Modern history of Boebert and her GOP rivals is no laughing matter
A
DAVE PERRY Editor
very long time ago, I was treated to a college history prof who was actually able to enthrall bored teenagers with tales we would never forget. Most of us came to college with our heads stuffed with the dates and exposition of heroes pitted against villains during the eons that humans have been keeping track of such things. But what Professor Carla Joy explained is that history is also crammed with endless episodes of stupid people doing stupid things or just episodes of aimless stupidity. I marveled when I found out that brutal fascist Benito Mussolini was a clandestine and crappy romance writer. In between slaughtering and terrorizing his own people, he published “The Cardinal’s Mistress.” It was a torrid and horrid waste of pulp that pitted the Church against a randy priest because of his insatiable burning loins of heaving desire for a woman. It was difficult to tell it from parody. Which brings us to 2024, and to Congressperson Lauren Boebert, R-Who Knows, Who Cares. It’s been hard to miss, but if your coma just lifted, Boebert came to Aurora a few years ago and told visiting Texas Dem star Beto O’Rourke to take her gun over her flat-lined body. Then she went home to Rifle and got elected as a Republican to Congress. Boebert told everybody how stupid they are and how much she loves guns, Donald Trump and ammo, but especially guns and Donald Trump. She yelled at President Joe Biden and barely got re-elected in 2022 in her solid GOP district running against a Democrat from Aspen. After that, she yelled a lot more and got caught last year on camera at a Broadway production of Beetlejuice in Denver vaping in the theater and rubbing her date’s crotch while he rubbed her breasts. She got into a few public rows with her recently divorced husband, and when it became apparent she was totally unelectable, she moved to Weld County, She’s running for that congressional district seat with nine other Republicans, seeking the GOP nomination. So all this modern, local history involving a congressperson who thinks climate change is fake and funny, that Trump was the best president ever, and still is because he beat Biden in 2020, came to a pinnacle last week as the herd of Republicans gathered for the first time in public to vie for votes from folks who mostly still lament that Trump isn’t in the White House instead of headed to the big house. Among these Republicans is former state lawmaker Jerry Sonnenberg, a farmer, rancher and infamous secessionist. He’s been howling over making northeast Colorado the 51st state when he isn’t accusing Gov. Jared Polis of something and everything. During the pandemic, when we, the media, literally, had near-daily press conferences with Polis and a roomfull of health and safety officials answering our every question, Sonnenberg said Polis was hiding stuff. He wrote this to the Sentinel in 2020. “The lack of transparency regarding this pandemic is appalling,” he wrote in an opinion column. “We see only what the governor and his team choose to share — but that is what happens when a dictator is unchallenged and the press becomes his mouthpiece.” Evidence and data have never concerned Sonnenberg much. Tough talk does. It’s much the same with GOP State Rep. Mike Lynch, who was the House minority leader until a couple of weeks ago. He lost that job last week after the Denver Post revealed that Lynch had gotten a DUI in 2022 near Fort Collins, driving 95 mph on I-25. He made the cop who pulled him over pretty nervous when Lynch admitted that he had a handgun in his pocket and a knife in the other. Makes you wonder what kind of social life far-right extremists have out there on the plains. Lynch was caught on cop-cam asking about keeping this all away from the media. He sat on the convictions, until he got outed, first about his past, and then from his leadership role. He wasn’t alone among the GOP hopefuls for Ken Buck’s soon-to-empty 4th Congressional seat who not only profess their love of lawmen, but have had run-ins with them. Six of the nine Republicans running for Buck’s congres-

sional seat admitted they, too, had been arrested or charged with crimes. Republican voters in the audience gave the admissions a rousing round of applause. Lynch wasn’t finished with Boebert yet, however. Her sudden move from the Western Slope all the way to eastern Colorado for a fresh start from a bad marriage and to save a GOP congressional seat here, because she had incinerated one in Rifle, has supercharged her competitors. “Could you give the definition of ‘carpetbagger?’” Lynch queried Boebert as the Republicans in the Ft. Lupton crowd gave up some “ooooohs” an “arrrrgs.” Boebert’s modus operandi is based on the false belief that if one talks loudly, everything sounds sensible and profound. Boebert, and much of what’s left of the Republican Party in Congress, are daily proof of that misnomer. After a few hard blinks and some jaw movements I’ve seen previously in TMJ patients before, she stared at particularly nothing and terse-smiled her response while jilting her neck. “Is this a Mary Poppins question?” At this point, I’d like to give Boebert credit for knowing not only who Marry Poppins even is, but that in one scene of the 1960s classic, Poppins “magically” pulls large items from her travel bag — made out of carpet. Carpet bag. Mary Poppins. Get it? What she didn’t address is where the word “carpetbagger” really does come from. The term was coined by southerners after the Civil War. It was a derogatory word for northerners, often carrying cheap luggage made of cloth and carpeting, who descended on the region during The Reparation as conniving and often opaque opportunists. I can imagine they told weird chummy stories in an effort to build confidence, and in reality torching it. Like the time last year during congressional hearing testimony about drug prices Boebert lobbed this gem. “I left a prescription at a pharmacy once. I went to get birth control … The price was very, very high ... And I said, ‘It’s cheaper to have a kid.’ And I left it there, and now I have my third son.” As it turns out, Boebert straw-polled in the middle among those who attended the gathering. She and others leave behind some history for a future ignorant teen to scoff over as some future college prof delights the class with stuff they’ll have a hard time believing actually happened, right here in Colorado. Colorado abortion rights are critical but not inalienable
E
ndless millions in the United States and across the globe have watched in horror as the Taliban has returned to power in Afghanistan to crush the rights of women. American women can now sympathize with those women cruelly reduced to second-class citizens, unable to keep the government and those claiming religious superiority out of their lives and their bodies. Tragically, the radical 2022 Supreme Court Dobbs decision ended the decades-old Roe-vs-Wade Constitutional protection of women’s right to medical privacy and equality. What’s happened since has been an ensuing chaos widely predicted as states ruled by far-right conservative legislatures began invoking women’s healthcare restrictions with all the zeal and consideration of the Taliban. Texas, Florida, Idaho and a growing number of Southern states now force women to bear children or risk their lives because of failed pregnancies. The punitive laws have prompted stories and scenarios appalling not just to American women, but to modern, free societies across the globe. Despite the imposing extremist rules made possible by the Dobbs decision, the nation has seen a marked increase in the growing majority of Americans who consider themselves pro-choice, currently 55% — up 7 points in two years. The number of Americans who consider themselves pro-life has dropped dramatically, from 47% to 39% during that same time, according to Gallup and Pew polling results from last year. In states like Texas, women now face critical illness and death suffering from ectopic pregnancies, unable to receive proper medical care. Women brave ostracization and physical peril by going public with the cruel and senseless laws, rulings and problems created by brutal state laws. While Colorado has for generations been a stronghold of women’s rights, health care rights and abortion rights, the effects of myriad laws and restrictions threaten the healthcare access and choices of women here. As more states impose Taliban-like rules on women, they will flee to states like Colorado to live freely, or visit for the sole purpose of getting quality medical treatment for pregnancy and abortion. The healthcare system here, however, is not without limits. More importantly, possible restrictions of abortion drugs, imposed by rogue states and lawmakers, could also cause problems in states like Colorado. And sadly, insured healthcare for women employed by state and local government is already unfairly restricted. Federal or corporate restrictions on insurance companies providing abortion care benefits make access to services an option of privilege, not choice. Colorado cannot hope for cooler and more stable minds and lawmakers to prevail in Congress and across the nation. Colorado residents must protect themselves from outside nefarious groups and individuals, anxious to impose the will of a minority’s theocracy on everyone. An amendment to the Colorado Constitution, currently being promoted among voters, would protect the rights of women here and send a clear signal to women across the nation that there is still hope for them, and that emboldened voters everywhere could ensure that help is on the way.

