Would you like to experience the beneďŹ ts of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip. Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.
Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.
Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.
Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.
Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place.

CLEAR SOUND AUDIOLOGY WELCOMES DR. MICHELLE LANG
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER For many people, the phase Dog Days of Summer conjures up visions of dogs lying around during the hot, lazy days of summer in late July and August. Others believe that this is the time period when dogs actually go crazy because it’s so hot and humid. But, what does the phrase Dog Days of Summer actually mean? According to the Farmer’s Almanac, during this time frame, Sirius, one of the brightest stars in the constellation Canis Major, lines up in the same region as the sun and becomes visible from any part of earth. Sirus, which is sometimes called the dog star, rises and sets on July 23, and is so bright that Romans thought it gave off heat causing hot, sultry temperatures, and they referred to this time period as “diēs caniculārēs”, or “dog days” which lasts 20 days before, and 20 days after Sirus and the Sun align, so we actually recognize the Dog Days of Summer from July 3 to Aug. 11.
National Senior Citizens Day August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day, established to remind and encourage us to show our Seniors respect and appreciation. President Ronald Regan established this proclamation on August 19, 1988 to celebrate the accomplishments of older citizens. According to his Proclamation, President Reagan said, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.” August 2018

GOLD STAR, GREEN THUMB
Aged to Perfection Gainesville Garden Club’s Annual Event Benefits Gold Star Families Memorial Marker by Stephanie Richards
T
he Gainesville Garden Club has been deeply rooted in the community for 94 years, planting seeds that have blossomed into beautiful landscapes, horticulture education and impactful civic projects. Founded in 1924, the group’s mission statement is “members of the Gainesville Garden Club are special people who appreciate the importance of friendships while they promote the beauty of nature, stimulate a knowledge and love of gardening and design, aid in the protection of birds, butterflies and native plant material, and participate in civic and environmental responsibilities.” Today, the non-profit boasts 180 members comprised of men and women who are employed or retired and includes diggers and designers, according to Fran Maris, Gainesville Garden Club President. “Ninety-four years is an awesome lifespan for a club. I think people in the community are looking for a place to get together face to face and see what they can gain by interacting with other people,” Maris said. “We are so dependent on computers; here that personal interaction gives you first-hand knowledge and the chance to develop new friendships.” The organization is dedicated to education, beautification and conservation, and is affiliated with the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. In 1970, the club moved to its permanent location on a four-acre site, donated by Dr. Lamar and Mrs. Louise Roberts. Since that time, buildings have been added with several patios, walkways and a butterfly garden. In addition to garden club meetings, lectures, demonstrations and plant and garden sales, the facilities can be rented for weddings and other special events.

“We are a non-profit and not in the business of making money, but we use our building to pay the bills. Anything additional goes back to the community and supplements our fundraising efforts,” Maris said. “We have baby showers, Memorial Services, educational sessions and weddings at a very reasonable price. The beautiful buildings and grounds provide a place for people to create memories and is a service we offer to the community.” The Garden Club has been involved in 14 community service projects throughout the Gainesville area, including
working with Shands Rehab Hospital, Haven Hospice, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens and the Matheson Museum. It also has ongoing relationships with the Ronald McDonald House and Habitat for Humanity Women Build. “We take care of the front entrance to Ronald McDonald House on a monthly basis. It involves replanting as needed, pulling weeds, trimming, and replenishing mulch. The flowers we planted coordinate with their sign, so it stands out more at their entrance,” Maris said. “We are also working on our 11th Women Build with Habitat for Humanity. the new homeowner gardening tools and a lawnmower while providing education on how to take care of it.” The volunteer organization also focuses on reaching youth and participates in programs at local schools, including helping with a vegetable garden at Kanapaha Middle School. Recently, volunteers provided a session on wildflowers with about 15 Girl Scouts at Queen of Peace. “We taught them how to identify wildflowers, and what they mean to our environment. Then we showed them how to shuck seeds and planted them on the property,” Maris said. “In the spring, we con-

