At long last, I’ve discovered the problem with family summer road trips. It’s the family.
For decades, I’ve tried my damnedest to figure out a way to either have a good time strapped into the back seat of a car among those who swim in your gene pool, or behind the wheel of a car, griping about my gene-pool mates strapped into the seats behind and next to me.
I know it’s a family thing because I’ve been on road trips with friends before, and Social Services never once had to get involved.
Long ago, when everything I did made perfect sense, a college pal, Mike, and I decided just after the bars closed that it would be a grand idea to take off for Tucson, Arizona — right then.
We would go for as many days as we could beg our bosses to let us play hooky, and/or until the money ran out. It was an early Monday morning. We were thinking our cash and boss-butt kissing would have us back by Thursday night.
So we loaded up our coffee can of spare change, any food we had that didn’t have to be heated, and clean underwear. It’s not like we were animals.
And we drove south.
By the time we hit Colorado Springs, we’d eaten all the Doritos and Cap’n Crunch. We also realized that the only cassette tape we had was Neil Young’s Greatest Hits. By the time we hit Santa Fe, New Mexico, we didn’t like each other any more.
Actually, the Loaf ‘n Jug coffee, the stale don-etts and the sixth time I’d suffered through Mike’s nasal falsetto sing-along with Neil’s “Old Man,” made me a little cross.
When I ripped the cassette out of the player in mid “IIIIIIIII’m a loooooot like youuuuuuuuuu...” and tossed it out the window, Mike took it the wrong way.
It was a quiet ride for several hours.
By the time we hit the outskirts of Tucson, we were practically hallucinating from an overdose of Lucky Charms, Sudafed and sleep deprivation.
Neither of us had ever seen a real desert before, the kind with cartoon cacti and sand. It was exhilarating to run from cactus to cactus under a hot, afternoon sun. It was especially exhilarating when we realized the odd forgotten ropes on the comically flat rocks were actually snakes.
It was a fast ride into town.
There, we drank cheap vodka and Tang. We ate PBJ sandwiches and slept in the back of the pick-up at a truck stop. I paid premium rolls of pennies and nickels to buy the same Neil Young tape I’d tossed out the pick-up window. We splurged on a gross motel room one night, and we’re talking early-days Tucson gross, and laughed it off when we came back from the bars to discover that someone had puked in our toilet while we were gone.
So Thursday morning, depleted of sleep, cash and cold cereal, we headed home. We took turns alternating two-hour shifts of sleeping in the bed of the truck as the other drove, singing, “Hey, Hey, My, My,” until one of us banged on the back window for mercy.
We remained friends. I’ve never been back
to Tucson.
I only bore you with some of the details to illustrate that a road trip under what most would consider less-than-ideal circumstances netted some of the best times ever, even though it’s probably pretty clear by now that my goodtimes bar is seriously low.
As a kid I started each road trip wandering optimistically around the cavernous back seat of my parents’ 1965 Chrysler Newport. But not long after we’d set off for Creede or down home to Rocky Ford, the moment would be ruined by my little brother, Tracy.
Before we could even get on the interstate, Tracy was talking to me, touching me or breathing on me. Of course it was my duty as the older sibling to report those infractions immediately and relentlessly.
As retribution, I became expert at positioning my brother in the back seat and infuriating my parents by saying something like, “Ouch. I don’t care, I’m telling. Dad is gonna kill you when sees what you’re doing.” And, voila, the inevitable flailing arm and smacking hand from over the massive bench seat of the speeding Chrysler would deliver a well-strategized smack to my brother.
In contrast, in all the road trips I took with my friends, I never reached around to hit them. Well, once, on the way to Crested Butte, careening down Monarch Pass during a blizzard in my intrepid 1986 Dodge Omni 024 (It wasn’t that bad) I did have to reach around to push against my 6-foot-4-inch-tall friend’s head. Doug was screaming in my ear to pull over, convinced we were going to die.
We later learned that Doug was from Illinois and had never been in the back of a car on top of a Rocky Mountain pass during a blizzard, sliding precariously toward the guardrail-less side of the road, which was so snowpacked we couldn’t see anyway.
His reaction is pretty typical of people not from here, I’ve learned.
As an adult with my own family, I was prepared to break the cycle of road-trip torment. Each expedition starts out pretty well, but we’re in the car for only minutes before it begins to devolve, usually around problems with food.
Now being a notorious pig, most people assume I would be to blame for eating into a perfectly good vacation. In fact, it is my wife, Melody, who has weighed no more than 105 pounds since high school, and still wears clothes from
then, who is to blame.
My daughter, Isabella, is equally slight and endlessly ravenous. Every road trip, whether it’s just up to Loveland Basin for a couple of hours for some turns, across most of Canada, or speeding through the wasteland of Kansas en route to KC barbecue — an odd addiction we all share — every road trip starts out with cartons of snacks and goodies.
Before we hit the interstate, most of the Oreos, M&Ms, Hot Tamales mixed with salty cashews and sliced apples are gone.
“Where are we going to eat?” Melody asks for the first of what will be 4,239 times before we return home. That is Isabella’s cue to fire up her iPhone, digitally tethered to the car stereo, and fill the car with her favorite classics of the ‘80s.
Melody hates the classics of the ‘80s. She especially hates classics sung by Tears for Fears, which produces tears from Isabella, which cues Melody to ask, “Did you decide where we’re going to eat, or are we just going to starve for six days?”
Which cues me to reach into the back seat and flail my hand in search of the offending iPhone and deliver a satisfying smack to anything I encounter.
We recently spent a few days in Green Bay, it’s a place in a state called “Wisconsin.” They have a popular football team, and it’s a big deal, people there told me. I’ll have more on that in a few weeks.
Needless to say, there was a lot of cheese curdling, butter burgering and Door County cherry pie-ing — I can’t recommend that highly enough — every few miles.
