Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip.

Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself. Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal. Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. <M Maari rily lyyn befo beefo foree, aagge 6 fore 68 8 See Se ee my sto t ryy at Exxce E xce cep pttio i na nalD Den e tiist stry ryy.ccom om

Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place. HAVE A LAUGH

The Month of Blooming

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of April? Perhaps the onset of springtime and warmth coming to cast away winter? Or, do you think of the showers that are sure to bring May flowers? Well, those who named the month of April

must have had similar ideas in mind. The word April originally came from Aprillis, which is derived from the Latin word aperio — a verb meaning “to open.” Here’s to blooming!

THE FIRST IN AMERICA On April 30 in 1789 George Washington, the first president of the United States, was inaugurated into the presidency of the newly formed United States of America. Despite the momentous occasion, George Washington is known for having the shortest inaugural address at only 135 words.

With April Fool’s Day kicking off this month, it’s no surprise that April has also been named Humor Month. To help you celebrate April Fools and Humor Month, here are a few jokes to tell your friends... Q: Why did Johnny throw the clock out of the window? A: Because he wanted to see time fly! Q: What did the policeman say to his belly button? A: You’re under a vest! Q: What do you call a fake noodle? A: An impasta. Q: What did one toilet say to the other toilet? A: You look flushed. Q: What do lawyers wear to court? A: Lawsuits! SOURCE: QUICKFUNNYJOKES.COM

Best of Gainesville AWARD

Gainesville Garden Club’s Marketplace: A fun-filled event featuring local artisans. Saturday, April 13 from 9am - 3pm GGC Clubhouse: 1350 NW 75th St. Gainesville, 32605 Taking place in a beautiful garden setting, the Marketplace focuses on building community and taking care of the planet. The event is a fundraiser for the Gainesville Garden Club (GGC) and a great way to support Gainesville’s local creators. There are two parts to the event: the “Junque in the Trunk” sale happening outside, and the local vendors and artisans both inside and outside who sell upcycled, recycled and vintage products. Stemming from England’s “boot sales,” “Junque in the Trunk” will have gently used gardening, household and craft items sold from the trunks of GGC members’ cars. All proceeds from these sales will go straight back to the GGC nonprofit and the work they do in the community – including seasonal plantings at local medical facilities and schools, donating garden supplies and landscaping for Habitat Women Build homes. The vendors and local artists pay a renter’s fee to the GGC, which will also be used towards work in the community through the club, but the rest of the profits go straight to the vendors and help their businesses grow and allow them to make a difference. Some vendors include potters and fiber artists. There will also be nursery growers, beekeeping information and master gardeners. The event is focused on recycling, up-cycling and repurposing. “It’s an information event, as well as meeting face to face [with] artisans and vendors … they have very unique techniques of how they are recycling fabrics to make their products,” said Barbara Cloud-Weisman, chair and coordinator of the event. “But a big part of it is — [it’s] a fundraiser.” The event will provide a light lunch and baked goods that you can enjoy while you shop. All the vendors and displays will highlight the Gainesville Garden Club’s focus to be “Good Keepers of the Earth.” For more information, visit: ggcfl.org. April 2019

Jack Nicholson APRIL 22, 1937 Jack Nicholson is one of the most prominent American motion-picture actors of his generation. Nicholson’s career has contained some of the most iconic films in Hollywood history, including “Chinatown” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and his role as Jack in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” In 1954, Nicholson moved out to Los Angeles where he worked part-time in a toy store and also landed a job as a gofer for the animation department of MGM Studios. An MGM producer named Joe Pasternak noticed Nicholson’s good looks one day and landed him a spot in Jeff Corey’s famed acting classes, as well as an apprenticeship at The Players Ring Theatre. Nicholson made his film debut in the 1958 low-budget crime flick “Cry Baby Killer,” and his breakthrough performance came as alcoholic Southern lawyer George Hanson in the classic road movie “Easy Rider” (1969). Today, Nicholson has retired from the acting world, but he remains one of the most famous actors of his era. A FEW OTHER NOTABLE

