A MESSAGE FROM
Ms. Sanders
A
Dear SHS Class of 2020, As your senior year comes to an end, I know you're grieving the loss of the traditional finale you've always envisioned: prom, graduation, and all of the year-end ceremonies and celebrations to share with your classmates, friends, and family. These are all an essential part of the classic American rite of passage, and to miss them just isn't fair! My heart breaks for you. The generation following World War II is known as the Greatest Generation because they rose above their challenges and developed strength, courage, a strong work ethic, and overall resilience. As a member of the Covid-19 Class, you, too, will have a unique legacy and perhaps emerge even stronger. Is the SHS Class of 2020 the next Greatest Generation? I know I think so!
I hope you can use some of this time to journal your thoughts and experiences so you can share it with your family and friends in the future! As tough as this is right now, one day, you will look back and realize this was the time you stopped taking simple, everyday things for granted. You learned the value of slowing down, living a less chaotic life, getting by with much less, and surviving just fine. You discovered that you were more creative, compassionate, and stronger than you knew! Ultimately, this experience will teach you never to give up, always to persevere, and that, yes, things really do get better. You will take these lessons with you as future leaders, and you will rock this world!
On a selfish note, I'm sad to miss watching you receive your scholarship awards, to hug you, and say a proper goodbye. But, I'm so honored to know you! Thank you so much for making our school and community better just by being you. Seniors, you are VERY fortunate to come from a community that supports you this much! You earned your national, state, and local scholarships by maintaining a strong GPA, choosing challenging classes, being involved in co-curricular and community activities, overcoming adversities, and by submitting a scholarship notebook and additional scholarship applications to various organizations. That is hard work, and you should be proud of yourself. Our local scholarship committees were thoroughly impressed with the outstanding quality of your scholarship notebooks, your applications, and the genuine and passionate young adults that you are. Many have shared how difficult it was to choose— they wanted to support you all because you are all so deserving! Many of us share these sentiments, including all your fans at Sequim High School. Without a doubt, I know you will all enjoy success in your future. I'm proud of all the hard work you've done throughout your four years, and especially this year, to earn your scholarships and honors. Here's to the Class of 2020 - the Next Greatest Generation! Sincerely, Ms. Sanders
A MESSAGE FROM
O
Mr. Langston
Dear Seniors,
On behalf of all the teachers and staff at Sequim High School, I want to express how proud we are of your accomplishments this year, especially considering the challenges you continue to face. We’re proud of your diligence and hard work and look forward to following your successes in the years to come.
Announcing scholarships at the Scholarship Awards Ceremony is something I enjoy each year. I appreciate the time to reflect on every senior that receives a scholarship, which is not an easy task. It takes time, commitment, and responsibility to earn these awards, and I hope that you feel just as proud of your achievements as we do. Thank you for continuing to work toward your future goals despite the current obstacles. I’d also like to express my gratitude to the scholarship donors. Without the support of our local community, our seniors wouldn’t be equipped with the funding they need to attend their programs and reach their successes. We are lucky to live in such a generous and caring community! Congratulations to the Class of 2020 scholarship award winners! We’re proud to have such a great group representing Sequim High School, and we wish you the best of luck in your future.
Sincerely, Mr. Langston
Celebrating TOP 10% & HONOR SOCIETY
Congratulations to our seniors who have worked hard throughout their high school careers to receive the honors they deserve! The Top 10% of Sequim High School’s Class of 2020 has maintained high GPAs, which requires self-discipline, motivation, determination, and focus. Each year the top ten percent of the graduating class wears honor cords at graduation in recognition of their academic excellence. Since their freshman year, members of the Sequim High School National Honor Society have maintained a GPA of 3.4 and above, and have performed a minimum of 20 community service hours per year. Upon graduation, they earn an Honor Society medallion. These outstanding students have not only exhibited academic excellence but have also worked diligently to return service to our community.

