Oy vey-cation calamity as mayor careens into local travel troubles
One of the first things Americans realize when they travel outside the country is that, despite what we are often taught to believe, this is not the center of the Universe, or even the planet.
Some Aurora lawmakers haven’t figured that out and the city’s mayor doesn’t seem to want them to.
I grew up feeling sorry for people unlucky enough to not be born in the United States, and having to live in places where they spend most of their waking hours lamenting not being here.
By the time I started learning “foreign” languages and meaningful world history in junior high school, I began to realize it wasn’t all about us.
And when curiosity drew me onto an empty freighter ship in Florida bound for Cartagena, I started understanding how most of the world gets along just fine without us, and often better.
One of my first teen experiences in, “wow, I didn’t know” was drinking Colombian hot chocolate, “choco-latte a la taza.” It’s a more bitter than sweet hot drink with chunks of fresh cheese in the bottom. Really. You sip the wideeyed, rich, hot chocolate and then spoon melty rich salty cheese out of the cup. It makes American packets of Carnation Instant taste like brown crayon water.
More importantly, I learned there’s an entire world out there who actually live without cars — on purpose — yet manage to get all over town, the country and the world.
Since then, I’ve been resolved and lucky enough to wander all over the planet, discovering all kinds of amazing things, most of which have little or nothing to do with our assumed place at the top of the globe.
Since most Americans who wander beyond our borders often come away with very similar observations, it struck me as beyond odd that Mayor Mike Coffman had a tantrum over two city councilpersons going to a French suburb as part of the International Making Cities Livable Conference.
Coffman dissed the trip, saying in a tweet and on talk radio that it was “an insult to the hardworking taxpayers of this city” for the two to attend “a conference, in Paris of all places,” concluding that the “next time they want to take a Eu-
ropean vacation, they can pay for it themselves.”
He was so incensed that Murillo and Marcano would travel to an outlying Paris suburb — it was not Paris — “of all places,” that he pitched a new law essentially banning lawmakers from traveling outside the country using city money.
“As somebody who traveled internationally in another office, I just really fail to see the value of local elected officials traveling internationally,” Coffman, a former congressperson, said Monday, according to a story by Sentinel reporter Max Levy.
Coffman failed to mention that last fall he flew to El Salvador on your hard-earned tax dollars to glad-hand in a San Salvador suburb. Aurora has a large Salvadoran immigrant population, and El Salvador has a world class disaster on its hands being overrun by gang activity and shootings and half of the rest of all nations trying to sort out ways to keep the nation’s citizens from fleeing their home country.
I hope Coffman learned something he brought home as a “local elected official” sent to El Salvador to, perhaps, solve the immigration crisis.
I hope he was able to get out of his hotel and itinerary to find out for himself how charming and gracious just folks are in the San Salvador region. There’s plenty to learn from a nation with cities packed with people who seem pleasant no matter how hot and steamy it gets. The coffee and barista art is like nothing you’ve ever experienced here, in Italy or, “of all places, Paris.”
While travel agents and Parisian travel industry officials have
have to live like this.
After going to a lot of places in my life, that’s the most important thing I learn every time I leave and come back: We don’t have to live like this. Other people don’t.
In Vienna, there are no turnstiles or ticket-checkers on their amazing subways and metro trains. It’s an honor system that people will pay, because it’s worth it. And it is. And they do. If someone is too broke or greedy to pay? Enough of everyone else does to make it work, and work well.
There are places in Germany, Holland and Norway where the roads are only for bikes or skiers. They don’t complain. They bike and ski to school, the store and to work.
carefully nurtured the image of Paris being the chic-chic capital of the world, anyone who’s been there, outside of a guided trip, can tell you it’s very much not. It’s an amazing place that is able to provide homes to millions and entertainment to hundreds of millions of people efficiently, or pretty efficiently.
The suburbs, however, especially the outlying ones, are no more like the Champs-Élysées than Havana Street is in west Aurora.
That famous Paris lane is filled with all kinds of tony things to wear and tuck away in your closet, all of which are much cheaper on Amazon.
But Havana Street in Aurora? You can get ramen just as good as you would if you flew to Tokyo for it. There are pork carnitas in a smoky chipotle blessing better than any in the top food quarters of Mexico City. Waxy potatoes await on Havana Street with a flowery pungent rub that if they weren’t here you’d have to find your way to East Africa to get.
I know because I’ve been to some of those places, here and there.
City Councilperson Curtis Garnder this week said he, too, just made an “official” trip to Mexico City. No doubt he was treated to some good stuff from one of the best foodie cities on the planet. But his takeaway was how the city manages to have one of the best public transit systems anywhere, despite the city’s love of cars, just like ours.
Even if Gardner didn’t learn first hand how to fix the Aurora metro area’s transit system, which needs serious help, he came back determined to tell people, we don’t
And given that Aurora has spent hundreds of millions of your “hard earned” dollars to lure the international to Gaylord of the Rockies Conference Center and work endlessly to lure government-funded tourists or any kind of tourist to Aurora, to see how uniquely diverse and international we are, a clever person would think it odd that Coffman has such a problem with city lawmakers going there, too.
If you’re like Coffman, and others who believe that we can only make Aurora safer if we get tough, tougher, no, toughest on crime, you don’t know that in Iceland, they found out that plentiful and cheap education, good paying jobs and a strong social safety net has made that nation the safest in the world. And the fish soup in the fjords? Unparalleled.
Don’t tell Aurora fellow electeds like Dustin Zvonek and Danielle Jurinsky — who are convinced that tons of more cops everywhere are the way to end shootings and car thefts — to stay off city-related international flights.
They and other city officials have been spending tens of thousands of your “hard earned dollars” to fly to Washington D.C. to lobby Colorado’s own congressional delegation, who all live here. D.C. has some amazing restaurants, but if anything is a picture of everything we don’t want Aurora to be.
Coffman should actually send them to places like Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Osaka, to see for themselves what success looks like.
And if they get to taste fabulous cliff bird eggs or outrageous smørrebrød? All the better. Follow @EditorDavePerry on Twitter and Facebook or reach him at 303750-7555 or dperry@SentinelColorado.com
There is no time for despair over the loss of women’s critical rights eradicated last week by Supreme Court judicial political activists.
Residents in Colorado and in every state must move quickly and decisively to build the case for voters to remove elected far-right extremists from positions of the minority power they abuse, endangering even more American rights and freedoms.
The vast majority of Americans already agree that, at the very least, women in the United States should never be forced to carry to term pregnancies caused by rapists or die being forced to suffer ectopic pregnancies or life-threatening obstetric medical issues.
And the vast majority of Americans, regardless of their views of abortion, clearly understand that the question of abortion rights is one of government intrusion.
It is untenable and unconscionable that anyone, especially an elected or appointed official, should be empowered to impose their will on women, their bodies and lives.
The time has passed to ensure that those appointed and empowered to protect the rights of Americans faithfully yield to their promises and oaths. Instead, the court system has been corrupted by former President Donald Trump and recent past Senate chambers as they stacked courts, including the Supreme Court, with frauds, activists and liars.
Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett have made clear they actually are the political activists Americans were warned they were.
It’s unclear how the legislative and executive branches of the government can protect Americans from a Supreme Court made rogue by judicial activists. Complicit members of Congress or the federal administration, however, will only hasten the slide toward a theocracy like the one wielding control over citizens in Iran. There, as currently here, court-clergy claim the rights of the government outweigh the rights of citizens, and especially women.
Americans are aghast that assurances they were given regarding the half-century old and reaffirmed Roe v. Wade decision were undermined by a rogue court they can no longer trust.
Millions fear that neither these rogue justices nor the politicians that placed them there will stop at this.
The only defense Americans have is preemptively voting out of office those who either have no objection to how women were abused by this decision, or worse, those who actively support it and seek to further limit the rights of women or other Americans.
The uphill battle isn’t persuading Americans how unjust these regimes are — about two-thirds of Americans disapproved of the Supreme Court undermining the Roe v. Wade decision, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll from last week. An NPR Marist poll revealed that 57% of Americans saw the Supreme Court decision as based on politics, not law.
The battle will be in persuading every one of those who object to register to vote and mark their ballot for elected leaders who agree with them about how barbaric this Supreme Court scheme has been.
With national and state elections just a few short months away, the time for action in regaining critical rights for women is now.
Here in Colorado, we know that our differences are what make us even better – and that extends to our vibrant and diverse immigrant communities including Aurora. Simply put, our immigrant communities enrich our state, invigorate our culture and cuisine, and contribute millions to our economy
There’s a reason that I ran for Governor with an emphasis on creating a “Colorado for All.” This means ensuring that every person in our state has the opportunity to thrive here, whether they arrived one year ago, ten years ago, or their family has been here for generations. And since I took office, we have spent everyday working to make that vision a reality for the people of Colorado.
As a member of Congress, I was proud to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) when it was first created 10 years ago by President Obama, and now as Governor, I’m incredibly proud to see the effect it has had here in Colorado and meet so many Coloradans who benefit from it.
This program, which allows those who were brought to the United States as children to work legally, has changed countless lives, and benefited us all. There are more than 14,000 DACA recipients here in Colorado with a spending power of nearly $400 Million dollars – and estimates show that their removal from our state would not only rob them of the only country they know, but also cost more than $800 Million from our annual GDP. Not to mention the incredible talent, creativity, and innovation that our state would lose.
Take Mario Bravo for example. Mario came to the United States with his family when he was eight months old, and has spent his life in Grand Junction. With DACA protections, Mario has been inspired to follow his passion for software engineering, which led him to start the first chapter of Hispanic Engineers at Colorado Mesa University. After graduation, Mario took a job at Apple, but hopes to one day start his own business here in Colorado.
Then there’s Adriana Montiel. Adriana has lived in Colorado for 24 years, and always dreamed of becoming a teacher, but it seemed out of reach until DACA was passed during her sophomore year of high school. Those protections opened the
door to Adriana getting her degree and fulfilling her dream. Now, Adriana works with gifted and emerging bilingual students at the very same Aurora high school that she graduated from.
Alejandra Webster is an acute care nurse, but the path to get there wasn’t easy. Alejandra worked hard as a certified nursing assistant, but it wasn’t until she became a DACA recipient, that Alejandra was able to consider college as a possibility. Alejandra secured her Bachelor’s in the Science of Nursing from Metropolitan State University of Denver, and thanks to SB 21-077, which allows immigrants to pursue professional licensing, Alejandra was able to get her nursing license. Since then, she has served in COVID-19 units and been on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and a critical member of the healthcare workforce.
These are not just DACA recipients, these are Coloradans. They are our friends and neighbors, family members and coworkers, and they deserve to be here as much as anyone else.
DACA has brought so many benefits to our state, but the work isn’t over. Not only is DACA being challenged in federal court, but federal immigration reform efforts tragically remain stalled. If this were an easy issue to solve, then it would’ve been done already, but it’s well past time for the federal government to take action and create a common-sense immigration system that protects our borders, restores the rule of law, and works for the United States and the families that are proud to call Colorado home.
But President Biden can do more to help fix our broken immigration system even without Congress. The President should move forward with the Deferred Action for Parents program, which would allow the parents of U.S. Citizens to have temporary legal work permits.. This actions would of course benefit the millions of immigrants whose futures are uncertain because of our chaotic system, but it would also benefit our economy and our communities if we do it right.
As we celebrate the historic anniversary of DACA, as well as Immigrant Heritage Month, we should celebrate how far we’ve come while not forgetting the important work that lies ahead. Democrat Gov. Jared Polis is in his first term as Colorado governor.
Shock over court activism won’t restore women’s rights, only voting can do that