ducted a design workshop where the girls created a flower arrangement in a coffee mug for Mother’s Day. This was a small project but a good way for us to teach youth about gardening and the club.” In addition, members are making an impact on sustainable projects. The club donated $1,000 to the Duval Community Garden, where residents care for raised beds and grow their own food. their own food and uses gardening as horticulture therapy. “They needed to get the project started and we committed funds to help them with materials for the beds,” Maris said. “This is what our niche is; we don’t raise a lot of money, but we try to make an impact on small garden projects.” The efforts of members of the club have not gone unnoticed. Last year, the Gainesville Garden Club earned recognition as the “Garden Club of the Year” by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and finished second in the Deep South Region. The Second Annual “Aged to Perfection” fundraiser will be held from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, September 6 at the Gainesville Garden Clubhouse: 1350 NW 75th Street, Gainesville. There is no charge for the event, but donations will be accepted to benefit a Gold Star Families Memorial Marker. “Our bylaws include that we will have an open house each September to welcome community members. I presented the idea last year to pair it with an environmentally friendly auction in one event,” Maris said. “Aged to Perfection” will include wine, hors d’oeuvres, sweets and live music. There will also be a silent auction with a variety of repurposed vintage home and garden, and floral items. Last year, over 100 items were available to bid on in the silent auction. A donation drop-off for items is scheduled from 10 a.m. to Noon, Friday, August 17 at the Garden Clubhouse. The idea to have the event benefit the Gold Star Families Memorial Marker came after Maris met Gold Star Mom Betty Sue Vincent at a Fun with Flowers event. Betty Sue and her husband Lee suffered the loss of their 26-year-old son, Marine PFC Donald “Wayne” Vincent. He died in 2009 due to injuries on the battlefield in Afghanistan. “The National Garden Clubs has a program for the Gold Star Families Memorial Markers. The Vincents have been very instrumental in getting this project going for one here,” Maris said. “They are remarkable people who have withstood the loss of their child, who gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life for our country.” Lee expressed the importance of having this memorial marker. “It is important for me now as a Gold Star Father and us as a Gold Star Family to have appropriate recognition for our loved one. It is a good way for the community to acknowledge the price that has been paid by members of this community for the very freedoms we all enjoy on a daily basis,” he said. “We know many Gold Star Families. Every day is Memorial Day for us; it’s not just once a year.” His wife added that the marker also provides an education to the public. “Many people don’t know what a Gold Star Family is and it is important to educate them. There is a small group of mothers in the Gainesville area that are American Gold Star Mothers and we are proud to provide some of the funding for this marker,” she said. “We are appreciative to the August 2018