“Are we ever going to eat dinner?” Melody kept asking, finishing another bucket of fried cheese curds to go. “I need more than cheese curds, you know.”
I know.
So I get it now. It’s a gene pool thing. Faced with hilarious threats of death, a steady diet of PBJs or poisonous snakes, the worst road trip ever is a really good time. But with family, a trek across Europe or a drive to Golden Gate Canyon, not far from Aurora, is the shortest way to Hell.
The solution? We’re trying Funyuns sandwiches filled with sardines and Duran Duran. Dave Perry is editor of the Aurora Sentinel and Aurora magazine. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook at @ EditorDavePerry.
Cryptic election rhetoric has long been the bipartisan norm for generations.
What’s coming from the Republican team running for Colorado governor is not anything like that.
Two weeks ago, Ganahl’s campaign jumped the tracks when it announced the Centennial Camp Bow Wow creator turned CU regent would tab a southeast Colorado Hispanic man as her choice for lieutenant governor, only to take it back almost the same day, and blame the media.
The following week, the Ganahl campaign jumped the shark and switched to Aurora businessman and veteran Danny Moore as a running mate.
Minutes after the announcement, it was a media dog pile to point out it was the same Danny Moore booted as chairperson of the state’s 2021 redistricting committee because he’d made repeated social media posts indicating he was an unequivocal Trump election denier.
Despite nearly every media outlet in the state pointing it out, both Ganahl and Moore refused to talk with reporters to address it.
Instead, a few days later, they appeared at an Aurora bar to introduce Moore to the public, never mentioning the denier-conundrum. They then refused to take questions from reporters, saying they were too busy.
Days later, Moore penned an essay for the ColoradoSpringsGazette, accusing the
media of “liberal bias” in focusing on the flap, which he dismisses as a non-story.
The local media “continuously ask questions meant to divide and distract us, like gratuitous questions about whether the last election was stolen.”
“Stolen” was almost the word Moore used in a Facebook post last year.
On Jan. 29, 2021, Moore said about Biden, “This is the guy elected by the Democrat steal,” according to 9News.
Words matter, especially when you repeat them, even if you erase and later deny them or try to explain them away from the public’s attention.
Rather than step forward and take the messages back as a moment of instability or astounding folly, Moore goes on in his essay to say maybe he doesn’t think the election was stolen, but maybe he does.
Moore said Facebook helped liberals during the election, even though he ignores a tsunami of lies and disinformation Trump allies pumped through hundreds of millions of Facebook feeds.
“And the judicial system allowing Democratic operatives to make massive last-minute changes to voting laws in various key states that were not prepared to handle mail-in balloting,” Moore writes.
Only election deniers peddle this debunked disinformation.
Moore says he’s not really an election denier, but then he trots out one of the most often shared and repeatedly debunked elec-
tion denier tropes on Facebook. It’s a lie regularly performed during the traveling Trump shows and still repeatedly retold among those still supporting the Trump-Giuliani exploits.
And, Moore says in his Gazettecolumn, he will continue to refuse to answer media questions about his worrisome election-denier problem.
Partisan operatives defend Moore’s vacuous obstinance and go on to say, no one cares about a lieutenant governor anyway because they just while away four years in obscurity.
Ganahl may or may not have some compelling policy points and differences with the current Polis administration that the public would benefit from exploring. But with a campaign that can’t get past its shadowy alliance and worrisome allegiance to dark, criminal forces from Trumpers, leading the once-solid Republican Party off the edge of insanity, these two only self-cancel their legitimacy.
Ganahl and Moore behave like amateur liars who underestimate Colorado voters’ ability to get that.
Being an election denier isn’t like embracing some kind of quirky party philosophy.
As elected or appointed government officials, they are fatal to American democracy and the rule of law. These deniers are as toxic to the most fundamental parts of American government as fascists were to democ-
racies that were destroyed in Europe.
Despite what Moore insists, there were no legitimate questions about the credibility of the 2020 election held here in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia or any other state that Trump’s sordid nightmare earnestly tried to run coups.
That verifiable fact is acknowledged and regularly repeated by courts and officials Trump himself appointed and once trusted until they refused to lie for him.
The problem is not a partisan press, soft on liberals. TheSentinel, among many others, have taken great exception to positions, statements and ambiguities from Gov. Jared Polis and his administration since elected. Most recently, Polis and fellow Colorado Democrats were clobbered with media criticism for hyping state tax refunds made possible by a state anti-tax system they have for decades been harshly critical of.
The questions of Ganahl and Moore being election deniers, or slyly winking at them, is not a “gratuitous” query that all but complicit Colorado media are obsessed with.
It’s a deal breaker, just as the tenants of European fascism were in the 1930s, which voters there tragically ignored.
Until Ganahl and Moore quit ignoring or sidestepping this fatal flaw, voters would be wise to ignore them as credible candidates for this or any office.
Editor:
As a resident of that sliver of Aurora that falls in Douglas County, I was truly saddened and mortified when I learned that the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is dumping homeless prisoners in Aurora when their released from the county jail.
Aurora’s city government is one of the poorest in the state (we don’t have a Park Meadows). But even if Douglas County ponied up a big wad of cash, our non-profits simply do not have the capacity for more homeless – a fact that the Sheriff’s plan wrongfully assumes. We’re already in crisis and the Sheriff knows this.
Further, the law-abiding people of Aurora are at their limit with panhandlers, the homeless and the accompanying spike in property crime. Now Sheriff Spurlock has dumped gasoline on the fire — albeit somewhat out of necessity.
The problem: Both the residents and leadership of Douglas County haven’t come to grips with the fact homelessness is exploding and can’t be simply willed away or dumped elsewhere. None of us can rightfully claim NIMBY. Sorry but Douglas County isn’t immune and the problem continues to grow.
As a resident and homeowner, I’m calling on the Douglas County Commissioners to step up and own this—and just not with outreach and hand-wringing. You and the county’s non-profits need to build and staff shelters—just like every other moderately populated county.