SOIL FOR THE SOUL

Eldergrow The Windsor of Gainesville Receives Top Garden Award

by Emma Witmer

E

ldergrow is helping residents at The Windsor of Gainesville to remember their roots, and keep them watered, of course. If you didn’t know any better when pulling up to The Windsor of Gainesville, you might think you were about to check into a cozy hotel rather than a senior living facility. Past the front desk, through the cafeteria and a few quick turns down the hall, you’ll find a quaint doorway staged to look like a front porch, white picket fence and all. When the doorway opens, the smell of popcorn and fresh herbs wafts out, and you can see a lush raised garden on full display. And why wouldn’t it be? It’s an award winner, after all. The Windsor of Gainesville is one of over 100 senior living facilities across the nation that partner with Eldergrow, a program which, in the words of Eldergrow Founder and CEO Orla Concannon, seeks to “bring mother nature indoors and right into the hands of residents in a meaningful and purposeful way.” Senior living facilities that partner with Eldergrow are given a garden and receive visits from Eldergrow’s “expert educators” twice a month. The purpose of this program is to use gardening to engage all five senses and keep the residents’ minds and hands active. “This is ultimately a therapy program for our communities,” said Kristin Herrington-Albrecht, Curriculum Coordinator and Educator at Eldergrow. “It’s therapeutic horticulture... It’s using the garden and the various aspects of gardening to bring wellness to our residents’ lives.” While Eldergrow educators spend an hour of each two-

12   April 2019

hour visit tending to the garden, day-to-day maintenance is the responsibility of Windsor staff and the residents themselves. To recognize this dedication, Eldergrow gives out the Happiest Healthiest Garden Award each month. With its sprawling flat-leaf oregano and thriving succulents, it’s no surprise that the garden at Windsor received the first Happiest Healthiest Garden Award of 2019. “Windsor of Gainesville was one of our very first communities on the eastern seaboard, so I have a soft spot for it, and I’m really excited that they won that garden award,” Concannon said. “It’s a really lovely opportunity to recognize the residents for nurturing their beautiful garden and the staff of these communities as well.”

“The data and the studies around the wellness benefits are really staggering.” The Eldergrow class at Windsor has about 10 students and sports a cast of characters — from Mr. Bill (the class clown) to Mrs. Jean (the teacher’s pet). Shera Walker, an Eldergrow educator, smiles all the way to her eyes as she bounces around the room with one arm around a pot of purple pansies and another holding a pink polka dot plant during the first class of February. “Who liked to make mud pies when they were little?” Walker asks the group. seniortimesmagazine.com

Windsor of Gainesville is named Eldergrow’s monthly Happiest and Healthiest Garden thanks to the hard work of students, staff and Eldergrow educator Shera Walker.

“All of us!” Mrs. Jean shouted; a response met by a sea of nostalgic laughter. Walker’s high energy is infectious, especially once she introduces the project of the day: Kokedama. Walker passes out seafoam green gloves, and together, she and the class learn this Japanese gardening technique in teams of two. Walker guides the first group as they mix the soil, add water, pack it into a ball, split it in half, add a small plant to the middle and wrap the whole thing in green moss and twine. Group after group repeats the process, and softball-sized hanging plants begin to scatter the table. Many of the residents may appear frail at first glance, but once they stick their hands into the soil you can see a familiarity with the process. They begin to knead the soil with strength all the way from the shoulders. As the lesson continues, the residents sit up straighter, talk amongst each other, laugh and sing. The gardening class at Windsor is a therapeutic sensory garden program geared toward the facility’s “memory care”

patients who suffer from varying degrees of dementia. Concannon has countless stories about patients who have benefited from the program, but the hype isn’t only from stories. A 2006 study by researchers Leon A Simons, Judith Simons, John McCallum and Yechiel Friedlander found that gardening on a daily basis reduced risk factors for dementia by 36%. “The data and the studies around the wellness benefits are really staggering,” Concannon beamed. Eldergrow serves communities across the country, but the program itself is quite young. Concannon launched Eldergrow out of Seattle just three and a half years ago while completing her graduate degree. It was during this time that she recalls getting labeled as “the girl with the passion,” for her zealous appeals for the elderly at business conventions. This passion originated largely due to Concannon’s close relationship with her Irish grandmother, which heightened her awareness to other elders she encountered walking down the street or in the store. In high school, Concannon volunteered seniortimesmagazine.com

