Legislators throw a lifeline to strapped renters. Keep swimming.

There is one tried and true way to affect the price of rent: vacancies.

One of the biggest drivers of increased rental costs in the metroplex — as well as much of the state and the nation — is a dearth of empty rentals.

For the past few years, rents have gone up, and renters pay it. Without opposing market forces, little else can control the rental market, and the real estate market, too.

Colorado has become a magnet for good-paying jobs and relatively young, cash-flush people to take them. Despite a stunning recent rental-housing building boon, demand continues to flag or surpass supply.

The Legislature’s answer to all this has centered on not just building more housing, but building more housing where people live much closer together. It’s nearly the antithesis of how the Front Range developed over the past century.

The metroplex and almost every other Front Range community is pegged on big yards, far apart, connected to myriad streets where almost all of us get around in a car, and often alone.

More dwellings, smaller and closer together, in places where you don’t have to get in a car every time you leave your house really could reduce traffic, and hence pollution. It would reduce energy and water usage.

But will it directly reduce the cost of rent?

Maybe. But not fast.

Despite the unclear path to cheaper rent mapped out by state lawmakers, bills they passed and Gov. Jared Polis signed could have many positive effects in a few years, among them, helping push down rents.

House Bill 1313 promotes multi-family housing along transit corridors in the metroplex and beyond.

The Sentineland others lauded the bill, and for good reason. It’s tied to $35 million in incentives going to cities that “comply” with the density standards.

Since Aurora and Denver have already designed their lightrail corridors to pack in multifamily housing, this is a winning proposition for everyone.

Will it help drive down rental costs? The Colorado Sun reports that a Minneapolis study of similar proposals there did just that.

A more complicated but compelling idea in House Bill 1152 could have more profound effects across the region.

The bill presses cities and HOAs to allow many homeowners to build so-called “accessory dwelling units” in their yards. We

know these ADUs as “mother-in-law” units or “granny flats.”

Not only could this create relatively cheap housing in big backyards, or turning a garage into a rental unit, it could also create a source of revenue for millions of people in Colorado.

For those with homes on alleys and room to modify a garage or tear down an old one and put up an ADU, this is an attractive plan. It gets more complicated in areas where set-backs from existing homes and neighbors’ property creates real issues.

Far more practical and long overdue is House Bill 1007. This measure prohibits local governments and HOAs from limiting how many unrelated people can live together.

If a house is designed and approved for 6 residents, it’s no one’s business but the residents living there what their relationship is. Such “You plus two” scams — essentially forcing anyone but immediate families from living in a home — have long been side-eye ways for cities to discriminate against migrants and unrelated poor people.

This measure is most likely to have a measurable effect on cutting rent bills among renters sharing a home, as well as affecting the overall vacancy rate, and reducing rents.

Other statewide measures signed into law this month are likely helpful, but not soon enough.

House Bill 1304 backs off of parking minimums for multi-family housing. You don’t have to drive far in Aurora to see the positive impact of this measure.

Shuttle around almost any of the city’s big and small apartment complexes early on a Sunday, when almost everyone is home, and you can see all the open asphalt where residents’ cars aren’t parked. Land, like water, is money here in Colorado, and too much land is set aside for cars that don’t exist. More apartments and fewer parking spaces really can reduce rents.

Will your rent go down by Christmas? Not from any of these measures.

Fewer people moving to the metroplex and more people moving away from it will push down rents quickest.

But given that Colorado, and especially the Front Range, are poised to continue to attract more people than leave the region every year, all of these bills will work to prevent the very real pain we’ve inflicted on ourselves from not taking action like this a decade ago, when it probably would have helped now. Editorials

Election deniers can’t hold elected office. They’re liars.

The nation has long worried about national threats and worked to combat them, mostly successfully.

Now, the threat is especially dangerous and from within not just the nation, but the nation’s government.

A new report made public this week by States United Action reveals that almost a third of Congress “in some way supported Trump’s bid to overturn the 2020 results or otherwise cast doubt on the reliability of elections.”

More specifically, 170 representatives and senators — out of 535 — “can be categorized as election deniers,” the Associated Press reported.

The news is not just startling, but frightening.

Despite years of scrutiny in every electoral venue across the country, there has been no proof, none, that significant fraud, malfeasance, technical issues or miscounting cheated Donald Trump out of a single election victory, and absolutely not from his Electoral College contest for president.

That fact isn’t new. It isn’t ambiguous and it isn’t anything but widespread, absolute and unequivocal. It means that 170 current members of Congress, and even more trying to get there, are liars. These are dishonest or dangerously deluded people who we depend on to make critical decisions for all of us, every day.

No longer is Trump’s “stolen election” deceit flouted primarily by populist political creatures like Colorado’s Rep. Lauren Boebert and congressional hopeful and Colorado GOP Chairperson Dave Williams. Now, even powerful members of Congress like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Trump vice-presidential contender Sen. Tim Scott murmur and repeat the dishonest warblings of the nation’s election deniers, such as “we’ll see” and seeing a need for “free and fair elections.”

It is dangerous and impolitic for voters to put trust in elected officials who refuse to accept the will of the voters, and who would instead try and circumvent that will.

As a polarized and fitful nation, we must work harder to increase civil discourse, compromise and consensus when it comes to public policy. Electing flagrant liars makes those goals impossible because of the lack of trust.

Despite the insistence of Trump and others, there are no “alternative” facts. Reality is not a debatable quality when it comes to running the government.

Trump and other deniers are welcome to continue to search for proof and facts to support their case, but not a single court — even in states where Trump voters prevailed — have found for the deniers.

Deniers are welcome to refuse to give up or even give in, but they can’t run the government. That’s the opposite of democracy, and it’s unacceptable.

The clear duty for voters, as the 2024 Election gets underway in earnest, is to press candidates for certainty on this question.

“Do you believe that, anywhere in the United States, election fraud prevented Trump from an electoral victory?” Or to be even more clear, “Do you have faith in the current electoral system, and will you honor its results?”

If the answer to the last question is “no,” voters should disqualify that candidate for their own benefit, and that of the country.

Rounding the corners can be scary

I’m such a square, my ears have corners. I drink eight cups of water a day. I make my bed every morning. Before going to the supermarket, I write a grocery list.

But this scintillating lifestyle has its drawbacks. I’ve started to notice how epic motorcycles look. I’ve started to think about taking up martial arts.

