This project is a collective book of various illustrations, drawings, and digital art I have created for a CalArts Imagmaking course offered through coursera.org. This project seeks to express the contemplative, quirky, and almost foreboding mood created by this expressive and intelligent animal. During the book making process I was surprised by the use of color and decided I would make the color a part of the 'surprise' and cover and back. Ravens and other solid color animals can be difficult to illustrate. I found purple was my preferred color to bring into the mix but I only used it on three images. The third image didn't fit until I found I could create a relationship between color and the black and white of the rest of the project. The contrast between the scale and the directionality of the birds really helped to allow me to have the birds move and point to various areas of the compositions. I enjoyed having the birds look or position on the text as well as point at one another. Created by Liz Hejny.
