Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.

Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip. Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.

Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.

Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.

Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. <M Maari rily lyyn befo beefo foree, aagge 6 fore 68 8 See Se ee my sto t ryy at Exxce E xce cep pttio i na nalD Den e tiist stry ryy.ccom om

Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place. ST. FRANCIS PET CARE

Lending a Paw Providing Veterinary Services to Those in Need

by Hayli Zuccola

E

mulating the humanitarian efforts of Saint Francis of Assisi the patron saint of animals, St. Francis Pet Care (SFPC) has aided homeless and low-income pet parents with free veterinary care since its establishment in 2007. Over the last 12 years, the nonprofit had undeniably outgrown their past locations – rapidly increasing from a mere handful of clients to over 500. SFPC was well overdue for a bigger place of their own, and the endeavor of finding a new space finally became a reality earlier this year. Formed with the combined efforts of Dr. Dale Kaplan-Stein, founder of Oaks Veterinarian Hospital; Dr. Natalie Isaza, a clinical professor of shelter medicine at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine; and animal advocate and former First Lady of UF Chris Machen, St. Francis Pet Care, like most nonprofits, started from humble beginnings. Operating with limited space and minimal capabilities in the back of Gainesville’s St. Francis House, the three founders designed the organization with homeless individuals and their furry companions in mind. With the assistance of various grants including one from PetSmart Charities, they were able to expand their reach to help responsible disabled veterans, low-income, special housing and food stamp recipients with all of their pet care needs. Partnering with local veterinary clinics allowed SFPC clients access to surgeries, like spaying or neutering, and emergency care while the nonprofit itself offered free exams, medicine and food to the animals who gave comfort and unconditional love to their poverty-stricken caregivers.

10   August 2019

“We do everything for free. There are no paid volunteers. There are no paid people. Every penny we get goes to the animals and the clients and their care,” said Galey Gravenstein, the treasurer of SFPC. Even though the organization was able to make a difference in the community, SFPC was in dire need of a space that could handle the flourishing demand their services created. Despite changing locations on two separate occasions, they had yet to find a locale that was equipped to meet those requirements. After obtaining the land for their new venture – fittingly situated behind the St. Francis House where it all began – they focused their efforts over the past five years on planning and fundraising. The necessary, though lengthy, process eventually

“These people need these animals more than I do and you do... They give them something to live for.” paid off, and SFPC managed to secure donated and discounted services. Contractors like Charles Perry Partners Inc., CHW Professional Consultants and Walker Architects along with dozens of other businesses and individuals whose gratitude became memorialized on a large plaque outside the now finished clinic. The new 2,000 square-foot structure is unquestionably an improvement from their previous building, which featured a bathroom that acted as an exam room for cats. Some of the seniortimesmagazine.com

advancements in the clinic, which had a grand opening at its new residence at 104 SE 4th Place on March 31, include a main exam room that has space to accommodate six pets at a time, two separate exam rooms – one of which is specifically catered to cats – and a surgical suite, which will allow SFPC to perform their own advanced procedures like spaying, neutering and dentals without having to travel to other veterinary offices. New and improved clinic days, which are held every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon, give clients the chance to bring their pet in for a yearly exam and vaccinations; take advantage of occasionally offered grooming sessions; pick up monthly prescriptions; and get refills on dog and cat food. Of course, the clinic’s beneficial resources aren’t available to just anyone and potential clients have to meet certain eligibilities, which include having no more than two animals at a time and the

12   August 2019

ability to prove that they are in fact low-income. Once accepted, patrons have to follow basic guidelines including visiting once a month for flea and heartworm medication to ensure their pet is getting the proper care it needs. When they aren’t operating out of their new office, SFPC travels to the Southwest Advocacy Group’s Family Resource Center and GRACE Marketplace once a month to provide services to those who are unable to make their Tuesday office hours. Since its founding over a decade ago, SFPC has helped care for around 2,900 animals, which has resulted in its volunteers and veterinarians forming a bond not only with the pets but with their owners. “We are looking out for the pets and the people. The people have really become like family to us,” Gravenstein said. “It’s not just animals; we’re taking care of the people too.” seniortimesmagazine.com

Ralph Carpenter and his scruffy dog Raggs are just one example of long-standing clients who have come through SFPC’s doors and have made a lasting impact on those around them. Though a series of misfortunes brought Carpenter to Gainesville, it’s the companionship of his dog that gives him a purpose in life. “These people need these animals more than I do and you do... They’re their sanity. They give them something to live for. They give them something to focus on and those animals love their owners,” Gravenstein said. “Unconditional love is probably the most important thing.” s

