Facts matter as the election nears, but the facts about journalism will matter more
DAVE PERRY EditorThe feeling here in the newsroom these days is dizzying, like being trapped in a ferociously obnoxious car wash. But rather than the uncomfortable feeling you get sometimes as you’re strapped into your seat and subjected to fire-hose water blasts, gunky soap and inside-of-a-wall stringy scrubbers, we’re being subjected to Election 2024. It’s as surreal as the first time in a jungle wash.
Today, a porn actress testified in a New York courtroom about her affair with Donald Trump back in 2006. Prosecutors in the criminal case have been outlining how Trump illegally used his presidential campaign funds as hush money in 2016 to try and squelch the story.
Trump is near being jailed for being unable to refrain himself from threatening and intimidating witnesses and others in the case, a culmination of decades of saying he’s done nothing wrong, and his woes are all the result of “fake news” or “weaponized” justice or just plain unfairness.
And even though this is Trump’s first foray into a criminal court, among dozens and dozens of criminal charges he faces in numerous criminal cases, he insists that he never committed any of the plethora of criminal acts he’s accused of, or that he can’t be held accountable because he used to be the president.
Beyond the press religiously relaying all of the astonishingly racist, alarming, inaccurate, misleading things and lies he’s uttered or posted since he began running for president, the video proof and his own social media accounts are the indisputable record of everything he’s ever produced.
Here’s where the fire-hose of hot water suddenly erupts onto the side window next to your head. Despite all this and
much more, he is the near-certain Republican Party nominee for U.S. president.
How is this not a hallucination or a fever dream?
The inarticulate and clearly dozy man — who roused a gang of goons to storm the U.S. Capitol in hopes of preventing the peaceful transfer of power to the guy who provably won the 2020 election — is who holds the hope for a better life for the nation’s Republicans? The party of the rule of law and crime-gets-you punishment?
Here comes a blast of some filmy, slimy goo all over the front of your car.
A poll this week from The American Press Institute, and the Associated Press, revealed that 53% of Americans say “they are extremely or very concerned that news organizations will report inaccuracies or misinformation during the election.”
About half of all Americans say they ”worry that news outlets will use generative artificial intelligence to create stories.”
But wait. There’s more.
A stunning 47% of Americans are deeply concerned that the media will report information that “has not been confirmed or verified.”
And, it gets even worse.
About half of people under 30 get their election information and news from social media, or friends.
“Black and Latino adults are somewhat more likely to express ‘a great deal’ of confidence in the reliability of social media as a source of election news than white Americans are,” the AP reported from the poll results.
It’s pretty easy to see the connection between how Trump has survived politically and how the news industry is not.
Local news sources fare far better than national outlets when it comes to earning
trust among readers. But that doesn’t explain how Colorado politicians like Congressperson Lauren Boebert, who is a virtual train wreck of ethics, logic and just plain common sense. The same for Colorado Republican Chairperson Dave Williams, who, after being outed by one of the state’s most trusted journalists from spending state GOP money on his own shifty campaign for Congress, tossed her from a state party event and dubbed her the worst of “fake news.” Even some of the most ardent “party first” Colorado Republicans have dubbed him anathema to Republican Party goals and philosophy — yet he prevails.
This is where the car wash conveyor suddenly halts and you wonder if you’re just going to spend eternity covered in slimy soap.
No doubt that the Sentinel, and all of the media in Colorado, and across the nation, need to do more to help educate the public about how journalism works. We must communicate how news is vetted and inspected by the public every day for accuracy and fairness.
But those who understand how critical American journalism is need to do more to support it. The other half of the nation must take the time to ensure that friends and family understand that they trust it, and believe it.
TikTok influencers are not journalists, and 10 video seconds poking fun at Trump’s orange face or cartoon hair is not journalism.
And if a majority of Americans believe people like Trump over the Denver Post, the Colorado Springs Gazette or the Sentinel, we’re going to be stuck in this nightmare forever.

US immigration reform is about jobs, not fear
The immigration crisis roiling at the nation’s southern border, and right here in the metro area, can be resolved — if Americans stand behind leaders who want change, not chaos.
U.S. immigration policy stands out as one of the nation’s most catastrophic and humiliating failures by Republicans and Democrats alike. Then, already-useless immigration policy fermented by the Obama Administration was weaponized during the Trump presidential campaign and his dismal term in office.
It has fermented into a deadly brew under the Biden Administration.
Vastly expensive and wasteful remnants of Trump’s notorious “great wall” along segments of the southern border stand as testament to Trump’s insidious exploitation of some Americans’ fear or disdain for immigrants, and especially immigrants who are people of color.
The fear is back. Without the ability to control who moves across the U.S. border, nearly anyone can, and without real consequences.
That allows not only for unregulated emigration of tragic, desperate refugees, but drug cartels and other human trafficking criminals as well.
Among the most insidious of these traffickers are Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other southern state officials who kidnap or bribe immigrants and force them to cities like Chicago, New York and Denver.
