Would you like to experience the beneďŹ ts of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip. Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.

Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.

Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.

Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place.

Queen of the Gods The month of June is said to be named after Juno, the wife of Jupiter and queen of the gods (the Roman equivalent of Hera in Greek mythology). June was held sacred to her, and also thought by the Romans to be the luckiest month for marriage — since Juno was the goddess of marriage. Wherever the goddess went she was attended by her messenger Iris (the Rainbow), who journeyed so quickly through the air that she was seldom seen, but after she had passed there was often left in the sky the radiant trail of her highly-colored robe

Embracing Life Psychiatric Help 5¢

L

ucille van Pelt is the best-known psychiatrist in my lifetime. She was created by Charles Schulz for (what would eventually develop into) the most influential comic strip of its day, “Peanuts.” Schulz commenced publication of “Peanuts” on October 2, 1950. Lucy debuted in 1952 and began her clinical practice in 1959. I was five-years-old when the infamous Psychiatric Help 5¢ sign (attached to the lemonade-style stand) first appeared. Sometime that year my father introduced me to Charlie Brown and Lucy. Dad was an avid reader of the newspaper, including the comic’s section; which he called the funnies. His enthusiasm rubbed off and I followed the Peanuts gang until their creator passed in 2000. My admiration for Schulz was recently reinforced. Seeing the musical, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” brought back a boatload of memories – both good and bad. At this point, I must state the importance of psychiatry. It is of vital necessity and not a joke. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Victims of mental illnesses face the devastating stigma associated with their ailments. It is an invisible disease that too many employers, insurance companies and society (in general) still

10

June 2018

consider unsubstantiated. Oftentimes once a patient begins therapy, their condition is tremendously difficult to treat; equivalent to stagefour cancer. Three years ago, our family experienced this tragedy. My handsome, intelligent, successful, 35-year-old nephew took his own life after losing his personal battle with depression. Regular readers of my column know that I am an advocate for education, research and treatment of mental illnesses. One thing I learned along the way, is that humor is good for the soul. Therefore, today I have an even greater appreciation of how Schulz presented his evolving tale. He masterfully incorporated comedy with serious social interactions and relationships. The story centered around the antics of a group of average neighborhood children. Interesting to note (especially during the time of the strip’s fame), is that the adults were rarely seen or heard. Charlie Brown, the main character, appeared to have a caring family. He was considerate and intelligent but lacked self-confidence. By many childhood standards, his life was a mess. After investing an immense amount of energy managing a baseball team, they consistently experienced devastating losses. Good Grief, the poor lad could not even fly a kite or kick a football. Lucy (his supposed friend,

responsible for holding the football) always pulled it away at the last second. Lucy was not just a bit crotchety, but a bad brutal bully. She mocked her little brother, Linus, (for loving his blanket and sucking his thumb) and was aggressive to anyone who got in her way. Lucy’s love-life was pitiful. Schroeder, her crush, was an aloof musician who simply ignored her attempts to get his attention. Schroeder said he would not marry her, “For all the beagles in Beagleland.” Moreover, she was a terrible baseball player. Lucy was traded to Peppermint Patty’s team and later (temporarily) kicked off altogether. That never slowed her from fighting fiercely with Charlie Brown, as he attempted to coach from the pitcher’s mound. Even with all of her personal struggles, she maintained high self-esteem and opened her private psychiatry practice. Over the decades, Lucy treated Charlie Brown, Snoopy (Charlie Brown’s beagle), Woodstock (a bird) and her playmates. The psychiatry stand was open for business when the two-sided sign indicated, The Doctor Is In. She offered guidance and psychoanalysis to anyone who had a nickel. Obviously, her therapy was almost always worthless. Lucy’s typical advice was simply, “Snap out of it! Five cents, please.” “Peanuts” reached its pinnacle of popularity in the 1960s. The strip was syndicated in 2600+ newspapers, had 355 million readers in 75 countries and was translated into 21 languages. Lucy is memorialized in reruns of the comic strip, movies and musicals. Thank you, Charles Schulz, for bringing attention to a complex serious human issue. s Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

