TOPIC SELECTION Low Birth Rates There are numerous countries, especially across parts of Europe and East Asia, where low birth rates have caused a major decrease in population. This means fewer people will be able to join the workforce in coming years.

Endangered Animals in the Bay Area Many wildlife species are facing declining numbers all over the bay area. According to a report by Conservation Lands Network, the Bay Area has 97 endangered or threatened species.

Refugees An unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from home by con ict and persecution at the end of 2016. There are also 10 million stateless people, who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.

Food Security Food loss and waste comprises fully 30% of the food that is produced in the world, that the food system is responsible for around 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that one third of the world’s land is degraded – presenting an immense threat to productivity gains.

Online Impersonation Carl Guardino who is the chief executive of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, which represents the high-tech industry, was the victim of online imper- sonation, and he soon found out he wasn’t alone - friends, colleagues and relatives had stories of usurped identities and tarnished reputations.

BACKGROUND Problem of Endangered Animals in the Bay Area San Francisco is known for landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and Alcatraz. Few people realize however, that the San Francisco Bay Area is home to many different animal species. Animals like the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse, the California Clapper Rail and the San Francisco Garter Snake are rare animals that can be found living in the San Francisco Bay Area. For a variety of reasons, these animals are all threatened or endangered species. That means they could be, or are, in danger of becoming extinct. When an animal becomes extinct, it disappears forever like the dinosaurs and will never be born again. If we want to protect these animals from disappearing forever, we need to protect their natural habitat or home. By protecting nature in the San Francisco Bay Area, we can help save these animals!

Objective The organization “Ready to Care will help them to understand the current condition of the threatened animals and inform the ways how to help them. The organization will provide outdoor activities that people can learn about 90 threatened animals in the bay area, housing, caring for the threatened animals, educating programs for youths, volunteering opportunities, and guidelines how local residents can help and protect them with urban living life.

E N DA NGERED AN I MALS I N SF

THREE IDEAS OF MY TOPIC Idea One: Learn and Share to Help Protection Question: How can I encourage people to do their share to help protect the natural environ- ment for these endangered species in bay area? Summary: Teaching friends and family about the wonderful wildlife, birds, sh and plants that live near them will be the rst step to protect endangered species. I would like to inform people how interesting and important the endangered species are.

Idea Two: My Home for Wildlife Friendly Question: How can I help to make my home wildlife friendly? Summary: Millions of animals die every year because of being attracted by garbage in shelter, stucked in a plastics, and collided with windows. If people remember regulations that can prevent losing local wild animals, It will be helpful for saving the endangered animals. Thus, I want to provide a list of making my home wildlife freindly so that people can be acknowledged saving endangered animals is not dif cult.

PHYSICAL BRAINSTORMING WALL Exploring San Francisco Wildlife In order to investigate this problem, I explored locally endangered and thriving animals in the four divisions of the bay area, which are the East bay, San Francisco & the Peninsula, South bay, and North Bay, to see how their population was decreased or increased over recent periods of time, as well as how they correlated to each other. From my brainstorming wall, I found out all animals are having a web of life. If one string of the web is ripped, then all ecosystems will be affected and potentially destroyed.

SWOTS

With a SWOTs analysis, ReadyToCare will identify what my brand does well and where it needs to improve. It provides opportunities to focus on both the current situation and the future of local endangered animals in San Francisco.

Strengths The organization is only focusing on the entire bay areas for protecting endangered animals. It makes convenient to inspire local residents about endangered species based on their location.

Weaknesses The habitats for major endangered animals cannot be de ned clearly because they migrate to different regions by losing their homes. Also, the targeted audience is limited to local residents.

Opportunities There are many different ways to help endangered species in the bay area by donating, joining activities, educating youths, volunteering, and telling the Congress to reinforce the laws.

Threats Many luxury houses, golf courses, and large companies are threatening the natural environment by expanding their businesses. It is hard to stop their constructions because of their enormous invest- ment as well as devotion into economy.

IDENTITY FORMATION As the quote says “No man is an island, no man stands alone. Likewise, and individual animal could not live by itself. It has to interact with the other creatures as well as its environment to survive. Therefore, endangered animals must be conserved by all means possibles. TONE/ KEYWORDS Tone We are fortunate to have enormous lands and diversity of species in the bay area. With given gifts by nature, it is important to share the lands for people and endangered animals to create healthier ecosystem. Providing hopeful messages will encourage the audience to engage more with protecting local endangered animals.

Keywords Hopeful Desmond Tutu says “hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” Like this phrase, I would like to express more hopeful feelings to viewers. The bright mood will encourage people that we can still make a big difference.

Supportive The word “supportive” is described as showing agreement as well as giving help and encouragement. To be able to make a change for threatened animals, supporting the idea of saving local endangered animals is key.

Communal We are stronger as a group than as an indi- vidual. Thus, we all should think in a coopera- tive and communal way, set up local care hubs for saving endangered animals, and create growing communities.