Embracing Life Parts Unknown
P
arts Unknown, an award-winning series hosted by Anthony Bourdain, focused on traveling to unexplored locations. Bourdain broke the traditional correspondent mold with his unique style. He shared native cuisines and customs in a relaxed local setting. Enlightened viewers learned how all humans have the same basic needs. Bourdain was an advocate, author, celebrity chef, reporter and travel documentarian. He was also a father, friend and recovering drug addict. Most recently he became a suicide statistic. We shared similar interests, philosophies and life tragedies. Even though his were on a much grander scale, I felt a connection with this soul. Parts Unknown served as my mini-vacation and escape. He validated my yearning to try different foods and search for the unordinary. Bourdain’s belief parallels my current travel philosophy. He said, “I learned a long time ago that trying to micromanage the perfect vacation is always a disaster. That leads to terrible times.” My over-planned trips were not terrible, just unnecessarily stressful. For years I planned trips for a large Girl Scout Troop. Cell phones, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Google did not exist. It was a constant cycle of booking trips, buying supplies, creating itineraries, following safety rules and fundraising. My objective was perfection – a goal I never accomplished. Ironically, the imperfect excursions
are the most memorable. Twenty-years later we still recall our favorite camping catastrophe. An unexpected storm hit in the early morning hours. One by one our tents were blown down. Like sardines, we hunkered down in the public shower until
an important highlight of those quests. Once, I got lost (by myself ) in the jungle of Costa Rica. Even for me, that was a bit too much, and I will not do that again. El Salvador was my most exhilarating excursion. An adventurous friend and I were invited on a remote surfing trip, even though we do not surf. Pupusas (stuffed corn tortillas) and garrobo (iguana) were on the approved American menu. Around-the-clock armed guards surrounded the encampment and we were warned not to leave alone. I must have banked some Brownie points, as Cebolla (a local guide), stopped by the compound. We trusted him to share the beauty and bleakness of his country on a private unforgettable daylong trip.
Our most powerful unknown body part is the brain. Perhaps, Bourdain’s intriguing way of introducing folks to unfamiliar regions will serve an even greater purpose with his suicide. daylight. By laughing and telling stories, we survived the elements. I did a lot of praying that night but learned there is more to life than following a strict schedule. Another of Bourdain’s quotations is now my mantra. Those words of wisdom are, “Sometimes the greatest meals on vacations are the ones you find when Plan A falls through.” Regular readers of this column know that I am notorious for getting lost. Even with today’s electronic aids (not available when I was a scout leader), I still take unintended detours. Alternative routes not only occur while on vacation, but almost daily. I rarely get frustrated anymore. My answer to resolving the problem is to stop at a neighborhood restaurant and regroup. Like Bourdain, I find them to be gourmet gemstones. I have been blessed with some international travel. Guided overseas tours are amazing, as everything is planned. Carving out free time and exploring places not on the agenda has become
Like Bourdain, I share my journeys. By optimistically revealing my personal twists and terrifying turns, I hope to illustrate common human hurdles. My ultimate goal, however, is to discover how to embrace dark events and evoke positive changes. Shane (my beloved nephew) recently lost his battle with depression, via suicide. Both my nephew and Bourdain were masters at disguising their disorders until it was too late. The public stigma was simply too painful. Our most powerful unknown body part is the brain. Perhaps, Bourdain’s intriguing way of introducing folks to unfamiliar regions will serve an even greater purpose with his suicide. Let’s pray that his tragic death awakens society to the urgent need for research into the mysterious realm of mental illnesses. s Donna Bonnell is a freelance writer who moved to Newberry in 1983. Einstein School How 3−D Printing Helps Keep the Mission in Focus Founded in 1999, The Einstein School was started with the very specific and unique mission of serving the needs of students in the Alachua County area with language or speech impairments, dyslexia or other language based reading difficulties. Founded by Dr. Tim Conway and Zack Osbrach, The Einstein School is a tuition free charter school designed for students grades 2-8 who are struggling academically due these difficulties. Tasked with helping these children increase their language skills to meet their unique potential, the dedicated staff is a family of caring professionals who help these students succeed in and out of the classroom. “We’re not only here to help these great kids become better readers and excel in their academic pursuits,” said Sara Flint Assistant Principal “we’re also here to introduce them to the skills needed to work in an everchanging job market.” Knowing that mission and understanding the school’s dedication to their students, recently caught the eye of a local non-profit known as New Technology Made Simple Now – whose goal is to introduce the world of 3-D printing to veterans, seniors, disabled citizens and underserved youth through their mission of bringing people together to improve their lives through technology. “I think it’s important for kids, even at the elementary school level, to understand this ever progressing

technology,” said Janalyn Peppel, Program Coordinator of New Technology Made Simple Now. “Having the opportunity to come into a school like The Einstein School and provide a sneak peak into how this technology works and the potential real life applications is an amazing opportunity. With the generous support of the SunState Community Foundation we were able to provide access to technology that will expose them to new areas of augmented reality, coding, computer-aided design and 3D scanning. We use 3D scanning as a tool to spark imagination that will lead to unlimited potential in these students.” “The idea is to keep it simple with our initial introduction to the kids,” said Janalyn. “We start by bringing in a 3D printer, holding a small demonstration and print things they can relate to, a star wars figure or something from a popular video game. Then we show them how that same process can be used to print a model for a science fair project, a wheel for a toy or something else entirely. It doesn’t take long for them to see how they could integrate this budding technology into their everyday lives.” Janalyn has been holding these hour-long demonstrations in a few area schools but leaving the printer at that school for kids to really use, teachers to integrate into curricula and for schools to adopt as part of an overall lesson plan hasn’t been feasible – until now. “We’re so thankful for SunState Federal Credit Union and their commitment to our community,” said Sara Flint from The Einstein School. “Thanks to their charitable foundation, SunState has donated an entire printing system to be permanently installed at our school. This will give us the ability to integrate this technology into many of our daily classes.” Having the printer permanently installed at The Einstein School will allow students and teachers alike to play, experiment and integrate this technology into their classes and assignments. With a wealth of online material available, teachers are now able to use prewritten lesson plans to enhance core math and science classes. As a locally insured credit union, SunState Federal Credit Union and its charitable foundation has always been dedicated to funding projects that make a difference in our community. From their Charity of the Month award to projects like the one Janalyn recently developed, SSFCU believes in investing in local programs that will improve our community. “When we approached SunState about potentially funding this initiative for The Einstein School, we were cautiously optimistic,” said Janalyn. “It’s just a perfect fit. SunState wants to help our local schools and we had a program in need of a sponsor. Our hope is that SunState becomes the first of many area businesses that could help us put a 3D printer in every school in our area.” SunState’s investment in this initiative is just the beginning, as they hope it will encourage other local businesses to follow the model that the foundation has established. SunState believes in the work Janalyn and her foundation have started and by documenting the success The Einstein School has and ways the school implements that program into their everyday curriculum, is an important step in securing additional sponsors and grants. By supporting this initiative, future donations, grants and sponsorships will help New Technology Made Simple serve many other veterans, seniors, disabled citizens and underserved youth. For more information on how you could help sponsor a similar program, contact Janalyn Peppel at Programs@NewTechNow.org or call 857-331-5018.