Brighter Lipstick, Bigger Earrings Bringing Cheerful Confidence to Cancer Patients

by Savannah Austin

O

n Feb. 24, 2014, less than a month before her 60th birthday, Pam Sawyer got the news. She had stage 3 breast cancer. One week later, her husband Henry, a prostate cancer survivor, was told he had bladder cancer. If there had ever been a moment in their lives where they could have abandoned hope, thrown in the towel and set up camp in the land of despair, it was then. No one would have blamed the Winter Springs couple for wanting to give up. Yet, their attitude was simply, “Okay, what is our treatment and when are our doctors appointments?” On the first day before she started a five-hour session on the third floor of the Cancer Institute of Florida, one of her oncology nurses, Kim, looked at her and said, “Pam, you’ll be just fine as long as you wear brighter lipstick and bigger earrings.” The words of her nurse and the love communicated through a handmade hat given to her by another patient resonated with Sawyer during the 18 weeks of chemotherapy. In an effort to keep herself busy, she resolved to “make lemons out of lemonade” and create handmade earrings for other patients going through chemotherapy with her. Thus, “Brighter Lipstick, Bigger Earrings, Inc.” (BLBE), was born, and the first of over 34,000 earrings that would be given out over the next several years were placed in the hands of Kim, the oncology nurse. “I think [Kim] was thrilled that somebody took it to heart and really was listening to her advice. That’s really what it is – to make the best of a bad situation,” Sawyer said. “We’re just trying to inject positivity into the world of cancer.”

12

June 2018

Sawyer’s husband, now 69, underwent treatment for six weeks and was pronounced cancer-free, and Sawyer endured the summer of chemotherapy, then surgery in September when she was pronounced cancer-free, followed by radiation until January 2016 to ensure her cancer wouldn’t return. In the beginning of BLBE, Sawyer was still teaching high school English, but she would work on her handmade earrings with her friends in her spare time and leave them in a basket in an Altamonte Springs infusion center. However, the system evolved after she reached out to an old high school friend, Jodi Jones Knauf, who lived in Clearwater, Florida, and had been fighting cancer for eight years.

“We’re just trying to inject positivity into the world of cancer.” Knauf came up with the idea to hang earrings on small Christmas trees like ornaments, and started to do so at the infusion center in Clearwater. Inspired by this, Sawyer went to her local Hobby Lobby and bought all of the pink trees in stock. “[Jodi] had a lot to do with the look that we have now,” Sawyer said. “Without her tree idea, I would still be putting these in baskets.” seniortimesmagazine.com

13

June 2018

13 13

14

14

Knauf passed away in 2015, but Sawyer knows she would be so proud to see how far her ideas went. BLBE now has earring trees in about 18 infusion centers across the state, including UF Health Shands hospitals and even satellite locations in Pittsburgh, Houston and Atlanta. Sawyer’s trees came to Gainesville through the UF Pre-Dental Society, led by former president, 22-year-old Carson Smith. Smith knew Sawyer through his mom back home in Orlando, and started partnering with BLBE when the Pre-Dental club was looking for a service project. The society now regularly hosts earring-making parties to practice fine motor skills and to give back to five infusion centers in town. Sawyer travels frequently to Gainesville to help teach the students and help with earring making workdays, Smith said. “From the very start, [Sawyer] was just so energetic and always welcoming,” he said. “You can see her love for teaching coming out.” Beyond Gainesville, the earrings are delivered to greater Orlando infusion centers by Sawyer and a core group of 25 women known as the earring angels who meet weekly to create jewelry from beads and other materials. The angels come in shifts, with some arriving in the morning and others right after lunch in the afternoon. “I’m a former teacher, and I actually have the beads in a seating chart,” Sawyer said. “Everything is very organized for my earring angels every time they come.” Joan Fiegel, 67, was one of the first two people to help Sawyer with BLBE and she still comes every week to help make earrings. The two have been friends for 21 years, after they

