Nothing good ever came from slavery in America, or from Gov. Ron DeSantis

In a world where the former U.S. president faces criminal charges for inciting an insurrection to make himself a dictator; where the son of a former presidential candidate says COVID was designed to avoid Jews, and where Congressperson Lauren Boebert even exists, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ treacherous racism stands out.

Amid the hurtful and worrisome gay slurs and inhumane treatment of immigrants DeSantis regularly inflicts, this really happened.

DeSantis defended changes he’s forced into Florida public schools that teaches children his version of the Black experience in America.

DeSantis defended curricula that instructs students to learn that Black American slaves actually benefited from being forced into labor by “parlaying” skills slave owners forced them to learn into something good, “later on.”

That’s just sick beyond all standards of sick political leaders these days.

It’s so dark and so repugnant, that this just had to be some kind of exaggeration of something DeSantis said that was sketch, but not this depraved.

Nope.

He not only said it, but he doubled down on his notion that the Black American slavery debacle had a silver lining for those who survived their captivity, beatings, rapes, and lifetimes of dehumanizing abuse.

While in Salt Lake City last week, DeSantis rewarmed his earlier arguments that a new Florida statewide history curriculum being inflicted on students in that state was actually an antidote to what DeSantis says is toxic “woke” liberalism. He says, frequently, that liberal teachers are trying to “indoctrinate” children into believing that gay and lesbian people exist and that they aren’t mentally ill aberrations.

DeSantis, and his faithful followers there, across the country and even some here in Colorado are horrified that history teachers enlighten children with the fact that racism in America is sometimes systemic, helping to perpetuate it.

DeSantis does not believe that there are laws in Florida and other places that actually perpetuate racism and the degradation of Black people and other people of color.

He believes that Black men take up vastly disproportionate slots in jail and prison because they disproportionately commit more crimes.

Even though undisputed studies have consistently revealed that Black men are more likely to be targeted by po-

lice than white men, and that they are more likely to have inferior legal representation than white men, and that they are more likely to receive longer sentences than white men, the facts are disregarded.

Sure, it’s shocking to hear a sitting U.S. governor and presidential candidate justify and rationalize his racism. It wasn’t surprising, however, that DeSantis is trying to gaslight all Americans, including Black Americans, into believing that, sure, slavery kinda sucked, but it was actually good for the slaves.

“They’re probably going to show some of the folks that eventually parlayed being a blacksmith into doing things later, later in life. But the reality is: All of that is rooted in whatever is factual,” DeSantis said, according to an Associated Press story.

“Parlayed” being an enslaved blacksmith in the South into, what? Shoeing a horse to ride into a town that would lynch the man and his family for generations to come?

People like DeSantis, who try to gaslight Black people into thinking slavery and generations of the segregation and racism that followed weren’t all that bad, don’t care about an accurate representation of history. This has nothing to do with the liberal arts of academics and intellectualism.

It’s impossible to seriously suggest that slavery’s silver lining was teaching Black people to sharpen axes or repair cotton gins. It’s no less depraved and insulting than insisting that Japanese Americans actually learned valuable farming skills for free when forced into internment camps or that indigenous Americans were saved from having to walk so much of their lives by being forced onto small reservations.

American slavery existed for generations because it was normalized by similar tropes and justifications.

The lesson here is to keep politics and politicians out of academics. It’s anathema to the very foundations of American education to allow for such shameless propaganda and devious attempts to rewrite history.

Archie Bunker, in the 1970s sitcom “All in the Family” was a satire on this kind of American pseudo-intellectual mask over racism and hatred. There’s no good reason to tolerate this absurdity now, let alone elevate to top public offices.

Full speed ahead on using technology to make roads safer

The numbers speak for themselves.

There have already been close to 10,000 car crashes in Adams and Arapahoe counties so far this year, many of them within Aurora.

So far this year, there have been 38 road fatalities in Aurora. There were 48 for all of 2022, an already alarming number.

Anyone who commutes daily across Aurora, and especially across the metroplex, knows first-hand how dangerous it has become just to get to work, to school or the store.

The SentinelColoradocomment section, letters to the editor and any public meeting focusing on traffic safety is chock full of complaints about reckless, unconstrained speeding and racing drivers.

If there’s a positive note to the devolution of metro roads, it’s that more people aren’t injured every day by the stunning disregard for safety and even sanity on public roads, and especially highways.

The problem isn’t just local, and it didn’t come suddenly.

Traffic and sociology experts say the disregard for speed limits, red lights, stop signs and other traffic rules and laws has been growing for several years.

Aurora traffic police officials have long referred to I-225 as the “Aurora Autobahn,” a nod to the highway’s seemingly speed-limitless interstate.

Researchers say the problem of roadway lawlessness has grown alongside police departments being squeezed by labor shortages and other increasing crime and service demands.

With fewer traffic patrol cars and cops on the roads, fewer scofflaws are caught.

Sociologists and psychologists say the phenomenon is simple: People will often get away with what they believe they can get away with.

With patrol cars out of sight all across the metroplex, the notion of playing by the rules is out of mind.

Metro roads have become a treacherous free-for-all because police aren’t there to offer a visible reminder that law-breakers can — and will — get caught, ticketed, fined and punished with higher insurance rates.

Police simply don’t have the resources.

Aurora, like most communities, soured long ago on automated, camera-operated, traffic enforcement.

A few years ago, local voters overwhelmingly agreed that so-called redlight cameras, which automatically ticketed people who ran red lights, were essentially insidious nuisances.

Whether they were nuisances or not, it was difficult for police to prove they were truly effective at increasing intersection safety. They were, however, extremely effective at raising millions of dollars of year in fines from motorists driving through “orange” and “light-red” traffic lights at select Aurora intersections.

TheSentinelwas among those advising the city to stop red-light camera programs and instead patrol truly dangerous intersections to prevent infractions.

Not only have times changed, the speeding problem is different.

Aurora recently announced a new program using latest-technology radar-camera vans to be sent out to select parts of the city to snag speeders on city streets. The program rolls out with huge, warning signs about the radar vans, and the automated vans themselves are intentionally intimidating to local lead-foots.

We not only enthusiastically endorse the idea, we suggest police and city officials quickly expand to further trials.

Aurora, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol should collaborate on a program that advises motorists that street-light, street level and other cameras and radar equipment are monitoring select segments of I-225 and automatically ticketing and prosecuting anyone caught speeding, racing or weaving.

While this may set off alarms for those concerned about Big Brother watching where we drive, the ability to save lives and restore sanity to the area’s interstates cannot be ignored. If police here, or anywhere in the metroplex, do not have the resources to visibly, regularly and seriously patrol the roads to stop and prevent the problem, an automated way to warn, detect and mete out punishment for what by all accounts is criminal menacing is an experiment worth conducting.

Europe, and especially France, has long used this highway technology to successfully prevent temptation and inflict hefty fines on those who don’t heed the well-publicized and broadcast warnings. Let’s join them.

You can try that in a small mind

Earlier this week, the Country Music Television pulled Jason Aldean’s highly controversial music video for “Try That in a Small Town,” after its release last week sparked controversy.

Aldean, one of the biggest country music stars, has been widely criticized for the new song and video, which features intense hostility and threats of violence against police protesters.

Some of the tune’s lyrics include: “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face / Stomp on the flag and light it up / Yeah, you think you’re tough / Well, try that in a small town / See how far you make it down the road / Around here, we take care of our own.”

