Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip. Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.

Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.

Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. <M Maari rily lyyn befo beefo foree, aagge 6 fore 68 8 See Se ee my sto t ryy at Exxce E xce cep pttio i na nalD Den e tiist stry ryy.ccom om

Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place. PI-DAY

Daylight Savings

3/10

If you enjoy the long and warm days of summer, then good news, they are on their way back! On March 10, clocks will be springing forward an hour. The idea of Daylight Saving originated in the mind of Benjamin Franklin after he wrote a satirical letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris outlining how many pounds of candle wax would be saved if clocks aligned better with the sun.

We’ve all heard the classic line from Shakespeare’s epic tale of “Julius Caesar,” just before the tragic ending. The “Ides of March” literally means the midpoint of the month of March. Caesar was murdered by as many as 60 conspirators. Today the spot of his assassination in Rome is home to a no-kill animal shelter for cats. March 2019

TRY YOUR LUCK

Irish Folklore Clovers, Leprechauns and Pots of Gold — Oh My!

story by Cameron Cobb photography by Ericka Winterrowd

E

ver wonder what makes a four-leaf clover so lucky? Or if there really just might be some gold at the end of a rainbow (no matter what logic or anyone else tells you)? Whether you’re curious about the Saint of St. Patrick’s Day or the origin of a leprechaun, explore a few of the favorites when it comes to Irish history and legends.

St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is an iconic part of Ireland adopted by countries all over the world. In 2018, nearly 150 million people were planning to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the United States alone, according to nrf.com. This holiday is a commemorative celebration honoring the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. The holiday is recognized annually on March 17, with this being the believed date of Saint Patrick’s death in 461 AD. Saint Patrick was born and lived in Roman Britain before coming to Ireland – or rather, being forced to Ireland. At 16, he was kidnapped and brought to the country as a slave, though eventually he managed to escape. However, something made Saint Patrick wish to return to Ireland, where during this time he was thought to bring Christianity to the country. While Saint Patrick himself might not be known all over the world, one well-known legend suggests he used the leaves of a shamrock (Irish clover) to describe the Holy Trinity, or the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And while much of the world has adopted celebrating alongside it’s country of origin, it hasn’t exactly always been Irish tra-

dition to feature pitchers of green beer and city-wide parades. The common Irish tradition starts with attending church in the morning and then spending the latter part of the day enjoying drinks, dancing and a feast of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Four-leaf Clovers Speaking of shamrocks, it’s hard to hear Ireland without clovers coming to mind, especially when there’s good luck involved! Based on one Christian legend, Eve carried a four-leaf clover with her after being banished from Paradise, meaning whenever someone finds a four leaf clover, they’re essentially discovering a “piece of the blessed Paradise,” according to goodlucksymbols.com.

Though the myths may vary, the most shared belief of what the four leaves represent are faith, hope, love and of, course, luck. This next myth was believed by many during the Middle Ages, it was thought that a four-leaf clover would give the carrier the powers to see fairies, identify witches and have improved awareness with any surrounding evil spirits. Though the myths may vary, the most shared belief of what the four leaves represent are faith, hope, love and, of course, luck. And with a one in 10,000 chance of discovering a four-leaf clover versus one with three leaves, it’s certainly always a lucky find! seniortimesmagazine.com

Leprechauns

chauns the ideal protector for the fairies’ funds. Another legend mentions that if a human happened to stumble upon the rare sight of a leprechaun guarding this hidden treasure spot, he or she could interrogate the being into giving up the gold — as long as they kept an unbroken gaze. But look away for even just a second and these sneaky creatures could escape in no time! While there’s a common consensus that leprechauns shared the physical similarities to that of a small older man, they haven’t always sported the same famously colored outfit the world’s come to know. Before the twentieth century, you’d more likely hear of a leprechaun dressed in a red coat instead of green. Although, the specifics of their appearance varied based on different areas in Ireland.