14

June 2018

15

both moved into the same neighborhood in Winter Springs. When Sawyer got her diagnosis, it was dreadful, Fiegel said. “But she never said anything negative about it. She was positive from the beginning, ‘Okay, I’ve got cancer. What do I need to do?’ … And then she fought the battle,” Fiegel explained. When Sawyer decided to start BLBE, Fiegel was right there. “Pam was making some earrings on her own at first, and one day she said ‘Do you want to come over and make some earrings?’” Fiegel said. “Once we caught on, it’s like we couldn’t stop.” Now, her dining room table is full of earring-making supplies where she also works on them at home. She said she has a pair for just about every outfit, which have become almost like little advertisements for the organization. “It’s just a wonderful, very fulfilling group,” Fiegel said. “I’m hoping that it’s making a difference with women across the states and country the way we hope it is.” Karen Meglio, 68, is another longtime friend of Sawyer who has been with BLBE for almost two and a half years. Their friendship started 30 years prior, when their sons played baseball together in high school and they were neighbors. Eventually, Meglio moved away to the Villages, but kept in touch. One night, she and her husband met with the Sawyers and

another couple in Mount Dora, Florida, and by the end of the dinner, Sawyer had talked her into starting the earring-making movement where she lived. Now, Meglio meets with her own group of earring angels twice a month in the Villages to supply the local infusion centers and brighten the treatment days for patients. “Because she called it Brighter Lipstick, Bigger Earrings, some of these earrings are pretty big,” Meglio said. It helps to take the emphasis off of the bald heads of patients and give them a boost of confidence. “It just brightens their day that somebody cared enough about them to make them these earrings,” Meglio said. Sawyer stays as busy as she did when she was working full-time, from making earrings to working with fundraisers and doing speaking engagements, which she finds have helped BLBE grow by spreading the word. As her movement expands, Sawyer leads BLBE with fierce positivity into a legacy of helping others make the best of a bad situation. “I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished since 2014 … It’s much broader than I ever, ever imagined. When I started with that one little basket, I never would have thought in my wildest dreams that this would’ve happened,” Sawyer said. “I don’t see ending it any time soon.” s

Healthy Edge Annual Wellness Visits

D

id you know that Medicare pays for Annual Wellness Visits? Annual Wellness Visits are much more than routine “physical check-ups.” If you take advantage of the Annual Wellness Visit, you can benefit from the Healthy Edge they provide for years to come. The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is a great way to help your provider and you develop a prevention plan tailored for YOU. Annual Wellness Visits help pinpoint what health improvements you need to make. They also identify the medical, health education, and community services or support that you need to use so that you get better with age. The Annual Wellness Visit is not a routine physical checkup that you get from your provider. It goes far beyond what is accomplished during a physical exam. The Annual Wellness Visit is a way for your provider to determine your: • Physical health status • Nutrition • Potential risk factors for depression and other mood disorders • Ability to successfully perform activities of daily living (ADLs). • Fall and injury risks • Hearing function • Cognitive function (Your provider will observe you to determine if you are at risk for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia) • Home safety factors

16

June 2018

WHAT ARE THE ANNUAL WELLNESS VISIT COMPONENTS? At a Medicare Annual Wellness visit, your health professional will have you complete a Health Risk Assessment (HRA). The HRA is the initial step in the creation of your personalized prevention plan. To help your provider (and you) come up with your personalized multiyear health plan, the HRA gathers your following information: • Demographic data • Self-assessment of health status • Psychosocial risks • Behavioral risks • Activities of Daily Living • Instrumental ADLs (This includes shopping, housekeeping, managing own medications, and handling finances.) To develop your personalized plan, your provider also needs from you: • Family medical history • Past medical and surgical history (This includes your experiences with illnesses, hospital stays, operations, allergies, injuries, and treatments.) • Behavioral health history (This includes your experiences with depression or other mood disorders.) • Medication and supplement history (What medications and supplements do you use or are exposed to? This includes calcium and vitamins.)

