Durga Puja: Great festival of Bengali community


Durga puja is one of the greatest festivals celebrated by the Bengali community. It is a 4-day festival and celebrated in west Bengal along with some of the eastern states of the country. Goddess Durga is worshipped during the festival. The festival is celebrated with huge excitement and enthusiasm. This festival is celebrated for the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demonmahisasura. It is celebrated in honor of the women's power (Shakti) in the universe. It is celebrated in honor of good over evil, light over darkness. It is said that she was called upon by the 3 lords to defeat the demon. The battle continued for 10 days and on the last day she killed him and that is why Durga Puja is celebrated.


Though it is a festival of Hindus it is also a time where the friends and family meet and reunite. In this ceremony people fast for about 10 days. The last 4 days are named as shashthi, Saptami, mahaashtmi and mahanavami and these are celebrated with much sparkle in India. This festival is celebrated with a lot of devotion. Being devoted for 10 days and eating nothing but fruits is a difficult thing to do. The way of celebrating this festival differs from place to place, it differs for different customs and different people. The legends say that Goddess Durga was born to Himalaya and Menka. It is believed that she became sati to marry Lord Shiva. The festival is celebrated since lord Rama worshipped her so as to gain powers from her to defeat Ravana and free Sita.


The communities celebrate this festival by making large 'pandals' and decorating them. People who do not make pandals decorate their home temple and worship the Goddess Durga there. On the last day what people do is they go to the holy river to immerse the deity. The worship of Goddess Durga is done on a magnificent scale. Every place is sparkling with beauty. Along with the Durga aarti, which in itself is so relaxing, we can see mouth-watering dishes to eat. To enlighten the students about all this Durga Puja Assembly in School can also be held. Durga puja celebration ideas in school may include enacting a drama. The drama may show the history of Goddess Durga how she was born, married and defeated the demon and how this shows that the good wins over evil always. They should know that the festival teaches you to have faith in yourself and have a belief that nothing can ever beat the good. This celebrations tells the students about the religious significance and let them know about one of the many Gods and Goddess.


With this students may also be asked to make their own pandals on a smaller version and a fair can be made in the school itself. Students will be so happy to do all this stuff.