I’ve started to wonder if I should spend my money on something that isn’t retirement.

Sure, I take risks. Sometimes, when I’m finished washing dishes, I turn off the kitchen light switch with wet hands.

But I want to do something bigger, something greater. I want to jump a motorcycle over the Grand Canyon.

Afterward, I’d blow my retirement savings on hospital bills. But I’d have a heck of a story to tell the grandkids.

Right now, it feels like the only thing my future descendants will hear about is why you should chew 30 times before you swallow, or some tripe like that.

I have to turn my life around. I’m young enough to have a shot at acquiring an interesting past, and I’ll be darned if I miss my chance.

I could start by using stronger language. I mean to say, I’m young, and I’ll be danged if I miss… dashed if I miss… oh, never mind. I have principles, doggone it.

At least I’ve started being more spontaneous. Last week, just for kicks, I took a different bus route. I ended up 40 minutes late for work.

But I bounced over some new and interesting potholes.

And I chatted with some interesting people. I sat next to a gal who did stunts for small-time films.

She showed me a video of herself at work. It consisted of her falling down stairs, crashing through fences, and driving a car through every single mailbox on some street.

I don’t need to go to stunt school. I do all those things already, easy.

So I asked her about the coolest stunts she’d seen, and after a few minutes of such talk, popped the big question. You know, about jumping the Grand Canyon on a motorcycle.

She told me that it would be a darn silly idea,

only in stronger language.

I know I look like the kind of person who brushes her teeth after every meal, I replied, but I’m trying to round my corners. I’m open to stunt work. Really.

She repeated that I couldn’t jump the Grand Canyon. She said it was impossible. Not to put too fine a point on it, she insisted that it measures 18 miles across.

That rather put a damper on my plans.

Then she told me that stuntwork isn’t for everyone. You get bruises. The pay isn’t great.

Sometimes you wish that you could wake up to a nine-to-five, rather than wake up because you’ve been hit over the head with a crowbar.

Her words made an impact on me, though not literally.

Risk is good. It adds variety. It expands your horizons. It’s a neat board game.

But the little, routine things we do? They help you be there for the bigger things, like your family and friends.

Drinking eight cups of water daily, saving money, and eating vegetables may be dull. But they let you acquire an interesting past because they help you live long enough to do it.

And they let you stick around for the really awesome things in life. Like when I jump a motorcycle over the Mississippi River.

Drilling for consensus

HUNDREDS TURN OUT TO OPPOSE LOWRY RANCH OIL DRILLING PROJECT NEAR AURORA RESERVOIR

Hundreds of people turned out May 16 for a public meeting about a controversial oil project just outside southeast Aurora, most of them critical of the proposal, citing various environmental, health and public safety concerns.

The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission held a public meeting Thursday evening at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds to solicit public comment on the Lowry Ranch oil and gas project, near the Aurora Reservoir.

Civitas Resources, a Denver based energy company, submitted a proposal for this project in 2022. According to the state Energy and Carbon Management Commission, this development would involve 166 new wells across hundreds of acres in the region, some on public lands. The new oil and gas locations would be located east of Monaghan Road.

The fracking project has faced resistance from a wide range of area residents and environmentalists, citing its proximity to the Aurora Reservoir and Lowry Landfill Superfund Site. Arapahoe County Commissioners last year narrowly turned down a county hiatus on granting oil-and-gas applications while the county reviewed its permitting process.

Since then, the project has been amended to preclude fracking and drilling beneath the Superfund site.

“After careful consideration of the EPA’s concerns and the existing environmental contamination at this Site, Civitas is committing to not penetrating the subsurface under the Superfund Site by limiting the horizontal bores of the State Sneffels wells to approximately 2.25 miles, in order to avoid the Site,” Civitas engineer Dan Harrington

said in a letter to county, federal and state officials. “This precaution is not due to any risk associated with oil and natural gas development, but a desire to protect the Superfund remedy that is in place and operating effectively.”

Members of Save The Aurora Reservoir, which has been most vocal in opposition to the drilling project, say they are unconvinced the amended plan still doesn’t pose undo risk to local drinking water, air and other parts of the community.

Engineers say that because drilling and fracking would occur about 7,000 feet below the surface, groundwater and surface communities will be unaffected.

According to the state gas energy commission, the two closest residences to proposed wells are both located less than a mile away from proposed drilling and fracking sites. The closest residence would be 1,955 feet away, and the second closest residence is 2,705 feet away.

State officials say the owners and residents of those properties have already signed the informed consent letters.

Arapahoe County requires that the proposed well bores will be drilled more than a mile, below the surface and “staff does not expect any impacts to buildings located above the horizontal well bores.”

Last year, county commissioners were split on their support and opposition to the proposal.

Commissioner Bill Holen, who voted against the 2023 moratorium, said then he believed in the need for society to back away from its reliance on fossil fuels.

“But it cannot be accomplished overnight,” he said. “We cannot snap our fingers and all of the sudden everybody has some form of alternative energy. … We’re going to be dependent on gas and oil for the next couple of decades. It’s a reality.”

Among the many public speakers opposing the proj-

ect last week was Madhvi Chittoor, a 13-year-old girl and environmental activist. Chittoor said that she was at the meeting because her rights for “clean air, clean water…are at jeopardy,” and that she is speaking on behalf of other children who couldn’t be at the meeting.

“As our commissioners, you have the power to protect our basic wetlands, air, water and soil. So please exercise that power and support the people and not the oil and gas industry,” Chittoor said.

Aurora resident Hashim Coates, who is also campaigning to represent southeast Aurora as a county commissioner, also spoke against the project, raising concerns about how the development would affect the local wildlife.

Many parents whose children attend nearby schools, such as Altitude Elementary School and Pine Ridge Elementary School in the Cherry Creek School District, spoke about how the development would affect their children’s health. Some parents said that their children already suffer from asthma, and said that the development could make it worse.

Cherry Creek spokesperson Lauren Snell said that the district will “continue to monitor this project as it moves through the state and county approval process.” She added that the school district does not have any influence on this process.

Save the Aurora Reservoir members insist state and local officials turn back the project or at least require drilling and fracking occur farther from the reservoir and existing communities.

“We’re not billion-dollar people here,” Arapahoe County resident Molly Jacobs said to the commission, “Most of us probably aren’t millionaires. So it’s up to you to protect us.”

The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission will have another meeting on June 26 where they will take additional public comment.