Later in the song, Aldean hints to a conspiracy theory that the U.S. government intends to round up its citizens: “Got a gun that my granddad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up / Well, that s— might fly in the city, good luck.”

The video is also sporadically peppers with footage of protesters — some confrontational and violent — squaring off with law enforcement.

More disturbing is the fact that filming for the video occurred at the Maury County courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, a town with a horrendous, racially volatile history. In 1927, it was the site of the lynching of a 27-year-old Black man, Henry Choate. A riot occurred in the same city in 1946.

Aldean has defended the song’s lyrics and refuted allegations that it alludes to the Black Lives Matter protest movement.

While he has received considerable support from many right-wing commentators and other conservatives, another music superstar, Sheryl Crow, a long time advocate of gun safety, has been among Aldean’s critics. In a Twitter comment, Crow stated “I’m from a small town. Even people in small towns are sick of violence. There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence. You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting. This is not American or small town-like. It’s just lame.”

The shooting she is referring to is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, which took place in Las Vegas in October 2017 as Aldean was performing at the Route 91 Harvest festival. He and his band escaped physically unscathed, but 58 people were killed and 867 were injured.

Aldean’s defense did little to assuage the critics who had already harbored deeply ambivalent feelings toward him. He has also dealt with numerous controversies in the past, and been very sympathetic to right-wing causes, such as:

Wearing blackface at a Halloween party in 2015

Declared that he could not distinguish between female country singers.

Has repeatedly worn a Confederate Flag on stage at concerts.

Espoused rhetoric that is critical of and offensive to the LGBTQIA community.

Praised and encouraged maskless concerts during the height of the COVID pandemic.

Has been an outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump, calling him “the G.O.A.T.”

While he certainly has the right to endorse whatever political candidates or embrace any political ideology he desires, other people have the right to critique and challenge such a value system, especially as it relates to public figures.

Here’s looking at you, Mr. Aldean.

Elwood Watson is a professor of history, Black studies, and gender and sexuality studies at East Tennessee State University. He is also an author and public speaker.

ROBIN NICETA AND MOTHER INDICTED FOR MAKING BOGUS BRAIN CANCER CLAIMS DURING FALSIFIED CHILD ABUSE CASE

The former girlfriend of Aurora’s former police chief faces new charges after prosecutors say she faked a diagnosis of brain cancer to avoid criminal consequences for trying to frame an Aurora lawmaker for child abuse last year.

Friday’s grand jury indictment describes how Robin Niceta’s story of languishing with brain cancer unraveled under scrutiny as investigators tracked the online presence of New Mexico Oncology Associates, an apparently fictitious medical practice, back to Niceta and her mother.

Former Arapahoe County social worker Robin Niceta walks from a courtroom May 15, 2023 at the Arapahoe County Justice Center in Centennial. A previous court found that Niceta falsely accused Jurinsky of abusing her toddler son two years ago. The accusations were made after Jurinsky called former Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson “trash” during a talk-radio show. At the time, Niceta was in a romantic relationship with Wilson.

Niceta faces a total of 10 new charges, including multiple counts of forgery, attempting to influence a public servant, conspiracy, tampering with physical evidence and criminal impersonation. Her mother, Janice Dudley, also faces charges of forgery, evidence tampering and conspiracy.

Lawyers representing Niceta withdrew from the case in May when claims about her health were initially called into question. Her current attorney, Frank Moya, said he would wait to comment on the specific allegations but criticized authorities’ decision to arrest Niceta in New Mexico instead of arranging with Moya for her surrender as “justice by ambush.”

The news of the indictment was originally reported by ABC affiliate Denver7.

Last year, Niceta was criminally charged after she allegedly called in a fake child abuse tip to the

county child services agency where she worked. The target of the tip was Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky, who had criticized Niceta’s girlfriend, former police Chief Vanessa Wilson, on a talk radio show.

As legal proceedings against Niceta moved forward this year, Niceta tried to claim through her lawyers that she was suffering from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, and was too sick to travel to Colorado from New Mexico, where her parents live. She also claims to have suffered long-term harm from an assault that she says took place in her home in 2021.

Niceta’s lawyers shared images with prosecutors that they said were scans of a tumor in Niceta’s brain, along with reports signed by “C. Marquez M.D.” of New Mexico Oncology and a letter purporting to be from California-based cancer treatment center City of Hope.

In March, Niceta’s lawyers asked that Niceta be evaluated to determine whether she was mentally competent to stand trial, filing the same medical records in the Arapahoe County District Court.

The reports, signed by Marquez, included the observation that Niceta was “disoriented, unable to communicate and suffering from cognitive impairment” during office visits, according to the indictment. Niceta’s medical records also included statements from her mother describing Niceta’s purported poor health.

Daniel Cohen — a chief deputy district at-

torney from Denver and the special prosecutor in Niceta’s original criminal case — called the phone number included in the medical records for New Mexico Oncology and spoke with a man who identified himself as Marquez and vouched for the legitimacy of the scans of Niceta’s brain.

But when Cohen tried to use public databases to identify a “C. Marquez” licensed to practice medicine in New Mexico, he came up empty-handed.

He showed Niceta’s medical records to Corral Steffey, a doctor at Denver Health Medical Center, who pointed out that the records “contained numerous typos and improperly used various medical terms.”

Steffey also raised concerns about the brain scan images being a forgery due to their similarity with other publicly-available images found online, adding that the tumor “did not appear to be medically legitimate, due to the unlikely size, shape, and area of effect of the claimed glioblastoma.”

As Cohen continued to scrutinize the records submitted by Niceta, he found more irregularities pertaining to Marquez and New Mexico Oncology.

The Facebook page for New Mexico Oncology had been created in January 2023, the same month Niceta submitted images of her brain scans to prosecutors, but showed no activity after January. The website for New Mexico Oncology was created the same month and did not include any information about employees or staff.

On May 18, a grand jury empowered Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Johnnie Turnidge to investigate the validity of Niceta’s claims about her illness.

Information subpoenaed from Facebook, GoDaddy and Google revealed that New Mexico Oncology’s online presence was associated with “Carey Marquez,” “Courtney Marquez” and “C

Strong-mayor proposal clears first hurdle on path to Aurora ballot

Aurora’s city clerk ruled July 25 that a petition to empower the mayor and restructure the city’s government had gathered enough signatures to move forward in the process of appearing before voters this fall.

Petition sponsors gathered 12,198 valid signatures out of a total of 20,409 signatures submitted to the clerk’s office, according to a city news release, 181 signatures above the required threshold.

For a citizen-sponsored charter amendment to appear on a regular election ballot, Aurora requires the sponsors to gather the number of signatures equal to at least 5% of the electorate registered to vote on the date of the last regular municipal election — in this case, 12,017 signatures.

The last of the signatures was submitted June 26, and the clerk’s office had up to 30 days to vet them and determine whether they belonged to registered voters.

Most of the language of the amendment pertains to eliminating the position of city manager

Marquez,” as well as a particular IP address, a series of numbers used to uniquely identify computers connected to the Internet.

Finally, when Turnidge subpoenaed internet service provider Cable One for information about the associated IP address, he learned it was registered to Niceta and associated with her and her mother.

He was later able to link the phone number Cohen had called to a credit card registered to Niceta’s mother and used by Niceta. Law enforcement also determined that the physical address of New Mexico Oncology was invalid and that no one named Carey Marquez was licensed to practice oncology in the United States. Representatives from City of Hope told investigators that the organization had not corresponded with Niceta.