Trump is beatable, but not by Haley
I
n this week’s New Hampshire Republican primary, the key statistic was not Donald Trump’s underwhelming margin of victory – he beat Nikki Haley by 11 points after crowing that he’d win by 30 – but, far more importantly, this one right here: Independent swing voters, who were free under state rules to participate in that primary, rejected Trump in a landslide. Haley racked up 61 percent. He got 37. Translation: The guy who’s been found liable for rape, the guy with four indictments and 91 felony counts, is strong within the party he has transformed into a cult – indeed, strong enough to steamroll the primary calendar and snatch a third GOP nomination – but he’s woefully weak with the swing independents he needs to pull off a November Restoration. Disgusted as you probably are with the prospect of putting up with this demagogue for yet another campaign year, your reflexive pessimism may tempt you to conclude that New Hampshire’s swing voters are outliers, that they’re not in sync with the nation’s indies. But in truth they seem to be; according to one national poll in December, President Biden is trouncing Trump with independents by a margin of 12 points. Even Fox News’ Brit Hume saw the key New Hampshire stat and clanged the alarm. He said on the air Trump’s showing was “weak” and after defeats in 2020 and 2022, “he has a lot of losses on his book.” 44 percent of everyone who voted in the New Hampshire primary said they’d refuse to cast November ballots for Trump if he’s convicted of a crime prior to the election, according to exit polls. Trump is trying to stall all his trials. No wonder he’s begging our highest court for a crackpot ruling of “total immunity.” MAGA Theater, lest we forget, does not draw its spectators from the America mainstream. If you steeled yourself to watch victorious Trump preen on stage, you were rightly nauseated. He was clearly annoyed by his winning margin and Haley’s refusal to kiss his ring. So, of course, he mocked the attire she wore (“the fancy dress that probably wasn’t so fancy”) and warned that if she’s not careful, she might wind up getting investigated for “stuff she doesn’t want to talk about.” He bellowed that he’d beaten Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire in 2016 and that he’d beaten Biden in New Hampshire in 2020
(he lost the state both times), and, of course, his fans lapped it all up – none more so than his newest simpering supplicant, ex-candidate Tim Scott, last seen on a debate stage declaring his love for “Judeo Christian values” but now burbling “I love you” to Trump. In the words of center-right political commentator Matt Lewis, “The Party of Lincoln has metastasized into a decadent and perverse cult of personality that calls evil good and good evil.” Heck, it’s even possible “that a Jesus-Reagan ’24 ticket still would have fallen short of beating Trump within the current GOP electorate.” The current GOP electorate will likely grease his third nomination. It’s hard to envision where Haley can get traction, especially since most contests are closed to independents. But the current GOP electorate isn’t big and broad enough to elect a president, especially one who’s running for office to stay out of jail. And Trump isn’t just weak with independents; he has also alienated a sizable share of traditional Republicans, whose votes he can’t afford to lose. Ron DeSantis (remember him?) has dutifully kissed Trump’s ring, but he also surfaced earlier this week on a conservative radio show and said: “When I have people come up to me who voted for Reagan in ’76, and have been conservative their whole life, say that they don’t want to vote for Trump again, that’s a problem…a huge warning sign.” Center-left political analyst Simon Rosenberg, who mocked the conventional wisdom about a “red wave” in the ’22 congressional elections, and who therefore got it right, said this about Trump: “He is a weaker candidate than he was in 2016 or 2020. He is far more degraded, extreme, dangerous. His performance on the stump is far more erratic and unhinged. He keeps making deeply consequential unforced errors like coming out against (Obamacare) and admitting he ended Roe…Republicans are making a huge mistake in nominating him this year.” Which brings us back to that New Hampshire independents stat. Granted, we inhabitants of the American mainstream shouldn’t wipe our brows in relief and assume for a millisecond that democracy will be saved in November. But it’s definitely worth remembering that when this Great and Powerful Oz huffs and puffs, there’s a very beatable con behind that curtain. Aurora’s interim chief of police, Heather Morris, discusses her plans for leading the Aurora Police Department during her first interview with the Sentinel on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024. That’s Chief Morris, now AURORA’S NEW INTERIM POLICE CHIEF, HEATHER MORRIS, SAYS SHE’LL FOCUS ON OUTREACH TO COPS AND PUBLIC
H
eather Morris outlined her plans for strengthening ties between the Aurora police chief’s office and the rest of the police department and city this week, saying one of her top priorities as chief will be building trust through outreach. “I think communication is really important, because in the absence of communication, it’s a vacuum. BY MAX LEVY, Sentinel Staff Writer There’s a hole. And so, we start making things up. It’s just what we do if we don’t know what’s going on,” the city’s latest interim chief of police said Jan. 23, during her first interview with the Sentinel. “This is a really great community, and I’ve really enjoyed getting out and meeting a lot of people, and I’m going to continue to do that.” Morris is the fourth person in two years to hold the reins of the Aurora Police Department — after Vanessa Wilson’s firing in April 2022, the department was led for several months by Dan Oates, who had served as Aurora’s chief a decade prior, at the time of the Century 16 movie theater shooting. The City of Aurora launched a nationwide search for Wilson’s replacement but came up emptyhanded toward the end of Oates’ employment contract. Before his departure, Oates was able to entice another experienced chief to Au-
rora, Art Acevedo, who previously led police departments in Miami, Houston and Austin. Acevedo served as chief for 13 months but never shed the “interim” title. On Jan. 16, he announced publicly that he would step down and return to Texas to spend time with his teenage son. Six days later, the mantle passed to Morris, who worked with Acevedo in Houston and Miami before Acevedo invited her to serve as Aurora’s interim deputy chief last year. Like his predecessors, Acevedo left controversy in his wake. He sniped at police union representatives at a press conference shortly before announcing his resignation, and the City of Aurora has released surveillance camera footage of a heated courthouse argument that happened the following day, where Acevedo appeared to poke the chest of a city attorney as members of the public looked on. Acevedo later said pressure from the city’s police unions — Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 49 and the Aurora Police Association — did not influence his decision to step down. The unions rallied opposition to Wilson in the months before her departure, organizing a “no confidence” vote in October 2021. While Acevedo has not commented on the poking incident, City Manager Jason Batchelor has said it didn’t factor into the chief leaving.
