There was no presidential debate winner. In fact, there were no survivors.

Well, on the bright side, Joe Biden and Democrats quickly dispensed with the false Donald Trump rumors about a “Juiced Joe” barreling onto the debate stage last night.

Had Biden not been a sitting US president volunteering to subject himself to what CNN thinks passes for a presidential debate, or even journalism, the event would have had all the earmarks of felony elder abuse.

Could Biden’s campaign team, or even someone backstage with an ounce of sympathy, not have gotten that very, very tired old man a cup of tea, or a Lifesaver or even a sip of water?

And after days of preparing for this, after a lifetime of being in the public eye, and knowing that almost everyone in the free world was watching Biden, was there no one on the debate coaching staff to teach the guy to not stand there and stare vacant-eyed with his mouth open?

Job One Thursday night for Biden was to persuade the nation he is not too old to run the country. Instead, Biden effectively convinced the nation that he’s too old to drive a car or safely operate a can opener.

It’s not, however, as if Donald Trump won the debate. There was no winner. In fact, there were no survivors.

The first casualties of the evening were CNN “debate” hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. They clearly spent far more time on coifs, makeup and wardrobe than they did creating questions that would serve the public’s need to know details about two people on the short list for the most important job on the planet.

The questions sounded like they were created by Chat GPT rather than living, breathing journalists.

The national press corps in North Korea and Russia ask far more penetrating questions of leaders in those countries than Americans witnessed with CNN’s version of “Kids Say The Darndest Things.”

To their credit, they were able to correctly narrate the timers limiting each of the candidates’ rantings, panting, delusions and what might even have been petit mal seizures.

If ever there were a compelling argument in favor of the death of TV news, Bash and Tapper offered every part of it.

Americans would have been much better served with queries like, “So, what’s your favorite color?” than voters were by moderators’ robotic stares after Trump ranted about Biden being responsible for Trump being blamed for causing and participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

All they did was stare while allowing Trump to erupt like explosive diarrhea all over the debate stage. Americans could only watch as the Trump “lie-o-meter” spin like the “this purchase” reel on the gas pump on Parker Road, while the debate moderators let him, with a pleasant smile.

Trump came off like a living warning label on the danger of drinking too much Red Bull.

While Biden came off like the guy unable to make it back to the grouphome van after a shopping field trip to Walgreens, Trump made it clear that his grip on reality, once tenuous, is now gone.

Trump is in cogent freefall, reacting to the virtual reality show he and his cronies have created as if it were real, or even loosely based on reality.

He breathtakingly tried, for months, to overturn his own election and step into a second term as the nation’s first dictator.

He denies and sidesteps the fact that even the far-right allies he collected as he went into the White House and held hostage have come out in droves to testify in courtrooms, depositions and their own missives about how corrupt, uneducated, and malevolent Trump was as the nation’s dullard president.

Trump was as insightful and meaningful as a toy gun firing blasts of confetti stamped with fortune-cookie wisdoms like, “Gaza would never have happened,” and, “I know you are but what am I?” and, “The bad weather is because of Hunter Biden’s laptop.”

Who, in their right mind, would trust someone behaving like Trump to hand out candy to kids on Halloween, let alone hold the nuclear codes. This is a man that kept state secrets in his Mar-a-Lago poo poo and then lied about it.

CNN provided nothing more than a 90-minute documentary on the failure of the American two-party political system and why TV news is no more valuable to the public for accuracy, context and accountability than Trump’s own Truth Social account.

Americans deserve a do-over here.

Call in the reporters from Aurora’s Rangeview High School and get these candidates on a roundtable with some water bottles to let those journalists, far more qualified and capable, get straight answers from two sorriest presidential candidates in American history.

Supreme Court undermines the core of US government

The U.S. Supreme Court ended its session Monday not just with a bang, but with the nuclear annihilation of one of the most critical tenets of American government as it was created in 1776: the preclusion of an American king.

Six conservative activist jurors on the high court picked up where Richard Nixon once left off when he declared aloud that Americans in the 1970s wanted to know if he, as president, was a crook.

“I am not a crook,” Nixon famously, and erroneously said. His warped logic, mistaken at the time, was that if the president did something, it could not be illegal.

On Monday, the high court majority rekindled and enshrined that ludicrous and nefarious tenet, declaring that President Trump is not a crook, because he was a president.

In the historical 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump, as president, is immune from criminal prosecution for trying to force then Vice president Mike Pence to undermine the will of voters in several states by contriving to change the actual results of the election and make Trump president again.

What was once an absurd and darkly comical supposition by lawyers and justices even considering the question of Trump’s absolute immunity has now become fodder for public alarm.

Months ago, a lower court in the case was asked whether such nonsense as absolute presidential immunity would make it legal for a president to assassinate a political rival, Trump’s lawyers answered, “yes.”

Writing for the conservative majority on the high court yesterday, including Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, both sullied by recent pro-trump political scandals, Chief Justice John Roberts backed such a dangerous and risible notion.

Roberts and complicit justices agreed that Trump should be immune from prosecution for trying to force Pence to overthrow Congress and undermine the election so he could stay in power, and that even Trump’s actions as a criminal could not be used as evidence against him. The argument is indefensible.

Nowhere in American history from the Founding Fathers forward has there been any push for or suggestion of absolute immunity for the chief executive, before or after he or she leaves office.

We agree with Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who wrote, “In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law. Because our Constitution does not shield a former president from answering for criminal and treasonous acts, I dissent.”

She and hundreds of critics said the foul ruling “makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of government, that no man is above the law.”

In what is the worst of all possible scenarios, should Trump be elected again, he would have free rein to turn the power and forces of the U.S. government against his enemies and critics, without fear of reprisal or accountability.

And this is a man who has repeatedly, publicly, threatened to do just that.

Trump would be permitted by activists on the Supreme Court to operate death squads by using his official powers as president to initiate such terrorism.

The ruling justifiably strikes fear in millions of Americans who worry they could be construed as enemies of Trump and his so-called MAGA nation and be subjected to his infamous malevolent whims.

For those political leaders who currently feel smugly confident in their value to Trump, look at the long and growing list of the enemies Trump has openly sworn against, all Republicans and often former allies in his own White House.

Those who are currently confident about staying in Trump’s good graces ignore his mercurial recent past.

Members of Congress in both houses and from both parties should immediately convene with qualified legal scholars to create a constitutional remedy to the crisis this rogue court has created.