The indictment also describes inconsistencies in Niceta’s account of her illness and losing her ability to communicate. While Niceta’s medical records indicate she became nonverbal in January 2022, Turnidge said he personally spoke with Niceta in May 2022 and that she “had no difficulty at all communicating … during the course of a lengthy police interview.”

Turnidge said he also saw Niceta speak with a judge and enter and exit the courthouse without physical assistance during her appearance on May 15 of this year, despite the fact that Dudley said, among other things, that Niceta was physically incapacitated.

As Niceta tried to convince others of her illness, according to

and folding that person’s authority over city staffers into the position of mayor, who would also be able to veto city council legislation.

Other parts of the proposal would add an at-large council member and reduce term limits for mayors and council members from three four-year terms to two, among other changes.

While supporters of so-called “strong-mayor” governments generally argue that folding the responsibilities of a city manager and mayor into a single position encourages leaner, more efficient city governments, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has been vocal in its opposition to the proposal, describing it as a power grab by Mayor Mike Coffman.

Opponents have also accused canvassers hired by Victor’s Canvassing of Colorado Springs of misleading members of the public into signing the petition, presenting it as modifying term limits while downplaying the new powers that would be given to the mayor.

“Citizens in Aurora, local business leaders and elected officials from both sides of the aisle are ready to fight Coffman’s power grab at every step, including by challenging the petition process which, we are strongly convinced, did not submit enough legal signatures,” said Charlie Richardson, a former city

the indictment, her mother gave statements to news media about her daughter’s condition, telling the Sentinelin the spring that her daughter had “a huge tumor on the right side of her head,” which she described as glioblastoma.

Dudley also wrote in an April email that Niceta was “experiencing significant medical issues that have worsened since August 2021 after having experienced a brutal assault in her home and she is in need of specialized medical care.”

“This case has presented barriers to her getting this care and sadly, she is now at a point where she cannot accept any sort of plea or find resolution regardless of innocence to obtain this treatment,” Dudley wrote.

Jurinsky on July 21, said she doubted Niceta’s claims of poor health as soon as they were made public and described feeling vindicated by the information in the indictment.

“They created a fake hospital, for starters. Then they created a fake phone number for the fake hospital, a fake doctor to answer the fake phone number for the fake hospital, a fake Facebook page for the fake doctor for the fake hospital… I don’t even know what to say,” Jurinsky said. “I’m just on pins and needles with this woman. I’m always like, what’s next? You know? What’s next?”

The indictment was filed July 21 morning. As of Friday evening, Niceta’s next court date was scheduled to be the jury trial for her original criminal case, beginning Aug. 1. No court dates within the next six months had been posted for Dudley on the Colorado Judicial Branch’s website.

official representing an advocacy group opposed to the amendment.

“Many signers were misled to believe this was a term limits measure for city council, when in truth all the other language is an elaborate misdirection so that Mike Coffman can populate city government with some of the political friends he has accumulated over his 40 years in politics.”

Sponsors of the proposal have for the most part remained silent, ignoring and refusing to answer questions. Tyler Sandberg, who presented himself as a spokesperson for the group behind the proposal earlier this year, did not immedi-

ately respond to a request for comment.

Coffman broke his silence on the proposal Tuesday, saying in a statement that he supported it, while describing it first of all as a term-limit item.

“I believe, prospectively, that the residents of Aurora would be better served by reducing the term limits for our city’s elected officials to eight years instead of twelve,” he said.

“I also believe that the city of Aurora has dramatically changed and it’s time for our structure of government to change with it. Aurora is no longer a sleepy suburb but it’s now the 51st largest city in the United States with the urban challenges of race, poverty and crime that are better suited for a mayor/council form of government where the mayor, who is directly accountable to the people, is responsible for the operations of the government to include everything from the conduct of our police officers to providing the leadership necessary to achieve an aspirational vision for our city.”

Two individuals named as petition representatives in filings with the city clerk’s office have told the news media that Coffman initially approached them about getting involved in the campaign, and numerous other signs point to Coffman playing a leading role in the proposal. He did not immediately respond when asked what his involvement had been prior to Tuesday.Voters who believe their signatures were solicited improperly have until 5 p.m. Aug. 14 to submit a written protest to the clerk’s office.

A copy of any protest will be sent to the petition representatives, and a hearing will be scheduled between 10 and 20 days after the protest is mailed. Hearings will be open to the public, and the clerk will make her decision no later than 10 days after the end of the hearing, according to city clerk officials.

The city said in its press release that the “burden of proof is on the protestants to prove that the petition is insufficient.”

A protest form is available at auroragov.org/2023Elections and can be emailed to Aurora.Elections@ auroragov.org or else mailed physically or dropped off in person at the City Clerk’s Office, 1st Floor, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway, Aurora, CO, 80012.

City spokesman Ryan Luby said the date when the clerk’s office makes its final determination of sufficiency would depend on the outcome of protests and any litigation that could arise from the process.

Rep. Crow announces House panel approval of $11.6M in regional funding

More than $11.6 million in federal funding for social services, public safety, health care and other projects benefiting the metro Aurora

area has been approved by key U.S. House subcommittees.

The office of Rep. Jason Crow announced the approvals July 21, saying the action was the first step toward the 15 projects sponsored by Crow waiting for approval by the entire House.

“Delivering for Coloradans is my focus in Congress,” Crow said in a statement. “From new community hubs to much-needed infrastructure improvements, and expanded access to critical social services, this funding will meet Coloradans where they are and uplift families across the district. I’ll keep working to get these projects across the finish line.”

The projects supported by Crow include:

• $3 million to expand and improve library infrastructure at Aurora Public Library’s central location, including a new space for teens that will function as a community and youth hub.

• $1 million for Food Bank of the Rockies to address the needs of a new regional food bank facility and help expand its capacity to supply food to community partners and members of the public.

• $1 million for Gateway Domestic Violence Services to assist in the construction of two new buildings providing emergency shelter and supportive services to victims of domestic violence.

• $963,000 to assist Douglas County’s law enforcement response to community calls through the HEART Homeless Coordination Project and provide support to the homeless individuals contacted.

• $900,000 for the City of Aurora to relocate and make improvements on pressure-regulating valves installed in the 1950s and 1960s that are used to regulate pressure in potable water distribution systems, which has the potential to reduce water main breaks.

• $850,000 to support The Center for STEM, Power Mechanics and Applied Technologies workforce training and education space at Community College of Aurora in partnership with Aurora Public Schools and Construction Technology Early College High School.

• $850,000 to build a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Colo. 83 that connects the RTD Nine Mile Station to area residences and businesses, and provides safer access for pedestrians and cyclists.

• $840,000 for Community Firm to purchase a “Just Bus” mobile office that would provide integrated, supportive eviction and homelessness prevention services.

• $500,000 for the Colorado Asian Culture and Education Network to create the Mile High area’s first Asian American community center to provide immigrant and refugee services and increase the visibility of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

• $500,000 for Mile High United Way to upgrade the technology system needed for 211 Colorado to provide assistance to Coloradans needing financial assistance, childcare, housing, food and other needs.

• $455,400 to repair and replace right of ways in Bow Mar used to ac-

cess Denver Open Space that have deteriorated due to increased road traffic.

• $403,000 for the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center’s Rural eConsult program to expand the program to additional federally qualified health centers in rural Colorado, giving health providers the ability to conduct online consultations with specialists.

• $225,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver to support a specific STEM curriculum, supplies for space exploration and astronomy, and activities focused on space in partnership with subject matter experts.