A Farmer’s Vacation
H
ere’s a little known secret: farmers hardly ever take a vacation, and if the truth be told—they don’t care. My father once told me as he stood in his field of knee-high corn, “I have the best job in the world, out in nature every day, not stuck in a room behind a desk.” My father, uncles and grandfathers were all farmers. At our holiday gatherings it was common knowledge that after the noon meal was served and the women were cleaning up the dishes, the men would depart for their homes. They would be gone for a few hours to feed the animals, milk the cows, or do any other chores that needed to be done. Then they returned just in time to set out leftovers for the evening meal. Farmers are tied to their land in a way that may be hard for city dwellers to understand. It is as much a part of their being as DNA is to our bodies. A vacation away from their land doesn’t even enter their minds. Occasionally a farmer’s wife may finally cajole him into reluctantly agreeing to one, but that is a very rare occurrence. And that vacation doesn’t last very long.
16
August 2018
So it was for me as I was growing up. I don’t think I even understood the word “vacation” or the concept of getting away to relax. That seemed like a lot of work and expense, to drive somewhere to relax. All we had to do was walk out our front door and take a walk in the woods. Nothing is more relaxing than that. My summers were filled with fun pursuits such as catch-
ing lightning bugs in a jar, building sandcastles in my sand pile, taking boat rides on the river in my dad’s boat, and playing with my pets. My mother used to say, “People would pay to vacation here in a place along the river like this.” And I think she was right. Then, things changed when my father had his first heart attack. It was during the harvest—the most stressful time
of the year for a farmer. It’s when long hours are spent in the fields, working against time and nature, to reap the harvest before winter sets in. Luckily it was an angina attack and was caught in time, but the doctor gave stern orders to my mother to get him away from the stress of the harvest. When the doctor told her this, it was like he was telling her to take her husband on a trip to the moon. It just didn’t register as a feasible request. The doctor assured her it was absolutely necessary, and after making arrangements for the harvest to be completed by neighbors and family, we set about making plans for our first vacation. But where to go? We were presented with an opportunity that never even crossed our minds before this. It felt like the whole world had suddenly opened up, and the concept was a little overwhelming. Then my parents remembered many years prior when my father’s brother was stationed in the Navy at Key West, Florida. My father drove his parents down to visit my uncle, and he said it was beautiful. So the decision was made. We were headed to the very southernmost point of the U.S. I was in high school at the time, and luckily I was granted time off by my teachers since it was a family emergency and I had maintained good grades for the semester. I was given assignments to work on while we were away. I happily packed my suitcase and prepared for the journey. When my mother checked on my progress, she asked me why I had seniortimesmagazine.com
only packed winter clothing! Since it was early November in the Midwest, I had no idea that people were wearing swimsuits and shorts in Key West. Talk about living a sheltered life. After this experience, a winter trip to Key West became our annual ritual. My father had recovered enough that on the following years he was allowed to finish the harvest before leaving for Florida to relax. We timed it to coincide with my winter break
from school. Over the years my parents made friends with the other snowbirds who made the journey south during the winter. After several years traveling by car they even invested in a small RV, becoming known by the locals as “Honorary Conchs.” My father spent many winters basking in the sun on the beach in Key West. I’m sure that this vacation spot added years to his life. For that, this farmer’s daughter will always be grateful. s