School of hard tax
CHERRY CREEK SCHOOLS OFFICIALS SAY CAP ON LOCAL VOTER APPROVED TAX INCREASES WILL LIMIT TEACHERS RAISES AND INNOVATION
Cherry Creek schools officials warn that as the district reaches a limit on local property tax hikes to boost operating costs, it will be reliant on per-pupil funding limits set by the state.
That was the takeaway from a presentation Cherry Creek School District Chief Financial Officer Scott Smith gave to the school board at its June 13 meeting, where the board voted unanimously to approve the 2022-2023 budget.
“At the end of the day, the revenue from the state is what we get,” Smith said. “We have to have a balanced budget.”
ucation needs that the state couldn’t provide, he said. Now that the cap has been reached, that’s no longer an option.
Going forward, Smith said Cherry Creek “can’t give the kind of raises we’ve done in the past or open the new types of programs we’ve done in the past unless the state really starts to step up and finally fund K-12 in an adequate fashion.”
Kasey Ellis, president of the Cherry Creek Education Association, said that the increase is about what was expected.
“It’s been made really clear to us at the bargaining table that the district has to live within its means,” she said.
Rising inflation is a challenge for the district’s employees, along with a 0.5% increase in PERA contributions that kicks in this year for all members and employers who pay into the retirement association.
BY CARINA JULIG, Sentinel StaffHistorically, Smith said Cherry Creek had a philosophy of living outside its state-contributed means financially, and made up deficits by periodically going to voters for mill-levy overrides, essentially property tax increases. The 52,000-student district has now hit the state-mandated cap for the amount of money it is allowed to collect through mill levies — which means for all intents and purposes the district is dependent on increases to per pupil revenue from the state, he said.
State lawmakers cap revenue from mill levy overrides at 25% of total district funding, which Cherry Creek has now reached, along with Aurora Public Schools, Denver Public Schools and the Boulder Valley School District.
The district will still be able to ask for bond issues, Smith said. Those are property tax increases dedicated to building and capital improvements, not operating expenses. The district plans to stick with its schedule of asking voters for bond increases every four years for those purchases. The most recent bond-issue increase was approved in 2020 and will be used for projects including security upgrades, the construction of a new elementary school and the creation of a mental health day treatment facility.
Smith told The Sentinel that while having reached the cap is frustrating, the real problem is that the state funds public education so poorly. The mill levy has been essentially used by districts to backfill millions of dollars in ed-
This fiscal year the district’s per-pupil funding will increase by $546, or 6.1%, to a total of $9,548. The increase is usually about 3% or 4% Smith said and will likely revert to that in the future. This year was higher due to an influx of federal money into the state budget.
Per-pupil spending set by the state is based on a complex formula linked to state revenues, student demographics, the district’s size and even urban or rural nature.
Along with the mill levy cap, declining enrollment is another factor that will limit the district’s budget going forward. Like many other districts in the metro area, Smith said Cherry Creek is now considered to be a district with declining enrollment. Since the 2019-2020 school year the district has lost more than 2,000 students and is projected to lose 4,332 students between that school year and 2024-25.
That’s driven largely by demographic trends, Smith said, but affordability issues in the region are also a factor. Despite a political narrative about families fleeing the public school system for private education, Smith said that isn’t a driving factor for the district.
“We have 52,000 kids in our district, from the start of the pandemic to now only 50 kids more are opting for private school so that’s not moving the needle for us at all,” he said.
The number of students zoned for Cherry Creek who attend non-district schools was not immediately available.
The Cherry Creek School District will allocate $29 million to teacher and staff raises in its 2022-2023 budget, its biggest single expenditure in the upcoming year’s budget. That will amount to about a 5.25% raise to all employee groups beginning July 1.
“The increase that we saw, we are paying 0.5% of that to PERA,” Ellis said.
As part of its capital reserves, new expenditures for the coming year will include the creation of a health clinic at Smoky Hill High School after the success of two schoolbased health clinics that the district opened this spring in partnership with STRIDE.
The district plans to use money from the third round of the federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER III) to preserve teaching jobs that would otherwise have to be cut. ESSER III funds were allocated in 2021 (Cherry Creek received $33.4 million in total) and must be used by September of 2023, so it is not a permanent solution to preserving staffing positions. Smith acknowledged that this will create a “fiscal cliff” for the district.
The 20% of ESSER III funds required to go directly toward addressing student learning loss will go toward programs including before-and-after school tutoring, in-person and online summer programs and the purchase of a curriculum to support K-5 reading education.
Ultimately, Smith said the district is attempting to make the best use of its resources under a state funding model that makes it very difficult for schools to meet all their needs.
“When you’re routinely in the top 20% of economic activity in the U.S. and routinely in the bottom percent in how you fund public education, those two things are incongruent in my head,” he said.
Polis plans to staff pools
Colorado’s governor says he wants to help keep public pools in Aurora and other cities afloat this summer with grants and policy changes meant to alleviate staffing problems.
Gov. Jared Polis told an audience at Aurora’s Central Recreation Center on Tuesday that his administration will be waiving restrictions on 16- and 17-year-olds clocking overtime, applying state grant funds to pay new lifeguards $1,000 for completing training, and introducing a new $350,000 grant program to help local governments pay and recruit employees at public pools.
“Getting our pools open is truly a watershed moment for our state,” Polis said. “And trust me, it’s no belly flop: we are getting this done.”
Earlier this year, Aurora announced that public pools would be open on a truncated schedule this summer, as the state and the nation grapple with a shortage of qualified lifeguards. Polis said a poll done by his administration indicated that only about 57% of public pools open in 2019 are opening this year.
“As we get into the heat of summer, that is simply not good enough,” he said.
A news release accompanying Polis’ announcement said Colorado’s Department of Labor and Employment is issuing an emergency waiver effective through Sept. 5 that allows 16- and 17-year-old lifeguards to work up to 10 hours per day and 54 hours per week if their employer deems it necessary.
The department will also collaborate with local workforce centers and pay $1,000 stipends out of its Reskilling, Upskilling, And Next-Skilling Workers Grant program for individuals who become certified or receive related training and start working as lifeguards.
Colorado’s Department of Local Affairs and the Office of Economic Development and International Trade’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Office are funding the dedicated staffing grants of up to $25,000 for local governments, which will start to be awarded July 1. Applicants, including special districts, can make their submissions at dola.colorado. gov/grants_portal/.
Aurora officials who spoke Tuesday framed the need for outdoor recreation in the context of steering young people away from violence, an urgent topic as the city grapples with the twin problems of youth shootings and gang violence.
“Our pools are a primary destination for Aurora’s youth,” Mayor Mike Coffman said. “The availability of our pools and recreation centers this summer is particularly important as we continue to expand our efforts to offer recreation opportunities for our youth in Aurora.”
Councilmember Alison Coombs called Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department the “lifeblood of our city” and said city pools are “part of the social infrastructure that ensures that not only our young people have somewhere to go and have jobs … but it’s also
a place where our families can connect with one another.”
The problem is plaguing schools across the state and nation.
The American Lifeguard Association estimates the shortage impacts one-third of U.S. pools, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Bernard J. Fisher II, director of health and safety at the association, expects that to grow to half of all pools by August, when many teenage lifeguards return to school.
“It is a disaster,” Fisher said.
Erin Pulliam of Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department later said the city has tried to entice lifeguard candidates by offering competitive pay between $16 and $20 an hour, paying for training and certification and providing free memberships to city recreation facilities.
She said that, around Memorial Day, the city employed between 175 and 200 lifeguards. That figure has since risen to between 225 and 250 lifeguards, though it’s less than the city’s goal of 300, she said.
If the city attracts enough lifeguards by the end of the summer, they may be able to open public pools on a schedule similar to previous years, Pulliam said. She described lifeguarding as a flexible summer job for students as well as a source of extra income and a way of staying active for retirees.
“Anybody can be a lifeguard, and we’re trying to get that out there as well,” she said.