Mayor Coffman has suggested involving the legislature which I would fully support, but the delay is concerning. Should Douglas County not immediately reverse course and deal with its own problem, I would propose full and immediate retribution at a ratio of 3:1. The city of Aurora, together with Adams and Arapahoe counties should use any available funds to immediately start booking motel rooms in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Parker for our soon-to-be-released inmates. Give them rooms for 60 days so they can get a fresh start in Douglas County.
Sorry but Aurora’s not rolling over. For each released homeless convict Douglas County transports to Aurora, three should be expected in return.

achel Baumgartner, a 6th grade social studies teacher at Prairie Middle School, will have a unique answer for anyone who asks what she did over the summer.
This June, Baumgartner participated in a weeklong workshop for educators at Heart Mountain in Wyoming, the site of an internment camp for Japanese Americans during WWII.
Set in a remote location in Park County, Wyoming between the towns of Cody and Powell, only a few barracks remain at Heart Mountain these days. But during the war it was home to almost 14,000 people who were forcibly displaced from their homes throughout the western U.S., making it at one point the third largest town in the state.
“It is really beautiful, but it’s home to this part of history that’s not so beautiful,” Baumgartner said of Heart Mountain.
The program was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Baumgartner heard about it through the district and received a stipend to attend. She was interested in the workshop because of the opportunity to incorporate more place-based knowledge into lesson plans for her students but she also has a personal connection to that period of history — her own grandparents were placed in internment camps.
Many Japanese Americans spoke little about their experiences in internment camps after the war, particularly those who were interned as children and understood less about what was happening at the time, she said, including her own family.
R“My grandparents talked about it a little bit but it didn’t spark in them any type of activism,” Baumgartner said. “It was just part of history and they were ready to move on.”
The program helped her to connect with them and gain a deeper understanding of what they lived through.
“There is a lot that I didn’t know about my own family’s experience and it gave me a way to talk to them about it, and that was really impactful for me,” she said.
With the generation that lived through the events of WWII becoming older and older, she said that programs like this that help preserve their memories and work to ensure that similar atrocities don’t take place in the future are more important than ever. Since the program began a few years ago, several of the speakers who came to share their personal stories have already passed away.
“Time is not really on our side for preserving some of their stories, but whatever we have right now we should be taking advantage of and make sure we’re learning as much as we can,” Baumgartner said.
The workshop was a part of the Mineta-Simpson Institute at Heart Mountain, a project run by former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, a Republican, and former Democratic Congressman and White House secretary Norm Mineta, who died this May.
The two lawmakers met as boys when Mineta and his family were interned at Heart Mountain. Simpson was living nearby in Cody and his Boy Scout troop visited the camp. Though in different political parties during their careers, the two re-
mained friends and worked together to pass the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which provided redress to those who were interned.
The Institute will have a retreat space at Heart Mountain that will hold workshops and programs designed to foster that spirit in the next generation of leaders.
“Over the past several years, fear and anger have become the dominant forces in American politics,” the Institute’s website said. “For our elders, who were unjustly imprisoned during World War II because of their race, this political climate feels all too familiar. To satisfy our mission, we realize the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation must not only educate about the past, but also help shape the kind of leaders we need for the future.”
There are a lot of different ways Baumgartner’s experience at Heart Mountain can be incorporated into lesson plans about the internment, from studying the art that people made in the camps to exploring their geography and how they were used for local agriculture. Each year students in Colorado have a civics segment as part of their social studies curriculum, and she plans to incorporate what she learned into a section about “what it means to have rights and responsibilities and what happens if those rights and responsibilities disappear.”
She hopes that sharing people’s stories and her own firsthand accounts will help the lesson come alive for students.
“You want to weave as much of everyone’s collective story into the curriculum as you can because you never know what’s going to catch some students and interest them,” she said.
Hot summer months in Colorado come with a bevy of menaces. Among them: toxic algae blooms, which the state health department says residents should be extra vigilant about right now.
The algae, also called blue-green algae, is natural to Colorado waters, but it can be deadly, especially for dogs. In people, exposure can cause symptoms such as stomach pain, fever, headache, sore throat and skin irritation.
“We want everyone to be able to safely enjoy the great outdoors in Colorado,” Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Executive Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan said in a statement. “We are raising awareness about toxic algae so that people can be sure the waters they and their furry friends are playing in are safe.”
The toxic algae-infested waters often look discolored. Water is generally a green color, but can also be red or green. CDPHE staff say stringy mustard-colored water probably just contains pollen.
The water may also smell bad, “resemble thick pea soup”, contain foam or scum. Dead fish or other animals may also be spotted nearby.
“If you think an algae bloom might be toxic, keep kids and animals away from the water — when in doubt, stay out,” advised state toxicologist Kristy Richardson.
A new dashboard through CDPHE shows updated information about toxic algae blooms. Testing so far this summer found toxins at Cherry Creek Reservoir, though that bloom has been resolved.
Excess nutrients in the water, hotter weather and stagnant water make for perfect bloom conditions, though state environmental experts say residents can help prevent toxic waters. They encourage people to pick up pet waste, use less fertilizer, which can end up in the water, and limit the use of de-icers that contain urea.
While fairly common throughout the state, toxic blooms typically aren’t found in rivers or at high-elevation bodies of water.
— KARA MASON, Sentinel Managing EditorU.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told reporters Wednesday, ahead of the Thursday announcement, that farmers, store owners, schoolchildren and people seeking telehealth medical checkups will benefit from the ReConnect and Telecommunications Infrastructure Loan and Loan Guarantee programs.
“Connectivity is critical to economic success in rural America,” Vilsack said in a statement tallying the number of people who could be helped at about 31,000 in states also including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota and Texas.