Without a federal ability to quickly and legally provide temporary worker permits, these desperate and hopeful immigrants become expensive wards of the city, the region, and, rarely, the state. The federal government, even under the Biden Administration, has left Denver and its neighboring cities to fend for themselves to provide for upwards of 40,000 refugees in the last 18 months.
Even though Congress and the federal government have created this crisis, they’re willing to saddle local municipalities and taxpayers with the mounting burden.
Republicans and Democrats must end the cruelty, the inhumanity and the vast lost opportunities for immigrants and the nation alike. They must work together to finally solve this problem, of which illegal immigration is but a symptom: jobs.
Endless U.S. industries and businesses depend on the cheap labor that illegal immigrants provide. Until that issue is addressed, nothing will change. That need for labor is as strong now in the metro area as it was a year ago or more.
For decades, the problem of illegal immigration has been primarily about jobs, and presidential Donald Trump and his acolytes have worked hard to distract from that. Despite all the heated rhetoric and emotional arguments targeting both sides of this thorny issue, there is a growing cadre of inconvenient facts we’ve highlighted repeatedly:
• There are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States, and their stories and circumstances are astoundingly varied. Officials estimate greater Aurora is home to about 130,000 illegal immigrants.
• Many of these immigrants are settled and integrated into our communities. They have jobs. They own cars and homes. They make more than $60 billion a year from U.S. businesses. They have children in schools. They spend vast sums of money in the community.
• They are our friends, neighbors and a daily part of our lives, distinguishable from the 40 million Americans not born in the United States only by their lack of documentation.
• Business groups and more than a few industries haven’t been shy in making it clear that these immigrants are critical to their operations. Many metro businesses can’t currently find adequate numbers of employees, even with illegal immigrants backfilling the workforce. Removing these people from the workforce would be disastrous to the U.S. economy.
• Deporting illegal immigrants is far from a simple matter. Many families consist of citizens and non-citizens, many with varying degrees of legality. Tearing apart families will only lead to tragedy and increased government expense.
• The cost of rounding up, collecting from holding cells, housing, processing and deporting millions of immigrants would be astronomical. Even proponents admit that.
The answer isn’t disinformation, deportations or a wall, it’s employment. The nation needs a vastly changed immigration system that offers worker permits. It must include heavy penalties for businesses that employee undocumented workers. It must be a system that allows immigrants to work here legally without having to be citizens. It must be a program that allows for accomplishing citizenship for those who play by rules.
The only answer is comprehensive immigration reform that continues America’s lauded policy of open arms, transparency and accountability.
Did we learn anything from COVID?
The lockdowns instituted during the COVID pandemic were only supposed to last a few days. Remember, “14 days to flatten the curve” was all that was needed to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed by patients infected with the rapidly spreading novel coronavirus.
Two weeks turned into three, then months. The impact was felt across the nation. Schools were closed, disrupting the education of millions of children. Businesses were shut down, leading to job losses and economic hardship. States like California and Kentucky enforced the lockdowns with ruthless efficiency. The free exercise of worship and assembly was crushed on the altar of public health and safety. Commercial activity in the world’s most powerful nation ground almost to a halt, but the virus kept killing, mutating, and spreading.
Was it worth it? A new report from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, authored by experts including the Hoover Institution’s Scott Atlas, who served as an advisor to the White House Coronavirus Task Force, and economists Steve Hanke from Johns Hopkins University and Casey Mulligan from the University of Chicago, concludes that the lockdowns cost more lives than they saved.
“The ordered shutdown of our schools, churches, and businesses brought little health benefits while imposing multi-trillions of dollars of long-term societal costs,” says the report.
“We did not focus on theories or models. We looked at cold, hard facts,” says Phil Kerpen, president of the Committee to Unleash Prosperity and the report’s final co-author. “The evidence is overwhelming. Lockdowns, school closures, and societal panic/disruption resulted in a staggering number of excess non-COVID deaths in the United States versus zero in non-lockdown Sweden.”
Kerpen estimates policies implemented during the lockdowns saved less than 16,000 lives while causing about 400,000 extra deaths and imposing other costs that are staggering, including the loss of 49 million jobs, hundreds of thousands of business bankruptcies, and hundreds of thousands of excess deaths from loneliness, depression, alcoholism, drug abuse, and delayed hospital care.
Catastrophes like these are usually studied by bipartisan, blue-ribbon commissions that issue recommendations to prevent things from happening again. Not in this case, one might suspect, because the policymakers
who originated and enforced the lockdowns are still in a position to keep people in the dark.
Even in China, where popular opinion doesn’t matter, the investigation into the virus’s origins hit a brick wall thanks to what news reports have called “bureaucratic infighting.”
Too many people have been left with the impression the lockdowns worked. The Committee to Unleash Prosperity report shows that’s the wrong lesson. We need to look harder, no matter how uncomfortable that might be. The public’s health and safety and the exercise of our civil liberties are at stake.
There are a few “lessons learned” in the report that should inform policymakers’ decision-making in the next crisis, among them: “Leaders should calm public fears, not stoke them.” During the pandemic, the authors of the report say, responsible officials in the public eye “intentionally stoked and amplified fear, which overlaid enormous economic, social, educational, and health harms on top of the harms of the virus itself.”