• $138,000 to acquire new indoor and outdoor climate-controlled dog kennels for Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office canines, allowing the unit to house the dogs at the sheriff’s office and conduct trainings.

Colorado residents interested in early childhood and five other high-demand careers can get training for free starting this fall at more than a dozen community colleges around the state.

It’s part of a new $40 million state program called Career Advance Colorado that’s intended to mint thousands of workers in shortage areas. Besides early childhood education, the program will cover tuition, course materials, and fees

for up to two years of training for students studying education, construction, law enforcement, nursing, and fire and forestry.

“All these fields are in need of great folks to fill jobs that are open today and that are critical for our state’s success,” said Gov. Jared Polis in a recorded announcement about Career Advance.

The program is open to new students and those currently enrolled in one of the six target areas. For those already enrolled, the state will pay for their remaining coursework.

The offer of free training for prospective early childhood employees comes amid an ongoing shortage of child care and preschool teachers that’s led to shuttered classrooms at some centers. The need for qualified staff has become even more pressing as Colorado prepares to launch a major expansion of tuition-free preschool in August. More than 31,000 4-year-olds are expected to participate.

Career Advance is the latest effort by state policymakers to beef up the anemic pipeline of early childhood teachers. In recent years, the state used COVID stimulus money to pay for two introductory early childhood classes for hundreds of college students. It also offered scholarship and apprenticeship programs for students seeking early childhood credentials.

In Colorado, where the median preschool teacher wage is around $15.25 an hour, it’s hard to make a living in the early childhood field. The cost of college classes or student loan debt makes the barrier to entry even higher.

State officials and advocates recently have taken tentative steps towards addressing the field’s abysmal pay. As part of an effort to pay preschool teachers a living wage, the state pays a higher per-student rate in the new universal preschool

program than it pays public schools for each K-12 student. In addition, the state recently unveiled a report recommending a series of statewide early childhood salary scales that would significantly boost pay. For example, the suggested rate would be at least $22 an hour for early childhood teachers in metro Denver and some mountain communities. The salary scales are not binding for preschool and child care providers, but show what workers in different regions would need to earn to make a living wage.

Boy, 13, shot Tuesday while inside car in north Aurora

A 13-year-old boy was shot and injured early July 25, while inside a car in north Aurora, according to police.

The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, and his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening, according to police.

Police said the unidentified boy was inside a car while in the area of East 13th Avenue and Potomac Street with two other people when the shooting occurred, at approximately 1 a.m.

“It is not known what led up to the shooting and there are not yet any suspect descriptions,” police said in a social media post. “The two other people in the car were thankfully unharmed.”

Police said anyone with information can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.

The color of remembering

In the second annual Hero’s Journey 5K run/walk for the Zack Golditch Opportunity Scholarship, communities from neighboring cities like Longmont, Boulder or Colorado Springs came in support of the 7/20 foundation. The foundation supports the family and friends of Aurora theater shooting victims.

Heather Dearman, CEO of the Foundation, has kept a pledge to create unity rather than separation. Over time, her group of volunteers developed a grounded network and continues to grow as years pass. This is the 11th year since the shooting.

A variety of artists from all kinds of backgrounds contributed their work to create ‘Be the Light’ for this year’s annual chalk festival.

Actor and artist Tessa Fuqua participated in the event for the second time and shared her inspiration for being there. “This is my daughter, Makayla,” Tessa Fuqua said. “Her heart is light, and it shines out from her chest. She is a source of light for me and could also be for many.”

Ever since the 2012 Aurora mass shooting, parents, first responders, teachers and friends have banded together to establish a thriving group.

New AD at the “O”

THE ATHLETIC ROOTS RUN EXTREMELY DEEP FOR DOMONIC MARTINEZ, WHO HAS TAKEN OVER AS THE NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT OVERLAND HIGH SCHOOL

Domonic Martinez always hoped to return to Overland High School in a meaningful capacity.

That certainly is the case, as several years after he did his administrative internship at the venerable Aurora school, he is back as its newly-hired athletic director.

“This is just a natural fit,” Martinez told the Sentinel. “I did my administrative internship here (in 2005 or 2006) and I said ‘one day, I’m going to work at Overland.’ It didn’t happen that way until now, but it’s brought me back to where I started.”

The 48-year-old Martinez takes over for Karl Buck, who has moved on to the assistant principal/athletic director role at Centaurus High School in Lafayette. Buck held the job at Overland since 2019 when he was hired to replace Ryan Knorr after he departed for Durango.

And the best part for Martinez — who originally interviewed for an assistant principal job, but pivoted when the athletic director job opened — is that his role at Overland involves athletics, which is a gigantic presence in his family and got him through difficult times growing up in north Denver.

He hopes to help make athletics a positive part of the development of Overland students.

“I think there’s great opportunity here, especially after the pandemic. We need outlets and we need kids moving, and what better way than high school sports?,” said Martinez, who has also been an athletic director at Abraham Lincoln High School, North Middle School in Aurora and at Denver Prep Academy, which he helped found.

“It teaches them a whole set of skills that will

help them be a successful parent, a successful employee or employer,” he added.

“People always says kids nowadays are different and yeah, they are, but through sport we can still stay grounded and rooted.”

It is an understatement to say that athletics is part of the “root” of Martinez’s family.

His uncle, Gary Rhoades, starred at Denver West and then played at Colorado State from 1970-73. He was drafted by both the Denver Rockets of the ABA and Houston Rockets of the NBA in 1973 and played professionally overseas. Another uncle, Harold Rhoades, won a paralympic gold medal for wheelchair basketball in Heidelberg, West German, in 1972. His mother was a longtime competitive softball player as well and he had two brothers who played college basketball.

Martinez himself was a prep basketball star at Denver Lutheran — which he attended instead of Denver West, the traditional family school — earned a scholarship to play at Western State (where he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2016) and played four years in Mexico.

“Everything about me and my family have been rooted in sports,” said Martinez, whose father was a disabled veteran.

The winter season will be a busy one for Martinez, who will also try to keep tabs on his sons, who play basketball at Denver South. His oldest, Dominic Rhoades-Martinez, is a highly-regarded backcourt player going into his junior season, while the other, Matthew, is also one of the Ravens regulars.

Martinez will also spend plenty of time in the Overland gym watching longtime boys basketball coach Danny Fisher, one of the coaches he is most looking forward to being around.

Martinez — who has already made some splashes with coaching hires in Wondame Davis (girls basketball) and Mazen Kayali (soccer) — has specific goals for things he wants to work on at Overland both in the upcoming year as well as the future.

As part of an attempt to bolster the strength of the school’s athletic culture, he is looking forward to the establishment of an athlete leadership academy, which will be made possible by a recently secured grant. He also plans to try to engage with some of the school’s alumni to get more involved and maybe help contribute to strengthening the program.

Martinez’s greatest hope is that the promising young athletes near the school end up there, instead of going elsewhere via school of choice. Retention of neighborhood talent helped Overland — Aurora’s fifth-oldest high school — build success shortly after it opened in 1978.

Overland is just one of many schools that has been hurt by school of choice, which has allowed athletes freedom to go to schools in other districts if there is room. Martinez believes events such as youth sports camps on campus could help cut the number of departures.

“The kids in the area need to be around our athletes, so they want to be here,” he said. “Sometimes you have to be able to feel it, experience and taste it before you know you want it. I want them to be coached up by our players and our coaches, so they say ‘I was on the fence, but I want to go to Overland because I’ve got a connection there.’

