01 Mysteria

Interior and exterior lighting design for a traditional Polish craft experience shop

Lighting Design 丨 Poland , United Kingdom Spring 2022

This project is a combination of the brand concept of Mysteria Handmade Polish Christmas Ornaments and the need to establish an offline experience to create an attractive, flexible, controlled and comfortable lighting environment. The existing building retains its original appearance as a historic building. A new building was added to connect the original building as part of the company's refurbishment. The new building echoes the old one, in line with Mysteria's philosophy of preserving traditional craftsmanship. The lighting design takes into account the connection and stylistic characteristics of the old and new buildings and the functional needs of the Christmas decorations indoor and outdoor experience spaces. The design is divided into three parts: the outdoor area, the function hall and the display room, with separate sensors and lighting controls.

Daylight Analysis

Based on the daylight analysis, it can be seen that the building is surrounded by less shade and can make good use of daylight. The lighting was designed to make the best possible use of daylight in order to create a green building. The average DF of the room is 4.16% . According to the standard, there is a good balance between lighting and thermal aspects, but attention should also be paid to local overheating.

Flexible luminaire design for Wework

This project aims to design an appropriate luminaire for hot-desking and provide a flexible work environment with Good Light. Firstly, both the background information and relevant regulations were researched. Then, the appropriate light source was decided. After considering the design inspiration, expected light intensity, ambient lighting, aesthetic, glare, etc., the initial design of the luminaire was determined. The next step was to develop a mock-up to calculate the intensity distribution. At the same time, the visualization was carried out. Then, the materials, construction, production methods, packing, and budget were well-designed and calculated. Finally, a luminaire data sheet that includes all the necessary information was provided.

Group Project 丨 London , United Kingdom Winter 2021

The design was inspired by the concept of WeWork. WeWork adopts modular design for flexible office space. We use cubes in modular design, imagining each user as a small cube. We want to make co-working more efficient for people who are scattered here. Thus, the light fixture should be flexible to move, connect and adjust, like a real cube. To echo the overall simple design style of WeWork, we choose a basic square in the shape. We use Rubik's Cube as the prototype of the design and develop the shape of the table lamp based on Rubik's Cube.

The switch part will be designed in a Rubik's Cube style, that is, when the Rubik's Cube is closed, it means that the luminaire is closed. When the cube is misplaced, it means open. And both sides of the light source are also designed to make sure that people at both sides of the table will not disturb each other when adjusting the luminance.

Adjust the height: 560 mm – 690 mm

Users can adjust the height when they want to talk face to face. First, the user needs to turn the swivel member loose and then stretch the rod upwards. Finally, tighten the swivel element at the right height to secure the rod.

Cube switch - Adjust luminance

The cube switch can be rotated from either side of the table to enable separate control of the two light sources. The user sitting on one side of the table can turn the switch to turn on the light or adjust the luminance of the light on his side.

03 Baha’i Church

A multi-cultural exchange platform

Architecture&Interior Design Group Project 丨 Shanghai,China

Partner: Zhe Li

Autumn 2019

This project is a church of Baha’i religion and also the space of mutual study and exchange for the public. By investigating the existing Baha’i church buildings and understanding on Baha’i religion culture, the project considers how to break through the architecture based on it, attaches importance to public welfare, and strongly spreads the thought of “religious isogeny and one family of mankind” in Baha’i doctrine. Moreover, some better service design is conducted in this architecture, hoping to build the friendly and inclusive space to help people and provide a place for people to activate and cure their soul. In the meantime, by combining with the new-type interactive technology, a platform that is used for people’s exchange and study is created. Meanwhile, the space for self-inspection and reflection is provided, so that people can intuitively experience the new religion through the architectural and indoor space design. Moreover, people’s spiritual life becomes more abundant and inclusive.

Inspiration

Concept

Historically speaking, the dome was an intensely hierarchical and centrally form.Unlike other traditional roof typologies, such as pitched roofs or flat roofs, which usually have uniformed space underneath, or barrel vaults, whichcreate linear space, domes typically create centrallized and static space, forcing people to look upand create a sense of monumentality through both peogleys reaction and the scale of the structure. It usually symbolizes serenity and power, seen on churches or palaces.Architecturally speaking, it was used as a shape making tool in the sense that the form of the structure is exactly how people sense the interior space.Due to its unique formal quality and standing in architecture history, the dome has become a symbol of classical order and farely appears in modern or contemporary architecture.

History and Religious Atmosphere of the Site

Due to different cultural backgrounds and people often have prejudices against each in many disputes and conflicts. Baha 'i religion to allow people to communicate equally and stereotypes. The central to its brief and its design place of welcome, community and meaning for

religious beliefs, other, resulting religion are intended and to break down design is that it be a for everyone.

Architectural Form Research

Roof, be treated as purely form cleansed of its associative surplus (function, context, iconographic definition), which offers the opportunity for its transformation.I wanted to present the ancient space elements in modern design language.Dome is used and manipulated in the design. The dome space is often sublime, open, introverted, concentrated, with a distinct sense of sacredness, tranquility, and introversion required by religious ceremonies, which is absolutely unified with the space required by religion.

At present, there are about 20000 Baha’i believers in China. They don’t have the fixed gathering site. This project selects the site in Huangpu District, Shanghai, closing to Shanghai Yu Garden and Huangpu River, where have the high human traffic and more visitors. Therefore, it is convenient for attracting more people to experience and visit.