CONGRATULATIONS! Meet the Scholarship Recipients
Each fall, members of Sequim High School's senior class start the long process of preparing for the next step in life, and those who opt to continue their education often require financial assistance to do so. Through the generosity of the local community, graduating seniors have the opportunity to gain that support from neighborhood businesses and organizations.
THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Surprising to many, this unique program isn’t a part of every high school experience. In fact, each year students return to Sequim and share with Ms. Sanders how their new college classmates had never heard of a scholarship notebook program! This proves what we all know —the Olympic Peninsula is a special place filled with generous community members and dynamic students. After submitting a scholarship notebook, many seniors continue the search independently and apply for additional local scholarships. Through this process, they earn further support, including regional, state-wide, and national financial assistance.
MEET THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The following 59 Sequim High School Class of 2020 seniors have received more than two million dollars in total scholarship awards. Of that amount, over $325,000 comes directly from our local community! In addition, our scholarship recipients wrote snippets about their lives that they hope to share with you: what they want to study, why they chose their program, their favorite memories, and more. Enjoy getting to know Sequim High School’s Class of 2020 scholarship award winners, and join us in celebrating their successes!
ADAM AWAWDA PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY CRIMINAL JUSTICE
I knew I wanted to study Criminal Justice because, to me, there is nothing I love more than helping people in need. When I was contemplating a career, I knew that whatever I pursued, I'd want to make the world a better place. It also makes me feel like I'm making a difference in helping create a more positive world for all. Maybe the above gives this away, but something you may not know about me is that I love to spread positivity and happiness. There's a lot I will miss about Sequim and my high school experience. Probably the thing I'll miss the most is playing sports. I loved my time playing football and lacrosse with my teammates and coaches.
$1,000 Lincoln Park BMX Scholarship $57,320Â Portland State University WUE Scholarship
I'M MOST EXCITED ABOUT TAKING A BIG STEP IN MY LIFE AND A STEP TOWARDS THE CAREER I'VE ALWAYS WANTED. HONESTLY, I DON'T REALLY FEEL NERVOUS AT ALL! I'M MOSTLY JUST EXCITED TO START MY FUTURE.
BRENTON BARNES PENINSULA COLLEGE COMPUTER ENGINEERING
I'm really going to miss the home-town feel of Sequim. This town was a great place to grow up in, and I know that I'm lucky to have experienced it. Attending Peninsula College, however, gives me the opportunity to continue living close to home as I transition into the next chapter of life. I'm mostly excited about expanding on my current level of knowledge, especially within a subject that I'm very interested in. Even though I already really enjoy working with computers and Computer Engineering, I know there's still a lot to learn. I'm looking forward to growing into an expert.
$300 Peninsula Tennis Club $1,000 Bob Duncan Memorial Scholarship
I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED EVERYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH ELECTRONICS, EVEN AS A KID. THAT'S WHY I DECIDED TO PURSUE AN EDUCATION IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING. I'LL GET TO STUDY SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY AND HOPEFULLY MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT.
DEVEN BIEHLER WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY COMPUTER SCIENCE
I decided to apply to Washington State University because it was financially affordable for me. I'm also looking forward to spending my days and nights on their amazing campus. Even though I'm really going to miss the small town of Sequim, especially all the great relationships I made with my family and friends, I'm happy to be moving to Pullman. I want to study Computer Science because I truly believe it will help me be a part of something bigger. There will undoubtedly be a future technological revolution, and I'm excited to be a part of that. Wherever I am and whatever I'm doing, I always want to make my community a better place. I can start small in Pullman and wherever I go from there, and eventually work in computers to make the whole world a better place.
$2,000 SEF James Halloran Memorial $10,674 Washington State College Bound Scholarship $4,895 Washington State University Educational Grants
I AM MOST EXCITED ABOUT ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES I WILL HAVE AT SCHOOL AND IN THE FUTURE. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I'M ALSO NERVOUS ABOUT NOT FINDING THE OPPORTUNITIES I WANT.
MAKENZIE CAMPBELL PENINSULA COLLEGE NATURAL RESOURCE SCIENCE CRIMINAL JUSTICE
For me, Peninsula College is a great school since it's close to home. I can stay connected to family and a place I love. At the same time, I'm excited to meet new people, expand my community, and further my education. At Peninsula College, I plan to study both Natural Resource Science and Criminal Justice, although I hope to work in law enforcement after I graduate. Something that you may not know about me is that I'm a very family-oriented person, which is partially why I'm happy to be staying close to home. I'm also not afraid to share my opinion about things, even if it's different than others. One thing that I'll miss about high school and Sequim is my teachers. I'm sad that I never got to say bye to them.
$1,000 International Footprinter Scholarship $1,000 Sequim Association of Realtors $2,500 Agnew Helpful Neighbors Club
Oh—and I'll miss all of the fun shenanigans in the high school parking lot!
I'M MOST EXCITED ABOUT MOVING FORWARD—TO START A NEW SCHOOL, BEGIN NEW STUDIES, AND MEET NEW PEOPLE. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, GROWING UP SCARES ME!
SAMMANTHA CHURCH RIDGEWATER COLLEGE DRAFTING COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
I applied to Ridgewater College because it's one of the few schools that has an online course in Computer-Aided Design (CAD). I wanted to study CAD because I love learning and I want to help people with my career. My dream is to use my skills to build houses in disaster areas. Something unique about me is that I'm the first in my family to do a lot of things: the first since my grandparents to graduate high school, the first since my grandpa to go to a college, and the first to be bilingual. I'll miss the comforting routine that high school provides, and I'll miss my friends. I'll also miss the staff and all the hard work they do. I appreciate the wonderful experience that high school gave me.
$1,000 The Grange Insurance Association Scholarship $2,000 Soroptimist International of Sequim $2,500 Shipley Center Fred Chan STEMM Scholarship $1,500 William & Esther Littlejohn Foundation $8,000 Albert Haller Foundation
I have a lot of good memories, but two in particular come to mind: when we went to Helen Haller for a couple of days to teach kids how to code, and in AP Language when I got to give my class a lengthy presentation about Star Wars. Both were fun experiences!
ALTHOUGH NERVOUS TO GROW UP, I’M MOST EXCITED ABOUT MOVING FORWARD AND HELPING PEOPLE WITH WHAT I LEARN.
EMILY CONLIN WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY BIOLOGY ANTHROPOLOGY
I applied to WWU because I enjoy the city of Bellingham. I also heard great things about the science program and the whole school in general. I'm going to study Biology and perhaps Anthropology. I love science, and it's always been so fascinating to me, especially human sciences. I'm proud that I received Admission with Distinction and will most likely be a part of the AEES (Advance in Excellence and Equity in Sciences) Program. I'm going to miss a lot about high school. In particular, I'll miss my friends and teachers, specifically my lab group in Physics and my teacher Mr. Sullivan.
$3,000 Virginia Nitterhouse Foundation $2,000 Western Washington
I'm excited to learn, grow, and meet more people. While at WWU, I hope to gain more hobbies and passions, although I'm equally as nervous about the inevitable uncertainties and how hard college might be.
University Admissions Scholar Award $7,324 Washington College Grant $6,645 WWU Educational Grants
I LOVE MUSIC A LOT. I THINK A PERSON'S PREFERENCE IN MUSIC TELLS THE MOST ABOUT WHO THEY ARE!
BRIANNA COWAN SEATTLE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY NURSING
I'm going to Seattle Pacific University because it has a great nursing program. Plus, the campus is very close to downtown Seattle. When I toured the school, the atmosphere felt very positive, and every student and faculty member that I met was friendly. After studying Nursing, I'd like to become a pediatric nurse practitioner and work with kids. Something you might not know about me is that I love corgis, coffee, and connecting with others! I'm excited to meet new people at college and make lifelong friends. I'm passionate about nursing and medicine, so I can't wait to learn about all the different topics.
$1,000 Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Scholarship $1,000 Karen Byrd Memorial Scholarship $1,000 Sequim Valley Lions Club
I'm going to miss the smalltown atmosphere of Sequim. I loved growing up in a community that focused on helping others.