Indeed, the crisis was wielded as a cudgel by some public health officials, the media, and policymakers. They seemed more interested in stopping the re-election of a president than in arresting the spread of the novel coronavirus. And if they did indeed deliberately ignore proven pandemic countermeasures and sound science in furtherance of a partisan political agenda, the public has the right to know.
There’s more to be studied. No nation that used lockdowns to prevent COVID from spreading can claim success. “The best-performing major country in the world was Sweden,” Kerpen says, “which did not employ mandatory lockdowns. Yet, to the extent that official and unofficial commissions in many countries have issued reports, they say the principal lesson to be learned from the pandemic is to lockdown harder and faster. The evidence doesn’t support that. It tells us that the lockdown policies must never be imposed again.”
If Kerpen is correct, and the evidence suggests he is, then policymakers are drawing the wrong conclusions. Lockdowns were a failure, not a success. Further investigation is called for.

Aurora lawmaker makes unspecified allegation that 4 cops, chief pose ‘threat’ to victims
CITY OF AURORA: ‘WE ARE VERY LIMITED IN WHAT WE CAN PROVIDE AT THIS TIME’
Aurora City Council member Danielle Jurinsky publicly denounced the city’s interim police chief May 6 for what she described as a failure to help crime victims, demanding city leadership cooperate in pushing the chief and four other cops out of the department.

Danielle Jurinsky points at and scolds City Manager
Jason Batchelor during the council’s May 6 meeting as she demands interim police chief Heather Morris’ and four other officers’ separation from the department. Jurinsky offered no specifics regarding her claim that they had mistreated “victims.”
SENTINEL SCREEN GRAB
“These five officers do not belong in this department,” Jurinsky said toward the end of the council meeting, broadcast on the city’s cable television channel. “They are a threat to this city — to victims, and probably to suspects as well, but certainly to victims.”
Jurinsky did not explain why she is seeking the resignations of Aurora Police Department interim chief Heather Morris, Investigations Division chief Mark Hildebrand and officers Tim Meehan, Brian O’Dell and Seth Robertson, beyond blaming the poor treatment of victims on police leadership.
A few weeks earlier, the lawmaker announced in a social media post that she had been the victim of a recent domestic violence incident. A criminal complaint associated with the incident states it was handled by Aurora police.
On May 7, city spokesman Ryan Luby released a statement on behalf of the administration of the city and police department, saying Jurinsky’s comments “might be related to a domestic situation and an investigation that remains active and ongoing.”
“We are very limited in what we can provide at this time,” Luby said, referencing the fact that the affidavit in the case is not publicly available.
“Interim Chief Heather R. Morris extends her deepest compassion and empathy to all crime victims,” Luby added. “It is the role of a police officer to pursue the justice and safety they deserve, and she appreciates officers’ work in this matter.”
When a Sentinel reporter approached Jurinsky after Monday’s meeting to ask about her comments, she said, “I’ve got nothing for you,” and walked away. During the meeting, she said that she is planning a news conference and a lawsuit but did not say when.
Jurinsky also accused City Manager Jason Batchelor of “direct incompetence” for the fact that he oversaw the department at the time the alleged conduct by police took place.
She alluded to “someone waiting just around the corner to come out” if Batchelor did not act on her concerns and warned him that, as long as the five officers remain employed by the department, she was “not going to let this issue go.”
“I’m only going to get louder,” she said while addressing Batchelor. “You will not ignore the situation. You will deal with the situation.”
As city manager, Batchelor alone has the power to dismiss the chief of police.
Jurinsky is an influential voice within the council’s conservative majority, sponsoring many of its signature criminal justice policies and
chairing the council’s public safety policy committee. She has been vocal in her support for Aurora police officers and on Monday told rankand-file police officers that she would “always stand with you.”
She also has a history of clashing publicly with the leadership of the police department. In January 2022, Jurinsky called then-chief Vanessa Wilson “trash” on a talk radio show and said she had asked Wilson to replace the deputy chief. Wilson was fired a few months later.
The ex-chief has since sued the city for wrongful termination, accusing Jurinsky and other council conservatives of pressuring former city manager Jim Twombly to oust her as punishment for holding police officers accountable for misconduct.
The lawsuit does not offer details of the alleged conspiracy to fire Wilson, and city officials have repeatedly said the decision was not the result of political pressure but instead a response to Wilson struggling to manage the department and rebuild officer morale.
Morris is the third consecutive police chief to have been appointed on an interim basis since Wilson’s removal from the permanent chief position.
The city has released limited information about the timeline for selecting a long-term leader of its police department, with Batchelor saying in April that a choice will be made “in the next several months.”

The Colorado House passed the ban earlier this year in a historic first, after roughly the same proposal was swiftly nixed last year. But some Senate Democrats are wary of the efficacy and breadth of the ban, which prohibits the sale, transfer and manufacture of semiautomatic firearms.