No political party, no American, no nation can survive a government that allows its chief executive unlimited power and absolute immunity not just for committing crimes against citizens or even the nation, but even precluding prosecution for conspiring to undermine the very threads of democracy that have bound the United States for more than two centuries.

aid social worker shortage

Colorado’s demand for mental health workers jumped 152% from 2019 to 2022, with pandemic-induced mental health issues continuing to strain already overworked social workers. The state has taken steps to ameliorate the shortage, including joining the social work licensure compact to remove red tape for social workers to practice across state lines.

Colorado’s Senate Bill 24-115, which goes into effect this August, is another move toward progress. The bill eliminates the need for students studying social work to pass a masters’ examination, which has been scrutinized for measuring test-taking skills rather than actual understanding of the material. Critics of the master’s exam have said it discriminates against older adults and those who have disabilities or anxiety around tests.

SB 24-115 simplifies the licensure process and allows more social workers to enter the field. But more needs to be done. As a social worker with decades of experience, I keenly feel the need for a community-wide push toward change. That starts with understanding what drives the shortage: finances.

Licensed social workers must obtain their Master of Social Work (MSW) and meet specific continuing education and licensure requirements. An MSW can cost upward of $100,000 over two years. It’s no surprise that students aren’t choosing a career in social work amid continued inflation and an employee-friendly job market. While SB 24-115 lifts some of the financial burden from social workers by taking away the test, more needs to be done, and state agencies need to act.

First, organizations need to pay interns, an example of a small change to an old practice that could have a significant impact. Even though most internships in the U.S. offer some compensation, most social work internships are unpaid. While not every agency can afford to pay interns, those with endowments and other such resources available should prioritize compensating students for their work.

Second, state agencies need to collaborate with licensed social workers to make the best use of the existing workforce. Just as physicians work with nurse practitioners to manage workloads, licensed social workers can collaborate with social workers who don’t have an MSW but have taken accredited certification programs. While they may not be qualified to administer clinical or therapeutic behavioral

mental health services, they can help the vulnerable access other resources, including housing assistance or employment.

Third, the state government must put more money into social work schools and scholarships to ease the financial burden on aspiring social workers. SB 24-115’s removal of expensive licensure exams is a wonderful first step – but it is one step closer to success, not a leap across the finish line.

As SB 24-115 recognizes, fixing the shortage starts with repairing the talent pipeline. By creating smoother pathways into the field, we can attract more talent to our institutions and, eventually, our communities. The stakes are high: The shortage of social workers disproportionately impacts low-income families, furthering inequities across our state. While public systems provide essential financial and mental support to these communities, much of it is mediated through social workers. Without the luxury of access to private alternatives, low-income individuals have little choice but to wait for overworked and understaffed public agencies.

Colorado’s social worker shortage results in high caseloads, which ultimately hurt clients and causes burnout. Social workers carrying a high number of cases can no longer have the emotional or mental bandwidth necessary to care for their own mental health. For social workers who remain in the field, high caseloads defuse their impact and deplete their energies, creating an environment ripe for turnover. Moreover, a social worker who carries a high number of cases at once cannot provide a client with the optimal level of care. For instance, a child welfare social worker would ideally talk to the child’s school, family, neighbors, local recreation center and so on. Each of these steps is necessary but time-consuming and, despite best efforts, impossible in some cases.

The chronic social worker shortage touches the lives of Coloradans throughout the state. Without ready access to help, crises – including drug addictions and overdoses– will continue to worsen. If we’re serious about seeing Colorado thrive, we must remain serious about rallying to support her unsung heroes.

AURORA COUNCIL BACKING QUERY INTO MOVING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES OUT OF CITY COURTS

Aurora lawmakers expressed support last week for asking city officials to draft a plan for shifting domestic prosecutions out of municipal court after balking at an earlier proposal to hand off prosecutions without a plan.

Developed by the city manager, city attorney, court administrator and presiding municipal judge, the plan would include a timeline for the transition as well as a breakdown of the “pros and cons” of such a move.

“I would want to see what the true fiscal impact would be for us,” said Aurora City Council member Dustin Zvonek, who sponsored the resolution that passed out of study session June 24.

“Assuming that there’s a plan that I believe is feasible, I would bring forward the ordinance (and) actually move it into place, assuming that there was enough support here.”

Also on Monday, the majority of the council did not oppose a separate resolution from Zvonek directing the Aurora City Attorney’s Office to explore suing the State of Colorado over a state bill that will limit cities’ ability to contract with private attorneys for public defender services.

Zvonek began pushing to outsource prosecutions after House Bill 24-1437 was introduced in the Legislature and signed into law earlier this year.

The bill was sponsored by Democratic Aurora Rep. Mike Weissman and only applies to the handful of Colorado cities, including Aurora, that prosecute domestic violence cases in their munic-

ipal courts rather than filing them in county and district courts.

Because Aurora maintains its own public defender office, the bill wouldn’t compel the city to make any changes to how its municipal court handles cases, unless it chooses to privatize the work of indigent defense.

Zvonek last year sponsored the request-for-proposal process that invited private law firms to bid on replacing the city public defender office — the council received no bids by the time the deadline came and went March 8.

A few weeks later, when a draft of Weissman’s bill was shared with the city, Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky said the council would “not back down” from pursuing privatization and would instead shift the responsibility of prosecuting domestic violence onto overlapping counties.

However, Zvonek has tried to distance his latest proposal from the debate over the future of the city office, describing it as a way of saving money by following the lead of the majority of Colorado cities and relying more on district courts.

“The Legislature is trying to hamstring local governments and our ability to control costs,” Zvonek told the council’s public safety policy committee last month. “Our city has a ton of priorities that our taxpayers expect us to address.”

Meanwhile, the counties that overlap Aurora have said they lack the capacity to handle the caseload that would be dropped in their laps as a result of the change.

Arapahoe County has said its share of the docket would include close to 1,600 cases per year, costing the county $2.45 million to handle

without significantly delaying justice for crime victims amidst a looming budget crisis.

Adams County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council also wrote in a June 10 letter to the Aurora City Council that the shift would overburden that county’s justice system, stretching thin its limited victim support services, creating a backlog of cases, threatening representation for poor defendants and potentially forcing the early release of prisoners from the county jail.