or many families, the annual vacation may center on family reunions in a nearby town—or hosted as a picnic in their own backyard. This was the case for our family as I was growing up. Many times we would travel half a day’s journey to neighboring areas and meet up with relatives. The summer sunshine made for pleasant afternoons in backyards catching up with family news, eating tasty homemade treats and drinking ice tea or lemonade. After the meal would be card games, horseshoe tournaments, water balloon fights and afternoon watermelon feasts. When the day was done, we would sometimes stay overnight in the home of an aunt or uncle. The following year, we might return the favor and host the reunion at our home.
K YA R D B BQ PICNIC
My mom had a few favorite recipes for these picnics, and they were usually easy to prepare and carry to the reunion. One of these recipes was for her barbeque sandwiches. The barbeque could be made up a day or so in advance and heated up on the day of the picnic. The use of a crockpot made it easy to transport and once plugged in, the barbeque stayed warm for those who desired second helpings all afternoon. Today it may be tempting to buy premade barbeque sauce from the grocery store and just add that to browned ground beef, but to prepare for a crowd of hungry picnickers that may add up to quite an expense. This recipe creates a delicious flavor from scratch and you can tailor it to your own taste, mild or hot. Simple to do—and economical too!
For those of you who are looking for a healthier non-beef version, it is easy to switch out the ground beef for ground turkey. It has a slightly “lighter” flavor, but just as delicious. Just be sure to drain off the fat once either meat is browned before adding the ingredients for the sauce. My mom and grandmother always added a little sugar to recipes made with tomatoes or tomato sauces. It seems to counter the acidity of tomatoes and make the flavor smoother. However, the sugar can be omitted if you are watching your sugar intake. That is the beauty of this recipe. You can add or remove ingredients to make it your own. Happy travels, happy memories—and bon appétit!

BACKYARD BARBEQUE Makes around 24 sandwiches, more or less, depending upon the size of the buns. INGREDIENTS: 3 pounds ground beef chuck (or ground turkey) ½ -1 large Vidalia onion 2 tablespoons chopped green pepper 1 tablespoon sugar (optional) 2 cans tomato soup (10 ¾ oz. size) 2 cups ketchup 1 teaspoon chili powder (add more little by little until the desired intensity) Salt and pepper to taste METHOD: Chop the desired amount of onion and green pepper. Select a large skillet to brown the meat, adding the onion and green pepper when the meat is nearly done browning. Drain off the fat and juices from the skillet. The steam and juices can burn your hands while doing this, so be sure to use an oven mitt and a strainer. If the meat is excessively fat or juicy, you can spread several paper towels on a cookie sheet and let the meat sit there awhile to absorb the liquid. Once the meat is ready to return to the large skillet add the tomato soup and ketchup, stirring while making the additions over a medium heat. Once the sauce is stirred in and has begun heating, you can add the optional sugar and then the chili powder. Be sure to add the chili powder one teaspoon at a time, stirring and tasting after each addition. Chili powder is very hot/spicy, and once it is added to the recipe it stays. My mother would always say, “The safe way is to add a bit and taste a lot.” Once the flavor is just what you desire, let the recipe simmer on low for a while, stirring occasionally. This will blend all the ingredients together nicely, and is precisely when the added sugar does its job of mellowing out the acidity of the tomatoes. But if you choose to omit the sugar, the flavor will still be delicious. Serve with buns and pickles, along with other picnic sides. Fresh sweet corn and coleslaw are always a fan favorite! Now go out there and enjoy the good ol’ summertime before it comes to an end! And remember, there’s nothin’ like home cookin’… s