Colorado’s blue shift is evident in part by a number of successful gun control measures passed last year, including raising the buying age for a gun from 18 to 21. Some half-dozen proposals are nearing passage this year, including a bill to put a measure on the November 2024 ballot to tax sales of guns and ammunition.
The state’s purple roots have frustrated attempts at a broader ban.
In the face of Senate Democrats’ opposition, one of the bill’s sponsors asked that the legislation be put to rest at a brief and sparsely attended committee hearing Tuesday.
“After thoughtful conversations with my Senate colleagues, I decided that more conversations need to take place outside of the pressure cooker of the Capitol,” sponsor Democratic state Sen. Julie Gonzales said.
Gonzales said she’ll continue discussions with gun violence victims, responsible gun owners and advocates “committed to doing the work necessary to save lives — and an assault weapons ban will do just that.”
On that committee sat Democratic state Sen. Tom Sullivan, who would have been a “no” vote, along with Republican lawmakers who have decried the bill as an encroachment on Second Amendment rights.
Sullivan’s son, Alex, was one of 12 killed in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises.” The tragedy catapulted Sullivan into activism around gun control and then public office, where he has spearheaded many bills on the issue.
Sullivan said the weapons that the bill seeks to curtail are involved in only a small fraction of gun deaths and injuries. Those firearms include a long list of semi-automatic rifles, along with some pistols and shotguns, with certain characteristics, such as a threaded barrel or detachable stock.
Their prohibition wouldn’t make much of a dent in gun violence, Sullivan argued, and the proposal takes up immense political oxygen in the state capitol — energizing the opposition and detracting from more effective and less controversial gun control measures.
“The narrative is all wrong,” Sullivan said. “That’s what they want you to believe, that it’s assault weapons and schools. It’s not. … It’s suicides and it’s domestic violence.”
The proposal is expected to be

revived next year.
Meanwhile, other bills nearing the governor’s desk include a proposal to give Colorado’s Bureau of Investigations more power to investigate gun sales that are already illegal. Another would require more rigorous safety training for someone seeking a concealed carry permit. And one would require firearm dealers to be permitted by the state, not just the federal government, giving regulators greater power to enforce state law.
— JESSE BEDAYN, Associated PressAurora Anschutz students protest Gaza war with ‘die-in’ and speeches
Despite the cold and windy weather, nearly three dozen students, faculty and others from the university participated May 6 at Anschutz Medical Center in a protest against the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
The event was organized by graduating medical student Sarah Nofal. Attendees, some of whom wore a keffiyeh — a traditional Palestinian scarf — heard from a few speakers who showed their support for Palestine. They also participated in a “die-in,” where they laid on the ground for six minutes in silence. Each minute represented a month of the war.
Nofal said that the campus has been a supportive environment and that it was easy to facilitate this event because of the help and support of staff, faculty and peers.
The event came as university students all over the country, including the University of Colorado at Denver, are engaging in protests against the Israel-Hamas war. According to the Associated Press, more than two thousand students across the country have been arrested as students and local police departments clashed.
There were no counter-protestors at the event. There was law enforcement present at the protest. The event was peaceful and without interruption.
“I cannot help but note that throughout American history, student protests have been a catalyst for justice,” said Omar Mubarak, a Denver-based vascular surgeon, when addressing the crowd. He then spoke about how student protests during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and the Black Lives Matter protests.
During the event, attendees also heard from Mohammad Sobeh, who escaped from Gaza following the initial attacks in October. He communicated to the audience through an interpreter. Sobeh spoke about how 25 people in his uncle’s family were killed when a building collapsed and the fear of hearing the missiles but not knowing where they would hit. He also spoke about how families would send children to spend the night at a relative’s house so that if a missile hit their home at night, there would still be a couple surviving
family members.
Sobeh said that his son, an American, paid thousands of dollars to bring him and a few other family members to America.
“It is close to my heart as I am Palestinian myself, and I’m also in the medical field ,and I’ve made a lifelong commitment to taking care of others,” Nofal said. “We also have a responsibility to advocate for those who cannot for themselves, namely being the defenseless population, the civilians of Gaza and the West Bank.”
— KRISTIN OH, Sentinel Staff WriterColorado OKs $24 million for migrant students. Here’s what Aurora schools get.
A surge of one-time money will reach 85 Colorado school districts — almost half of all districts in the state — this month to help offset costs of an unprecedented number of new students arriving midyear, mainly from South America.
Between October and Feb. 29, Colorado school districts received 8,085 newcomer students spread throughout the state, according to data submitted by the districts to the state.
Colorado lawmakers last month approved the use of $24 million in state funding to help school districts experiencing an influx of new migrant students this year. Colorado funds schools based on enrollment counts from October. Every year there are some students who leave or enroll in schools after October, and the district’s funding doesn’t get adjusted.
But this school year, district leaders, especially in large districts such as Denver and Aurora, said the number of new students they were receiving after October was much larger than in typical years.
To be eligible for the money, districts had to submit their request, along with a record of their enrollment counts, to the Colorado Department of Education. The department used a formula approved by state lawmakers to figure out how much each district will receive. Nine districts that applied were not eligible for any of the money.
