you need to for those you love.” Seven years ago, Judy stopped driving as use of her arms and hands started to deteriorate. She also has experienced other physical problems the last few years. “With polio, you usually go back to your original paralysis as you lose seven percent motion each year,” she said. In the future, the two see a different set of challenges but reiterate that love never fails. “I see Judy losing part of what she got back in use of her hands and arms now. I know I need to step up and do more again,” said Ervin with tears of love and compassion. “I do worry about how my own [physical] strength will prevail to care for her.” Judy said the ingredients to a strong, lasting marriage are laughter, forgiveness and faith. “You have to have a sense of humor and laugh about things. You also have to say you’re sorry and forgive one another,” she said. “It’s hard to be mad at each other when you pray together. Knowing Christ has sustained us.” s

Both now in their nineties, their career paths merged in the ‘50s when the pair were hired by studios to dub the singing voices of actresses as so-called ‘ghost singers.’ Adams sang for Joan Crawford and Cyd Charisse in films such as “The Band Wagon,” “Torch Song,” and “Johnny Guitar,”

while it’s Warren’s voice heard for Ava Gardner in MGM’s musical “Show Boat” as well as Lucille Ball in several movies. “I was appearing at a club and someone from MGM asked me afterward if I’d be interested in dubbing,” recalled Ms. Adams from her Los Angeles home. “I did ‘The Band Wagon’ first, and one of the songs for Cyd Charisse, ‘Two-faced
Woman,’ was cut out but used for Joan Crawford in ‘Torch Song.’ It’s the only time in motion picture history that two different actresses have lip-synced to the very same track.” Ms. Warren broke into Hollywood after seeing a Los Angeles Times ad. “It turned out MGM was looking for a vocalist to dub Ava Gardner’s songs seniortimesmagazine.com

in ‘Show Boat,’” she recalled from her home in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. “That same night I was at a party and introduced myself to Marvin Saltzman who was an agent and the son-in-law of Arthur Freed who was producing the film.” Saltzman helped Warren secure an audition – in front of the entire cast. “That never happened when you went for most dubbing jobs,” Warren said. “But they were all there – Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, even Joe E. Brown and Agnes Moorehead. I sang ‘Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man’ and when I finished Kathryn Grayson – who was a fabulous singer – walked up to me and said, ‘My dear, we could all learn a lot from you!’ But Ava wasn’t happy because she wanted to sing in the movie. And to be honest, I couldn’t blame her because she had a fairly good voice herself.” Adams has vivid memories of singing for Crawford and Charisse. “I worked a lot more with Joan than I did with Cyd who was cold and reserved although part of it might have been that she was rather shy,” she said. “Joan was very friendly and would invite me back to her dressing room. She had a passable voice, but they really wanted someone to provide a more professional edge.” Despite the obvious vocal talents of both singers who spent many years working in other areas of the entertainment industry, they were dedicated to raising their families. “I never really promoted myself as much as I could have,” admitted Warren. “But I have never, ever felt any regrets about not becoming a better-known singer. I was the happiest woman in the world raising a family.” “I always wanted to become a really big star,” added Adams, “but don’t believe it would have allowed me to have the fulfilling family life that I had. I’m content to be a little star!” s

Lifetime of Love
W
hen we think of the word “love” we usually think of the romantic kind. The one all the songs are written about—celebrating the warm, fuzzy feeling of finding your person. Of course, many a sad ballad has also been written about losing that love, and the empty feeling you get when saying goodbye. It’s all good, though, if you allow yourself to feel love— and even to lose it. The emotions we feel help us to grow and shape us into the people we are meant to be. There are many different kinds of love and these feelings should be appreciated too. As a child growing up in the country, I started my journey in life with the love and devotion my parents provided. Then, as I grew into childhood, I learned about love through my pets. First, I had a sweet Scottish terrier named Bella who followed me everywhere I went. I was new to love and didn’t realize how much she meant to me until she was gone. Bella was the first to teach me how precious this emotion of love is—to treasure it while you have it, and not wait until it’s gone to celebrate it. As I grew, I continued to have many