with the elderly. Then in college she served as a “friendly visitor” to aging adults, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, joined the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and worked in senior living facilities. “I’ve seen how oftentimes; many people overlook the elderly,” Concannon said. “I felt they were shortchanged in our culture. I really wanted to set out and make a difference and bring awareness to this population.” During her time in various senior living facilities, Concannon was bothered by how often residents were cooped up inside. Whether due to lack of mobility, weather or under-staffing, Concannon couldn’t help but think about how spending time outdoors made her feel recalibrated. This led to her research into the benefits of therapeutic horticulture, and eventually the founding of Eldergrow. “I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface, quite frankly,” Concannon said. “I really hope that we continue to grow, no pun intended.” s

YOU DIG?

Springtime Gardening Tips Six Southern Secrets to Maintaining Your Spring Garden by Emma Witmer With 2019 in full swing and North Central Florida temperatures on the rise, it’s the perfect time to grab your gloves and check-in on your garden. This season is all about new life, so start taking those early steps toward a summer full of fresh veggies and outdoor fun with these spring gardening tips!

START WITH SOIL Before you even think about putting a seed in the ground, it’s crucial to have your soil in order. First, clear out any weeds and old growth remaining from last year to make sure that nothing is getting in the way of your next crop. Once things start warming up, and it’s time to plant, use a till or shovel to loosen up the soil. Next, it’s time to fortify your soil from last year with compost and amendments. If you aren’t sure what your soil needs, use a soil test to determine where your PH or nutrient levels might be lacking.

new seedlings — keep the seeds potted in the house until the low temperatures have moved on. Once your little plants have started to climb their stakes and put out branches, watch out! Often, new smaller branches will start to grow right out of the base of another branch where it connects to the plant. Make sure to pinch these tinier branches off. This practice is commonly known as “suckering” the plant because, if left unattended, the small branch will suck the nutrients away from that big branch that looks almost ready to bloom.

CUT IT OUT Your azaleas just bloomed and it was lovely. Soon though, those blooms will go from pink to brown and cover your front yard. Once the last of your blooms hit the ground, it’s time to go for the clippers. This is the perfect time to prune your azaleas and get them into shape for next year. If you wait too far into summer to prune then say “sayonara” to next year’s flowers.

sure to leave a few on the vine. Once they’ve begun to shrivel, cut them open and dry the seeds on a paper towel. Seal them in a plastic bag and you’ve got peppers to plant next year!

HOWDY HORNWORMS While these pudgy green caterpillars are normally known for their love of tomato plants, hornworms are perfectly happy to ravage your eggplants, potatoes and peppers too. The bright green color of these caterpillars allows them to camouflage well in your garden. While insecticides are an effective option for keeping these pests at bay, try a more natural solution this year. Plant basil, dill or marigolds among your at-risk crops. Not only will these add extra texture to your spring garden, they are also an effective deterrent for this green grub.

Springtime Memories

A

week or so ago I opened the door to a local hardware store and walked smack into one of my favorite childhood memories. In a large tub with a heat lamp fastened above were dozens of baby chickens of assorted colors and breeds. The sales clerk noticed my joy as I gazed at these little creatures, who were peeping to one another and instinctively scratching their bedding looking for food. The clerk proudly told me that they had many different breeds to choose from, and that they would produce uniquely colored eggs. And she also informed me that in our city we are allowed to have up to ten hens in our backyards. That little fact was almost enough to make me whip out the credit card in my wallet and walk out of there with ten baby chicks. I mean, fresh organic eggs are good for a person, right? The way I saw it, I would be doing something good for my health. After the initial impulse, though, reality set in and I realized that not only do I not need ten chickens, but I also do not even have a backyard. I only have a small courtyard in a quaint little village with neighboring homes a few feet away on both sides. I’m pretty sure my neighbors wouldn’t enjoy the clucking of hens, even if there wasn’t a rooster crowing at 5 am. So, I contented myself with standing there drinking in the sights and sounds of my early years and glowing in the happy memories they produced. Springtime at my childhood home was a time of rebirth and beauty. The wildflowers would pop up all over our yard, just