Aurora Public Schools reported 1,506 “newcomer” students and received $3.9 in additional funding. Cherry Creek schools district reported 535 newcomer students and will receive an additional $1.6 million in funding.
Districts got money in two ways. First, there was a tiered system that gave certain set amounts of money to districts based on how many new arrivals they’ve enrolled between October and Feb. 29. Then, districts could also qualify for additional money, on a per student basis — if those new arrivals resulted in net increases in district enrollment.
overall declining enrollment, their total student count by February was still lower than it was in October.
The Adams 12 school district, for example, enrolled 374 new arrivals, but because of overall enrollment declines, their total enrollment is down 58 students compared to October. That meant Adams 12 qualified for $550,000 from the tiered system, but did not receive any per-student amount in addition to that.
Districts will receive their funding allocations this month, though for most, it will serve to reimburse them for money they’ve already spent on hiring extra staff earlier

Right: Sophomore No. 1 singles player Natali Marshall is the first singles player from the Eaglecrest girls tennis program to make the state tournament since 2014. Marshall earned her spot as the runner-up at Region 1 at Cherry Creek High School.
Below top: Senior Lucy Filippini will make her fourth career appearance at the Class 5A girls tennis state tournament as part of the Regis Jesuit No. 1 doubles team.
Below middle: Grandview seniors Quincy Muntean, left, and Maddie Mayer made it through a regional playback to earn a spot in the 5A girls tennis individual state tournament.
Below bottom: Regis Jesuit senior No. 2 singles player Mary Clare Watts won a regional playback match to make her first Class 5A state tournament as a singles player and fourth overall.
The greatest puzzle is ahead for Natali Marshall, but she is eager to try to put together the pieces.
The Eaglecrest sophomore earned a coveted spot in the Class 5A girls tennis individual state tournament by virtue of making the Region 1 final at Cherry Creek High School and now she’ll set to work on finding a way to win on the big stage.
Marshall lost in straight sets to Cherry Creek senior Anika Sharma — last season’s 5A state champion at No. 2 singles — but her semifinal win kept her out of a playback and helped her accomplish something she’d hoped to do since she fell short as a freshman.
Marshall is the first Eaglecrest state qualifier since the doubles team of Maya Johnson and Kaitlin Marlier in 2016 and she is the first state-bound singles player for the Raptors since Renee Christopher in 2014.
Also going to the state tournament individually is the Grandview No. 3 doubles team of seniors Maddie Mayer and Quincy Muntean, who made it out of Region 4 in Highlands Ranch with their first state berth.
The duo played together in 2023 and lost a playback with a chance to make state and found themselves in the same situation this year. Down a set to Legend, the Wolves roared back to dominate the last two sets.
“Going to state is the pinnacle of any sport,” Mayer said. “It’s amazing to see how far the two of us have come in the last two years and I couldn’t think of a better way to end my high school career.”
Court contingent
“I was fourth at regionals last year, and only the top two go to state, so it’s been my goal to make it since last year,” Marshall said. “Even though I lost this last match, (Sharma’s) a great player, and I was using it as a learning experience. It was good preparation.”
BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports EditorThe 5A girls tennis individual state tournament runs May 9-11 at Denver’s City Park, and Marshall will go into it with 16 wins, which puts her fourth in 5A.
That victory came in a three-set outlasting of Chatfield’s Cameron Sternberg in a windy regional semifinal that turned out to be the clincher, as Sternberg’s win in the third-place match eliminated a playback chance.
Despite the defeat to Sharma, Eaglecrest coach Dave Palmer saw Marshall hang in and raise her play as usual in the second set and make the match more competitive until the final point.
“Natali’s strength is that she’s a problem-solver, and the game is a puzzle,” he said. “The first set she was a little overwhelmed, but then she settled in and start to get games. She started to figure things out and that’s what she always does. That’s exactly what you want in any player.”
Added Muntean: “We just want to go out playing our best and not making unforced errors. I’m so proud of us.”
Grandview’s first opponent will be Regis Jesuit, which will take its entire team to the individual state tournament for the second straight season under coach Jenn Armstrong.
The Raiders turned right around from a loss to Ralston Valley in the semifinals of the 5A team state tournament to dominate the Region 7 tournament.
No. 3 singles player Otylia Martino and all four doubles teams — seniors Lucy Filippini and Brenna Radebaugh at No. 1, juniors Cait Carolan and Ebba Svard at No. 2, senior Torri Loftus and junior Lily Beebe at No. 3 and senior Elise Holt and sophomore Helen Adams at No. 4 — all won regional championships to get in. Junior Rebecca Gelfer got in at No. 1 singles as regional runner-up, while senior Mary Clare Watts won a playback to make it at No. 2 singles.
Eight of the 11 state-bound Regis Jesuit players have made it at least once previously, while it will be the fourth trip for both Watts and Filippini, who played together at No. 1 doubles in 2022. Watts was a state runner-up at No. 1 doubles last season, and she’s in state for the first time as a singles player. Radebaugh, Svard, Carolan and Holt all earned a third career trip to state.