APS unveils new logo
Aurora Public Schools will be rolling out a new logo and tagline in the upcoming school year, part of a rebranding effort that it hopes will encourage more families to keep their students in district schools.
There are currently over 8,000 students who live within APS boundaries but choose to attend non-APS schools, Chief Communications Director Patti Moon said during a Tuesday night presentation to the board of education, representing an estimated $108 million revenue loss for the district.
“If we recaptured a percentage of that, that funding would be so critical for students across the district,” Moon said.
The district believes that is driven in part by an outdated image of the district’s academic track record, which it hopes it can begin to reverse by promoting itself more strongly as it emerges from the pandemic.
The current logo was implemented in 2007 at a time the district was not working hard to promote itself, Moon said. The logo now appears dated and along with appearing similar to the Children’s Hospital Colorado logo. Moon said the district has received feedback that it feels “Frankensteined,” — there are too many elements in the image trying to represent different things.
The district itself has changed dramatically since 2007, Moon
METRO
said, when it had chronically low graduation rates and significant achievement gaps. In 2010, the district had a graduation rate of 45.5% and a dropout rate of 6.9%. In 2021, its graduation rate was 76.2% and its dropout rate was 1.6%. The district has also made gains in closing the achievement gap for students of color and lowering discipline rates.
“We are not the district we were in the past,” Moon said.
It’s unrealistic to expect to get back every student within district boundaries, but if the district was able to get some of them back it would help to stabilize funding, she said.
The district partnered with the company Mission Minded to create a new brand. Last fall, the organization began its work by doing a review of the district website, meeting with the communications team and interviewing a range of community members, including board member (and district parent) Nichelle Ortiz.
The firm discovered that people feel a strong sense of community within APS, which is not always the case in districts of its size. It also found that people viewed the district’s diversity as a strength and saw the reputations of the city of Aurora and APS as linked.
Board member Vicki Reinhard, who participated in an all-day session Mission Minded hosted with district leaders in November, said it helped her understand the importance of the district marketing itself.
“It was a learning experience for me because I thought of ‘brand’ as the logo you put on your notebooks and pencils and such.”
In May, the district launched an online survey asking community members to choose between two logos and the taglines “shape your story” and “power your potential.” After viewing the results the district has decided to select logo No. 1 and “power your potential.”
The design will be finalized over the summer and a two-year phased implementation will begin at the start of the next school year. In board meeting documents the district did not provide an estimated cost for the rebranding, but said that as part of the phased rollout it will try to absorb many of the costs into planned maintenance.
“The first step will be to make updates that align with already planned repairs, repainting, etc. so that there would not be an additional unplanned expense for those items. We anticipate that with a phased two-year rollout, a significant amount of the total estimated cost can be absorbed in operational budgets,” according to board documents.
Some of the costs will include removing the current logo from APS’ 71 buildings and 350 vehicles. Disposable goods will be used up and then replaced with new items.
Ortiz, who had initially asked a question about the financial cost, said that she supported the rebranding but didn’t want it to seem like that was the district’s main focus.
“I want us to be able to do this
and all the other things,” she said.