ummertime may be all-too-quickly coming to a close, but it isn’t too late to take advantage of local parks and destinations perfect for a little getaway. These local spots in Gainesville and Ocala are perfect for soaking up the last summer rays while picnicking, walking, biking and more.
DEVIL’S MILLHOPPER STATE PARK 4732 Millhopper Rd | Gainesville, FL | 32653 This state park has become a staple for locals and visitors of the city of Gainesville since the 1880s. In addition to a picnic area filled with tables and grills beneath the cover of oak trees, the park works to bring education into its natural settings. The main building located in the front of the park features an education center, and trails around the park offer signs that share what species of plant and animal visitors might be able to spot. The sinkhole of Devil’s Millhopper is a 120-foot bowl that leads into what appears to be a tropical rainforest; unfortunately, this area is still closed for damages incurred during Hurricane Irma. SWEETWATER WETLAND PARK 325 SW Williston Road | Gainesville, FL | 32608 Sweetwater is a hidden gem just outside of the Gainesville City Limit. With its covered trails and sitting areas, this park may not be your typical picnic spot, but the wide-open landscape provides the perfect scenery to enjoy a peaceful adventure. According to sweetwaterwetlands.org, this park was created in order to improve water quality of Paynes Prairie and the Florida Aquifer. This area is home to a great diversity of species, and the City of Gainesville included an educational area at the entrance of the trail, so visitors can learn how the species are connected to themselves and a larger ecosystem. The park hours are 7a.m. to sunset every day at a cost of $5 per vehicle and $2 for pedestrians and cyclists.

The park takes the serenity of their space very seriously; the keepers ask that those who adventure to the park limit their noise level. There is no cost associated with going to this park, and the space offers wide open fields, benches, paved pathways and water and restroom facilities for the convenience of visitors. SANTOS TRAILHEAD AND CAMPGROUND 3080 SE 80th St | Ocala, FL | 34480 For those more interested with connecting with nature directly, Santos Trailhead and Campground offers a series of camp sites and hiking areas throughout the Ocala area designated to bring visitors close to nature with countless trails for walking and biking (and even horseback riding). Pavilions are offered throughout the park to escape the summer heat, where seating can be found at one of the many picnic tables within the series of parks. Pets are also welcome to enjoy the depths of central Florida’s nature. Some visitors take advantage of being so close with nature to paint or gaze at the diversity of bird and insect species. The Division of Recreation and Parks has also ensured that this landscape is accessible to all, but those needing additional assistance can fill out an Accommodation Request at floridastateparks. org. The park gate closes at 6p.m. daily during daylight savings; however, because this park is also a campground, visitors can choose to stay overnight and can arrive later than 6p.m. with a reservation. Who says you have travel the globe in order to have a vacation? Experience these local parks with a picnic basket in hand, and there will more than likely be a friendly Live Oak offering you some refreshing shade. I’ll take that over U.S. Customs any day! s

Many Albuquerque visitors land at the city’s convenient Sunport airport, rent a car and promptly drive an hour north to Santa Fe, seeing Albuquerque only from the freeway. That’s a pity because Albuquerque is one of the most delightful small towns in America, full of regional character, delicious New Mexican regional cuisine (oh those chiles!) and plenty of local color. It is a small and attractive city that welcomes visitors with an endless supply of attractions that are worthy of exploration. It is quite practical to combine your Albuquerque trip with a visit to stylish Santa Fe because the convenient and economical RailRunner commuter-rail service makes it easy. downtown Santa Fe daily. Home to the world-famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta when hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies for over a week each October, Albuquerque is close to the imposing Sandia Mountains and is surrounded by history and recreational opportunities from golf courses, hiking, biking and skiing. Awaiting visitors are many microbreweries, wineries, a kitschy Old Town, good shopping for native American and western items, lots of Native American culture and fascinating displays of the city’s Western heritage in museums, shops and architecture. Bisected by historic Route 66, New Mexico’s largest city has 310 days of sunshine annually and is a simply smart place to explore. seniortimesmagazine.com