Aurora Mental Health breaks ground on $38.4 million crisis and acute care center

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story discusses mental health care and suicide. If you or someone you know is in need of services, contact the Colorado Crisis Center at 844-492-8255 or text “TALK” to 38255. The national suicide hotline number is 988.

A wide range of political leaders representing Aurora led a groundbreaking ceremonyMonday for a new mental health facility in the city.

Dozens gathered on a sunny Monday morning as representatives from Aurora Mental Health and elected officials like Rep. Jason Crow, state Sen. Rhonda Fields and other local political leaders symbolically wore white hard hats and shoveled dirt. They celebrated the first step to bringing more mental health care to community members. Crow spoke about the importance of funding services like this, and how he was able to help get $3

million from the Congressional Appropriations Fund to help finance this project. Other funding sources include Arapahoe County, which committed $5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to support this project.

The total cost of the project was estimated at $38.4 million last year.

“There isn’t a family or a person in this group here that hasn’t been impacted by the mental health crisis,”

Crow said.“Mental health has been one of my top priorities in the last four years…I’m going to continue to funnel money towards mental health and towards public safety as much as I possibly can.”

“I don’t know about you, but I know a lot of people who are dealing with a lot of stuff. I just want to say, it’s

OK to ask for help,” she said.

According to data from KFF, in 2021 30% of Colorado adults reported feeling symptoms of anxiety or depression compared to the national average of 32%. Suicide rates in the country have also been increasing since 2011.

In 2021, for every 100,000 Colorado adults, 23 people would commit suicide. This is higher than the national average of 14. The rate of suicide deaths have increased among people of color, younger individuals and people who live in rural areas.

The plot of land for the new facility was purchased in the mid-2020, according to the press statement from Aurora Mental Health and Recovery. The new Crisis and Acute Care Center will be built on a seven acre property at 1290 S. Potomac Street, adjacent to the Medical Center of Aurora. It is slated to open in late 2025.

Aurora Mental Health’s objective is to create and provide a “one stop access” for mental health care, according to the press statement. The new facility will include a walk-in clinic, crisis stabilization unit and withdrawal management services.

Sampson takes over from former dean Dr. John J. Reilly Jr., who retired earlier.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Sampson to this vital role, and confident that he will lead with tremendous vision and purpose at a pivotal time in the history of the CU School of Medicine,” Donald Elliman, chancellor of CU Anschutz Medical Campus, said in a statement. “His record as a physician, scientist and champion of academic endeavors will lend itself to propelling our school and our campus into our next chapter of innovation and breakthrough.”

Sampson received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He also received his PhD from Duke University and an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine as well as the Association of American Physicians, according to the statement.

Sampson currently serves as the senior vice president of Duke University Health System and the Duke Health Integrated Practice. He is also a distinguished professor and researcher. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is also a professor of surgery, pathology, immunology and radiation oncology at Duke University Medical Center.

“It’s important to take possible exposure to rabies seriously, even if it doesn’t seem like a big deal,” Melissa Adair, Arapahoe County’s communicable disease epidemiology manager, said in the press statement.

“The other thing we often see is that people have really big hearts and want to help animals they worry may be sick, hurt or abandoned. Unfortunately, this rarely results in good outcomes for the animals, but instead puts humans and their pets at risk of illness,” Adair said. “We recommend putting distance between yourself and any animal that is acting strangely, then calling local animal control or the Colorado Department of Wildlife instead of intervening yourself.”

In a statement from the county, a bat found near East Quincy Avenue and South Sante Fe Drive in Englewood tested positive for the virus.

Two people were exposed to the bat and started preventative treatment, according to the press statement. The county recommends that humans and pets who have been exposed to bats, especially in this neighborhood, contact their health provider as well as Arapahoe County Public Health. They can be reached at 303734-4379.

This is the fourth incident of rabies reported in Colorado this year.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, there were 55 cases of rabies detected in Colorado wildlife in 2023. Of those, 43 cases were found in bats.

State data also shows that there was only one case of rabies detected in Arapahoe county last year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rabies is a fatal but preventable disease. It affects the central nervous system and causes brain disease and death if someone doesn’t receive medical care before symptoms start. While rabies in humans is rare, it is still considered a public health threat because of its high death rate.

Arapahoe County’s advice to prevent rabies are: vaccinate pets and

An additional $900,000 will go toward Aurora to relocate and improve water pressure regulating valves, which were first installed in the ‘50s and ‘60s, according to the city.

Crow secured more than $12.2 million of federal money to the state in congressional appropriation earmarks.

Local projects that also received procurement money this year include the Anschutz Medical Center’s Rural eConsult Expansion, a new STEM and Workforce Training and Education Space at the Community College of Aurora, and funding for a pedestrian-bicycle bridge over Parker Road near South Peoria Street.

He also procured money to help finance Aurora’s new acute mental health crisis center.

“This funding supports Colorado’s families, vulnerable communities, and new residents,” Crow said in a statement. “Together, we’re improving our library, delivering safe and accessible drinking water, uplifting our vulnerable and unhoused neighbors, and prioritizing our communities’ mental health.”

Centennial drug sting nets 41 pounds of meth, 33K fentanyl tablets and a suspect

An unidentified person faces numerous charges after a May 17 drugsting that netted tens of thousands of fentanyl tablets, more than 40 pounds of meth and more.

An undercover Arapahoe County sheriff investigator from the department’s Special Investigations Unit set up a sting to buy six pounds of methamphetamine from a dealer in Centennial. The dealer, whose identity was not released, has allegedly been selling drugs into Arapahoe County and into the city of Centennial, investigators said.

The undercover investigator met with the suspect at a motel on the 6700 block of South Galena Street.

The suspect arrived at around 5 p.m., according to sheriff officials, when the SWAT team conducted a vehicle takedown and arrested the suspect. A canine indicated the presence of drugs in the vehicle.

Law enforcement obtained a warrant and searched the vehicle, as well as the motel room where the suspect was staying. They seized:

• 41 pounds of methamphetamine

• 33,000 fentanyl pills

• 1.5 pounds of heroin

• 1 pound of cocaine

• A semi-automatic handgun

•$113,000 in cash

The suspect is in custody at the Arapahoe County Jail and faces multiple drug and weapon charges, according to officials. The suspect is also being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond.