Victims, witnesses and police officers would also be compelled to travel to county courthouses in Brighton and Centennial rather than the courthouse in the Aurora Municipal Complex to attend hearings.

These concerns were echoed by council members when Zvonek brought an ordinance that would end prosecutions to the group’s June 10 study session. In response to a question from Councilmember Alison Coombs, Pete Schulte of the Aurora City Attorney’s Office told the group that leaving the prosecution of the city’s entire domestic violence caseload up to district courts would likely lead to some cases not being prosecuted “as vigorously.”

City staffers also said at the time that outstanding warrants and pending cases could mean the city continuing to move domestic violence cases through its court for at least a few years after police stopped filing charges there.

Zvonek agreed to amend his proposal to better facilitate a “transition phase” covering the time period during which cases would be moved out

of the city’s jurisdiction. On June 24, he brought a version that he described as “taking a step back” to plan alongside Aurora police, public defenders and local judicial districts, and address the concerns that had been raised.

“There was some opposition to the plan, period, but there were also just more questions around how you would make a move like this, of this size, happen,” he said.

After Coombs questioned why the item included language indicating the city would stop filing domestic violence cases in its court Jan. 1, Zvonek said he wanted to set a “benchmark” for when a plan should envision ending prosecutions by. He accepted an amendment to replace the language with language indicating that staff should investigate the feasibility of the Jan. 1 date.

The majority of the council did not object to the item moving forward to a regular meeting for a formal vote.

Also on Monday, Zvonek brought forward and his colleagues did not oppose a resolution directing the city attorney — currently Jack Bajorek, who the council unanimously voted to appoint to the role on an interim basis Monday — to explore bringing a lawsuit against the state in response to Weissman’s bill.

“Forget the public defender’s part of it — I think the bigger question is whether this violates local control and home rule,” Zvonek said. “We went through the whole process. Nobody came back and said that they wanted to participate in the RFP. And that’s fine, that’s settled. But I don’t think that we should ever find ourselves in a situation where the state is mandating this type of language on us, and we just take it, essentially.”

Schulte told the council that the City Attorney’s Office had already communicated with the City of Lakewood to gauge their interest in participating in a lawsuit as a fellow plaintiff and that Aurora would continue to reach out to other Colorado municipalities that prosecute domestic violence if the council wanted to explore a lawsuit.

Coombs said she viewed the bill as promoting equal pay for attorneys doing the work of public defense, as cities will still be allowed to pay private attorneys per-hour to do that work so long as they are paid at least the same rate as attorneys working for the state’s Office of Alternate Defense Counsel.

“It’s equal pay for equal work, which we are bound by, and I don’t think we should be saying we shouldn’t be bound by that,” she said.

Mayor Mike Coffman said he spoke with Weissman earlier in the year and that the Colorado House of Representatives member “acknowledged to me that he was already treading on home-rule authority.” Weissman told the Sentinel later that he believes House Bill 24-1437 is legally sound and that he did not indicate otherwise during his conversation with the mayor.

“Any time the General Assembly makes policy concerning the operations of home-rule municipal courts, we do acknowledge the constitutional basis of municipalities. We also acknowledge that the policy-making power of the General Assembly flows from our state Constitution, as well,” Weissman said. “I think that House Bill 24-1437, balances those realities, just as many, many bills also dealing with the question of municipal courts have over the last decade.”

Like Zvonek, the mayor presented Weissman’s bill as an infringement on the autonomy of home-rule cities.

“I think it’s important, however you feel about the issue, to preserve home rule (and) local control as a state constitutional issue,” Coffman said.

A majority of council members did not oppose the lawsuit proposal moving forward from Monday’s study session.

The council is tentatively scheduled to vote July 8 on directing staff to draft a plan for transitioning domestic violence prosecutions out of municipal court, and the plan itself would be presented to the council in August.

A formal vote on exploring legal action against the state is also slated for July 8.

Aurora celebrates opening of High Line Canal Trail bridge over I-70

Spanning Interstate 70 east of Tower Road in Aurora, the pedestrian and cyclist bridge that was the last missing piece of the High Line Canal Trail opened to the public officially June 26.

The 71-mile trail starts near Chatfield State Park in the south and ends near the Green Valley Ranch Golf Course in the north, weaving through Denver’s southern suburbs, southeast Denver and Aurora. Along the way, the trail intersects multiple major freeways, including Santa Fe Drive and interstates 25, 70 and 225.

In a news release, the City of Aurora described the 8-foot-wide multi-use path as completing the trail through metro Denver.

Arapahoe County reports Colorado’s first case of West Nile virus in 2024

Colorado’s first 2024 case of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus has been confirmed in Arapahoe County, according to a county news release.

Spread mostly through the bites of infected mosquitoes, the virus has the potential to cause a fever, headaches, body aches and rashes. In less than 1% of cases, patients may develop life-threatening neurological symptoms such as meningitis, swelling of the brain and paralysis.

“While we know that West Nile virus is endemic to Colorado — meaning we expect to see some cases each year — we never quite know how many to expect or just how bad a season will be,” Arapahoe County Public Health communicable disease epidemiology manager Melissa Adair said in the June 26 release.

officials cited the early appearance of the virus this year as a cause for concern.

Residents can reduce their risk of infection by staying indoors at dawn and dusk; keeping windows closed and using well-fitted windowscreens; avoiding spending time around lakes, ponds and other sources of standing water; eliminating sources of standing water around the home; wearing clothing that covers exposed skin and using insect repellents approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, such as sprays that include DEET.

Symptoms generally appear between two and 14 days after exposure, and people over the age of 60 are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms.

“The pedestrian bridge will enhance recreational opportunities and connectivity by completing nearly two miles of multi-use trail to close the gap between Colfax Avenue and East 32nd Parkway,” the release states.

The Denver Regional Council of Governments, Adams County Open Space and the Conservation Trust Fund partnered with the city and helped fund the $9 million project, which broke ground in January 2023, Aurora Parks, Recreation and Open Space spokesperson Griselda Romero said in an email.

“What this first case confirms for us, however, is that West Nile virus is present in our mosquito population, and as mosquito numbers increase, the risk of West Nile virus will, too.”

Arapahoe County provided few details about the case, and spokesperson Anders Nelson said in an email that the county could not disclose the infected person’s city of residence.