We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

Enjoying Act Three Quantum Leaps in Cancer Treatment
T
here is good news and bad news on cancer, a disease that hit me in 1969. The bad news first: For 35 million Seniors 65 or older, cancer incidence is 10 times greater than for younger persons. In 2018, 1,735,350 new cases of cancer are expected by the National Cancer Institute, and 609,640 will die from the disease. The good news is that we are closer than ever before to curing cancer. An amazing drug has been developed that activates the immune system, and it is now being used in conjunction with chemotherapy. Dr. Leena Ghandi of NYU’s Cancer explains that, in immunotherapy, checkpoint inhibitors unleash the patient’s own immune system to kill malignant cells. The treatment costs more than $100,000 per year, and most patients stay on the drug for two years. Only half of them benefit from it, and there can be serious side effects, like kidney problems. In cases of advanced cancer, only 15% have been helped by immunotherapy. But even one of the immunotherapy’s harshest critics, Dr. Robert M. Wachter of the University of California in San Francisco, reports that patients whose cases were once pronounced hopeless are experiencing Lazarus-like miracles. A man with bone-marrow cancer, once deemed fatal, was saved by immunotherapy. Dr. Roy Herbst, Yale’s chief of medical oncology, stated, “I’ve never seen such a paradigm shift as we’re seeing with immunotherapy.” He explained how im-

munotherapy and chemotherapy work together. “Tumor cells are like bags of hidden proteins that, when exposed, the immune system could use as targets to find and attack cancer. By killing some tumor cells, chemo could pop open the bags, release the contents, and help the immune cells—unleashed by the checkpoint drugs—to identify their prey. It is possible, though, that chemo may kill some immune cells that interfere with the cancer-killing action of other parts of the immune system.”
breaking off from a tumor and spreading. Fortunately, drugs that act on a specific type of blood cell can slow breast-tobrain metastasis. In experiments on mice, the same drugs blocked the progression of glioblastoma brain tumors. Progress in the field of epigenetics, according to the American Society of Hematology, opens many potential avenues, and the journal Nature Genetics confirmed that “cancer-epigenetics [has] come of age . . . as an alternative mechanism of tumor-suppressor inactivation in cancer.” Cancer treatment has come a long way since I underwent radiation for head and neck cancer back in 2002. Radiation killed the grandfather cancer at the base of my tongue, the tumor on the left side of my neck, and a couple of cancerous nodes, but the side effects were devastating, leaving me with no saliva glands, no thyroid, and an epiglottis so damaged that liquid and food got into my lungs, resulting in near-fatal aspiration pneumonia.
For years, the dread of every cancer patient has been that the cancer would metastasize and spread to other parts of the body. Despite such dangers, Dr. Ghandi was optimistic and said, “Going forward, [immunotherapy] will only get better.” Another new option in cancer treatment has sprung from epigenetics, the branch of biology which studies the interaction between genes and their products. Cancer cells can be transformed back to normal rather than having to be destroyed. The drug AG-221 has had a 30% response rate in 159 myeloid leukemia patients. For years, the dread of every cancer patient has been that the cancer would metastasize and spread to other parts of the body, a process that kills nine out of 10 patients with cancer, according to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Now, research into metastasis gives hope that cancer cells will be prevented from
I had to have a gastrointestinal tube inserted in my stomach, subsist on four cans of liquid formula a day, and never eat or drink again for the rest of my life. Some people, it’s important to add, undergo radiation with no such problems. Thank goodness major advances in radiation technology have made it more precise, leading to fewer side effects. But I can honestly say that at 85 I have, 16 years after cancer, made sufficient adjustments to enjoy a life full of friends, fun, community service, spiritual growth, and happiness. I wish the same for all who are now battling cancer. s Ellis Amburn’s biography “Olivia de Havilland and the Golden Age of Hollywood” will be published September 1 and is already up on Amazon for orders.

