here’s only one thing worse for gun-loving Republicans gnashing their teeth at Aurora Democratic Congressperson Jason Crow over his credibility and his honored bronze star tenure as an Army Ranger.

“We’ve known for a very long time that Lauren Boebert doesn’t know what she’s doing and is not interested in legislating or even knowing the issues and knowing the facts, but it becomes increasingly clear the level of her depravity, which is deep,” Crow told reporters after Boebert’s infamous March 1 tantrum during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address.

It came as an edict from a position of authority here in Colorado and inside the U.S. Capitol. It’s so damn awkward for a party that worships all things vets and cops to try and find a way to demurely hate on them when they carpet bomb stuff like absolute gun rights.

But worse than having someone like Crow confidently evaporate so much Republican extremist bilge with a cool head and a bronze star, is for Crow to take aim and get a bullseye in the most sacred of GOP daemon: the Second Amendment.

As newspapers like The Sentinel struggle to keep track of the number of victims of mass shootings now racking up like the fleeting totals on a premium gasoline pump, Crow took the time last week to insert himself in the cacophony of GOP extremists trying to justify how their right to build home and hip armories supersedes everyone’s right not not have their children shot to death at school or fall victim to another mass shooter at the grocery store.

Far beyond inane and annoying, the NRA and GOP tripping over their own anointed “good guy with a gun,” and passionate pleas to virtually expand TSA security lines to all of the nation’s 135,000 public schools, was Colorado’s own Congressperson Ken Buck. On Twitter, he preened with his over-the-top insistence that assault rifles are just plain ol’ normal guns and that, “In rural Colorado, an AR-15 is a gun of choice for killing raccoons before they get to our chickens.”

Set aside, just briefly, that this guy, born of New York lawyers, himself a

product of Princeton law school, and who lived in Greeley — home of the University of Northern Colorado and the mega-meat-corporation that owns the Colorado Rockies — thinks that city is “rural.” Buck thinks all that is genuine basis for his creds to speak for people in Colorado who really do live in far-flung rural places.

I’m from Manzanola, Colorado, a town I considered an urban Mecca over nearby bergs like Swink and Olney Springs, which actually had rural route mail boxes plugged on dirt roads.

But even along the wilds of the Rocky Ford Ditch and endless plains surrounding Lake Henry, I can’t recall anyone around there who wouldn’t be insulted by some guy in Greeley trying to persuade the world that rural Coloradans are the creepy, stupid hillbillies he makes them out to be.

Dude. You can actually build a chicken coop in Karval or a backyard in the Denver Highlands that’ll keep raccoons out. You clearly don’t know that raccoons come out after dark, when you have no damn business shooting at anything, and especially with a rifle and rounds that are so explosive that they’ll make a child shot to death in a classroom unrecognizable to even their own parents.

Dude. You don’t need a semi-automatic assault rifle to stay alive and collecting eggs in Vroman or anywhere. Get a dog. Maybe a broom and some chicken wire that won’t leave tens of thousands of innocent mass murder victims shot and dead at the end of each year.

Buck and his NRA cronies expect that kind of stuff from me, which they wave away as just the “lame-stream”

liberals in the media who just don’t get guns.

But they can’t wave away Crow, who almost overnight released his own video, calling “bull” on the GOP argument that assault rifles are just plain ol’ guns that should have a place in every American heart and hearth.

“I spent most of my life around guns,” Crow says in his video. “Hunting as a kid, fighting for this country as an Army Ranger, and even now as a gun owner. The American people deserve some truth, and here it is.”

So he shows a deer-hunting rifle, and how it’s built for and used for hunting big game.

Then he shows an assault rifle, explaining how semi-automatic rifles with explosive rounds are created and used in military battle.

“This nonsense about using AR15s for ranching or home defense is a sales pitch by the gun lobby. Don’t be fooled, ranchers don’t fight armed platoons of raccoons. And if you say you need an AR-15 to protect your home, you’re just not shooting straight.”

That’s it. Short and sweet. Right from the mouth of a decorated military veteran that is the extremist GOP’s worst nightmare, a decorated veteran who says we can live with sensible limitations on the Second Amendment.

Crow makes it clear we don’t have to live in fear of being slaughtered by armed mass shooters who are enabled by leaders confused about rural Colorado, assault weapons and how to keep varmints out of the hen house.

APD chief must also focus on traffic deaths, police reform

City officials putting out the word that there’s a new sheriff in town — although he is actually the old police chief — are remiss in pointing out that Aurora’s old, critical problems in the police department have not magically gone away.

This week, former Aurora police chief Dan Oates became interim Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates as the city begins a nationwide search for a permanent police department leader.

Aurora had one of those — slogging through seemingly endless astounding controversies involving malfeasance, malevolence and corruption — until the city manager fired her in April.

The killing, maiming and abuse of Black people, drunken passed-out cops in squad cars, rehired racists and pistol-whipping episodes eventually drew a state investigation and resulted in a consent decree between Aurora, its police and fire departments and the Colorado attorney general’s office.

The decree mandates that a third-party expert monitor Aurora’s well-documented problems that reach all the way back to Oates’ first tenure as police chief.

For decades, the Aurora Police Department has been a cloaked, insular, virtually autonomous agency that’s been primarily led by overpowering police union and civil service commission pressures.

Oates himself gleaned national exposure about the problem after penning an essay about two years ago for the Washington Post, insisting that police chiefs must have the power and courage to fire errant cops to ensure police departments remain credible and viable institutions.

Now-former police chief Vanessa Wilson not only talked the talk. She acted on all that, firing and upholding the dismissal of police officers who clearly committed fireable offenses.

Those unapologetic firings endeared Wilson to the community, making it clear she took police reform and accountability seriously, and they made her a prime target for the wrath of police union leaders.

City Manager Jim Twombly, who solely has the power to fire the police chief, said union angst was not why he sacked Wilson, citing her allegedly poor management skills instead.

In a recent Sentinel Colorado interview with Oates, as he steps into his new, temporary role as police chief, he listed things he’ll likely focus on until a new chief is selected.

Foremost, he told The Sentinel last week, he wants to bring stability to the police department, a department that, like hundreds of others, has seen a steady flow of exists since about the time the George Floyd murder controversy erupted.

Oates also talked about the spike in car thefts, other property crimes and the notable surge in violence.

These are problems not just in Aurora, but all over the metro area, and even all across the nation.

His tentatively mentioning directed police units and analyzing responses are best practices that make sense.

But missing from his short list of priorities is assuring the community that Wilson’s focus on police reform and leading changes imposed by the consent decree, rather than just accommodating them, will continue, at least until another chief is selected.

Also missing from Oates’ list of must-dos is addressing the surge in traffic crashes, injuries and deaths.

There were more than 600 traffic deaths in Colorado last year, and 2022 could surpass that, according to indicators. Traffic crashes have risen at an astonishing rate over the past two years, about 15% just since one year ago, according to state traffic officials.

It takes no analysis at all to understand that Aurora and the entire metro area is flooded with extremely dangerous, rogue drivers who weave and speed through traffic at all hours and under all circumstances.

National traffic safety experts say the rogue racer phenomenon is a national one.

While history and research make clear that police can do little to prevent violent and even property crime, other than respond to it after it happens, police and traffic authorities actually can move the needle against traffic criminals and scofflaws in a variety of ways: cameras, patrols and special operations.

Oates’ arrival and interest among city council members underscores something lost on too many lawmakers: police have little impact on preventing crime. Their primary job is to address crimes professionally, safely, fairly and legally.

Since there have been a serious and infamous lapse in those priorities and abilities among some police and police leaders in the past, all of Aurora anxiously awaits how Oates will handle that crisis until the next chief is appointed.

Anti-tech bills could stall innovation

Innovation has long been a bedrock of American progress. For our communities to grow and develop, it has been the entrepreneurial and creative minds pursuing new ideas and opportunities that have driven us forward.

In no industry has this been proven more true than with technology, which has made leaps and bounds in the past several decades to improve all aspects of our communities. As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats, and the rising tide of tech has been a service to us all in many ways.

Particularly when we were in the shadow of the pandemic, online tools and services became essential for how our businesses could operate, and even how many of us interacted with friends and loved ones. The simplicity and accessibility of online platforms has made business operations smoother and our interactions far more convenient.

It would be difficult to go back to the time when we couldn’t contact one another at the click of a button, order an item we need to be delivered within days, or market our business all across the globe.

