Born in Texas on Christmas Day as Mary Elizabeth Spacek, Sissy Spacek is an award-winning film actress. Called “Sissy” after a nickname her brothers gave her when she was growing up, she started her career after high school and pursued singing in New York before switching her focus to acting. Her breakthrough film role was in the 1972 film “Badlands,” and soon after she married the director, Jack Fisk. Spacek eventually was Oscarnominated for her role in “Carrie” in 1976 and won Best Actress for “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in 1980. The actress has continued to perform in film and television, is a mother of two children and is still married to Fisk.

Blue Santa In the early 2000s, a team in Akron, Ohio, found a figurine wearing a blue hooded coat that they determined was a depiction of the original Santa Claus. The archeologists came to the conclusion that the blue Santa was most likely manufactured in the 1890s, making it the first known American Santa figurine. According to NPR, German immigrants brought Santa Claus figurines to Ohio in the 1800s and then they were made locally. The blue color paid homage to the German version of St. Nicholas.

Losing a Legend Local Writer Ellis Amburn was Gainesville’s Gateway to the Stars

lizabeth Taylor. Jack Nicholson. Janis Jopin. Jack Kerouac. Priscilla Presley. Sammy Davis, Jr. Shelley Winters. Roy Orbison. Warren Beatty. Buddy Holly. Ellis Amburn brought these stars’ stories to life as a writer or editor during a 25-year career in the book publishing industry and later as a celebrity biographer. Amburn put pen to paper for the last time while completing his new biography of Olivia de Havilland. He died Aug. 18 at age 85, just two weeks before Lyons Press ofﬁcially released “Olivia de Havilland and the Golden Age of Hollywood.” Amburn also wrote for Senior Times, where he shared both sweet and deliciously naughty stories about his interactions with Hollywood celebrities in his column, “Enjoying Act Three.” Amburn was born on Aug. 2, 1933 in Jermyn, Texas, population 75. Writing was always in his blood. At Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth, Amburn edited the school paper, “The Parakeet.” At Texas Christian University, his alma mater, Amburn edited “The Skiff,” the university’s newspaper. In his senior year he won a national contest sponsored by Newsweek. After graduating in 1954, Amburn worked for Newsweek as a movies, music, dance, life and leisure reporter. After serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey, Amburn spent 25 years at several top publishing houses, including G. P. Putnam’s Sons; Coward-McCann, where he was vice president; Delacorte Press, where he served as editor-in-chief; and William Morrow and Company. He returned to G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 1980 as editorial director, according to his obituary. Amburn edited and collaborated on celebrities’ memoirs,

including Priscilla Presley’s #1 national best seller “Elvis and Me.” He also served as a ghostwriter for Zsa Zsa Gabor, Shelley Winters and Peggy Lee. Amburn left publishing in 1986 to pursue his dream of becoming a published author. His ﬁrst solo book in 1990 was on a fellow Texan, “Dark Star: The Roy Orbison Story.” Other biographies soon followed, including “Buddy Holly: A Biography” (1995); “Subterranean Kerouac: The Hidden Life of Jack Kerouac” (1998); “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World: The Obsessions, Passions, and Courage of Elizabeth Taylor” (2000); “The Sexiest Man Alive: A Biography of Warren Beatty” (2002); and “Pearl: The Obsessions and Passions of Janis Joplin” (2005). After a long stint in Key West, Amburn moved to High Springs and then Gainesville, where he lived collectively for about 15 years. Amburn was inducted into the Texas Christian University Journalism Hall of Excellence in 2007. He never stopped writing. The de Havilland book is Amburn’s ninth biography. When Amburn turned 85 last summer, he posted a joyful message for over 1,000 Facebook friends. “Hello, 85. Feels as good as it did when I was just beginning my journey on the road to happy destiny as a second grader in Megargel, Texas, Elementary School, which I visited recently. It’s still standing, and so am I.” Tragically, Amburn is no longer standing, but the subject of his ﬁnal biography is. Olivia de Havilland turned 102 last summer. In 2017, Queen Elizabeth II gave de Havilland the title of dame for her contributions to drama. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice: in 1946 for “To Each His Own” and in 1949 for “The Heiress.” seniortimesmagazine.com