special pets: dogs, cats, chickens, goslings and ducklings that I raised from babies… some of these leaving a permanent bittersweet scar on my heart with their passing. Each of them was so dear to me. I sometimes think God has given us pets to love and lose as practice for
when the time comes to lose a loved one such as a parent, grandparent or close friend. When I was around ten, I lost a young cat that I had raised from a kitten. He was my constant companion, sleeping on my bed each night and then spending the day by my side. When he was
just a year or two old, he contracted a fatal kidney disease and died in my arms. I remember going to the calendar and circling the date, saying to myself I would never ever be happy again after this day. I was inconsolable, and cried for over a week because I missed my furry little companion. I was so young to experience that kind of heartache, but I learned from it and eventually even recovered my ability to be happy. Still, when I think of my kitten, I feel a little ache deep in my heart. As I grew older and attended the country school just down the road from our house, I made some childhood friends. Most of them were just friends because we went to the same school, and they didn’t really “get” me. I was a little different since I was an only child (quite unusual not to have some siblings back then) and lived a quiet life tucked back in the woods. I think living in that environment may have hampered my people skills somewhat. Sometime during my first year of high school I met three wonderful girlfriends who would become my lifetime bffs. We were all quite different in personalities—but we all “got” each other and were there for each other during the craziness of high school. Once we graduated it was inevitable that marriage, children, careers and long distances came between us. We never lost touch, though, and kept the bonds of friendship alive even after more than 50 years passed. One of these dear girlfriends passed away much too early, however, leaving three young children to carry on her gentle spirit. We haven’t forgotten her, and never will. My other two bffs are seniortimesmagazine.com
still here, and we have lifted each other up through many a hard time—divorce, loss of loved ones, illness and more. Of course, we have celebrated each other’s happy times, too, and shared in their joy. No one knows you quite like someone you have grown up with—an unspoken understanding of who you are develops from a relationship that has spanned the decades. I have to say that the emotion I have for these three wonderful women is more than just friendship. It’s a very real love. I have been blessed with new friends throughout the years, as well. These ladies have enriched my life greatly, and I have
grown through their example and kind hearts. It is definitely a sisterhood that I have been given; and to a person growing up without siblings, I cherish these friendships more than I can say. Of course, romantic love and love for my family also has a huge place in my heart. I have been blessed with both. Granted, nothing has the potential to hurt as deeply as this kind of love. But if you are afraid to open your heart for fear of being hurt, my advice to you is to go ahead and take the leap. You will never know the exquisite joy that a lifetime of love can bring unless you listen to your heart. Your heart will know. s

Everlasting Love The Serena Love Story Continues to Live On
by Julia Mitchem
I
t all began with a boy who played baseball and a girl who loved to sing in the Southside of Chicago. Their names were Laura and Howard Serena, and they continue to be an example of how true love can live on even after death. Laura and Howard got married around the age of 18. Howard went off to World War II in the ‘40s when Laura was pregnant and didn’t get to see his first-born daughter until almost three years later. While Howard was off at war, Laura sang Rosemary Clooney’s “You’ll Never Know How Much I Love You,” which quickly became their love song, and would later help each other hold on as long as they could at the end of their lives. JoAnn Solari is one the couple’s daughters and took care of them in their last three years of life. Her father loved to dance and was always the life of the party and her mother was a wonderful singer from the band era. One of Solari’s most vivid memories with her father was listening to “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra through a cassette player when she was younger and writing down the lyrics with her father; this song became their family motto. “That song meant a lot to all of us kids,” said Solari. Laurie Lacey is the oldest daughter and she remembers the hard times, like when her mother was working at a hamburger joint and her father was working three jobs. “They never did have a lot of money. But they had a lot of love, and it went a long way,” Lacey said. One of Lacey’s favorite qualities about her mother was her sense of humor. “She just made life more enjoyable,” Lacey said. Lacey learned from her parents the