The Garden’s Bounty

A

ugust was always one of my favorite summer months. I think it might have been slightly overlooked by others because the excitement and fun activities of the 4th of July had passed. But to me those last few “dog days” of summer always seemed so sweet as I watched the calendar count down the days to September when my school routine started up again. I loved August because it was a lazy month when there wasn’t much to do besides watch the garden grow or sip a fresh lemonade my mother had hand-squeezed. It was usually too hot to exert much physical activity of any kind – other than walking down to the creek for a dip in the cool water. Of course, our garden did require a good amount of work to make sure it flourished. In early summer, one of my regular chores was to hoe the garden and pull weeds between the plants while the vegetables were establishing their roots. The tomato plants needed careful scrutiny once they began to produce, because the pesky tomato worms would appear almost overnight to chomp away at the tomatoes and their tender leaves. I had

14   August 2019

to remove them by hand from the tomato plants. But once it was August, most of the work was behind us and all that was left to do was watch our garden grow.

Sweet corn was ready for the picking in August. You don’t know the meaning of “fresh” unless you have grown up in the country. My mother would put a big pot of water on to boil while I went out and picked a dozen ears and the salad

makings. Our typical lunch during the summer would be several ears of sweet corn and fresh tomatoes sliced up in a salad. The corn, tomatoes and fresh lettuce would be picked from our garden and served up on the table in 15 minutes or less. Now that’s fresh! I remember how our neighbors would stop by with offerings from their garden. We would share vegetables from our garden as well. It was just what neighbors did back then. My mother’s sister lived just down the road from us. I was an only child, but my aunt had seven children. Since we lived so close, I felt like part of the family with seven brothers and sisters. With a family that size, the garden was an important part of my aunt’s meal planning. Their summer meals consisted of fresh vegetables from the garden, of course, but for the winter months my aunt relied on her canning.   Canning day was quite an operation. My mother would help my aunt with the process. All day they slaved away over the stove in a hot kitchen (no air conditioning back then) preparing the vegetables and placing them in the sterilized jars. You would hear the “ping-ping” as the jars cooled and the lids snapped down securely. That is how you knew that the jars were sealed and safe to store through the winter months. Typically, housewives would store their canned goods on shelves in the basement and that’s what my aunt and grandmother always did. Sometimes they made corn relish or pickled beet recipes and canned those as well. Then there was sweet corn day. That was a production where all the family seniortimesmagazine.com

got involved. My uncle and his sons would go to the sweet corn patch in their pick-up truck and pick all the ears that were ripe and ready to harvest. They would then drive back to the house and find a shady tree to shuck the ears under. The boys would bring bushel baskets of the shucked corn up to the kitchen where large pots of boiling water were waiting on the stove. The ears of corn were rinsed off under the sink faucet where most of the corn silks were removed. Then the corn was dropped into the boiling water where it was blanched for a few minutes. The blanching process would break down enzymes that destroy nutrients and discolor the corn over time. This extra step ensured they would have fresh, frozen corn all winter. After the blanching, the corn would be removed and taken to the family’s bath tub (which had been scrubbed and san-

itized) where the corn was plunged into an ice-cold bath to stop the cooking process. When the corn was ready and cool enough to hold, we girls would go to the table where cutting boards and sharp knives were waiting to cut the kernels off the cob. The kernels were measured by the cupful into plastic bags that had been saved from bread wrappers and other food items all year. There were no zip baggies available in those days – everything was re-purposed. Then off to the large chest freezer my aunt had in her basement, and the family had delicious fresh corn on their dinner table all winter long. It sounds like a lot of work as I write all these steps, but it was actually fun and a ritual we all looked forward to. The garden’s bounty provided more than just food for the winter… it provided treasured family memories as well. s

CHANGE IN YOUR POCKET

A Penny For Your Thoughts The History Of The Lincoln Penny by Gabrielle Calise

F

irst minted on August 2, 1909, the Lincoln Penny is the longest running coin in U.S. history. However, the coin itself has a fascinating history of its own. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt hired sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the country’s currency. SaintGaudens died before his designs could come to fruition. His replacement, a sculptor named Victor David Brenner, created a bronze plaque of President Abraham Lincoln that inspired Roosevelt to put Lincoln on the coin. The new penny design was minted in time to commemorate President Lincoln’s 100th birthday. This design replaced the previous Indian Head American penny. Before the Lincoln penny, the only person to appear on a coin in the United States was a female character named Miss Liberty. When the United States fought in World War II, the government decided to temporarily take the copper and tin out of the penny in order to save resources for the war effort. In 1943, the Lincoln penny was made out of steel and coated with zinc. However, these pennies corroded quickly after the zinc wore off, and the silver color