there for the picking, which I did daily. The wildlife animals were having their babies—baby bunnies were nibbling clovers with their mothers, bird nests were being built by industrious bird couples, and even our pets were having offspring as well. We usually had a new litter of kittens or puppies each year. Since my mother was a farmer’s daughter, too, she knew all about raising different kinds of creatures. Her experiences growing up gave her knowledge on raising chickens, ducks, geese and even turkeys. So, it wasn’t unusual that she allowed me to pick out some ducklings and goslings one year. I remember walking into the feed store where a large tub held the babies. The ducklings and goslings were both together in that tub. I loved the noises they made, and the sticky-sweet smell of their feathers, as they busily ate their food and played in their water dish.   I picked out two goslings and two ducklings. I don’t know if it was just luck, but I ended up with a male and female of each. My geese were named “Big Boy” and “Swanee,” and the ducks were named “Boy” and “Girl.” They were raised as babies in a tub in our downstairs kitchen area. We kept them there in the house well into their “teenage” phase when they started growing in their adult feathers. So, of course, I played with them daily and they became quite tame. My mother was one in a million—she allowed me to put newspapers down on the floor for them to roam around on while we played. A favorite game of mine was to walk around our kitchen island with them following me. Halfway through April 2019

19

the game I was following behind them, and they were leading me. When I would hold them on my lap, the geese would wrap their long necks around my shoulder and nibble on the buttons of my blouse. By the time they grew to a size that was large enough to let them outside to explore the outdoors, they were very tame. So tame that they would let me walk up to them and reach down to pet them. But as they grew older, I had to get a little more creative to catch them and have some playtime with my little buddies. Their independence grew with their outdoor experiences, and they weren’t as receptive to playing with me. They had bugs to catch and eat, after all. So, I came up with a clever maneuver to trick them into play time. I would run around the yard, as if I wasn’t even interested in them. Then suddenly I would pretend to stumble, say “Ouch!” real loud as I fell down, and then stay there quietly. Eventually I would hear them speaking to each other

in duck/goose language. To me it sounded as if they were saying, “Oh dear, do you think she really hurt herself? Maybe we should check it out.” Eventually their curiosity got the best of them and as they inched closer, I would reach out and grab them for a hug. They must have not really minded, because they fell for it every time. Another favorite memory I had was at Easter. Hard to imagine in these times, but back then our local five and dime store would have a display of baby chicks front and center just as you walked in their door. Children were allowed to select a baby chick and take it home for free, as a special Easter treat. Since we lived in the country this was perfectly acceptable to my mother, so every time we went in that store, I added another baby chick to the collection. Actually, the chicks we brought home were the lucky ones. We had the knowledge to care for them, as well as the yard and chicken coop to keep them in when they got older. I’m not so sure the other chicks would have the same luck. Back seniortimesmagazine.com