Beyond this, here in Colorado and across the country, tech has played a critical role in driving new job growth and encouraging the pursuit of ideas far beyond what we might’ve thought possible. As tech hubs grow in our cities, so too do the job opportunities available to our friends and the capabilities of our business. It’s critical that we keep this growth going to chart a positive path forward.

To do that, support from our government is essential, as is recognition of the positive partnership tech companies and their services have on the operations of our cities.

This would seem obvious, and yet certain Representatives in Congress have found their way to debating legislation that could hamper the ability of tech companies to provide the tools our communities have been benefitting from. These proposals are a misguided attempt to “help consumers” that would instead have adverse effects on the capabilities of our cities.

The South Metro Chamber has long been working toward the goal of helping businesses prosper, and these proposed pieces of legislation are

a step in the wrong direction for achieving that ideal. When working hand in hand with technology companies and the services they provide, our business community can improve its strength, sustainability, and value to the Denver area.

We’ve all watched the tumultuous state of our economy these past few years, why should we allow policies that could introduce even greater disruption? The attention should be on efforts to continue steadying our economic trajectory.

Technology plays an important role in taking all our cities, towns, and communities where we want them to go. If we restrict the companies that provide us with these tools and services, we would be doing a disservice to ourselves and each other.

It’s critical that Congress remember their focus should be on policies that drive us forward, not to restrict our growth and potential.

PERRY: The Sentinel is changing so we can keep it the same — local

It’s no overstatement to say that without a free and responsible press, there would be no democracy.

Democracy is the word we throw around to describe all the self-government that looks out for all of us, equally, even when the people we choose to lead us miss the mark.

The Sentinel is changing this week, primarily because a group of people understand this newspaper’s critical role in preserving a healthy democracy in the community and the region.

SentinelColoradogets new ownership structure to ensure control and focus remain local

In an effort to move The Sentinel toward a unique model of local ownership, a consortium of journalism preservationists have created a temporary holding company to take control of the Aurora-focused media company.

“Local journalism needs to be rooted in the community, made by and for people who live there. As someone who was raised in a place that lost its hometown newspaper, I’m committed to providing a bridge for others to stand up for protecting access to a free press,” said Joaquin Alvarado, founder of the consultancy Studiotobe, who is helping shepherd The Sentinel ’s transition.

Data from the University of North Carolina published in 2019 found that 1,400 towns and cities across the nation have lost a newspaper over the past 15 years, many of those communities are either rural, low-income or have an aging population.

The reason why The Sentinel journalists, and journalists around the world, make democracy work is because even the best of people, even under the best of circumstances, are only at their best when they know they’re being watched and judged.

That’s just how people are.

And journalism makes democracy work because the worst of people do the worst possible things while assuming they won’t be found out or held accountable.

The lack of transparency and accountability wielded by a free press is what makes it possible for dictators like Vladimir Putin to lie effortlessly to his citizens to kill Ukrainians and his own soldiers with impunity.

The power of a free press, and the critical need for it, isn’t just an issue of national and international proportions. The lives we all want to live depend on democracy working at the state Capitol, on school boards, city councils, district courts, county jails and at every other level of government and business.

Trusted newspapers like The Sentinel tell you, and everyone, the things you need to know that some people in power want to hide.

Reports, editors and photographers have been diligently doing it here for more than a century.

In the last election, some school board candidates for Cherry Creek Schools tried to conceal the extremist groups supporting them and even their own bizarre and dangerous views on the role of government in education.

The Sentinel has been right there with you and for you when gang violence erupted in the 1980s and police began abusing Black teenagers in a misguided overreaction to addressing gang problems.

The Sentinel has told you when city lawmakers egregiously used their offices for their personal gain.

The Sentinel was there for you as the Aurora theater shooting unfolded, and a platoon of writers, photographers and editors have offered the Aurora region nuance and dedication to the story no one else comes close to.

When other media quickly moved on from the death of Elijah McClain in 2019, The Sentinel continually pressed for information in story after story.

The Sentinel has repeatedly forced even national officials to come clean on the treatment and mistreatment of mostly Latino immigrants held in a detention center in Aurora.

The Sentinel has brought hundreds of thousands of readers stories about an army of high school athletes when they’ve been victorious and crushed by defeat.

Like thousands of newspapers across the nation, The Sentinel has long been the nexus for culture, crime, education, celebration, diversity, governance, horror, equity, weirdness and everything that makes Aurora the unique and amazing place it is.

For almost 20 years, we’ve offered you a close look at the world outside your door, and as members of the Associated Press and other collaborations, a close look at key events around the world. Every. Single. Day.

But like so many newspapers, the internet and social media have

disrupted the way we fund our critical role in Aurora.

Paid advertisement, the lifeblood of journalistic media, has been drained away by companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, cable and streaming TV, Yahoo and many, many more. Those ad dollars now support a fraction of the news and journalism newspapers used to create.

That kind of economic pounding has decimated newsrooms across the region and the country, including ours.

All this, compounded by the pandemic, pushed The Sentinel, and so many papers like it, to the brink. More than 1,400 cities and towns like Aurora have seen their news source pushed over the edge in the last 15 years, we write today in a story about The Sentinel’s transformation.

Despite challenges that make me weary even to describe, The Sentinel has continued to turn out the trusted, critical news and features the region needs and deserves. Every. Single. Day.

We’re going to keep doing that, thanks to a growing group of people and organizations that understand the critical role newspapers like The Sentinel and others have. The Colorado News Collaborative, which The Sentinel is part of, and that organization’s consultant, Joaquin Alvarado, a longtime national innovator in journalism, are helping The Sentinel create a new way forward.

What this will look like in the end is being mapped out even as I write this. We’ve created a holding company, The Colorado Journalism Investment Group, to allow our readers, the community, and people who appreciate journalism and the role Aurora and The Sentinel play in the region, an opportunity to create a unique structure to ensure The Sentinel’s long term viability and success.

There will be much more news on this process as it unfolds during the next few months.

Many of you already have played a strategic part in this by generously providing contributions that have allowed us to keep performing our crucial role in the region. I’ve read every note, every message, every “thanks for what you do” that you’ve scribbled on the back of envelopes, on cards and the memo line of every check you’ve sent.

Now, I get to say, “thanks” back, and tell you how your emotional and community support have buoyed us here even more than your needed dollars.

Thanks to this extraordinary effort among you, the Colorado Journalism Investment Group and others, we’ll be here to thank you in writing — today and every day going forward.

Follow @EditorDavePerry on Twitter and Facebook or reach him at 303750-7555 or dperry@SentinelColorado.com

Among that statistic is Alvarado’s hometown paper in Oakland, California. It shuttered in 2016 with no input from the community or journalists at the organization.

“TheSentinel is a critical resource for Aurora, and we’re going to preserve local control and ownership for future generations,” said Alvarado, who has now been involved in several projects aimed at keeping local news as close to the community as possible.

Alvarado founded the Colorado Journalism Investment Group for the purpose of holding the company so that Sentinel Colorado and the community can plan the next steps for the outlet.

The holding company evolved from work Alvarado is doing with COLab, the Colorado News Collaborative, said Laura Frank, the organization’s executive director. COLab is a statewide nonprofit focused on helping news outlets become stronger. COLab partners with more than 170 news outlets across Colorado, including TheSentinel. The paper is about to begin its 115th year of publication.

“Journalism leaders and community members in Colorado are finding ways to change the narrative and the trajectory of failing news outlets,” Frank said. “Together, we are making journalism stronger, which makes democracy stronger. I’m thrilled CO-

Lab can help support that work.”

The transition highlights a growing movement to save local journalism organizations — namely from being bought up by giant corporations, controlled by profit-driven hedge funds that are known for gutting newspapers in the process of slashing costs — and help them operate in a way that continues to benefit the community.

Such efforts of community funding have seen success across the country, including in Washington where Microsoft backed an effort to raise $1 million annually for the YakimaFreePress, owned by the SeattleTimes, to support and grow the news organization.

Seattle Times President Alan Fisco is a firm believer in the community funding model after watching it play out in Yakima, where the organization plans to hire four reporters by the end of the year.

“The sky’s the limit,” he said, highlighting that there are numerous funding models that aren’t strictly reliant on advertising revenue. The Pew Research Center estimated in 2020 that newspapers saw a 25% drop in advertising from the previous year — making it the first year in the organization’s data that circulation revenue was higher than advertising revenue.