Morris was standing next to Acevedo and Pete Schulte of the City Attorney’s Office during the incident, but brushed it off as “nothing unusual” for the two men, who she described as having “big personalities.” “Had there been an attack, I wouldn’t have been just standing there,” she said. “Anything that was inappropriate in terms of physical contact, I certainly would have intervened.” She declined to say what the two were arguing about, describing the subject matter as “attorney-client privileged.” Morris also said her vision for opening lines of communication between her office and rankand-file officers will involve sitting down and finding common ground with representatives of the department’s two unions. Her comments stood in contrast to the adversarial rhetoric that Acevedo used shortly before leaving the department. During a Jan. 11 press conference, the former chief said that “if you listen to the union rep, no officer has ever done anything wrong.” He also said he did not “care what the union thinks,” adding that “she doesn’t care what the union thinks,” in reference to Morris. “The chief doesn’t speak for me,” Morris said ›› See CHIEF, 7

Aurora lawmakers squabble over member’s decision to bring baby to swearingin ceremony Aurora’s City Council voted last week to boot everyone but select city leaders from the council dais during meetings after one member upset her colleagues by bringing her toddler to the council’s most recent swearing-in ceremony. While Councilmember Alison Coombs described the Dec. 4 ceremony as a special moment that she wanted to share with her child, other council members said they were offended by Coombs’ baby knocking things over on the dais and, at times, crying. “The night that I was sworn in, to have a screaming child on the dais is hard on the child — let’s think about the child — not to mention disruptive and distracting to those who witnessed the event,” Councilmember Stephanie Hancock said Monday. “It minimized the dignity, and the honor, and the professionalism of this body.” Sponsoring the changes to the council’s rules of order and procedure was Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky, who said she “lost all trust” in Coombs after the council member refused to participate in the meeting remotely rather than in-person with her 2-year-old child. Coombs later wrote in an email that Jurinsky never asked her to attend remotely and that she never turned down a request from Jurinsky to do so. Coombs also said Monday she agreed to a request sent after the swearing-in ceremony on behalf of other council members to not bring her child to meetings in the future. Jurinsky and Councilmember Francoise Bergan pointed out that parents who are unable to arrange for child care can still attend meetings remotely, but Coombs described the rule change as hostile to mothers, especially those nursing infants. “It just makes it harder for other moms who maybe don’t have the options that I have,” Coombs said. “I don’t see it as necessary. I’ve agreed to not do the thing that bothered my colleagues that brought this about.” Council members who spoke in favor of the rule changes — including Bergan, Hancock and Jurinsky — are all mothers themselves. No one but the mayor, council members, city manager and city attorney can sit on the dais during meetings under the new rules. Coombs wrote in her email that she believes Jurinsky’s request was more about “being a bully and finding excuses to harass people who disagree with her” than objecting to children on the dais. She also brought up how the changes would allow council members to voluntarily trade seats on the dais, which she characterized as pettiness on the part of Jurinsky. Councilmember Crystal Murillo voted in favor of the rule changes,
the majority of which had to do with revamping the council’s policies on workplace harassment, but said Monday that she was “disappointed” that the policy on switching seats was included and that “people can’t behave on the dais and just be professionals.” The changes passed Jan. 22 with Coombs casting the only “no” vote. — Max Levy, Staff Writer

City says heated courthouse argument didn’t factor into Aurora Chief Acevedo’s resignation An Aurora city attorney was apparently poked but not provoked during an argument with former interim police chief Art Acevedo that got heated earlier this month, saying the altercation captured on courthouse surveillance cameras was “nothing.” “I didn’t think anything of it, just kind of went on my way,” Pete
Schulte of the Aurora City Attorney’s Office said of his Jan. 12 row with Acevedo. “We were having a discussion, and Art got pretty animated, which we both can be. We use our hands to talk a lot. I think that’s what you’ll see in the video. And I didn’t notice him doing the poking motion.” SEE SENTINELCOLORADO.COM FOR ALL THE VIDEOS The Sentinel received a tip about the incident — which happened in the rotunda of the Aurora Municipal Court, in view of city employees and members of the public who gawked at the exchange — and requested the surveillance camera footage
that the city released Jan. 23. Hallway cameras show Acevedo gripping the collar of Schulte’s suit jacket as the two men walk toward the courthouse’s rotunda on the morning of Jan. 12. The two stop next to the rotunda, talking and gesturing at each other for about 20 seconds, before Acevedo appears to become frustrated with someone standing out of view of the cameras and moves on. As the two enter the rotunda and are joined by then-interim deputy chief Heather Morris, other cameras show Acevedo becoming increasingly agitated while talking to Schulte. Then, Acevedo appears to poke Schulte twice in the chest. Morris
reacts to the first poke by folding her arms in front of her, while Schulte does not react. Acevedo then walks off, and the two follow the chief up a staircase. Before leaving, the chief waves toward a person who appears to have been photographing or recording the incident on their cellphone. Schulte wouldn’t say what he and Acevedo were talking about that precipitated the poking but said it wasn’t uncommon for him and the chief to have similar “animated” interactions on the topic of public safety. He served in the interim chief role for about 13 months before stepping down. Acevedo previously served as chief of the Austin Police Department and accepted a job as an assistant city manager and police liaison in the city the same day he told Batchelor he was leaving, City of Austin spokeswoman Shelley Parks confirmed. Acevedo has since backed out of the Austin job, writing in a Jan. 23 social media post that “politics and power struggles” in the Texas city had influenced his decision. Austin City Council members publicly questioned the decision to rehire Acevedo after it was announced, bringing up how the city’s crime lab failed to text thousands of sexual assault kits during Acevedo’s tenure, according to the Austin Chronicle. Batchelor said last week that the city is still determining how it will proceed with filling the Aurora chief’s role. Morris said that if the city and officers approve of the job she does while serving as interim chief, it would be a “privilege” to be appointed permanently. Schulte said he wishes Acevedo the “best of luck” in his next role. “Art served our city well,” Schulte said. “I’m thankful for him being here for the 13 months. I have no ill will.” — Max Levy, Staff Writer
ter Acevedo invited her to join the department last year — said the squabble was “attorney-client privileged.” The footage released by the city did not include audio, and city spokesman Michael Brannen later said the courthouse cameras do not capture audio. Morris and Schulte both laughed when asked whether they thought Acevedo was trying to intimidate or act violently toward Schulte. “There was no assault,” Schulte said. “There was no intimidation. I’ve known Art for a long time, and there was no intimidation factor.” Acevedo did not respond to messages seeking comment. The incident happened on the same day that Schulte and City Manager Jason Batchelor said Acevedo told city leaders he would be stepping down. His resignation was announced publicly four days later, and Morris took over as interim chief on Jan. 22. Batchelor said he didn’t learn about Acevedo and Schulte’s interaction until a few hours after Acevedo told him he was stepping down. “Now, several days later, folks are saying, ‘Oh, that must have been what it was,’” Batchelor said. “There’s no connection between that incident and Art’s departure. Any assertions to the contrary are just not true.” Schulte, too, said the incident had “nothing to do with” Acevedo’s decision to step down. Acevedo said when he announced his departure that he would be returning to Texas to be present for his teenage son. “I can’t be without my boy, and I can’t move him right now, so I have to get home to him, because I want to be judged as a father, and family has to come first,” Acevedo said Jan. 16. “I leave a piece of my heart with Aurora.”
Retail theft, homelessness among top complaints for Havana business owners Amid chatty customers in the middle of a sunny day, Havana Street business owners gathered at Tour Les Jours Bakery on Jan.