POSTER COMPOSITION These poster compositions are from my actual photographs. I visited the Hamilton Wetland in Novato and Bedwell bay front park in San Mateo in order to observe the habitats of local endangered animals. This park is protecting a lot of critically endangered animals including California Clapper Rail that was listed in the Endangered Species Act, 1973 and declined the population since 1973. Although this area has been protected for long term, this park seems to have threated environment because of a lot of main companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google. Thus, I found that this park is the best place to inform people why they should learn and support these animals.

NARRATIVE MAGAZINE First, I decided to create a monthly magazine for San Francisco & Peninsula area. Although my brand supports four different areas, I narrowed down to one to provide how the visual system will work. This magazine kept the design elements of ripped paper and color systems to be part of the branding system. In addtion, I used lines and color halftone images to attract viewers with a modern design. The goal of this magazine is informing the monthly issue of local endangered animals in the San Francisco area and bringing more people to introduce activities to support the animals and join in my brand.

EVENT COMPONENTS After checking information of my concept through magazine, now, people with children can participate in the event “Junior Ranger Program. One of critically endangered animals in San Francisco is the Western Snowy Plovers. Their habitats are mostly located in Ocean Beach. Since it is very popular site for travellers and citizens, there have been problems with trash. The trash was threatening the birds and their habitats. Thus, both children and adults can clean up the sand, save homes for local endangered animals and learn how to keep protect them in community. The reason why I chose this event is that I believe young generation can change the future. This event will have four stations, which are based on street name. The junior rangers will start from Balboa station to Pacheco station by getting all resources for clean-up and ranger activities. In order to motivate the rangers for completing activities, the staffs will provide a stamp from Lincoln to Pacheco station. At the end, they will receive a patch to prove their successful completion.

Components The components for this event can provide a booklet, ID card, clean-up resources: a pair of gloves and bucket, ranger vest, cap, and stamping station.

EVENT BOOKLET One of components for the event “Junior Ranger Program” is a booklet. It has a significant role to provide guidelines about this program and exciting activities for rangers. The booklet has a slogan of the program named “# Share the sands.” The title shows brief description of where the rangers participate in the event. This activity is for western snowy plovers who have been critically endangered in Ocean Beach. In order to infrom the location their habitats and increase the awareness of how critically the birds are threatened, this ranger program can allow young generations to learn and support this issue by cleaning up the sands. Two different groups of rangers, which are 5 – 8 and 9 – 13 year old groups, are using the same book; but, they will complete the different number of activities. It has some knowledges of the western snowy plovers, their threats, clean-up tips, and fun activities such as a maze and matching game. Using one of three colors in my branding system, I decided to create the booklet with modern and high-end style design. Keeping the main design elements: lines, torn papers, and color halftone effect, It captures my targeted audience’s attention effectively.

The booklet will serve as an event guiding book. Instead of carrying many different papers and books at the program, this one booklet will provide convenient environment for rangers and staffs. The event has four different stamping stations: Balboa, Lincoln, Lawton, and Pacheco station. These stamping stations are named after the street name next to Ocean Beach. Thus, both junior rangers and staffs can find the four stations and public facilities easily through the booklet. Each station will give a reward to rangers so that they will more likely to follow the track and complete their tasks. In addition, rangers will get a bonus reward if they collect a full of trash in a bucket. That special reward can motivate the rangers to engage with the program efficiently.

As the junior rangers started participating in the program, the first component they receive is an ID card. Yellow colored card is for 5 to 8 year old. and Mint colored card is for adults or staffs. Each card has three different levels of western snowy plovers. By just looking at the images of eggs, a chick, and adult western snowy plover, people can easily notify each color implies specific aged groups in the program.

The ranger vest is considered as the representative symbol for being in a ranger program. This vest can not only protect them from rough weathers but also clarify themselve as rangers for the ReadyToCare.

EVENT STAMP STATION Because my targeted audience in this event is mostly young children who have age range between 5 to 13 year old, some of them may lose interest if the event does not have interesting activities to attract them. Thus, giving a reward as a stamp at each station will capture their attention. This will increase participating rate of this event as well as inspire junior rangers to follow the order of event.

DEGITAL MEDIA WEBSITE Another influential action for supporting this concept is donation. Donating money towards rehabilitation research for biologist is valuable and needed at the most. To bring more people in donation, I created a website to provide detailed information of its work, programs, and donating methods. The website will particularly focus on donation. What’s special about this website is giving transparent information of how the fund has been used so that people can feel secure about their contribution.

SUMMARY The mission of “Ready to Care” is to learn and protect local endangered animals around the four different bay areas: north bay, south bay, east bay, and peninsula. We safeguard populations of endangered animals in the bay areas and preserve their habitat. As the quote says “No man is an island,” No man stands alone. Likewise, an individual animal could not live by itself. It has to interact with the other organisms as well as its environment to survive. Removing one animal from the ecosystem will compromise the life of other organisms that interact with it. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, one lost plant species can lead to the loss of 30 other insects, plant, and other animal species found in the higher levels of the food chain. These individual species of plant or animal are sometimes called the keystone species. If that species is removed, the whole ecosystem will be changed drastically. Endangered animals, therefore, must be conserved by all means possible. The organization will provide a deeper understanding of the need to preserve endangered species in the bay areas by a junior ranger program for adults and youths, magazine, and website.