The Sentinel staff will remain intact through the transition, and Dave Perry, who’s

been with the organization since 1993, will continue to serve as editor and publisher. The Sentinel ’s online daily website, two daily email updates and the weekly print edition will continue to publish throughout the change.

“This is an inspiring change not just for The Sentinel , but for papers and news outlets like ours across the nation,” Perry said. “It allows us to remain focused on the news that matters most to our readers, and at the same time work to find sustainable financial models for us and others. This is a critical opportunity at a critical time for journalism.

“What’s not changing is The Sentinel ’s commitment to our readers and the region’s advertisers for providing unblinking coverage of the news and features the community expects and needs,” he said.

Now-former Sentinel owner James Gold, who bought the publication in 2011, has launched BlueLena, a national business focused on news operation sustainability. Gold said he wanted to work with COLab to transfer ownership of The Sentinel so that it could be both locally controlled and serve as a “laboratory for best practices” for other Colorado newsrooms.

Details of the transition to a permanent Sentinel ownership structure will be forthcoming over the summer.

Word:

VIKRAM RAJU IS SECOND TO NONE FOR HIS PASSION FOR LEARNING

Epaulement. Toquilla. Parison.

Those are some of the words that Vikram Raju of Aurora spelled in the lightning-round tiebreaker of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, where he reached second place in a competition that initially included 11 million students.

The final 234 competitors gathered last week for the national competition in Washington, D.C. where Harini Logan, an eighth grader from San Antonio, came away with the grand prize.

“It was very surreal, and we are so proud of him for coming this far,” said Raju’s mother Sandhya Ayyar.

Raju, who just completed seventh grade at Aurora Quest K-8, competed at the nationals in 2019 and 2021 as well, where he tied for 51st and 21st place respectively. He was one of three Colorado students to make it to the bee this year along with Tejas Raman and Zoe Keith of Boulder, who tied for 23rd and 32nd place.

Raju said that from a very young age he was interested in word patterns, and what made words sound the same even when they’re spelled differently. He won his first school spelling bee in third grade. He started to take spelling seriously in sixth grade when he won the Colorado State Spelling Bee.

He studies by learning root words and analyzing language patterns to piece together how words from different origins are spelled. His favorite word is the tongue-twisting “Houyhnhnm,” a fictional race of intelligent horses from Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels.” On school days he usually studies for two to three hours, and four hours a day on weekends.

“It’s a lot of hard work and studying that you have to put in, but it’s really worth it,” he said.

The 2022 bee was the first fully in-person bee since the start of the pandemic, and Raju said that it was definitely his favorite so far. He especially enjoyed getting to make friends with so many other kids who loved spelling as much

as he does.

When it started, Raju didn’t have any expectations for how far he would make it in the competition.

“I just wanted to go in and try my best and have fun,” he said.

Watching the competition was nerve-wracking, Ayyar said. She couldn’t imagine how stressful it was for him, because just watching him spell was hard for the family. At one point his younger brother, Vedanth, got so anxious he had to leave the room.

“He was like, ‘I cannot watch this, I’m going to leave the auditorium,’” Ayyar said. “And other people in the audience were like ‘please give him a hug,’ and I’m like, I need a hug!”

As the week went on, Raju moved up higher and higher, making it through the quarterfinals and then the semifinals.

In the finals he made it through 11 rounds, and then after he and Logan each misspelled several words in a row the competition moved to a spell-off tiebreaker, where each contestant had to try and spell as many words correctly as possible in 90 seconds.

It was the first time in Scripps history that the spell-off was used, after a number of the previous years have had co-champions (the 2019 bee ended in an eight-way tie). Raju spelled 15 words correctly in the allotted time to Logan’s 21. Initially, the defeat was a blow.

“I was just an inch away from victory, so I did feel really disappointed in that moment,” he said. “But after that I kind of realized that it’s not the end of the world, and I still did really great.”

Raju still has one more year of eligibility and said he definitely plans to come back to nationals in eighth grade, but he isn’t going to pressure himself.

“I just want to give it one last chance and see how far I can get without any expectations,” he said.

His parents praised him for his upbeat attitude.

“We left it to him if he wants to continue his spelling journey; it takes a lot of time and effort,” Raju’s father, Srikanth Raju, said.

“He’s not the type who dwells too much on the results because he just loves to continue the spelling journey.”

Raju received a $25,000 cash prize for coming in second, which will arrive in the mail soon. He said he plans to save part of the money for college, where he hopes to study science or medicine, and donate part of it to causes he cares about, such as environmental issues and teenage mental health and addiction (and maybe save a little bit for something fun).

After the finals, Raju had the opportunity to meet Jacques Bailly, the official pronouncer for the spelling bee and a Colorado native, and to tour the White House, which he said was an amazing ex-

perience. The family also went sightseeing in D.C., where they visited the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the Planet Word museum, which Raju missed out on going to with other contestants during the week of the competition because he was too busy studying.

Raju made quite a splash in D.C., Ayyar said. People recognized him on the street and asked him for photos and autographs. He even got a shout-out on the flight home. He’s getting plenty of recognition in Aurora, too, and he will be honored this month by the Aurora Public Library, Aurora Public Schools and the mayor’s office.

After the competition, the rest of the summer will be compara-

tively relaxed for Raju, who enjoys playing the piano, rooting for the Nuggets and going on hikes with his family when he isn’t spelling. He’s participating in a spacethemed summer camp at the University of Denver and later in the summer the family will be traveling to India to visit relatives for the first time since the pandemic began, where there is sure to be another party in his honor.

And then at some point, the flash cards, dictionaries and other studying tools will come back out. But no matter what happens in the future, Raju already has a lot to be proud of.

“Whatever happens next year, I’m just really glad to have made it this far,” he said.

Aurora businesses leading defense innovation

After decades in the military and work in the industry, Navy vet Danny Moore’s own Aurora contracting business now has a critical role in fighting against foreign attacks.

Moore served in the Navy for 24 years, but after retiring he still felt pulled toward serving his country. After seven years with a private company he decided to found his own defense contracting business in Aurora, DeNOVO Solutions, which is one of just a few companies that is both Black and disabled veteran-owned.

DeNOVO and Aurora-based company Advanced Circuits are contracting with Raytheon and Northrop Grumman on the development of the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI), which is being developed for the Missile Defense Agency to defend against incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles and hypersonic weapon threats.

The interceptor is necessary to keep pace with advances in missile technology from countries such as Russia, China and North Korea, according to officials in the defense field.

In a March speech to the Senate Armed Services Committee, U.S. Northern Command leader General Glen Vanherck said that “Russia and China continue to aggressively pursue and field advanced offensive cyber and space capabilities, cruise missiles, hypersonic weapons, and delivery platforms designed to evade detection and strike targets in our homeland from multiple vectors of attack and in all domains.”

Vanherck said that current defense capacity is sufficient to defeat a limited ballistic missile attack, but that North Korea’s ongoing development of missile technology means that the NGI should be developed “on time or early.”

The project is scheduled to have its first operational delivery in 2027, according to Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.

Aerospace-wise Aurora is best known for the iconic Buckley Space Force Base, but along with the rest of the Denver metro area it’s home to many smaller companies that work in the industry as well.

“We’re here in Aurora because Aurora really is the home of defense and technology,” Moore said.

Moore said that he founded DeNOVO with a focus on family values.

“I started this business with the idea that people could defend this country, have a good time doing it and that you could take care of people,” he said. “The whole core of what we are as a company at DeNOVO Solutions is surrounded around being a family-like atmosphere. When we say we love each other, we really mean that.”

Moore said he hopes that more companies are attracted to Aurora, and credited Raytheon and Northrop Grumman for enabling smaller companies like his to participate in the defense process, which is particularly meaningful for him as a veteran.

“Being able to defend the land that we live in is so key, and as a military veteran I’m honored to be able to continue to serve in this capacity,” he said.

DeNOVO’s role in building the NGI is to make the system more efficient by ensuring that different tools and software components work well together.

“Our role is to make the systems and engineers work better together,” he said.

Another Aurora company, Advanced Circuits, is responsible for the printed circuit boards (PCBs) in the NGI. PCBs are the building blocks of just about all electronic devices, from personal computers to satellites.