Typically thought to appear as short, elderly men each living in solitude, leprechauns might not seem like the best choice for a fairy to task as the gold guardians. However, looks can be deceiving. Their sly, mischievous behavior combined with a quick wit made lepre-

Just be sure to keep an eye out as you take your next stroll in the wood, you never know when you might come across the end of a rainbow — or a leprechaun guarding that gold. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! s

Oh, what a rich thought! Unfortunately, it’s more wishful than hopeful, as the 360-degree design of a rainbow essentially just gives the illusion to an end one will never find — lying beneath the horizon. The myth that there may be a giant pot overflowing with shiny coins at the bottom of a rainbow has been around for centuries, with one legend dating back to Old European times, according to luckyireland.com. Like with four-leaf clovers, the pot-ofgold idea is commonly credited to fairies. These tiny mythical creatures supposedly would bury their riches under the mark of a rainbow’s end, where one origin story credits leprechauns to keeping a watchful eye over these treasures.

Tinseltown Talks Carl Reiner Says Keeping Busy Keeps You Going by Nick Thomas

T

urning 97 in March, Carl Reiner shows no sign of slowing down. “I wake up with ideas,” the veteran actor, writer, director, and producer said from Los Angeles. One of those ideas was to colorize episodes of his crown television jewel, “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” Two color episodes were produced in 2017 and last year Reiner selected a couple more favorites, with plots loosely based on his family’s experience, which aired on CBS over the holiday season. “I’ve done a lot in my life but have to say that show is what I’m most proud of,” Reiner said. “We couldn’t afford to shoot it originally in color and make a profit, but I’m so pleased with the colorized episodes – they look fantastic.” In “Where Did I Come From?” young Richie (Larry Matthews) questions his parents about his birth, much like Reiner’s own children did, while in “Never Bathe on Saturday” Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) gets stuck in a hotel bathtub, ruining a vacation for hubby Rob (Dick Van Dyke). “I wrote that based on the time my wife and I were away, and she noticed the faucet dripping while taking a bath and wanted to get a plumber,” Reiner recalled. Reiner said it was important to produce colorized versions close to the originals. “Luckily some enterprising photographers were on hand during the original filming and took color photos of the set and actors,” he noted. “So some colors are very accurate, like the rooms.

Colorization has come a long way and I wish we could do all 158 episodes, but it’s very expensive.” Reiner’s 2017 HBO documentary “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast” was also recently released on DVD in which he narrates a series of interviews with active nonagenarians. “In my opening section, I’m reading the newspaper obituary section and remark if I’m not in it, I’ll have breakfast,” he said. “They thought that would make a good title.” The documentary features 90+ year-old guests still active in areas such as sports, fashion, music, comedy, and acting such Carl Reiner with Betty White, who appear in If You’re Not in as Dick Van Dyke, Kirk the Obit, Eat Breakfast. unState Federal Credit Union and Dawn Realty know that bringing authors and musicians to Gainesville is a great idea. That’s why both have donated $1,000 each to help bring special programming to the Alachua County Library District for the community. The donations will specifically fund the second concert of the Library’s Music Series on March 24 and support a special author event to be scheduled for late summer. These events help further the Library District’s mission of building a better community by creating opportunities to participate, connect and discover. An extension of SunState’s support of these events is the individual commitment by Dawn Realty’s David Nicholson, who serves as a volunteer on the Credit Union’s board of directors. “Partnering with the library in providing special programs is a natural extension of who we are – your local credit union,” said Robert Hart, SunState’s Vice President of Marketing.

Clovers and Leprechauns

T

he location of our cottage home was set back off the road, down a long lane and nestled in the trees along a river. It was a magical place; one could even stretch and say it was enchanted. Our homesite had an interesting history. I was told Native Americans used to call it home before the land was homesteaded by ancestors in our family. I often looked at the massive oak trees on the property and wondered at the sights they must have seen. There seemed to be an “old wisdom” to the place, and I never felt afraid when I was home alone. I took my first steps on this land, and in return I feel the land embraced me wholeheartedly. My playground was the hillside, and my playmates were the critters that surrounded me. When I was just a toddler and old enough to explore our back yard, I picked my first bouquet of springtime clovers for my mother. She was so touched that she pressed the bouquet and put it in a photo album. In the spring and summer our yard was a sea of clover blossoms. Rather than typical leaves, the clover plant is made up of shamrock-like leaves. Usually these are three-leaf clovers but occasionally, if you are lucky, you will find a four-leaf clover hidden amongst them. A favorite pastime for me would be sitting in the middle of a clover patch and searching for that elusive, and very lucky, four-leaf clover. I spent many hours in my life-