I'LL MISS THE TEACHERS I HAD THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL. THEY ALL TAUGHT ME SOMETHING ABOUT MYSELF THAT I'LL NEVER FORGET.
GEMMA DAVIS PENINSULA COLLEGE WHATCOM COLLEGE NURSING
I'm going to study Nursing at Peninsula College, but I hope to transfer to Whatcom College in Bellingham eventually. I'm excited to move out of my home-base, meet new people, and be on my own. I want to be a nurse because my mother is one. Nursing is needed everywhere, and I'd love to travel someday. I'm already a few steps ahead thanks to Running Start at PC. When I graduate high school, I'll have most of the prerequisites finished, as well as a full Associates of Arts Degree. I'll miss having the beach at my fingertips, as well as seeing my teachers every day. My time at SHS was not long enough. It feels like I blinked and it was over.
$500 SSD Rick Kaps Memorial $1,500 William & Esther Littlejohn Foundation
Some of my best memories were in Spanish and Science, especially with Mrs. Gould. I loved her active spirit when she taught the class. I'm excited about going to a new school, but I'm also nervous about being away from home.
I LOVE TO SURF (EVEN IN COLD WATER!) AND SKATEBOARD WITH MY FRIENDS.
KYLE DESUMMA UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
I applied to UW because it has a wonderful program in Environmental Studies, plus a beautiful campus close to home and superb learning opportunities. The dream and goal I've had for my entire life has been to improve our world through global environmental restoration and conservation by spreading awareness about the suffering our planet endures every day. I'm going to miss my friends, a lot, and the memories I've created here. I enjoyed hanging out with my group and bringing friends from my old home to meet the amazing people I've met here.
$1,000 Gardiner Garden Club $1,500 William & Esther Littlejohn Foundation $2,000 Sequim Sunrise Rotary James and Agnes Williams Scholarship $8,000 Albert Haller Foundation $77,032 University of Washington College Bound Scholarship
I'm very excited about what college has to offer, not only for my career and aspirations but also for the opportunities for lifelong memories. I'm a little nervous, however, about being away from home and on such a large campus.
I'M HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL: TO HELP IMPROVE OUR ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY IN ANY WAY THAT I CAN.
JESSICA DIETZMAN WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY BUSINESS MARKETING
I applied to WWU because it has a great community feel: not too big or too small. I got Admission with Distinction and am super excited to meet new people, play club and intramural sports, and join a Christian club! I hope to study Business Marketing in the honors program, with an emphasis on sustainability. I chose this field because there is so much I can do with a degree in business. Although I'm nervous about living away from my family's support, I'm excited about meeting new people, and I'm ready for the challenge. I know it'll be good for me!
$300 Peninsula Tennis Club $1,000 John and Margaret Maxwell Future of Conservation Award $2,000 SEF Woodward Ward Memorial Scholarship $2,500 Agnew Helpful Neighbors Club $2,500 P.E.O. Chapter JC STAR Scholarship $3,000 WWU Admissions Achievement Scholarship
I'm going to miss everything about SHS! It's been a great four years, and I'll cherish all the memories forever! I'll miss laughing with my friends on the way to Mr. Van De Weghe's class, and going to the library to chat with Coach Rapelje about life! I'm going to miss seeing everyone in the halls and playing sports in front of the fans! I'll miss dressing up like crazy for each spirit day and going out to lunch with my friends.
THIS IS KIND OF CHEESY, BUT I FEEL LIKE EVEN ONE SMILE CAN BRIGHTEN SOMEONE'S DAY! I SPENT MY TIME AT SHS TRYING TO SMILE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, KNOWING THAT IT COULD'VE HELPED SOMEONE!
KAYLEE DUNLAP EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
I applied to Eastern Washington University because I loved the campus and what it had to offer. I'm excited to attend football games, meet new people, and make new friends! I want to study Early Childhood Education because I have always loved the idea of teaching and working with little kids, I want to help them learn and be a mentor! I'm excited about getting involved in the student body government and leadership at EWU. I'm going to miss a lot about SHS, but I'll probably miss the teachers and staff the most. I'll also miss the Friday football games and hanging out with my friends.
$2,000 Sequim Pioneer Association $500 SEA Future Educator Scholarship $1,000 SSD McDonald Memorial $1,000 Sequim Elks #2642 Academic Scholarship $4,000 Eastern Washington University Scholarship
Although I'm most excited about meeting new people, I'm also nervous about leaving home and being away from my family.
I AM A HUGE ANIMAL LOVER AND ENJOY VOLUNTEERING WITH WAG. I HAVE TWO DOGS AT HOME AND OFTEN HOUSESIT FOR MY NEIGHBORS' DOGS AND CATS.
ERIN DWYER UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO COGNITIVE SCIENCE POLITICAL SCIENCE
I applied to USD because the school environment, education system, and infrastructure are what I was looking for in a college. When I toured the campus, I felt at home, and a part of me knew this is where I belonged. I hope to study subjects that I'm passionate about, which will help me build the skills to become a family attorney. I'll probably focus on Cognitive Science and Political Science, as well as Chemistry or Business. I'll miss the teachers at SHS the most. So many of them have been incredibly supportive and made education enjoyable. I'll treasure the memory of going to FBLA State last year, and to ASB's last Jostens and Lock-In! It was amazing to be with some of my closest friends and just have fun. Although I'm nervous about taking the next steps in life, I'm also excited about it. I can't wait to attend college and finally become a family attorney, which is something I've dreamed about for a long time.

