Interior Architecture + Design
Eric Vogel Chair of 3D design Senior thesis faculty
6
In MIAD’s Interior Architecture + Design (IA+D) major, we believe that spaces and their furnishings can affect people in deep, meaningful ways and that those who create them are truly building whole environments that contribute to our collective psyche. Our students develop their ability to solve spatial problems with solutions that embody both aesthetic and practical concerns. They study building and construction techniques, design light fixtures, cabinetry, and furniture; create dynamic interior environments and work through space planning exercises with real world clients. They learn the fundamentals of site and landscape, as well as the details of material, color, and finish. At MIAD, as in the real world, innovation and creativity are equal partners with functionality and fabrication.
Senior Thesis FALL
SPRING
Senior Thesis is a design-intensive year long course of study with an emphasis on research, personal inquiry and creative expression. The fall course permits each student to choose a specific topic or building type based on their personal area of interest. The objective is to research, define and elaborate on a specific problem or concept within that area of interest by developing a series of diagrams, plans, sections, elevations and three dimensional models which ultimately manifest a clear design solution or ‘parti’. This process is by nature rigorous and demanding with significant episodes of self-discovery. At the final presentation of their schematic designs, the students participate in a “roaming review” with local design professionals, faculty, and other guests who are invited to engage each of the seniors in a challenging but constructive professional-level dialogue.
Thesis Presentation in the spring semester focuses on design development and the installation of a professional-quality presentation including exhibit design, architectural models, large scale computer renderings and interior design documents. Students are specifically asked to present an understanding of structure, building materials, fenestration, lighting design, acoustics, furniture, interior finishes and related fixture designs. The senior thesis exhibit, including verbal explanation and graphic presentation, is evaluated during college-wide discussions on “MIAD Define” day and at the spring Gallery Night show, both of which are intended to serve as the artistic culmination of the graduating senior’s three year Interior Architecture + Design curriculum.

Intersection: Knapp Street + Water Street The intersection of North Water Street and East Knapp Street is one of the busiest in Milwaukee connecting I-43 to downtown. However, the retail development on these corners has not kept pace with the increased commuter and pedestrian traffic, except in the evening when the intersection is the terminus of the Water Street bar district. This area is surrounded by businesses and residents that have great potential N

as customers. MSOE is just east, to the north near Laacke & Joys are several new condominiums and retail centers; west is Manpower as well as the boutique hotel Aloft, and south is as mentioned before, the bar district, which still has many tenants living above these historic buildings. The site is uniquely shaped as an extended triangle, which helped determine the shape and arrangement of the proposed building. I had
originally wanted to build a coffee shop, but when consulting precedent sites, I discovered that my site was almost three times larger than any other coffee shop. Therefore, I have decided to split my site into three units that come together to form one building appropriate to the size of the site. The theme of three parts has begun to develop throughout the shop; first and foremost with the flow of traffic. The coffee shop is divided into four parts dependent on the customer type.

1. Main Entrance
Accelerate For all of the busy corporate workers that need to grab a cup of coffee before they head off to work in the mornin the first flow of traffic Current is Accelerate. This area was designed to have a relatively straight circulation path to avoid confusion between the sit down customers and the in and out. 2. Alternate Entrance/ Service Corridor
There is a main entry access point at the intersection of Water St. and Knapp St. for the pedestrian or street parker, as well as access to the parking area on the west side of the site, which is a side street with ample angle parking. The Accelerate level does have bench seating with laptop charging stations, as well as public use computers and a printer near the main entrance

3. Second Level Casual Business
Deliberate With the site location of Current, the anticipation is that there will be corporate clientele. The intention of the area termed Deliberate was to have an area that accommodates business and casual meetings. 4. Ramp Ascending to Second Level
4.
This area was intentionally raised above Accelerate so that the customer can make the conscious decision to enter this area of the cafe. By raising Deliberate to another level, it begins the ascension towards the other areas of Current. The main seating of Deliberate are tables accommodating two individuals, with a couple tables that will seat four. The idea with this area is to promote conversation. With the high ceilings in this area, the noise levels will not affect the other parts of Current.

5. Indoor + Outdoor Lounge Space
Moderate slow down
The term moderate means to , or become calm, which is the intention of this indoor/outdoor lounge space. This area is for the customer that likes to get a cup of co ee, enjoy it and read a newspaper. Moderate can also function as an area for students in need of a quiet area to study. 6. Patio Lounge Space
Separate yet connected to the fully indoor coffee space, moderate takes you another step closer to the end of the journey through Current. Although it remains at the same level as Deliberate, the separation of thresholds comes from the act of walking through a partition. Couches, end tables, and ottomans adorn this area, to

Rejuvenate The nal area of Current brings the customer back to the outdoors, but with the hopes that one can nd a greater appreciation in life. The area created has both the urban feel of Water Street combined with a natural garden scape to refresh the mind and spirit.
7. Onlooking View from Lounge Egress
The rejuvenate area has ample seating for customers to use for whatever they please. There are bench seats along the garden area facing the east to watch the sun, as well as tables to accommodate two to four people. While Rejuvenate and Meditate are closely related, it is the act of descending to ground level again that causes the feeling of renewal.

The Post Apocalyptic Safehouse
is a post-apocalyptic video game that takes place in the 2277 in what is left of Washington, D.C. The Character (The Lone Wanderer) is a young inhabitant of a fallout shelter by the name Vault 101. After 200 years of being sealed, the vault is finally opened and the Lone Wanderer ventures out into the wastelands of Washington, D.C.
100
Problem As he starts to explore, the Lone Wanderer quickly discovers just how dangerous the wastelands are. He needs a place that will protect him from enemies and radiation, a place to call home. Solution The Lone Wanderer needs a shelter that is hidden and secure. In cases of absolute emergency, he needs to ha a panic room. In
order to meet these standards, I have
chosen a site within the game that has geographical features to facilitate these needs: • Elevated location with long defensive views • Embedded within a ridge line •Surrounded by boulders