The statement said the Department of Agriculture plans more spending on high-speed internet in coming weeks as part of a $65 billion Biden administration plan to expand affordable, high-speed internet to all communities in the U.S.
U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto joined Vilsack and Mitch Landrieu, White House infrastructure coordinator, to point to the effect the grants and loans are expected to have in the northern Nevada community of Lovelock, home to fewer than 2,000 people, and the Lovelock Indian Colony.
“There is a need for this connectivity on so many levels,” Cortez Masto said, “whether it brings telehealth, telemedicine, e-learning, workforce development. A connection is so important for so many Nevadans.”
Internet provider Uprise LLC will receive more than $27 million to connect almost 4,900 people, 130 businesses, 22 farms and seven public schools in Lovelock and surrounding Pershing County, officials said.
Masto, a Democrat seeking reelection in November, said federal funds will offer eligible Nevada residents a $30-per-month discount on their internet bill discount and up to $100 toward a computer.
Elsewhere, Midvale Telephone Co. will get $10.6 million to bring high-speed fiber-optic internet to people, businesses and farms in four central Idaho counties — Elmore, Blaine, Custer and Boise — and five southeast Arizona counties: Gila, Graham, Pinal, Cochise and Pima.
The Arkansas Telephone Co. will receive $12 million to connect almost 1,000 people, 10 businesses and 145 farms to high-speed internet in Searcy and Van Buren counties, with low-cost with voice and voice/data starter packages.
Alaska Power & Telephone, Unicom Inc. and Cordova Telephone Cooperative, combined, are slated to receive almost $55.4 million in to connect almost 3,300 people, 118 businesses and seven schools in remote areas by fiber-optic network.
In New Mexico, Continental Divide Electric Cooperative and ENMP Telephone Cooperative are due to receive a combined $18 million in grants to install affordable fiber networks, and Penasco Valley Telephone Cooperative will get a nearly $29 million loan to connect “socially vulnerable communities” in Chaves, Eddy, Lincoln and Otero counties.
Vilsack said the programs will particularly help residents in what he called “persistent poverty counties,” where he said most have access to broadband, but about one in three don’t have high-speed networks needed for telemedicine and distance learning.
He said the goal was “to do what is necessary to make sure every rural resident, regardless of ZIP code has access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet.”
Aurorans and others in the metro area will be able to take a ride on Regional Transportation District buses and trains for free next month, thanks to a proposal by the agency that Aurora’s City Council formally endorsed Monday.
“I think this is extremely important for the city given that we have a number of people, quite a few people, that are reliant upon mass transportation,” Mayor Mike Coffman said of RTD’s Zero Fare for Better Air program. “We have a number of transit-oriented devel-

As the name suggests, the farefree promotion is meant to cut down on the state’s ozone emissions, as well as boost ridership levels that sagged during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Colorado’s General Assembly has voted for the state government to backfill the revenue lost by RTD during the month of August.
Council members Alison Coombs and Juan Marcano in particular said they supported the program and urged the public to take advantage.
“Tell your friends. Make sure that the other folks around you also are aware and have the opportunity to really use this fare-free month so that we can show, (not only) what kind of ridership we can generate, but also what kind of impact we can have on our climate by reducing the number of cars on the road,” Coombs said.

Tina Peters gets recount
A prominent Colorado election conspiracy theorist, Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, will get a recount after all, state officials announced Thursday, now that she has raised $256,000 to pay for the review of her loss in the Republican primary for secretary of state.
Peters demanded a recount after losing her race by more than 85,000 votes, baselessly alleging fraud.
But she did not pay the $236,000 that the Secretary of State’s office initially charged, insisting on a hand recount rather than the machine one they said their rules required. So Peters’ loss was officially certified on Monday.
›› See METRO, 7
Peters then announced she had raised the funds and renewed her request. On Thursday, the Secretary of State’s office announced it would perform a machine recount by Aug. 4 after Peters paid the fee.
Peters said in a statement she had raised the money from individual donors who complied with the state’s $1,250 political contribution limit.
Republican State Rep. Ron Hanks, who had requested a recount along with Peters after losing his U.S. Senate primary, did not submit any funds and will not receive a recount in his race.
Peters was defeated in the GOP primary by Pam Anderson, a former Jefferson County clerk who has criticized Trump’s election lies.
Peters faces several felony charges for her alleged role in breaking into her county’s election system in search of proof of the conspiracy theories spun by former President Donald Trump after his 2020 election loss.
She denies she did anything illegal and contends the charges are political retribution for revealing data that exposes election fraud.
A judge prohibited Peters from overseeing last year’s and this year’s local elections in Mesa County, a western region of the state that is largely rural and heavily Republican.
Trump won it in the 2020 presidential election with nearly 63% of the vote. President Joe Biden won Colorado overall with 55.4% of the state’s vote.
— NICHOLAS RICCARDI, Associated PressTony Ramaeker averages around 14,000 steps a day as he walks around the Nebraska high school where he is assigned to work as a sheriff’s deputy, greeting students arriving in the morning, wandering the hallways to talk to them and watching out for those who might be eating alone in the cafeteria.
The former Marine and longtime youth pastor keeps his office in suburban Omaha stocked with treats such as Little Debbie snacks and Pop-Tarts because eating helps kids in crisis calm down and talk.
But in the back of his mind, a thought always looms: What would he do if a gunman attacked the school?
The latest reminder of that danger came in May when 19 children and two teachers were killed in a fourth-grade classroom in Uvalde, Texas. The fear that the next shooting could happen in their hallways hangs over school resource officers across the United States, exacerbating an already difficult job: They’re called on to be battle-ready officers whom parents and students can trust to protect them.
Yet school police officers have been criticized for their treatment of students of color. Black students,
especially, are often disproportionately arrested or disciplined when a school has armed police, critics say. And students of color report feeling less safe around police than white students.
