Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip.

Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself. Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal. Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. <M Maari rily lyyn befo beefo foree, aagge 6 fore 68 8 See Se ee my sto t ryy at Exxce E xce cep pttio i na nalD Den e tiist stry ryy.ccom om

Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place. JUNE AS A NAME FOR CHILDREN HAS GROWN IN POPULARITY OVER THE LAST DECADE. The name June, for both boys and girls, reached its peak in 1925 as the 39th most popular name. Over the following decades the

popularity of the name tapered off until it was reinvigorated in the 2000s. Today it remains in the top 1000 names each year.

Nothing But Sunshine June is the month with the most sunshine in the Northern hemisphere

June is also host to the first official day of summer, otherwise known as the summer solstice, on June 21. The summer solstice is the astrological beginning of summer, when the sun has reached its highest point in the sky. However, the summer heat often sets-in weeks prior to this day.

The month of June has become known for being a great month to get hitched. The early summer weather, colorful sunsets and blooming flowers seem to make the perfect background for tying the knot. However, June stands in sharp contrast to its neighbor. May has been considered one of the unluckiest months to get married. Truly superstitious people may even know the anonymous poem which states, “marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” June 2019

Skin Cancer Awareness Keeping Your Skin Safe: What to look out for!

Story by Sofia Arriaga Photography by Ericka Winterrowd

F

lorida can be named many things, but one label the state prides itself on most is being the Sunshine State. During the hot summer months, the warmth can be comforting for outdoor activities. But when does the sun begin to harm our skin, and when should we be worried we’ve been damaged by it? Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Florida Abel Torres said when a new spot is noticed, the individual should examine the ABCDE’s: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolution. While most spots don’t grow in perfect symmetry, Dr. Torres said a spot sprouting in obvious asymmetry should signal concern. “Tumors that are cancerous tend to not have sharp borders, they tend to grow in irregular patterns,” he said. “The more irregular the color, the more likely that it’s malignant or cancerous.” Malignant spots also commonly grow in diameter. If individuals notice two or more of these factors present or the spot evolves by displaying bleeding, crusting or pain, he or she should make an appointment with a practitioner. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation’s website only 20 to 30 percent of melanomas are found in existing moles, while 70 to 80 percent arise on apparently normal skin. “The bottom line is: if you have a new spot that’s persistent you should always be concerned about the possibility that it’s some kind of skin cancer,” Dr. Torres said. He explained that cancerous spots can visibly subdue, but typically come back on the same part of the body.

12   June 2019

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s website also states that individuals who live in states with more sunlight such as Florida have increased chances of contracting skin cancer, and more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. An estimated 192,310 cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2019, according to the website. “Melanoma is the second leading cause of death in women age 20-29,” Dr. Torres said. “People don’t realize it.”

“The ideal way to avoid it is to just be out of the sun. But if you can’t avoid it, the next best thing is to use protective clothing.” Dr. Torres explained that tanning beds and sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. should be avoided, as that is when the sun spreads the most overhead sunlight. “The ideal way to avoid it is to just be out of the sun. But if you can’t avoid it, the next best thing is to use protective clothing,” he said. This includes wide-brimmed hats and clothes designed for UV protection. After clothing, Dr. Torres said he recommends sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. “The bottom line is you want to avoid burning,” he said. Dr. Torres explained that the SPF represents the amount of time the product protects the skin from burning. The fairer seniortimesmagazine.com

the skin tone the higher SPF should be used to extend the period of time it takes for the skin to burn. He said senior citizens should examine their skin at least once a month. They can do so after a shower and document any spots raising concern with photos. Dr. Torres also dispelled the myth that avoiding the sun leads to Vitamin D deficiency. “We may have some kind of deficiency of Vitamin D as a population,” he said, “but most people get more than enough sun exposure to get Vitamin D.” He said those who wear protective clothing and sunscreen are still receiving healthy amounts of sun exposure. And if Vitamin D deficiency is a concern, individuals can purchase supplements or foods that are high in Vitamin D. The Skin Cancer Foundation website lists egg yolks, milk and orange juice. Gainesville resident Lisa Quirion Humphrey had a skin cancer scare during her last semester of nursing school. “I was looking in the mirror getting ready one day and noticed a little