18

March 2019

time doing just that, and for my efforts I collected quite a few. Time passed and when my grandfather retired from farming, we were required to leave this utopian homesite

and move to the farmhouse they were vacating. Since the land was tenant farmed, the landlord wanted the house inhabited by the family who was farming the ground. It broke my mother’s

heart to leave our home, but she vowed that she would return one day. Keeping her promise, she hung onto the cottage and the land it was on for more than 25 years. She kept the lawn mowed, and even planted flower beds and trees anticipating her future return. Years later when my father was preparing for his retirement, he remembered my mother’s vow to return to the little cottage in the woods. However, 25 years had taken a toll on the house, even with my mother’s best efforts to maintain it. He happened upon plans for an A-frame home in a newspaper he picked up at his barber’s shop. It just “clicked” with him and he felt this is what he wanted to do for my mother, who had sacrificed so much when leaving the life she loved. The A-frame was built on the same site as the little cottage, and it looked as if it grew there, perfectly situated on the hill. It was my mother’s cherished home for the rest of her life. When both of my parents passed, this special place became our family’s. We lived in a city in the urban South, so we felt our children would benefit from summers spent in the country, connecting with the roots of their ancestors. We kept the A-frame, and when the “chicks” were young we would head north the very first day of their school’s summer vacation, staying until the week before it started back up. Whenever we opened the gate and drove up that long lane, I felt I was being welcomed home by this land who knew me so well. Now here is a story I’m about to share that actually happened. It is yours to believe or not, but I assure you it is true. One year, when I was there during the summer alone with my young children, it was an especially busy day. I was planting flowers, making lunches for an impromptu picnic with the girls, and playing with my youngest on the deck just off our living room. I had also been driving our pickup truck around the seniortimesmagazine.com

property, raking up leaves and branches from flower beds and taking them in the truck to our burn pile. By late afternoon I realized my new prescription reading glasses were missing. They were only a few weeks old and rather expensive, so I really wanted to find them! I was quite shaken, because I had been all over that day, and there was no other way to find them but to retrace my steps. The rest of the evening was spent searching, and re-searching everywhere. I searched the yard, the house, the truck, the burn pile, and the deck where I played with my little one. I did my best to search the flower beds I had raked. I remember going out on the deck one last time as the sun was setting and feeling heartsick that I had been so careless. The next morning, being the first to rise, I took my coffee out on the deck where I enjoyed listening to the birds and breathing the fresh morning air. As I opened the sliding glass doors to the deck, something caught my attention down near my feet. I couldn’t believe my eyes: right there were my glasses! They were exactly where I had walked in and out numerous times the day before, in plain sight on the wood deck floor, folded and carefully placed where I couldn’t miss them. I was speechless. I remembered taking these same exact steps the night before while watching the sunset when I was so troubled about my carelessness. No glasses were there last night.

When my chicks woke up later that morning, I told them the story. They were so happy that I had my glasses again, but strangely not very surprised. They said, “Don’t you know, Mama? There’s leprechauns in these woods!” Whether it is the wise Indian spirits who linger on this land, or gnomes or fairies or leprechauns… this place is very special to our family. We love it, and it loves us back.

They were so happy that I had my glasses again, but strangely not very surprised. They said, “Don’t you know, Mama? There’s leprechauns in these woods!” As the years have passed, so have our circumstances. Our chicks are grown, with busy schedules and limited vacation days. My husband and I are older too, and the two-day road trip to the A-frame isn’t as easy as it used to be. I made the difficult decision that this precious home with all its memories should pass on to a new generation. A young man in our family has purchased the home now and is breathing new life into its walls. We see that he treasures the home as much as we did. I wonder if he’s met the leprechauns yet… s

The McCarrolls of Morningside Irish Roots are Linked to the Hogan Cabin

Story and photography by Julia Mitchem

N

estled deep inside the Morningside Nature Center is the Living History Farm, which is a recreation of the Hogan Cabin. The McCarrolls were an Irish immigrant family who built the cabin. According to the Morningside Nature Center website, the farm includes the cabin (which dates all the way back to the 1840s), a board and batten kitchen, a barn (with heritage breed farm animals), an heirloom garden and a one-room schoolhouse. The cabin originally belonged to Michael and Sarah McCarroll. According to Kate Devine’s research, who is a former Morningside employee, Michael McCarroll immigrated from County Cook in Ireland to (assumably) Georgia. He was literate, which was unusual for Irish immigrants at that time, and most likely means he was of a higher station. He was Catholic and is found listed in the 1850 Alachua County census. Michael McCarroll owned farm property and later property in Gainesville near SW 4th Avenue and 3rd Street. He passed away at age 78 and can be found in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Rochelle, Florida. His wife, Sarah McCarroll, was born in Georgia. Her nickname was “Sallie” and she passed away at age 52. She is buried in the same cemetery as her husband. Michael and Sarah had six children: Susan McCarroll, Joseph McCarroll, Michael Green McCarroll, Mary McCarroll, Sarah McCarroll and Miles McCarroll. Their eldest daughter, Susan, was willed the cabin and 40 acres by her father. She lived there in the cabin until her death, and is buried in the same cemetery as her parents. The Hogan Cabin was originally located between Cross