I WILL ALWAYS FIGHT FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT FIGHT FOR THEMSELVES, OR THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN UP. I WANT TO ADVOCATE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WHO SUFFER DUE TO THE BROKEN FAMILY COURT SYSTEM.
LILY ENGESET WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY BOTANY HORTICULTURE
I applied to Western because of the beautiful scenery in Bellingham. The city is far enough away so that I can spread my wings, but close enough for me to still visit home. Overall, I'm excited to meet new people! I'd love to study Botany because I enjoy learning about plants and understanding how they grow and how we can use them. My parents call me a green thumb, and I can't disagree. I have too many plants to count, and I have to remind myself that I don't have room for any more! I also have an interest in art, and I would love to be able to combine the two in some way. I'm looking forward to joining as many clubs as I can! Western has some enjoyable options like art, plants, nature, poetry, and more.
$1,000 Sequim Prairie Garden Club
I'M MOST EXCITED TO EXPLORE A NEW CITY, MEET NEW FRIENDS, AND, ULTIMATELY, TAKE THE NEXT STEP IN MY LIFE. I'LL MISS MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS, BUT I KNOW CHANGE IS A GOOD THING.
WREN FIERRO-BURDICK PENINSULA COLLEGE PRE-MED
I want to study Pre-Med, as I've been interested in medicine since I was young. I want to work in a field centered around compassion and service, and it is for this reason that I wish to become a cardiac surgeon. If I pursue this career, I hope to someday live and work in New Zealand, where there is a current shortage of surgeons. I look forward to joining the choir at Peninsula College, as well as participating in the outdoor-focused clubs they offer. I'll miss all the friends I've made, and the connections I've made within our beautiful town.
$500 SHS Honor Society Scholarship
I'm most excited about having opportunities to help others and to educate myself. At the same time, I'm nervous about keeping up with the rigorous studies associated with achieving a doctorate.