black dot on the front of my left shoulder. It was clearly darker than my other little brown spots. It wasn’t raised and had clean edges like a nickel,” she said. Despite the spot not appearing harmful, Humphrey knew about the quick development of skin cancer. “I watched it for a few months and noticed it had gotten bigger and the edges were jagged like a dime so I decided I’d better notify my physician,” Humphrey said. “She didn’t think it was anything as I have olive skin tone, but did a punch biopsy anyway. Two weeks later it came back positive.” Humphrey said she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. While some cases tend to go under the radar, there are other popular factors that patients should be aware of that increase chances of skin cancer. “Anything that affects your immune system will put you at higher risk of getting skin cancer,” Dr. Torres said. Another Gainesville resident, Betsy Field Allen, received a seniortimesmagazine.com

“Anything that affects your immune system will put you at higher risk of getting skin cancer.” kidney transplant nine years ago, and attributes the surgery to her contraction of skin cancer. In March, Allen was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, this is the second most common form of skin cancer, and is caused by overexposure to UV Rays from the sun and tanning beds. Allen said she believes her anti rejection drugs from her transplant surgery influenced this. “Your chance of skin cancer goes up 60 percent after five years on these drugs,” Allen said. According to Dr. Torres, skin cancer is one of the major reasons for death of people with transplants. Allen said she had two friends, one who had a heart transplant and another who had a kidney transplant, and both

subsequently passed away from skin cancer. Prior to Allen’s surgery, she said she didn’t worry about the effects of the sun since she has dark olive skin. She said she would exercise at outdoor pools and spend an hour lying in the sun every time she visited the beach, using baby oil on her skin. Now, Allen said she wears protective clothing that shields her from UV rays, applies sunscreen before going outdoors and always has a hat. “Probably 80 percent of the time is under an umbrella,” she said in relation to her time at the beach. “Now I’m careful.” s For more information on how to care for your skin and identify dangerous spots, visit: skincancer.org. My Pink Ribbon Story

I

t was rare for a farm family to seek out a doctor during the 1950s and ‘60s when I was growing up. When it came to annual checkups, my father’s mantra was “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Colds, flu, and diseases such as measles or mumps were treated at home with a mother’s loving care, prayer and chicken soup. On rare occasions, such as a broken bone, a doctor’s visit was warranted. Otherwise, for almost everything else mothers turned to holistic cures that had been handed down in families through the generations. An example of this was when I tumbled down the stairs as a toddler, splitting open the tender skin under my chin. My mother frantically called her sister, a mother of seven, and the two determined the wound would heal if taped together tightly. I still have the scar to prove otherwise. Today, of course, a quick trip to the emergency room and a few stitches would have taken care of that scar. But it was not the norm back then. As my parents grew older, annual checkups reluctantly became a part of their routine. My father developed a heart condition which he saw the doctor for, and my mother had high cholesterol that she monitored. Aside from that, they managed to steer clear of the doctor’s office as much as possible. I could

18   June 2019

tell doctor appointments were something they considered a nuisance. As my dad often said, “When your time’s up, it’s up. There’s nothing you can do about it.” So, this was the mindset I was raised with. Being a strong country girl, eating healthy and not prone to any bad habits,

I went through my youth and into my 30s rarely seeing a doctor. Of course, during pregnancy and when my chicks were born, I would see my obstetrician regularly—but that was for them, not me. As the years passed my busy life took me through my 40s and 50s, and before I knew it, I was of the age when annual mammograms were required. I was very nonchalant about these