Arrest made in I-70 shooting
Aurora police say they have arrested a man in connection with the shooting of a firefighter who was driving with his family on I-70 in east Aurora earlier this month.
Jeremy Jacob Rocha, 20, was arrested in Commerce City early Thursday and faces charges of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted first-degree murder, police said.
Police said in a press release that they tied Rocha to the June 18 shooting of Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief John Jaros after identifying multiple witnesses and vehicles involved, collecting evidence and conducting several interviews.
Rocha’s case will be prosecuted by the 17th Judicial District. The release said Rocha’s booking photo is being withheld from the public temporarily “due to ongoing investigative steps.”
At a press conference Thursday afternoon, police spokesman Matthew Longshore first offered condolences on behalf of the Aurora Police Department and then read a statement by John Jaros’ wife, Katie, who was in the car along with their three children when John was shot.
Katie Jaros in her statement thanked police and community members who had supported her after the death of her husband.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully express my gratitude,” she said. “As I walk through this grieving process with my children, please be praying for us that God would give us peace and, over time, hearts of forgiveness… I would also like to ask for prayers for the young man who took my husband’s life and that he would one day have the opportunity to experience God’s love, mercy and forgiveness.”
Police commander Rob McGregor said John Jaros was shot after trying to maneuver around cars that had stopped to block the interstate between E-470 and Tower Road for an impromptu street race. McGregor said “several” rounds were fired at the vehicle, and Jaros was struck once.
Lt. Bob Wesner said Rocha is believed to have been the sole shooter and that police don’t anticipate charging anyone else in the incident, adding that the other drivers involved were cooperating with police.
“This is one of the most difficult cases that, in my 30-plus years, we’ve had to work,” McGregor said. “And I will tell you that it impacted all of our investigators to the point where they were working very hard to solve this crime and solve it quickly, especially since the event happened on the eve of Father’s Day.”
McGregor and Wesner both credited the community’s cooperation as well as the involvement of Commerce City and Brighton po-
lice, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the 17th Judicial District for their ability to track down Rocha.
McGregor encouraged anyone encountering street racers to “sit tight and call 911.”
“Street racing is not recreational fun; it’s staggering, dangerous behavior,” McGregor said. “If the community can help us continue to deal with these issues and get information out to the police department, maybe these types of tragedies can be avoided in the future.”