BOYS SWIMMING
Large Aurora contingent set for 5A state meet
The numbers are high and strong for Aurora going into the Class 5A boys swimming state meet, as 58 individuals and 14 relay teams from five city programs qualified to compete.
Prelims for the swimming portion of the meet begin at 10 a.m. May 10 at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton, with the diving competition set to commence at 8:55 a.m. May 11. Swim finals begin at 4 p.m. Regis Jesuit is on a quest to win its third consecutive 5A state championship and enters the meet with an Aurora-best 21 qualifiers, a group that does not include a single diver. Coach Nick Frasersmith’s Raiders have all three relay teams seeded in the top eight, while junior Reid Magner and sophomore Nolan Kohl come in seeded in position to make championship finals (top 10) in two individual events.
The next-largest local group comes from Smoky Hill, which has a group of 14 that includes one diver. Nine of the qualifiers for coach Scott Cohen’s Buffaloes are seniors, including Daniel Yi, who enters the meet as the No. 1 seed in the 100 yard breaststroke and No. 2 in the 200 yard individual medley. Yi is also a key part of Smoky Hill’s 200 yard medley relay team, which is 5A’s third-fastest.
Grandview also has double-digit qualifiers with 12, a group headed by junior Oliver Schimberg, who is the defending 5A state champion in the 100 backstroke. Schimberg is the No. 2 seed in that event going in as well as second in the 100 yard butterfly. Coach Dan Berve’s Wolves are seeded to make the championship final in all three relay events.
Cherokee Trail has eight statebound individuals, led by junior sprint
freestyle standout Bronson Smothers, who is a top-five seed in both of his individual events. Coach Kevin Chatham’s Cougars are seeded to make the championship finals in the freestyle relays. Overland takes two individuals and two relay teams.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Three city teams earn spots in state tourney
There will be a new state champion in boys volleyball this season, as Discovery Canyon — which had won both titles since the sport became sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association — got upset as the top seed in regionals.
That leaves an opening for one of the three Aurora-area program to make a run at the crown, as the group of Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest and Grandview all won regional tournaments on their home floors May 3-4 to earn spots in the state tournament, which starts May 9 at Overland High School. Coach Chad Bond’s Raptors were last season’s state runner-up and coach Mike Thomsen’s Cougars have also been to state before, but it will be a first for coach Scott Nugent’s Wolves, who won a five-set regional final against Arvada West to qualify.
Eaglecrest handled Regis Jesuit and Poudre School District in straight sets to claim the Region 4 title on its home floor, while Grandview (Region 6) and Cherokee Trail (Region 8) had more difficulty. The Cougars needed five sets to defeat Legend in their re-
gional opener and then swept Niwot, though the final set went to 32-30. The Wolves dropped their opening regional set to Bear Creek, but won the next three to take the match and opened against Arvada with two wins. The Wildcats pushed it to a fifth set, only to see Grandview prevail 15-12.
Vista PEAK Prep — the No. 10 seed in regionals — went on the road to Fountain-Fort Carson and won a fiveset match against Valor Christian, but dropped a four-setter to the host team with a state berth on the line, while Hinkley (at Region 3 at Thornton) and Regis Jesuit (at Region 4 at Eaglecrest) lost both regional matches to cap outstanding seasons.

Paint with Aurora with foliage not flowers
ANOTHER WAY WAY TO ADD COLOR TO YOUR MILE-HIGH GARDEN.
BY JESSICA DAMIANO, Associated PressWhen we want to add color to the garden, most of us set our sights on flowers. But many leaf-forward plants can outlast and even outcompete those with colorful blossoms.
For starters, foliage plants don’t wax and wane or have a limited bloom time. In addition, many can brighten up shady spots that don’t offer enough sunlight for flowers. And they tend to be lower maintenance since they don’t need pruning or deadheading to keep blooming or look their best.
Foliage plants can add depth, texture and contrast to beds and containers, serving as focal points or backdrops for other plants. There are many species, varieties and cultivars to choose from.
All of these perennial plants can be treated as annuals outside of their hardiness zones, except for the ornamental grasses, which would likely be impractical and too expensive to plant for a single season.
GROUND COVERS
Consider Heuchera, aka coral bells or alumroot, which is equally (if not primarily) valued for its large, heart-shaped or rounded frilly leaves as for its tall flower stalks that bloom from spring through summer. It’s available in a dizzying array of leaf colors, from muted green and cream to bright chartreuse and bold maroon, copper, red and purple. There are also variegated varieties and some with distinct leaf veins. You
can plant Heuchera as a single specimen or as a ground cover in part shade to part sun (perennial in zones 4-9).
Siberian bugloss (Brunnera macryphylla) is another beautiful foliage plant that works well as a groundcover. Among the choices are “Jack Frost,” a variety that boasts silvery foliage that contrasts nicely with surrounding greenery, and “Jack of Diamonds,” which has giant, overlapping, heart-shaped leaves with dark green veining (perennial in zones 3-8).
