Holidays on Main Street

For many, this iconic Massachusetts hotel embodies the spirit of the holiday season.

TEXT EMILIE-NOELLE PROVOST

The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, has been a respite for travelers since 1773. But it wasn’t until 1967, when Stockbridge resident Norman Rockwell painted “Home for Christmas” (Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas) for McCall’s magazine, that the inn’s image became synonymous with the holidays. Rockwell’s famous painting of the town’s Main Street decked out in holiday fi nery is what many people picture when they think of an old-fashioned American Christmas.

Today, the holidays are the Red Lion’s most popular season. Guests from around the world book reservations up to a year in advance for a chance to sit by the roaring fi re in the lobby, sip mulled wine on the hotel’s covered front porch, and soak up the grandeur of the more than 30 holiday trees decorated throughout the property.