Amburn’s biography of de Havilland stems from his meeting with the iconic actress when he was assigned to handle her projected memoir at the Delacorte Press in 1973. The book is as much a history of Hollywood’s heyday as it is a recounting of de Havilland’s career and personal life. Amburn’s personal knowledge of key players in de Havilland’s life and career makes for lively storytelling. He adds anecdotes from Jimmy Stewart, David O. Selznick, George Cukor and Joan Fontaine, de Havilland’s estranged sister, who died in 2013. Amburn was an editor at William Morrow when the company published Fontaine’s autobiography. Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, Mickey Rooney, Burgess Meredith, Howard Hughes, Clark Gable,

he adorable Margaret O’Brien began her bigscreen career at the age of three with a one-minute spot in 1941’s “Babes on Broadway.” Her career took off the following year as the star of MGM’s “Journey for Margaret.” Throughout the 1940s, she continued to endear herself to millions seeking Hollywood diversions as World War II came and went. Ms. O’Brien, now 81, is back this holiday season starring in “This is Our Christmas,” a sequel to the popular 2015 TV movie“BeverlyHillsChristmas,” and follows the Foxworth family seven years after the original picture. Produced by Five Arts Films (see www. fiveartsfilms.com), the film had its broadcast premiere on the UPtv network in early “This is Our Christmas” was released on DVD in November. I took my work very seriously.” O’Brien said she can still recall her ﬁrst brief role in “Babes” starring Mickey Rooney. “Mickey and I didn’t have any scenes together, but I can still remember him walking by and saying ‘Hello, what a cute little girl!’ I sort of have a photographic memory and can remember all my movies just like I was back there now,” she said. An avid reader as a child, little Margaret was thrilled to tackle many roles based on the books she grew up reading such as “Little Women,” “Jane Eyre,” and “The Secret Garden.” “How many children get to play a character from their favorite books?” she asked. “I knew them so well, it was just fabulous to create them on the screen.” And unlike many child actors who strayed into the darker side of Hollywood and fame, O’Brien never did. “My seniortimesmagazine.com

mother raised me to be pretty well-grounded,” she said. “So I never had the problems that a lot of child actors faced.” O’Brien said she never watched her own ﬁlms, so will she tune in to view her new Christmas movie? “Actually, I’m a little better about watching them now, but as a child I never did. So I might watch this one to get in the Christmas mood,” she said. “I watch a lot of Christmas movies as the season approaches and when scripts come up with a Christmas theme, I love to do them because they’re just so much fun. CHRISTMAS: A GLOBAL PHENOMENON With both religious and commercial aspects, Christmas has been celebrated worldwide for the past two millennia. Traditionally, Christians use December 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. However, the holiday is also a cultural phenomenon in the secular world, celebrated with traditions such as decorating trees, giving gifts and sharing meals. The story goes that an angel of the Lord came to a virgin named Mary to tell her that she would give birth to the Son of God. Mary traveled to Bethlehem with her husband Joseph, where she delivered Jesus in a humble stable. In early years of Christianity, people didn’t celebrate Christmas in December at all — since the date of Jesus’ birth didn’t show up in the Bible, no one could agree on a speciﬁc time. Finally, in the third century, December 25 became the ofﬁcial day. This overlapped with existing pagan celebrations. By the 8th century, Christmas was celebrated across Europe with wild parties similar to those held during Mardi Gras. Some Christian groups, such as the Puritan settlers, opposed these Christmas festivities. In fact, an Act of Parliament banned Christmas celebrations from 1644 to 1660. Today, decorating Christmas trees is a tradition for many families who observe the holiday. Prince Albert of Germany is to thank for that — he brought his family custom of decorating evergreen trees to England after wedding Queen Victoria in the 1800s. When a photograph of the royal family standing next to a 40-foot tall tree ran in an American newspaper in 1848, the tradition caught on in the United States.