Officers say they’re acutely aware of the criticism, striving to build relationships with students and interact for more reasons than just discipline. They stress that officers who work in schools need to be specifically trained to work with children and teens. Gone are the days when it was enough to hire an officer near or in retirement and keep a police car parked outside a school. School officers are now asked to be counselors and teachers, working empathetically and diplomatically with students and administrators, while also being an armed guardian.
Ramaeker, who practices mixed martial arts, said he believes he wouldn’t hesitate to do whatever he could to protect his students and staff. He has even thought through how he would use the handgun he has holstered to his hip if he didn’t have time get a rifle he has kept secured in the building since the 2018 Parkland school shooting. He believes officers need to decide what they would do before a shooting happens to be mentally prepared and avoid indecision. Read more of this story online at www.sentinelcolorado.com

Iam a terrible gardener. I hate weeding, and within weeks of planting anything, the tomato, pepper and other plants start to become overrun with unwanted greenery, and it’s just not a pretty sight.
The few plants that do seem to persevere despite my sloppy gardening efforts are the herbs, and they are truly enough of a payoff to keep going.
Having an ongoing supply of fresh herbs on hand during the summer ensures my cooking never becomes dull or uninspired. The secret to excellent pasta salads, tantalizing bruschetta and lively pasta sauces always comes down to a simple handful of chopped fresh herbs.
If a garden – even a terrible garden –is not in the cards for you, you can easily grow herbs in a windowsill pot. Many herbs thrive in containers, and then you can snip off little bunches of basil, dill, oregano and thyme to your heart’s content, knowing there will be more to come.
You can start your herbs as seeds, or purchase small plants and repot them in progressively larger pots as they grow. Read package instructions for how to plant and care for various kinds of herbs.
Now, what to do with all of those wonderful, fragrant herbs? Everything!
To me, the summeriest of all the herbs. Basil belongs to the mint family, and is an essential herb in Italian and Mediterranean
cooking. It’s the key ingredient in traditional pesto. But different varieties of basil (there are over 60!) are also frequently used in other types of cuisines, including Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian.
I use basil in pretty much anything that involves tomatoes: bruschetta, pasta sauces, caprese salads. But don’t stop there – have you ever had basil in a cocktail? Amazing. Add some to your sangria for a surprising burst of flavor.
Or make basil oil by blending up ½ cup fresh basil leaves with ¼ cup olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. You can strain the leaves out if you want a clearer green-hued oil, or leave the pretty green flecks right in there. Drizzle basil oil over roasted peppers, poached salmon, sliced tomatoes and mozzarella, or grilled zucchini and summer squash, to name but a few options.
Although it’s popular in a number of countries and cuisines, we most often associate thyme with European, particularly Mediterranean, cooking. I probably use this herb in my cooking more than any other year round. The taste is potent and decidedly herbal in flavor, with sharp grassy, woodsy and floral notes.
Thyme works well with meats of all kinds, fish, chicken, eggs, pasta, vegetables and beans (I love it with lentils). It’s a great addition to pasta and potato salads.
You can make a delicious quick compound butter featuring thyme. Mince about
a tablespoon of fresh thyme, and blend it with ½ cup softened butter, a teaspoon of minced garlic, and salt and pepper to taste. Use this thyme-flavored butter to finish steaks and chicken breasts and salmon right off the grill. Or add a pat to a baked potato or some hot cooked grains, such as rice.
The humble, unsung hero of the fresh herb world. Yes, parsley can be used as a garnish, either in sprig form, or minced and sprinkled over a dish to give it a finishing pop of color and flavor. But don’t overlook it as an herb to use in all kinds of dishes, both cooked and uncooked.
The fresh, clean, ever-so-slightly peppery flavor of parsley is wonderful. It is highlighted in dishes like Middle Eastern Tabbouleh and falafel, and is also a key component in a bouquet garni, a bundle of herbs used to season many Mediterranean dishes.
I like to add a generous handful of fresh parsley (I prefer the flat-leaf Italian variety to the curly version) to everything from soups and stews to shrimp scampi to grain and orzo salads. It’s excellent in condiments and sauces like salsa verde and chimichurri. And yes, it’s great as a finishing garnish to many dishes as well.
OREGANO
Another easy-to-grow and very versatile herb. Many of us think Italian, Greek or Mexican when we think of oregano, and
with good reason, but it’s also popular in Argentine and Turkish cooking. The flavor is peppery, sharp, a bit sweet, and even a little pleasantly bitter. Use oregano in marinades, dressing, sauces and salads, as well as anything tomato-based.
MINT
If you have ever grown it, you know that once mint gets going, it’s hard to stop! So finding ways to use it is an imperative. Sweet and sharp and refreshing, mint adds interest to drinks (a sprig in a glass of lemonade or a cocktail is delightful), marinades, salads, salsas, pesto and desserts. It is also an important herb in Southeast Asian cooking.
Another prolific herb (part of the mint family, which makes sense). The flavor is piney, a bit lemony, sharp and quite strong; a little goes a long way. You can find terrific uses for rosemary in marinades for meats and poultry, and it’s a great partner to potatoes.
And you can use rosemary sprigs as skewers and make kabobs with them!
Tarragon, chives, marjoram, dill — all terrific options for growing and cooking. The world of fresh herbs is vast. With a few pots on the sill, your summer cooking is about to game up in a big way.

One doesn’t have to look far for Aurora’s vibrant roots. One in five people here are foreign born and according to the latest census, more than 20% of residents have family origins in Mexico. That brings the city great food, dance, art, and, especially, pride — all of which will be on display at the Aurora History Museum for the next year. For the exhibit, museum staff conducted outreach in both English and Spanish to gather input about Mexican culture in Aurora. “The people of Mexican descent who call Aurora home come from all walks of life and have their own individual stories of immigration or a long family history that predates Colorado statehood,” museum director T. Scott Williams says. Over the next year various Latino artists will display their work at the museum, and on June 9, the community can gather at the exhibit for an opening reception. This showcase attempts to capture the stories of people who make Colorado’s third largest city, a mosaic of cultures. Entrance to the museum is always free.