County deputies shoot man, 46, accused of assaulting disabled female held hostage in community residence

A man investigators say physically beat a developmentally disabled female and held her against her will yesterday was shot while deputies tried to free her from her room in a community home east of Quincy Reservoir, according to Arapahoe County sheriff officials.

Coroner officials identified the man as Everett Duriel Shockley, 42.

The shooting incident began when deputies were called at about 3 p.m. May 18 about a woman being held at gunpoint inside a home in the 4500 block of Himalaya Circle.

“On arrival, deputies attempted to get the male suspect to exit peacefully and tried to contact him by phone and PA system with no response,” sheriff department spokesperson Ginger Delgado said in a statement. “It was determined he had barricaded himself and the female inside a bedroom.”

Officials described the residence as a “host home,” where the female lived. Officials did not release the victim’s age.

The suspect police said, was not a resident of the home.

“Deputies then made entry in an

attempt to rescue the female and confronted the armed male suspect physically restraining her at which time an officer involved shooting occurred,” Delgado said.

Officers attempted to revive Shockley, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“The female had been assaulted and sustained severe facial injuries,” Delgado said.”She was transported to a local hospital where she is still undergoing medical treatment.”

Coroner officials classified Shockley’s death as a homicide but not offer details of how or where he was shot.

“Multiple units from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene including patrol, traffic, SWAT, Crisis Negotiators, Drones, K9s and Investigations,” Delagado said.

As per state law, a critical incident response team, composed of 18th Judicial District investigators and outside police, convened for an investigation of the incident.

The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard police.

Detail about the tenure of the deputies involved was not released.

Aurora police say they’ve made an arrest in a two-year-old fatal shooting case that led them to a suspect already in a Denver jail.

Police tabbed Reh as a suspect after obtaining witness statements along with forensic and ballistic evidence, police said.

“Reh was already in custody at the Denver County Jail on an unrelated 2022 Denver homicide,” police said, when he was notified by Aurora police of potential charges in the Ryans case.

Man shot ‘several times’ identifies Aurora suspect, who now faces attempted murder charges

Police said they could not divulge

An unidentified man was shot “several times” May 18 but wasn’t mortally injured and identified a suspect in the shooting, who now faces attempted first-degree murder charges.

Police were called to the area near South Ironton Street and East Exposition Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. to

The incident began on the afternoon of May 30, 2022, when police were notified of a man lying in the alley between the 1600 block of Willow and Xanthia streets in Denver.

Denver police identified the man as Ryans, reporting he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

A few hours later, someone called Denver police to report possible trouble in a car near the intersection of East 14th Avenue and Niagara Street.

“When officers responded, they noticed multiple bullet holes in the vehicle and blood in the front passenger seat,” Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said in a statement. “Witnesses told officers they saw a woman exit the vehicle and enter a nearby motel.”

Denver police located the woman. She told investigators she had picked up Ryans in Aurora earlier and was en route to a local business as part of an errand.

“As they were driving away from the business, they encountered a white sedan driving slowly with its hazard lights on near East 16th Avenue and Alton Street,” police said. ”The woman attempted to drive around the sedan when an unknown man appeared and fired multiple rounds into the passenger side” of her car.

The woman said she sped away and pulled into an alley between Willow and Xanthia streets in Denver to check on Ryans.

“Ryans exited the (car) and collapsed on the ground,” Moylan said.

When police arrived, they found a 35-year-old Denver man suffering “multiple gunshot wounds,” police said in a statement.

“None were life-threatening,” police reported. “The man was able to provide a suspect description and tell officers where the suspect lived.”

Police went to an apartment in the 12700 block of East Exposition Avenue and contacted the suspect there.

Officers arrested the man, Rodney Youngblood, 51.

Youngblood is being held at the Arapahoe County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. His first court appearance is slated for May 23.

Right: Members of the Cher-

Trail boys track team run a victory lap at Jefferson County Stadium following the conclusion of the meet on May 18 after the Cougars scored 111 points to repeat as Class 5A state champions.

Middle: Junior Peyton Sommers used only the top step of the medal podium at the Class 5A boys state track meet as a three-event individual champion with another gold with the Colorado state record-setting 4x200 meter relay team.

Below: Cherokee Trail seniors were big contributors on the program’s run to a fourth all-time state title.

Without Peyton Sommers, the Cherokee Trail boys track & field team would have scored 74 points and comfortably won the Class 5A state championship.

But the Cougars do have Sommers — who coach Chris Faust calls “hands down, the best male track athlete in Colorado” — and that made them overwhelming and inevitable over three days at Jefferson County Stadium.

TRACK &

Sommers won the sprint triple crown in the 100, 200 and 400 meters May 18 and anchored a Colorado record-setting 4x200 meter relay team to help a deep Cherokee Trail team score 111 points, the most in the 5A boys meet in two decades.

relay, as he anchored the team of seniors Kahari Wilbon and Jayden Hughes plus junior Nick Hoffsetz to a record-setting victory.

The Cougars’ time of 1 minute, 24.93 seconds, set an all-classification state record (besting the 2013 mark of 1:25.46 from Valor Christian, which featured NFL star Christian McCaffrey) and the 5A state meet record (topping George Washington’s 1:25.59 from 2007) in the process.

On the final day of the meet, Sommers first claimed the 100 meters — in which he finished second in 2023 — with a time of 10.54 seconds, then took the 400 in 46.59 seconds and lastly ran 21.13 to claim the 200. At the end, he capped it off with credit to his teammates and the kind of culture the program has established.

“We are all equally hard working and we push each other to the point where we can win by double or triple the score of the next team,” Sommers said.

Pack points

“It’s way more than we thought; on paper, we were seeded to score 85 points, but the kids just kept outperforming what their seeds were,” said Faust, whose team finished with the highest point total since Smoky Hill dropped 126 in 2004.

“Peyton Sommers is the best track athlete we’ve ever had, but these boys would have won the state championship if he wasn’t on the team. It was incredible.

“These guys always put the team before the individual.”

Minus Sommers’ 40 points (10 for each event win), the Cougars would still have put up 71, which would have been 13 more than runner-up Mountain Vista, while Cherry Creek took third with 48.

Sommers for certain did a lot of heavy lifting in a performance that even eclipsed what he did as a sophomore, when he won three events.

Coming all the way back from a hamstring tweak early in the season, Sommers finished first every time he took the track, in prelims and finals. His first gold came May 17 in the 4x200 meter

The Cougars nearly ended the meet with another victory, but the 4x400 meter relay team of Wilbon, Hoffsetz, senior McKay Larsen and junior Kaelan Kombo lost by .002 of a second to late-charging Eaglecrest.