The practice of sending Christmas cards also started in England around this time. The act of gift-giving, however, has been around for a while, reminding people of the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that three wise men brought to baby Jesus. However, the rise of advertising and the industrial age made Christmas the commercial holiday it is today. The man who is said to bring these gifts, Santa Claus, is based on a Dutch saint named Nicholas. Santa Claus used to be represented as a jolly man who wore many different colors, but after appearing in a Coca Cola advertisement in the 1930s in red and white, the color combination stuck.

HANUKKAH: THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS During the eight days of Hanukkah, Jewish families come together at night to light candles on a branched candelabra called a menorah. They start with one ﬂame on the ﬁrst day and light an additional candle with each day that passes. The light from the menorah is used to represent God’s gift of light to the world. The word Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew. Usually occurring sometime in November or December, Hanukkah starts on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in second century B.C. In the Maccabean Revolt, Jewish people revolted against the Greek-Syrian rule that oppressed them. the rule of Antiochus III of Syria. When his son Antiochus IV rose to the throne, he forced the Jewish people to worship Greek gods and outlawed Jewish rituals under the threat of death. In 163 B.C., Antiochus IV seized the Jews’ holy Second Temple and turned it into a place to worship Zeus. The Jewish high priest Mattathias staged a revolt with his five sons that raged for three years. Judah Maccabee, one of the sons, led the Jewish people to victory in 165 B.C. Maccabee and the others were keen to rededicate the temple to Judaism. They planned to light the eternal flame on the ceremonial menorah. However, there was only enough oil left to last for one night. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days. When families light the candles of the menorah today, the flames act as a symbol for the unconquerable faith of the Jewish people. Jewish families also prepare traditional foods around this time, such as potato pancakes called latkes or jam doughnuts called sufganiyot. Additionally, Jewish children play a game with a top called a dreidel (the Hebrew word for “spinner”). Each of the four sides of the dreidel has a different Hebrew letter that represents a word in the saying Nes gadol haya sham (which means “A great miracle occurred there.”) Participants of the dreidel game spin the top, often playing to win chocolate coins called gelt. Customarily, families did not give gifts during Hanukkah. However, because the holiday often falls in close proximity to Christmas, Jews sometimes partake in gift giving during part or all of the eight nights. KWANZAA: A TIME FOR UNITY Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration honoring African-American heritage. The festivities take place between Christmas and New Year’s Day, from December 26 to January 1. Kwanzaa was founded by an activist and professor named Maulana Karenga in 1966. With the emphasis in black pride that accompanied the Civil Rights movement, Karenga’s goal was to create a holiday to commemorate the bonds that African Americans had with their forefathers in Africa. The seven-day social holiday was introduced as a way to emphasize black culture and unity. Today, an estimated 2 million Americans celebrate Kwanzaa each year. The word Kwanzaa comes from a Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which translates to “First fruits.” An important part of Kwanzaa is a candleholder, called a kinara, which holds seven candles. The middle candle is black, representing unity, and is lit on the ﬁrst day of Kwanzaa. Three

of the remaining candles are red; the last three are green. The kikombe cha umoja, or unity cup, is traditionally passed around among family members and guests. Sharing sips from the cup during the Karamu feast on the sixth day of Kwanzaa promotes unity. The oldest person at the celebration pours out the unity cup to honor the ancestors. The kinara is placed next to the unity cup on a decorative mat called a mkeka. Families traditionally spend Kwanzaa celebrations lighting the kinara, sharing communal meals, drumming, reading poetry and dancing. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles. The principles are as follows: umoja (unity), ujichagulia (self-determination), ujima (collective work and responsibility), ujamaa (cooperative economics), nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity) and imani (faith). Helping Homeless Veterans A Local Veteran Brings Awareness to a National Issue by Steph Strickland

ver 40,000 American veterans across the country go to bed each night without a place to call home, according to the National Alliance to End Home-