Have you ever wondered what an art exhibit designed by young children would look like? Through August, the Clyfford Still museum is bringing this unique idea to life in an exhibit that was “co-created” with children across the Front Range. Clyfford Still was a leading figure in the abstract expressionist movement, and the Denver museum that houses a large collection of his work is carrying on his iconoclastic legacy with this exhibition, which is part of an initiative to welcome children into the museum. The first four galleries will feature Still’s work, with paintings hung at a low eye-level specifically for young viewers. The rest will display artwork that children from six months to eight years old from Fort Collins, Denver, Lafayette and Boulder helped curate. According to the museum website, these local children “selected and arranged their favorite artworks; shared their perspectives for the gallery and audio content; and helped design interactive activities.” Really puts a new spin on the jab that modern art is so abstract that “a child could do it.”

Through the Design and Build summer internship program at the Museum of Outdoor Arts, eight interns will be putting their final works on display at Marjorie Park. These several unique pieces were created in eight weeks and are site specific to the MOA park. The theme which was provided to the artists was “curiosities,” and they worked under the direction of two professional artists.
MOA’s resident DJ, DJ Manos, will be spinning some tracks, a BBQ food truck will be slinging hash and drinks will be available for purchase. Make sure you check out the other installation pieces while you are there.
The exhibit runs through Dec. 15 and is free to the public.

Long before Aurora was a city, before Colorado was a state and before pioneers ventured across the West, 20 million to 30 million bison roamed the land. Then came the settlers, and extinction for the native grazers neared. The Lakota people called bison “tatanka,” which were an important symbol to the indigenous peoples’ culture. As a part of the Aurora History Museum’s “Mosaic of Cultures: Aurora’s Mexican Community” Artist Arturo Garcia, who was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and now owns a studio in Denver, captures the relationship between the bison and the people who first called this land home through a series of paintings. “This exhibition tells the visual story of a significant event in our nation’s history, and I am grateful to have Mr. Garcia’s work on display to share with our museum visitors,” museum director T. Scott Williams says of the exhibition.

Right: Last season, Roland Thornton became the first Regis Jesuit freshman to qualify for the Class 5A boys golf state tournament since 2009. He is one of three Raiders returning with state experience for the 2022 season, which began with official practice Aug. 1.

PHOTOS BY COURTNEY OAKES/SENTINEL COLORADOIn more than 20 years coaching golf, Craig Rogers has heard a common refrain from his players.
Whether or not it is true takes some time to determine, but Rogers regularly hears players opine “the first shot is the hardest one.”
He passed that along to the nearly 50 players that tried out for his Regis Jesuit boys golf team at Wellshire Country Club on Aug. 1, the first day that teams could hold tryouts and practice ahead of the 2022 season. Very few of the first shots went awry as the Raiders looked to have another deep team.
stein in 2009. He finished tied for 49th, while Irvine tied for 16th (after shooting 72 in the second round at Colorado Springs Country Club) and Dewey finished tied for 60th.
Every new season also brings about the chance for something new to happen for a program.
Eaglecrest, for example, has had its share of top-end talents over the years in Davis Bryant (who won a state championship) and most recently Andrew White, who heads into his senior year looking to become a four-time state qualifier.
What the Raptors haven’t had in many years is multiple state qualifiers, especially the three required to register a team score.
BOYS GOLF“It’s a happy time, but the kids will say the first shot is the hardest they will hit until maybe the state tournament,” Rogers said. “I’ve heard that for 20 years. They know if they falter a little bit, sometimes it can be tricky to get back in good standing. Or at least they think it is.
“But it’s a fun time of year to see what the new kids can do and how much better the older ones got over the summer.”
BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports EditorIn terms of state qualifiers, Rogers’ Regis Jesuit team has the most returning players among any program in Aurora — and one of just a few in the state — with three of the four players who combined to finish ninth at last season’s state tournament back.
Seniors Jake Irvine and Cole Dewey and sophomore Roland Thornton each played at state last season, giving Rogers the most state-experienced team he’s had in several years.
“Usually we’re heavily populated with seniors who graduate and then we are not very experienced the next year,” Rogers said. “This year, having three guys back who have had a taste of it is really nice.”
Thornton made the state tournament as a freshman last season, something Rogers noted hadn’t been done in the program since Chris Wein-
Veteran coach Stan Adams has seen his share of disappointments over the years, so he is cautiously optimistic, but he has the makings of a group that could break the drought.
Leading the way is White, who has made the Sentinel Colorado All-Aurora Boys Golf Team in all three of his previous seasons after placing 14th, 48th and 33rd in three state trips. There will be another White on the course in freshman Greg, who along with senior Preston Unrein give the Raptors more depth than they’ve had in awhile.
“This could be one of our better teams,” Adams allowed. “But it’s just one tournament at a time.”
Cherokee Trail graduated a two-time state qualifier in AndrewJang, but coach Jason LeClaire’s Cougars had a freshman state qualifier last season in Christopher O’Donnell, who tied for 52nd.
Grandview, the city’s highest-finishing team last season in sixth, reloads after all four its state qualifiers — including Lukas Beisner, who finished sixth — graduated.
Coach Michael Martikonis’ Vista PEAK team (which transitions from the now-defunct EMAC to the Denver Prep League) reloads after the graduation of Dawson Thulin, who turned in the best individual performance in program last season when he finished eighth at the 4A state tournament.
Martikonis returns junior Connor Angelini, an All-EMAC first team performer last season.
The 5A state tournament is at City Park G.C. in Denver this season.

Arisk management firm has issued a mixed assessment of the work done so far by Aurora’s police and fire agencies to enact numerous public safety reforms, specifically criticizing how police evaluate uses of force.