The Hipp partners with the UF School of Theatre + Dance to bring the acclaimed new play The Wolves to the stage. Ferociously funny, The Wolves is an unflinching depiction of a suburban girls soccer team, and a riveting slice-of-life portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls. A finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize, the Lucille Lortel and Drama League awards for Best Play, as well as for the Outer Critics’ Circle John Gassner Award for Outstanding New American Play, and winner of the 2015 Relentless Award for Playwriting, The Wolves was named one of the year’s best plays by The New York Times. The Hollywood Reporter called it “A firecracker of a play, spilling over with humor, insight and searing pathos.”
“Ain’t Misbehavin’” is one of the most popular, well-crafted revues of all time and winner of the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical. The inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club and that jumpin’ new beat, swing music. “Ain’t Misbehavin’” evokes delightful humor and infectious energy with songs that Waller made famous from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Nine A Musical
September 14 – October 7 Based on Italian director Federico Fellini’s comic masterpiece of biographical filmmaking, 8 1/2, Maury Yeston’s sultry and enchanting musical follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life. Contini is also, after recent box office failures, drifting towards a nervous breakdown, from which he is held back only by the support of his wife, Luisa. As his sanity disintegrates, he drifts into nostalgic reverie, eventually focusing on the formative sexual encounter of his life, which occurred at the age of nine.
OCALA CIVIC THEATRE
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat The beloved musical celebrates its 50th anniversary! This humorous reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors takes him from trials and tribulations to triumph. After his jealous brothers sell him into slavery in Egypt, poor Joseph is unjustly imprisoned. But when his gift of interpreting dreams saves the land from famine, it also miraculously reunites him with his long-lost family. The catchy pop score by Andrew Lloyd Webber features songs like “Any Dream Will Do” and a variety of musical styles from country to calypso, disco to rock. It’s an amazing Technicolor dream of a family-friendly show!

As the weather heats up, make sure you cool down!
“There are a few reasons why older adults are more susceptible to fluid and electrolyte imbalances,” according to the well-known website, AgingCare.com. “With age, our body’s ability to conserve water is reduced. This can make it more difficult to adapt to things like fluctuating temperatures. Additionally, the sense of thirst diminishes with age. By the time someone actually feels thirsty, essential fluids could already be extremely low.” In summer months, to spruce up a distilled or sparkling water, fruit and other natural ingredients can add a fun and refreshing kick. If you are lounging by the pool or staying in, give one or many of these items a try in your next ice cold glass of water!

BOOK REVIEW BY
TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Bearskin: A Novel JAMES A. MCLAUGHLIN c.2018, Ecco $26.99 / $33.50 Canada 344 pages
Sometimes, you just need to get away. Out of your element, far from the usual. A change of scenery is called-for, a temporary life unlike the one you usually live. Or, as in the new book “Bearskin” by James A. McLaughlin, you need new digs that could save your life. Renovating the old cabin was a big job, but Rice Moore had willingly signed on for it. Despite bees, despite high Virginia temperatures and humidity,

despite that he had other tasks to do as caretaker for an Appalachian forest preserve, working on the cabin was a relative pleasure. It sure beat risking his life. On the run from a Mexican drug cartel that hadn’t managed to kill him while he was in jail on set-up charges, Moore hoped that anonymity in Virginia would keep him safe. Then again, it hadn’t helped Apryl, a researcher and his partner, who’d been deeply involved in smuggling unmarked packages and who trusted too much. She’d kept her head down, but someone killed her near the Arizona border. Moore had to admit, Virginia was a nice place to hide. The cabin was at the end of a long private driveway. Surveying the forest was enjoyable, and the job took advantage of Moore’s skills and knowledge. The locals were stand-offish and a few rednecks rankled him, but it wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle. And then he started finding the carcasses. A local mushroomer showed him the first dead bears, paws removed and guts spilled. Later, Moore found other dead animals, and he found tree-stands, and bait. Someone was killing bears for their black-marketed body parts, and they were doing it in pristine forest that was supposed to be off-limits to humans. But as his obsession with finding the bear-killers grew, Moore crossed the wrong people. One of them, a small-
town lawman, did what nobody else had done: research, and he knew who Moore was and why he was in Virginia. And that lawman had a big mouth… “Bearskin” is a little – no, wait, it’s a lot different than your normal thriller. What makes it so is a quite-lengthy passage in which author James A. McLaughlin’s main character trusts a shady source in an uncharacteristic manner and descends into a hazy dream-state obsession that lasts for pages and pages. It seems to tell readers more about Moore and it serves as a bridge to an important part of the story, but it’s weird. Really weird. And yet – the things you find in a normal thriller are all here, times two, which makes the weirdness mostly for-
James A. McLaughlin
givable. Crime, torture, murder, stalking, a heart-pounding chase, it’s all here, mixed in with acres and acres of thick forest that serve, metaphorically, to give readers a safe place to go when this thriller gets too thrilling. And, happily, that’s often, as you’ll see in this book. Your heart will race, your mouth will go dry and if you’re a bedtime reader, “Bearskin” may keep you awake for hours. Beware: you may never want to put this book away. § Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books.