lessness. Nash Cooper, a Navy Veteran, Coastal Crooner and Fremont Philanthropies Area Coordinator, often hears stories of those in the community affected by this issue through his work — from those who still suffer from homelessness to those who have passed on. In September of 2017, Cooper decided to dedicate his time to helping local, homeless veterans. After losing his home in hurricane Irma, he found himself moving to the North Florida area and getting involved with a cause that he believes impacts far too many American lives. “I believe if you have one homeless veteran, you have one homeless veteran too many,” he said. Cooper became immersed in the cause and realized that veterans face countless roadblocks when it comes to obtaining housing, which has augmented this national issue. Moreover, Cooper said that half of the veterans inflicted by homelessness are over the age of 50, and many of them have suffered from PTSD, mental illness and/or substance abuse. “It hurts, it really hurts,” he said. “And I’m doing everything I can to help.” In November, Cooper found success in his efforts as the City of Gainesville officially designated the first Friday in November as Homeless Veterans Day. In honor of this recognition, Cooper hosted the Autumn Vocals Salute Veterans of America event on November 2 in downtown Gainesville, which featured live music from local talent, including Joshua

Pearsaul, Aaron Mares, Kyle Cortes, Manuel Roldes and David Havens. Musical performances included covers of well-known artists such as Lena Horne and Frank Sinatra. Dreya Wondervault was also asked to perform as a special guest vocalist. Wondervault is currently a senior at the University of Florida where she is studying music with a focus on vocal performance. Having only met Cooper within a week of the performance, she knew the cause was worth being a part of. “I think a lot of people aren’t really aware of the trouble [veterans] face… and I would deﬁnitely see myself performing for Nash in the future,” she said. The event also recognized organizations and individuals who have helped this cause through the Friends of the Veterans Awards, which recognized those who have helped Cooper

Cooper said he is immensely grateful to the city for this designation and he hopes to spread this recognition to cities such as Tampa and Tallahassee, and possibly nationally by 2020. He said that identifying and spreading awareness about this issue is a vital ﬁrst step he has made throughout the last year. Radio shows, attending chamber meetings and continuing to spread awareness in additional ways are crucial parts of Cooper’s ideas. However, he would also like to see greater research and accountability being put into this issue, so people can understand the depth of it and to ensure veterans who truly need aid are receiving it. More ideas for the future continue to swirl around in Cooper’s mind, including the creation of an ID card which qualifies those in need and connects them with Veterans Affairs or homelessness organizations. Cooper coined his plan the “Civic Challenge: Vets Vision 2020,” in which he hopes to enlist the help of more local government officials and businesses to serve the needs of local heroes. Project VEEO, Veterans Economic Empowerment Opportunities, is another program Cooper is involved with. This program is looking to invest in a motor home that would

provide veterans with a safe and quiet place to share their needs in conﬁdence and comfort. Cooper hopes to spread awareness across the region, state and country, and to soon obtain a mechanism to aid him in this endeavor. Gainesville has provided a strong support system to getting this project off of the ground, from the city ofﬁcials who have worked with Cooper to recognize the issue surrounding homeless veterans to the First United Methodist Church that has helped support his service. However, Cooper is hoping to continue growing the cause by getting more students involved. “I would really like to engage the collegiate communities,” he said. “We have a strong base with Santa Fe, and we want to get involved more with the other school around here that everyone talks about.” Fremont Philanthropies has provided Cooper with a medium through which to obtain these goals, and he said that seniortimesmagazine.com

he is grateful to be a part of this organization and serve as a board member on its Area Leadership Exchange Quorum, as well as the Area Coordinator. The organization as a whole is focused on civic knowledge, rights and responsibilities of citizens. The organization is founded in honor of John C. Fremont, an explorer, veteran and one of the ﬁrst emancipators in American history. “Fremont fought for social justice before it was even called that,” Cooper said. All of the groups and individuals that Cooper works with help to inspire him to continue his efforts by sharing stories of their own connection to homeless veterans, or volunteering and donating to the cause. Cooper feels this cause is now his life’s mission, “I feel like it’s what God wants me to do,” he said. Cooper’s experience with veteran’s