IntegrAssure was chosen in February to help the city monitor its progress toward the reforms outlined in a type of sweeping agreement called a consent decree with the state attorney general’s office last year.
The agreement came following outcry over the death in custody of Elijah McClain and after the attorney general’s office investigated the Aurora Police Department and found officers were using force disproportionately against residents of color and that paramedics had been administering sedatives inappropriately.
IntegrAssure’s report — prepared after the end of the first monitoring period, which lasted from mid-February through mid-May — praised Aurora and its public safety agencies for their cooperation in the reform process.
“During this initial period, the City of Aurora and its constituent agencies have cooperated fully with the Monitor and have begun working on, and in some cases have made great strides toward, the implementation of the mandated reforms,” IntegrAssure wrote in its report.
Board, the monitor recognized a need in the department for “not only in-depth investigations, but investigations and reviews which are done with an extremely critical eye, in order to make both the Department and individual APD officers better, and better protect officers and the public alike.”
IntegrAssure wrote that police and fire department leadership along with “the vast majority of rank-and-file members of each department with whom we have spoken” recognize the need for reform.
One of the persistent drivers of reform — identified in the report as well as in the investigation by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office that laid the groundwork for the decree — is the community’s lack of trust in its police force.
In May, IntegrAssure used a survey firm to poll residents on their feelings about the local police and fire departments, using the randomly selected cellphone numbers of Aurorans that IntegrAssure founder Jeff Schlanger later said were culled from a commercial database. In total, 1,164 people completed the survey.

However, the monitor also specifically criticized the shortcomings of the police department’s Force Review Board, a panel of police officers that evaluates significant uses of force based on documents and body-worn camera footage, as well as a lack of coordination while developing new policies.
Even with a Force Review
The poll was taken nearly two months after the firing of Wilson in early April. Wilson has alleged the firing was politically-motivated and fueled by resentment from conservative politicians and union leaders who opposed her approach to police reform.
City Manager Jim Twombly has said the decision was made in response to unspecified failures of management. Dan Oates was selected to serve as interim chief later that same month and began his second stint as chief in June.
Wilson has been credited by reform advocates with rebuilding trust and credibility among the public. The survey did not address Wilson’s firing.
Poll results showed that negative feelings about Aurora police were reported more frequently than positive feelings, with just 34% of all survey-takers saying the police department was doing a good or excellent job, compared to 44% who said it was doing poorly or very poorly.
People of color were also less likely than whites to express a high opinion of the department, with 38% of white respondents saying they thought the department was doing good or excellent work compared to 35% of Asians, 33% of Hispanics and Latinos, 26% of Blacks, and 22% of mixed-race respondents and others.
The majority of all demographics expressed positive feelings about Aurora Fire Rescue, though whites were still more likely than other groups to say the agency was doing a good or excellent job.
Most people, around twothirds of all respondents, also said they felt safe in their neighborhoods, and 61% said they felt about as safe or safer than they did a year ago.
Aurora’s consent decree was implemented following high-profile incidents of police using force against unarmed minority residents, most notably in Elijah McClain’s case.
One internal mechanism for accountability that was repeatedly criticized by the monitor was the police department’s Force Review Board.
As an example of the board falling short, the monitor de-
Omar Montgomery Phil Weiser Jim Twombly Opposite Page: Top left: Former Chief Vanessa Wilson holds a photo during a news conference after three police officers were found to be taking a demeaning photograph at the memorial of Elijah McClain. Also, a collection of screen shots from police body cam video provided by Aurora Police Department during a 2021 arrest. Motorist Preston Nunn was subdued and shocked by officers during a traffic stop, after police say he did not comply with an officer’s demands. Aurora’s police force review board said officers failed to properly de-escalate the situation and the review board failed to focus on that. Coloradoscribed the aftermath of a tense traffic stop in May 2021, during which Aurora police officer Gabriel Nestor pulled his gun on a motorist, Preston Nunn III, who had reached into his clothing after being told to hand over his driver’s license and registration.
Nunn, who is Black, was pulled over after Nestor said Nunn drove dangerously close to him while Nestor was conducting another traffic stop.
At gunpoint, Nunn was ordered to put his hands on his face, “which he failed to do to the officer’s satisfaction,” the report said. The monitor notes that Nestor “ became extremely agitated” during the incident, “using expletives to issue various orders.”
Once police backup arrived, Nunn decided to exit his car and was tackled to the ground and shocked with a stun gun.
The police department’s Force Review Board evaluated the incident the following month, determining that Nestor made a legal traffic stop and used his body-worn camera appropriately but “could have been more professional” and “more in control of himself.”
The board recommended to the district commander over Nestor that the officer receive more training on the use of stun guns and investigating driving under the influence — while the driver allegedly admitted to using marijuana that night and was cited for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, he was not charged with DUI.
But IntegrAssure questioned the Force Review Board’s failure to consider Nestor’s involvement in another use-of-force incident one month prior when he shot a burglary suspect with less-lethal ammunition, which the department deemed “unsatisfactory performance.”
Nestor also allegedly caused a “serious traffic crash” in October 2020, for which he was reprimanded, an incident that was also apparently not considered by the board.
“Moreover, the fact that this situation unnecessarily evolved into one that came perilously close to an officer involved shooting did not consume the Board,” the monitor wrote.
“Simply put, the Board’s review should have been much more critical, in the nature of a deep-diving after-action report, with every aspect of how that which occurred could have been avoided and probed for lessons which could be taught both to the involved officer and to the Department at large.”
They also pointed out that the board did not consider the possible consequences of the suspect being tackled by an officer while multiple officers were pointing their guns at him, and said the board needed to be more probing in its evaluation of officer conduct.
IntegrAssure said it would begin working with the board during the next reporting period.