Creek and Micanopy. It was built in the 1840s out of handhewn longleaf pine by Michael McCarroll. The cabin was later donated by Zane and Ruth Hogan — as it was the childhood home of Angie McCarroll Tillman, who was the grandaughter of Joseph McCarroll and grandmother of Zane Hogan. In 1976, the cabin was dissembled, transported and then

According to Bricky Way, recreation leader for the City of Gainesville, about 40 to 50 percent of the original boards made it to Morningside and were used to reconstruct the cabin. Way has been working at Morningside Nature Center for the past four years. People endearingly refer to him as the “farm manager.” Some of Way’s responsibilities include maintenance of the Living History Farm and taking school groups on tours of the Hogan Cabin. “There’s a whole stream of school children that get to see the cabin and the way people lived, much like the original family would’ve lived,” Way said. “That’s part of the way I take care of it. generations, so they can have an appreciation for how people used to live.” Way has found that his time spent at the Hogan Cabin has come full circle. In 1995, Way moved down from South Carolina to attend the University of Florida. He had always been interested in old southern cemeteries and spent several afternoons exploring the Oak Ridge Cemetery, which is where many of the McCarrolls are buried. It wasn’t until he was going back over the research collected on the family in February of 2019 that he found that he recognized the very tombstones of Michael and Sarah McCarroll. “I just found out yesterday that Michael McCarroll … was buried in that cemetery,” Way said. “I saw a photograph of his gravestone and I recognized it, I remembered where it was. So, I knew that [about] 20 years ago I saw the gravestone of the man whose house I am now helping to take care of.” Visitors are able to come see the Hogan Cabin at anytime, but in order to take a tour of the cabin — a Morningside employee needs to be present. Morningside Nature Center is always looking for volunteers to take a part in keeping the history of the cabin alive. During September to May, the first Saturday of each month, the farm has live interpretive experiences open to the public – including volunteers who dress in period clothing and various activities such as cooking on the old wood stove in the cabin. It’s clear that the roots of Ireland still reside at Morningside, perhaps some four-leaf clovers do too! s

RECIPE WONDERS FOOD ST Y LING & PHOTOGR A PH Y BY ERICK A WINTER ROWD

CRO CK PO T

T

here was no such thing as a Crock Pot® in my mother’s kitchen. Back in those days everything was done in a Dutch oven on top of the stove, carefully tended as she worked in her kitchen or finished some housework. Nowadays many homemakers are also breadwinners, requiring them to be away from their kitchens during the day while tending their careers. That doesn’t mean you have to give up home cooking, however. The invention of the slow cooker can bring the joys of home cooking back into your home with a relatively small amount of effort. St. Patrick’s Day meals typically include corned beef and cabbage and that is a perfect meal to try out in your slow cooker. More than likely you have a Crock Pot® tucked away in the dark recesses of your kitchen cabinets or pantry. Search it out, dust it off—and try this recipe! You are going to love it!

AGE B B A C ® CORNED BEEF AND

But why is corned beef and cabbage always the meal of choice for this Irish holiday? According to irishcentral.com, corned beef is actually not an Irish national dish. Its popularity originated as part of the Irish-American culture, and this is where it became associated with St. Patrick’s Day. The Irish immigrants found the cost of corned beef in America much more affordable than in their native land, where it was considered a delicacy. In Ireland the usual dish was “bacon and cabbage,” but the bacon was quickly replaced by corned beef, since it was readily available in America. And what does it mean, exactly, corned beef? Delish.com describes in its history of St. Patrick’s Day food, that the curing of the beef is done with largegrained rock salt, also referred to as “corns” of salt. Beef that has been cured with salt often has a slight gray color, which you may notice when selecting your meat at the grocery store. This is