Advanced Circuits is the third-largest manufacturer of PCBs in North America and has its corporate headquarters in Aurora, where it employs about 300 people. Like DeNOVO, many of its employees are veterans, said director of sales Adam Szychowski.

A good percentage of its business is with the aerospace and defense industries, and the company is proud to be working on the NGI because of its importance, Szychowski said.

“Our nation is protected by a critical homeland defense system and this is really the next generation of that,” he said. “From coast to coast, this is what protects all the people we care about, so that’s why it’s critically important.”

Council approves $200k for youth violence prevention

Lawmakers on Monday signed off on nearly $200,000 in grants for organizations that submitted proposals to help the city tackle the problems of youth violence and gang activity.

The votes came a few weeks after the city council approved a strategic plan for dealing with violence among Aurora youth — a frequent topic of discussion among the group, especially since nine teenagers were wounded in backto-back shootings at Hinkley and near Aurora Central high schools late last year.

After establishing the grant program with marijuana tax revenues in the spring, council members were originally presented with a list of awardees chosen by a panel that included school resource officers from the Aurora Police Department and representatives from the Tri-County Health Department, Aurora Mental Health Center, Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, and Aurora Housing and Community Services.

Council members said May 16 that they wanted to be able to vote on the recommendations for intervention proposals one-by-one, with some saying they were skeptical of some of the proposals. On Monday, the group OK’d suggestions for four programs:

$75,000 for the 18th Judicial District’s Juvenile Assessment Cen-

ter — a nonprofit that works with families in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties — for a bilingual family liaison and youth assessment and case management services. The vote in favor was unanimous.

$40,000 for the University of Colorado’s At-Risk Intervention and Mentoring Program, a violence interruption effort that identifies hospital patients at risk of violence and connects them with hospitaland community-based resources. This amount was a reduction from the original recommendation of $62,500, which city staffers said reflects some outside grant funding

for the program. The vote in favor was unanimous.

$40,000 for Mosaic Unlimited, Inc., a nonprofit associated with Mosaic Church of Aurora, for implementation of the Strengthening Families life skills training program for young people and their parents.

Councilmember Francoise Bergan successfully moved to exclude Mosaic’s Safe Havens program from funding. Bergan said the ongoing effort to recruit, organize and train local faith groups to respond in the wake of shootings is something churches should be doing already without taxpayer support. “I believe that churches should open their churches up when there is a major incident in our society, and they should not ask for government assistance. … I think that is something they should all do,” Bergan said. The council voted 6-4 to endorse Bergan’s motion, with Curtis Gardner, Juan Marcano, Ruben Medina and Crystal Murillo opposed.

$39,600 for Aurora Community

Connection to help that organization hire a full-time licensed mental health provider to serve youth and families. The vote in favor was unanimous.

Not all funding proposals met with success — three failed on party-line votes, with only Alison Coombs, Marcano, Medina and Murillo in favor. Recommendations to provide Fully Liberated Youth with $58,120 and the Struggle of Love Foundation with $28,000 were both rejected with no discussion.

A proposal to provide Step Up Youth Corporation with $55,000 in exchange for violence interruption services also failed, as Councilmember Angela Lawson questioned why the organization was not planning on targeting more Aurora schools.

City staffers previously told the group that funding recommendations for violence prevention programs, which are slated to receive less funding than intervention programs, would come back before the council at their June 13 study session.

Experts warn of summer algae blooms

Read the label on your lawn fertilizer bag and help save your favorite lake or reservoir from those smelly, pea-green algae blooms that shut down summer watering spots for weeks at a time.

That’s the message from water quality officials and city water utilities this year as the summer lawn and recreation season gears up.

Algae blooms, long common in the Eastern United States, are becoming more frequent in Colorado lakes and reservoirs as a 20-year mega-drought reduces water levels, 90-plus degree days occur more often, raising water temperatures, and growing numbers of homeowners add phosphorous-laced lawn fertilizers to their grass.

Blue-green algae produces toxins that can harm people and pets, and can also create odors and tastes that degrade water quality.

The problem surfaced at Aurora’s Quincy Reservoir in 2020. Since then the city has taken the lead on trying new treatment methods,

such as installing aeration devices that inject oxygen into the water. It has also spent millions on other treatments such as hydrogen peroxide and alum, which kill certain types of toxin-producing algae and, with alum, weigh the phosphorous down so that it falls to the bottom of the lake and becomes encased in silt and mud.

But the biggest issue, by far, says Sherry Scaggiari, an environmental services manager at Aurora Water, is the increasing amount of phosphorous that finds its way from lawns into stormwater, and then into streams and lakes.

“We are trying to get people to use less phosphorous on the grass. You need nitrates, but you don’t need phosphorous,” Scaggiari said.

At Barr Lake State Park near Brighton the problem has triggered several efforts to clean up Barr and Milton Reservoir, which are owned by a private irrigation company. Steve Lundt, a scientist who sits on the board of the Barr-Milton Watershed Association, has been monitoring the watershed for some 20 years.

“People always ask, ‘Why is there so much phosphorous in these reservoirs?’ Well, there are 2.5 million people living in the watershed. That is half the population of the state.”

Fixing Barr and Milton is a major undertaking. Treatments such as alum work best in water bodies, such as natural lakes, where water supplies aren’t released annually for irrigation. Much of the Barr-Milton system is used to irrigate farm lands on the Eastern Plains as well as to supply municipal drinking water. It drains and fills every eight months, roughly.

“We would be adding alum almost continuously,” Lundt said, an expensive process that also expands the park’s carbon footprint because the alum has to be mined.

Aurora, however, hopes it only needs to treat Quincy once every 10 years or so, according to Greg Baker, spokesperson for Aurora Water. But if phosphorous levels continue to rise, it may have to be done more frequently.

Lundt is also using a method known as bio-remediation to remove some 8,700 carp, or roughly half of the local carp population, from Barr Lake since 2014. The invasive species is known for stirring up the sediment, releasing phosphorous into the water and creating a situation ripe for algae growth.

This month the association plans to hold a fishing competition with a $2,000 prize for the angler who removes the most carp.

And Aurora and Barr-Milton are looking at extensive planting programs along waterways leading to their reservoirs that will use plants, such as cattails, that are effective at removing phosphorous from water.

Still, water officials say, the best tool, and perhaps most cost-effective, is to begin slashing the use of phosphorous-based lawn fertilizers.

The Barr-Milton Watershed Association has been leading a campaign, called the P-Free Lawn Fertilizer campaign, to encourage

consumers to omit phosphorous from lawn care for several years. And Water ’22, a year-long campaign to educate Coloradans on water issues, is also highlighting the issue. [Water ’22 is being led by Water Education Colorado, which sponsors Fresh Water News].

Lundt said some 12 states have already outlawed phosphorous-enriched fertilizers’ use by homeowners unless they can prove their soils are short of phosphorous.

Major fertilizer makers, such as Scott, have removed phosphorous altogether.

“Fertilizer companies are on board, it’s a matter of just changing the culture of how we fertilize our lawns,” Lundt said.

EDUCATION

CCSD summer program wants to reduce youth violence

As the city of Aurora continues to grapple with a rise in youth violence, the Cherry Creek School District has launched a summer leadership academy designed to provide support to at-risk students.

The Summer Leadership Academy and Anti-Violence Initiative came out of conversations with students and community members about what the district could do to help curb an increase in shootings. The academy will serve about 50 incoming 9th through 12th grade students who have been identified by their principals as having attendance or behavioral problems or known involvement with gangs or guns.

The six week program began Monday and will run through July 21, excluding the week of July 4. After that, the students will be given jobs or apprenticeships in different Cherry Creek departments so they can earn some money before the start of the school year.

The initiative is part of a more holistic approach to curbing youth violence that recognizes that solving the problem will require much more than simply arresting the perpetrators.

The Aurora Public Schools district has had the most high-profile incidents of youth violence this past school year, with two shootings just days apart in November outside district schools that injured nine students. But Cherry Creek has not been unaffected. In March, a 16-year-old Overland High School student was shot and killed just blocks from the school.

“We can’t police our way out of this problem,” former APD Chief Vanessa Wilson said at a November community meeting addressing the APS shootings. On Monday, the Aurora City Council allocated almost $200,000 in grants to community organizations working to combat youth violence and gang activity.

The approach also represents a

shift in how schools have often responded to students who are struggling, district superintendent Chris Smith acknowledged.