26 and had the opportunity to air their business grievances during a roundtable with Congressman Jason Crow. Retail theft and the growing homeless population were the chief complaints business owners had. Sara Mendoza, vice president of a commercial real estate agency, said that some tenants, such as jewelers, have faced “significant blows in the last year with mid-day robberies.” “We need help,” Lori Kropp, a commercial property manager, said. She added that some tenants are unable to file insurance claims after robberies. Crow said that there are existing and nascent programs to prevent youth violence, and to identify and work with high-risk individuals before they commit crimes. Kropp said that while those programs are great, there still needs to be consequences for bad behavior. “We’re just tired of the legislators and the government being on the side of the criminals and not on the side of the victims of those criminals,” she told The Sentinel. Mendoza also said that the growing homeless population is affecting local businesses. She said she works with a security company that is being called more often to deal with the homeless community. The owner of bb.q Chicken, a Korean fried chicken restaurant at 2495 S. Havana St., said that he’s had a lot of issues with the homeless. He added that when the store first opened about a year and a half ago, there were issues of people breaking in and throwing rocks through windows. He did not specify during the roundtable discussion if the people who broke into the store and broke his windows were homeless. He nonetheless echoed Kropp’s sentiments and said that there should be consequences for peo-
ple’s actions. “Nowadays, things are getting better, so I’m happy for that,” the restaurant owner said. Crow said that the roundtable discussion was “super helpful.” He told the crowd that he didn’t have control over law enforcement, but could “move dollars” towards crime prevention and public safety. He added that he “can help with grant money and obviously put pressure on local authorities on issues that fall within state and local authority as well.” — Kristin Oh, Staff Writer
Former Aurora interim police chief turns down Austin job, 1 day after leaving Aurora One day after announcing he was leaving the Aurora Police Department to take a leadership role in the Austin Police Department, Art Acevedo said last week he turned that position down. “While I continue to admire and support these leaders of the Austin community, it is clear that this newly created position has become a distraction from the critical work ahead for our city,” Acevedo said in a social media post Tuesday. “Unfortunately, politics and power struggles have hindered our efforts to create real positive improvements for the people of this city.” Acevedo said he would look for other opportunities. He announced last week that he lamented lost time with his family, who live in Austin. He later announced he had accepted a position in the Austin city manager’s office created for him. — Max Levy, Sentinel Staff SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Colorado bill to make free youth therapy permanent moves forward A pandemic-era program that provides free therapy sessions to Colorado children and teens moved a little closer last week to becoming permanent, easily clearing its first legislative hurdle. The bill to make the 2-year-old I Matter program permanent passed 7-2 in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and will now go to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Supporters of the bill say I Matter has made mental health counseling easy to access for thousands of Colorado students who’ve struggled with unprecedented levels of depression and anxiety in the wake of the pandemic. The program provides six free telehealth or in-person counseling sessions to students in elementary through high school. Students 12 and over can sign up for the therapy sessions by filling out a simple online form. Children under 12 can use the service, but need to fill out a form with a parent. Currently, the annual cost of I Matter is $6 million, but state officials expect it could cost $11 million next year as use increases. If the bill under consideration doesn’t pass, I Matter will expire this summer. During a hearing last week, one mother, Laura Love, told the story of her 14-year-old son Sam, who died by suicide last May. After his death, she went through his phone and discovered he’d recommended I Matter to three friends who’d been facing
their own mental health struggles in the month before he died. “This program even got the attention of a teenage boy who had a hard time sitting still long enough to finish his homework,” she said. “He shared it with friends who were hurting.” Love urged lawmakers to support I Matter’s continuation. “While I can’t bring Sam back, I can help give a voice to so many other kids who are just as incredible as our Sam,” she said. Since I Matter launched in the fall of 2021, nearly 11,000 children and teens have used the program, according to data from Colorado’s Behavioral Health Administration. Sen. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, a Commerce City Democrat and a co-sponsor of the original I Matter bill and the bill to make it permanent, rattled off the number of kids who’ve used I Matter in various counties since the program’s inception: 1,386 in Denver, 1,417 in El Paso, 1,250 in Jefferson, 581 in Weld, and 299 in Eagle. “We’re reaching our people,” she said. “This has proven to help our students and I would like to see it continue.” Several doctors and mental health advocates testified in favor of the bill, describing it as one user-friendly option that can help youth cope during tough times. A few Colorado residents spoke against the program Wednesday, arguing that allowing children 12 and over to use it on their own damages parent-child relationships. A 2019 law — not the original I Matter law — lowered the age that adolescents can seek mental health therapy without parental consent from 15 to 12. Anne Frank, a Denver pediatrician, spoke in support of continuing I Matter, saying it can help teens who might otherwise fall through the cracks because they have no health insurance or face other barriers to mental health care. She described a teenage patient with depression whose parent works a lot and is mostly on his own from morning till night. “This teen is really, really hard-working and was seeking treatment that would fit his life,” she said. “I Matter was easy and he put it in his phone the day I saw him.” He got therapy through the program and felt better when Frank followed up, she said. Riley Haleen, a recent college graduate and a program associate for the Colorado chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said she wished a program like I Matter had been around when she was a teenager. With no money for therapy at the time, she had only her sister to lean on when her stepfather died and her mother battled cancer. “We were each other’s therapy,” she said. “As sweet as that sounds, we needed professional help.” She urged lawmakers to keep the program going. “Students are using it,” she said. “I see the posters in coffee shops and beam with pride when I think about its impact.”
If you are in crisis, please call, text or chat with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, or contact Colorado’s Crisis Line at 1-844-4938255 or by texting TALK to 38255. Correction: Due to incorrect information from the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration, an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that more than 14,000 children and teens have used I Matter since its inception. Nearly 11,000 youth have used the program. — ANN SCHIMKE | Colorado Chalkbeat
Lauren Boebert mounts defense to criticisms of ‘carpetbagging’ in packed first Republican debate Republican primary candidate Mike Lynch didn’t sugarcoat the question to his opponent on the crammed debate stage, Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, who hopped into the race last month partly over fear of a loss in the district she currently represents. “Could you give the definition of ‘carpetbagger?’” Lynch asked to low murmurs from the crowd at the first Republican primary debate in Fort Lupton, a community in Colorado’s 4th District Jan. 26. It was expected. The candidate before Lynch had asked the same question, if more delicately put. The accusation had already been lobbed at Boebert after she joined the packed primary race, escaping a rematch against Democrat Adam Frisch, who nearly beat her in the last election. With Republicans hanging onto control of the U.S. House by their fingertips, Republicans and Democrats are wrestling fiercely over every close race. That includes the seat Boebert holds in Colorado’s 3rd District, which was considered solidly leaning to the GOP but changed to a toss-up for this year after Boebert won by only 546 votes in 2022. The updated assessment partly prompted her flight to the new district and the criticisms that followed. On stage, Boebert didn’t hesitate in response to the attack. “The crops may be different in Colorado’s 4th District but the values are not, and I’m a proven fighter for the values that you all believe in,” said Boebert, her voice forceful over the wide room in a recreation center. The crowd, a who’s who of local Republicans and voters, sat around tables where red popped among dark suits, including red solo cups and Boebert’s signature lipstick. Boebert built herself into a household name with a style of pugilistic politics that has turned otherwise tame moments in Congress into slugfests, along with hard-liner conservative stances and unwavering loyalty to former President Donald Trump. this week. “I speak for myself.” When asked whether she felt the need to reconcile with the unions after Acevedo’s comments, Morris said her concern was “probably not so much about reconciliation” but rather “moving forward.” “It’s based on sharing information and having conversations,” Morris said. “It’s not about me, and it’s not about them. It’s about the men and women of this department. So, I’m going to do everything I can to establish a good relationship and good communication with both the FOP and the APA.” She said she plans to start sharing weekly messages from the chief’s office and regularly attending roll calls and briefings to form a deeper connection with officers. Morris also hopes to build on the progress the department made under Acevedo toward fighting officer shortages through recruitment. As of Tuesday, the department deployed 630 officers, with another 57 officers completing academy training in two classes, out of a budgeted sworn staff of 748. The total number of officers in the academy is the largest the department has seen in years, which Morris credited to changes to the department’s hiring process that were designed to streamline recruitment and meet the requirements of the city’s consent decree reform agreement with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. “We didn’t do this alone,” Morris said, acknowledging the city’s Human Resources Department and the authors of the decree. “We now have the resources to be able to get folks through much quicker and offer up jobs.” The department hopes to bring a cadet program online this year in partnership with the Community College of Aurora, which Morris said could serve as a “bridge” for high school students involved in the APD Explorers program and other young people interested in law enforcement careers. Interim Aurora Police Heather Morris talks with well-wishers before her swearing in ceremony
Jan. 22, 2024 in the lobby of Aurora City Hall Morris said the department will also prepare a strategic plan for retaining officers, incorporating input from her command staff, union leaders and officers themselves. While the department has struggled to meet some of the goals included in the consent decree — specifically concerning the management of use-of-force data, which the firm tasked with monitoring Aurora’s progress has described as “extremely concerning” — Morris said the department is close to publishing its online “transparency portal.” The webpage will make current APD enforcement data available to the public. Morris said the first phase of the rollout will include use-of-force data with a second phase including information about bias-motivated crimes. She said the department’s anti-bias training for officers, for which the consent decree set a deadline of February 2022, will be unveiled “in the next couple of months.” Morris also said she wants to continue to promote proactive policing efforts such as the department’s Direct Action Response Teams and other special units designed to combat gangs and gun violence. Acevedo previously credited a recent local drop in crime to Aurora’s pursuit of proactive policing as well as municipal mandatory minimum sentencing laws, even as the state and other large cities experienced similar drops. When asked whether she would consider sticking around to become the first permanent chief since Wilson’s firing, Morris said she was open to the idea. “If, when we’ve done all these things, the men and women of the department, and the city, and the community want me to remain here as the chief of police, it would be a privilege,” she said. “I’m proud to wear this uniform. I’ve worn the Houston Police Department and Miami Police Department uniforms, and I’m just as proud to wear the Aurora Police Department uniform.”