In addition to measurements such as height, weight, body mass index (or waist circumference), and blood pressure, your provider will do other routine measurements that are appropriate based on your medical and family history. WHO CAN GET A MEDICARE ANNUAL WELLNESS VISIT? If you have Medicare, you are eligible for an Annual Wellness Visit if you: • Are no longer within 12 months after the effective date of your first Medicare Part B coverage period. • Have not had either an Initial Preventive Physical Examination (IPPE)/ Welcome to Medicare Preventive Visit within the past 12 months. You cannot receive your Annual Wellness Visit within the same year as your IPPE or Welcome to Medicare preventive visit. Medicare pays for your first Annual Wellness Visit and one visit each year thereafter. HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR MY ANNUAL WELLNESS VISIT? Want to impress your provider? Go to your visit prepared with the following information: • Any medical records you have, including immunization records. • Family health history in as much detail as possible. • A full list of medications and supplements, including calcium and vitamins – how often and how much of each is taken. • A full list of your current providers and suppliers. erbert Swanson has a lot of things on his mind these days: the surprise disappearance of his beard hair, the fact that all food tastes like metal, if he will ever have the strength to ride his motorcycle again and whether the pneumonia he is battling will hinder his larger fight with small cell lung cancer. The one thing he does not have to worry about, since signing up with the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Road To Recovery program, is how he will travel to and from the many medical appointments that will hopefully cure him of the cancer that has come his way.

“I’m just getting started on treatments and didn’t know how I would get to all my appointments. I can’t walk as far as a bus stop and a local van service would cost me 60 dollars round trip.” The ACS’s Road To Recovery program offers cancer patients prompt, free transportation to and from their cancer-related treatments, with screened volunteer drivers who sign up online and are trained and ready to help when friends and family members cannot. “My girlfriend is a home healthcare LPN and can’t just take time off to drive me around,” Swanson said during a recent interview at his Gainesville home. “I’m just getting started on treatments and didn’t know how I would get to all my appointments. I can’t walk as far as a bus stop and a local van service would cost me 60 dollars round trip.”

When Bhupati “Lava” Lavakumar retired and was looking for a way to give service, he felt that a cause related to cancer “chose itself” as a way to honor a friend who lost her battle with the disease. The American Cancer Society’s Road To Recovery Program was a perfect fit, given the flexibility it offers volunteers in scheduling, time and travel. Lavakumar now finds great satisfaction and fulfillment in helping cancer patients receive the treatments they need to heal, and even serves as an ambassador to help recruit other volunteer drivers.

Every week Richard Tanner receives a friendly email reminder from the American Cancer Society, letting him know that driving opportunities are available in his area. Tanner, a cancer survivor himself, knows firsthand how grueling the treatment travel schedule can be. He also has the perspective many of his riders find comforting. No experience is required to be a Road to Recovery volunteer and there’s no pressure either. Just appreciation.

Swanson’s supplemental insurance does cover some travel costs for medical appointments - a fact he greatly appreciates - but only covers a limited amount of trips per year. With an aggressive treatment plan for an aggressive form of cancer in his near future, Swanson knows he will need far more rides than his insurance includes. After being encouraged by a radiology nurse during a recent consultation, Swanson filled out the necessary forms to receive no-cost services from the ACS program. Ten minutes

after a follow-up phone call, he had vital rides lined up for several appointments. Ready to transport Swanson to an April chemotherapy treatment was Road To Recovery volunteer, Bhupati “Lava” Lavakumar, a retired Gainesville pharmaceutical sales representative who, over the past three years, has given almost 250 rides to local cancer patients. After spotting Swanson’s request for a ride on Road To Recovery’s website, Lavakumar signed up to help, since the seniortimesmagazine.com

It usually only takes about two weeks and requires a reliable, insured vehicle, a good driving record, completion of a 90-minute online training course, and a few hours of free time during medical office hours.

“Road To Recovery has been a godsend. I mean, what else am I going to do? If I don’t have a ride, I have to miss my treatment.” “If someone enjoys helping other people, they will definitely enjoy being a Road To Recovery volunteer,” Tanner said. Lavakumar shares the same sentiment and hopes volunteers will set aside their concerns and apply. “I would tell them not to worry or be hesitant to do this. Everyone involved here is so grateful. Cancer does something to a person; it changes their perspective. No one takes anything for granted.” Herbert Swanson certainly does not. “Originally, when I thought about arranging transportation, I figured I’d cross that bridge when my insurance coverage for travel ran out and I came to it,” Swanson said. “Road To Recovery has been a godsend. I mean, what else am I going to do? If I don’t have a ride, I have to miss my treatment.” And who needs to have that on their mind when fighting a life-threatening illness? s To become a Road To Recovery volunteer, or to request a ride as a cancer patient, contact the American Cancer Society at 1.800.227.2345. Unable to ride his beloved motorcycle at this point in his treatment for small cell lung cancer, Gainesville resident Herbert Swanson was referred to the ACS’s Road To Recovery program by a radiology nurse. Swanson said the volunteer rides are “a godsend” as even his supplemental insurance that covers some transportation comes up short with all the trips required by his frequent and numerous cancer treatments.