16   August 2019

looked confusingly similar to the dime. The steel pennies didn’t last long, and the U.S. Mint switched to a brass-alloy penny after a year. The penny finally returned to its original bronze alloy composition in 1947.   The head side of the penny hasn’t changed since the coin was minted. However, the reverse side has changed a few times. To celebrate Lincoln’s 150th birthday, the U.S. Mint issued a new edition of the coin that featured the Lincoln memorial on the tail side. This replaced the wheat penny design, which consisted of two stalks of wheat bending around the words “one cent.”   In 2009, 200 years after Lincoln’s birth, the Mint released four new pennies, each with a different tail side depicting a moment from the former president’s life. The penny designs range from Lincoln’s log cabin home where he was born, to the White House where he served as Commander-in-Chief. While there has been debate about removing the penny from circulation, for now the shiny brown coin will continue to mark President Lincoln’s legacy. s seniortimesmagazine.com

he sun rises and sets on our great state over lakes, rivers, springs, gulfs and ocean waters. In Florida we take care of each other, and we take care of the natural beauty that surrounds us, because Florida is more than theme parks and tourist traps. We are people and communities. One local business is working to strengthen that community spirit through a little…SunState Livin’. SunState Federal Credit Union embodies the spirit that is SunState Livin’; it is so much more than just a bank, or just a financial institution. As a not-for-profit organization, the primary focus of a credit union is to provide community members with the best possible products and services, the lowest possible fees, and the best possible rates. Rather than stockholders raking in the cash, the credit union members are the owners who reap the benefits with fewer fees, lower interest rates and higher returns. Unpaid volunteers sit on the SunState Board of Directors, and each member is an equal owner in the organization.

18   August 2019

SunState Federal Credit Union has a vested interest in Alachua County and the surrounding area – the credit union was originated and grew up here, and it lives here among us to this day. The original 10 charter members of SSFCU all lived and worked in Alachua County. Each put up $5 to give the organization its first $50 in assets. SunState has now grown to serve more than 36,300 members who live, work, worship, or attend school primarily in nine local counties. COMMUNITY SPIRIT The people who work at SSFCU live in and love North Central Florida. They’re your neighbors, friends and family, and charitable contributions are their favorite way to celebrate the place we call home. Each year the SSFCU employees choose their own charities that they donate to through the credit union’s unique payroll deduction and “pay to wear jeans” programs. SSFCU also hosts the 10forTeacher$ program and the seniortimesmagazine.com

Facebook Charity of the Month contests that award donations to different charities throughout the year – as an extension of SunState’s cooperative nature, members and community residents decide where those donations go as opposed to someone at the credit union making the decision. But SSFCU wants to give even more people the chance to decide where donations land, so it’s launching their new SunState Livin’ campaign this summer! SunState Livin’ is designed to give more money to the community while continuing to celebrate all the great things that make Florida, well...Florida. HOW DOES IT WORK? To be a part of the fun, show what SunState Livin’ means to you by picking up a new SunState Livin’ sticker from your local SSFCU branch – there are three different designs available, so you are sure to love one of them! Take a selfie with your SunState Livin’ sticker on the back of your car, boat or RV, even on your favorite cooler, and post it to Instagram with #SunStateFCU.

For each person who tags their selfie, SSFCU will donate $5 to the Employee’s Charities of Choice program, plus you will get a cool SunState Livin’ T-shirt. In addition to the Charities of Choice donation, SSFCU will choose one SunState Livin’ selfie per month and award the winner $100. Then that winner will select a charity of their own choice (must be a 501C3 headquartered in the counties SunState Federal Credit Union serves), and SSFCU will donate $1,000 directly to that charity. So many worthy causes will receive the funding and recognition that will help them do the good work that makes our little corner of the world so wonderful. It’s all about recognizing the amazing work being done right here in our community, and using the credit union’s resources to help those organizations grow. It’s all about… SunState Livin’! SunState Livin’ is a state of mind that we all know and love, and SSFCU is working to bring our community together to make it even better.