“We want to build to where this is a place they stay instead of where they leave.”

Martinez is the only new high school athletic director in Cherry Creek Schools, as Steve Carpenter (Cherokee Trail), Jason Wilkins (Cherry Creek), Vince Orlando & Heather Nelsen (Eaglecrest), Wes Smock (Grandview) and John Thompson (Smoky Hill) remain.

BASKETBALL Ross, Lottie set to play basketball overseas

Former Eaglecrest basketball star Colbey Ross and ex-Cherokee Trail standout Jaizec Lottie are both headed to play basketball abroad after their runs in the NBA Summer League.

Ross had a strong stint with the Utah Jazz in the summer league as he averaged 12.2 points, 5.0 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game, but the smooth guard was not signed to a contract with Utah. Instead, he will head back overseas to play for KK Buducnost VOLI, which is based in Montenegro. KK Buducnost won the Montenegrin League for three straight seasons.

Ross also played abroad last year and was a standout in the Serie A Italian League with Pallacanestro Varese, where he started.

While Ross departs from Serie A, Lottie will join it this season as the 25-year-old signed with Givova Scafati Basket. Lottie — who played with BBC Monthey in Switzerland last year — was in Las Vegas with the Portland Trail Blazers.

O’Donnell, Gustin sign deals with MLB teams

The two players with Aurora prep ties that were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft — outfielder Ethan O’Donnell and pitcher Harry Gustin — have signed contracts with their teams.

O’Donnell, who helped Regis Jesuit win a Class 5A state championship before he went on to play at Northwestern and Virginia, went to the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round (No. 168 overall). The 21-year-old, lefty-swinging outfielder agreed to terms with the Reds on a contract worth $307,500, slightly less than the pick value for the spot according to MLB.com.

Gustin played just a handful of innings in four years at Smoky Hill before two strong seasons at the University of Hawaii earned him selection by the San Diego Padres. Taken in the 18th round (No. 551 overall), the 6-foot, 160-pound left-handed pitcher signed with the Padres for $150,000.

Players had until July 25 to sign contracts or return to school if they still had eligibility.

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL Magnolia Bowl contested to conclude summer league play

With girls flag football set to start soon during the fall prep sports season — as a pilot sport — local players got some good preparation with a 7v7 summer league that wrapped July 21.

Eight teams squared off Heritage High School in the inaugural Magnolia Bowl, which included a team from Eaglecrest as well as a combo team

called the Aurora Arsenal.

The team that won the Magnolia Bowl championship — Northfield — also had local representation in recent Vista PEAK grad Leilani Caamal.

Girls flag football is set for a major expansion in the upcoming season, as all districts and schools will be able to field teams. The Denver Broncos have been big backers of the sport and recently held an informational meeting at Empower Field.

Locals compete in Optimist International tourneys in Florida

Former Cherokee Trail girls golf

standout Kaleigh Babineaux is set to play in the girls 16-18 portion of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships starting July 26.

Golfers from around the globe qualified for the tournament and one of those is Babineaux, who tied for eighth place at the Class 5A girls state golf tournament in May. She told the Sentinel she will move to Texas to play next year, however.

Babineaux is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. ET on Hole No. 1 on the Red Tiger course at the Trump National Doral Resort and Spa in Miami, Florida. The tournament will conclude July 29.

Area qualifiers also played in the boys 14-15 Optimist tournament,

which wrapped up July 23. Cherokee Trail sophomore-to-be Brayden Forte led the way among locals as he tied for 19th place. He shot 79 on the Golden Palm course in the first round July 21, then played the Blue Monster Course and shot 75 and 74 for a three-day total of 228. Forte was joined in the top 20 by some good Colorado representation as Billy Ver Straate from Lone Tree finished fourth (at 216), while Grand Junction’s Hunter Simmons was a shot better than Forte to finish 18th.

Forte’s Cherokee Trail teammate, sophomore-to-be Dalton Sisneros, shot rounds of 82, 77 and 77 to finish in a tie for 41st, while Eaglecrest’s Greg White opened with

FALL SPORTS Boys golf practice gets underway July 31

The first sport for the 2023 fall prep sports season begins on July 31 with the first day of boys golf tryouts and practice. Competition is not far behind on the course, as tournaments can begin on Aug. 3. The remainder of practices for fall sports (football, softball, boys soccer, girls volleyball, cross country, boys tennis, spirit, field hockey, gymnastics, Unified bowling and girls flag football) start Aug. 7 with competition to follow.

Two Aurora programs — Eaglecrest and Regis Jesuit — qualified as teams for last season’s Class 5A boys golf tournament and finished fifth and 15th, respectively. Eaglecrest had two underclassmen in Greg White and Noah Bennett, while Regis Jesuit had only one underclassman at state in Roland Thornton. Cherokee Trail had two underclassmen that made it to state in Brayden Forte and Christopher O’Donnell, while Grandview had one in Michael Rosman.

PRICE WAR

Vast majority of residents across the state fret about the cost of housing, living

Worries about the cost of living and housing affordability topped the list of concerns for most Coloradans in 2023, according to findings from the fourth-annual Pulse Poll commissioned by the Colorado Health Foundation.

Not only do the cost of living and housing press heavily on the minds of so many Colorado residents, but even those residents considered well-to-do or even wealthy share in the worry, according to survey results.

The findings come as Aurora is trying to build its inventory of affordable housing and keep more people from joining the ranks of homelessness.

Between April 8 and May 3, a bipartisan team of CHF researchers collected responses from 2,639 Coloradans that showed persistently high living costs and housing affordability are presenting a ripple effect across multiple aspects of daily life and fueling worries for the state’s future generations.

CHF is releasing an analysis of Coloradans’ top concerns this month to be followed in August by a deep-dive analysis of other key find-

ings and in September with an emphasis on the perspectives of Hispanic and Latino respondents.

On one hand, concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic that took center stage in 2020 and 2021 have been erased, with less than 1% of respondents citing the pandemic as a concern in 2023.

But the pandemic “was not the only contagion that swept through Colorado in the last several years,” said Lori Weigel, a Republican pollster for Pulse and principal of New Bridge Strategy.

“In a three-year span, housing costs have spread from the concern of local workers in mountain resort communities to a top-tier statewide issue. In every region of the state — from the Eastern Plains, to the Front Range, to the Western Slope — and with virtually every single demographic group, the cost of living and cost of housing are the great uniters as the top-of-mind concerns.”

›› Continues on 16

Asked to describe in an open-ended question and in their own words the most important issue facing Colorado right now, 16% of respondents brought up the cost of living and 15% mentioned housing affordability, followed by politics, homelessness, public safety and other topics.

Reinforcing these concerns, when asked to rank a series of specific problems facing Colorado, all four of the top issues relate to increasing costs and housing. Respondents ranked “the rising cost of living” and “the cost of housing” at the top of the list with 85% and 82%, respectively, saying the problems are extremely serious or very serious.

Concerns about the cost of living are 8% higher for renters, 6% higher for Latinos and 4% higher for people living on low incomes. Concerns about the cost of housing are 16% higher for Native Americans and 11% higher for renters and people living on low incomes.

A report commissioned by the City of Aurora, and released in late 2020, indicated residents needed to make more than $50,000 per year to afford the average rent, which was about $10,000 more than the average renter’s income.