in the 1960s they must have already had the ability to tell the sex of the chick while still in the egg, because every one of those chicks grew up to be roosters! I named them “The Bachelors” and can still remember all the crowing I heard from them each morning. My final memory is of a very special Rhode Island Red hen that was a treasured pet of mine from the age of eight until my sophomore year in high school. Her name was “Fat Stuff” and she was as tame as any lap dog you may have known. I could write an entire Farm Tale about Fat Stuff, and maybe in the future I will. She was a young hen when we rescued her one night on a country road. Some delinquents out for mischief must have been in the car ahead of us; we noticed them toss something out of the car and swerve trying to hit it. My dad immediately stopped our car near the incident, and the delinquents sped off before they could be apprehended. Somehow my mother was able to gently pick up the frightened hen and bring her into our car. I remember my dad saying, “Why, she’s just a spring chicken,” as he shook his head and remarked, “What’s the matter with kids these days?” I guess that’s an on-going theme, back then as well as today. Fat Stuff was so grateful for her rescue, that she became devoted to all of us. Of course, I spent the most time with her, so she was really attached to me. She rewarded us with one brown egg every morning, which she laid in a nest she made in the back of my father’s outboard motor boat parked in our garage. He wasn’t very happy about the location of her nest, but he did enjoy the egg every morning. Fat Stuff had a long life, and many of my happy childhood memories are of my time with her. I always smile when I think of my little red hen. Yes, springtime memories always make me smile. s

Tinseltown Talks Michael Dante: From Actor to Author by Nick Thomas

22   April 2019

I

t’s not uncommon for actors to find a second career away from the camera after spending years in front of it. In Michael Dante’s case, that new vocation has been writing, beginning with his 2014 award-winning autobiography “From Hollywood to Michael Dante Way” (michaeldanteway.com). “I received the Ella Dickey Literacy Award for it last April in Marshfield, Missouri, at their Cherry Blossom Festival,” Dante said. “My second book, ‘Winterhawk’s Land,’ is the sequel to the film I starred in and played the title role, ‘Winterhawk.’” His latest Novella is called “Six Rode Home,” which he said is “about six horse soldiers who come home from the Civil War and it’s a great read.” Dante is well acquainted with early American life through his films, which includes working alongside Audie Murphy in two westerns. “Audie was the greatest American hero of World War II, but never talked about his war experience,” Dante said. “He was a very quiet, sensitive, and soft-spoken guy with a great sense of humor who also wrote beautiful poetry and song lyrics.” Dante’s first film was the 1956 bio-drama “Somebody Up There Likes Me” starring Paul Newman as boxer Rocky Graziano and featured Steve McQueen in his first role. During filming, a truck lost control when its brakes failed and hurtled towards the cast causing Newman to leap out of the way and sending a cameraman flying. “Then it headed towards me and Steve – I pulled him out of the way.” In “Kid Galahad,” another boxing film, Dante sparred with Elvis Presley. He says the two performed all the fight scenes themselves, with Presley landing a blow on Dante, cutting his lip. “He kept apologizing over and over,” he recalled, laughing. On television, Dante created a memorable character in the original 1967 “Star Trek” episode “Friday’s Child,” where the Enterprise crew visits an alien planet and attempts to negotiate mineral rights with a local tribe. His character, Maab, was dressed head-to-foot in a stiflingly hot costume.

“The exterior shots were filmed at Vazquez Rocks, near Santa Clarita, California, where it was 117 degrees,” Dante said. “So much perspiration drained into my boots that I squished when I walked – I lost 7 lbs on the first day of shooting!” With over 180 television and film roles to his credit, Dante remains astonished that his 50-year-old “Star Trek” role still draws wide fan attention, recalling an encounter during a trip seniortimesmagazine.com

unState Federal Credit Union and Dawn Realty know that bringing authors and musicians to Gainesville is a great idea. That’s why both have donated $1,000 each to help bring special programming to the Alachua County Library District for the community. The donations will specifically fund the second concert of the Library’s Music Series on March 24 and support a special author event to be scheduled for late summer. These events help further the Library District’s mission of building a better community by creating opportunities to participate, connect and discover. An extension of SunState’s support of these events is the individual commitment by Dawn Realty’s David Nicholson, who serves as a volunteer on the Credit Union’s board of directors. “Partnering with the library in providing special programs is a natural extension of who we are – your local credit union,” said Robert Hart, SunState’s Vice President of Marketing.