KINDNESS & CARE

Nurse Ginny Virginia Bruzzese Receives Recognition for Her Patient Care and Outreach Efforts

Story and Photography by Stephanie Richards

A

n infectious smile, compassionate spirit, and tender heart. These three things describe Virginia Bruzzese, R.N., a nurse who impacts the lives of students and patients through the UF Mobile Outreach Clinic. The 63-year-old Melrose resident gained notable recognition earlier this year as the recipient of Gainesville Magazine’s Spirit of Gainesville Award for Medicine. She was nominated for the award by Dr. Nancy Hardt, who was a previous recipient of the award and started the UF Mobile Outreach Clinic. “I have great admiration for Dr. Hardt,” she said. “It was an incredible honor to have her nominate me.” Bruzzese’s path to nursing began in her hometown of Pittsburgh when she graduated from South Side Hospital School of Nursing in 1976. She moved to the St. Petersburg/Tampa area four years later, looking for a change from the cold weather of the north. In 1988, she relocated to Gainesville to further her education at the University of Florida, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in health education. “The first half of my 42-year career was spent in labor and delivery,” she said. “The second half has been in public health.” Faith has played a central influence in Bruzzese’s career and life. “I have a strong faith and God has really blessed me with an incredible life. My parents raised me to live by the Golden Rule… ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,’” she said. “I strongly believe if you treat people with kindness and care, they respond. I think sharing my personal experiences makes a difference too. Every morning, I pray that when I go to work there will be an opportunity to

24

serve and impact lives. If I do that for one person, it has been a successful day. Some days, I go home and read a note from a student on how they learned to really care for people … that’s food for my soul.” Her tender heart for patients and students is also reflected in her personal life. As a single parent, she has loved 35 foster care children and adopted five boys. “My heart has always been for mothers and babies,” Bruzzese said. “God gave me five boys, now ages 9 to 19, and I celebrate that. Some of my boys have special needs and I may need to retire early to care for them. I love my job, but it may be a new season of life for me.”

“I love working with the students and showing them what healthcare really looks like. It is more than knowing medical facts or about disease and care; it is also about treating people with kindness and respect.” “Nurse Ginny,” as she is affectionately called, has been with the clinic since its inception nine years ago. She was working at Alachua General Hospital and it was closing in the fall of 2008. Bruzzese was on the Board for Healthy Families and she met Dr. Hardt, who was doing research for the university on the impact of the hospital’s closure on residents of Gainesville’s east side. Bruzzese was the former director of the Mom Mobile, a UF seniortimesmagazine.com

grant funded program that brought prenatal care to women in area counties in the 1990s. Ironically, the same bus was being put back in service for the clinic. “There was a need for easy access to medical care for residents of the community. Dr. Hardt talked about the clinic idea at a board meeting and I told her after that I was interested in being a part of it,” she said. “I already knew how to drive the bus, empty sewage and fill the tanks.” The UF Mobile Outreach Clinic brings free medical care to under-served people in low-income neighborhoods and rural areas in the Alachua County area. The large bus has two exam rooms and can be found parked on a weekly basis at various locations, including the downtown library, T.B. McPherson Center and GRACE Marketplace. Appointments can be scheduled online (local libraries assist with this), but walk-in patients are also welcome. “We have six UF students for each shift [mostly undergraduate] who are ‘care coordinators.’ We partner them with patients through the exam and care process,” Bruzzese said. “Their interaction with patients may be ongoing for a length of time if they suffer from chronic diseases, such as hypertension or diabetes. Students follow-up their visits with phone calls to see how they are doing.” After a check of vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate, patients are also screened for social determinants to healthcare, such as economic and food issues. “It is tough to stay healthy when you have no control over these issues,” Bruzzese said. “The larger exam room is used for women’s