KJIRSTIN FORESMAN UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON NURSING
I applied to the UW because I always knew I wanted to be a Husky. I love Washington and think about coming back to Sequim after getting my degree. I love it here, and I like the idea of being close to home while also being at a university with cuttingedge STEM programs. I believe that I'm a hard worker and seldom back down from my goals or give up. I'm super excited that I received a full ride, and that my cat is also accompanying me to Seattle! I will miss my AP teachers. They've taught me so much, especially to look at things differently. I'm also going to miss just doing funny stuff, like throwing an impromptu potluck in Mr. OMera's class. (And, yes, he was confused.) I'm excited to be in a completely different environment. There will be a lot of opportunities for me. At the same time, life in a big city is a bit intimidating.

I PLAN ON STUDYING NURSING. I’VE ALWAYS FELT THE NEED TO HELP AND TAKE CARE OF OTHERS, AND I FIND HAPPINESS IN THAT. I ADMIRE AND LOOK UP TO ALL THE HEALTHCARE WORKERS WHO ARE, ESPECIALLY NOW, WORKING NONSTOP FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT.
KYAH FUKUNAGA CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY COMPUTER SCIENCE
I applied to Central Washington University because my aunt and uncle both attended the school, and my aunt even worked there for a bit. They both loved their experiences, and after visiting a few times, I really fell in love with the campus and surrounding environment. I can see myself there, and I'm excited! I'm planning to study Computer Science. During my freshman year at SHS, I took an AP Computer Science class and learned that I love coding, programming, and working with computers. I continued taking programming courses, and I can't wait to study more about it in college. One thing that you might not know about me is that I love to play the guitar!
$500 SHS Honor Society Scholarship $5,000 Central Washington University President's Award $750 CWU High School Test Score Scholar
I will miss a lot about high school and Sequim, especially the teachers. They have always been so kind, caring, funny, and, overall, great educators and mentors.
I'M EXCITED TO CONTINUE LEARNING AND TO GAIN NEW KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCES.
ADRIAN FUNSTON SEATTLE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY
I applied to SPU because it's a leading school in psychology in Washington. I also appreciate its Christian-based environment. I'm excited to dive deeper into the field of psychology and possibly join "Chamber Singers," plus play intramural sports, meet new people, and make new friends. I hope to study sports psychology specifically. This field interests me because I can use it in any job and it's a great skill to have. I've always had a strong passion for sports, especially soccer, and I want to help athletes reach their full potential. I am a hard worker with a positive attitude. I always want to get the job done well, whatever it takes. I like to understand the "why" behind a concept and then be able to comprehend the "how." I want use that knowledge to help solve problems or navigate situations in life.