annual exams since breast cancer didn’t run in my family, and every time I had a mammogram I was quickly released with a smile and the comment “Everything looks great, see you next year.” I should have been happy with that outcome, but somehow it annoyed me that I was required to make this effort every year, when I was not a likely candidate for cancer. The predisposing factors for breast cancer that I was aware of were a family history of this disease, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and never breastfeeding a child. None of these factors applied to me. Following in my parents’ footsteps, I became lax about keeping these appointments. Reminders came to set up mammogram appointments, but always something “important” conflicted, so I put it off. I told myself I would call the office back tomorrow. Tomorrow turned into weeks, and weeks turned into a year. Before I knew it, I was about 18 months overdue.   Around this time I was busily preparing to leave for the summer, journeying back to my hometown in the Midwest. This was my usual routine, and something I always looked forward to. My parents had both passed away, but we kept their A-frame home as a vacation home for our family. Every summer I would travel back to relax in the country and care for the house, attending to any repairs or updates it required. In the middle of all the preparations to leave, I once again got a reminder for a mammogram. Too busy to think about it, I set the reminder aside. Now, I am not a person prone to having dreams, or if I do—I don’t remember them. I can probably only remember two or three dreams I have had in my life. However, one morning a few days later I awoke and clearly remembered being with my father in his pick-up seniortimesmagazine.com

truck, riding along our familiar country roads. My father was a man of few words, but the few words he used always packed a punch. In my dream, he pulled his truck off onto the side of the road and pointed to a picturesque cemetery. All he said as he motioned out his driver’s side window was, “Well, there it is…” I awoke abruptly at this moment, feeling that it wasn’t really a dream… that I had actually been with my father. I couldn’t shake the feeling all day, and I kept thinking about what he said. What was he trying to tell me? Finally, I felt sure he was saying “If you don’t take care of yourself, there it (the cemetery) is.” OK, Dad, I thought to myself, I’ll see if they can work me in for a mammogram before I leave town. Of course, when I called to make the appointment they were booked up a month

“Because I listened to my father’s message, made my health a priority and scheduled that mammogram appointment… my pink ribbon story has a happy ending.” or so ahead. When I informed them I would be away all summer, I was told that would make me dangerously overdue for the exam. The caring lady I spoke to told me to hold on and she would check if there were any options to be seen before I left. When she came back to the phone, she had somehow found a 7 a.m. appointment for me just a few days later. Long story short, I had my exam and was expecting to skip out the door with a cheerful “Everything looks great, see you next year” from the girls at the diagnostic imaging office. But that was not what happened. They saw something suspicious, called me back for a biopsy, then an ultrasound, more tests… and finally the phone call came that no one wants to hear, “I am so sorry, but you have cancer.” Because I listened to my father’s message, made my health a priority and scheduled that mammogram appointment… my pink ribbon story has a happy ending. My breast cancer was caught when it was Stage 1 and I was immediately introduced to a team of doctors who orchestrated my complete care. Surgery, oncology, radiation and recurring evaluations were provided. I never felt alone while going through this life-challenge. My doctors, family, friends and especially my faith carried me through each day. Today I am a four-year breast cancer survivor. Not a day goes by that I don’t realize how blessed I am. My gratitude has inspired my mission to share the message I received on that fateful day: Make time to take care of yourself, or “there it is…” s

Prior to learning her fate, the day seemed just like any other. The temperature was cooler – at least by southern standards – though November in the Sunshine State doesn’t exactly fit the textbook definition of fall, especially for Houlihan who grew up in Illinois and had recently moved to Gainesville from Hollywood, Florida. In an attempt to fill one of the many check-boxes in transitioning to a new town, she made an appointment with a primary care doctor, which unbeknownst to her would prove life changing. It was just a routine, yearly checkup, but this time doctors noticed that Houlihan, who wasn’t experiencing any symptoms, showed signs of abnormal cells. To evaluate their severity, a biopsy was performed and the results came in the form of a one-word sucker punch. A six-letter diagnosis that no one wants to hear slipped out of the doctor’s mouth with the weight of a million bricks: cancer. “Of course, you know, when you hear the word cancer you just, you just don’t know what to think. It’s scary,” Houlihan said in a recent phone interview. To gain clarity of the situation, she sent her films and paperwork to her niece Samantha who was a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at UF Health Shands Hospital. Within a week, Houlihan met with Dr. Linda Morgan who informed her

that she had stage III uterine papillary serous, which is an uncommon form of endometrial cancer that has an unfavorable survival rate. A mere 20 percent of women who have the third stage of this disease make it another five years, according to the sgo. org Gynecologic Oncology journal “Management of Women with Uterine Papillary Serous Cancer.” Within 48 hours of being told she might not live long enough to see 2015, she underwent a complete hysterectomy and the removal of 32 lymph nodes – three of which were cancerous. “My stomach was kind of in knots not really knowing what the treatment plan would be, but I really tried to remain