importance of working hard, love and a deep faith. Sue Johnson is a retired school teacher and another daughter of Howard and Laura Serena. “Our family found joy in being together,” Johnson said. Music was a huge part of all of their lives, and her father taught all of the daughters how to dance. “[My parents had] a love that always wanted what was best for each other,” she said. “I think that is a rare thing.” Johnson believes that the greatest gifts that her parents’ love gave her was that love endures everything and the value of family. Howard’s own father died when he was 10 years old, and Johnson said because of that experience her dad always saw how valuable family was. Gina Hare, another daughter of the Serenas, lived alongside her parents during their last ten years of life. When Hare’s father grew older he suffered from dementia, but his dementia seemed to lessen when her mother began to have horrible falls. “It was like his dementia lessened and he was zeroed in on taking care of her… he was always right there by her,” Hare said. Hare believes that the biggest lesson she learned from the pair are the importance of commitment, family and faith. In fact, her mother’s wish before she passed away was that all five sisters would get together once a year and pass her ring off to each other and remain close. Mary Serena is the youngest of all of Laura and Howard’s children. As a single mother, Mary moved back in with her parents and then three-year-old son, Kristiian Serena, and remained living there until he was about 10 years old. “[He was] the only father my son ever knew,” Serena said. HOPE PREVAILS
Remembering Rosewood Descendant Lizzie Robinson Jenkins Preserves History by Peggy Macdonald
L
izzie Robinson Jenkins walks down a dirt road lined with majestic live oaks near the 40acre parcel her grandfather, Rev. Charlie Louis Brown Sr. purchased in 1904. She said her grandfather planted the trees to delineate the property lines on this farmland in tiny Archer, located in southwest Alachua County. The trees now form an impressive canopy that provides dense pockets of shade even on the hottest Florida day. Aside from the trees, the land looks much as it did over a century ago. The sounds of roosters crowing and donkeys braying remind visitors that they are in the country. Jenkins hopes to transform her grandfather’s property into an educational farm and community center to offer Archer students firsthand experiences with farm life. She grew up on her parents’ farm nearby. “I can’t live in a city,” Jenkins reflected. “I like space. It’s part of who I am.” Family is another important part of who Lizzie Jenkins is. Her aunt, Mahulda “Gussie” Brown Carrier, was born

in Archer in 1894 and married Aaron Carrier in 1917. Gussie and Aaron Carrier survived the tragedy at Rosewood in January 1923 and changed their last name to Carroll. Out of concern for their safety, they moved at least 15 times after the incident. Gussie lived in fear until her death in Tampa in 1948, according to her niece. During an interview at her home in November, Jenkins shared her family’s history of Rosewood. “This story has been told many ways,” she explained. “This is how my aunt told it.” Jenkins’ maternal great-grandparents, Richard and Juliann Sams, were enslaved and purchased by Mississippian James M. Parchman, who brought them to Archer in 1839. In her book “Alachua County, Florida” (part of Arcadia Publishing’s Black America series), Jenkins reported that her great-grandparents were forced to walk barefoot to Archer and never saw their families again. Families were routinely separated for profit or punishment under slavery. Jenkins recounted that her great-grandmother never saw her parents again.
“She never talked about them,” she said. Even though Jenkins’ great-grandmother went by the name Juliann, her descendants think her real name was Lizzie Polly. Juliann would often tell stories about her slave master. She said she would never tell him her name, so he gave her the name Julia. Born in 1826, “Julia” changed her name to Juliann when she was older. “We think her real name was Lizzie Polly because she would end stories with, ‘You don’t mess with Lizzie Polly,’” Jenkins recalled. Juliann’s granddaughter was Mahulda “Gussie” Brown. When she married Aaron Carrier in 1917, the word “colored” followed their names twice on their marriage license, almost as if it was part of their names. Jenkins found her aunt Gussie’s marriage license at the Levy County Courthouse after the hidden history of Rosewood made national news in the early 1980s. First, a 1982 article Gary Moore wrote for The St. Petersburg Times shed light on one of the most secretive racial atrocities in the nation’s seniortimesmagazine.com