“We in education have a tendency to take away things from students who are not engaged in our system, and we are looking at opportunities to re-engage them instead,” he said.

Smith said the academy is intended to be just the first step in Cherry Creek’s ongoing work to support students, and that the participants will serve as a “think tank” for the district. Next school year, the participating students will serve on an advisory committee, and as a capstone project will come up with recommendations for the district on strategies for reducing youth violence.

“We’re going to be asking them to really lean in and tell us what it is that they need and how we can best serve them,” Smith said.

Some of the inspiration for the academy came from conversations Smith had with the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, a group of high school students from across the district who meet with Smith on a regular basis to provide feedback on issues affecting students.

Smith credited Kanye Herron, a member of the council who graduated from Endeavor Academy this May, with providing valuable insight into the kinds of things the district could do to help stop youth violence. He encouraged the district to put kids in contact with people who had similar life experiences, and to help provide them alternative opportunities for creating connections.

“Kids are looking for opportunities to build relationships, and they’re looking for opportunities to engage with other kids and sometimes it’s not always in the most productive ways,” Smith said of part

of what pulls some teens towards gang activity.

Located at Horizon Middle School, the academy will teach students life skills such as time management, long-term goal setting and strategies for navigating high school.

“These are all things that have to be taught,” said Jasper Armstrong, a partner in the district’s department of Equity, Culture and Community Engagement who manages the academy. “We assume students show up with this automatically but these are actually skills and learned behaviors.”

The academy will include opportunities for credit recovery for students who need to catch up academically, and each Friday will bring in a different community organization to speak with students. Those will include anti-gang activist Jason McBride’s McBride Impact, LifeLine Colorado and Make a Chess Move, a Denver nonprofit organization that teaches kids life skills through the game of chess. On Friday evening, Compound for Compassion will create a “safe zone” with games and a DJ.

Beyond earning money and learning new skills, Herron said that he hopes that the biggest thing students take away from the program is that there are people who love them and are invested in their success.

“I look forward to motivating them to do better, encouraging them and showing them that they can make a change,” Herron said. “I’m there for them to walk out with a big heart and wanting to be a leader in the community.”

Smith concurred.

“People care about these kids,” he said. “And if they know it, they’ll do better. But first we need to prove that we believe that they are of value and we love them.”

Man shot in parking lot

A dispute June 5 in a central Aurora apartment parking lot resulted in an unidentified male being shot and injured, according to police.

Police said dispatchers were called about 10:30 p.m. regarding a shooting in the parking lot of Florida Station Apartments, 14022 E. Iowa Drive.

When they arrived, an unidentified man there was suffering “minor injuries.” The wounded man said the shooting suspect was driving a black BMW sedan, which appeared to have a defective driver-side headlight.

“The victim did not know the suspect,” police said in a statement on Monday. The victim said “only that there was a dispute in the parking lot.”

Police said any witnesses who didn’t want to speak to police at the time are asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.

Few details were released after someone was shot inside a bar early June 5 near Jamaica and Colfax in Aurora, sending one wounded person to the hospital.

Police said only that shots were fired at about 1:30 a.m. inside “a business” at  1470 Jamaica St. which is the address for Cazadores Bar and Nightclub.

“One person self-transported to the hospital,” police said in a tweet. “No outstanding suspects, no arrests at the time. Investigation is ongoing.”

There was no identifying information about the shooting victim.

Man shot in leg

An unidentified man was shot and wounded while in a northwest Aurora alley June 3, according to Aurora police.

Police were called to the area near East Colfax Avenue and Alton Street at about 5:20 p.m. after reports of a shooting near there.

Police discovered a man in the alley behind 1522 Alton St. with a gunshot wound in the leg.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital. No information about a shooting suspect was provided.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.

COURTS Charges against Broncos wide receiver dropped

At the request of prosecutors, an Arapahoe County judge this week dismissed charges against Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy stemming from a dispute with his girlfriend that landed him in jail.

Arapahoe County District Court Judge Chantel Contiguglia closed the case after the county district attorney’s office filed a motion to dismiss the charges, said Eric Ross, a spokesman for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Contiguglia also vacated a court hearing to enter a plea that had been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, Ross said.

That allowed Jeudy to attend

the Broncos’ OTA practice Tuesday afternoon.

“We’ve been right there by his side throughout this whole thing,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “Glad everything has been resolved and (it’s) just time to move forward.”

Jeudy, 23, was arrested May 12 at the couple’s home in Centennial after his girlfriend reported he had locked some of her belongings and items for the baby in his car, preventing her from returning to Virginia.

He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree criminal tampering with a domestic violence enhancer, a misdemeanor, and had to spend the night in jail until he could appear before a judge because of the enhancer.

In court the next day, the woman told Contiguglia she did not feel threatened during the dispute and that there was no physical contact. She asked for the charges against Jeudy to be dropped.

After that hearing, Jeudy’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said Jeudy did not do anything that amounted to a crime and the domestic violence label should not have been applied to his case as there was no violence or attempted violence.

Authorities have said there were no allegations of any physical violence. However, under Colorado law, domestic violence can include any crime committed against an intimate partner or their property that is used to intimidate, coerce or seek revenge against them. The law also requires police to arrest anyone they suspect committed such a crime.

Summer exposure

SPEND SOME TIME THIS SEASON LOOKING THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS WITH PHOTO EXHIBITS ACROSS THE DENVER METRO REGION

I’ve recently committed to learning my mom’s Canon Ae1 Program 35 mm camera, which she purchased in either 1983 or 1984, almost a decade before I was born.

It’s slow going.

I learned the basics of photography on a DSLR in high school, but loading film and getting the settings just right in one fell swoop is more challenging than I anticipated. Over the last two years I, like so many others, spent my time on pandemic hobbies that were mindless. Dozens of loaves of banana bread, new-to-me pasta dishes, YouTube dance classes. Anything that would serve as a distraction to the imploding world I was covering for the newspaper.

Now, as the world takes a turn back toward normal, I’m finding that I want to spend my time focusing all of my attention on one thing. With this old Canon, I dive into the specifics and it tests my focus. The film has to align just

Modern Women/ Modern Vision

ThroughAug.28|Tickets: www.denverartmuseum.org

Women photographers have had a profound impact on the medium. It’s easy to see in “Modern Women/Modern Vision” at the Denver Art Museum, on display throughout the summer. There were fewer barriers for women with cameras than in other art forms, but it’s perhaps their perspective that brings the most to this exhibit, which is divided into six parts. Photographs by famous photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White and Dorothea Lange are breathtaking, educational and inspiring all at once.

Below:

right with the teeth of the camera so that it pulls through the spool after each take, and you better know how much light you’re letting through your lens.

Each photograph seems precious, carefully chosen. Unlike the flour, sugar and butter I haphazardly dumped into a bowl two summers ago — eyeing measurements was good enough, what did it matter? — I’m finding a way back into each moment and embracing being fully aware of everything in front of me.

My own personal summer of looking through a new lens comes at a great time. The metro region is filled with photo-focused exhibits this summer. They remind us that a new perspective is useful — necessary even — in achieving progress and moving forward.

From the women who shaped photojournalism to a more abstract artform, there’s plenty to see near Aurora over the next few months.

Culture of Hair

ColoradoPhotographicArts Center|ThroughJune25|

Info:www.cpacphoto.org

We have a complex relationship with hair. From politics to the beauty standards, five photographers and artists take part in “Culture of Hair” to explore how multifaceted and complex it can be. Neurologist Rohina Hoffman’s portrait series shows how much our hair is a part of our identity, while visual artist DM Witman shares how closely hair is tied to personal loss and grief — if you’ve ever thought bangs were a good idea, then you know. Other women artists in the exhibit examine culture and beauty in a way that so many of us can relate to on some level. The exhibit is on display through June 25. A panel discussion with the artists on the CPAC website is as eye opening and educational as the exhibit itself.

Curious Visions Towards Abstract Photography

This summer the Denver Art Museum takes a notable step toward featuring photography at the institution with the inaugural two-part exhibition at the new Delisa & Anthony Mayer Galleries, which spans more than 2,800 square feet on the sixth floor of the new Martin Building. “Curious Visions: Toward Abstract Photography” includes images from the past century, showcasing how the medium and its relation to abstraction has changed throughout history. For the budding photographers, check out the galleries’ “Through the Lens,” an exhibit that explores how cameras and lenses work and how photographs are made.