Cherokee Trail finished top seven in all four relay events, while Wilbon turned in top-five finishes in two events (second in the 400 and fifth in the 200), while senior Cayden Sweets (long jump) and junior Solomon Griffen (110 meter hurdles) had third-place finishes, junior pole vaulter Taylor Waters claimed fourth and Kombo fifth to highlight several individual point scorers.

“This was the best three days I think we’ve ever had at Cherokee Trail,” Wilbon said. “Our coach told us that each day got better than the last and really made us stronger on this last day. I’m so thankful for my teammates and my brothers.

“We always chase more than what we want. If you just want one thing and that’s what’s set in your mind, you can only achieve so much. But if you push past that threshold and become greater, there’s no limit. That’s what we did today.”

Eaglecrest and Overland finished fourth and fifth in the 5A boys standings with a combined four state championships.

Coach Chris Carhart’s Raptors finished the meet in style with two relay state titles on the final day, both of which were anchored by senior Peace Warah. First, he teamed with Eric Hill, Jeffery Poku and Noah Brown for a time of 41.86 seconds in the 4x100 meter relay, which he finished with his index finger to his mouth to signal silence. Warah’s biggest move came in the final race of the meet, the 4x400 meter relay, when he surged from third-place after the final curve and got his team — which also included Cam Chapa, Evan Keppy and Thierry Asare — a win by a mere 0.02 of a second over Cherokee Trail.

Brown, who ran at state instead of playing with the Eaglecrest baseball team at its Region 1 tournament, finished as the runner-up to Sommers in the 100 meter dash, while senior Jayden Diggins finished third in the high jump.

Overland had just three individual state qualifiers and two of them — senior Wondame Davis Jr. and junior Jarrius Ward — won state championships on the opening day of the state meet. Ward created buzz throughout the Jefferson County Stadium complex with his throw in the discus, which surpassed a 5A state meet record that had lasted for 47 years. Ward’s throw of 203 feet, 4 inches, in his prelim flight far bettered the 192-5 of Westminster’s Todd Austin back in 1977, while it fell short of the all-classification Colorado record of former Buena Vista star Mason Finley, who threw 214-1 in 2009. Ward finished second in the shot put.

Davis Jr., who arrived at the school from Texas at winter break, jumped 22 feet, 11 1/4 inches, to claim the long jump. Sophomore Zumari Stivers added fourth place in the 110-meter hurdles to complete a strong meet for the small Overland squad.

Rangeview’s Jaheim Alexander came an eyelash from a state championship of his own in the 110 hurdles. Alexander crossed the finish line with his arms raised as he believed he’d won, but Fountain-Fort Carson’s Kyler Lewis leaned at the finish line and ended up with the win by 0.003 of a second.

GRANDVIEW’S CUNNINGHAM FINISHES CAREER IN STYLE, RAPTORS TAKE TWO RELAYS

A stellar prep career for Grandview senior Gabriella Cunningham came to a conclusion on the final day of the Class 5A girls state track meet May 18 at Jefferson County Stadium, as she swept the 100 and 300 meter hurdles championships. It was the second year in a row that Cunningham had won both hurdles events and it gave the Louisiana State University recruit fife career state championships. In the 100 hurdles final, she shared the top of the podium with Cherokee Trail senior Sanaai Hancock (second) and junior Kaeli Powe (third). The medal podium also included

three other Aurora finals qualifiers in Grandview sophomore Sasha Kennedy (fifth), Smoky Hill sophomore Kiyah Enoch (sixth) and Smoky Hill senior Aniya Sigars (eighth).

Cunningham — who called it a “beautiful last high school season” — also finished in fourth place in the 100 meter dash.

The final day of the meet also saw the Eaglecrest team of sophomore Tatum Gratrix, senior Anaya Ewing, junior Jaylynn Wilson and freshman Zenobia Witt win the state title in the 4×100 meter relay to go with the crown they collected in the 4×200, which the Raptors ruled for a third straight season. Wilson, who had to recover from

a broken leg, has been on each of the three relay winners for Eaglecrest. Witt was fantastic in her state meet debut, as she finished as a three-event winner after she took the long jump on the opening day.

Witt’s last attempt in the event produced a jump of 19 feet, 9 1/2 inches, which pushed her past Powe and to the championship.

Those performances helped the Eaglecrest girls finish an Aurora-best fourth, just seven points ahead of Grandview. Powe was the only triple jumper to pass the 40-foot mark on her way to a state title and she finished on the medal podium four times in second (long jump), third (100 hurdles) and ninth (200 meters).

Audrey Whitmore admits she didn’t invest a lot of energy in golf in her freshman year at Regis Jesuit High School.

Now a junior, Whitmore’s dedication to the sport has grown by leaps and bounds, and it has taken her game to new levels.

In her third trip to the Class 5A girls golf state tournament, Whitmore surged all of the way up the leaderboard and earned herself a medal as a top-10 finisher at the end of two days of play at The Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.

Grandview senior Caroline Ryan was the most experienced of Aurora’s contingent of nine 5A state qualifiers, as she made it for a fourth time and posted her second straight top-20 finish in her final season.

The University of Wyoming signee had difficulty with Nos. 17 and 18 on both days and it brought her in with scores of 80 on the first day and 81 on the second day to put her 20th. Ryan’s career-best finish came as a junior when she tied for 17th, though her two-day total of 163 in that tournament was two strokes higher than this season.

Green finishes

“Freshman year, I wasn’t super committed. I was doing two varsity sports, but when sophomore year came around I really wanted to commit myself to golf, and I started to put in six hours a day,” Whitmore said.

“I’m feeling proud of how much I’ve improved. I’m feeling good about where my game is, and I only have up to go.”

As a freshman, she shot state rounds 97 and 87 to tie for 45th, which improved to rounds of 83 and 81 as a sophomore that put her 18th.

Even though is seemed like hardly any putts fell this season, Whitmore said her pre-shot routine made a big difference, and it helped her card rounds of 75 and 77 to tie with Bella Eide of 5A team champion Valor Christian in eighth place.

“Audrey basically started three years ago, and she was just playing (low-level) golf,” Regis Jesuit coach Charlie Rutenbeck said. “To go from basically shooting 90 to 80 to 75 in two-and-a-half years, that’s phenomenal.”