At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was in fullswing, the report also said the city needed more than 10,200 units of affordable housing to serve all households earning less than $20,000. The problem predated the pandemic, however — in 2017, the city was said to have a shortfall of roughly 7,500 units for renters making less than $25,000 per year.

The city is in the process of implementing recommendations included in the report.

On July 20, the city invited proposals to develop properties at 15961 E. Colfax Ave. and 15978 E. 16th Ave. into affordable housing, part of a project to build about 600 units across multiple sites.

As of July 24, city spokesman Michael Brannen says the city estimated it needs about 7,500 more units of affordable housing to meet demand.

Since 2020, the cost of housing as an extreme or very serious problem has risen from 67% to 82%, with 51% of respondents citing it as an extremely serious problem in 2023 compared to just 37% in 2020. Relatedly, the rising cost of living was ranked as an extremely serious or very serious problem by 85% of those surveyed.

Despite the waning pandem-

ic, concerns about the ability to afford living in Colorado have persisted. Today, many Coloradans are doubting not only their ability to own homes but also their children’s ability to afford living in Colorado, with 83% of those making more than $50,000 worried about whether their children will be able to afford living in the state.

Results align with recent polls and analyses, including the annual U.S. News & World Report released in May that revealed Denver and select cities across Colorado — recently ranked among the Top 10 most desirable and livable cities in the country — are falling further down the rankings. Ultimately, concerns and changes detailed in the 2023 Pulse Poll may provide some insight into the changing face of Colorado in the years ahead.

“Concerns about the cost of living are not only a source of anxiety for Coloradans today, they are also dimming their hopes for the future,” said Dave Metz, a Democratic pollster for Pulse and president of FM3 Research.

Metz mentioned how nearly two in five Coloradans described “just getting by financially” and that more than one-quarter are worried about

losing their home because they can’t afford it.

“Looking toward the future, the view is even darker,” he said. “Most renters who want to own a home doubt they will ever be able to purchase one in Colorado, and more than four in five parents are worried about whether their children will be able to afford to stay here at all. Coloradans not only have low expectations for a rapid turnaround on the cost of living — they worry that the state’s housing challenges could become generational.”

Closely following the cost of living and housing are concerns related to “homelessness” and “the cost of health care” with

79% and 69% respectively saying the problems are extremely serious or very serious. These related cost concerns have continued to increase incrementally in recent years and are even more common within specific demographics.

For instance, concerns about homelessness are 13% higher for Native Americans and 7% higher for Latinos, while concern about the cost of health care is 16% higher for people who are struggling to get by and 10% higher for Asian-American and Pacific Islander respondents. Additionally, concerns about homelessness as an extreme or very serious problem have risen from 67% in 2020 to 79% in 2023.

“More people are feeling more insecure about their ability to afford housing at the same time that more people are experiencing homelessness, and specifically unsheltered homelessness,” said Cathy Alderman, chief communications and public policy officer for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

“So as Colorado as a state becomes less affordable to people, and particularly in Denver, we’re seeing not just the fear that people have about not being able to afford housing, but the reality that they can’t afford housing because they’re entering the cycle of homelessness.”

Results of the 2023 pointin-time count of homeless residents across the Denver metro area that were released this month show a surge in homelessness regionally, from 4,806 staying in shelters and 2,078 sleeping outside in 2022 to 6,302 and 2,763 respectively in 2023. Aurora’s stated homeless population declined over the same period, from 311 sheltered and 301 unsheltered to 409 sheltered and 163 unsheltered.

Service providers generally treat point-in-time figures as an undercount. Alderman said it can be difficult to draw conclusions about the data obtained from the survey, which is conducted by volunteer teams who have one night to find and count as many sheltered and unsheltered homeless residents as possible.

However, she said a real increase in the number of homeless people around Denver would make sense given the impacts of COVID-era protections for renters being allowed to expire.

“I’m not surprised to see the numbers across the region increase,” she said. “We’ve known that the numbers are increasing.

And we certainly know that the federal funding for eviction prevention and rental subsidies running out meant that more people were going to lose their homes, and so more people were going to enter a cycle of homelessness. We’ve kind of been bracing for that all along the way.”

She said the apparent decrease in the number of homeless people in Aurora could also reflect the fact that more shelters are located in Denver or that some homeless campers may have relocated to less visible areas in response to the city’s ban on unauthorized camping that was introduced last year.

As people increasingly worry about their ability to afford the cost of living, they are less concerned about the broader economic picture. Concerns about jobs and the economy, considered an extremely serious or very serious problem by 63% in 2020, have fallen to 48% in 2023.

Housing concerns are impacting day-to-day decisions, particularly for those living on low incomes, with significant portions of the population afraid of losing their home or making tough decisions to be able to afford housing.

On July 24, Emily Fuller from Aurora Housing and Community Services told the council that the city has already spent close to $250,000 this year to prevent evictions and help pay the movein costs for households through the city’s Flexible Housing Fund — one of the only local resources of its kind. She said funds are typically exhausted within 24 hours of the application portal opening each month.

Nearly 3 in 10 respondents to the CHF poll said they are worried they could lose their home in the coming year because they can’t afford rent or mortgage, including one in five people making more than $50,000 per year.

That number is up 6% from 2020. About 15% of respondents have either moved because they couldn’t afford their housing or lived with a roommate, friends, or family when they’d rather not. These tough decisions more than double for people living on low incomes.

For those in Generation Z, the oldest of which are pushing 26 years of age, almost onethird said they have to live with a roommate or a friend to afford rent or a mortgage.

Renters appear to be bearing the brunt of this cost crisis, with 85% aspiring to own a home but most of those people saying they do not think it’s likely they will

ever be able to purchase a home in Colorado. Nearly half say they are working multiple jobs or more hours than they’d like in order to be able to pay their rent.

While concerns about housing are widespread, Coloradans’ actual experiences with the state’s housing market suggest that some groups are navigating other challenges in addition to soaring costs when trying to find a place to live.

About one in four Coloradans trying to rent or purchase a place to live say they have experienced unfair treatment, either personally or with someone they know, as a result of their race or ethnicity. This is true for six in 10 Native Americans, nearly half of African Americans, and nearly four in 10 Latinos.

The high cost of living is touching all aspects of Coloradans’ lives. About 40% say they are “just getting by financially,” including more than one in 10 describing themselves as “really struggling.” Another 40% of respondents say they are “worse off financially” than a year ago.

About one in three respondents say they are worried they might not be able to afford enough food to feed themselves or their families, including a quarter of all people making more than $50,000 per year. This worry is much high-

er among people living on less though, at 60%; Native Americans, at 55%; renters, at 51%; and Latinos, at 47%. Overall, 14% of respondents said they had skipped meals because they couldn’t afford food versus just 9% in 2021.

Karen McNeill-Miller, president and CEO of The Colorado Health Foundation, said the 2023 survey showed a “worrying picture” of Colorado residents compromising their healthy and long-term economic stability to accommodate the cost of living.

“These tradeoffs are even more common among people of color and those living on low income,” she said. “We want local and state officials to understand the stories behind these data, as they highlight policy opportunities that are essential for improving opportunities for everyone in our state.”

Respondents also shared what policy solutions they wanted to see to address the cost of housing, 80% said they considered lowering property taxes for people on low or fixed incomes to be effective, while 75% expressed support for rules preventing landlords from rapidly raising rents, 68% endorsed more funding for programs that prevent people from becoming homeless and 67% supported making it harder to evict tenants

who haven’t violated their lease. A majority of respondents also said they would support making affordable housing more available by changing zoning laws to make it easier to build more housing close to job and transportation hubs, requiring developers to build housing for people with lower income levels and speeding up permitting and inspection processes for developers building housing for low-income people.