Embracing Life Sunshine Happiness or Summertime Blues

D

o you remember Nat King Cole’s 1963 tune, “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer?” Cole’s hit was number six on the Pop chart. People related to his description of their favorite season. “Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer / Those days of soda and pretzels and beer/ You’ll wish that summer could always be here.” Fast forward to 2019 and face facts. Earth’s climate is changing. The summer heat has become unbearable. If given the choice today, (five and one-half decades since Cole’s beloved 1963 song) would most folks simply skip summer? That question became the basis of my most recent mission. Why do extreme temperatures adversely affect humans? Regular readers know my desire is to embrace life’s quandaries. Initially, this quest appeared simple. The Chinese philosophy of yin-yang seemed applicable. In theory, opposite forces are interconnected, creating balance (winter/summer, spring/fall, sun/ moon, dark/light, day/night, hot/cold). I temporarily shrugged off my concerns. Perhaps those who loathe being outside when temperatures top 100 degrees are wimps. When my outdoorsy 9-year-old grandson was distraught, I knew I might be onto something. He said, “Grammy I love the summer, but why is it too hot to play outside?” Digging deeper, I discovered that humans do not crave summer’s heat, rather

20   August 2019

nourishment from the sun. Researchers report that individuals residing in areas with excessive snow or rain (accompanied by dark skies) are apt to experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Serotonin is soaked into the body via sunshine. Less sunshine equals lower energy levels. Basically, SAD is depression due to lack of sunshine. The proverbial light bulb flashed on in my brain. during the spring and summer. Heat waves cause more deaths than any other extreme weather condition. Confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, muscle cramps and vomiting are symptoms of heat exhaustion. If conditions worsen, a dangerous heat stroke could occur next. High body temperatures, hot skin, profuse sweating, seizures and/or unconsciousness could lead to death. Is the remedy to stay hydrated? Mild dehydration can cause negative moods. Our bodies detoxify when we replenish lost fluids with sufficient water. This purification process allows our brains to amass tryptophan. Tryptophan, an amino acid, converts to serotonin. The lack of hydration causes a shortage of tryptophan, contributing to anxiety, bad temper and depression. Serotonin, an essential chemical, enhances happiness and wellbeing. My suspicions were confirmed when I read an article in an online newsletter, “PsychCentral.” Associate Editor Therese Borchard wrote, “The summer’s brutal heat, bright light and long days can affect a person’s circadian rhythm and contribute to depression for the opposite reasons that winter conditions do.” Further investigation uncovered alarming details. Extreme heat can bring out the worst in people. High temperatures and humidity are not only uncomfortable but have serious effects on our mental and physical health, cognitive ability and trigger human aggression. The saddest statistic is that suicide completions, peak

winter, create their own serotonin yin and yang. For year-round Floridians, simple modifications can help – avoid soda, sugar and processed foods. Superficial sweeteners and preservatives are detrimental to mood disorders. Sugar is poison for individuals with depression. It causes an uneven supply of blood sugar. Ti red o f A ntibio tics for UTIs? Brea k t h e Cyc le Na t u r a l l y !

A

nyone who has suffered a urinary tract infection (UTI) knows the toll it takes on their quality of life. And sadly, UTIs are all too common for those 55-plus. Doctors typically treat UTIs with antibiotics, but there is growing concern that bacteria are becoming resistant to the antibiotics, especially with repeated use.

But finally, there is a clinically proven, drugfree, safe dietary supplement that is now recommended to help stop UTIs before they start. In May 2019, the American Urological Association included cranberry with a special note on the presence of Proanthocyanidins (PACs) for UTI prevention. PACs are the active molecules from within cranberries that stop bacteria from sticking to the bladder and urethra. As a result, bacteria are flushed out when you empty your bladder.

Not your average cranberry supplement • Utiva contains 36mg of PACs – the dosage necessary to protect against UTIs • Made from select high-quality North American cranberries • 100% natural, drug-free & doctor recommended

Break the dreaded cycle of recurring UTIs safely, without drugs Imagine stopping the cycle of dread and pain, the multiple trips to the physician, and yet more antibiotics, which wreak havoc on your system. Specialists across North America are recommending Utiva for UTI prevention and the reviews from patients are coming in daily about how Utiva is giving them back their lives. Take back control naturally and minimize the chances of another UTI by staying hydrated and taking Utiva once a day.