Sweet potato vine, often planted at the outside edge of containers for a spilling effect, will quickly cover ground (or a trellis) with vining heart-shaped, lobed or lacy green, chartreuse, purple, green, red, bronze, burgundy or purple leaves (perennial in zones 9-11).
And Artemisia, also known as mugwort or wormwood, adds an attention-grabbing, silvery touch to beds and containers, particularly in moon gardens, for which plants are selected for their ability to “glow” in the moonlight. The fragrant plant also resists deer and rabbit browsing (perennial in zones 3 or 4 through 8, 9 or 10, depending on variety).
MID-SIZE MARVELS
The polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya) is a party in a pot (or garden bed), its vibrant foliage splashed with pink, white or red blotches or dots. Typically growing 12 to 18 inches tall, with some varieties reaching 3 feet, the plant thrives best in part sun (perennial in zones 10-11).
Angel wings (Caladium), prized for their intricately patterned, arrowhead-shaped foliage,
can grow up to 2 feet tall. Each plant sends up individual leaves of pink, red, white and/or green, their veins and, often, colored margins brightening partially shady spots (perennial in zones 8-12). With hundreds of varieties in different heights, colors, leaf sizes and shapes, there’s likely a Coleus for every garden or container. Most prefer shade, some can tolerate sun, and all quickly grow into dense clusters to provide near-instant gratification (perennial in zones 10-11).
STATEMENT PLANTS
Pink Muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris), native to Eastern North America, shines in fall with its pink, airy inflorescences, which technically are flowers, but not in the colloquial sense. In winter, its plumes fade to silver-gray. At just 2-3 feet tall and wide, you can plant one as a standalone or line several up to create a short hedgerow (zones 6-9).
Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a 3-foot-tall delight with gray-green blades and dramatic red, purple and orange autumn colors that persist through winter. It’s also a North American prairie native that serves as a larval host for several skipper butterfly species (zones 4-9).
Just about anyone can add a tropical flair to beds and borders with “Black Magic” elephant ears (Colocasia). The traffic-stopping plant quickly grows to a height of 3-5 feet by midseason. Its nearly black, deep-purple, heart-shaped leaves often surpass 2 feet in length. Outside the plant’s hardiness range, gardeners can dig up and store its tuber in autumn for replanting the following spring (zones 9-11).
SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
AFTER DECADES OF CONSTERNATION OVER SCHOOL FUNDING EQUITY, A NEW PLAN AND SOME OLD PROBLEMS
BY KRISTIN OH, Sentinel Staff WriterAfter decades of angst among school districts and promises from state lawmakers, the state appears poised to create a new funding model for public schools.
Officials in Aurora’s two school districts say they continue to examine how the complex, proposed bill will fund and support public education.
Two things have for decades drawn controversy to public schools funding in Colorado, school officials say: how much and who gets it.
“This bill is a monumental step forward for public education in Colorado,” bill sponsor Rep. Julie McCluskie said in the
press statement. “For far too long, our school finance formula has not invested in the students with the greatest needs, underfunding rural districts and those serving more children in poverty; now is the time to get this right and drive equity into how we fund our schools.”
Most school district officials and many state lawmakers have for generations lamented that statewide school funding in Colorado is among the lowest per-pupil in the nation, somewhere around 46 out of 50 states, depending on the year, according to a variety of national databases.
How resources are shared among disparate school districts has also been a regular
SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
point of contention and contention among school districts.
Small, rural school districts, especially those in poor communities, need more dollars per student to make school budgets work, even, and especially, for small school districts. But larger school districts often have students with myriad special needs, requiring extra resources.
For decades, schools have fought the battle of large-scale vs the challenges of small schools.
All this became even more complicated when state voters approved the Taxpayer Bill of Rights Amendment in 1992. That measure requires all tax hikes to garner voter approval, and it simultaneously caps spending levels. In an effort to counter that measure, educational proponents persuaded statewide voters to approve Amendment 23, in 2000. That measure required the state to not only hold school funding but increase it annually by the rate of inflation or more.
For the past several years, the state has been unable to make good on Amendment 23 promises, and schools have been “short-funded” every year, to the tune of billions of dollars statewide.
This year, in a separate measure, state lawmakers passed a plan to “fully fund” public schools, repaying some of the back-due funds.
And state lawmakers are now poised to redraw the schematic of how all schools are funded.
With the new formula proposed in House Bill 1448, more funding will go toward students from underserved student communities. Among them are: students with disabilities, at-risk students and English language learners.
able to increase the cap on the mill levy override, under the amended state bill.
Corey Christiansen, spokesperson for Aurora Public Schools said that the district’s mill levy cap will increase from 25% to 29%, allowing for potential local property tax increases for APS operating expenses. While APS officials have talked publicly about a potential bond issue or mil levy increase, the school board has not agreed to ask voters in November for either.
At Cherry Creek School District, the mill levy increase cap would increase from 25% to 30%. However Cherry Creek spokesperson Lauren Snell said that any mill levy override funding requires voter approval, a matter that the school board has also not taken up.