Whitmore could battle for an even higher place next year, but she’ll face the same competition, as none of the players who finished in the top 10 will graduate.

The only team score for an Aurora program came from Regis Jesuit, which had Whitmore and junior Paige Furgason back with state experience in addition to newcomers in sophomore Natalie Furgason and freshman Molly Amann.

The Raiders had hopes of a top-10 team finish, but put themselves in a difficult position with a tough first round. They collectively improved by 12 strokes in the second round to finish 11th, four strokes ahead of 12th-place Brighton.

Natalie Furgason showed a six-stroke improvement between rounds and finished in a tie for 57th, while Paige Furgason and Amann were eight and seven strokes, respectively, better in the second round as they placed 63rd and 64th.

Grandview had potential for a team score when senior Ella Wheeler and sophomore Jean Lim were late adds to the tournament, but only Ryan and Lim completed the tournament.

Lim shot rounds of 92 and 91 to finish 52nd for coach Kurtis Bailey’s Wolves, who did not get a team score as Wheeler withdrew after the first round, in which she shot 109.

Cherokee Trail graduated one of state qualifiers (Bead Boonta) from a season ago, and another (Kaleigh Babineaux) moved out of state, which changed the look of the team.

Freshmen Brinnon Cook and Kaylee Saul qualified for coach Justin Jajczyk’s team and finished within a stroke of each other. Cook’s best round came in the first round (a 97) and Saul’s came in the second (a 93), as they finished 65th and 66th, respectively.

VISTA PEAK PREP’S CAPUA FINISHES IN 26TH PLACE AT 4A STATE TOURNAMENT

For the second straight season, Vista PEAK Prep sophomore Sophia Capua played in the Class 4A girls golf state tournament, which concluded May 21 at the Country Club of Colorado. Capua tied for ninth place as a freshman but found the tournament more challenging this time and finished tied for 26th. She shot 89 in the first round and followed that with a 93 in the second round, which she ended with a birdie.

GATEWAY’S MADDIE DOSSEY PLAYS ONE ROUND AT 3A STATE TOURNAMENT

Senior Maddie Dossey — Gateway’s first girls golf state qualifier since 2014 — played one round of the Class 3A tournament on May 20, before she withdrew from the final round. Dossey shot 122 in the opening round at The Olde Course in Loveland, but she could not complete the tournament due to Gateway’s graduation ceremony May 21.

BASEBALL 5A Championship Series includes Cougars, Wolves and Raiders

Eight teams qualified for the Class 5A Baseball Championship Series — which opens May 24-25 — and three of them hail from Aurora.

An upset-filled set of regional tournaments saw 16th-seeded Grandview and 11th-seeded Cherokee Trail come out of tournaments in which they were a lower seed, while second-seeded Regis Jesuit was one of just four host teams to survive and advance.

With the seedings going straight into the 5A Championship Series bracket, the Aurora teams ended up in three of the four opening round games May 24. The Cougars — last season’s 5A runner-up — play at All-City Stadium at 9:30 a.m. against Horizon (the No. 19 seed), while the Raiders will follow at the same venue with a noon contest against No. 7 Fort Collins. Also at noon — but at All-Star Park in Lakewood — will be the Wolves, who will face No. 8 Prairie View.

Winners advance to 2:30 p.m. contests, while the losers remain alive but move into the elimination bracket with contests beginning May 25. Second round winners play at 2:30 p.m. The Championship Series concludes May 31-June 1.

Coach Matt Darr’s Raiders come into the Championship Series after a strong Region 2 tournament in which they defeated No. 31 Loveland 6-3 and No. 18 Ponderosa 12-6. Senior Liam Mosley continued his undefeated season with a complete game effort against Loveland that moved him to 7-0 on the season, while he was supported by an offense that got two RBI from junior Nick Wiley, while senior Trevor Nordstrom and sophomore Hudson Alpert also plated runs.

Coach Jon DiGiorgio’s Cougars took the Championship Series spot out of the Region 6 tournament hosted by Rock Canyon, which like Cherokee Trail was a Championship Series qualifier last season. But the host Jaguars were knocked out by No. 27 Brighton in the first contest, which left the Cougars (who downed No. 22 Rampart 8-2) to face the Bulldogs. In a well-pitched contest, Cherokee Trail claimed a 2-1 victory on a walk-off base hit by senior Jack Boyko.

Coach Scott Henry’s Grandview team — which missed out on the Championship Series last season — played a 14-inning marathon against 17th-seeded Ralston Valley and prevailed 5-4 on a base hit from senior Collin May. Junior Chase Chapman drove in three runs and senior Brock Johnston had the other RBI for the Wolves, while Jax Pfister earned the win with 7 2/3 innings of relief. With pitching stretched thin, junior Nick Martensen stepped up in a matchup with No. 32 Eaglecrest and threw a complete game in a 6-2 victory. Grandview staked Martensen to a four-run lead after one inning andJohnston, May and senior Easton Flores picked up RBI in the victory.

BASEBALL No. 32 Eaglecrest takes down No. 1 Fossil Ridge but can’t take Region 1

Eaglecrest coach Tory Humphrey knew his team would be a handful for a higher seed if it got into the Class 5A regional postseason, and he sure was right.

The Raptors came through with some clutch performances in the final games of the season to get into the playoffs as the No. 32 seed and promptly pulled off the upset of the round with a 5-1 win at No. 1 Fossil Ridge May 18.

Junior starting pitcher Cosme Vera gave Eaglecrest 6 2/3 strong innings, as he allowed an unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts while sophomore Landen Holmes recorded the final out. The Raptors

took advantage of three SaberCats’ errors, while seniors Brayden Stufft and Jose Hernandez Jr. had RBI.

Senior John Rossi and juniors Tavish Dey, Kayden Williams-Carpenter and Braden Elliott had two hits apiece.

Eaglecrest’s season came to an end in the next game, however, as it fell to No. 16 Grandview 6-2 in the Region 1 championship game.

BOYS LACROSSE Regis Jesuit run ends in 5A semifinals in 13-3 loss to Valor Christian

The Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team came off a victory over second-seeded Cherry Creek in the Class 5A state quarterfinals, but the seventh-seeded Raiders couldn’t get past No. 3 Valor Christian in a semifinals May 18 at Peter Barton Stadium on the campus of the University of Denver.