COURAGE AND HONOR

Veteran Russell Pickett Infantryman Recently Recognized by the President is Last from Omaha Beach’s “Suicide Wave” Company A

apt. Taylor Fellers stood before his 200-man Company A, planned to be the first infantry unit to hit Omaha Beach, and described the dire challenge ahead. Some of you are going to lose legs, Fellers said, some arms, some eyesight, and many of you won’t be coming back at all. The captain then made an offer: Any man can remove himself without penalty or shame. “Didn’t have a one go up. None of us went,” recalled Russell Pickett, then a 19-year-old private in the famed company (of the 1st Battalion in the 29th Division’s 116th Infantry Regiment) and today, at 94, its only known survivor from the D-Day landings. “Course, we was all enthused, excited, and I don’t know how to tell you what we felt like.” By the end of June 6, 1944, the severity of Fellers’ forecast had come true: The attack on heavily defended Omaha, the deadliest of the five D-Day beachheads, resulted in 2,400 killed, wounded, or missing U.S. troops. Official casualty figures don’t get more specific, but a detailed account of the first wave from The Atlantic magazine in 1960 estimates Company A’s dead at two-thirds within the first 30 minutes — killed mostly by artillery; machine-gun fire, which in at least one case mowed down the men inside a

landing craft as soon as its ramp dropped; and drowning. Such devastation earned that initial attack the nickname “the suicide wave,” depicted in the 1998 movie “Saving Private Ryan.” Among the Company A dead were 19 men all from the small town of Bedford, Virginia, and Fellers. “He didn’t get out of the water on D-Day,” Pickett said. “They got him.” On surviving himself, Pickett remembered once telling a TV interviewer, “‘I have a praying momma and two praying aunts, and that’s what got me out’ — and I still believe that same way.”

L

ike many across the world, I became aware of Pickett

when President Trump recognized him among the veterans on stage at the 75th anniversary ceremony for D-Day in France. “Russell Pickett is the last-known survivor of the legendary Company A,” Trump told the thousands gathered at the Normandy American Cemetery, just down from Omaha Beach. “And today, believe it or not, he has returned once more to these shores to be with his comrades. Private Pickett, you honor us all with your presence.” The crowd then cheered for Pickett as he stood from his wheelchair — with the help of others, including French President Emmanuel Macron — and hugged Trump. seniortimesmagazine.com

“Tough guy,” Trump joked upon returning to the microphone. On a whim, as I watched the ceremony on TV, I searched Pickett’s name and discovered that, by sheer coincidence, he’s from my hometown of Soddy-Daisy, outside Chattanooga — less than 10 minutes from where I sat while visiting my mom’s house. I gave him several days to get back from Europe and settled in, called his number from the phonebook, and through his kind wife, Marilyn, we worked to get an interview scheduled. Seated in his kitchen, occasionally shifting his body in pain, Pickett explained that he was initially hesitant about making the 10-day trip — his third back — because he had been getting through some ailments.

He eventually decided, though, he’d be able to go, and once there, among the meals and ceremonies and hundreds of autographs and being waited on, he felt like royalty. On being personally recognized by the president, which came as a complete surprise, Pickett said, “To think that I’d been kidding with some of them about being a Tennessee hillbilly, and here I am shaking hands with the president. … I might’ve backed out had I [known] because, you know, that’s not ever been me: to seek glory for anything.” After my interview with her husband, Marilyn Pickett added, “It was amazing to see him be blessed that way. When I saw him and when President Trump hugged him, that just — it just broke my heart because I was proud for him.” seniortimesmagazine.com

R

ussell Pickett was born in 1925

in the Daisy community (Soddy and Daisy didn’t join together until 1969). His dad died when he was only 11. So early on, he and his oldest brother had to take on odd jobs — on a farm, at a coal mine, wherever — to help care for the family, which included another brother with a crippled leg, three sisters, and their mom. Eventually, as conflict was heating up abroad and then Pearl Harbor attacked in 1941, the oldest brother joined the Army. “When he went in, I kind of idolized him since he was the oldest brother [and with my] father gone,” Pickett said. “So my big desire was to get on in” the military. But he hadn’t yet reached 18, and his mom wouldn’t give the parental consent for him to join early. So when he was filling out his draft questionnaire, he marked himself as unemployed — even though he was