eff Buck has seen a lot in his lengthy stint as Cherokee Trail boys wrestling coach. For the first time, he saw Centennial League supremacy decided on the mats. Buck came away convinced the league had made the right move to add a league tournament, which took place for the first time Jan. 27 with boys and girls varsity and junior varsity competition at Arapahoe High School. “To be honest, I was on the fence, and I really didn’t know what to expect,” Buck said. “But (Arapahoe) Coach (Steve) Sisler, his staff and parents put on an amazing event. So many kids got a bunch of quality matches. It was a great, great experience and I’m WRESTLING so excited for the future.”
On the mat, the Centennial League Championships did not disappoint. Quintana’s Eaglecrest boys team won the first league championship in program history with a strong finish to the championship round that included key late wins by fall in title matches by seniors Thayne Lundy (175 pounds) and Dalton Leivian (190). The Raptors also had league winners in senior Adonias Cantu (113) and junior Alijah Gabaldon (126). Eaglecrest held off a charge from Grandview, which finished seven points behind in second place. The Wolves had four league champions in senior 132-pounder Nehemiah Quintana (who picked up his 100th career win with a pin in the final), sophomore Jonathan Montes Gonzales (150), junior Charlie Herting (165) and freshman Leland Day (285). Cherokee Trail, which finished eight points behind Mullen in the chase for third place, had four finalists and the 106-pound champion in freshman phenon Cooper Mathews. Overland had the other Aurora-area weight winner in senior Eric Kelly, who claimed the 144-pound bracket. Junior Dashawn Jenkins earned Smoky Hill’s highest place as he won a second-place wrestleback to finish second at 106 pounds. The Centennial League Championship girls tournament was smaller with only five programs and without full brackets in most weights, but still saw an abundance of quality matches. Eaglecrest cruised to the championship with a total of 21 placers. Coach Horatio Vialpando’s Raptors had champions at 100 pounds (senior Chasey Karabell), 105 (freshman Madalynn David), 145 (senior Lilyana Valdez), 190 (senior Gianna Falise) and 235 (sophomore Emma Roberts). “I was definitely for this, I think it makes a league championship feel real as opposed to just in duals,” said Vialpando, whose team is the largest in the league as it includes athletes from multiple schools. “Our girls got to showcase how good we are in a tournament setting,” he added. Third-place Overland had champions in Violet Garcia (115) and Natalee Alderete (130), while fourth-place Smoky Hill saw Maddie Patterson claim the 140-pound bracket.
Mat matters In the past, All-Centennial League accolades were decided on voting by coaches, a lengthy process made challenging by the depth of talent in the league. The team league championship went to the program with the best record in dual matches, which can be an imperfect test of teams, especially given that strategy often plays more of a role than actual wrestling in the result. BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports Editor All that ambiguity got eliminated when the league voted to add the tournament. With a set-up that also included a true second place, all-league first and second team honors were earned. “This allows us to just let the wrestling do the talking,” said Eaglecrest coach Javier Quintana. “Coaches often do whatever they can to win a dual, but in this case, we just enter our lineup and see who’s standing at the end.” The addition of the league tournament provided some other benefits. League teams no longer needed to have duals with all the other programs — though they still keep most of them on the schedule — which opened up possibilities to set up competition with other like programs around the area and state.

FOOTBALL
Eaglecrest hires Jesse German as new head football coach Eaglecrest High School became the first Aurora area program to officially fill its head football coaching vacancy, as it brought aboard Jesse German Jan 26. German comes to the program from Lakewood’s Green Mountain German High School, which he has coached since 2018 after spending two seasons as an assistant. In German’s time as head coach, the Rams have gone 52-17 with five trips to the Class 3A state playoffs, including three times in the semifinals. Eaglecrest tabbed German six weeks after the departure of Mike Schmitt, who headed to his native Louisiana to take a coaching/athletic director job at Prairieville High School. “Coach German is a highly successful coach that seemed to check all the boxes for us,” Eaglecrest athletic director Vince Orlando told the Sentinel in a statement. “We expect his impact to be significant and push us forward as a 5A contender for years to come.” German’s Green Mountain team finished 12-1 in the 2023 season. The Rams were the top seed in the 3A playoffs and fell to Lutheran in the semifinals. German has previous head coaching experience in Colorado at Northfield, while he was also an assistant at Bear Creek. Schmitt led Eaglecrest to 7-4 seasons and berths in the 5A state playoffs in each of the past two seasons. Announcements on hires from Overland and Vista PEAK Prep are expected in the near future.

REGIONAL MEXICAN MUSIC IS CROSSING BORDERS, GOING GLOBAL AND ALL OVER AURORA
R
egional Mexican music — a catchall term that encompasses mariachi, banda, corridos, norteño, sierreño and other genres — has become a global phenomenon, topping music charts and reaching new audiences as it crosses borders. While it has been around the U.S. for decades — with the late Selena Quintanilla weaving pop, disco and R&B rhythms into her Tejano music in the ’80s and ’90s — something extraordinary happened in the last year. Eslabon Armado and Peso BY MARIA SHERMAN AND BERENICE BAUTISTA Associated Press Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” single surpassed a billion streams on Spotify last month, becoming the first regional Mexican Top 10 hit on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100, peaking at No. 4. Days later, Bad Bunny’s collaboration with Grupo Frontera, “Un x100to,” hit No. 5. According to Luminate’s 2023 end-of-year report, four of the six Latin artists to reach 1 billion audio streams in the U.S. were Mexican artists: Peso Pluma, Eslabon Armado, Junior H and Fuerza Regida. They were in the top 125 artists streamed. Overall, regional Mexican music grew 60% in the U.S., accounting for a whopping 21.9 billion on-demand audio streams. How did this happen? The Associated Press reached out to musicians, producers and industry experts to get a sense of the evolution of regional Mexican music ahead of the 66th Grammy Awards on Feb. 4.