Senior Dylan Kummer scored three goals for Regis Jesuit in a 13-3

loss to the Eagles, who went on to win the state championship with a 22-6 win over No. 1 Arapahoe May 20.

To get into the final four, coach Ross Moscatelli’s Raiders — who finished the season 11-7 — pulled off a 5-3 upset of Cherry Creek May 15, which came less than two weeks after a 10-6 loss to the Bruins in the regular season. Regis Jesuit trailed by 3-2 at halftime before a lengthy delay due to lightning and a deluge, but scored the only three goals of the second half when play resumed. Junior Ben Stone notched the game-tying goal, Kummer broke the tie with his second goal of the game, and Austin Ryan added an insurance score in the closing minutes.

Matthew Crabb was still a teenager when he got behind the controls of a plane for the first time. Having spent his childhood around U.S. military pilots, Crabb said learning to fly felt “normal,” like an airplane’s cockpit was where he was supposed to be.

“I was so used to seeing a flight suit around the house as an elementary-aged kid,” he said. “I begged, and begged, and begged my dad to be able to take flight instruction.”

Crabb’s grandfather served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. His father flew a C-130 in Vietnam. In grade school, Crabb reeled off “Top Gun” quotes and trick-or-treated as a fighter pilot.

He didn’t hit his stride academically until the end of college, as he closed in on his goal of receiving a bachelor’s degree, so he could enter the Air Force as an officer, so he could fly a jet.

Seated by a window in his office at Buckley Space Force Base, overlooking the base’s flightline and a handful of F-16s, Crabb tried to describe the rush he still feels when launching into the sky in one of the high-performance planes.

“The fact that I can go from 5,000 feet in elevation, roughly, to 24,000 feet in less than a minute, at 90 degrees, nose-high? There’s nothing that feels like that, nothing that I’ve experienced in my normal day-to-day where you can have that freedom,” he said. “It’s indescribable. Or, it’s describable, but it’s hard to comprehend unless you’ve experienced it.”

Now a lieutenant colonel, Crabb commands the aircraft maintenance squadron of the Colorado Air

National Guard 140th Wing. The squadron helps ensure the wing’s 18 Fighting Falcon jets are airworthy, including those assigned to the base’s Aerospace Control Alert Mission, which are kept ready to launch at all times to intercept threats to the continental United States.

Crabb said leading the squadron has made him a more well-rounded officer. After spending the first decade of his career as an active-duty combat pilot, helping the 220 people under his command succeed has been rewarding in ways he never expected.

The job has been a source of stability for Crabb, who lives with his wife and two sons in the flight path of the base. It also gives him the opportunity to continue to perfect his flying skills. As an instructor pilot, he leads many of the training missions that pass over Aurora, sharing with others the passion and obsession that has guided the course of his life.

“I still get a little ornery when I don’t fly,” he said. “That’s every pilot. They get the itch. Like, ‘I need to go fly.’”

High hopes

As the child of a U.S. military pilot, even from a young age, Crabb said he had an idea of the path he would need to take to follow in his father’s footsteps, starting with a college education.

The Air Force selects aspiring fighter pilots from among its officers. In order to become an officer, candidates must first receive their college degree. However, Crabb said he struggled to get good

grades in middle and high school.

“My mom likes to say that school didn’t challenge me enough, and I was bored with it,” Crabb said, adding that she was “probably (being) generous.”

Still, determined to chase his dream of becoming a fighter pilot, Crabb enrolled at Northern Arizona University and signed up for the school’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

On May 15, 2005, he received his degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. A few weeks later, he shipped out to Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.

Crabb said he didn’t have trouble adjusting to life as an Air Force officer, which he credited to the structured upbringing that his parents provided. His brother also went on to become an F-16 pilot, and the two shared a flight instructor as adolescents.

Regardless of whether a new Air Force pilot has experience flying civilian aircraft, Crabb said one of the goals of the training process is to indoctrinate officers into the branch’s own philosophy of flying.

Pilots were expected to memorize lists of steps to take in critical situations, such as if the engine of their plane failed mid-flight or if they had to abort a takeoff. If a pilot couldn’t remember those steps when quizzed by an instructor, they would be grounded for the day.

“It sounds strict, but it serves a very valuable purpose,” Crabb said. “I think that general mentality has carried on throughout every phase of flying to this day, to the point where you have 25-year-olds in charge of

Crabb said. “Every flight is that level of intensity. Maybe not from an operational standpoint — I may not be actively dropping bombs that day — but every single flight has the potential. And your level of effort is the playoffs if not the championship game every time.”

The average sortie lasted about five hours, and Crabb flew mostly at night. He described the cockpit of the F-16 — just large enough to accommodate a single person and their gear — as an environment stripped of distractions, designed to promote vigilance among pilots — armed to the teeth, flying at several hundred miles per hour, tens of thousands of feet above the ground.

Back on base, life was oriented around the mission that had brought Crabb and other airmen to the frontlines of America’s engagement in the Middle East. When he wasn’t flying, Crabb wished he was, and the lack of amusements on base only made him more eager to get back in the air, which he said was fulfilling as well as taxing.

“You can have a day where you go up, and nothing happens the whole night, and you’re just flying in circles. Or you can go up, and you can have some pretty terrifying moments where your brain is working overtime for a long period of time,” he said.

“If you go more than about two days, non-flying, you start to get a little stir crazy, because you’re in a combat zone. There’s not much to do. There’s no going to the movies or hitting up Dairy Queen. You’re kind of stuck between your work center and your bed.”

To pass the time, he and other airmen played cards, talked about their lives stateside and bonded over their shared predicament. Crabb was a one member of a squadron of pilots at a time when tens of thousands of U.S. troops were deployed in the Middle East.

While the missions he flew were part of a larger, coordinated war effort, he said the drive to tighten up his skills and continue improving came largely from within.

“You absolutely want to put every ounce of your life into this thing, because you’re trying to reach the pinnacle,” he said. “Like, I want to be the best that I can be. I want to get to that point where I’m comfortable in the airplane, and I can do almost anything. And I think, naturally, for the first 10 years, that’s what you’re trying to do.”

Over the course of his career, Crabb has clocked more than 1,000 combat hours aloft, putting him in the top 12% of Air Force pilots in terms of combat flight experience, according to a U.S. Air Force spokesperson.

Toward the end of his 11-year stint as an active-duty airman, Crabb was promoted to the rank of major, and the trajectory of his career began pointing away from the cockpit. He also wasn’t immune to the stress and upheaval of active-duty military life.