He took his basic training in Alabama and had more in the Northeast, and by January 1944, he had made it to Plymouth, England, as part of the buildup for the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Training in southern England was filled with rigor and included a 20-mile march wearing maybe 65 pounds of equipment. “That was making us train for what we was going to reach in com-

bat,” Pickett said. “The infantry didn’t have any breaks at all in combat, you know. We’re just there to live or die.” Pickett’s job on D-Day was to be a flamethrower. During a training exercise soon before, he was running forward with the fuel and pressure tanks on his back, and a fellow soldier was to use Bangalore torpedoes to blow open a ditch. But twice the amount of explosive was used, and something hit Pickett under his chin, knocking him out. “When I came to, the lieutenant was hollering, ‘Where’s my flamethrower?’” Even though he was hurt and bleeding, he still managed to get through ditch and complete the training. “I said, ‘Well, I think I can make the rest of it.’” This was only the first of four injuries, the other three coming during combat.

A

fter seemingly real training scenarios that took

him out over the waters of the English Channel, Pickett knew the actual D-Day was coming because of the equipment that was being loaded aboard ship and then especially after Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s speech, heard over the ship’s intercom. “Let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking,” Eisenhower said in conclusion on the morning of June 6, according to the speech’s transcript. Pickett’s Company A crossed the channel aboard the British ship Empire Javelin, and close to 6:30 a.m., they loaded into their landing craft amid heavy seas. His tanks on his back, his assistant flamethrower seated next to him, Pickett stayed especially low so a bullet wouldn’t strike a tank and blow up the boat. seniortimesmagazine.com

Water had come over the sides and was swashing over the floor with vomit from the men. Some used their helmets to bail out the water because the boat’s pumps weren’t working. But that would soon prove to be among the least of their worries. The Allied aerial and naval bombardment beforehand hadn’t hit the German defenses right at the beach, and only two of 29 U.S. tanks had made it through the rough seas to shore. So Company A’s seven 30-man landing craft were heading into the meat grinder almost by themselves. Pickett’s job was to use his flamethrower to take out the Germans within a specific concrete gun emplacement. And then he and his assistant, who was carrying an extra fuel tank, were to scale a hill and take out a much bigger emplacement — “a suicide job,” he said of being a flamethrower. But right as Pickett’s landing craft was about to hit the beach, an artillery explosion knocked it out. At the shoreline, his assistant and another man worked to get his tanks off him, the assistant later told him at a reunion. Pickett doesn’t remember if he was unconscious, but it was certainly a haze after the explosion. When he started to get his bearings, he saw a dead body maybe 12 feet from him. “I like to think that he helped with me” surviving after the explosion. Now totally on sand, he was having trouble getting his legs to work and could hardly crawl. Weapons fire was going off around him, and all he had was his combat knife and .45 pistol, which he “couldn’t hit the side of a barn with.” As landing craft carried in more troops, Pickett was able to get in one and head back to Empire Javelin with five other wounded, including one whose shoulder and arm had been mutilated by a direct shell hit and died on the way. “I fault myself a whole lot” for not making it to the gun emplacements, he said. “I never was one to give up. I still don’t give up,” he said. “And like I tell them all the time, ‘Give out, but don’t give up. When you give up, you’re gone.’”

D

espite the injury primarily to his right leg, the now

private first class rejoined his decimated company eight days after D-Day, when only a little more than a mile inland had been taken by the Allies. Armed now with a rifle, he began to march through France on the front lines, encountering Germans “three times a day, I guess,” he laughed. “When we got to overpowering them, they backed up to the next [hedgerow], then we had to take that one,” he said. “So every one of them was a battle royal all through there for the first weeks.” Sometimes, he added, “you come eyeball to eyeball. Sometimes you had bayonets on and all this kind of stuff.” Pickett didn’t stop himself from discussing just about anything, but he made clear his line is specific enemy casualties. “Let me tell you something: that people think it’s fun to the guy that takes a life,” he said. “At that moment, it is; two hours later, get down [when the solemnity hits you]. We’re bound to

have to do that because it’s him or me, see. “So that’s what they do to the young men that goes in there. That’s what they make out of them: fighters. … By the time I got there into combat, well, I was just a combat soldier, and if I see a man, I shot at him, hoping he didn’t see me.” On July 2, holding position outside the French city of SaintLô, Pickett and four other troops spotted a combat patrol of 20 or 30 Germans coming over a hedgerow. “They didn’t know we’s there, so we was first to open fire on them, and we had a pretty good battle,” he said. In it, though, he took a blast from a German grenade and was again put out of action, mostly from extreme blood loss. Yet after 21 days of recovering, he returned, in time to help take an important hill at Vire, France, for which his battalion earned its second presidential citation (the first was for D-Day). By the time Pickett was finally taken out of the war for good — from an artillery blast outside Brest, France — Company A seniortimesmagazine.com