The news release notes that warmer nights and fewer storms could fuel an increase in mosquito activity. Colorado usually sees its first West Nile virus infection in the late summer months, and county

According to the news release, 2023 was Colorado’s worst year in terms of West Nile virus infections in 20 years, with 631 cases, 383 hospitalizations and 50 deaths reported across 40 counties, including 56 cases in Arapahoe County. Between 2018 and 2022, just 636 cases of the virus were reported statewide.

More time for joint ventures into Aurora pot shops

Good news for those looking for some added convenience picking up some bud, or those discovering past 10 at bedtime that they took their last edible— last night.

City lawmakers agreed unanimously this week to allow Aurora’s 24 licensed recreational cannabis shops to stay open until midnight daily.

Currently, Aurora pot shops have to close at 10 p.m.

The measure was sponsored by Councilmember Curtis Gardner.

“The state allows retail marijuana stores to stay open until (midnight) unless the local jurisdiction makes a more restrictive requirement,” city officials said in information leading the bill, passed unanimously June 24. “Multiple jurisdictions in the Denver Metro area allow for midnight closing times.”

Denver is one of those city’s with midnight closing times. No more late-night runs for the city’s border.

Aurora allows for only 24 licensed shops in the city, whereas Denver has no limit, but the city restricts what types of areas pot shops can set up, and how close together they can be.

Aurora is raising the woof — by one

Aurora lawmakers last week struck down one pet peeve for dog lovers insisting that there’s room for more than three.

City Council members agreed unanimously June 24 to raise the limit for dogs in homes from three to four.

The bill to make the change was sponsored by Councilmember Francoise Bergan.

She said was contacted by a constituent that lives in the Douglas County area of Aurora, where county regs allow to have four dogs. Aurora regs puts her out of compliance.

Besides, Bergan said she loves dogs, and the change makes it easier for dog foster and rescue families to keep from breaking the rules.

years ago when city animal control officials had to deal repeatedly with homes virtually overrun with dogs or cats.

In addition, widely publicized issues in the 1990s and early 2000s about problems with so-called “puppy mills” prompted an Aurora clamp-down on dogs and litters.

Veterinarians, organized rescues and other pet businesses, licensed by the state and city, are exempt from the limits.

Man, 34, faces 3 counts of attempted murder after southeast Aurora shooting

A 34-year-old Aurora man faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder after shooting three people at two locations June 27 in southeast Aurora, police said.

Police say Austin Benson, 34, was arrested that night and taken from a hospital to a local jail June 28.

Police were called to a home in the 4400 block of South Eagle Circle in the Pheasant Run neighborhood at about 9:30 p.m. after reports of a shooting.

“It was there that a 50-year-old woman was shot while inside of her vehicle,” police said in a social media post. “She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.”

Police said the suspect in the shooting then drove from where the woman was shot to the 4600 block of South Crystal Way, in the same neighborhood.

“It is there that he shot two people, a 64-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, both of whom were walking together in the area,” police said. “The suspect then drove off.”

Police searching the area came across a damaged car in the 14200 East block of Tufts Place.

“Officers then observed the suspect matching the description of the shooter inside an apartment,” police said. “Officers quickly evacuated four people from inside the unit and then placed the suspect… into custody without incident. He was taken to the hospital as a pre-

on the area and local streets were closed for hours and police investigated three locations. Police seized three firearms.

All three shooting victims were hospitalized, police said, two women and a man, all unidentified.

“One woman does have life-threatening injuries,” police said. “The other woman and man have serious injuries.”

Birth and death certificates are now available at two locations—Greenwood Village and Aurora. Our team can issue records for any births/deaths in Colorado (including replacements).

Right: Regis Jesuit senior right fielder Brody Chyr (22) contributed heavily with his glove and with his bat to help the Raiders finish as the Class 5A state runner-up. The Loyola Marymount pledge earned an outfield spot in the 2024 Aurora Sentinel All-Aurora Baseball Team as well.

Middle: Junior infielder Chase Chapman drove in a team-high 26 runs for Grandview, which made it to the second-to-last day of the season before losing to eventual state champion Cherry Creek.

Below: Regis Jesuit senior shortstop Andrew Bell, who signed with Duke University, made the All-Aurora first team after a season in which he led area hitters with six home runs.

The baseball season for Aurora prep teams stretched from the first pitch of opening day to the last pitch of the final game.

Regis Jesuit played twice with the Class 5A state championship on the line — and saw it slip away to rival Cherry Creek — while Grandview made it to the penultimate day and Cherokee Trail earned its way into the eight teams that battled it out in the Championship Series.

He was more effective (as he allowed two runs over five innings) but suffered the loss to finish the season 5-4 with two losses to Cherry Creek, plus one apiece to Championship Series qualifier Chaparral as well as Rock Canyon. Alpert struck out a teamhigh 52 in 46 innings and had a 2.43 ERA.

Diamond dudes

Those three area programs lend a significant amount of talent to the 2024 Aurora Sentinel All-Aurora Baseball Team, which is picked by the Sentinel in conjunction with balloting of city coaches.

Regis Jesuit earned a chance to play for its first state title since 2019 and did so with help from an excellent collection of pitching and position players.

On the mound, coach Matt Darr’s Raiders had multiple standouts who were led statistically by senior Liam Mosley, who won his first eight games and suffered his only defeat in the first of two state championship games on the final day of the season. Mosley — who signed with the University of Dallas — finished 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA. In a team-leading 47 innings, Mosley allowed just 12 earned runs, and five of them came in two innings of his championship game start against a hot-hitting Cherry Creek team. The All-Continental League first-teamer struck out 46 against just seven bases on balls.

Darr turned to sophomore Hudson Alpert in the team’s biggest games, and he held him back in case Regis Jesuit had to play Cherry Creek again.

In the field, Regis Jesuit was plenty loaded as well with a group that included senior shortstop Andrew Bell, a Duke University recruit who led Aurora players with six home runs (which tied him for third in 5A). Bell had 17 extra base hits among his 32 for the season, which produced a .390 batting average, and he led his team in runs scored (32) and stolen bases (19), while he tied for the lead in RBI with 25.

The highest batting average among All-Aurora first teamers came from senior Trevor Nordstrom, who fills the All-Aurora designated hitter role. While playing third base, Nordstrom — a Colorado School of Mines recruit — hit a sparkling .476 with a total of 40 hits that led local players, while he drove in 23 runs and scored 24.