perfectly normal. Most corned beef you purchase prepackaged from the grocery store will come with a small packet of seasonings. I only use half of the seasonings, but lay a few bay leaves on top of the meat. Chop up a clove of garlic into tiny pieces and sprinkle this onto the meat while it cooks as well. I like to use some “new potatoes,” which are small red potatoes, leaving on the skins and just removing the potato “eyes” with a paring knife. In the morning, place the potatoes and onion in the bottom of your slow cooker. If you add carrots you may put them in at this time as well. The carrots should be skinned and cut into serving size pieces. Place the meat on top of the vegetables. Sprinkle the seasoning packet, bay leaves and the garlic on top of the meat. Add a cup of water to the pot, put on the lid and set heat for 8-10 hours. The slower you cook the meat, the more tender it will be.

When you return home and the time is nearly up, remove the meat and add the cabbage for the remaining 40 or 60 minutes. Replace the meat on top. The cabbage can also be done separately in a saucepan on top of your stove, which will take less time to cook. Use some of the broth from the crock pot to add flavor if you decide to cook the cabbage in a saucepan. You do not want to put the cabbage in the slow cooker all day, as it will get too mushy and not be the ideal result you are going for. “Sure and begorrah!” There you have it—not very hard at all. Just add some green beer and a loaf of soda bread to the menu, and you’re Irish for a day (or as long as the leftovers last)! s

CROCK POT® CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE TIP: Cabbage can also be cooked separately in a saucepan on your stove. Add some broth from the Crock Pot® to enhance the flavor.

INGREDIENTS: 1 corned beef brisket (3-4 pounds) with seasoning packet 1 onion, cut in thick wedges 1 bag petite red potatoes (can use less) 5 carrots, peeled and cut into serving pieces 1 clove garlic, chopped fine 1 cup water 1 head cabbage, cut in thick wedges METHOD: Prepare vegetables, excluding the cabbage, and place in bottom of the slow cooker. Place the corned beef on top and sprinkle seasonings on the meat. You can add some pepper if desired, but no salt. Since the beef has been cured with salt, you will not need to add more. Pour the cup of water into the pot, replace the lid and set for 8-10 hours. The more slowly you cook the meat, the more tender it will be. 40-60 minutes before time is up, remove the meat and place the cabbage wedges on top of the vegetables. Replace the meat and lid to finish cooking.

We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

Embracing Life Ambassador Billie Bob

W

ho are your heroes? Oftentimes folks find fictional idols superior to real people. If those fictitious champions promote positivity, their make-believe characters are commendable. For example, in the “Rocky” films, the rookie boxer became a superstar. Rocky Balboa endured a brutal training schedule, which included climbing up 72 steep stone steps to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Everyone was ecstatic when Balboa finally ran to the top, victoriously raised his arms and the theme song, “Gonna Fly Now,” climaxed. Vice President Walter Mondale even used this uplifting tune during his 1984 presidential campaign. That same year Evander Holyfield began competing. Mondale lost the election, but Holyfield became the cruiserweight champion later in that decade. In the 1990s he won the heavyweight championship and became the only boxer to win the undisputed championship in two weight classes. Holyfield won my admiration with his quote, “It is not the size of a man but the size of his heart that matters.” Fast forward three decades. A life-changing event thrust me into the senior citizen scene. Joining a gym seemed an advantageous avenue to find my new normal. In a futile attempt to workout in classes above my fitness

grade, I injured my back. Ugh. Age had cruelly snuck up on me. What was next? One serene afternoon, I timidly watched a group exercising while seated in chairs. Magically (maybe), I heard “Gonna Fly Now” playing. Billie Bob Sykes emerged and invited me to attend. Her mystical influence, coupled with the motivational music, alleviated my apprehension. I slowly opened the door, tiptoed towards the back of the room, got a chair and followed the trainer’s instructions. Her advice was excellent. Energetic enthusiasm engulfed the classroom. Specific calisthenics were taught to those unable or not ready for more rigorous workouts. Various challenge levels were offered, intended to build confidence and strength. Billy Bob is 94-years-young and exudes an amazing inner drive. Her love of sports earned her the role of President of the Athletic Association at her Junior College. Smirking, she said, “My female college classmates were smoking cigarettes and playing bridge, while I was on the tennis court.” Her life story is filled with accomplishments. She nonchalantly mentioned her Atlanta débutante status. Incidentally, she was the first person, not from Atlanta, to attain that distinction. Billie Bob’s mother introduced her to