26

health exams and the hospital recently purchased ultrasound equipment. We are now working with the radiology department to make it available in the future as a service.” There is a central station and lab area, where tests and paperwork can be processed as well as a bathroom. Along with Bruzzese, the clinic is staffed with two nurse practitioners that share time, and the six UF student “care coordinators” for each of the two shifts. A host of healthcare professionals, from medical and pharmacy doctors to social workers, also volunteer their time at the clinic. “We usually see patients who need a physical and may be transient or in-between insurance coverage. We also have patients who have need for immediate care, like an ear infection, or may have run out of medication and need a doctor’s prescription,” she said. “Younger patients may need urgent care treatment for colds, ear infections or sexually transmitted diseases. Our largest population is the 40 to 65-year-olds who are seeing increased health issues and may be uninsured due to a job without benefits.” On a recent day, 67-year-old Norman stopped by the Clinic and praised the free services provided as well as its role as a teaching model for students. “The UF Mobile Health Clinic provides an unbelievable, innovative program. They help people in need and provide training for students on how to really serve and care for people. These are future doctors and nurses and they gain so much from the experience,” said the Gainesville resident, who moved from the Tampa Bay area earlier this year. “I just happened to find out seniortimesmagazine.com

27

about it when I was at the main library branch. It is a convenient way to receive care.” While the service positively impacts the lives of area residents, Bruzzese agrees it has a broader reach in shaping healthcare providers of the future. “I love working with the students and showing them what healthcare really looks like. It is more than knowing medical facts or about disease and care; it is also about treating people with kindness and respect,” she said. “You don’t just start by asking questions [about their health]. You get to know the patient by finding out things like how their day has been so far… it establishes trust.” Bruzzese strongly encourages retirees to explore the possibility of making an impact for the community by volunteering time to the Mobile Outreach Clinic. “It really is the perfect volunteer opportunity. For example, one of our volunteers works a few days a month, and we have a physician that takes the summer off and gives his time in other seasons,” she said. “You can still enjoy retirement and volunteer; we are always looking for nurses, doctors, physician assistants, etc.” s For more information on the UF Mobile Outreach Clinic, call 352.273.5329 or go to: outreach.med.ufl.edu

Tinseltown Talks Judith Durham looks back at The Seekers by Nick Thomas

F

ifty years ago, The Seekers were a pop music sensation. Featuring members Athol Guy, Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and lead vocalist Judith Durham, the Aussie group’s pop-folk fusion proved popular in America and their hit, “Georgy Girl,” was a nominee at the 1967 Oscar ceremony for ‘Best Song’ for the film of the same name, although it lost to “Born Free.” The Seekers had burst onto the world music scene just two years earlier with their 1965 hit “I’ll Never Find Another You,” but Durham struggled with the sudden celebrity status. “I was suddenly thrust into the international spotlight and found myself inadvertently in competition with the glamorous UK stars of the period – Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, Lulu, Twiggy,” said Durham from her home in Melbourne. “I was a 20-year-old girl who worked by day as a secretary, and I weighed more than 10 stone (140-lbs at 5’2”). Those girls were ‘real’ stars to me – slim, pretty, and wearing beautiful clothes. I sewed my own frocks for TV shows and performances! I didn’t feel I was glamorous enough to be the pop star I was being projected as. It caused a lot of anxiety for me for the first two or three years.” From 1965 to 1968, The Seekers’ sound enchanted the pop music world with a string of hits including “A World of Our Own,” “Someday, One Day,” and “The Carnival Is Over” (see www.

theseekers.com.au). But as the group’s popularity increased, the pressure on the lead singer continued to mount. “We worked constantly for four years and when we weren’t doing seasons of tours, we were in the recording studio. It was exhausting.” So, in July 1968, Durham parted ways with The Seekers to pursue her own career (see www. judithdurham.com). With her departure, The Seekers disbanded. However, the group reformed over the years with various replacement lead vocalists while Durham focused on her solo career. Enviably, the group’s enduring popularity led to several reunions of the original ensemble. Reuniting with The Seekers meant

putting her 25-year solo career on hold, but Durham felt compelled. “I wanted to do it for the group’s fans, who had remained so loyal for so long, and who had never stopped pleading with us to come back. What I didn’t realize was that it would become an on-again, off-again situation for another 25 years!” But four years ago, tragedy struck. “We were still performing by the time our 50th anniversary rolled around. During a sell-out Australian tour as part of our Golden Jubilee in 2013, I suffer a brain hemorrhage after the first of four nights in Melbourne.” Durham was in hospital and rehab for six months and her recovery still continues. seniortimesmagazine.com