The oil painting depicts Rosewood residents’ escape while the African American town was destroyed in January 1923. According to Jenkins, proceeds from sales of the painting will help fund a Rosewood museum. www.rosewoodflorida.com.

history. Next, the article inspired a feature story on the CBS show “60 Minutes.” At long last, the truth was out there. Jenkins remembers what it was like when her family kept the truth about Rosewood’s secret out of fear. Her aunt “was miserable all her life,” she said. “She was so afraid.” There are two main versions of what happened at Rosewood starting on Jan. 1, 1923 — the “white” version and the “black” version. The white version is based upon an accusation by Fannie Taylor, whose husband James worked at the sawmill in nearby Sumner. Taylor, a young white woman, claimed that she had been sexually assaulted by a black man. Rosewood descendants tell a different story. According to this version, Taylor claimed she was sexually assaulted by a black man to conceal an affair she was having with a white lover. Once the accusation had been made, however, an angry mob headed to the African American town of Rosewood. Aaron Carrier collected Gussie, who was a schoolteacher in Rosewood.
24
February 2019
They went to his aunt Sarah Carrier’s house for safety, according to Jenkins. She described Sarah as a pillar of the community, someone Rosewood residents would turn to in times of trouble. Jenkins said a moonshine-fueled white mob descended upon Sarah Carrier’s house to search for the alleged assailant. The mob kicked the door in and dragged Aaron out of bed. “They put a noose around his neck and dragged him,” she said. “They almost beat him to death.” Before the mob could lynch Aaron, Sheriff Robert Elias Walker intervened and took him to jail in Gainesville for safe keeping, Jenkins said. Then the mob put a rope around Gussie, but they did not drag her, Jenkins said. Instead, they tried to get her to confess that Aaron had attacked Fannie Taylor. “She said her husband was at home all night long with her,” Jenkins said, explaining that they didn’t like her aunt’s tone. So, she said they sexually assaulted her. The mob violence continued for days, resulting in an estimated death toll of six black men and two white men, seniortimesmagazine.com
although some argue that the count was higher. Every building in Rosewood was burned to the ground except for a house owned by John Wright that still stands today. A historical marker near the house credits Wright for sheltering several African Americans who fled the violence. The house is up for sale now, and there has been talk of turning it into a museum that would preserve the history of Rosewood. After surviving Rosewood, Jenkins’ aunt and uncle eventually moved to Jacksonville. Aaron got a job as a taxi driver because it did not require an ID, according to Jenkins. Gussie worked for a doctor as a maid, concealing the fact that she had previously worked as a teacher while living in Rosewood. As an extra layer of precaution, Aaron and Gussie changed their last name from Carrier to Carroll. Jenkins still has her aunt’s letters addressed to Mrs. Mahulda G. Carroll, Mrs. M. G. Carrier
and other names. “They tried to stay hidden and discreet for a long time,” Jenkins explained. Jenkins remembers her aunt as someone who seldom smiled. “She spent the rest of her life trying to erase that history,” Jenkins recalled. “She never did.” Lizzie Jenkins will discuss her family’s history at the Matheson History Museum on Thursday, February 7 at 6 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public. More information is available at mathesonmuseum.org. Jenkins is the Founder and President of The Real Rosewood Foundation, which funds the Mahulda “Gussie” Brown Scholarship. The Foundation is selling Pedro Jermaine’s original painting, “Hope Prevails” to generate funds to build a Rosewood museum. More information can be found at rosewoodflorida.com. s