WIND BENEATH MY WINGS

Take Flight The Alachua Audubon Society Allows Birds to Thrive through Connection and Conservation by Steph Strickland Alachua County has a rich history of connecting people to the natural world. In 2020 the Alachua Audubon Society, a group committed to the conservation and observation of local bird and wildlife populations, will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in the area. However, their impact on birding and the environment of North Central Florida will extend for even longer than that. The first notable connection between man and the wildlife of Alachua occurred in 1886, when pioneer Frank M. Chapman began exploring the scenery of Gainesville and recording his thoughts. Chapman spent most of his time exploring the Alachua Lake, which he said seemed “alive with the sound of birds.” By the end of his trip to Gainesville, which at this time had a reputation as a health resort, he had documented 149 species of birds in Alachua. The area also became home to several other conservationists and bird enthusiasts, including T. Gilbert Pearson. Pearson was a friend to Chapman and an ornithologist who lived in Archer for a brief period and conducted field research in Micanopy. Today, there are over 900 active bird-loving members of the Alachua Audubon Society. This local chapter of the National Audu-

26   April 2019

bon Society is well known for the numerous excursions and activities it hosts for both members and the public at no cost. Activities include Family Birding Trails, Wednesday Bird Walks, Zen Birding, Birds and Brew as well as numerous classes and field trips. Two years ago, Debbie Segal became president of the Alachua Audubon Society. She first became a member over two decades earlier, with a goal to continue connecting the world with the bountiful nature in Alachua County. Segal is passionate about the protection and observation of the hundreds of bird species in the area. “I just love getting out and seeing birds – it’s exciting,” she said. Segal has served several other board positions leading up to her role as president, and she feels the 18 board members that serve the Alachua Audubon Society are the ones who keep the largest Audubon chapter in Florida running smoothly. The staff at the Alachua Audubon Society are always working to continue to grow its conservation and community efforts. Visitors can expect to see expansions of current programs, as well as newer programs like efforts to develop bird banding stations and monitoring programs to better track local bird behaviors.

Sandhill cranes, which feed on frogs, small fish and snakes, had to disperse from Paynes Prairie due to a period of record rainfall since 2017 that resulted in the return of Alachua Lake. These birds need a wide-open space of approximately one-half mile to be able to spot approaching predators, and they do not like trees. Hundreds of cranes each day feed at the UF/IFAS experimental beef cattle pasture near Williston Road. In normal years, when the prairie is dry, hundreds of cranes feed and roost on the prairie.

The Kestrel Nest Box Program, which led to the creation of over 130 bird boxes such as the one pictured here, is being revitalized this year. Members of the Alachua Audubon Society are working to fix older boxes and install new ones so the organization can properly observe local species.

Through the many projects and excursions the Alachua Audubon Society is working on, they hope to spread education and awareness to locals. “We’re trying to cater to the entire community,” Segal said. One major project that the organization will be working on in 2019 is a partnership with the City of High Springs, this plan is focused on designing a wetland similar to others in Gainesville. The new space will allow for wastewater treatment, and wildlife would be able to take advantage of habitat expansion. Segal reached out to representatives to obtain permission to open this space to the public once completed as an additional

North Florida destination for birding and wildlife observation. The Alachua Audubon is also passionate about observation and conservation. On December 16, a group of experienced birders embarked on the annual Christmas Bird Count. They recorded bird sightings within a 15-mile radius centered over Paynes Prairie, and this year’s count found 177 unique species within that area. Segal, an environmental scientist by training, believes observing bird populations is the best way of learning about the state of the environment. “I’ve seen the very visible decline in environmental quality – birds are a very good indicator of the state of the environment,” she said. seniortimesmagazine.com