A LONG TIME COMING Leila Cobo, Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin music coverage, always believed Mexican music was going to be huge in the U.S., given its large Mexican American population. “But I never, in a million years, thought it was going to become so global,” she says. For Cobo, one of the factors contributing to regional Mexican music’s global reach is streaming, which democratized listening habits and allowed listeners who might not otherwise come across this music to fall in love with it. On Spotify, Mexican music grew 400% worldwide over the last five years, according to Uriel Waizel, lead editor at Spotify Mexico. And on YouTube, Peso Pluma bested Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny to become 2023’s most streamed artist on the platform. In addition to streaming, Cobo points at a large population of Mexican descent in the U.S. interested in exploring the music of their ancestors — and a new generation of musicians embracing the genre but mixing it up with rap, reggaeton and electronic instrumentation, invigorating it in the process. “It went from being music that was a little bit old-fashioned,” Cobo says. “But now I see a movement. And I think that is exciting.” Waizel says that while Mexican music is centuries old, “current Mexican music is breaking because it is the music that young people listen to.” Spotify confirmed that last month, 56% of those listening to Latin American artists were under 30. In Mexico, that jumps to 60% of lis-
teners. “Before, parents taught regional music to their children, but now the young people are the ones who are teaching their parents music,” says DannyLux, a 19-year-old singer of sad sierreño, a novelty subgenre that surfaced almost five years ago. “Regional music is reaching the heights of reggaeton, which was not seen before.” >>>>A MOVEMENT, NOT A MOMENT For Grammy-winning producer Édgar Barrera, to understand regional Mexican music, listeners must first understand that “it is a movement” finally having its “moment to shine globally,” because regional Mexican artists now encompass a variety of genres and sounds. He cites the cumbias of Grupo Frontera and the corridos tumbados of Peso Pluma, both with very different lyrical approaches: “And they are doing numbers that the American artists are doing.” Artists like Frontera, Fuerza Regida and Junior H are selling out “the same venues that Drake goes to a week later,” he says. Barrera believes part of the cross-border appeal is that these regional Mexican genres are founded in live instrumental performance — guitars, tubas, trombones, trumpets and more. “They are real musicians, they are people making real music, not a computer where you are programming or grabbing something from a sound library,” he says. ›› See Las notas altas, 14

D
aranee Teng of Denver did not have to survive a war to experience colonialism and the generational trauma caused by it. Teng’s great-grandmother, Lim Cher Liang, grew up in 20th century Indonesia, where Dutch colonizers enslaved and exploited people for centuries. Around 1912, just as the Indonesian nationalism movement was beginning to grow, she escaped to Guangdong Province in southeastern China. She adopted a Chinese name, eventually got married and had a family there. Lim Cher Liang’s Indonesian birth name is lost to history, but she ensured her experience was not, passing down her stories of resilience in the face of oppression and discrimination to Teng’s grandmother, mother and eventually to her. “I think it’s important not to remove ourselves from our ancestors…and learn from the people who came before us,” Teng said.
It’s why Teng and the Shoes Off Collective, a new organization of Colorado’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community members, are standing in solidarity with Palestinians amid the war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “We can see so many of our own families’ histories and experiences reflected in the Middle East,” members of the Collective explained in a Nov. 16 letter demanding that Colorado’s Congressional lawmakers call for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian war and an end to U.S. military aid for Israel in Israel. “We not only fear that we are witnessing a genocide in Gaza, but that the United States is complicit in this massacre. It is crucial that we, as Americans, stand for peace, diplomacy, and the protection of human rights.” The letter was also signed by over 200 AANHPI community members, some of whom reiterated their concerns with four Democratic congresspeople: Diana Degette, Yadira Caraveo, Brittany Petersen and Jason Crow. (Rep. Joe Neguse did not respond to the organization’s request for a meeting.) DeGette and Crow each released statements in December about increasing humanitarian aid and protecting civilian lives, but they stopped short of calling for a ceasefire. We have clearly communicated our concerns, so it is deeply disappointing to see the lack of movement,” said Joie Ha, member of the Shoes Off Collective. The conflict began on Oct. 7, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostage. Israel’s military retaliated in a series of brutal air, sea and ground offensives. According to a report from Al Jazeera, more than 26,000 Gazans have been killed and more than 64,000 injured. About 1.7 million people now live in refugee camps. The Associated Press is reporting that about half of all buildings in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged beyond repair. As the conflict has dragged on, public sentiment has been divided. Many around the world are calling for a ceasefire and are protesting, boycotting companies that are supporting Israel, and promoting Palestinian voices on social media. Those who are supporting Israel have also held protests, and are claiming that criticisms against Israel are anti-semitic. Locally, hundreds attended an Aurora City Council meeting in October when the city council passed a resolution condemning Hamas’ attack on Israel. The Shoes Off Collective has also organized several local events to highlight Palestinian culture. Their workshops on Palestinian embroidery, called tatreez, are sold out. They are also planning to hold a lecture series with Palestinian experts. “Even if a person has not been directly impacted by colonization, our tax dollars are going towards funding a genocide,” Teng said.
Neal Walia’s grandfather lived in Himachal Pradesh, a province in northern India that was once home to Muslims, Sihks and Hindus. In August 1947, after 300 years of British rule, India was partitioned into two separate nation-states: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan, forcing millions of people to uproot their families and relocate, and causing communities that had coexisted for centuries to spiral into sectarian violence. Some, like Walia’s grandfather, chose not to leave, knowing that they could be targeted by religious extremists. Walia’s grandfather and his friends made a secret pact to protect one another. They hid Muslim friends in their basements whenever there were riots. They saved many, but they also lost friends and family to violence. “These stories have been passed down to my parents and then to me, my sister, and my cousins,” Walia said. “[They] very much shape my values of building solidarity and standing with people and communities that are different from my own.” Cultural and historical understanding are not the only things connecting people to Palestinians. They are also united by common incidents of racism and hate crimes — a trend that often repeats itself during international tragedies. Walia was 13 when, on Sept. 11, 2001, when 19 militiants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda carried out the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, a series of airline hijackings and suicide attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Walia wasn’t Muslim, nor is he Arabic, but he was the target of racist sentiments, some from people he considered friends. “I’ve been called every derogatory slur you can think of, from ‘terrorist’ to names I won’t say out loud,” he said. The number of anti-Muslim hate crimes increased from 28 in 2000 to 481 in 2001 across the country, according to Human Rights Watch. From 2001 to 2015, federal agencies have investigated over 800 incidents of violence, threats, vandalism and arson against Arab-Americans, Muslims, Sikhs, South-Asian Americans and other individuals perceived to be of Middle Eastern origin The same hate crimes and discrimination seen after 9/11 is being repeated in the United States today. A week after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, a 71-yearold Illinois landlord fatally stabbed a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy and injured his mother. The man told police he was upset over the Israel-Hamas war and attacked them. In another suspected hate crime, three 20-year-old Palestinian college students were injured in a shooting. Police said that the three college students were speaking in a mix of English and Arabic, and two of them were also wearing the black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh, scarves, when they were shot. “We are connected to this moment,” Walia said. “Whether it’s Palestine, Iraq, India, a lot of us who live here go through these shared experiences of when any of our countries are put into positions like this.”