Lives under Colorado’s Klan
TWO COLORADO AUTHORS DEBUT NOVELS FOCUSED ON THE HEIGHT OF WHITE SUPREMACY IN THE MILE HIGH
BY CARINA JULIG, Sentinel Staff WriterIn Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s new novel “Woman of Light,” protagonist Luz Lopez has the gift of clairvoyance, a family trait that allows her to peer into the future. In reverse fashion, Fajardo-Anstine’s book takes a scrying bowl to Colorado’s past, delving into parts of the state’s history that are often overlooked.
It’s one of two novels by local authors to come out recently that is set in 1920s and 1930s Denver, along with Patricia Raybon’s historical thriller “All That Is Secret.” Both novels feature characters of color striving to make their way in the world in a time of many challenges. Along with prohibition, the Great Depression and the aftereffects of World War I, Colorado at the time, and especially Denver, had one of the largest Ku Klux Klan populations in the nation.
It’s the first novel for both authors, following the breakout success of Fajardo-Anstine’s short story collection “Sabrina and Corina” in 2019 and a string of memoirs by Raybon focused on faith, race and family.
For Fajardo-Anstine, “Woman of Light” was a labor of love a decade in the making. The story follows several generations of an Indigenous Chicano family living in Colorado, and is based on stories that she grew up hearing about from her own family elders about many of her ancestors, who migrated to Denver from Southern Colorado in the 1920s.
She worked for years on the novel, taking a break to publish “Sabrina & Corina,” which became a bestseller. She said that the success of the short story collection helped to build an audience for “Woman of Light” and gave her the financial support to focus more fully on the novel.
Now out in the world for about a month, she said the reception has been everything she dreamed of, especially from Coloradans. Many readers have told her that the novel makes them feel seen as Chicanos in Colorado in a way that they never have before.
“I’m really proud I get to present this Colorado to the nation,” she said.
Fajardo-Anstine said she was inspired by Toni Morrison’s “Beloved,” which taught her “how to research and think of my characters and their lives in historical context.” To make the novel feel lived-in and realistic to its time period she did an immense amount of historical research, from interviewing her family members to pouring through the archives of the Western History Collection at the Denver Public Library.
For one scene in the novel where a Klan rally marches through the streets in Denver in an act of intimidation, she looked at real KKK robes DPL has in its archives, along with pamphlets and other artifacts from the hate group. But the Klan’s history in Denver wasn’t just an abstraction to her — her great grandmother and aunt told her their own stories about living through Klan rule and having to hide during cross burnings.
At the height of the KKK’s power in the 1920s over 35,000 Coloradans belonged to the organization and Colorado had the second most powerful Klan operation in the country after Indiana, according to “Hooded Empire: The Ku Klux Klan in Colorado” by Robert Alan Goldberg. The KKK’s power was strongest in Denver, where it exploited people’s fears of rising crime during Prohibition and antipathy toward Catholics, Jews and immigrants to gain political power.
Patricia Raybon first rose to prominence detailing the experiences of Black Coloradans in later decades, particularly in her stunning 1997 memoir “My First White Friend,” which details her family’s discriminatory and, at times, isolating experiences while she was growing up in Denver in the 1950s and 60s. But for her first book of fiction, she drew from earlier Colorado history.
“All That Is Secret” was published in October by Christian publishing house Tyndale, and is the first
in a planned series of three mystery novels following amateur detective Annalee Spain. In 1923, Spain is living in Chicago and struggling with the pressures of being the first Black professor at her Bible college when she receives word that her father, a preacher from Denver who died under mysterious circumstances a year earlier, may have been murdered.
Spain returns to the city to get to the bottom of the matter. She discovers her father’s death was tied up in political machinations, which prompts more questions than answers and runs her afoul of the city’s political elite — and the Klan.
Raybon was drawn to writing about 1920s Denver because she thought it would be a good backdrop for a thriller. The book isn’t about the Klan, but their presence heightens the stakes for her characters.
“For fictional purposes, the Klan turn out to be the ideal threat,” she said.
Like Fajardo-Anstine, she took advantage of the Denver Public Library’s history collections to research the time period. She also used digital archives to sift through Colorado newspapers, church bulletins, oral histories and other primary sources to help her understand what it was like to live in the state during that era.
Mysteries are her favorite genre for leisure reading, and Raybon said she had always dreamed of writing a novel. She wrote one 10 years ago that got put on a shelf, but during lockdown in 2020 she dusted off the draft, which ultimately became “All That Is Secret.” She was able to bring courage to the manuscript that she didn’t have 10 years ago, she said, which gave the story the life it needed.
“Looking back, I was worried then about what people would say about nice Pat Raybon writing this mystery with murder and romance and intrigue,” she said. “But during the pandemic those kinds of questions were irrelevant.”