Senior outfielder Brody Chyr was a dangerous left-handed bat in the middle of the Regis Jesuit lineup. The All-Continental League second team pick and signee with Division I Loyola Marymount knocked in 25 runs to tie Bell for the team lead. Chyr was an on-base machine — in addition to a .376 batting average, he drew 15 walks and was hit by a pitch five times against just 10 strikeouts.

Grandview’s run to the second-to-last day of the season — where it eventually lost to Centennial League rival Cherry Creek — came much on the strength of depth, but coach Scott Henry’s Wolves certainly had some top talents that were at the center of their success.

As usual, it was another strong season on the pitch for Aurora girls soccer teams, even though the postseason representation didn’t last beyond the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state playoffs.

The 2024 AuroraSentinelAll-Aurora Girls Soccer Team — chosen by the Sentinelin conjunction with balloting of area coaches — came from a deep pool that saw 19 players earn first-team accolades between the Centennial, City, Continental and Colorado Leagues (with three players of the year) plus 25 second-team picks and nine who earned themselves honorable mentions.

graduation of Naomi Clark as they scored seven fewer goals in one more game than they had the previous season, though they were still able to improve in the win-loss column.

Junior Isabelle Rogers, another team captain, earned All-Centennial League first team honors as a midfielder as one of the team’s most all-around contributors. She tied for Grandview’s team lead in goals with five (and had its only goal in a 3-1 loss to 5A state champion Mountain Vista) and she also shared the lead in assists with five, in games in which her team went 4-0.

earned its way into the 5A quarterfinals, where coach Brian Wood’s team saw a 10-win season end with a loss to Ralston Valley. The Wolves lost in the first round of the playoffs last season after they won the 2022 state title and got back to the quarterfinals with a very different group that in-

cluded a mix of experience with promising youth.

Grandview yielded the second-fewest goals among Aurora squads with 20 allowed (Gateway gave up just 18), and part of the season was the play of senior defender Sam Maroni, who was honored as Co-Centennial League Player of the Year and All-Cetennial League first team as well. Maroni — who was one of the team’s key players on set pieces — played four years on the varsity team and was chosen as a captain in her last two before she signed with Michigan State University.

Joining Marioni on the All-Aurora defense is sophomore teammate Isis Prestwood, who contributed on both ends. While she helped keep the ball out of danger with her speed, Prestwood also had a knack for putting the ball on net from long distances. She scored three goals, and two of them turned out to be game-winners, including the score that held up to deliver Grandview past Arvada West in the second round of the playoffs.

The Wolves’ offense was less effective after the

Cherokee Trail won half as many games as it did in 2023 (from 10 to five), but coach Jose Rosales’ team still managed to qualify for the 5A state playoffs because of how it came on in Centennial League play. The Cougars returned their leading scorer in senior Kiana Sparrow, who had eight goals a year ago and matched that total to again lead her squad. She scored two goals apiece in ties with rival Grandview and Rock Canyon — which went to the state championship game — and also had her team’s goal in a 3-1 first round loss to Ralston Valley. Sparrow — the Co-Centennial League Player of the Year and a repeat All-Centennial League first team selection — is headed to the University of Texas-San Antonio.Cherokee Trail also had a strong contributor on the backline in senior defender Andi Hiatt, an All-Centennial League first team and team captain.

Eaglecrest had a seven-game winning streak at one point during the season, and coach Ashley McKillips’ team keyed off versatile junior Annika Boex in a variety of ways.

Boex — who has committed to Division I Northern Arizona — was effective when deployed as a forward or as a midfielder. She tallied 10 goals and nine assists, both of which tied for the lead in the Centennial League, while her assists easily led all Aurora players. Boex (who had a five-goal game against Overland and a five-assist contest against Vista PEAK Prep) has made the All-Centennial League first team in consecutive seasons and has career total of 27 goals and 26 assists.

Regis Jesuit’s win total dipped significantly, but

ceived All-Centennial League first team honors for his versatility. On the mound, he was again one of the Wolves’ best performers with a record of 4-2 and a 4.36 ERA, while he struck out 50 in 45 innings. Pfister made Grandview’s infield defense its best when he was at first base, and he hit .366 with 30 hits (12 of them for extra bases) with 19 RBI and 23 runs.

The Wolves’ infield was also strengthened by junior Chase Chapman, who provided grit and situational awareness in addition to his statistical contributions.

The All-Centennial League second-teamer led Grandview with 26 RBI, while he had a .346 batting average and also stole 16 bases to finish one off his team’s lead.

On the mound, junior Justin Dean had an excellent season for Grandview, as he finished with a 6-2 record — which tied him for the second-most wins among any Aurora pitcher — to go with a sparkling 2.61 ERA. The right-hander pitched a team-high 53 2/3 innings and struck out 55 against just 16 walks in that span. Dean gave up just three earned runs in 11 2/3 postseason innings between regionals and the state tournament.

Cherokee Trail brought back several key cogs from last season’s 5A runner-up team and those known quantities again performed well for coach Jon DiGiorgio’s team as it returned to the Championship Series.

Pitching was the Cougars’ definite strength with a rotation headed by University of Houston-bound left-hander Logan Reid. Chosen as the Centennial League’s Pitcher of the Year, Reid finished with a 6-2 record with a 2.25 ERA and a whopping 64 strikeouts (vs. 14 walks) in 53 innings. He pitched 13 1/3 of a possible 14 innings in two postseason starts (regional and Championship Series) and gave up three unearned runs with 19 strikeouts. Reid’s ability as a well-rounded baseball player showed as he played in the field when not on the mound and had a .310 batting average, knocking in 16 runs.

Cherokee Trail also had strength in the infield in senior shortstop Braedan Reichert, an All-Centennial League first-team performer who had a sparkling .381 batting average, while 13 of his 32 hits went for extra bases. He knocked in 23 runs, scored 26 and most impressively struck out just seven times while he drew 14 bases on balls.

In right field for the Cougars lurked senior Akoi Burton, who built on a strong junior campaign with an even better senior season that landed him on the All-Centennial League first team. Burton had the highest batting average of any area regular in the outfield at .412, which led his team, as did his 35 hits and 28 RBI. The Garden City Community College recruit also used his speed tracking down balls and threw out two runners from the outfield, including one in a Championship Series win.