What’s happening now? On Jan. 11, 2024, South Africa formally accused Israel of committing genocide at the International Court of Justice at The Hague. On Jan. 26, the court ordered Israel to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza, but the panel stopped short of ordering Jerusalem to end the military offensive that has laid waste to the Palestinian enclave. Still the court’s half-dozen orders will be difficult to achieve without some sort of cease-fire or pause in the fighting. Teng said that South Africa’s actions are a powerful statement, and an example of how people from historically marginalized communities should help fight for “collective liberation.” “Some of us were taught to keep our heads down and mind our own business,” Teng said. “Some of us don’t see the connections between our own family histories and global colonial movements, but I think it’s really important to actively look for those connections because they’re there.”

Laughing at the art of the ‘ART’
The Aurora Fox Arts Center launches 2024 with the internationally acclaimed comedy, ‘ART’, by Yasmina Reza. The show is a sharp, witty exploration of art and friendship, performed at the Fox’s Studio Theatre. The show opens Feb. 3 and runs through Feb. 24. ‘ART,’ translated by Christopher Hampton and directed by Kate Gleason, has garnered international recognition, including the Tony Award for Best Play, the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and the NY Drama Critics Award for Best Play. The play revolves around three friends and a controversial white painting, sparking intense debates and challenging the trio’s long-standing bonds. Matthew Schneck and Gareth Saxe help bring to life this engaging story where the purchase of an abstract painting leads to a comedic yet profound dissection of friendship and art. The play questions the value of art and examines how personal interpretations can strain relationships. ‘ART’ promises an 85-minute roller coaster of emotions. The play is billed as suitable for audiences 16 and older. The play contains adult language.

The 2015 Tony Award winner for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize finalist is praised as “a fresh, daring new musical” and “a heart-breaking human story.” It navigates through the life of Alison, exploring her childhood at her family’s funeral home, her journey of self-discovery, and the complex relationship with her father. The Aurora cast includes Mac Vasquez and Adeleia Odekirk as Little Alison, River Hetzel as Medium Alison, and Maya Ferrario as Adult Alison, among others. The local production is produced and performed by an entirely queer creative team and crew, paying homage to its source material with themes of family, memory, and identity. A ROCKY ROAD TO WORLDWIDE SUCCESS
bounded, she is “very excited,” even if the songs are a hybrid approach to the genre.
REGIONAL IS INTERNATIONAL
It wasn’t long ago that regional Mexican music was in a tough spot. For some, the music was subject to a kind of classism, vilified the same way reggaeton was before it became accepted the world over. Now, a new generation is responsible for refreshing the way in which the world looks at it, the very reason singer Pedro Tovar of Eslabon Armado hopes the genre will change from “regional Mexican” to just “Mexican music.” “The roots are there,” for a younger generation of listeners, “and the genre is expanding more and more,” he says. That wasn’t always the case. Less than a decade ago, the category for best ranchera/mariachi music album was completely removed from the 2016 Latin Grammys due to too few entries in a year also marked by the death of icon Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernández’s retirement from the stage. “We started sounding the alarm years in advance to say ‘this genre is going down,’” said Gabriel Abaroa Jr., president of the Latin Recording Academy, in an interview with the AP at the time. Actor and singer Lucero, a veteran performer of regional Mexican music, also remembers those days. “A few years ago, the problem was that regional music was disappearing, and it was increasingly difficult to sing ranchera songs,” she says. But now that it has re-
Last summer, at the Premios Juventud awards show in Puerto Rico, Mexican singer-songwriter Carín León wore a t-shirt that read “F--- Regional,” an apparent reference to the phrase “regional Mexican music,” and later published a manifesto chastising the ways in which different types of Mexican folk music have been restricted by the term. “Labeling it regional” is wrong, he told the AP. “We are not more ‘regional,’ we are more ‘international.’” And it’s not just Mexican artists experimenting with the genre. Colombian superstar Maluma released a pop-norteño track on his 2023 album “Don Juan,” called “Según Quién,” a collaboration with León. Maluma told the AP he sensed years ago that corridos and banda music were going to enter the global music market. So, he called up Barrera, the producer, in 2018 and said: “I need different instrumentals because I want to start writing Mexican songs, like, regional music. He said, ‘Why? Let’s keep doing reggaeton,’ and I was like, ‘You’ll see!’” Then the sound was everywhere. “I’m so glad that it happened because we really needed it in the industry,” Maluma says. “That Mexican sauce we were missing in the global view of Latin music.”
A NEW SOURCE OF PRIDE While there is no shortage of musical genres to play with, young Latin American musicians continue to embrace — and experiment with — regional Mexican music. They see it as a point of pride, a connection with and a celebration of their identity. It is something Mexican American artist Becky G, 26, accomplished with her latest album, “Esquinas,” which she described as “a love letter to my abuelitos, to my younger self and, hopefully, to the future generations.” “Since I was a child I always talked with my grandparents about doing a project totally inspired by regional Mexican music,” she said. And to perform at a time when regional Mexican music is bigger than ever is something she describes as “a source of pride for us Mexicans.” Peso Pluma, 24, couldn’t agree more. “It feels great, hearing all these people from different countries listening and singing (along) to my songs, it’s just a dream, man,” he told the AP at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. “I’m very grateful for the genre that I do,” he said. “It’s going global and it’s breaking barriers. And I’m just thankful for all the people that are supporting Mexican music.”