affairs dates long before his involvement with Fremont Philanthropies and his own service in the United States Navy. Coming from a family of servicemembers beginning with his grandfather in WWI (and later discovering even earlier ties to the American Revolution), he has witnessed the treatment of American servicemembers both during and after their tenure in the military. Despite the “raw deal” that many veterans are given, Cooper stressed his love for the country and his honor in serving it. Cooper encourages all individuals of any background, gender, race or sexual orientation to consider a life with the United States Military or the Peace Corps, so they too can make a difference. “If you want to ﬁght for the soul of this country,” he said, “stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.” s

Simple Joys

ometimes the simplest things can mean the most. As I look back at my childhood, I realize that my everyday life was quite unpretentious. I lived in a little cottage in the woods until I was nine, and then my parents and I moved into my grandparents’ old farmhouse when my grandpa retired from farming and they moved to town. Every day of the year was full of ordinary pleasures, but big events such as vacations, movies or shopping trips were few and far between. I have to say, however, that my life was full of joy. My pets, my Mom teaching me to bake, my Dad’s quiet smile as he came home from the ﬁelds—I felt safe, loved and very blessed. Holidays were simple too. When the harvest was over and the cold wind began to blow across the prairie, our thoughts began to focus on the two big holidays of the year: Thanksgiving and Christmas! I loved making decorations during art class at school because we always had special projects before these holidays. One year we were told to bring in cornhusks to make a turkey. The cornhusks were dry, of course, because they came directly from the nearby ﬁelds. We arranged them in a half circle to be the turkey’s full tail feathers and glued them to construction paper. After that was done, we used paint to form his head, neck, body and feet, and also painted his feathers (husks). Our

ﬁnished art was used to decorate the classroom, and we weren’t allowed to bring them home until the day before Thanksgiving. It was hard for me to wait, because I was so proud of my creation and wanted to hear my mother’s excited

approval when she saw it. She had a way of making me feel so special with my artwork. The year of the turkey, she even found an old picture frame in the storeroom and immediately framed it. A few years ago, when cleaning out my mother’s attic, I actually found that framed turkey. Hard to believe she saved it for over 50 years. Similar art projects were also made for Christmas. They were probably my favorites. Ornaments for the tree made from clothespins, pipe cleaners and glitter were the most common. Because of my aptitude for art, I was often chosen to paint snowmen on the classroom windows with tempera paint. One year I made silhouette cutouts of Santa in his sleigh with individual reindeer to string across the classroom. These

were also allowed to go home with me the last day of school before Christmas break. My mother loved the silhouette cutouts the best. She taped them to the windows of our home’s porch entrance that year, and a few Christmases after. An annual tradition in our home was to put up a live Christmas tree. I, of course, always selected the biggest, tallest and fattest tree, which barely would fit as my mom and dad drug it up the steps of our back porch into the house. The trunk was usually so thick it was too big for the tree stand, so my dad would have to get an axe to chip away at the trunk of the tree until it fit. It was a process that usually took quite a while, during which I overheard a few choice words that didn’t seem to fit the sentiment of the holiday. Once the tree was up all was forgotten, and it became the beautiful centerpiece for our holiday in a place of honor in the living room.