“That was a difficult time,” she admitted. “I had problems finding the words I needed in conversation, and still do to a certain extent. I effectively had to learn to write again. But my long-term memory wasn’t affected, so I had no problem remembering things like lyrics. And thankfully, my voice wasn’t affected in any way.” Looking back on the past 50 years, Durham – who turns 75 in July – has continued to forge ahead through the good times and the bad. “Even though age and illness have slowed me down some, I still crave creative stimulation,” she says. “I hope I can still absorb myself in those pursuits until it’s time to go.” s

Charity

We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

Enjoying Act Three Stranger Than Fiction

Y

ale researchers, after polling 3,635 persons over 50, announced that if you read fiction 30 minutes a day, you will live two years longer than people who don’t read or just browse magazines. Empathy, intelligence, vocabulary, and thinking skills—all keys to longevity—are what fiction reading produces. Even busy persons can read a book a week. The Yale study shows that those who read 50 books a year experience peace, satisfaction, and better sleep. I cannot imagine a better way to prolong one’s life than spending 30 minutes a day reading the best novel of all time, Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace,” which recounts Napoleon’s invasion of Russia and its impact on the Rostov family, especially Natasha—her tragic, thwarted love for Prince Andrei, her betrayal by the duplicitous Anatole Kuragin, and her later fulfillment as the wife of Pierre, a lovable searcher for truth. “War and Peace” has everything: thrilling romance, heartbreak, and battlefield drama. I also recommend, for Seniors who want to understand the younger generation, Jonathan Franzen’s novel “The Corrections,” which includes such insights as, “Life, in her experience, had a kind of velvet luster. You looked at yourself from one perspective and all you saw was weirdness. Move your head a little bit, though, and everything looked reasonably normal.” Two other novels that might extend

your life are James Jones’s “From Here to Eternity,” focusing on the U.S. Infantry during the days immediately preceding Pearl Harbor, and John Steinbeck’s griping portrait of the Great Depression, “The Grapes of Wrath.”

As Seniors approach retirement, it’s useful to consider some of the teachings of British philosopher Alan Watts, author of “The Way of Zen,” which questions our conventional beliefs. “The physical universe is basically playful,” Watts stated. “There is no necessity for it whatsoever. It is not going anywhere. It doesn’t have some destination that it ought to arrive at. It should be experienced as a musical thing. It is playful, unpredictable, with moments of brilliance. Life exists for itself . . . You play the piano, you don’t work the piano.” A musical composition is not about the last note, the destination of the piece. It’s about what happens along the way. And so it is with life.

A musical composition is not about the last note, the destination of the piece. It’s about what happens along the way. And so it is with life. Reading nonfiction, according to Yale researchers, won’t help you live longer, but successful executives say that nonfiction helped them get to the top, citing Sir Richard Branson’s “Losing My Virginity,” which deals with how he built the Virgin empire into 400 companies, grossing $12 billion. Branson’s a fearless risk-taker. His Virgin Books published my biography, “Buddy Holly.” My American publisher did little for me, but Virgin flew me from my home in Key West to Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, and London for 50 interviews, including the BBC and Rupert Murdock’s Sky TV network. As a result, “Buddy Holly” became a bestseller in England. Branson keeps current; as the world changes, so does he. Living in the present is important—stop to enjoy every moment, find beauty in each and every day. Life, he believes, is all about striving and growing. “I never want to have made it; I want to continue making it.”