The unsung pawpaw is a delicious, low-maintenance, native N. American fruit tree

Looking to plant something unusual, easy to grow and exotically delicious? Let me introduce you to Asimina triloba, the pawpaw tree.

Also known as Hoosier banana, poor man’s banana and false banana, the sadly underused fruit tree will transport you to the tropics, its 12-by-5-inch, droopy, dark green leaves swaying in the breeze.

Except it isn’t tropical at all. The pawpaw is a North American native.

Found growing wild from southern Ontario and Michigan east to western New York and south to Texas and Florida, pawpaws are hardy in horticultural zones 4-8 or 5-9, depending on the variety. The small, pyramid-shaped trees top out at about 25 feet tall, love humid-

ity and are highly frost-tolerant.

Odd-smelling maroon blossoms reminiscent of fermented grapes cover the branches in spring, followed by clusters of heavy, 3-to5-inch-long fruits that look like mangoes. In autumn, the trees’ vibrant yellow or gold foliage will brighten your landscape. And deer tend to avoid them.

The pawpaw is about as low-maintenance as a fruit tree could be. Select a sunny to partly sunny spot that offers some wind protection, and plant it in well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH level between 5.5 and 5.7. Water young trees regularly for a year or two until they’re established, and apply a 2020-20 fertilizer once a month in April, May and June only. As far as care, the only other thing you’ll want to do is remove suckers that grow around the base of the tree. Pawpaws are not invasive but will form a thicket if left unchecked.

In most cases, you’ll need to grow two different pawpaw cultivars to ensure cross-pollination and fruit production. Seek out grafted, named cultivars, such as Davis, Mary Foos Johnson, Overleese, Sweet Alice and Taylor, which will bear fruit in a couple of years, as opposed to seed-grown trees, which can take as long as six to 10 years to produce. Sunflower is a rare self-fertile variety that theoretically should bear fruit if planted solo but would be

more reliable if paired with a mate. Avoid buying balled-and-burlapped trees, which are grown in fields and then dug up for sale; the practice risks damage to pawpaws’ long taproots, impacting their ability to take up water effectively.

Harvest the fruits in late summer when they are soft to the touch and detach easily. To outsmart birds and other wildlife that may try to swipe perfectly ripe fruit, you can pick them a little before they are completely ready, and the last bit will ripen soon afterward. But hard pawpaws picked too early will not fully ripen off the tree.

Some folks swear pawpaws taste like bananas; others insist their flavor is more papaya-like. Regardless, the highly nutritious, creamy fruits, rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids, can be eaten raw or used in any recipe calling for bananas, such as puddings, smoothies, muffins, cakes and breads. Just discard the fruit’s thick skin and seeds, as they contain toxins.

If you’re curious about tasting pawpaws but aren’t ready to grow them, you’re probably out of luck. The perishable fruits keep for just a few days, making it impractical to transport them, so you won’t find them at your local supermarket.

Just about the only way to experience them is to grow them yourself.

How to extend the growing season in your garden and get multiple veggie harvests

I harvested my hardneck garlic crop earlier this month, which opened up some prime real estate in the garden, leaving me with an entire 4-by-4-foot raised bed to replant.

As I was settling Eight Ball squash seedlings into the space, it occurred to me that I was inadvertently practicing what is known as “succession planting,” a term that can apply to a few different strategies intended to extend the growing season.

One approach refers to planting a second garden in the space vacated by early-maturing crops, as I’d done in my garlic bed.

Another strategy involves sowing herb or vegetable seeds at regular intervals, rather than all at once, to ensure multiple or continued harvests throughout the season. This is especially helpful for one-off root crops, like beets, carrots, radishes and turnips, and for cut-and-come-again greens like Swiss chard, kale and leaf lettuces.

You can also maximize your harvests of edibles like basil, bok choi, cilantro, cucumbers, dill, lettuces, mizuna, mustards, spinach, squash and Swiss chard, even in colder climates, by planting more now, as long as seeds are sown at least 50-75 days before frost sets in. Otherwise, you can opt for starter plants instead of seeds, which would give you a weather-defying head start.

Succession planting is a great way to avoid the feast-or-famine yields that result from planting all your seeds or starter plants at the same time in spring and ending up with more cucumbers (or tomatoes, watermelons or zucchini) than you can reasonably use at once.

When planting in spring, give some thought to

how much of each crop you’ll consume in a given week, then stagger plantings a week apart so that you meet but don’t exceed that target.

You can also plant early-, mid- and late-ripening varieties of one crop early in the season. This way, you’ll have a steady supply of tomatoes or corn, for instance, instead of waiting all summer for the payoff.

Before planting a mid-season crop, as I’ve done with my squash, familiarize yourself with your horticultural zone’s ( https://planthardiness.ars. usda.gov/ ) first frost date. On the U.S. mainland, the earliest fall frost is expected around Sept. 8 in Zone 3. In Zone 9, however, it doesn’t typically arrive until the end of December.

Armed with your first frost date, check seed packets or plant tags for the “days to maturity” information listed, then calculate how much growing time is left in your season and select varieties that fit into the window.

Succession planting isn’t limited to edibles. Sunflowers can be sown a week apart during spring and early summer to supply you with continuous blooms. Gardeners in Zones 7 and warmer can still plant them now.

Gladiolus, whose corms are usually planted in early spring, typically takes 10-12 weeks to grow and bloom. Plant them throughout the growing season in two-week intervals until 12 weeks before your first frost date, and you’ll enjoy at least three months of nonstop flowers.

Calla lilies, marigolds, nasturtiums, snapdragons, sweet peas and zinnias also can be planted (or replanted) now. Just get a move on before your window closes.

KAREN DESANTIS: CITY OF AURORA’S LPGA PRO AND WOMEN’S GOLF PIONEER

aren DeSantis knew early on in becoming a golf pro, the journey would take her far beyond the course.

Almost 40 years after starting down that path, she’s arrived.

“It was just something I wanted real badly,” DeSantis said. “I just loved it.”

She has the same passion now as she did when she first picked up her own club: Grow the game and make it more accessible to any who might want to try it, especially women. DeSantis’ dedication to the game, and a welcoming and helpful demeanor to those who come to her for guidance, has long been her trademark teaching and coaching on Aurora courses.

Her love for the game started at 31. She would go out to courses with her husband, Carl DeSantis, to spend time with him while he played. She got bored watching and wanted to try it out herself. She took lessons and never looked back.

She once thought of going on tour, but money mattered, and teaching, and the stable income that comes with it was more appealing.

DeSantis started certification from the Ladies Professional Golf Association. In order to do that, she needed to work at least part-time at a golf course to gain experience and earn no less than an associate’s degree in a business–related field. So she got to work.

Beginning as a part-time instructor at Springhill Golf Course in 1980, where DeSantis teaches today, she had to work nights as a server at Red Lobster to supplement her income. All the while,

Kshe went to Pickens Technical Institute in Aurora to get her associate’s degree in management of technology.

“It was a struggle, but I was pretty young,” DeSantis said. “Teaching just became my outlet. When I was on the lesson tee, I was in my own world and my own boss.”

Helping people solve a problem with a swing or a putt was as satisfying as her own personal wins.

By 1984, she was officially an LPGA Pro.