Next came the trimming of the tree, and it was a family affair. My mother and father arranged the strands of lights, after checking each light bulb to make sure they were working. Our pet cats even got into the act, playing with the tangled light strands or climbing up on the ladder to get a better view. Then I took over and put the ornaments on the tree, a process that usually occupied many days since I was very particular about their placement. Beneath the tree on a velvet cloth was my nativity set. The stable held many farm animals surrounding the Holy Family. I had a special place for each individual in the set, and took great care at their arrangement. Once again, our cats enjoyed this endeavor and thought that they were invited to join the animals in the nativity display. As soon as I ﬁnished the arrangement, one or another of our cats would snuggle down for a nap amongst the sheep and shepherds, knocking everything

awry. Although it was a little annoying, I didn’t mind too much because it was another opportunity to lie under the tree while rearranging things—and enjoy the glow from the lights and tinsel above. As I gazed into the stable, the Christmas story came alive for me and I could imagine myself being there on that very special day. Christmas morning was when we opened our gifts. My mother participated while running in and out of the kitchen where she was making food to take to my grandma for our noontime meal. I always wished that she could sit awhile and join my dad and me as we opened presents, but she had to keep an eye on the stove so nothing burned. It never entered our minds to open gifts on Christmas Eve. Our tradition was to open them in the morning, after Santa had visited during the night. After the gifts were opened, we got dressed and ready to go to my grandparents’ house. I was allowed to bring a favorite toy from Santa, and my cousins and I would play with our new treasures all afternoon. Grandma would have small gifts for us too, and I remember one year in particular that I received a storybook. She knew I loved to read, and the book was a collection of bedtime stories. To this day, I can remember how thrilled I was with that gift. These are the simple pleasures I remember as I look back at my childhood. I wonder if we slowed down a little and made an effort to go back to that quiet, gentle life—wouldn’t we all be better off? Sometimes the rush and hustle of the holidays becomes too much, and we lose sight of the important things: faith, family and the traditions that mean so much to us. Here’s wishing you all the very Merriest of Christmases—or whatever holiday your family observes. May your memories be bright and your hearts be full. And may your holidays be blessed with simple joys. s

Healthy Edge How to Win Your 2019 New Year’s Resolution

ot the best at keeping New Year’s Resolutions? This year try out these proven tips to boost your chances. With the New Year comes a feeling that we have a clean slate—we’re free to make big lifestyle improvements. We can be our best selves… moving forward. Yet, only one in five of us succeed in keeping our resolution for up to two years. Whomp whomp. According to a University of Scranton study, resolutions become a faded memory after three months of “trying” for four out of five of us. But, there’s a bright side: the same study found that those who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to make a positive change after six months compared to people who want to change but do not make New Year’s resolutions. So, why do some of us fail where others succeed? Interestingly, age, gender, and the type of resolution we make have no effect. So, it seems that we don’t have an inherent head-start over our kids or the opposite sex when it comes to resolution-keeping. The scientific secret sauce for keeping New Year’s promises are: • Self-efficacy • A plan • Rewards • Temptation avoidance • Perseverance Build your self-efficacy.

Self-efficacy is a psychology term that refers to how much you believe in your abilities to achieve goals. He makes one improvement each day, such as listening to audio books or doing small things to improve his efficiency. “I figured that if you improve by 1% everyday, you will improve by 365% over a year,” Schebesta said. 3D Printing takes applied learning to a new level at Einstein School Developing 3D props for living biographies and plays. Creating 3D manipulatives to understand geometry, fractions and improve multiplication skills. These are just a few examples of how students at The Einstein School are using cutting-edge technology to take learning to a whole new dimension using a 3D printer, made possible through a donation by the SunState Community Foundation, a partner non-profit organization of SunState Federal Credit Union. Founded in 1999, The Einstein School serves Alachua County students with language or speech impairments, dyslexia or other language-based reading difficulties. Founded by Dr. Tim Conway and Zack Osbrach, The Einstein School is a tuition free charter school designed for students in grades 2-8 who struggle academically due to these difficulties. After hearing the school’s mission, Janalyn Peppel saw an opportunity that a 3D Printer could make in the classroom now and in the future. Peppel is Program Coordinator for New Technology Made Simple Now, a local non-profit whose goal is to introduce 3D Technologies to veterans, seniors, disabled citizens and underserved youth by bringing people together to improve their lives through technology. She approached SunState Federal Credit Union about making a donation and they saw the value of investing in advanced technologies for students at the school. “It is important for kids, even at the elementary