We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

COLUMN œ DONNA BONNELL
Embracing Life Enamored by the Hammered Dulcimer
F
ebruary is the month for sharing love – the most important and valuable earthly quality. Love embraces a spectrum of positive emotions, ranging from humanitarian virtues to life’s simple pleasures to romantic affection. The Arts are mankind’s vehicle to creatively communicate our appreciation of love. Fortunately, we are artistically gifted in different ways. I express my gratitude via this column. Regular readers know, however, that I am deficient in musical skills. It was not until late in my life’s journey, that I began embracing the extraordinary healing powers of music. Sometime in the 1800s, Danish author, Hans Christian Anderson wrote, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Centuries later I stumbled upon Anderson’s wise words while researching an apparatus equally ancient. Some things are timeless and surface into our lives at just the right time. Such is the case with finding this quote and experiencing the ethereal sounds of the hammered dulcimer. I was unaware that a hammered dulcimer existed and was not alone. Research indicates that even individuals educated in American music confuse the hammered dulcimer with a mountain dulcimer. A mountain (or plucked) dulcimer is a stringed instrument, while the hammered dulcimer is an ancestor of the piano. The origins of the hammered dulcimer were circa 900 A.D., somewhere in
32

the Middle East. The instruments were transported by trekkers across the globe and by the 12th Century A.D. were found in Europe. In 1717, the first written reference of this instrument (in North America) was made by Judge Samuel Sewell of Massachusetts. Essentially, the dulcimer vanished during part of the 20th Century. Historians believe that the majestic piano replaced the simplistic hammered dulcimer, which explains why many Americans do not know about this delightful device. Fortunately, it is being rediscovered. Recently my church sponsored a concert, staring dulcimist Robert Burns. Magically (maybe), my schedule cooperated with satisfying my curiosity and I attended. The celestial melodies coming from the wooden dulcimer were spiritually soothing. My soul was immediately infatuated. Mark Edelman, dulcimer builder and shop owner confirmed my interpretation. He said this about the meaning of dulcimer, “It’s actually a descriptive word. A combination of Greek and Latin words meaning sweet melody.” Hammered dulcimers have strings stretched over a sounding board. The instruments are trapezoidal in shape, usually placed on a stand and angled in front of the player. The musician strikes the strings with specially designed mallets, called hammers. I understand they are easy to learn
how to play, relatively inexpensive and can be enjoyed almost anywhere. In fact, individuals with innate musical talents are able to teach themselves. Many say they are perfect for beginners, even young children. As the dulcimer’s popularity rebounds, its comforting tones are being heard in campgrounds, churches and concert halls. Yet, folk music fans find the sweet sounds almost addicting. Festivals are popping up around the country. Since the outdoor setting is conducive for enjoyment of these tranquil tunes, the climate is the biggest challenge for dulcimer owners. Cold, dust, heat, humidity, insect repellant, perspiration, rain and sunlight can all harm the glue, strings and wood. Diligent enthusiasts learn how to gently clean, handle with care and accurately tune their fine musical instruments. Burn’s performance exuded his enthusiasm. He is a composer, educator and musician. According to Burns, there are few full-time hammered dulcimists, but interest is growing. It is easy to understand why, as I was enamored the first time I heard the instrument played. If you are searching for a unique gift for someone special on Valentine’s Day, consider purchasing a CD of dulcimer tunes. Plan to play its enchanting music, while dining on a delicious feast, and love will simply float in the air. While writing is my passion, I must admit Anderson is correct. Those lost for appropriate words, can communicate their love by enjoying the endearing music from a hammered dulcimer with their Valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day! s Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. She enjoys living and working in the town she now calls home. bonneldj@gmail.com

Miracle on South Division Street March 1 – March 24; previews February 27 & 28 Hippodrome audiences fell in love with Tom Dudzick’s infectiously hilarious and genuinely heartwarming plays Over the Tavern and King o’ the Moon. Miracle on South Division Street is the story of the Nowak family, living in the East Side of Buffalo, New York, where Clara, the family matriarch, happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a twenty-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. The Nowak family’s faith is shaken to the very core when a deathbed confession causes the family legend to unravel, and the results are heartfelt and hilarious. “Best comedy of the year! A great hook that will keep generations laughing. You have to see it to believe it.” – Examiner.com. OCALA CIVIC THEATRE