Eaglecrest’s season finished with a flourish, as coach Tory Humphrey’s team went 5-2 in the final two weeks of the regular season, qualified for the 5A postseason and promptly knocked out No. 1-seeded Fossil Ridge in regionals before Grandview kept the Raptors out of the Championship Series. The Raptors had one of the top

talents in the area in junior infielder Noah Brown, who managed to earn All-Centennial League honors while also trying his hand at track & field for the first time (and winning a state championship with a relay team in the process). Brown’s .439 average led his team and tied him for second among Centennial League players, while he led the

area with 19 stolen bases, scored 26 runs and drove in 20. Senior John Rossi earned All-Centennial League first team honors in the outfield for a second straight season. With a smooth left-handed swing, Rossi had a .339 batting average. The University of Texas-Permian Basin commitment finished the season

strong as he was 7-for-15 in the Raptors’ final five games, which included a game with two home runs against Cherry Creek in a Centennial League Challenge semifinal along with two hits apiece in a key late-season walkoff win over Rocky Mountain as well as two hits and two runs scored in the Raptors’ regional upset of Fossil Ridge. He scored 21 runs and drove in 13 runs.

Behind the plate, senior Brayden Stufft earned All-Centennial League second team honors for a season that included a .328 batting average and 21 RBI. The Raptors were 9-2 in games in which Stufft had at least one run driven in and he added 10 stolen bases to boot.

Vista PEAK Prep earned a program-record 16 wins on the season and the multiple contributions of sophomore Abel Salinas had a lot to do with it. The righthander finished the season as the area’s only undefeated starting pitcher with a 7-0 record. Salinas tied for the most innings thrown for the Bison with 40 2/3, over which he struck out 60 with an ERA of just 2.17, while as a regular when not pitching, he hit .327 with 20 RBI, which was just one off the team lead for the Bison.

part of that was due to a strength of schedule — coach Will Cropper’s Raiders faced both 5A finalists and five of the eight quarterfinalists among the typically tough Continental League schedule, plus the early departure of Division I talent Lexi Meyer — but still had one of the top individual talents in senior midfielder Adeleine Walick. The University of Michigan recruit, an accomplished club player as well, garnered Continental League Player of the Year honors after a season in which she statistically notched four assists, but controlled play when she was on the field despite constant defensive attention.

Gateway earned the distinction of the Aurora program with the most victories as coach Karen Macleish’s team piled up 12 of them, against just three defeats at one tie. The Olys — who qualified for the postseason for the first time in more than two decades, if not longer — had some young talent that filled in around some experienced seniors.

One of those was midfielder Maria Herrera, a team captain who finished with her second straight season in double digits with goals. Herrera notched 12 of them, which were spread out among eight different games, while she added seven assists. The All-Colorado League first team performer had a goal or an assist in nine games.

Rangeview had Aurora’s leader in goals and points in junior forward Hazel Bonansinga, who accounted for half of the offense for coach Vic Strouse’s team. In her third varsity season, Bonansinga — an All-City League first team pick — was one of only three area players to score in double digits in goals as she piled up 14 of them. The Raiders were 4-0-1 in games that Bonansinga scored at least once and three of her goals stood up as game-winners, while she also contributed a handful of assists for 33 points.

Vista PEAK Prep gave up 58 goals — the second-most of any city program — but that number would have been significantly higher without the stellar play of senior Kaylynn Stewart in the goal. Stewart earned All-City League first team honors for good reason as she notched a stunning 302 saves to lead Colorado in all classifications. It was more saves than the next two Aurora goalkeepers combined.

BOYS SWIMMING

Grandview’s Schimberg leads Aurora’s NISCA

All-American contingent

The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) issued its list of boys prep swimmming All-Americans for the 202324 season and locals from Cherokee Trail, Grandview, Regis Jesuit and Smoky Hill made the prestigious cut. The organization annually recognizes the top 100 athletes or relay teams from across the country who achieve the required standard in each event, and Colorado showed well on that list.

Leading the way among Aurora’s honorees was Grandview’s Oliver Schimberg, who put the finishing touches on a stellar junior season with five All-American honors.

Schimberg — who recently announced his commitment to the University of Minnesota — won the area’s only Class 5A state championship when he took the 100 yard backstroke. His altitude-adjusted best time of 47.38 seconds ranked ninth in the country. Schimberg also achieved All-America status in the 100 yard butterfly (in which he tied for 45th nationally) and the 200 yard individual medley (in which he was 54th), while he was also part of two All-American relays. He was joined by Alex Stinemetze, Ethan Finlay and Evan Higgins on a 200 yard medley relay that ranked No. 43 nationallly, while Higgins plus Evan Linnebur and Christian Burgeson landed 95th in the 400 freestyle relay.

country in the 100 yard breaststroke (in which he was the 5A runner-up) of 54.49 seconds, while he tied for 100th in the 200 yard individual medley. Noffsinger was the 5A state runner-up in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:30.09 that tied him for 79th nationallly. Magner earned the honor in the 200 yard individual medley as he tied for 60th nationally.

All-American Swim nods

Burnham won a second consecutive (and third in four seasons) Class 5A state championship in the 100 yard breaststroke and her altitude-adjusted best time of 1 minute, 1.77 seconds, was good enough to put her 28th in the country, while her 23.04 in the 50 freestyle ended up 41st. The Raiders’ relay team swam 1:42.81 to earned the No. 28 spot on the national list.

Three other Aurora area individuals earned All-American status in Smoky Hill senior Daniel Yi and junior Ian Noffsinger as well as Regis Jesuit junior Reid Magner. Yi — a University of Utah recruit — had the 25th-fastest time in the

Regis Jesuit, the 5A state team runner-up, had two All-American relay teams in the 200 yard medley team of seniors Owen Mulligan and Hennig Colsman, junior Hugh Boris and sophomore Nolan Kohl — who ranked 56th nationally — plus the 400 freestyle relay team of Colsman, Magner, Kohl and senior Sean Greene-Cockriel, who were the 67th-fastest outfit. Rounding out Aurora’s boys All-American contingent was the Cherokee Trail 400 yard freestyle relay team of senior Hugh Mullen, juniors Jacob Mueller and Bronson Smothers, and sophomore Tyson

One individual and three relay teams from Regis Jesuit and Grandview earned All-American honors from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) for the 2023-24 girls swimming season.

