WELCOME TO SHANGHAI The name “Shanghai”comes from the
Chinese characters 上
(SHANG) which means
“above” and 海 (HAI) which can be translated as “sea”, and when put together it becomes “above the sea”. There are around 24 million people living in Shanghai, this makes it the biggest city in China and the 8th biggest in the world. Shanghai is divided in 16 districts and 3 counties. Even though mandarin is the official language, as it is in many parts of China, Shanghai has its own dialect: Shanghainese. The city is divided by the Huangpu river in 2 areas: Pudong (the east side of the river) and Puxi (the west side of the river).