Oncologist Dr. Merry Markham and radiologist Dr. Anamaria Yeung at Shands then walked her through the intense process, but possible benefit that poisoning her body with chemo and exposing it to radiation could have on seniortimesmagazine.com

I just said lots of prayers to God,” she said. “And my family – my family, my stepchildren, my husband, everybody just kept me going, kept me positive.” In anticipation of the rigorous road ahead, her daughters put together a chemotherapy bag filled with books, journals, an iPod, a comforter and a Build-a-Bear cat to help occupy her during lengthy medical sessions. She was also surrounded by love and support from the rest of her family as well. Though everything was unraveling rather quickly, she still didn’t have a date set in stone until Christmas Eve when she got a call informing her that her first appointment would be on December 28. “When I hung up that phone I just sat down and I just cried because then it was real. Then I knew what was happening,” she said. “There was a time certain and then it was real. But then, after I got through the crying session, I just got up and continued on.”

Her family accompanied her to that first appointment, but it wasn’t until the second visit that she began seeing the side effects of inflicting her body with a toxic substance. Not wanting to continue watching her hair fall out in clumps, she asked her husband to shave off what remained and opted to wear a wig of light blonde locks – a choice that had been made prior, on a day out with her nieces and sisterin-law. Like a fashion show montage, they all began trying on wigs varying in bright colors, lengths and styles — making the experience one of enjoyment rather than sadness.   After finishing three chemo sessions and radiation, she took a trip back home to visit her sister who was dealing with the diagnosis of cervical cancer and wasn’t doing as well as Houlihan, who credits her progress with staying optimistic. “That I think is the key point to surviving not only cancer but most things is being positive and having a faith,” she said. “Attitude is everything with cancer. As the treatment built up in her body, each remaining appointment left her feeling exhausted, but it wasn’t long before she experienced her sixth and final dose of chemo. She was cancer free. A phrase that would bring a sense of relief to a typical patient, but an outcome that Houlihan expected from the beginning. “I never once felt that I wasn’t going to Houlihan has been a member of the Gainesville Garden Club since 2017. Tinseltown Talks Congratsamundo to Happy Days’ Anson Williams for Saving Lives by Nick Thomas

A

s one of the most popular television shows in the late ‘70s to early ‘80s, “Happy Days” helped propel many cast regulars into the production side of show business. Ron Howard, Henry Winkler, Don Most, and Anson Williams all achieved recognition behind the camera as producers, directors, and/or writers. Williams played Potsie – the naïve, well-meaning friend to Ron Howard’s Richie Cunningham character – and says the show was almost shelved when the pilot didn’t sell and then aired by ABC for an episode of “Love, American Style.” “When ‘American Graffiti’ came out (in 1973) and was so popular, ABC reshot another pilot more like ‘Graffiti’ and changed some of the cast,” said Williams from Los Angeles. The show became a hit and Williams partly credits the show’s producer and writer for motivating the cast. “I had such an education because of Garry Marshall who inspired us to broaden our horizons.” Later becoming a successful TV director himself, Williams also branched out into the business world selling dozens of products on QVC. He recently launched BOGO (Buy One Get One) List, a website to help consumers save money (see www. bogolist.com). “It’s also important for seniors with limited incomes,” he said. “Improving their lifestyle is paramount to BOGO List.” Williams is especially gratified with another business venture called Alert Drops, a simple spray he developed to prevent drowsy drivers from falling asleep behind the wheel. He notes that thousands of drowsy-driving related fatalities and many more injuries occur across the United States each year. “It’s a common but often neglected problem,” he explained. “Just a spray of Alert Drops on the top of the tongue produces a reflex reaction that causes the body to release a burst of adrenaline and you’re instantly awake.” Williams experienced the dangers of drowsy driving back in the late ‘80s while working on the Slap Maxwell TV series.