In this adaptation, Georg and Amalia, two bickering clerks in a Budapest perfume shop in 1934, can’t stand each other. However, they’re really each other’s “Dear Friend,” secret pen pals falling in love through their lonely-hearts letters. Wistful and warm-hearted, it’s no secret why this is a favorite! Finding Neverland February 22 Finding Neverland tells the incredible story behind Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible, and the wonder of childhood lasts
forever. Tickets and pricing vary based on location and are reduced for students. GAINESVILLE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE
Time of My Life January 25 – February 10 Gerry Stratton has organized a family dinner with his sons Glyn and Adam at his favorite restaurant to celebrate his wife Laura’s 54th birthday. Glyn is with his longsuffering wife Stephanie; their marriage looks to be on firmer ground that it once was. Adam has brought along his new girlfriend, an outrageous hairdresser, and they are both eager to impress. Gradually, family skeletons intrude on the happy domestic scene: Glyn’s unfaithfulness knows no bounds, the family transport business has been hit by the recession, and Laura has been unfaithful. Time of My Life is a microcosm of a typical American family. HIGH SPRINGS PLAYHOUSE
Savannah Sipping Society February 1 – 24 From the authors of Dixie Swim Club comes a laugh-a-minute comedy about four Southern women, all needing to escape their day-to-day routines, drawn together by fate—and an impromptu happy hour. Randa, a perfectionist and workaholic; Dot, still reeling from her husband’s recent demise; earthy and boisterous Marlafaye, a good ol’ Texas gal; and new to town, Jinx, a spunky fireball, offers her services as a life coach for these women. Hilarious misadventures and the occasional liquid refreshment lead the ladies to discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment. February 2019

Talk to Me BY JOHN KENNEY c.2019, Putnam $26.00 / $35.00 Canada, 304 pages

he view from above was stunning. The cliché says that people look like ants when you’re looking down from a ledge, and they do. Trees look like the lint you’d pick off a sweater, and it seems like you could reach out and grab a cloud. It’s humbling and powerful, but in the new novel “Talk to Me” by John Kenney, it’s a long way down from any height. Ted Grayson was falling. He’d hired the instructor just hours ago, gotten a quick lesson on skydiving, and he’d been pushed out of the plane, just like in the movies. The instructor assured Ted that he’d survive this expe-

rience. Thing was, Ted didn’t want to. It all started on his birthday, didn’t it? Or was it when his daughter, Frannie, was a teenager and had rebelled, as teenagers do? No, the beginning of the end was when Ted let his marriage slowly die, he’d stopped coming home after the last newscast, he lost interest in his wife, and Claire met someone else. Someone, she so harshly pointed out, who was “happy.” But his birthday was the cherry on the sundae. Ted was in “a mood,” wrapping up the last story of the night when one thing led to another and another and he exploded, calling the temporary make-up girl something vile. It wasn’t on-camera – he was too professional for that – but on video and then, to his befuddled regret, online. Suddenly, Ted Grayson, news anchor to millions, was Ted Grayson, internet fool. And don’t think he didn’t apologize. He did, but the ridicule expanded upon itself when someone dug up an ancient clip of a battle-hardened soldier insulting Ted. The station was inundated with protesters and calls for Ted’s firing. Women’s groups were incensed. Then Frannie wrote a scathing story about her father and though it wasn’t her intention, the story went viral. And so, in more ways than one, Ted

BOOK REVIEW BY
Grayson was falling… If ever there was a book plucked from real life, “Talk to Me” is it. Beginning with a miserable last-ditch aim at suicide, author John Kenney tells a blunt, hilariously nuanced but devastatingly emotional tale of the age of internet and instant news — when the past doesn’t always stay in the past and anything can happen online. It’s altogether too easy to see yourself in this novel, in other words, and that’s like a gut-punch. And yet, you’ll laugh because Kenney is profane, with a biting, spit-out-yourcoffee kind of wit that underscores the pathos and irony of it all. Indeed, Ted is nasty, but so is what happened to him and Schadenfreude weeps from each page. You’ll see it, especially if you’ve ever snorted at someone else’s gaffe. But again, the reality sets in. We could be Ted. Ted is us.
What a novel. Readers who relish a little snark with their story will love this one, as will those who enjoy tattletale videos and gossip mags. “Talk to Me” will make you think, and you won’t want to put it down. s Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books.