According to the distribution of the surrounding religious buildings, three axes are formed to determine the direction of the three entrances. It means we can respond to a human yearning to come together, to connect to one another, and to something that moves the spirit.

Model

1.The concise space of centrality. 2.Through topological deformation, centrality of the entire architecture is reserved to increase available surface of space. 3.The architectural height and depth adapt to the site. 5.Three main entrances are kept out and extended. The slowly rising ramp connects them with the praying platform. 6.A mediation room and limited exchange space are added in the top and bottom to activate the entire cell. 4.The architecture is transformed on the axis of the nine’s multiple to adapt to the site.

I hope to create a peaceful, harmonious, warm and healing atmosphere in the interior space. People are free to use the space and facilities here. They can sit on the steps and read or rest. They can also participate in or listen to other people's discussions, learn skills and knowledge that they don't have. Perhaps the world's prejudices and conflicts will not go away, but here, people can use the free and relaxed mood to accept and understand others. This may lead to many different discoveries.

Group Project 丨 Qingdao,China

Autumn 2018

I extracted from the traditional urban planning, such as the open block and Qingdao Liyuan, the ideal model of people living together for a long time. I rediscovered the lost neighborhood of modern high-rises, designing a place for makers to return to their roots.

The places we designed are about people and nature, about closer communication between neighbors, about changing architectural space, about open interaction of block space, about limited space and infinite possibilities. The fast pace of life in big cities, the lack of landscape greening, indifferent interpersonal relationships, and the heavy work bring high pressure, tension, anxiety to them.

Installation Design

Individual Project 丨 Linyi,China

Summer 2020

People call calligraphy "painting without images,a piece of music without sounds, a stage without actors and actresses and a building without components and materials." Calligraphic works express various essential factors of beauty - balance, proportion, variety, continuity, contrast, movement, change and harmony - through the different shapesand forms of the lines, their combinations and waysof movement.Calligraphy has also inspired otherarts, and vice versa.

Like music, calligraphy has rhythm as its mainelement. The dots and strokes in thick and light inkor in round or square shapes demonstrate obviousrhythms, like changing and moving musical rhythms, expressing the surging thoughts and emotions of thecalligrapher and musician alike.

So how to present the rhythm of calligraphy in space?

The installation located at Linyi city, the hometown of the famous Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi. It was created to carry forward the traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy art. A three-dimensional installation tried to convey the essence of calligraphy to audience in a brand new way.

Background Collage

In order to get rid of the ominousness, the ancients would hold sacrifices on the waterfront in the spring and autumn, called "Xiuxi".In addition to the sacrifice, people will also have activities such as picking orchids, playing and drinking.

His calligraphy has been praised as the“first running hand under Heaven”. Among them, 21 identical characters are written in different ways, reflecting the calligrapher's creative and aesthetic skills.

In ancient Chinese, the Chinese character of " 之( zhi)" played the role of pronoun and conjunction . I chose 6 characters with obvious characteristics out of 20 characters of Zhi.They can be roughly divided into three types: regular style, running script and cursive script.Their writing speed increased in turn and has more links between strokes. Most characters have slanting shapes.Moving of the strokes is sirnple, smooth and light. They have irregular forms and as typefaces become more dynamic, so do their artistic values.

Site Analysis

The calligraphy square was built in memory of Wang Xizhi. In this calligraphy square, I noticed that there were often a lot of old people writing street calligraphers. They endlessly tracing texts composed of chanzix characters that slowly disappear as the water evaporates. This phenomenon called "dishu" (earth writing or practicing ephemeral. Calligraphy on the ground using clear water as ink. Based on classic Chinese literature, poetry or aphorisms, these monumental letterings, ranging from static regular to highly cursive styles, make the whole body break into a spontaneous dance and infinite formal renewals.

Thus, I want to explore how to use spatial language to show the beauty of calligraphy on the ground?

Concept Model

It is open and closed at the same time: the boundaries between spaces are dissolved and the individual becomes the whole. Man's experience of space is not only visual, but also holographic. Through the invisible closure and opening, thoughts and feelings can be transmitted, full of the meaning of Chinese calligraphy.

I summarized the writing methods and spatial characteristics of the six different ways of writing words of " 之(zhi)" to create different forms of abstract space.

The water is an important gathering space in the Lanting assembly. People gather around the flowing water, play, drink and chat. The starting point of my design exploration is to pursue the poetic expression of "gathering space" and shape the changeable form of water. When writing calligraphy, the lifting and pressing of the brush produces changes in the thickness of the lines, giving people a flavor of rhythm changes.

The the and essence bring beauty people and and design spatial of behind aloof, orientation, and cadence

The installation tries to capture the feeling of "light, soft, floating and moving", explore the essence of Chinese calligraphy, bring the graceful and undilatory beauty to the space, make people meet between the future and nature, and feel an invisible and poetic artistic realm. The design of the space extracts the spatial structure and brushwork of calligraphy fonts, which, behind the relaxed, leisurely and aloof, virtually controls people's orientation, spatial organization and scene presentation, like an cadence brushwork.

Space Details

I use the modulus of human scale strength of the brush when it is pressed, translate the movement of the brush language close to human scale. People can feel the infinite possibilities contact and interaction in the space the installation with the help of the experience.

I try to find common ground with all the word of " 之(zhi)" .I summarized the five points of the change in the way when the word of " 之(zhi)" is written. Taking the curvature of the stroke turning point as the design point, I analyzed the curve of the turning point and the degree of the pressing force when using the brush. we could enjoy the beauty of calligraphy by focusing on the movement of brush, not what the characters literally mean.