“After a rough day directing in the hot Palmdale desert, I was driving home and suddenly found myself bouncing around in the car off the road. I’d fallen asleep and was extremely lucky I didn’t kill myself. It scared the heck out of me,” he said. He later recounted the incident to his “uncle,” Dr. Henry Heimlich – yes, of the anti-choking Heimlich Maneuver fame. Heimlich, who was actually Williams’ second cousin, suggested carrying slices of lemon in the car to counter drowsiness. “I did that for years and it worked, but who wants to suck on messy lemons when driving? I called Uncle Hank and seniortimesmagazine.com

asked if the same effect could be achieved by putting the lemon ingredients in a spray bottle. He said that was a brilliant idea. We’re saving lives every day, which is very satisfying” (see www.alertdrops. com).   While still appearing in “Happy Days” Anson Williams publicity shot from Happy Days. Williams was inspired to produce the TV movie, “Skyward,” beginning the new phase of his career behind the camera. While he looks back on those early entertainment days with fondness, he’s especially proud of his achievement away from the camera with Alert Drops. “I left home when I was 18 with just $100 and made it into show business,” Williams said. “To get on a hit show like ‘Happy Days,’ then become a director, and to have an ‘uncle’ like Dr. Heimlich who inspired me to create a life-saving product – what are the chances of all that happening?” s Nick Thomas teaches at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala, and has written features, columns, and interviews for over 700 newspapers and magazines.

STAYIN’ ALIVE

Save A Life The Process of CPR Certification

story and photography by Summer Jarro

K

nowing CPR can save someone’s life.   “You never know when you are going to need it,” said Clay Gibbons, owner of Gator CPR, a community-based training center that offers CPR courses in Gainesville. CPR is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a procedure performed on someone when their heart stops beating and allows for a greater chance of survival after cardiac arrest. CPR is important to know because when used it helps maintain active blood flow on a person, which can help greatly with resuscitation efforts once paramedics or medical professionals arrive. “There’s hundreds and hundreds of stories of people getting saved and then there are also an equal amount of people who don’t know what to do,” Gibbons said. Each year, an average of 475,000 Americans die from cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association. In Gainesville and Alachua County, there are multiple centers or organizations that offer CPR classes to get people certified like GatorCPR and also the CPR Training Center at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital. There are different types of CPR courses with the most common courses for certification being the Basic Life Support (BLS) certification class for health care professionals and a Heart Saver class for lay rescuers, or people in the community who are not health care providers but are still trained in CPR. If someone wants to get CPR certified all they need to do is take the proper CPR course. Once completed they receive their CPR certification card.

26   June 2019

The two common courses usually take between two to four hours where attendees are taught adult, child and infant CPR, how to relieve choking, compressions and breaths, how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid skills, Gibbons said. For the BLS certification class, attendees are required to stay and learn every component of the class plus complete a 25 question exam online or in class to become CPR certified. To achieve CPR certification in the Heart Saver course, the minimum requirement for attendees is to learn adult CPR and how to use an AED, said Lizzy Casey, director of operations at GatorCPR. GatorCPR offers the BLS course four to five times a week and the Heart Saver course every other week for the community. “The more people we can get out there who know how to do CPR — it increases our survival rate because if you think about it we are usually the first responder,” Gibbons said. “We’re the first people on the site before the paramedics arrive, so what we do is critical prior to EMS (Emergency Medical Services) coming.” Both classes go through the same concepts, but the health care provider course also delves into team dynamics. The classes usually begin with showing videos of CPR situations and how to do chest compressions properly on adults. The CPR instructor then reviews the steps one should take when someone goes into cardiac arrest. According to redcross.org, these steps include: checking to make sure the area around the person is safe and clear, tap the person on the shoulder and ask them “Are you Ok?” to ensure they need help, Call seniortimesmagazine.com