I'M A CARING PERSON AND WILL DO WHATEVER I CAN TO GET THE BEST OUT OF PEOPLE AROUND ME. I HOPE TO FOSTER AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE REACHES THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
HOPE GLASSER PENINSULA COLLEGE TEACHING
I'm excited to attend Peninsula College because I'll be able to continue playing basketball while also furthering my education. Sports have always meant a lot to me. And in my opinion, it's like its own language, teaching me about myself and how to be a team player. After I finish my studies, I hope to be a teacher and a coach. I want to be a teacher because I want to help kids learn and make school a place they want to be. I'll miss my friends and all of the memories we've made while attending Sequim High School. I loved playing sports at SHS and was on the varsity team for soccer, basketball, and track. I'm going to miss it!
$500 SEA Future Educator Scholarship $1,000 Sequim Association of Realtors $1,500 William & Esther Littlejohn Foundation
I'm most excited to be challenged and have to figure out ways to work through those challenges. I like it when something pushes me out of my comfort zone. It has helped me to adopt the mentality that if I want something, I have to go and get it.
IF YOU KNOW ME, YOU KNOW THAT I LOVE GOING ON ADVENTURES!
ZEN GRAHAM WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY MEDICINE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
I want to earn a degree in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. I'm already halfway there through Running Start at Peninsula College. It's a good subject to study for medical school and a good backup if I don't pursue medicine. I look forward to attending Western. Even though I will have my hands full with schooling, I hope to have a little time for extracurricular activities. I'm someone who comes from a family that has struggled. Although there have been challenges, they have driven me towards success, and I will stop at nothing to achieve my goals. I'll graduate with most of my chemistry and calculus series, which most won't get to see until their 2nd or 3rd year in college. I'm proud of myself for that!
$1,000 Shipley Center Scholarship $1,500 Sequim Schools Alumni Association $8,000 Albert Haller Foundation
I'm excited to start a new chapter in my life at a school where everyone wants to be there and is treated equally.
I AM VERY EXCITED TO BE ON MY OWN AND PROVE TO THE WORLD THAT I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
GABBY HAPPE EDMONDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
I'm attending Edmonds College because I got a scholarship to play soccer. I'll be playing on the women's soccer team, which makes me really excited! I'm also looking forward to meeting new people. I plan to study Business Management because it would fit my personality perfectly and use my skills to the best of their ability. I'd be happy with any job in the business field. Moving away from home and starting a new school makes me a little nervous. I'm especially nervous about the challenges of college and being in bigger classes. At the same time, I'm excited to meet new people and explore new job opportunities. I hope that I can pursue some volunteer opportunities as well.
$1,780 Edmonds Community College Soccer Award $1,000 Sequim Chamber Howard Wood Memorial $1,000 Sequim Junior Soccer
I'M GOING TO MISS A LOT ABOUT SEQUIM AND SHS, BUT I'M MAINLY GOING TO MISS ATTENDING SPORTING EVENTS AND HANGING OUT WITH ALL MY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS!
BRIANNA JACK UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO TEACHING MARKETING
I applied to the University of Idaho because of the “big school feel” that it provides while still having a small student population. I'm also interested in its greek life, football, and cheerleading programs. Plus, I adore the town of Moscow. I've been selected to be on the University of Idaho’s Cheer Team, which I'm really excited about! I’ll miss a lot about high school and Sequim in general but definitely cheering on the Wolves with my team is what I'll miss the most! I'll also miss my friends that are now all heading down separate paths. I’m excited to join the University of Idaho’s Greek Life system! It'll be interesting to experience new things, meet new people, and live away from home for the first time.
$500 SEA Future Educator Scholarship $750 SEF Engineering Challenge Award $60,336 University of Idaho Western Undergraduate Exchange
I’LL ALSO MISS THE BEAUTIFUL TOWN OF SEQUIM THAT WE'RE SO LUCKY TO LIVE IN, AND ALL OF MY TEACHERS WHO ALWAYS ENCOURAGED ME.
ABBEE JAGGER EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY CRIMINAL JUSTICE
I applied to Eastern Washington University because I love the location. It's different from Sequim, but I'm excited to explore a new place and meet new friends! Something you might not know about me is that I'm the only girl of four brothers, and I will be the first to attend college! I'm proud of myself for that. And I'm really looking forward to playing women's soccer at Eastern. There's so much to miss about high school, but what I'll miss the most are the AMAZING teachers, the AMAZING counselors, and all of the staff. And, of course, all of my friends, too! Everyone at SHS was so supportive, and I couldn't have made it through school without them!

My favorite memories are, of course, the football games! There is nothing better than hanging out with friends and watching the games.

EDEN JOHNSON BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY, IDAHO DENTAL HYGIENE
I applied to Brigham Young University in Idaho mostly because I liked the smaller class sizes. I also really like that the school offers so many activities for students throughout the year! I'm excited to get involved in different academic and extracurricular programs. This year, I'll finish completing my prerequisite classes before starting the program to become a dental hygienist. I'm looking forward to starting a new career! What will I miss most about high school? Soccer, definitely soccer. Being a part of the Lady Wolves soccer team and all the success we had will always be an incredible memory for me. Coach VanderVelde is a great coach on the field and a great mentor off the field.

JOSHUA KING WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY COMPUTER SCIENCE
I applied to Western Washington University because it seems to have a good Computer Science program, which I want to study. The school also has a good reputation, and everyone I talked to seemed to have good things to say about it. I'm mostly excited to experience a new environment next year, meet new people, and see what happens. I want to study Computer Science because I enjoy programming. Programming can be frustrating because it's like solving a puzzle. But, to me, that's what makes it all the better when it finally works! I'm proud and excited that I got accepted into the honors program at WWU. I'm looking forward to the challenge. I also hope to continue doing something with music.

VICTORIA LELLE PIERCE COLLEGE VETERINARY MEDICINE
I applied to Pierce College to follow my dreams and become a veterinarian. I will do all my prerequisites next year and then apply to their Vet Tech program. I'm excited to start my career and further my schooling. I hope to study Veterinary Medicine, but focus on the care of large animals. I have raised animals all my life—mainly farm animals—and have gained a lot of knowledge and passion for caring for them. I love the outdoors and animals. I have always dreamed about a career centered on animals, which is why I gravitated towards Veterinary Medicine. I've owned many animals in my life, big and small, and always felt a special connection with every one of them. I'm most excited about living in a new area and meeting new people. But I'm also nervous about going to school all by myself, and staying on top of stuff.

ALISSA LOFSTROM UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII MANOA MARINE BIOLOGY
I applied to the University of Hawaii at Manoa because it has excellent programs for the field I wish to study: Marine Biology. I want to go into this field because the oceans are so crucial to all life on Earth. Right now, they are suffering from destruction by only one species, humans. I hope to work in a career where I can help restore our oceans and the entire plant. I also liked the idea of studying in Hawaii because I enjoy being outside. And, the beautiful, year-round weather is a plus! I will miss Sequim and high school a lot, especially my friends and the fun times we had attending sports games and clubs.