had been “wiped out three times,” he said, and it was mostly if not almost all replacements. When he woke up from the artillery injury 12 days later in a hospital in England, the staff thought him to be in worse shape than he thought, and he figured he’d again be rejoining the fight. He was still 19. “I never was one to give up. I still don’t give up,” he said. “And like I tell them all the time, ‘Give out, but don’t give up. When you give up, you’re gone.’”

P

ickett spent weeks recovering in England and then

served as an orderly in another hospital there through the German surrender in May 1945 and until June, when he returned to the U.S. and, about six months later, was discharged. For years, he worked primarily in construction, but his wartime injuries, mainly to his back, were proving too much. So he trained in electronics and opened Pickett’s Television Service in Soddy-Daisy with a cousin and operated it for 29

years, retiring in 1989. He’s dad to two children and two stepchildren all from his wife who died many years ago, and granddad to he doesn’t know how many grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-greatgrandkids. “Yes, what he did in 1944 and ‘45 is amazing — not just D-Day, but the month after,” said Josh Roe, an anchor for Chattanooga’s ABC affiliate, who has interviewed hundreds of veterans for his “Price of Freedom” series, including recently Pickett around his trip to France. “But one thing that I’ve gotten to experience is talking to his family. … The amount of just love and respect they have for that man, it’s impressive to see.” Family-oriented, faith-driven, welcoming — but perhaps the characteristic that most defines Pickett is humble. “I don’t know that it changes anything, really,” he said of being the last from Company A. “I believe in the Lord, and I just believe it’s blessings from him that I’m even here now.” s August 2019

Tinseltown Talks An Ernie Kovacs Centennial by Nick Thomas

O

pening last summer in Jamestown, New York, the National Comedy Center will launch an exhibition honoring comedian Ernie Kovacs beginning with a Festival on August 7-11 (see www.comedycenter.org). “It’s the centennial of Ernie’s birth this year, so a great time to recognize this influential comedian,” said Laura LaPlaca, the Center’s Director of Archives. “The Kovacs’ exhibit will remain until summer 2020.” Though he died tragically in a single car accident at just 42, Kovacs would leave his mark on comedy for decades. Like other pioneers of early television in the ‘50s who were exploring its boundaries such as Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, and Steve Allen, Kovacs pressed it further by satirizing and lampooning the new medium. “Unlike other comedians of the day who started on radio and basically put three walls up and created a TV show, Ernie did something different,” said Josh Mills, whose mother (Edie Adams) was married to Kovacs at the time of his death. “Ernie had a cockeyed perspective of the world that few comedians have matched, a very surreal and offbeat way of looking at comedy.” This was most evident in Kovacs’ TV shows which were broadcast on several networks throughout the ‘50s and early ‘60s in various versions and formats. They often featured innovative skits written by Kovacs which inspired later TV comedy formats. “I’ve had conversations with Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam who grew up in Minneapolis and he said that in Eisenhower’s 1950s America you just didn’t see anything like Ernie Kovacs,” recalled Mills. “You see Ernie’s influence on that show.” After Kovacs’ death, Edie Adams married photographer Martin Mills, Josh Mills’ father, so the younger Mills never knew Kovacs personally. But Jolene Brand did. “Ernie influenced many entertainers including my husband (George Schlatter) when he produced Laugh-In,” explained Brand. “When I worked on Ernie’s show he began writing little scripts just for me which were really nice moments.”

30   August 2019

In one memorable 1961 skit introduced by the cigar smoking Kovacs, Brand played a weather girl seductively reading the forecast. “Yeah, that one was famous,” she said, laughing. “I watched it a while back on YouTube and wondered how it got by the censors!” She said Kovacs worked himself and the crew hard, beginning at 6 am on Sundays and working through the next day until 1 am. “It was just cheaper to keep us going into overtime rather than coming back another day for a new set up,” she said. “And Ernie would do everything – setting up the camera shots and working out technical problems. But he had a joy about his work and his creativity. He was a delightful and really sweet man to work with.” seniortimesmagazine.com