Senior Charlotte Burnham — a University of California, Berkeley, recruit — captured the honor (which goes to the top 100 performers across the country who achieve the required standard) in two individual events and along with fellow senior Tierney Kohl as well as freshmen Natalie Daum and Ava Terella on the 200 yard medley relay for coach Nick Frasersmith’s Raiders.

Burnham was a four-time NISCA All-American in 2023, while it is the first such honor for Kohl, Daum and Terella.

The area’s last NISCA All-American honor went to the Grandview 200 yard freestyle relay team of seniors Keira Vail and Amelia Brown along with sophomore Makenna Dyk and freshman Jasia Barnes. The group swam a best time of 1:34.93 that ranked 35th in the nation for coach James Boone’s team. Brown was an individual All-American in the 50 yard freestyle in 2023.

EMERGING MARKET

Aurora’s ‘Rebel Marketplace’ fosters community and grown

At a unique farmer’s market in a northwest Aurora park, Ron Johnson sits under an umbrella next to an ice box tied to his bike. He’s selling sorrel-flavored ice cream and Popsicles made from strawberries he grows inside his house.

When he started his business as a Rebel Marketplace vendor in Aurora’s Del Mar Park, he named it “Griot.” That’s the Portuguese word for a West-African bard or storyteller. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he joined the “rebels,” wanting to “bring back more hospitality and healthiness to eating.”

Johnson is one of dozens of vendors in the diverse collective who’ve created an unusual weekly market, often boasting homemade products and produce grown in backyards.

“The standard American diet has taken most of us away from our healthier delicious culinary roots,” the Aurora Public Schools nutritionist said. He’s a trained chef, too. “The American diet differs dramatically in quality from traditional and multicultural ways of eating including the traditions of the African diaspora.”

Farmer’s markets tend to boast the same spread of products: fresh produce and homemade confections. But the Rebel Marketplace represents something much more. This is much less a traditional farmers market, but a collective of local vendors looking out for their community. This is backyard to the tables of many looking out for one another.

FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

The Rebel Marketplace is the brainchild of James Grievous. Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. he welcomes patrons visiting the market or hovers around his own vendor tent, “Rebels In The Garden.”

Recently, he was offering early carrots and radishes. The tent was created to follow an urban farming principle, which is the concept of creating gardens to grow fresh produce in urban settings like neighborhood backyards.

He started the project in 2015 with three of his kids and two of their friends.

“As they got older, in their early teens, we wanted to transition and teach them business skills and things like that to sell the produce from the work they’re doing,” Grevious said. “And so we went on Nextdoor and said, ‘Hey, we’re thinking about this idea with a farmer’s market here at Del Mar Park,’ and it kind of took off.”

The Rebel Marketplace began with only a handful of gardeners. Now it’s expanded to 28 vendors on a slow week. Each Saturday, there are food trucks, pottery vendors and even succulent stands, all originating from the Aurora area.

MARKET grown at home

RESOURCE FOR WOULD-BE URBAN FARMERS

Grievous’s passion for the project has evolved into a nonprofit group called Urban Symbiosis — a program that utilizes a four-year process to help individuals looking to get into urban farming, which could eventually transfer into joining the Rebel Marketplace to sell crops.

The program donates $500 per year toward urban farmers looking to start their own business to cover seedlings, tools and raised beds. If they want to continue urban farming, the program will continue providing the same amount up to an additional three years for the continuous production of local crops to ensure they are market ready.

With the recent closure of a Walmart on East Colfax Avenue and Havana Street — which Grevious said impacted Aurora residents’ accessibility to fresh produce — his marketplace aims to step in.

Although Grevious and his family have a prominent presence in the marketplace, many vendors build upon the community-centric atmosphere the Rebel Marketplace provides.

FARMING FROM HOME

Johnson has been participating in the Rebel Marketplace for a few years. Every weekend, he rides his bike to and from his rented kitchen space, near his home, to deliver his frozen treats.

During the week, Johnson uses his own hydroponic system in his home to grow a variety of produce like strawberries and mushrooms, the former being used for his sweet treats, as a part of his “full-circle food service business.” On Saturdays, he spends his day selling his desserts from an ice box attached to his bike.

Johnson, an African American, has taken classes that focus on “health and well-being that offers alternatives based on ancestry and science.” Through those, he’s learned the benefits of using different ingredients for better consumption amongst marginalized communities.

His business does not include dairy products because, as he describes, “ancestors of most minority communities were not cattle farmers and therefore do not have the genetics to properly digest and break down lactose.”

GROWING HEIRLOOM CROPS AT HOME

A produce vendor and farmer, Kezia Lozano, started Alegría Gardens three years ago as a means to heal family trauma. Lozano’s father was a migrant farm worker from Tamaulipas, Mexico where Lozano says he was exploited as “cheap labor for wealthy landowners.”

Despite persistence from her parents to avoid farming, she felt a calling as a child to grow produce.

“I finally put my hands in the dirt to grow my own food in 2020, realized the depth of the calling and decided that since

I have the privilege of gentleness in land access, I am going to put my efforts into healing that generational trauma and feed my community at the same time,” Lozano said.

Growing heirloom crops and ensuring biodiversity in the food system is a passion of Lozano’s. Some of the various crops she grows are corn, beans, amaranth and squash. According to Lozano, virtually all of her crops are indigenous.

“(Rarámuri crops are) often overlooked and unavailable in conventional markets but were banned from cultivation by the Spanish in Mexico for hundreds of years due to its nutritional and spiritual value,” Lozano said. “It was kept alive in secret by indigenous farmers and I want to honor that ancestral tradition by making it available to the Mexican-American community here.”

STARTING OUT YOUNG

Fifteen-year-old Justine Pipping, vendor and founder of Marshmallow Express, stands in the shade at her booth with homemade marshmallows with flavors like watermelon, matcha and birthday cake.

Pipping began her business in high school, where she makes homemade marshmallows for her classmates and friends. She learned about a program that her school provides that includes a trip to Barcelona, inspiring her to create her own small business to help her fund the trip for herself. Now, she sells marshmallows for the Aurora community.

With the help of Rebel Marketplace and other events around the Aurora area, she hopes to expand her business into something more with the help and support of her own family.

“My mom has been really encouraging. And she says that we should push to get a cafe at some point,” Pipping said. “We’re mostly thinking about how it’ll look and we also want a safe space for kids my age to go to relax.”