Eudora Welty wrote in “Some Notes on River Country,” “A place that ever was lived in is like a fire that never goes out. It flares up, it smolders for a time, it is fanned or smothered by circumstance, but its being is intact, forever fluttering within it, the result of some original ignition.” Writing nonfiction has done a pretty good job of keeping me alive to my present age, 84. Since 1990 I’ve turned out seven biographies, and my eighth, “Olivia de Havilland and the Golden Age of Hollywood,” will be published September 15. While writing this column, I suffered a burst blood vessel in my left eye, and I look like I’ve been in a barroom brawl, with the shiner of all time, but I’m soldiering on, and, God willing if the river doesn’t rise, I’ll be 85 on August 2. s Ellis Amburn is in the Hall of Excellence at TCU’s Schieffer School of Journalism. GAINESVILLE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE

Breaking Legs

Thru June 10 English professor and playwright Terence O’Keefe is about to discover that there’s no business like show business... unless it’s the “family business.” Terence hopes Lou, the father of former student Angie Graziano who runs an Italian restaurant, will invest in his latest play. Although they are theatre fans, “break a leg” means something entirely different to them. Lou’s mafia money comes with an order to marry his daughter and Terence already has a wife. After witnessing an unfortunate accident. Terence realizes that he is in way over his head. Well-seasoned with irresistible innuendo, laugher is on the menu as this deliciously dark comedy serves up spaghetti with a side of murder, menace and meatballs. Leave the kids at home for this one!

HIGH SPRINGS PLAYHOUSE

Mama Mia!

Thru June 17 Young Sophie is about to get married on the Greek island paradise where she grew up. The only problem? She wants her dad to walk her down the aisle... and she doesn’t know who he is. In her quest to discover the truth, Sophie reads her mother’s old diary, does the math, and invites three of Donna’s former suitors from 20 years ago to the wedding. Will this blast from the past reveal her father’s identity?

Thru June 24 At a large, tastefully appointed Sneden’s Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. They must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusion and mis-communication mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.

BOOK REVIEW BY

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

Natural Causes BARBARA EHRENREICH c.2018, Twelve, $27 / $35 Canada, 256 pages

W

e all gotta go sometime. For most of us, that time is later: eight, nine decades of wringing out every last drop of life, if we’re lucky. A few tucks here, a little dye there, hours at the gym, smaller meals, and we might manage to get a year or two more – although, as Barbara Ehrenreich reminds in her new book “Natural Causes,” you can run from your own mortality, but you can’t hide. Some time ago, Barbara Ehrenreich decided to forego most recommended medical tests. It wasn’t because she was feeling re-

bellious; instead, she thought that such tests seemed to be looking for problems that didn’t exist, with “overdiagnosis” as an end result. And besides, Ehrenreich decided, she was “old enough to die.” The fact of the matter is, we all are. The freedom to acknowledge that, and to reject panicked unnecessaries concerning our health, “is worth celebrating.” It all begins before we’re even born, in what Ehrenreich calls “rituals.” Until the 1970s, for example, women gave birth in positions more convenient to their doctors, and they did it without question; before that, laboring mothers were often rendered unconscious to have their babies. The tide turned, in part, because women were empowered enough to start demanding change. Yes, Ehrenreich admits, there are many good reasons to have vaccines, tests, screenings, and exams – but there are many good reasons not to. Some cancers, especially those that hit elder patients hardest, are slow-growing enough that it’s safer not to treat them. Going for a full head-totoe physical may make you feel better, but that doesn’t guarantee that a problem won’t crop up a week after you’ve had one. Some treatments, she says, can even backfire, and make things worse. Okay, so you’ll just self-monitor, try to eat right, and stay active, then. Sure. But remember one thing…. Says Ehrenreich “Many of the people who got caught up in the health ‘craze’… – people who exercised, watched what

they ate, abstained from smoking and heavy drinking – have nevertheless died.” And there you have it: author Barbara Ehrenreich’s book is not so much an anti-medical-establishment treatise. Though not always complimentary about medicine in general, she’s balanced. She’s not against healthy lifestyles at all. Instead, “Natural Causes” is more of a reminder that you can rant, wail, avoid “junk food,” and exercise until your muscles scream, and you’re still not getting out alive. Even so, reading this book will make you see your body in a different light. Ehrenreich writes about cutting-edge science and in doing so, makes the human body seem like a cellular-level Ninja Warrior. That total badness can work quietly, unseen, against us, as researchers recently discovered to their horror, which proves the whole premise of this

book: when it comes to our health, we only think we can control it. Yeeks, that’s a sobering idea but it’s softened by wry humor and fascinating, eyebrow-raising info that’s irresistible. For science geeks, the health conscious, and anyone who dreams of immortality, “Natural Causes” is a book you gotta go get. s Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books.