The last county list shows 362 unique bird species in the local area, reinforcing the fact that Alachua has become a hub for wildlife and ecotourism in North Florida. In 2018, the Alachua Audubon Society was awarded the Best Chapter Award – for a chapter larger than 500 people – by the Florida Audubon. The Alachua chapter was recognized for their extensive work in the community including: new internship and scholarship opportunities, new programs and countless partnerships with local organizations to improve the relationship between locals and wildlife. Michael Brock, a board member for the Alachua Audubon, has always taken an active interest in birding and wildlife observation. When he heard about the activities hosted by the Alachua Audubon, he decided it would be worth checking out. Brock said that the interest and genuine curiosity of both leaders and members of the group are what sparked him to stay. “They were excited about everything… it’s an extremely welcoming environment,” he said. Brock especially appreciates how inviting the Alachua Audubon is to all levels of birders. From beginners to experts, Brock encourages locals to come out and continue learning about the natural world. The educational side of birding and the environment is another key tenet of this organization. In addition to provid-

ing educational bird walks, activities and classes, the Alachua Audubon Society also works diligently to observe and track local bird populations. By tracking these populations through devices, such as their nest boxes with “spy cams” attached, the organization is able to understand movements, find rare birds in the area and share this information with the local community. With the purpose of educating and inspiring the community, the chapter’s website also features the best local birding locations, birding calendars and checklists, as well as information on what to do with an injured bird. One exciting discovery for members of the Alachua Audubon was the sighting of a Snail Kite in March of 2018, and the subsequent discovery of additional nests and population growth in the area. This was a significant sighting because this species is threatened and especially rare to see in North Florida. Through the efforts of organizations like the Alachua Audubon, these types of species remain protected in the area and their homes and habitats are too. Moments like these excite and inspire Segal and the rest of the members of the Alachua Audubon to continue their work in conservation. “By protecting birds, we are protecting the Earth,” Segal said. s For a full list of Alachua Audubon programs, local birding information and a calendar of events, visit: www.alachuaaudubon.org.

We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

ROUGH MAGIC April 12 – 19 When characters from Shakespeare and classic Greek drama engage with a nerdy student dramaturg and a Coney Island lifeguard, magic abounds in what the Ithaca Journal called “an adventure more original than anything Hollywood has done in years…” Prospero is trying to recover his magic and the chain reaction results in acts of heroism and romance that threaten the destruction of Manhattan. Written by Roberto AguirreSacasa, this epic adventure influenced by action movies, comic books, and the magic of theatre combines characters from classical plays with contemporary settings. seniortimesmagazine.com

Embracing Life The Gecko Invasion

It is too late to secure Florida’s borders, we have already been invaded. Walls, weapons or wiretaps will not save us from the terror created from these trespassers. Recently, I went to war with uninvited geckos who thought my garage was their guest room. My saga began by opening an exterior door and facing a humongous lizard. Once I recovered from shock, he appeared innocent and somewhat cute. Maybe the lizard, with extraordinary large eyes, was there for an afternoon insect snack. Thinking it might be a winwin situation, I left him alone. The odd-looking lizard, with large finger-like feet, quickly homesteaded. We became accustomed to each other’s presence and were no longer startled during our daily encounters. Regrettably, I named the ravenous reptile. He became known as Ryan. The trouble began when Ryan got a little too cozy and started signaling his friends. I began hearing unusual, sort of barking or chirping, noises at night. Later I learned these sounds were his way of communicating. He may have been courting females or warning predators. Whatever Ryan was vocalizing, he successfully extended the welcome mat – gecko style. Almost immediately, a lady gecko arrived and laid eggs behind storage

boxes. Within a week another couple set up housekeeping. My garage must have been a gecko haven, as their population continued to grow. The line was crossed when they began eliminating long feces with white tips anywhere they felt the need. In order to reclaim my territory, I knew an unpleasant skirmish was imminent. Ryan and comrades had to go. To properly prepare for combat, I turned to Google for answers. Quickly I discovered that these creatures are not native Floridians but are here due to irresponsible pet traders. My initial instinct was correct. They do dine on spiders and other bugs, but basically become unwelcome pests. My first quest was to find gentle ways to evict geckos. Strategically placing eggshells, garlic cloves, onions and/or mothballs supposedly scares them away. I began with this benevolent method, which proved partially successful. Some members of the compound left, others simply relocated to another part of ‘their’ garage. After enduring aging eggshells and rotting onions for an extended period of time, I began assembling more powerful forms of ammunition. Just prior to commencing a second ambush, an unexpected miracle occurred – a home remodeling project. The garage became ground zero. Chemicals, construction workers and crowded