AT A CROSSROADS

The Rebel Marketplace is at a “crossroads” at this point, according to Grevious, in regard to foot traffic and sales. They are gathering data and information to measure presence within their marketplace.

The Rebel Marketplace is beginning its fifth year, and this year is the first time the marketplace will run every Saturday this summer. The project has experienced some issues with the city permitting, as well as a change in foot traffic lately. Grievous looks to sustain the marketplace’s vendors and is wanting the marketplace to stay present in the Aurora community.

“So it’s an economic question, it’s a philosophical question and it’s a needs question,” Grievous said. “So figuring out ways that Rebel Marketplace can fill that gap for whatever it is to help those folks who need fresh food and things like that.”

Potential changes await the Rebel Marketplace. On July 6, they will be setting up

numerous homemade foods and fares.

AURORA IS THE CENTER OF CULTURES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. NO MATTER WHERE YOU OR YOUR FAMILY HAILS FROM, THE INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY CAN BRING NEW TASTES AND OLD FAVORITES.HERE ARE THREE EASY RECIPES FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE DRESS-UP YOUR FAMILY FEST OVER THE LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

A simple recipe for onigiri, or Japanese rice balls, with salted plums

Onigiri is a ball of rice with something inside, similar to how two slices of bread with something in between makes a sandwich. In the same way that just about every American has made and eaten a sandwich, so too have most Japanese eaten onigiri.

A Tokyo correspondent for The Associated Press is sharing her basic onigiri recipe. It uses umeboshi (salted Japanese plums), but what you put inside can be just about anything — fish, meat, veggies, even cheese — as long as it fits and tastes good. Feel free to experiment.

Shape your onigiri into the standard triangular form, or whatever fun image strikes your fancy. Wrap it with nori (dried seaweed). You can use one big strip of nori or several bite-size pieces.

There are no fixed rules. Some people sprinkle their onigiri with sesame seeds. Oboro kombu, or shaved kelp, is another favorite. Or enjoy it plain.

Easy Onigiri, from AP’s Yuri Kageyama

Start to finish: 5-7 minutes

Servings: 5 rice balls (enough for five people, or just one big eater)

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup water

1 ½ cup Japanese rice, cooked to fluffiness

Three umeboshi salted Japanese plums (available at Asian food stores; for smaller umeboshi, use one for each rice ball)

Two sheets of dried nori seaweed Directions:

• Add the salt to the bowl of water. Wet your hands with the salted water, pick up a handful of cooked rice, still hot but cooled

enough so your fingers don’t burn. Put umeboshi on top. Pick up another scoop of rice with your other hand, place it on top of the rice and umeboshi. Cup your hands together, squishing gently. Turn a few times in your hands so the rice becomes a slightly triangular ball. Wrap with nori.

• Add any desired garnishes, such as sesame seeds or kombu.

From Nigeria, leftover rice gets a new life in this curried skillet meal

Freshly cooked rice is delightfully tender and fragrant, but not the best choice for fried rice due to its soft, moist texture. In this Nigerian-inspired curried mealin-a-skillet, we use plain, chilled cooked rice so the grains “fry” up

light and fluffy.

The recipe, from our newest cookbook “ Milk Street 365: The All-Purpose Cookbook for Every Day of the Year,” seasons the rice with curry powder, dried thyme and a handful of aromatics. Beef liver and an assortment of vegetables are classic ingredients, but we opted for chicken thighs and green beans.

We start by seasoning the chicken thighs with salt, pepper and curry powder, then sauté them in hot oil until evenly browned. The chicken then is pushed to the side, and an aromatic mixture of scallion whites and fresh ginger is added, along with green beans, jalapeño chilies, thyme and more curry powder.

Once the green beans are bright green, the cooked, chilled rice is added and the pan is deglazed with chicken broth. Don’t be afraid to really scrape up the browned bits from the surface of the skillet after you’ve added the

broth. The caramelization gives the rice great depth. Fragrant basmati is especially good, but any type of long-grain white rice works.

Start to finish: 40 minutes

Servings: 4

INGREDIENTS

3 tablespoons neutral oil or refined coconut oil, divided

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

2 teaspoons curry powder, divided

Kosher salt and ground black pepper

4 scallions, thinly sliced, whites and greens reserved separately

2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger

4 ounces green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

1 teaspoon dried thyme

The city on its website advises

1 Fresno or jalapeño chili, stemmed, seeded and thinly sliced 4 cups cooked and chilled long-grain white rice, preferably basmati

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

DIRECTIONS

In a 12-inch skillet over medium-high, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil until barely smoking. Add the chicken and sprinkle with ½ teaspoon of the curry powder, ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until evenly browned, 4 to 6 minutes.

Push the chicken to the perimeter of the pan. To the center, add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, scallion whites and ginger; cook, stirring, until lightly browned, about 1½ minutes. Into the scallion mixture, stir the beans, thyme, half of the chili, the remaining 1½ teaspoons curry powder and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Stir the chicken

Corbitt, who was later to head up the culinary world at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. The tongue-incheek name Texas Caviar stuck, obviously a nod to the amusing disconnect of a bean salad being compared to fancy, pricey fish roe. Since then, it’s become more commonly known as Cowboy Caviar and very popular throughout the Southwest and all of the country.

This bean, corn and vegetable salad is made with a simple vinaigrette-type dressing usually spiked with lime juice and some sort of hot chili pepper. It’s got those great Southwestern/TexMex flavors, so it goes well with any kind of meal in that arena, not to mention pretty much any grilling or barbecue menu. You can enjoy it as a salad, as a salsa, or — as its most popularly served — as a dip for crunchy tortilla chips. Sylvia Casares (aka The Enchilada Queen), chef and owner of Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen in Houston, grew up on the border of Texas and Mexico and says of the salad “it’s been around forever.”

1 cup diced red or yellow onions

1 large tomato, seeded and diced

3 bell peppers, cored, seeded and diced (use red, yellow, orange, or a combination)

3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

2 Haas avocados (diced)

Directions Make the dressing: In a small container, combine the lemon or lime juice, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper and jalapeno. Make the salad: In a large bowl, combine the beans, corn, onions, tomatoes bell peppers, jalapenos and cilantro. Shake up the dressing, pour it over the salad and toss to combine.

If you want to serve it right away, gently mix in the avocado. If you have time, this salad is better if you make it a day ahead, refrigerate it, toss it a few times over the marinating time, and then just add the avocado right before serving.