While she worked toward her LPGA Pro certification at Meadow Hills Golf Course — where she worked for a few years between stints at Springhill — DeSantis noticed the virtual dearth of female players. Tee times were dominated by men, especially on weekends when working women had time off, too, and could theoretically take tee times of their own.

She wanted to see more women in golf, so she decided to take action.

DeSantis came up with a proposal to the then Head PGA Pro of Meadow Hills, Mickey Byrne: developed a program that encouraged women to learn the game, socialize, have fun and, ultimately, compete.

Byrne was all for it. After he and DeSantis got the OK from the City of Aurora’s manager of golf, Dennis Lyon, the Working Women’s program was up and running in 1984.

In its inaugural season, there were about 45 members. By the second season, it exploded to more than 100 members. With the boost in popularity and a novel idea, Aurora Hills Golf Course offered their course to the group.

Today, more than 150 Working Women rotate rounds between all five Aurora city municipal golf courses every weekend, backed by the Colorado Women’s Golf Association.

Over time, DeSantis realized the effect of bringing more women into golf was about much more than just the game. Many women who came to play were leaders in their industries. Some were bringing clients out to courses to play. Not only were women learning to play golf, but also about the social intricacies of golf that can often drive business connections.

Most important, though, were the friendly, casual relationships on the course that women could make with other women.

“(The social aspect) is very important,” DeSantis said. “There’s still to this day so many women that want to go and play with other women, but don’t have an outlet. So that’s where the Working Women’s (program) came into play. … It kind of expanded and blew up, and now there’s all kinds of ladies groups that you can join.”

Though female participation in golf has been growing slowly since DeSantis has been a pro, the COVID-19 pandemic is where it really began to skyrocket. The National Golf Foundation reported that in 2019, there were 5.6 million female golfers. Today, there are 6.4 million, a 15% increase in the female player base in comparison to a 2% increase in male players during that time period.

“Way unexpected,” DeSantis said. “I mean, the lessons went crazy, the rounds went crazy. Most of it was because it was one of the few sports that

It’s the final Sounds of Southlands for the summer, so you’ll not want to miss your last opportunity. That 80’s Band will be cranking out your favorite alt and pop rock from the penultimate decade of the twentieth century.

As you’re chillaxin to the sweet nostalgic rhythms of deep bass and synthesizers, help yourself to a beverage or some tasty bites, and then head out to the dance floor to cut a rug.

July 28-30 in Fairplay. Visit burrodays.org for more information

We realize that dedicating a weekend, this weekend to be specific, to one of the West’s weirder creatures is a little odd. But folks, this is Fairplay we’re talking about. Everything in this old mining outpost on the desolate high plains of Park County is a little off-kilter. And besides, they’ve been doing this Burro Days thing since the first half of the 20th century, so they must be onto something. If you need more of an excuse, try this: 10,000 people can’t be wrong, and each year it’s roughly that five-figure total of folks who make the trek for burros, barbecue and grub.

Beat the Rush and Hike the 13ers Like a Pro

It’s hot down here. It’s crowded down here. And if you’re thinking about hitting up Bierstadt or Grays and Torreys, it’s likely to be crowded up there.

Bagging 14ers, native and long-timer lingo for climbing the state’s highest peaks, is so popular that hikes to places like Mt. Bierstadt and Quandary are more like mass marches than exceptional getaways — even during the week. A little lower can get you plenty high. Colorado’s 13ers are far more plentiful and often much more sedate.

Underground Music Showcase 2023

Beginning at 3:00 p.m. July 28 through 10:00 p.m. July 30 along the South Broadway Corridor. Visit https://www.undergroundmusicshowcase.com/ for more information.

Denver’s longest running music festival returns to South Broadway. For more than 20 years, UMS has been treating Denver’s music scene to a terrific weekend filled with with names big and small and this year’s festy is no different.

More than 150 bands will be performing on main stages and in venues along the South Broadway corridor, including nationally touring acts such as Crumb, Jamila Woods and Emmit Fenn.

There are a limited number of tickets remaining, so be sure to check out their website and scoop them up if you are interested in taking part in this music-filled weekend.

Just a two-hour drive from A-Town, Byers Peak, just outside of Fraser, makes for an accessible and validating tally on the 13er score card. Another favorite relatively close to Aurora is Mummy Mountain, located in Rocky Mountain National Park beside Estes Park. Though less-frequented, Colorado’s 13,000-foot peaks still require gobs of respect, preparation and endurance.

Go low or lower, skip the crowds and hike Colorado’s quieter 13ers. Mostly free, all over the state. Visit climbingcooneys.com, www.fs.usda.gov for more information.

10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. July 30 100 W. 14th Ave. Denver, CO 80204. Visit www.denverartmuseum.org for more information.

The time has come once again for the monthly free day at The Denver Art Museum. As is tradition, there are a bevy of exhibitions showing that are captivating, to say the least.

Per usual, guests will have access to the permanent exhibits, but this month y’all can check out “Desert Rider,” “Islands Beyond Blue,” “Arts of Africa Gallery” and “Her Brush” which is a collection of works from Japanese women artists.

Tickets can be reserved ahead of time or picked up once you arrive.

people could still come out (and play). … I think it introduced a lot of people back into the sport.”

She has taught LPGA 101, a beginner’s golf lessons program for women and their families, since its inception in 2019. That’s when she began to work with Dan O’Shaughnessy, who took over as Head PGA Pro at Springhill in 2020.

O’Shaughnessy, whose main goal is to expose the game to as many people as possible, built a dedicated learning area in 2021 for DeSantis and others to teach newcomers. Even though 70-year-old DeSantis retired in 2021, O’Shaughnessy has kept the door open for her to teach on weekends, a nod to the value she brings to the course.

Plus, DeSantis doesn’t think she’ll ever stop wanting to teach.

“I would say Karen is a bit of an anomaly in that she still loves to teach after” 40 years in the business, O’Shaughnessy said. “A lot don’t. … (She’s) passionate about teaching, helping golfers, giving them the tools for starting out. She’s just really good at knowing what to give people and how much to give them, so (students) aren’t overwhelmed.”

That passion and knack for teaching is what got Liz Vonau to stick around for a five-lesson course from DeSantis.

Vonau had a little experience golfing as a teenager with her father, but she never got into it. Last summer, at 41, she decided to jump back in. She wanted to take up something outdoorsy, and with her father still being an avid

golfer, she wanted to be able to do that with him.

One of the only ways to get better at golf is to go out and play a course, but for many new golfers, doing so can be intimidating at first. According to Vonau, DeSantis has a flair for making the learning process more comfortable.

“She really taught you the basics, but then also taught you to not be intimidated,” Vonau said. “It was just like building that confidence of (saying) if you hit well, you don’t need to hit far. (She) really makes you feel like you don’t have to be the best player, you don’t have to be the farthest hitter to go and play and have fun.”

A year after taking lessons from DeSantis, Vonau still plays with her dad every week.

Karen said her husband mentored her during her career in golf, as they traveled across the country during winters to play as she got better at the game. Her fondest memories were when she and Carl played golf in Hawaii on two occasions to celebrate anniversaries. This year will be their 40th anniversary.

DeSantis said that her proudest accomplishments were earning her LPGA Pro certification and becoming the first assistant golf pro at Springhill when she moved back there from Meadow Hills in 1987.

“To have the opportunity that they gave me was just such a blessing,” DeSantis said. “I’ve never regretted it, I never regretted getting into the LPGA. I’ve been around the city so long that I don’t go somewhere where I don’t meet someone, and they tell me a story.”