Georgia O’Keeffe, Photographer

DenverArtMuseum| July3-Nov.6|Tickets: www.denverartmuseum.org

You know her for her vibrant paintings of flowers and southwestern landscapes, but northern New Mexican icon Georgia O’Keeffe’s career also includes other media, such as photography, which will be on display later this summer at the Denver Art Museum. Lisa Volpe, Curator of Photography at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, spent three years researching, analyzing and studying more than 400 photographs by O’Keeffe. The result is an exhibit that reframes the artist, through her own lens. The DAM will also feature programming related to O’Keeffe’s photos throughout the summer and fall.

FulginitiPavilionatCU Anschutz|Showingnow| Info: www.cuanschutz.edu

You can tell a lot about a person, their life and their story in a single portrait. Take a few minutes to really study it, and you’ll find that a portrait is much more than a photograph of a person. In “Eye to Eye: Portraits of Pride, Strength, Beauty” Carey Candrian, an associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, showcases photographs of nearly three dozen LGBTQ women aged 59 to 85. The body of work tells a story of these women, but also of the data Candrian has collected throughout her career. A heads up: Due to COVID-19 precautions, this exhibit is only accessible to badged CU Anschutz faculty, students and staff, but Candrian’s work may show at a public gallery or later this year.

Long before Aurora was a city, before Colorado was a state and before pioneers ventured across the West, 20 million to 30 million bison roamed the land. Then came the settlers, and extinction for the native grazers neared. The Lakota people called bison “tatanka,” which were an important symbol to the indigenous peoples’ culture. As a part of the Aurora History Museum’s “Mosaic of Cultures: Aurora’s Mexican Community” Artist Arturo Garcia, who was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and now owns a studio in Denver, captures the relationship between the bison and the people who first called this land home through a series of paintings. “This exhibition tells the visual story of a significant event in our nation’s history, and I am grateful to have Mr. Garcia’s work on display to share with our museum visitors,” museum director T. Scott Williams says of the exhibition.

In “Blackademics,” two Black female scholars arrive for a dinner reservation at a trendy cafe, but in this hilarious play written by Idris Goodwin their celebration takes a turn. First they debate and then battle “figuratively and literally… for a seat at the table.” Goodwin is an award-winning playwright and Colorado local, serving as the director of The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. He’s the first Black man to hold the position in the center’s 100 year history. Director Betty Hart at the Vintage has assembled a cast that includes: Chelsea Frye as Rachelle, Tobi Compton as Ann and Stephanie Saltis as Georgia. The one-hour play, no intermissions, begins May 20 with showings until June 19 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Whatever side of that view you find yourself on, prepare to feel something inside “The Art of Banksy,” which showcases $35 million worth of Banksy art in one place — the largest exhibit ever assembled. Among the more than 100 pieces on exhibit are some of Banksy’s most recognizable, such as “Girl and Balloon” — which sold for $1.4 million in 2018 and then immediately went through a shredder as art connoisseurs watched in horror — “Flower Thrower” and “Rude Copper.” However, it’s the lesser-known masterpieces by the world’s top political artists that really make this exhibit shine. For the good or for the bad, baseball is a game of inches, a reality the Cherokee Trail baseball team knows full well.

The Cougars were certainly devastated that their fantastic run in the Class 5A Championship Series came to an end June 4, a game short of the final in a one-run loss to Legacy, but they all knew the reality of the sport they love.

The slim margin between wins and losses went again them this time, but it had been on their side more often than not up until that point.

For a team that came into the season in the receiving votes portion of the 5A preseason coaches poll, to win a share of the Centennial League championship and then finish essentially third is something to proud of for sure.

Cherokee Trail would have had a chance to play for the big prize — which would have been the third time in program history after it won the 5A title in 2016 and the 4A crown in 2007 — if it could have held on to a 6-1 lead it built after four innings with its trademark blend of speed on the basepaths and timely hitting.

and junior Tommy Munch — a position player who was a hero on the first weekend for throwing a complete game to save arms — watched a high chopper over a drawin-in infield cap a three-run rally as the Cougars trailed 9-6.

“It’s baseball, you fail more than you succeed,” Cherokee Trail coach Jon DiGiorgio said after his team finished the season 21-8 after a 9-8 defeat at All-City Stadium knocked them out of the double-elimination tournament.

The Cougars — seeking to get the program back on the state’s radar after some atypical down seasons plus the pandemic — succeeded much more than they failed in the postseason. They finished 6-2 between regionals and the Championship Series, where their two losses came by a combined three runs.

Cherokee Trail watched Legacy and Broomfield — both teams it defeated during the tournament — battle it out for the state title (which the fifth-seeded Eagles won with a 7-6 decision) and it also eliminated the No. 1 seed, Regis Jesuit.

“You can’t complain, our resume is pretty good,” DiGiorgio said. “I don’t really know what to say about that. We took down the No. 1 and No. 2 teams. They (Legacy) got us today, but another day, who knows?”

the mound from sophomore Logan Reid, who surprisingly cleared to pitch mid-week after suffering a shoulder injury two weeks earlier.

Reid sailed along through four innings and got two outs with no damage done in the top of the fifth before the game of inches started to go in the other direction.

Senior Tyler Wilcox — who threw his second complete game of the season a day earlier against Broomfield to help send his team to the final day — started at shortstop in place of injured sophomore starter Braeden Reichert and his throw to complete a double play arrived at first base a fraction of a second late. Then a sinking line drive to left field landed in the webbing of the glove of diving senior outfielder Coby Austin, but rolled out as he hit the ground, extending the inning.

“That one’s going to be eating me up for awhile, but that’s life I guess,” said Austin, who had made several big plays in the tournament.

A few more well-placed hits — several with two strikes — turned a potentially harmless inning into a five-run rally that tied the game at 6-6. Reid had to come out due to pitch count

Though the end of the game was near, there was no panic in Cherokee Trail, especially with the Barber brothers (seniors Nick and Brett) coming up to start the sixth. Both reached base, executed a double steal of second and third and were driven home to cut the deficit to one run.

With two outs, Wilcox lifted a drive to right field that would have driven in the tying and goahead runs had it fallen, but Legacy’s Marcus Romero hauled it in with a diving catch.

“We had two runners on and if that drops, they both score and we’re ahead,” Nick Barber said. “That might have been the game right there. But that’s OK, it’s baseball.”

Nick Barber had his fourth hit of the day to lead off the seventh, but the Cougars were unable to bring him home.

It brought to an end a very memorable stretch run for a group of 11 seniors who had lost their sophomores seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which also forced them to play a shortened junior season.

“This is a very special moment, I’m never going to forget it,” said senior Andrew Godfrey, who delivered three hits and drove in three runs in the final game. “In the sixth and seventh innings,

Right: Kyson Clement, right, smiles as he heads towards an open layup during a practice of the Smoky Hill Unified basketball team on June 2. The Buffaloes practiced for the last time before they headed to Orlando, Florida, to represent Colorado in the Special Olympics USA Games.

Middle: Anthony Harris Jr., a star on Smoky Hill’s boys basketball team, has made a big impact on the Unified team since joining as one of the partners with his skill and his ability to instill confidence in other players.

Below: Smoky Hill Unified coach Kelton Coppinger has puts his team through the paces as it prepares to play top teams from other states at the USA Games.

Ismael Shah’s life has already changed for the better because of Special Olympics sports, and now he has the experience of a lifetime in front of him.

The 17-year-old Smoky Hill High School student is part of the school’s Unified basketball team, which has been selected to represent Colorado in the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, Florida, June 5-10.

Shah is one of seven players plus three partners that will represent Colorado in play at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, the same venue that the NBA used when it played its season in the “bubble” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The basketball team is part of a contingent of 86 athletes from Colorado that were picked to compete in Orlando.

The Smoky Hill team won the Colorado Special Olympics state championship and has since prepared for a different level of competition, as it is set to face teams from several other states.

The makeup of the team has changed a bit ahead of the trip — picking up players from a couple of other schools, including Kyson Clement (son of Vista PEAK boys basketball coach Keenon Clement) from Eaglecrest — and Coppinger said the group that will play in the USA Games has more higher-functioning athletes.

Hoop dreams

“I’m honored because NBA legends and Hall of Famers went on that court and current players went on that court, so I’m really excited,” Shah said at the Smoky Hill team’s last practice before it departed.