When the bill was first introduced in April, Cherry Creek opposed the bill. Since then, the district has taken a neutral position on the bill.
“While we remain concerned about the long-term viability of funding to implement this new legislation, Cherry Creek Schools was able to negotiate some favorable changes to the law and will monitor status on the final bill,” Snell said. “We look forward to continuing to work with lawmakers to prioritize funding for K-12 education and ensure a high-quality education for all Colorado students.”
Both Aurora school district officials say they support the concept of the bill that increases per-pupil school funding based on the needs of students.
AFTER DECADES OF CONSTERNATION OVER SCHOOL FUNDING EQUITY, A NEW PLAN AND SOME OLD PROBLEMS
A school district’s size and cost-of-living will also factor into how much money they receive from the school. If the bill passes, additional money — about $500 million new — will flow into school districts statewide at the start of the 2025-26 school year. The new formula will be gradually implemented over six years. The new formula will determine school districts’ budgets for the 2030-31 school year.
“When fully implemented, there will be $866 million in the formula for our at-risk students, $142.7 million for English Language Learners, and $240 million in the formula for our Special Education students,” a Tuesday press statement from the Colorado House Democrats said.
School district’s will also be
Christiansen said that APS has always supported the bill. He said that the current changes proposed to the formula “support equitable funding for some of the most vulnerable student populations,” and the changes to the formula will allow the district to increase overall funding and student achievement.
He added that more than 75% of the district’s student population are eligible for a free or reduced lunch — a measure that earmarks students for extra funding, under HB 1448. Also, more than 55% of students are English Language Learners, another earmark for increased per-pupil funding. APS also teaches a large population of students with special needs.
The bipartisan bill is in the state Senate, according to a press statement from the Colorado House Democrats. If the bill passes there, it still must be signed by Gov. Jared Polis to become law.

(I can’t imagine my life without you). The Chicano philosophy of life is centered around the essence of community, culture, and the deeper connections created through shared experience, allowing for unique perspectives on the value of platonic and community love. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti highlights the importance of friendship from a Chicano perspective. In the U.S we have been taught to prioritize romantic, idealistic love. However, love comes in many forms beyond the romantic that provides support, care, and healing opportunities in ways romantic love cannot. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti will draw attention to the crucial work of Chicano artists while helping to educate the public on platonic love, and the ways in which values of strength, tenderness, cultural preservation, and spiritual growth are nurtured through friendship. Visitors to the exhibition will become inspired to connect to community, challenging traditional notions of love, and therefore planting seeds to build resistance to a hyper individualistic, anti-human society.
Diverse in medium and background, this exhibitions Xicanx artists include Oswaldo Cepeda, Cal Duran, Armando Geneyro, Pico del Hierro-Villa, Arlette Lucero, and Cherish Marquez.

Saint-Saëns’s
Samson and Delilah
Opera Colorado closes the season with Saint-Saëns’s operatic take on the biblical story of Samson and Delilah. Samson, leader of the Hebrews, is a man of super-human strength. He has one true weakness, and it’s the sultry Delilah’s job to discover it and ensure victory for the Philistines. Indulge in a performance of stunning visuals, epic dance, and some of opera’s most gorgeously evocative music culminating in a finale that literally brings the house down.

Brahms Symphony No. 3
For much of his life, Johannes Brahms felt the omnipresent weight of Beethoven’s shadow looming over him but by the time he reached this, his third and perhaps most stirring symphony, he had emphatically found his own unique voice and flourished into an icon in his own right. The Third is richly Romantic, featuring sweeping, lyrical string lines and beautifully autumnal woodwind passages that make this symphony a delight from start to finish.
Electrifying violinist Stefan Jackiw — called “...one of the most insightful violinists of his generation” by The Boston Globe — lends his athletic virtuosity to Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto which features a lively and dance-like final movement that will leap off the stage under the baton of Jun Märkl.

— KRISTIN OH, Sentinel Staff WriterCity of Aurora seeks industry and citizen reps for oil and gas advisory group
Aurorans who want a voice in the local regulation of oil and gas drilling can apply until May 8 for seats on the city’s Oil and Gas Advisory Committee.
State law gives cities wide latitude to regulate how the industry operates within their boundaries for the purposes of protecting public health and the environment. Currently, a few dozen well sites, all east of E-470, have approval from the City of Aurora to operate.
The Oil and Gas Advisory Committee provides feedback to city staffers and elected officials on the state of the industry in the city.
It includes three industry representatives, three owners of property where oil and gas operations are located and five members of the public who have no background in the business, including two people from the wards most impacted by drilling.
Applications are being accepted now for two of the citizen positions and one industry position. One of
the citizen positions will fill the last part of a term concluding June 30, 2025., while the two other positions will serve full, three-year terms.
Industry candidates must be registered to vote in Colorado and their employer must be registered with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and actively involved in oil and gas drilling, production or exploration in Aurora.
Details may be found at buff. ly/44qHXsx, and an online application is available at buff.ly/44u0hAY. The city said in a news release that all applications will be kept on file for a year in case more seats open up.