Purple Heart recipient, Lucien Sykes. He served in the Infantry during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mom had two free movie tickets and insisted that Billie Bob invite him. Reluctantly, (ladies did not ask men out) she followed her mother’s advice. He said, “Yes!” It was not love at first sight. However, they eventually married, moved to Gainesville and raised a family. When Lucien passed, Billie Bob joined the gym. She said, “It wasn’t time for me to go up yonder!” Before long she identified her new purpose – spokesperson for senior club members. At her request, she became the club’s Hostess. The five-foot-tall (ish) advocate is not shy. She proposed offering more activities geared towards older folks. Management listened. “Sit To Be Fit” classes were created. Billie Bob refused to take credit. However, she quickly showed off the t-shirt she designed, “AGE AIN’T NOTHIN BUT A NUMBER.” Recently, the club’s owner honored her with the “Most Inspiration” award (only received by two other employees). A party, trophy and life-size cutout were all a surprise. Best of all, she was promoted to Ambassador rank. Her cutout is strategically displayed, which includes a sign that says, “Rack Your Weights, So I Don’t Have To.” The young athletes respect her. She has been photographed numerous times standing next to her realistic cardboard statue. Nowadays I look forward to attending the classes, especially when I know my hero will be there. Holyfield’s analysis is a perfect description of Billie Bob. Her huge heart expands well beyond the scope of her physical appearance. § Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. She enjoys living and working in the town she now calls home. bonneldj@gmail.com

BOOK REVIEW BY

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

No Sunscreen for the Dead BY TIM DORSEY c.2019, Wm. Morrow $26.99 / $33.50 Canada, 323 pages

Y

ou didn’t recognize the number. So you didn’t answer the phone. That’s how you operate these days: accept calls you know, and keep your money in your wallet. You never know who’s going to try to take it, and in the new book “No Sunscreen for the Dead” by Tim Dorsey, not everyone has a hero to get it back. Serge Storms and his sidekick, Coleman, have retired. Serge had always wanted to, and there was no better time than when they were touring Florida’s

Gulf-side “Retirement Coast.” The tour was also a great excuse to meet senior “heroes” – veterans and once-upona-time volunteers – and to right some wrongs that Serge knew had been done. It seemed that door-to-door salesmen were selling Sarasota-area seniors a pile of unneeded items – restaurant-grade kitchens, monster-sized humidifiers, tchotchkes and dust-collectors – and emptying their wallets in the meantime. Serge had a soft spot in his heart for those elders because he knew their sacrifices and besides, they knew where to find the best pie and the cheapest early-early-bird specials. And so, in his Serge-like way (violently, that is, but with science and style), he would get their money returned, and make sure that nobody scammed his new friends again. Forty-six-year-old Benmont Pinch knew that he was a dinosaur. Most of his colleagues at Life-Armor were Millennials who’d practically been born with computers in their cribs. Benmont, on the other hand, was a numbers guy and that was probably why his employers kept him around: given the information and an hour, there wasn’t a statistic he couldn’t get or an answer he couldn’t tease out. That was apparently more than his younger co-workers could do. This talent never led to a raise, but it did give him opportunities to work with local law officials: they fed him what he needed, and he gave them a statistically-likely-criminal’s name. When dozens

of senior couples along the East Coast were found murdered, though, Benmont couldn’t believe what the stats told him. Their Social Security information had to be all wrong – or was it? Decisions, decisions: start a new mystery tonight, or dig into something funny? Why not have the best of both by layering on “No Sunscreen for the Dead”? For whodunit fans, this novel contains a long, head-scratching, maze-like mystery linked to older Floridians – a side-story that would be too wild in any other novel. Its solution is offered quickly and the why remains to be solved, but don’t work yourself up too much. The real reason for coming to a Serge Storm book is for the zap-paced, profanity-laced, revenge-based humor that’s so outrageous, you gotta laugh. If you’re a fan, you already know that author Tim Dorsey tends to make

his novels something akin to putting a hurricane in a blender. “No Sunscreen for the Dead” is all that but, in what may be the least madcap of the bunch, it’s easier to grasp and might be perfect for series newbies. Mystery or humor book, whichever you want, this one’s got your number. s Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books.