school level, to understand ever-progressing technology,” Peppel said. “Technology engages the visual learner and exposes them to new areas of augmented reality, coding, computer-aided design, and 3D scanning. A 3D printer is just one of the many tools we use to spark imagination that will lead to unlimited potential in a child’s future.” Through small, hour-long demonstrations and printing 3D models, Peppel introduced teachers and students to the 3D printing system. Teachers have been integrating its use into their lesson plans and the impact in the classroom has already been far-reaching. “Students must use critical thinking skills in order to design the virtual item in a way that the printer can successfully create the physical item,” said Christine Aurelio, Principal at The Einstein School. “There are numerous ways 3D printing can enhance core curriculum,” Peppel said. “It takes applied learning to a new level. For example, students can create a physical model of a telescope. They create the model by using 3D design software to arrange basic geometric shapes. The software allows them to view models from different angles to develop skills in understanding ratios and measurements, as well as, visualizing forms. It is a way to tie everything together in practical applications,” she said. “The reality is most students will be using advanced technologies in some form by the time they graduate. Exposing them to it now prepares them for higher paying careers.” Teachers and students at The Einstein School continue to discover the endless possibilities of how the 3D printer can spur creativity and enhance learning. “We are very excited to have students using their imaginations to determine how to incorporate the printer into our curriculum in ways we have not even recognized or considered yet,” Aurelio said. “For instance, our eighth graders printed personalized tokens with words of wisdom for the fifth graders entering middle school this year.” Aurelio said the SunState Foundation’s donation exemplifies a community partnership that impacts education. “This partnership gives our teachers the ability to develop Einstein students’ job-related skills, providing them with exposure to unique opportunities for creative problem-solving,” Aurelio said. “Since all of our students face academic challenges, especially in reading and language, it is exciting to expose them to the realm of 21st century skills and give them tools to be successful contributors to society. The access to an emerging technology, such as 3D printing, is immeasurable and we are extremely grateful to SunState Federal Credit Union and the SunState Foundation.” As a locally-based community credit union, SunState Federal Credit Union and its charitable foundation have always been dedicated to funding projects that make a difference right here in North Central Florida. Embracing Life Celebrate Christmas with Cupcakes

ecember is the month for celebrating many multicultural holidays, including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Three Kings Day. Did you know that in the midst of those celebrations is National Cupcake Day? Do not feel bad if you were unaware. I did not know either until I was considering Christmas gifts for my nine-year-old granddaughter, Lexi. Lexi loves to cook, craft and decorate cupcakes. She enjoys and judges “Cupcake Wars” on the Food Network. Her current passion is to study “Do It Yourself” (DIY) videos. My opinion might be jaded, but she is talented well beyond her years. Lexi would like her ﬁrst business to be an online Slime store, complete with combo packages. Sorry, I digressed. As her proud Grammy, I just could not resist. Anyway, while scanning for inspirational ideas, I found a YouTube tutorial on edible gelatin bubbles. Their primary use is for Christmas scene snow globe toppers for cupcakes. They are undoubtedly a tedious time-consuming project; made by crafty cooking connoisseurs. As I pondered the possibilities of presents to excite my artistic granddaughter, cupcakes captured my attention. Perhaps I could create a “Celebrate Cupcakes for Christmas” package, including its history and information on the national holiday. The concept was deﬁnitely worthy of further exploration. So, I began sifting through the surprisingly small tidbits of data, docu-

menting their origin. Most likely the first “cupcake-like” dessert was baked in Britain. The British called them English Fairy Cakes and they truly savored their sweet treat. Many historians believe that the expression, “cup cake,” derived from a formula for a standard cake. Quantities of ingredients were measured in cups, making it easy to remember and to pass down secret recipes. Another element to consider is that most cooks in that era were illiterate. Recipes that did require written documentation were essential, such as the 1-2-3-4 cake. This cup cake calls for one cup butter, two cups sugar, three cups flour and four eggs. In 1796 Amelia Simmons authored the cookbook “American Cookery.” Apparently, the petite delight was not named. Simmons simply labeled it as a, “light cake to bake in small cups.” It was not until 1828 that the first mention of “cupcake” was made. Eliza Leslie referenced that term in her book, “Seventy-Five Receipts for Pasty, Cakes and Sweetmeats.” (Note: The title is correct. In those days, receipt meant recipe. The word, recipe, was first used to describe medicine.) Cupcakes slowly began to evolve, perhaps for economic purposes. Possibly