There are several places in Gainesville and Alachua County that offer CPR training courses, including GatorCPR — a community-based training center in Gainesville. In CPR courses, attendees use different equipment provided to learn how to give CPR on a person under cardiac arrest. Embracing Life Medicare Madness

Y

ou know you are getting old when your favorite belongings fall into one of three categories – antique, retro or vintage. About five years ago, while browsing shops selling used items, I saw a reflection of my past sitting on their shelves. At the time I chuckled a bit. However, my musings were confirmed when I found this (supposedly humorous) question. Question – What is the most common remark made by 60+ year-olds when they browse an antique store? Answer – “I remember these.”

Yikes! The aging process had snuck up on me. Senior citizenship became all too real. Fast forward a few years. My 65th birthday cannot get here fast enough. That major milestone happens for me this month. Regular readers know that I was forced into early retirement. In the midst of that emotional turmoil, I enrolled in Social Security. Being constantly bombarded with nagging media reminders of decisions associated with aging added to my personal dilemma. First came the mountains of mail from AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons). According to their literature, AARP is a nonprofit interest group. AARP’s mission is, “To empower people to choose how they live as they age.”

30   June 2019

Initially I opened their intriguing mailouts and learned about the numerous concessions offered. Some are well-known benefits, while others were surprising. If insurance and travel discounts are not enough, they also offer free online games – including Backgammon and Mahjong. While their purpose and plan are most likely of great benefit to many people, I have to wonder how much of the membership fee is used for printing and mailing. Next came the somewhat confusing, but definitely aggravating, enrollment in Medicare. The system seemed complicated and promoted purchasing supplemental insurance. Of course, the amount of junk mail magnified ten-fold. Thick envelopes marked “IMPORTANT,” easy-to-read postcard reminders, stacks of advertising mailers were delivered to my mailbox on a daily basis. When I discovered these are marketing materials to sell insurance, they went unopened into my paper recycling box. Discarding snail mail grew easier, but remedying robocalls to my landline remained nearly impossible. Since I do not have caller-ID, I was unable to screen callers. The same unsolicited sales calls flooded my cell phone too, but I let them go to voicemail. Email spoofing is another form of harassment I have learned about during this perplexing phase of life. Cyber crooks use counterfeit headers of

insurance companies or governmental agencies to make emails look legit. That tactic is successful for virtual thieves since the messages appear to be from valid sources. An experienced computer technician advised me not to open any unrequested literature or quotes. Those electronic mailouts could be a form of phishing or a means of installing malware. Lastly, a salesperson knocked on my front door. He was armed with a briefcase filled with booklets and brochures. After a bit of shell shock, I asked him to leave. Soon after his unwelcomed visit, I received my Medicare card. (Since I was already receiving Social Security, Medicare enrollment was automatic.) Upon receipt of the dreaded tangible old-age badge, I knew my current strategy was no longer viable. The time for simply deleting, discarding or disregarding all insurance advertisements had ended. Like it or not, I had to embrace my transition into Medicare. A free consultation with an insurance advisor, trained in Medicare, initiated my evolution. She reviewed the options available, applicable to my personal situation. The best part, she encouraged me to think it through before deciding. What a difference from the high-pressured salespersons and scammers! My stress significantly subsided. Hallelujah! I have almost reached an end to the Medicare madness. Perhaps the greatest gift for my 65th birthday will be less marketing schemes. Who knows? Maybe I will have time to take my ancient possessions to antique or consignment stores. Proceeds from their sale might pay the Medicare supplemental insurance premiums. The circle of life continues. s Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

OCALA CIVIC THEATRE

Million Dollar Quartet Opens May 31; prev May 29-30

The Addams Family May 16 - June 9

Four legends, one night and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll! Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley have one of the greatest jam sessions of all time in the Tony Award winning musical “Million Dollar Quartet,” opening at the Hippodrome Theatre Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m. Inspired by a true event, these four iconic musicians play their hearts out live on stage as they weave a tale filled with broken promises, deception, betrayal and passion. Featuring legendary tunes like Blue Suede Shoes, I Walk The Line, Hound Dog, and Great Balls Of Fire.