I've decided to take a gap year to save up money and attend Central Washington University in the fall of 2021. I've already received acceptance into CWU, and I'm truly excited to start my music career after my gap year. I've always loved music, and to me, it's something that brings people together. I started playing the alto saxophone right before 6th grade, and haven't been able to put it down since. To at least minor in music performance would help me expand my knowledge of music further. I absolutely love music and animals. For a while, I wanted to go to school to become a vet, but I would honestly enjoy music more.
$500 Denise Graham Memorial Scholarship
THE MUSIC PROGRAM AT SHS WAS SO IMPORTANT TO ME. MR. FOSKET MADE A BIG IMPACT ON MY VIEW OF MUSIC AND WHAT I CAN DO WITH IT.
SAMUEL MAY Valedictorian COLUMBIA BASIN COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY
I applied to Columbia Basin College because it offers a Radiology Technology program and has a great location. I hope to study this subject because I enjoy learning about human anatomy, using technical machinery, helping people, and being a constructive member of society. I'll miss working with my teammates in Knowledge Bowl and having in-depth discussions with Misha Ostrovsky and others in English. Being in the Running Start program at PC made it difficult to maintain relationships with my high school friends. But, at the same time, I believe that going to a local college as a high school student prepared me well for taking on new responsibility. It has helped me to develop flexibility in life, and has eased my nerves.

I'm excited to attend Western Washington University in the fall, and pursue my studies in Teaching. My dream is to, one day, become a high school history teacher. I really enjoy the subject of history, and teaching is a way that I can make a difference in the lives of others. I'm interested in teaching because of my own experiences with teachers at SHS. They are some of my favorite people and taught me just how impactful that career can be. I have a lot of great memories of Sequim, which I'm going to miss a lot. I especially will miss my time playing soccer. In particular, I have very fond memories of the Dungeness Cup, Sequim's annual soccer tournament. I loved competing and then hanging with my teammates after it was all over.

MIKHAIL OSTROVSKY REED COLLEGE AEROSPACE SCIENCE/RESEARCH
I decided to go to Reed for many reasons. In particular, I like its unique liberal arts curriculum and teaching methodology that emphasizes learning rather than grades. However, this does not mean it will be easy! I felt that Reed would be more challenging than my other choices. I plan to study Biology and Chemistry, but I also want to take advantage of Reed's open curriculum to dabble in subjects such as Business and Computer Science. I want to challenge myself as much as possible and become a better person, no matter what occupation I choose. It may sound weird for an introvert, but I'm excited to experience new things and new people. I don't dislike anything that I have experienced so far, but I've been in the same environment for 18 years.

I decided to attend Peninsula College because it's affordable and I believe my experience there will provide a good starting point for the rest of my life. I hope to become an emergency medical technician (EMT) and eventually transition to a career as a first responder. My life has revolved around hard work and servitude for my community. I've always enjoyed volunteering at different events in Sequim and PA, and I really benefitted from my experience as a page in the WA State Senate. These experiences showed me the power of helping others, so I hope to dedicate my career to that. Some of my hobbies include woodworking and rowing. I hope that although I'll be busy with school, I can still enjoy some free time to pursue my other interests.
$700 Clallam County Fire Dist 3 Local #2933
I have a lot of memories that I'll miss from SHS and Sequim. I'll definitely miss the gripping political conversations I've had!
$2,000 Sequim Sunrise Rotary Vocational Scholarship
I'M MOSTLY LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING FOR MYSELF. I LIKE BEING INDEPENDENT AND RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN ACTIONS.
MEGUIRE VANDERVELDE WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY JOURNALISM
I'm excited to attend Western Washington University because it has an excellent journalism program, and the environment on campus and in Bellingham is fantastic. I'll study Journalism because I love to write and travel, and I want to use writing to help other people around me. I look forward to writing their stories and finding ways to help them. I'm excited to join the club swim team at WWU and to find other ways to be involved on campus. I'm really going to miss all of my amazing friends and teachers, and I will especially miss both my parents who work at the high school. I'm most excited to meet new people and start a new chapter of my life. At the same time, I'm a bit nervous about leaving all my friends.