“If you were to boil all of it down into one word, it would just be ‘stability.’ I was looking for some more stability in my life,” he said. “And I wanted to keep flying. I knew if I trained under the Guard, ultimately, I would continue to fly the jet.”

Joining Aurora’s hometown fighter jet wing

In 2016, Crabb transitioned into the Colorado Air National Guard and arrived at Buckley to start a new job as a weapons officer.

The 38 pilots of Aurora’s Colorado Air National Guard wing together bring more than 10,000 hours of flight time both in and out of combat to their jobs. The wing provides air support inside of the U.S. through the Aerospace Control Alert Mission as well as overseas and in space.

It also offers a pathway for people interested in a career as a fighter pilot to acquaint themselves with military aircraft while earning their college degree and preparing to become an officer. Crabb said several of the fighter pilots at Buckley got their start in the 140th Wing.

He described his leadership of the aircraft maintenance squadron as the best of both worlds.

“I’m loving it. It’s nice taking care of people, switching hats,” he said. “My whole career — it’s going to sound weird, because we’re a team — but the majority of the time, I was focused on a lot of myself. Like, do I

have the knowledge? Do I have the skills? You know, bettering those aspects of myself.”

As an instructor pilot, he continues to fly F-16s, evaluating and grading the performance of pilots during training missions. He’s also deployed twice since coming to Buckley — in 2019, to Afghanistan, and in 2022, to Saudi Arabia, supporting operations in Iraq and Syria.

Regardless, Crabb said his time at Buckley has brought stability in more ways than one. Around the time he left active duty for the Guard, he reunited with a former high school classmate. They started dating and were married in 2021.

When asked how he would feel if either of his sons wanted to take to the skies like their father, uncle and grandfather, Crabb said he’d be supportive, though he said he’s not trying to push them into a military aviation career.

“Although I have had an incredible experience in the path that I have chosen, there is zero pressure for my kids to follow in my footsteps,” he said. “I support my kids in whatever task they end up pursuing.”

At 41 years old, Crabb has started thinking about what it might look like for him to retire from the military. He said he’s eyeing a second life as a commercial airline pilot.

“The passion will always be there,” he said. “I don’t think that will ever go away.”

The Addai-Opoku family made a profound statement at Hinkley High School’s graduation ceremony — in triplicate.

Among the 2024 cohort of graduates last week were Mariah, Samuel and Mercy Addai-Opoku.

Born and raised in Colorado, the triplets have attended Aurora Public Schools since they were little. They started their high school years during the pandemic, when classes were held online.

Mariah said that they were ranked in the top 20 of their class when they were freshmen, and their parents encouraged them to keep climbing.

After years of participating in sports and working through honors and concurrent classes, the triplets finished in the top 10 of their graduating class.

LIFE IN AURORA

the vice president of the student government in his senior year, a goal he achieved.

“Thank you for being a role model,” Samuel said about Williams. “He was there to support me, whether it was academically or sports. And I think without him, I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now.”

Mariah thanked theater teacher Kristen Martin, whom she affectionately called “Miss KMart.”

“She’s always pushed us to get better in our craft,” Mariah said. “I really do appreciate everything that she does for us.”

The triplets donned their blue caps and gowns while displaying their bright colored stoles and cords of distinction during their high school graduation last week.

But it wasn’t the first time they walked across the stage in caps and gowns.

Three of a kind

Earlier this month, the triplets also received their associate degrees from the Community College of Aurora. Mariah and Mercy received an associate of arts degree while Samuel obtained an associate of science degree.

Mariah is ranked at number seven, Mercy is ranked number nine and Samuel is ranked number 10. Samuel, the second-oldest triplet, attributed his “middle-child” academic success to his time management skills, balancing his days and nights between studying and participating in sports. Mariah and Mercy played volleyball while Samuel played soccer. Mercy added that perseverance and never giving up is important.

“I think that’s something we all learned on our own,” Mariah, the oldest of the triplets, said. “We know that if you want to make things happen, we are the ones that have to be responsible and accountable for our actions.”

When asked about the teachers and staff at Hinkley High School who helped them the most, Mercy, the baby of the siblings, all born on the same day, thanked the athletic trainer Adiana Trost, whom she affectionately called “Miss Ana.” Mercy said that she liked how she “takes the time to actually get to know us.”

Mercy thanked Trost for being supportive and reliable.

Samuel thanked “Mr. Williams,” the head of security. Samuel said that Williams encouraged him to become

Children of Ghana immigrants, the triplets are the first in their families to obtain a college degree.

And now, they’re working for multiple degrees already.

This fall, Mariah and Mercy will be attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Maria wants to pursue degrees in theater and psychology. Mercy wants to study interior design and architecture.

Samuel will be attending the University of Colorado in Boulder and plans on studying aerospace engineering. He earned a scholarship from the Sachs Foundation, which will provide $10,000 every year for four years.

All three also earned scholarships from Gear Up, which Mariah said helps students take initiative in their education. They will get $4,000 over the course of four years.

Their parents are staying in Aurora, and they’re going from a full-to-empty nest.

“[Our parents] are definitely excited that we’re onto the next chapter,” Mariah said. “But at the same time, they’re not losing one child. It’s all three of us at the same time so I definitely think that they are a little sad.”

But the triplets said their campuses are not too far away, so they will still hang out.

Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure | In Place

Fazal Sheikh: Thirst | Exposure | In Place is an exhibition created from three projects photographer Fazal Sheikh made on the Colorado Plateau from 2017 to early 2023. Sheikh’s portraits and landscapes shed light on the far-reaching consequences of extractive industry and climate change.

The exhibition presents Sheikh’s recent work in three interrelated sections: Thirst is a new series of aerial photographs that document the decline of the Great Salt Lake in northeast Utah, which is shrinking due to overconsumption and dwindling rain and snowfall. Exposure examines the impacts of uranium, coal, oil and natural-gas extraction on the American Southwest and on its Indigenous inhabitants. In Place evokes the enduring landscapes of

the Bears Ears region in Utah, bringing Sheikh’s photographs together with contributions from scientists and Indigenous communities in and around Bears Ears in southeastern Utah.

Visitors will reflect upon the transformation—and often devastation—of these landscapes in the context of the past, present and future, while considering the juxtaposition of beauty and catastrophe, as well as intimate, human-scale stories and those spanning vast geological eras and changes.