The iconic TV show comes to life in a marvelously morbid musical! Wednesday Addams is all grown up and in love with an ordinary young man from Ohio. On a dark and stormy night, the future in-laws arrive at the macabre mansion to meet the “creepy and the kooky, mysterious and spooky” Addams Family: Morticia and Gomez, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Lurch, and Grandma. Meeting the parents has never been so terrifying… especially when the spirits of the Addams ancestors in the graveyard rise to the occasion.

Ins And Outs May 17- June 2 Join us for yet another world premiere of two one-act plays written by our very own Esteban Alvarez III who brought us the highly entertaining show “Turning Tables.” In the first story you’ll laugh as cafe employees deal with meeting new people. So you know who’s going to die, right? But who will the murderer be? It’s up to YOU to figure out whodunit– and not only are you questioning the cast, but they are questioning you! Yes, you are a suspect as well! This frantic mystery-comedy will have audiences guessing until the last clue is dropped and the last ham overacts! June 2019

BOOK REVIEW BY

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

Odd Partners: An Anthology EDITED BY ANNE PERRY c.2019, Ballantine Books $28.00 / $37.00 Canada, 357 pages

Y

ou’ll freely admit it: you can’t do it alone. Every important thing you do takes two. Another opinion, a confirmation that you’re right, an extra set of hands, another pair of eyes, everything works better when you’ve got help. It takes a pair to make progress, a duo to do well, and in the new anthology, “Odd Partners: An Anthology,” edited by Anne Perry, it takes two to murder. Cut from the same cloth. That’s what people say about you and your best pal,

42   June 2019

but being unalike is exactly what makes your friendship work. Unique pairings like yours are what you’ll find in this collection of short stories from some of America’s best mystery writers. Northern Minnesota offers prime fishing and great wildlife-watching, but rich developers sometimes have different notions. In “The Nature of the Beast” by William Kent Krueger, that doesn’t set very well with an angler who loves the land – and it doesn’t set well, either, with a wolf he helped save. Everyone, it seems, is on social media these days, including cats. In “Oglethorpe’s Camera” by Claire Ortalda, a cat fetches a clue to a murder – or does he? A bloody stocking cap and a little pussyfooting around tell the tale. “Loose Lips Sink Ships,” as they used to say during World War II, and in “Glock, Paper, Scissors” by Shelley Costa, loose lips can cause murder. Keeping ones’ mouth shut, however, can ensure that revenge happens, even decades later. If you could disappear, how would you do it? In “What Ever Happened to Lorna Winters?” by Lisa Morton, how would you make someone disappear, if they lived in the limelight? If you’re an inveterate note-taker, then you’ll understand why it’s important to write everything down. If it’s not in print, it doesn’t exist, but in “No 11 Squatter” by Adele Polomski, it’s a lifeor-death matter. And Eric Applebaum’s mind was slipping but not totally gone. Still, he couldn’t remember why he was on an airplane, or where he was going. In

“The Last Game” by Robert Dugoni, though, he learns that it’s the trip of a lifetime… Every year, you say these words: “I have no time to read!” but this year, you can break the cycle. “Odd Partners” gives you nineteen different ways to do it. In her introduction, editor and author Anne Perry says that she’s always been intrigued by the idea of “any two beings who had to cooperate with each other… to solve a crime.” Here, they also commit crimes, inadvertently or on purpose, in ways that surprise readers with nice plot twists and delightfully imaginative interpretations of Perry’s required “beings.”

Another surprise: some of these stories aren’t mysteries but are more suspense-like, perhaps in the vein of old Hitchcockian works. It’s a nice shake-up, which further underscores the theme of “different.” So put away your bookmarks; you won’t need ‘em. With this book, tuck it, take it, and enjoy any of the stories inside. You’ll find “Odd Partners: An Anthology” to be one fun book. s Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books. seniortimesmagazine.com