“I have an opportunity to go with my incredible team and with my incredible coaches and see new things in Florida. I’ve never been there before and I just want to see everything. I want to see us grow and see what our team can do.”

Because of its track record of annual success, the Smoky Hill Unified team got asked to represent the state at the USA Games, which is an Olympics-like event that happens every four years.

The Buffaloes got the invitation last August, which organizer Kelton Coppinger — a Special Education teacher at Smoky Hill — said he accepted immediately.

Cory Chandler, programs manager at Special Olympics Colorado, who headed the Unified program at Grandview previously, said the Smoky Hill team had been picked out of a group of 30-40 teams, which was “big honor” and came in large part due to the success of the program. The last time the USA Games were contested, Colorado did not have a team in the basketball event.

The team is made up of seven athletes with three helpers in Anthony Harris Jr., Amrajie Bass and Kaiden McElhiney. Harris Jr. starred on the Smoky Hill football and boys basketball teams, Bass was one of the leaders on the school’s softball team and McElhiney plays football.

The biggest difference between regular season play and the USA Games is that helpers can score and play in the flow of the game, while they usually just rebound and set up shots for the athletes.

That brings into play the abilities of Harris Jr., one of Colorado’s most explosive players.

“Anthony is a freak of nature athlete,” Kyson Clement said. “I can’t find the words. He’s just a fun human being to hang out and play with. I’ve seen some of his games with Smoky. He is an amazing human being.”

Harris Jr. is looking forward to the experience and said he would try to “make it good for them” in any way he can.

Clement — who said he is a big fan of the Golden State Warriors — is also looking forward to playing on the courts that the NBA players were on a couple of years ago.

“Since I got the invitation, I was like ‘yes, I want to go,’” he said. “There is a one in a million chance to do this, so 100 percent I wanted to. I felt emotional tears of joy, pretty much.”

The team begins with pool play and then can advance to the medal round where it can go for the gold medal. A national gold medal would send the Smoky Hill team on to the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany, next June.

Colorado’s best: Dallas Macias did just about everything in a big way for the Regis Jesuit baseball team in his senior season, as he hit .522 with 17 doubles, eight home runs, 47 runs scored and 31 RBI. Macias, an Oregon State signee, became the third player from an Aurora program to be selected as Gatorade’s Colorado Baseball Player of the Year, as he joined another former Regis Jesuit star infielder in Max George (2013-14) and former Grandview star Greg Bird as local winners since Gatorade began to give out the award in 1985-86.

BASEBALL Regis Jesuit’s Dallas Macias wins Colorado Gatorade POY

Dallas Macias capped a phenomenal senior season by winning the 2021-22 Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year award, which was announced June 3.

The 6-foot, 190-pound infielder led head coach Matt Darr’s Regis Jesuit team to a 23-5 mark and a spot in the Class 5A Baseball Championship Series, which ended on May 28 when the Raiders lost to Cherokee Trail in an all-Aurora elimination game.

Macias finished 2-for-3 and scored three times in his final game, which capped a season in which he hit .522 with 17 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI. The Oregon State signee also scored 47 runs and stole nine bases.

“Dallas Macias is the ultimate team leader and clutch hitter. Any time Regis Jesuit needed him to come up big for them this year, he came through,” Bradley Johnson, head coach at ThunderRidge, said in a press release. “In my opinion, there is no one we played that comes close to his abilities as a competitor.”

In the release, Gatorade said that Macias is the No. 3-ranked prospect in the state according to Perfect Game and the Prep Baseball Report. He has a chance to be taken high in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.

Macias had a 3.73 GPA at Regis Jesuit. Off the field and out of the classroom, Macias has volunteered with Special Olympics and as a youth baseball coach, while he is a devoted member of his church.

So close: Grandview High School sophomore-to-be Sienna Betts made it to the final cuts to make the U17 National Team that will play in the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup in July in Debrecent, Hungary. Betts was one of 40 players from across the country invited to tryouts in Colorado Springs by USA Basketball and she progressed to the final 16 players from which the 12-player roster was selected. Another former Regis Jesuit infielder was the last Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year from an Aurora program and that was Max George, who won the award in 201314 and is currently in the Colorado Rockies’ minor league system. Greg Bird (2010-11) of Grandview is the other local winner of the award, which began in the 1985-86 season.

Macias has shown himself to be one of Colorado’s finest all-around athletes, as he also had an outstanding season in the fall serving multiple roles with the Regis Jesuit football team. He made 121 tackles as a safety, had 254 yards receiving, more than 450 yards between kickoff and punt returns and scored touchdowns via reception, interception and punt return (two) to help the Raiders finish 8-4.

Aurora has now had 33 different individuals win Colorado Player of the Year honors from Gatorade in a variety of sports. Grandview’s Lauren Betts won the award for the state in girls basketball during the winter season.

BASKETBALL Grandview’s Sienna Betts among final cuts for USA U17 Team

Sienna Betts, who helped the Grandview High School girls basketball team win the Class 5A state championship as a freshman, earned her way into a group of 16 finalists to make the USA Basketball Women’s U17 National Team roster.

Forty players were invited to three days of trials in Colorado Springs and Betts was the only Colorado prep player among the invitees. She was also one of only seven players from the Class of 2025 in the group and the only one to make it into the group of finalists, which were otherwise from the graduating classes of 2023 and 2024.

USA Basketball sent out a release June 1 with the 12-player roster for the U17 squad — which will represent the country at the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup July 9-17 in Debrecen, Hungary — and the 6-foot-4 Betts was not selected.

USA Basketball said the finalists and final roster were picked by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Committee. Interestingly enough, two of the players on the 12-player roster come from La Jolla Country Day School in California, which Betts and Grandview defeated in December at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix. Another U17 selection came from Hopkins High School in Minnesota, which the Wolves also played in a nationally-televised tournament.

Betts, a sophomore-to-be at Grandview, made the all-conference second team in the rugged Centennial League in her debut varsity season and averaged 10.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.

Betts’ older sister, Lauren (a recent graduate and Stanford University signee), earned gold medals with USA Basketball’s U16 National Team in 2019 and in 2021 with the U19 World Cup team.

ALL-STATE GAMES Aurora athletes compete at CSU-Pueblo

The 66th All-State Games put on by the Colorado High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) run this week on the campus of Colorado State-Pueblo, with local athletes scheduled to be part of the events that take place throughout the week.

The All-State Games annually bring together some of the top athletes from across the state who have recently completed their senior years in high school in eight sports, plus a variety of coaches.

The opening competition is the All-State softball game at 1 p.m. June 8 at Rawlings Field, which does not have any Aurora players in it, but one of the teams will be coached by Brennan Brown, who is the new Smoky Hill softball coach.

Athletes in boys and girls wrestling, volleyball, spirit and boys and girls basketball check in on June 9

and begin competition on June 10 with the majority of the action taking place at Massari Arena, beginning with wrestling at 9 a.m. The four-team girls basketball competition begins at 11:30 a.m. with a game between the Red (which includes Vista PEAK’s Breanna Jefferson) and White teams, followed by a matchup of the Black and Blue teams at 1 p.m. The boys basketball semifinals start with the 2:30 p.m. contest between the Red and White teams, while the Blue team (which features the tandem of Rangeview’s KK Stroter and Elijah Thomas) meets the Black at 4 p.m.

The first volleyball semifinal (Red vs. White) is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the second (Black vs. Blue) is set for 3:30 p.m. at CSU-Pueblo’s Rec Center. The final competition on June 10 is the All-State football game, which has Rangeview’s DeMario Williams on the South Team.

The final championships are contested June 11 in girls basketball at 12:45 p.m. and boys basketball at 4:15 p.m.

A POKE IN A PIG LAW

One year later, and Aurora’s pot-bellied pig proponents appear no closer today than they were a year ago to getting the animals admitted into residential neighborhoods.

A year after it was set aside, last Thursday, the question of allowing livestock in Aurora’s backyard once again came before Aurora City Council members.

Juan Marcano, Ruben Medina and Crystal Murillo — who serve together on a policy committee tasked with evaluating residential development standards — heard a presentation from city staff on what it would mean to accept ducks and pot-bellied pigs in residential areas across the city.

Currently, chickens can be kept in any residential zoning area with a permit, though homeowners’ associations may have their own sets of rules. Beehives can also be installed near homes, as long as aspiring apiarists follow city regulations.