Long before Aurora was a city, before Colorado was a state and before pioneers ventured across the West, 20 million to 30 million bison roamed the land. Then came the settlers, and extinction for the native grazers neared. The Lakota people called bison “tatanka,” which were an important symbol to the indigenous peoples’ culture. As a part of the Aurora History Museum’s “Mosaic of Cultures: Aurora’s Mexican Community” Artist Arturo Garcia, who was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and now owns a studio in Denver, captures the relationship between the bison and the people who first called this land home through a series of paintings. “This exhibition tells the visual story of a significant event in our nation’s history, and I am grateful to have Mr. Garcia’s work on display to share with our museum visitors,” museum director T. Scott Williams says of the exhibition.

Who’s hungry? I am. Putting pen to paper in the wee hours of Monday morning, all this hack can think about is crushing some Q. And while I’m no KD Lang fan, I do have constant cravings for the delicacy that is BBQ. If you suffer from the same affliction, July 9 may bring some respite to curb those desires for all the smoked meats. The 6th Annual Brew-N-Que Festival will host local barbecue vendors, as well as other culinary treats like shaved ice and churros. Not only will there be an opportunity to gluttonize yourselves with smacking sweet sauce covered pork, chicken and beef, you can mimic a Southern version of Bacchus and throw frosty barley pops down your gullet. And as Itis is real, you’ll inevitably need a seat and maybe a nap, so chairs and blankets are welcome. Sadly you can’t go full-blown REM cycle, so leave the tents and canopies at home.
Now through July 23. Open noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. Register for tickets as www.museo.org.
How should La Malinche be remembered? An enslaved Aztec girl, Le Malinche was multilingual and therefore a crucial part of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés’ brutal takeover of Mesoamerica. There are few records, especially from her point of view, that provide insight into the mind of La Malinche, but her legacy has become somewhat of an artistic endeavor. A major installation of inspired work at the Denver Art Museum and also now Museo De Las Americas invites the community in to decide for themselves what kind of emotion the infamous name should evoke. “If we remove the patriarchal lens and Eurocentric vantage, what we confront is a powerful presence, a woman that survived and overcame adversity,” writes curators at Museo De Las Americas. “Malinalli on the Rocks” is on display until late July. For the Arapahoe County Fair (July 28-31) throw on a pair of boots and hit the rodeo or relive that old time rock n’ roll with a Bob Seger tribute on Friday night. Up north, in Adams County, put the pie baking contest and auction on your calendar (Aug. 4). First prize is $100 and a ribbon, but really, we’re all winners in the presence of a homemade cherry pie. At Douglas County’s fair (July 31-Aug. 8), enjoy a farm-to-table brunch, a car show and a dueling piano performance. Truly something for everybody.

Aurora Public Library summer reading and brewery tours

Sure, summer is for playing outside until it gets dark out, but sometimes when the mercury reaches the top of the thermometer and it’s too hot to run around the best way to stay entertained is to curl up in an air-conditioned spot with a good book. You can get prizes for doing just that by signing up for the Aurora Public Library’s summer reading program. This year’s program, which has the nautical theme “Summer of Imagination: Dive Into Reading,” runs through July 31 and is open to kids, teens and the young at heart. Register online or pick up a reading log at your local library branch. And for the older readers, nothing goes with a good book quite like a cold beer. APL’s got your back with the 6th annual craft brew tour. Pick up a passport or download one online, and after you’ve collected a stamp from five local breweries (participants include Cheluna, Dry Dock, Lady Justice and more) return to the library to receive a free glass. Cheers!
Whatever kind of art you’re into, there’s a good chance you can find it at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, which takes place on the first weekend in July. More than 250 artists were chosen for the festival out of 1,700 artist applicants, including Aurora-based artist Michael Magrin. The Western landscape artist specializes in the clouded skies that are so easy to get caught up in here in Colorado. Find him at booth 123. Ceramic, fiber and glass artists also accompany the more traditional drawing and painting mediums at the festival. Food and music round out the weekend. If you miss it, plan ahead for the Stanley Arts Festival in September. Find those details also at Cherry Creek Arts Festival website.
Explore the High Plains
The Fox’s next season doesn’t start until the fall, but there are still some summer happenings to tide you through the live theater drought if you missed out on tickets to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (they sell quick!). Coming up first is a special two-night performance by Motones & The Jerseys August 6th and 7th. Following on the heels of a national tour, the nine-signer six-piece band lineup will perform nearly 50 of the 20th century’s greatest hits in an interactive sing-off, including classics from Tina Turner, The Temptations, The Beach Boys and more. Near the end of the summer, the Fox will be having its first gala since the pandemic began on Sept. 17 at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club. The night will include a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, dinner,a live and silent auction and a special performance by Denver’s Black Iris Collective. The theme is “Speakeasy,” so come dressed in your best 20s garb (1920s, that is). And for the impatient, season tickets are on sale now for the Fox’s 38th season, which will include Treasure Island the Musical, the play adaptation of Joan Didion’s stunning memoir The Year of Magical Thinking and more.