In addition to the exhibit, which contains Kovacs memorabilia provided by Mills who is the executive for the Kovacs estate, a new CD – “The Ernie Kovacs Album: Centennial Edition” – was released in July for the centennial (see www.erniekovacs. com). “It’s basically some of Ernie’s bestknown bits with six bonus tracks never before released digitally,” said Mills. “His work still Ernie Kovacs and Jolene Brand on the resonates 60 years set. All photos provided by Josh Mills (in later because it’s charge of the Kovacs estate) in association with the National Comedy Center in NY. not topical,” added LaPlaca. “It’s experimental and still innovative. The National Comedy Center’s museum environment is an excellent way to highlight his contributions to the history of comedy.” s Nick Thomas teaches at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., and has written features, columns, and interviews for over 700 magazines and newspapers.

We feel the best way to find and recognize local charities in our communities is by asking you! The SunState Community Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities in and around North Central Florida by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. The Foundation was established to promote and provide charitable assistance that contributes towards the development, education and well-being of the communities, areas and residents of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy Counties in Florida. The foundation’s initial goal is to administer and fully fund the award winning Facebook Charity-ofthe-Month program. SunState Federal Credit Union started the program in 2013, but has turned over administration of the program to the foundation, with SunState Federal Credit Union acting only as a sponsor. This has been done in the belief that this path will ensure the program remains a strong and expanding community resource long into the future. The SunState Community Foundation, Inc., provides donors/members opportunities to participate in the furtherance of the foundation’s goals in multiple ways. First, and foremost, the donors/members are providing funds to support the foundation’s charitable initiatives. Donors/members can also nominate groups for the Charity of the Month program, and then vote for the group of their choice. Donors/members are encouraged to participate and vote in the Charity of the Month program. Ultimately, the voters choose where foundation donations go as part of the infrastructure of the program.

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

One Giant Leap:

The Impossible Mission That Flew us to the Moon BY CHARLES FISHMAN c.2019, Simon & Schuster $29.99 / $39.99 Canada, 465 pages

S

tar light, star bright.   The first thing you see tonight is neither star nor planet. It’s technically a satellite, an orbiting astronomical sphere that seems to have a man’s face etched in its side. Once, though, it really did hold a man and in “One Giant Leap” by Charles Fishman, you’ll read about what went into the first moonwalk more than fifty years ago.

42   August 2019

President John F. Kennedy was adamant. Though he admitted to aides that he really didn’t care about space, he’d promised the American people that the U.S. would put a man on the moon before the decade was over. It rankled Kennedy that an American wasn’t first in space; that honor that went to Russian Yuri Gagarin in April 1961, and Kennedy wanted better. Some five weeks later, he made his pitch to the country, even though he knew it would be an uphill struggle: most Americans at that time didn’t see the need for space travel, and didn’t want to commit the money. Nonetheless, NASA, which was still relatively new then, leaped into action. Gagarin had circled the planet, nobody really knew how to take the next step. Though World War II had left the U.S. with exceptional technology and knowledge to take us into the future, much of what was needed for space travel had yet to be invented. The Russians seemed to have a better space program in place but Kennedy pressed on. And then he was assassinated. Despite that JFK wasn’t interested in space itself, Lyndon Johnson certainly was and he “reaffirmed his determination to get the nation to the Moon by 1970.” When Richard Nixon was elected in 1968, he, too, was supportive of space travel. So were companies such as Playtex, General Motors, and IBM. So were hundreds of thousands of Americans who worked on behalf of the Apollo projects. “Just five people watched Frank and Orville Wright make the first airplane flight,” says author Charles Fishman. But

with five months to spare on Kennedy’s promise, “600 million people watched” on worldwide TV as two men plant a flag on the moon… That’s the short story. There’s more to it inside “One Giant Leap,” but be warned: if you’re not very techy, parts of it may boggle your mind. Really, though, there’s no other way that author Charles Fishman could have told this tale. Without a thorough accounting of the technology involved in winning the space race, the story is quite incomplete and it’s difficult to see the full picture of the work it took and the knowledge gained in the years

between averral and Apollo. It helps that Fishman also puts this event into perspective by explaining what the world didn’t have and how strides in understanding and invention changed everything, as a whole. But again, the tech: if it’s not your thing, work through it anyhow, for a story you need to know, as an American citizen. If you’re a STEM kind of person, though, you’ll find “One Giant Leap” to be five stars. s Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives with her two dogs and 11,000 books. seniortimesmagazine.com