But for the most part, traditional livestock animals can only be kept on a residential property if the land is zoned rural-residential. About 238 acres qualify across the entire city — a tiny fraction of all residential properties and less than one-quarter of 1% of all land in the City of Aurora.

Despite popularity of residents wanting and keeping pet pigs in the city, Aurora lawmakers say no to making a squeal deal
›› Continues on 16

That hasn’t stopped some residents from petitioning their elected representatives to allow livestock animals in more parts of the city and a casual cruise on local social media neighborhood sites makes it clear some people aren’t waiting for municipal approval.

Porcine aficionados may be disappointed.

“I know there are folks who are very active in wanting the pot-bellied pigs,” Murillo said on June 2. “I don’t think it makes sense at this time.”

Anthony Youngblood, the city’s manager of animal services, again made the case for why pigs aren’t a good fit in suburban Aurora. He first described how many pig owners are uninformed or misled about the size of fully-grown adult pigs, which can weigh hundreds of pounds.

Buyers who haven’t done their research often purchase so-called “micro-pigs” or “teacup pigs,” only to abandon them later when they grow beyond what was advertised, Youngblood said.

He also said pigs can be noisy, with a pig’s squeal reaching up to 115 decibels in volume, around the same volume as a jet engine. According to information published by Purdue University, a dog’s bark can be as loud as 100 decibels.

Pigs can also transmit diseases such as salmonella and erysipelas, damage property when rooting and even injure humans if allowed to become aggressive, said Youngblood.

“We’re not equipped to handle pigs of that size, of that nature,” he said. “We are very worried about someone saying they can keep a pig at this weight, and they can’t.”

Council members on the committee agreed, and while they signaled support for an ordinance allowing residents to keep as many as four ducks on urban properties, the June 2 meeting meant it was back to the drawing board for pot-bellied pig advocates.

“It’s really disappointing how misleading a lot of the marketing for keeping pigs has

been from folks who are trying to sell people pet pigs,” Marcano said. “Unfortunately, pigs are adorable, they’re very sweet animals, but those are just not really suitable for residential areas.”

Aurora’s animal magnetism

Aurora’s ban on pot-bellied pigs across most of the city has not extinguished interest in owning those and other livestock animals. Interest expressed by residents was also the catalyst for the pot-bellied pig conversation last summer, which did not lead to the rules being relaxed.

When asked how often the city’s animal shelter is contacted by residents looking to surrender animals other than cats and dogs, city spokesman Michael Brannen said the shelter receives around 20 livestock animals each year, as well as up to 100 animals like lizards or snakes, but that the number of people who contacted the city about giving up an animal was “much larger.”

Erin Brinkley-Burgardt — who along with her husband, Andrew, co-founded Hog Haven Farm in 2014 — said Aurora is the number one source of requests that her pig rescue in rural Deer Trail, Colorado gets for taking in animals. She said the rescue also no longer allows Aurora residents to adopt pigs because of the regulatory situation.

”The number of people who keep pet pigs

in Aurora is very high,” she said.

Brinkley-Burgardt was raised in the suburbs of Denver, “1,000% a city girl until pigs came into my life,” she said. She became involved in rescuing pigs after she and her husband adopted their first pig, named Pipsqueak, in 2013.

She argued that pigs make good companions as long as buyers are familiar with their size and space requirements, and she said many of the behavioral issues cited by cities with bans and strict regulations are diminished when the animals have enough outdoor space.

“Any animal can be destructive if they’re not given the appropriate environment and enrichment,” Brinkley-Burgardt said. “Pigs are very affectionate animals. Their emotional intelligence is that of a 3-to-4-year-old human child. You’ll see people get them as emotional support animals pretty frequently. It’s almost like having a family member versus just a pet.”

Laws on pot-bellied pig ownership vary across the Denver metro area, according to information prepared by the city. Some jurisdictions — such as Commerce City, Lakewood, Northglenn and Westminster — place restrictions on how much a pig can weigh, which opponents say encourages pig owners to underfeed their animals.

Denver requires residents to go through a hearing and permit process before bringing a pig onto their property. Englewood bans the animals completely.

Pet peeves among experts

Ragan Adams, a veterinary specialist at Colorado State University Extension, said that the main challenge that comes up with people having urban livestock is that potential owners don’t understand how much of a commitment taking care of an animal is.

In Fort Collins, she was always struck by the difference in appearance between some of the chickens she saw. While some of them seemed very well cared for, others “had kind of a rugged life” and didn’t seem to be getting all of the attention they needed.

“Some people don’t realize how much work having animals 24/7, 365 days of the year is,” Adams said. “It’s not like having a seasonal garden.”

There’s also a divide in that some people who lobby for livestock to be allowed in urban areas want to have animals so they can produce food, while others view them as pets. Neither is better or worse than the other, Adams said, but they come with different mindsets.

“People that plead to have animals in the city do it on the basis that it’s part of their food supply but oftentimes they treat them like pets,” she said.

Adams was involved in a 2013 Fort Collins decision to allow people to have up to two dwarf goats in urban backyards. While it was being considered, she said that many people on city council and others in the city didn’t seem to understand all the trouble goats (even the small ones) can get in to, like escaping from backyards or eating up an entire garden. Goats and other livestock also carry zoonotic diseases that most people aren’t aware of.

As part of allowing people to own goats, the local Humane Society had to inspect people’s enclosures to ensure it was sufficient for the animals to live comfortably and that they wouldn’t be able to escape. CSU Extension also produced a pamphlet on healthy living with goats that was required reading in order to obtain a license.

Making sure people are educated prior to owning animals is one of the best practices that cities can implement if they are considering changing their zoning laws, Adams said. Ultimately, the welfare of the animals is what’s most important.

“If you just want something to play with, get a bicycle,” she said.

Brannen, with the City of Aurora, also said people should do their homework about the needs of any animal, in addition to regulations, before bringing any new animals home.

“People who want to take an animal home should do an adequate amount of research to ensure they are prepared to manage the animal,” he wrote in an email. “They should research the animal’s breed, and understand their dietary and grooming needs. They should find out what is the activity level of the animal. They should find out if the animal’s character traits fit the home conditions.”

A 2018 paper written by UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences professor Catherine Brinkley analyzing urban poultry ordinances in 100 Colorado municipalities found that in the past five years, more poultry ordinances were passed or modified in the state than in the previous hundred.

Many people express a desire to raise their own chickens or other livestock because of unsanitary or inhumane conditions at commercial operations. However, the paper noted that most ordinances contained very limited regulations compared to requirements placed on farms and slaughterhouses.

“Most ordinances inadequately address both human and animal health and welfare concerns,” the paper said. “Provisions governing animal slaughter and routine veterinary care are rare, presenting a concern for monitoring and intervening in public health crises. In addition, shelters anticipate higher poultry intakes, particularly as unwanted birds are turned loose to become strays.”

Shelter operators interviewed by the re-

searchers named “noise complaints, owners getting bored with the animals or not realizing the level of necessary care, and welfare seizures” as the major reasons people surrendered their chickens.

It seems like the pandemic accelerated the desire to bring a little bit of farmland into urban and suburban areas, even as amateur farming has seen an uptick in the years prior. Across the nation, businesses that sell chicks, coops and other supplies said in the final months of 2020 they saw a surge since the pandemic started.

Mark Podgwaite, a Vermont chicken breeder who heads the American Poultry Association, told the Associated Press he and other breeders noticed an uptick in demand for chicks since the pandemic began. His organization, which represents breeders and poultry-show exhibitors, has seen a jump in new members.

“Without question, the resurgence in raising backyard poultry has been unbelievable over the past year,” said Podgwaite, who keeps a flock of roughly 100 birds. “It just exploded. Whether folks wanted birds just for eggs or eggs and meat, it seemed to really, really take off.”

Before the pandemic, in 2019, Arapahoe County made the move to allow residents in unincorporated residential regions of the county — HOAs willing — to raise up to four hens (roosters and other fowl aren’t allowed, however).

They also allowed the backyard keeping of bees. A lot of less than 20,000 square feet can have up to two hive boxes, but an acre can have as many as eight.

In Aurora, the dream for at least a little bit of farm life is still alive. Marcano and others said June 2 that they would like to see city staffers bring back an ordinance which would allow residents to keep up to four ducks on their property.