Based on the findings of these inspections, a comprehensive management plan has been developed for each site. Each plan identifies locations and types of asbestos-containing materials in the building and details the district’s ongoing efforts to maintain or remove those materials. The plans are continually updated with documentation of asbestos-related work performed at the site. The plans are available for review at each site, and at the Environmental Compliance Branch located at 1369 Airport Boulevard Aurora, CO 80011. This letter also serves as notification of any asbestos-related efforts which may be performed by the district at any time such as, periodic surveillances, 3-year reinspection, O and M and asbestos removal. written verified statement of claim prior to such final settlement will release Aurora High Point at DIA Metropolitan District, its Board, officers, agents, and employees of and from any and all liability for such claim. BY ORDER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Aurora High Point at DIA Metropolitan District By: /s/ David Solin Secretary First Publication: February 1, 2024 Final Publication: February 8, 2024 Sentinel BEFORE THE COLORADO GROUND WATER COMMISSION DETERMINATIONS OF WATER RIGHT KIOWA-BIJOU DESIGNATED GROUNDWATER BASIN AND NORTH KIOWA BIJOU GROUND WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT- ARAPAHOE COUNTY TAKE NOTICE that pursuant to section 37-90-107(7), C.R.S., and the Designated Basin Rules, 2 CCR 410-1, Gary May and Stacie J. May (“Applicant”) have applied for a determination of right to an allocation of designated groundwater from the Arapahoe aquifer (receipt no. 10033173) underlying 385 acres generally described as two noncontiguous tracts: Area A - 191 acres north of Interstate 70; and Area B 194 acres between interstate 70 and State Highway 36; all in Section 8, Township 4 South, Range 61 West of the 6th P.M. (“Overlying Land”) and for a determination of right to an allocation of designated groundwater from the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer (receipt no. 10033172) underlying 77 acres generally described as that portion north of Interstate 70 in the NE 1/4 of Section 8, Township 4 South, Range 61 West of the 6th P.M., not allocated under Determination of Water Right no. 845BD, in Arapahoe County (“New Overlying Land”). The Applicant claims ownership of this land and control of the groundwater in these aquifers underlying the property. The groundwater from these allocations is proposed to be used on the 385 acre Overlying Land for the following beneficial uses: industrial, commercial, irrigation, stock, domestic, and replacement. In accordance with section 37-90-107(7), the Colorado Ground Water Commission shall allocate groundwater from the above aquifers based on ownership of the overlying land. A preliminary evaluation of the application finds the volume of water available for allocation to be 3,250 acre-feet for Area A and 3,300 acre-feet for Area B from the Arapahoe aquifer underlying the Overlying Land and 1,620 acre-feet from the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer underlying the New Overlying Land (New Underlying Groundwater). These amounts are subject to final evaluation, and subsequent to issuance of the determinations, adjustment to conform to the actual local aquifer characteristics. In accordance with Rule 5.3.6 of the Designated Basin Rules, preliminary evaluation of the applications finds the replacement water requirement status to be not-nontributary (actual impact replacement) for the Arapahoe aquifer underlying the Overlying Land and nontributary for the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer underlying the New Overlying Land. FURTHER TAKE NOTICE that the Applicant also seeks to combine the pending allocation of designated groundwater from the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer (determination application receipt no. 10033172) with the allocation of the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer from Determination of Water Right no. 845-BD. Pursuant to section 3790-107(7) in a Findings and Order dated February 8, 2006, the Commission issued Determination of Water Right no. 845-BD to the Applicant, which determined a right to an allocation of designated groundwater from the Laramie-Fox Hills Aquifer underlying the 385 acres of the above described noncontiguous Overlying Land (“845-BD Overlying Land”, which is the same as the Overlying Land). The allowed average annual amount of groundwater allocated from beneath the 845-BD Overlying Land is 23.9 acre-feet for Area A and 34.7 acrefeet for Area B. The resulting total amount of groundwater allocated based on a 100year aquifer life is 2,390 acre-feet for Area A and 3,470 acre-feet for Area B (“845-BD Underlying Groundwater”). The overlying area used to determine the 845-BD allocation for Area A was reduced by the 77 acres of New Overlying Land due to a previous appropriation of the groundwater by well no. 13130-RFP. The allowed withdrawal for well 13130-RFP was reduced after issuance of 845-BD as a result of the final permitting process such that the cylinder of appropriation for this well no longer overlaps the 77 acres of Area A of the 845BD Overlying Land. The allowed types of beneficial uses and allowed place of use of the 845-BD Underlying Groundwater are industrial, commercial, irrigation, stock, domestic, pond evaporation, augmentation, and replacement on the above-described 385 acres of 845-BD Overlying Land. No change to 845-BD is being sought. The existing allocation for the 845-BD Underlying Groundwater may be subsumed into a single new determination of water right, so long as pursuant to section 3790-107(7)(c)(III), C.R.S., the amounts of
the 845-BD Underlying Groundwater and Laramie-Fox Hills New Underlying Groundwater are final amounts of groundwater so determined from beneath the Overlying Land; except that the Commission shall retain jurisdiction for subsequent adjustment of such amounts to conform to the actual local aquifer characteristics from adequate information obtained from well drilling or test holes. In accordance with section 37-90-107(7) (a), well permits issued pursuant to subsection 107(7) shall allow withdrawals on the basis of an aquifer life of one hundred years. Upon Commission approval of determinations of rights to the allocations, well permits for wells to withdraw the allocations shall be available upon application, subject to the conditions of each determination, the Designated Basin Rules, and approval by the Commission. Such wells must be completed in the aquifer for which the right was allocated and must be located on the 385 acre Overlying Land. Well permits for wells to withdraw not-nontributary (actual impact replacement) groundwater from the Arapahoe aquifer would also be subject to the conditions of a replacement plan to be approved by the Commission. Any person wishing to object to the approval of these determinations of rights to allocations must do so in writing, briefly stating the nature of the objection, the name of the applicant, a general description of the property, and the specific aquifer(s) and related receipt no(s). of the application(s) that are the subject of the objection. The objection, including a required $10 fee per application being objected to, must be received by the Colorado Ground Water Commission by close of business March 9, 2024. Objections should be sent via email to DWRpermitsonline@state.co.us, upon which the objector will be emailed an invoice for paying the fee online. If the objector is unable to provide the objection via email please contact 303-866-3581. Keep Your Family Warm This Winter
representatives do not have to live in the district they represent, only the state, Boebert is moving to Weld County in her new district, jokingly described by the moderator as “the most heavily Republican seat on the planet Earth.” The corner of the Great Plains is a sweep of prairie grass and farms broken only by ranching towns where auctioneers chant the weight and price of cattle near every week. Voters supported Trump by nearly 20 percentage points in 2020, more than double the margin in Boebert’s old district. Jerry Sonnenberg, a popular former state senator with a tactically deployed baritone, was among the six of nine candidates on stage who raised their hands when asked if they had been arrested, to raucous applause. Another, Rep. Richard Holtorf, the Republican whip in the Colorado House, has been most outspoken about Boebert’s move. Deborah Flora, a filmmaker and radio host, was the first to levy her question of switching districts at Boebert on stage. State Rep. Lynch also exchanged barbs with Boebert. Lynch was Colorado’s House minority leader until he stepped down Wednesday after a 2022 arrest for drunken driving came to light, an issue that was largely met with forgiveness by fellow contestants. Boebert was caught on video vaping and groping with a date in a Denver theater in September, but the embarrassing episode went unmentioned at the debate. Still, the scandal may be hard to shake in Boebert’s new elector-
al stomping grounds, where voters hold tight to conservative Christian values some feel she transgressed. The congresswoman must rely on her national name and convince skeptical voters that her voice is needed in Congress more than those of her homegrown opponents, some of whom have lived in the district their entire lives and represent parts of the area in Colorado’s Legislature. Boebert focused on her experience in Congress as the key factor separating her from the candidates on stage. “Everyone will talk like a Freedom Caucus member but there is only one who governs as a Freedom Caucus member,” she said. “I am here to earn your support, earn your vote. This is not a coronation.” Boebert’s primary rivals largely seemed hesitant to directly attack her onstage, which was reminiscent of the Republican presidential primary candidates who avoided criticism of Trump in early debates. The debate also largely centered on national political issues including border security, abortion and fentanyl, on which Boebert could laud her stubbornly conservative voting record. Her opponents didn’t raise local issues they may have thought she was unprepared to represent. Before switching districts, Boebert had been expected to face a rematch against Frisch, who had already raised more money than she had. Political experts generally agree Republicans have a better chance of holding onto the 3rd District without Boebert in the race. — JESSE BEDAYN Associated Press

Margaret Shepherd was born in Louisburg, NC to Asher Frank Johnson and Florence Margaret Johnson, the third of seven children. She lived in NC and then Miami, FL, finally moving to Aurora, CO in 1982 for the birth of her first grandchild. She was a hard worker, supporting her children, Denise Livingston and Dennis Dickerson, sometimes working two jobs to do so. After she retired, she devoted herself to her children, grandchildren (4) and great grandchildren (6), and her many friends and her church. She loved Jesus and loved music and reading. She was generous and became Grandma to many children who loved her. She will be missed by all of us, and she was ready to go to meet her Lord.