to prevent waste, the leftover batter was poured into small clay pots. Or, when fuel was limited, baking several small portions accelerated the process. Maybe utilizing the empty spaces in the oven with small vessels (while cooking something else) was the optimal use of resources. One fascinating fun fact I found peaked my enthusiasm. Baking cupcakes in tea cups was once a standard practice. What a discovery! Tea cups are the decoration. Little additional time is required to adorn the cupcakes. This is a unique creative way to serve dessert on a buffet or at a formal dinner! My excitement grew as a I mentally created cupcake gift baskets. Finding cute, elegant or nostalgic tea cups could be an adventure. Reusable modern molds speciﬁcally designed for baking tea cup cupcakes are also available. Candy canes, cookbooks, confectioners’ sugar and confetti comestible are options to include. Allow your imagination to run wild while assembling baskets for your loved-ones. (Warning – do not purchase tea cups with lead-based glazes.) As I embraced this idea for Lexi, I began to understand how baking and writing can equally evoke excitement. Author Emma Shortt described that correlation perfectly in her quote, “Writing is like baking cupcakes, you’re trying to make something from the raw. Like with cupcakes it’s ﬂour and eggs and stuff, and with books it’s ideas and words. great big bear. That’s what you’ve sounded like all week: a growl here, a snort there, grump, grump, snarl. Everything that could go wrong did – spectacularly. But what went right? Hmm. Grab a mug, take a seat, and turn your frown around with “Thanks a Thousand” by A.J. Jacobs. Ever have one of those days where everything goes off-kilter?

Yep, A.J. Jacobs has them, just like the rest of us. And like most of us, he’s “ridiculously lucky” overall, something he recognizes even when “daily irritations hijack my brain.” Sadly, that happens about half the time he’s awake. He tries to be cognizant of his grumpiness; in fact, while making a point about gratitude to one of his sons, Jacobs began to think. Maybe we treat gratitude too superﬁcially. He decided to take thankfulness to the next level by thanking every person who had a role in bringing him his daily cup of coffee. He started easy, with the coffeehouse barista whose bubbly personality reminded him to “afﬁrm and recognize” everyone who serves him. Then he visited the coffeehouse’s coffee buyer, who taught Jacobs to slow down because “it’s hard to be grateful if we’re speeding.” He thanked the designer of the cup lid, the designer of a coffeehouse logo, and the people who developed the cup sleeve. At this point, with no end in sight – how far back, how deep should he go here? – Jacobs switched his goal. Rather than making his project “a lifetime job,” he’d thank a thousand people for his coffee. That included roasters, who ready the beans for sale. It included a trip to the Catskills, to thank those who bring water to New York City homes. Jacobs thanked the people who make coffee safe to drink, the folks who warehouse

the beans, truckers who transport it, pallet-makers, scientists, and the Colombian farmers who own coffee-bean trees passed down for generations, and who invited Jacobs to visit them again. “I won’t take them up on the invitation,” he says, “but I’m grateful to have it.” One thing goes wrong in the course of your day, and it’s like falling into the mud on the banks of a rapid river: whoosh, and everything goes downstream. “Thanks a Thousand” reminds you that there are a million reasons not to let it go. But don’t think this is a self-help book filled with sunny platitudes; quite the contrary, author A.J. Jacobs actually dissects gratitude with the help of science and research. Yes, as it turns out, being thankful is good for us and offers benefits that you may not realize. Add to that an appealingly puppyish sense of purpose in finding people to thank, and you’ve got a book that educates, informs, and charms the socks off you.