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are a sight to behold, but there’s a special kind of beauty about the High Plains. If you hail from Aurora’s eastern neighborhoods, you understand. Late in the day, the pronghorn will emerge for a bit before bedding down for the night. Tall grasses bob in the breeze. The sky looks bluer off in the distance. The plains are an acquired taste, but you’re here, so might as well enjoy it. The easiest way to explore the High Plains is to plan a visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Plains Conservation Center, where you’ll learn more about the diverse ecosystem, how homesteaders were able to make this land their home and the people who were here before them on the 1,100 acres of shortgrass prairie. Wagon tours and pioneer programs are on the agenda all summer long at the Aurora site. In July, you can delve a little deeper into your plains appreciation for a wildflower walk on July 9, a full moon hike on July 13 and a butterfly walk on July 15.
Catch an elusive ice cream truck
If you’ve heard the jingle and rushed to the edge of the driveway to buy a bomb pop anywhere east of Havana Street, no you didn’t. Well, maybe you did. But you might want to keep that information private. Ice cream trucks aren’t technically legal in Aurora (yet). Some local lawmakers are hoping to thaw the ban on the city “nuisances” as part of an effort to reduce “red tape” within the city. A repeal is working its way through the city council as we speak. The ban has been in place since 1957, so if you’ve happened upon an ice cream truck — or rather, it has happened upon you — consider yourself lucky. Plus, the ice cream you aren’t supposed to have always tastes the best. If you live by the rules, however, we suggest: Sweet Cow in Stanley Marketplace, Milkroll Creamery on Havana Street or any of the snow bowls at Snowl, which has two locations in Aurora now.

Pride month is over but don’t hang up your rainbow flags just yet — if you didn’t get enough glitter and sun damage for one summer at Denver Pride this past weekend, be sure not to miss Aurora Pride. Held in August at the Aurora Reservoir, the celebration is by and for Aurora’s LGBTQ+ community but is open to anyone who has a heart for equality and is looking to have fun at the beach before warm summer days are once again gone for the year. Tickets are free and can be reserved online, with parking passes ranging from $10 to $30 in advance and $10-$40 day of. Along with event upkeep the money goes towards scholarships for LGBTQ+ Aurorans pursuing higher education so that’s one more reason to dust off the beach towels — after all, it’s all for a good cause.

Summer means fresh produce is in stock at Aurora farmers markets, and two of the city’s most popular seasonal markets are open now at Southlands Shopping Center and Stanley Marketplace. Spend a laid-back morning or post-work afternoon shopping for fresh fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies, breads, hand-made crafts and other items. Afterward, stop by Three Little Griddles for brunch or savor a cold brew at Cheluna Brewing Company. ALL-AURORA BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The boys volleyball state tournament took place in Aurora this season and not surprisingly, the top talent across the city converged at Overland High School as Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest and Regis Jesuit were among the final eight teams.
Stars from the Cougars, Raptors and Raiders combine to make up the membership of the top unit of the 2022 SentinelColoradoBoys Volleyball Team, which is selected by the Sentinel in conjunction with balloting of city coaches.
BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports EditorIn its second season as a sport sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association, boys volleyball spread to more schools in Aurora and the level of play improve from the beginning of the season to the end.
Coming off appearances in last year’s state tournament, Cherokee Trail and Eaglecrest both came into the season with high expectations given the skill and experience that returned. The Cougars and Raptors spilt a pair of matches during the regular season and both came in right behind Cherry Creek in the Centennial League standings. Each navigated regional tournaments on their home floors as well to earn state berths.
Coach Chad Bond’s Eaglecrest team earned a handful of spots on the All-Aurora Team through players who were known and others who made a
Maiava easily led Aurora area players with 644 assists in 83 sets play (7.8 per set), all while spending some time hitting, during which he piled up 163 kills that left him just outside of the top 10 in the league in that category. The Central Christian College signee added 51 aces. Shaw racked up 3.4 kills per set (265 total in 79 sets, which ranked fourth in the league), while he also had the third-most digs among league players and also formed a strong leadership duo with Maiava, while Ancheta had far and away the most digs of any Aurora-area player (310, which led the Centennial League), while he also registered 33 service aces in 82 sets played.
Bond, however, credited the rapid improvement of senior middles Ikechukwu Onwuegbu and Kingsley Umoelin for his team’s ability to be a contender and the duo proved to be the best among any at the net in the city as they combined for nearly 300 kills, while Onwuebgu was third in the Centennial League with 56 blocks.
Cherokee Trail coach Mike Thomsen also had a trio of All-Centennial League first team picks in senior setter Caden Cole, senior outside hitter Hudson Harms and sophomore John Clinton, all which earned all-league recognition for a second year in a row and formed a large part of the nucleus of a team that won 18 matches.
Harms (an Arizona Christian University signee) is a repeat all-league first team selection who finished third in the league with 282 kills (3.4 per set), while he also registered 171 digs in 83 sets to rank in the top five in that category as well. He combined with Clinton to form a dynamic offensive