noisy conditions interfered with the serene gecko setting. One critter met its fate when it crossed paths with a circular saw. What may seem a sad event, saved Ryan and friends. They moved on. Dr. Kenneth Krysko earned his PH.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida. Krysko called Florida a cesspool for introduced species and reported that Florida has a bigger problem than anywhere in the world. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service agrees. Florida is a hub for international marketing and travel. Global trading and ideal climate conditions contribute to our sewer status. Our ecosystems and indigenous genera are suffering. Rebekah Pettit, wrote in an article, “Florida’s Invasive Reptiles,” that invasive species are the second leading cause of worldwide extinction. Native varieties evolve over time, adapt and belong in their environment. Unfortunately, they do not know how to defend themselves to the sudden assault of invasive species. Therefore, the invaders often out compete the locals for food and shelter. The infiltration of those invaders is almost always caused by human carelessness. These abandoned creatures are only trying to survive. Yet, the locals are worth protecting. If not, we will continue to see our native species go from threatened, to endangered or extinct. Perhaps my gecko experience was to illustrate this quandary. Should we implement stiffer penalties for irresponsible pet traders? We certainly must promote the removal of non-native invaders. If we want to protect our delicate ecosystems and preserve Florida’s unique environment, these initiatives are imperative. s Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

American Pop: A Novel SNOWDEN WRIGHT c.2019, Wm. Morrow $26.99 / $33.50 Canada, 386 pages

ook out stomach, here it comes.   Oh, how you anticipate that first swallow of great-grandma’s recipe, the one with the secret ingredient you know but you’re not telling. True, you might share that secret someday but in the meantime, as in the new novel “American Pop” by Snowden Wright, be careful what you spill. Fiona Forster wondered how well she really knew her husband, Tewksbury. When she married him before they

came to America, he told her he was a doctor. She believed him then but as she lay on the wooden floor of their cabin, she had her doubts. If he was a doctor, then why didn’t he ease her labor pains? Tewksbury was a doctor – and he was enterprising. When he realized that potions he’d had back in Scotland could cure patients in America, too, he set up a small shop in their Mississippi Delta town, and it flourished. By the time his son, Houghton, was old enough to run the place, the shop had begun to serve refreshments. Houghton always said that he came up with the delicious drink that everyone was talking about, all because of Annabelle. He’d fallen in love with her the minute he saw her but winning her hand was no easy feat. Annabelle’s family had money and her father wasn’t about to let his only child marry a soda jerk. But Houghton was no mere soda jerk. He was the creator of Panola Cola, so-named after the Mississippi county where it started. Houghton alone carried the recipe in his head. He was patriarch to his adult children: eldest son Monty, a heartsick veteran destined for politics but mourning a devastating loss; Harold, who’d had an unfortunate accident as a boy; and twins, Ramsey and Lance, both holding a secret oozing with jealousy. Houghton never wanted his children to want, but a little hardship made them ready for the future. One day, one of them would take control of Panola Cola, and he’d reveal the secret of his recipe at that time. Until then, he’d keep a cap on it… Imagine, if you will, a nighttime soap opera written in bathtub gin, narrated by

Burl Ives with snark and a side dish of history. Imagine that it makes you snort just before tearing your heart out and ruthlessly crumpling it. That’s “American Pop.” Taking readers to the mid-19th-century, through elegant speakeasies, Hollywood movie studios, and two wars, to the mid-1980s and back, author Snowden Wright tells a witty tale of a prosperous and proper Southern family with fangs, claws, and tender souls. Of course, that can be humorous but Wright won’t let you laugh for long: while this novel is about a handful of main characters, other Forsters move

in and out of chapters with anger and well-meaning, leaving pain as sharp as busted glass. Grab this book and be prepared to feel all fizzy inside. Grab it, but leave the bookmarks at home; you won’t need ‘em. You’ll be too tempted to read “American Pop” in one long gulp. s Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books. seniortimesmagazine.com