I'M A BIG "PEOPLE PERSON," AND I ALWAYS STRIVE TO HELP EVERYONE AROUND ME, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN NEED.
CAMRYN WALLEN PENINSULA COLLEGE NURSING
I decided to attend Peninsula College because it has an excellent nursing program, and I'm excited to take my classes there to get my college experience. I've always had an interest in nursing because my brother was born prematurely. The experience he and my parents had is what inspired me to become a NICU nurse. Once I finish my courses at PC, I hope to transfer to a specific NICU training course at a four-year college. I'm just really excited to go to college and get specific training to start my career! But, I'll also miss being a senior and seeing my friends every day. I'm a very mentally strong person, and I have a passion for sports. I've played softball for seven years and loved it!
$1,000 Sequim VFW Tony Juliano Memorial Scholarship
I'M EXCITED TO TAKE THE FIRST STEPS INTO MY CAREER, BUT I'M ACTUALLY REALLY NERVOUS ABOUT FAILING AND NOT GETTING WHERE I WANT TO BE.
LILLIAN WENDORF PENINSULA COLLEGE NURSING CHEMISTRY
I'm attending Peninsula College in the fall, and I'm excited to explore different career paths. Although medicine interests me, especially nursing, I'm also considering studies in Chemistry and Interior Design. IÂ love science and medicine, but I'm also a very creative person. If I can combine science and creativity into a career, it would be the perfect path for me. I'm already an expert at overcoming challenges, as I battled cancer as a kid. That experience taught me two things: hard work pays off, and perseverance is the key to getting through the difficulties in life. Phyllis, my blue 1985 Volvo Wagon, is my pride and joy, and I love her!

AS I TRANSITION TO THE PERSON I AM TODAY, I REALIZE THAT OVERCOMING PAST OBSTACLES HAS PROVEN TO ME THAT I AM CAPABLE OF ANYTHING.
KEITH WILWERT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
I applied to Iowa State University because it has a great engineering program. It feels very welcoming and focuses on student success. ISU has one of the largest career fairs in the country and has a very high job placement rate. I have family in Iowa, including my sister, who currently attends ISU. I want to study Mechanical Engineering, but I might end up changing to Chemical or Aerospace Engineering. These subjects interest me because I'm a good problem-solver and I love working with machines. Although ISU invited me to join their honors program, I decided to spend my free time in the marching and concert bands and intramural soccer.

I'll miss playing and directing in the pep band, going on band trips, and playing soccer. I'll also miss the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. Living in a state like Iowa will be different, since, it doesn't have as many recreational opportunities.
I AM MOST EXCITED ABOUT MEETING NEW PEOPLE AND UNLOCKING OPPORTUNITIES IN MUSIC AND ENGINEERING.
BENJAMIN WRIGHT UNDECIDED THEATRE MUSIC
Since I was young, music has meant a lot to me. It was a constant source of comfort and an emotional outlet. I joined choir during my junior year of high school, but wish I had joined sooner! I really enjoy music, theatre, acting, and singing, which is what I hope to pursue while attending Washington State University in the fall. For my passion project in English class, I decided to write a song. It was interesting to put my voice on paper, share it with a small group of people, and get real feedback. I'm also interested in potentially pursuing a career in songwriting, or having it be an aspect of my life in the future. In the wise words of Bon Jovi, "It's my life. It's now or never. I ain't gonna live forever." I see a career in music for my future, and no one is going to stop me from reaching my goals.
$1,000 Shipley Center Scholarship I HAVE BIG ASPIRATIONS, BUT AN EVEN BIGGER WILLINGNESS TO DO WHAT I WANT IN MY LIFE. IT'S MY LIFE, MY FUTURE, AND ALL I CAN DO IS TO TRY MY BEST.
ZOË YATES BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC MUSIC PRODUCTION
I applied to Berklee because they have a fantastic music program specific to what I want to study. I'm very excited to focus on courses that apply directly to what I want to do in the future. I plan on studying Music Production and hope to gain the ability to create the type of music I visualize in my head, as well as work with others who have the same passion for music that I do. Something the world should know about me is that last year, my friend and I released a song called "Decayed."
$500 Dewey Ehling Memorial
As I open the door to my future, I'm both excited and nervous about achieving my goals. There are so many possible careers in the music industry, and I'm not entirely sure what exactly I want to do. I just hope to be happy and spend time producing my own music with a band of some sort.
Scholarship THOUGH I'M VERY READY FOR WHAT THE FUTURE BRINGS, I'LL DEFINITELY MISS FRIENDS AND FAMILY, AS WELL AS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST'S BEAUTIFUL TRAILS AND RIVERS.

THANK YOU TO OUR SCHOLARSHIP DONORS AND OUR GENEROUS COMMUNITY!
This year, the SHS Class of 2020 received over two million dollars in financial support from their educational institutions, national and statewide scholarship programs, and local support. Of that amount, over $325,000 comes from our local community! We want to express our gratitude—on behalf of Sequim School District, our students, and their families—for the outstanding generosity this community has shown to our young people. Your support has been consistent throughout their school years and, now, in the form of scholarship awards. The seniors couldn't be more honored to have you by their sides as they take the next step toward their futures. Thank you for moving mountains and helping to clear a path for our graduating class. Local scholarship support is always vital to our graduating class, but this year, amid a global pandemic, it couldn't be more critical. Our scholarship donors came through for our seniors when they needed them the most, even with the digital changes in procedure and celebration. Thank you, Sequim and Clallam County! On the next page, please join the SHS faculty, staff, and senior class in thanking our local scholarship donors!