SOFTBALL
Aurora welcomes back Fireworks tournament
Competitive high school softball’s local rite of summer returns with Triple Crown’s Fireworks Tournament, which begins June 28 at venues all around Aurora.
The Aurora Sports Park is the fulcrum of the event that is run concurrently with the Sparkler Tournament with competition and special events taking place in multiple age groups through July 3.
Already completed is the second edition of the TC International Challenge, which featured 28 teams (9 U16 and 19 U18) that included players who were born in the United States who had family ties with other countries and tried out to represent them in the tournament.
The U18 tournament included a couple of Aurora area representatives, as Gabi and Izzy Giroux of Smoky Hill were part of Team Canada. Izzy Giroux just graduated after starring for the Buffs and Gabi Giroux is expected to be one Smoky Hill’s key pieces in the fall.
The Fireworks and Sparkler events also bring together hundreds of coaches from college programs of all sizes who also ran camps prior to the start of the the tournament. The combination of the two give players on the teams in attendance a great chance to get exposure for potential scholarship offers.
BOYS SWIMMING
Regis Jesuit, Smoky Hill swimmers earn NISCA
All-American honors
Improving on a season that already included the program’s 23rd all-time state championship, the Regis Jesuit boys swim team captured three relay and one individual
duo for Cherokee Trail, as Clinton was the Centennial League leader with 328 kills, which ranked him second in the state. Clinton added 41 service aces. Making use of those weapons for the Cougars was Cole, a signee with Division I Sacred Heart, who averaged 8.9 assists per set (with a total of 523 that ranked him third in the Centennial League).
Regis Jesuit was the only team that pulled off an upset in any of the eight regional tournaments, but coach Kristi Gauss’ team had abundant talent. Leading the way for the Raiders was senior outside hitter Tristan Christofferson, clearly one of the state’s most explosive players on the attack. He racked up 23 kills in the Raiders’ regional upset of Thornton and nearly led them to victory over top-seeded Cherry Creek in the opening match of state. Christofferson is headed to Vassar.

All-American honor for the 2022 season from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA).
NISCA released its list of verified top-100 times in the country for the season and among them were all three relay teams for coach Nick Frasersmith’s Regis Jesuit team — which captured the Class 5A state championship — plus senior Gio Aguirre, while Smoky Hill sophomore Daniel Yi also earned an individual accolade.
The Raiders’ lone event state championship at the 5A meet came
Regis Jesuit all qualified for the Class 5A state playoffs and Rangeview made the 4A postseason with help from a growing pool of talented players that continue to make the area stronger in the sport.
Those programs provide much of the talent on the 2022 Sentinel ColoradoAll-Aurora Boys Lacrosse Team, which is picked by the Sentinelwith balloting of local coaches.
Regis Jesuit made it to the 5A semifinals before it suffered a gut-wrenching one-goal loss to Mountain Vista. The Raiders were strong defensively as usual and had some key offensive weapons, which were led by senior Logan White, who ranked second in 5A with 90 points (66 goals, 24 assists), while junior Fletcher Sullivan (31 goals, 13 assists plus good work in the faceoff circle) and senior Charlie Denlinger (both 5A All-State first team picks) led a strong midfield.
In the net, junior Spencer Day had the ninth-lowest goals against average in the state of 6.330, plus the best save percentage in Aurora
in the 400 yard freestyle relay from the team of seniors Aguirre and Mack Dugan and juniors Ronan Krauss and Hawkins Wendt. That group clocked a time of 3 minutes, 3.69 seconds, which ended up ranking it 20th in the country. Wendt and fellow junior Carter Anderson plus seniors Luke Dinges and Jacob Sykora earned All-American status in the 200 yard medley relay with the 53rd fast time in the country of 1:32.68, while the 200 yard freestyle team of Aguirre, Dugan, Wendt and Anderson were

For the second straight season, Grandview had the most prolific offensive player in the state in John Alie, who racked up a state-best 113 points as a senior. The Bellarmine-bound attackman tallied 73 goals and had 40 assists. Joe Alie, a sophomore, racked up 45 goals as well and scored 66 points. In the faceoff circle, senior Nicolas Logue had the city’s best win percentage (.607) plus 121 groundballs.
Cherokee Trail (which won its playoff opener) had an All-State first team midfielder in Evan Gibbs who tied with Sullivan for the most goals from that position among local players with 31. He is a University of Tampa Bay signee.
Rangeview lost its opening round playoff contest, but had a very strong season thanks to a strong core. Part of that core was junior J’Vion Bunch, who finished 15 points off Alie’s pace for the state lead in
best time of 56.25 seconds was the 96th-fastest in the nation.
GIRLS SWIMMING

Individually, Aguirre (a signee with the U.S. Naval Academy) could not repeat as 100 yard freestyle state champions, but he joined the only swimmer to finish in front of hiim (Chatfield’s Tristen Davin) as an All-American. He finished with a time of 45.12 that put him in a tie for 86th in the country.
Smoky Hill’s fantastic season included plenty of highlights from Yi, who capped off his sophomore year with an All-American performance in the 100 yard breaststroke. Yi’s
Coach Nick Frasersmith’s 200 yard medley relay team of Sophia Frei, Emma Weber, Allie Sanchez and Grace Dale was only the third-fastest at the Class 5A state meet, but it was the eighth-fastest in the entire nation with a top time of 1:41.28.