They also recommended that body-worn cameras be used to supervise officers who are the targets of corrective action and that the practice of assigning new recruits and inexperienced supervisors to late-night, highcrime periods — which police leadership allegedly said was because of the department’s current system of giving veteran officers preference in picking their schedules — needed to be re-examined.
Aurora meeting about half of consent decree mandates so far
IntegrAssure broke down the city’s compliance with 36 of the 70 mandates included in the
consent decree, saying in summary that the city and its public safety agencies “have cooperated fully with the Monitor and have begun working on, and in some cases have made great strides toward, the implementation of the mandated reforms.”
Aurora Fire Rescue was recognized for halting the use of ketamine, a powerful sedative that McClain was injected with prior to his death. Of the nine mandates that IntegrAssure determined the city has complied with already, eight are related to ketamine.
The ninth mandate requires that the city or the Civil Service Commission engage a consultant to advise the commission on hiring practices to ensure the police and fire workforces better represent the community. IntegrAssure said it had been selected by the commission to fulfill this role. Seventeen other mandates were also deemed to be underway and on the right track.
IntegrAssure expressed uncertainty about 10 of the mandates and whether the city would be able to meet the expectations of the decree, including mandates addressing accountability for the use of force.
“We have not seen the degree of self critical analysis that we believe is so important to the process,” the monitor wrote of the department’s Force Review Board. “In addition, it appears that the history of individual officers involved in uses of force is not meaningfully considered during the process of evaluating whether remediation for an officer is required.”
The monitor also expressed concerns about the department coordinating with them on policy creation, mentioning that while they were working with the police department’s legal team and Professional Stan-
dards Section on a policy for documenting contacts with citizens, other PSS employees were working on developing a different policy without consulting the monitor.
IntegrAssure said the city had acknowledged the problem and would be working with the nonprofit Crime and Justice Institute to streamline its policy development process.
“Without such structure, the messaging to the officers can be inconsistent and confounding, thereby being counterproductive to the work and efforts invested into developing effective policies,” the monitor wrote.
Between February and May, IntegrAssure also assembled the new Community Advisory Council, which is expected to “promote diversity of thought and information exchange for the duration of the Consent Decree.”
“Essentially, the CAC will be the Monitor’s eyes and ears in the community providing community perspectives and insight to the Monitor on matters related to each of the areas covered by the Decree,” the monitor wrote.
The group is led by Mosaic Church of Aurora pastor Reid Hettich, Aurora NAACP president Omar Montgomery and Jeanette Rodriguez, an Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office deputy and member of APD’s Community Policing Advisory team.
Members of the newly-formed CAC include:
Maurice Anderson, a former Air Force mental health care worker and investigator for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Melissa Berglund, an education and training program
manager for a child welfare and family services nonprofit, and a former social worker.
Maisha Fields, executive director of the Fields Foundation and daughter of state Sen. Rhonda Fields.
Ronald Garcia y Ortiz, a Cherry Creek School District educator and the district’s director of equity, culture and community engagement.
Willian Gondrez, a U.S. Army veteran, member of the city’s Citizen’s Water Advisory Committee, schoolteacher and president of the Northwest Aurora Neighborhood Organization.
Becky Hogan, former small business owner, Planning and Zoning Commission member and widow of former Aurora mayor Steve Hogan.
Gianina Horton, executive director of the nonprofit Denver Justice Project with a background in civilian law enforcement oversight.
Thomas Mayes, an Aurora pastor and Vietnam War veteran with experience mediating between activists and the Aurora Police Department.
Amy Wiles, director of strategy and business development for UnitedHealthcare.
Schlanger later said the only person with experience as a law enforcement officer on the council was Rodriguez.
IntegrAssure wrote in a news release that the Community Advisory Council will be moderating a town hall between IntegrAssure, the public, representatives of the city and the Colorado Attorney General’s Office on Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Beck Recreation Center.
The event will be streamed online and televised, and community members can submit questions in advance to connect@auroramonitor.org or by filling out the contact form at www.auroramonitor.org.

Children’s Hospital Colorado, where medical staff administered three doses of the opioid antagonist drug naloxone.
Antonio Espinosa-Tovar, 29, admitted to investigators that he had been selling pills and knew the child had taken one after finding half of a pill on the floor, according to a press release from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
When police searched the Aurora home where Espinosa-Tovar lived with his girlfriend and her children, they found three bags on a shelf holding 71 Oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl.
Espinosa-Tovar’s trial in connection with the 2021 incident began Monday, and jurors returned their guilty verdicts on both counts just after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Sentencing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 8.
“We’re grateful that this 3-yearold child was able to recover following Mr. Espinosa-Tovar’s reckless actions,” said District Attorney John Kellner. “While this situation could have ended in tragedy, this man must be held accountable for putting innocent lives in danger. He made a careless choice to leave this deadly poison in a residence where young children were staying.”

The National Foundation for Gun Rights’ lawsuit marks one of the first in what is expected to be a wave of gun control measures across the country following the June 23 Su-
preme Court decision that struck down a New York law requiring people to show why they needed a concealed weapons permit. It was filed Thursday in federal District Court in Denver.
The foundation and its sister organization, the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, have been fighting to repeal the magazine capacity limit since it’s passing in 2013. The law followed the 2012 mass shooting at a theater in Aurora, which killed 12 people and injured 70.
The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision “gave us a four-ton wrecking ball to use against all different types of gun control,” said Hannah Hill, director of research and policy for the National Foundation for Gun Rights, that “gave us an opportunity to take another whack at the mag ban.”
This lawsuit is one of the first the organization plans to file, said Hill, “we expect to be announcing some additional fights soon.”
Conor Cahill, spokesman for Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, declined comment. He said the administration doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners saw an early success this month when they sued the Town of Superior over an assault weapons ban. In that case, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing the town from enforcing their ban.
David Pucino, deputy chief council at Giffords Law Center, a gun control advocacy group, said that he expected a flood of litigation following the U.S. Supreme Court decision.
